War in Ukraine today: latest news, August 4, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 527th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian forces conducted 39 airstrikes, using 2 Shahed-136/131 attack drones, all of which were destroyed, and fired 43 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements. Unfortunately, russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries, as well as damage to residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. 

There is still a high threat of missile and air strikes across Ukraine.

There were 30 combat engagements during the day.

The situation towards Volyn and Polissia remained unchanged. 

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy conducted airstrikes in the areas of Volfine and Kostiantynivka in Sumy oblast. More than 25 settlements were shelled, including Khrinivka, Bleshnia and Yanzhulivka in Chernihiv oblast; Kozache, Boiaro-Lezhachi, Kindrativka in Sumy oblast and Hatyshche, Vovchansk, Bochkove in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, more than 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Zakhidne, Kindrashivka, Petropavlivka, Kucherivka and Kupiansk in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Lyman, the enemy fired at Nevske and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Torske, Verkhnekamianske and Spirne in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, Ukrainian defense forces are pinning down the enemy in the areas of Klishchiivka and Kurdiumivka. More than 10 settlements suffered from enemy artillery shelling, including Vasiukivka, Bohdanivka, Hryhorivka, Markove and Ivanivske in Donetsk oblast. 

Towards Avdiivka, under heavy fire from enemy aircraft and artillery, Ukraine’s defenders successfully repelled attacks near Avdiivka. More than 15 settlements came under artillery fire, namely Keramik, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Pervomaiske, Karlivka, and Halytsynivka in Donetsk oblast.

 

Towards Marinka, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the russian offensive in the areas of Marinka and Krasnohorivka. The enemy conducted air strikes near Krasnohorivka. They shelled more than 10 settlements, namely Krasnohorivka, Hostre, Marinka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Paraskoviivka, and Katerynivka in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy made unsuccessful attempts to regain the lost position in the area of Blahodatne. There were air strikes in the area of Staromaiorske. Blahodatne, Vuhledar, Bohoyavlenka, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, and Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire, as well as Staromaiorske, Levadne, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives near Novopokrovka. There were airstrikes in the area of Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv and Novodanylivka, Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy is focusing its main efforts on preventing further advancement of Ukrainian troops. More than 15 settlements came under artillery fire, including Malynivka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, and Yehorivka, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the enemy launched an airstrike near Odradokamianka. More than 20 settlements came under enemy artillery fire, including Kachkarivka, Respublikanets, Zmiivka, Beryslav, Molodizhne and Kherson in Kherson oblast and Ochakiv, Mykolaiv oblast.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct offensive operations towards Melitopol and Berdiansk, consolidating their positions and conducting counter-battery operations.

The russian military continues to hide its losses, using mobile crematoria. In particular, it has been established that one of these crematoria is currently operating 24/7 in the northeastern part of the occupied city of Melitopol, Zaporizhzhia oblast, with the bodies of the occupiers’ dead being transported by flatbed trucks. In addition, local residents complain about the constant stench of corpses in the city, especially at night.

Aviation of the defense forces conducted 7 strikes on buildups of enemy personnel, weapons and military equipment. 

Rocket and artillery units destroyed 9 artillery units at firing positions and 2 buildups of enemy personnel, weapons and military equipment.

The Ministry of Reintegration reports that the bodies of 44 fallen soldiers were returned. They will be handed over to their families after identification. 

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy informs that after the start of the full-scale invasion, russia launched 1961 Shahed missiles into Ukraine. A significant number of drones were shot down.


Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy  attacked settlements of Bohodukhiv, Kharkiv, Chuhuiv, Izium and Kupiansk regions with artillery, mortars, tanks, guided bomb and rocket launchers on a massive scale.

In Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region, private buildings and outbuildings were damaged by shelling. In Budarky village, Chuhuiv region, a fire broke out in a private building as a result of tank shelling.

The enemy struck Cherneshchyna village, Izium region, with a guided aerial bomb, damaging a private building.

The shelling of Kozacha Lopan village, Kharkiv region, damaged 3 private buildings and outbuildings.

In Petropavlivka, Kupiansk region, a large-scale fire broke out in a building as a result of shelling, damaging a garage and 2 outbuildings.

During the day, pyrotechnics of the State Emergency defused 55 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, on 3 August russians killed 2 civilians in Kurakhivka and Krasnohorivka.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar, Prechystivka and Bohoiavlenka were under attack. There were no casualties. 

Towards Donetsk, in Kurakhivka 1 person was killed, 2 injured, 3 buildings destroyed and 7 more damaged. Avdiivka was under artillery attack in the evening and in missile attack in the morning, damaging industrial facilities.

Towards Horlivka, in Toretsk community, 16 buildings in Pivnichne and 3 in Niu-York were damaged. In Chasiv Yar community, 2 buildings were damaged.

Towards Lysychansk, 4 buildings in Zvanivka and 2 buildings, a shop and a school in Pereizne were damaged. In Yampil, Lyman community, 1 building was destroyed and 1 damaged. In Siversk, 2 buildings were damaged.

During 2 and 3 August, 7 people were evacuated from Avdiivka. Vitalii Barabash, Head of the City Military Administration, reported during the United News TV marathon that this is a record in the last two months. 80% of the city is with no mobile connection due to the damaged tower which cannot be repaired. 

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, because of the constant shelling danger, it is dangerous to stay on the streets of Nevske and surrounding villages both day and night. Residents practically do not leave their homes, but they still have no intentions upon evacuating. Bilohorivka was also under russian shelling. At the same time, the enemy’s attempts to improve ground offensives are unsuccessful. 

Luhansk RMA reported that residents of the occupied territories complain about numerous refusals of bank institutions of russian federation regarding the issue of loans on the security of housing. The invaders have no interest when the settlement was occupied, in 2014 or in 2022, or whether it is safe there today – they refuse everyone. 

Also, preparations are ongoing for the so-called “first elections”, scheduled for September. Recently, employees of industrial enterprises and educational institutions were notified that they are obliged to fill out an application for joining the ruling party. Employees of passport services, issuing russian documents, also participate in agitation.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv RMA reported that 13 multi-apartment buildings are being rebuilt in the oblast as part of the UNITED24 project. Works are being carried out in Irpin, Hostomel, Borodyanka, Myla and Buzova. A total of 18 objects damaged as a result of russian aggression are planned to be restored.

The National Police of Ukraine reported that charges against a russian soldier who shot a civilian in Irpin and abused civilians in Kyiv oblast during the occupation of the region last year have been sent to court.

Kyiv RMA reported that support for wounded defenders and their families will be introduced in the oblast. The main idea of the project is to unite all initiatives and interested parties to provide comprehensive support to those who need it.

Oleksandr Markushyn, Mayor of Irpin, announced that an additional tank for purified water will be built in Irpin to avoid its shortage. The project is implemented due to the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine.

Two social facilities were opened in a new modular office in Borodyanka – the Family center and the Center for social services. They will provide psychological assistance and social support to families who survived the occupation or had to flee their homes from the war.

Azov fighter Petro Skrypka walked from Kyiv to Lviv in 21 days. After being in the hospital, he decided to help his brothers in this way. Having covered 540 kilometers, the man collected UAH 720 K to treat the Ukrainian military.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to UNESCO, four cultural heritage sites have been damaged in Zhytomyr oblast due to the russian federation’s full-scale war against Ukraine. The strikes of the russian military damaged part of the Drevlyanskyi cultural and recreational park in Korosten region, caused irreparable damage to the Center for Scientific Research of the Chronological Development and History of Korosten and Ukraine, completely destroyed the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin in Narodytskyi community, damaged the mansion of the notary Philippov and the public library named after Oleh Olzhych in Zhytomyr.

11 communities of Zhytomyr oblast are working out a strategic development plan under a project launched with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The main goal of the project is to provide support to communities in strategic planning, including advisory assistance, exchange of experience and dissemination of optimized practices. Meetings have been held to coordinate schedules and strategic planning steps in communities.

Ukrposhta in Zhytomyr branch reported that a new stamp with F-16 fighter jets was issued. The Evil Destroyers stamp was put into circulation to  emphasize the urgent need for this type of aircraft and visualize ‘battle falcons’.

Vitaliy Bunechko, Head of Zhytomyr RMA, announced that the cardiology department of the Herbachevsky Regional Hospital received a mobile surgical system and an X-ray operating table from the Netherlands. The cost of the transferred equipment is over UAH 1 mln.

Sumy oblast

On August 3, 165 explosions rang out and 27 enemy shelling attacks took place in Sumy oblast. The enemy shelled 18 settlements in 9 territorial communities: Krasnopillia, Khotyn, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Druzhbivka, Esman, Nova Sloboda and Velyka Pysarivka. Strikes were made from mortars, artillery, machine guns, grenade launchers, and from a tank.

Sumy RMA reported that the enemy carried out 2 shelling attacks in Khotyn community. 11 explosions were recorded. They were fired from mortars and artillery.

Head of Sumy RMA, Volodymyr Artyukh reported that evacuation from the five-kilometer zone in Sumy oblast is taking place as planned, and the preparatory stage for the evacuation of residents of border communities is currently being completed. In particular, explanatory work and citizen surveys were carried out. There are settlements in Konotop and Okhtyrka regions abandoned almost completely.

The meeting with the relatives of those missing in Sumy oblast was held by Oleh Kotenko, Commissioner for Issues of Persons Disappeared Under Special Circumstances. As reported by the RMA, they discussed complex cases related to legal and social support, interaction with relevant departments and local authorities. 

Chernihiv oblast

Over the past day, Novhorod-Siverskyi and Semenivka communities of Chernihiv oblast were shelled. As reported by the SBGS, the enemy shelled the border area from its territory three times with AGS and barrel artillery. There were 35 explosions.

Lieutenant General Serhii Naev, Commander of the Armed Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that four soldiers were awarded for discovering an enemy sabotage and reconnaissance group on the state border with russia. They came into fire contact and forced the invaders to retreat. According to him, the density of Ukrainian troops, the increase in the number of observation posts and reinforcement of the border line are being carried out around the clock in the areas where the enemy’s SRGs are likely to penetrate.

On August 3, Chernihiv Regional Court read the indictment against 15 russian military personnel, who were identified during the investigation of the basement case in Yahidne. According to the prosecutor, the next stage will be to study the materials of the criminal proceedings, physical evidence in the case and interrogate 368 victims.

Chernihiv RMA reported that the Danish company ROCKWOOL delivered 750 square meters of insulation for two dormitories of the Chernihiv Polytechnic. This is the second such delivery. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the regional council, russian troops shelled Nikopol region five times in the evening and during the night. They fired from heavy artillery and MLRS. They hit the city of Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka, and Myrove communities. Two residents of Nikopol, an 85-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man, were injured. More than two dozen private houses, a car, and two trucks were damaged in the town. Several solar panels, greenhouses, three gas pipelines, and two power lines were also damaged. Ten outbuildings were damaged, and two more were destroyed. In the afternoon, russians shelled the regional centre with artillery. 

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Vinnytsia City Council reported that Serhii Mohunov, Vinnytsia Mayor,  Markus Löwe, Mayor of Munster, and and a delegation from Germany, paid tribute to the victims of the missile attack on 14 July 2022 in Vinnytsia. 

The season of harvesting vegetables for the winter has begun in 50 schools and preschools in Kalynivka community. Most of the institutions are harvesting more than in previous years to provide supplies to the defenders at the front.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, a theatre from Kherson  performed a play about the occupation. The play Can(not) Stay… is a documentary about life under occupation and leaving for the territory controlled by Ukraine. The plot is based on five real-life stories of the Kherson Theatre staff.

Cherkasy oblast

According to Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy State Administration, the Cherkaskyi Vymir platform for veterans and their families was launched to provide algorithms for searching for missing persons, obtaining the status of a war veteran, medical care and rehabilitation. 

According to the regional  forum of veterans, currently, more than 20 K residents of Cherkasy oblast serve in the Ukrainian army. This was announced at a .

On 4 August, a fire tanker with a capacity of 30 tonnes of water was handed over to Cherkasy rescuers by the MHP Hromadi charity fund. This will help improve the water supply system during large-scale emergencies.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The Ukrainian forces continue their offensive operation towards Melitopol and Berdiansk. The enemy is putting up fierce resistance, and in addition to continuous shelling, they have fortified key dominant heights with protected concrete engineering fortifications. Paratroopers are conducting restraining operations. In such challenging conditions, Ukrainian troops are gradually but persistently moving forward. 

On August 4, russian forces shelled Orikhiv. The shelling caused a fire in a private residential neighbourhood, which was extinguished by 10 rescuer workers and 2 units of equipment.

On August 4, the russian military conducted 75 strikes on 20 settlements. 67 artillery shelling incidents were recorded in Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Huliaipilske, Novodariivka, Chervone, Charivne, Olhivske, Malynivka, Bilohiria, Preobrazhenka, Levadne, Kamianske, Mali Shcherbaky, Stepove, Piatykhatky. Four missile strikes from MLRS were recorded in Novodariivka, Levadne, and Kamianske, as well as two aviation strikes in Mala Tokmacha and drone attacks in Malynivka and Novoandriivka. A 53-year-old man was injured as a result of enemy artillery shelling. There were 23 reports of homes and infrastructure being destroyed.

The General Staff reports that in the temporarily occupied Enerhodar the occupiers are forcing ZNPP personnel to obtain russian passports, threatening them with repression. The russian occupying forces regularly conduct searches of local residents both on the streets and in their homes, checking passports and phones. If a citizen’s passport is found to be Ukrainian, they destroy the document and force them to obtain a russian passport. Occupiers also compel the change of other documents, such as driver’s licenses and property-related papers.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv RMA, on August 3, at 10:28, 10:54, 11:32, 11:54, 12:28, and 17:06, the enemy conducted artillery strikes on the waters near Ochakiv community. Additionally, at 14:30 and 19:55 on the same day, the outskirts of the settlement and coastal area in Kutsurub community were shelled. As a result of these attacks, residential buildings were damaged. There were no casualties reported.

Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, announces that the government has approved financial aid for the residents of Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts whose crops were affected due to the explosion at the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant. After the dam explosion, many areas were flooded, and people lost their crops. Therefore, residents of the two regions will receive payments of UAH 3300 for each 100 square meters of private garden land that suffered crop losses. The maximum amount of assistance provided is up to UAH 100 K.

The book “Mykolaiv. 24.02.2022” by the local writer and volunteer, Hanna Polovenko, was preseented in Central Library named after M.L. Kropyvnytskyi in Mykolaiv. This is a diary-style book, a chronicle based on real events that occurred in Mykolaiv during the first months of the war. The author mentioned that the initial entries, which later became part of the book, were made at the beginning of the russian full-scale invasion. She completed her book in May 2023.

Odesa oblast

Serhii Bratchuk, Spokesman for the head of Odesa Regional Military Administration, informs that as a result of attacks on Ukrainian ports, 26 port infrastructure facilities and 5 foreign vessels were damaged or destroyed. 

Kiliia community in Odesa oblast purchased 4 powerful searchlights to detect air targets at night. Entrepreneurs joined the fundraiser. They can illuminate the sky up to 1.5 kilometers in the dark and detect enemy air targets on approach. The light can “guide” a target across the sky until it is shot down.

The press service of Odesa Regional State Administration reports that on the eve of the Air Force Day, a postage stamp featuring the image of F-16 combat aircraft was canceled in Odesa. This issue of the stamp was dedicated to the heroes who bravely defend the sky over our country. The stamp depicts the hands of a Ukrainian soldier rubbing the kremlin on a grater with holes in the shape of fighter jets. The cost of the stamp is UAH 39, of which UAH 16 will be spent on drones for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. A stamp sheet, an envelope and a postcard cost UAH 172.  The circulation of the stamp is 600 copies. They can be purchased at any Ukrposhta post office.

Kherson oblast

At around 10 am, the russian army dropped two guided aerial bombs on Odradokamianka, damaging at least 5 residential buildings. A 50-year-old man was injured.

During the night, the occupiers once again shelled the Kherson Hospital, where they killed a young doctor and wounded a nurse on Tuesday. This time, the projectiles hit the hospital’s inner courtyard, damaging the morgue building. Windows and doors were shattered in the reception area. At the time of the attack, the hospital staff and patients were in shelters, and there were no casualties reported.

On August 3, the enemy carried out 53 attacks, firing 241 shells from mortars, artillery, Grads, tanks, drones, and aircraft. Beryslav, Kakhovka, and Kherson regions remain under constant shelling. Odradokamianka and Kozatske were hit by enemy airstrikes again. In the city of Kherson, 42 shells were fired, hitting the cathedral and causing significant damage to the ceiling and facade, with the roof catching fire. A trolleybus was also hit, with three passengers injured. When the emergency services arrived to deal with the aftermath of the previous shelling, the terrorist forces opened fire on them, resulting in injuries to 4 rescuers and damage to their vehicles. Nine people were injured due to the attacks, including a volunteer from Norway, who was hospitalized at a local hospital.

The funeral of doctor Dmytro Bilyi, killed by the russian shelling on August 1st, took place in Kherson. According to the general director of the Karabelesha Hospital, 25-year-old Dmytro started working on August 1st after completing his internship. 

Water treatment stations have been put into operation in Shyrokа Balka, Stanislav community and in Tomyna Balka, Bilozerka community. The stations will improve the water quality in the water supply networks. This became possible thanks to the support of volunteers and sponsors from the United States of America.

The 9th border unit received a Nissan pickup. The vehicle was donated by the Charitable Fund of Yevhen Nedoshovenko.

Volyn oblast

Zakarpattia oblast

Uzhhorod City Council held a meeting with UNICEF and discussed cooperation within the Development of Potential of Youth in Western oblasts project.

The RMA reported that 25 children of military personnel from Zakarpattia and art school students went on vacation to the Hungarian town of Feneshlitke.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The 21st rehabilitation center, designed for 20 inpatient beds, opened in Prykarpattia. Wounded defenders, and neurological patients with musculoskeletal injuries will be treated here. Next up is another large-scale project – a physical and mental rehabilitation center in Ivano-Frankivsk, which is designed for 200 beds.

Lviv oblast

10 children  with special social needs from Mykolaiv community went on a health vacation to Truskavets. These are 2 orphans, 4 children of combatants, 1 child whose father was killed in the russian-Ukrainian war, 2 children from large families and 1 child with a disability. The vacation was funded by the regional budget.

Roman Khrushch, an artist defending Ukraine, held a master class for patients of the UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center, where he himself is currently being treated and recovering after a serious injury. At the front, Roman was about to lose his hand.

Rivne oblast

A single department for veterans will be established in Rivne oblast. This is to simplify all kinds of assistance in the field of social protection. Veterans, their families, and those of fallen (deceased) defenders of Ukraine may apply for consultation there.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that 3 combat drones and military first-aid kits were sent to Ternopil special police units located in combat positions in the East of Ukraine.

Young residents of Ternopil oblast  met with the Pope and spoke about the war. The Pope was also given water from Zarvanytsk spring.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi Chamber of Commerce and Industry held a meeting with representatives of business, authorities and public institutions. The topic of the meeting: “Implementation of Budget Replenishment Reserves During Martial Law, Combating Shadow Segment of the Economy, Tax Innovations.”

The RMA presented state awards to relatives of the deceased rescuers of the State Emergency Service of Khmelnytskyi oblast. The 3th degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was awarded to Vladyslav Dvorak, ensign of the civil protection service, and Serhii Sevruk, junior sergeant of the civil protection service.

Chernivtsi oblast

18 medical institutions of the oblast received 3 pallets of vegetables from the Blau-Gelbes Kreuz eV and CBG CF.

As part of the Side by Side project, Chernivtsi oblast takes care of the village of Zarichne. At the first stage, it is planned to rebuild 35 residential buildings. Building materials have already been sent. Builders also went to Kherson oblast. The Hands of Mercy CF prepared food, hygiene products, and other necessary things for them.

The RMA reports that comprehensive social and psychological support will be provided free of charge at the “Together” facility for children in Chernivtsi and Strozynets. Twice a week, specialists conduct training and art therapy classes for children and adults.

 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The US introduced new sanctions against scientific institutions and citizens of russia. The prokhorov Institute of General Physics of the russian Academy of Sciences, the kazan Scientific Center of the russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Solid State Physics of the russian Academy of Sciences were added to the list of sanctions. In addition, two persons, two cargo ships and one yacht were added to the list of restrictions.

The EU Council introduced new restrictive measures against belarus in connection with russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and in response to minsk’s involvement in the aggression. In particular, this will ensure the impossibility of circumventing russian sanctions through belarus.

Arindam Bagchi, Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that India will take part in the peace talks regarding Ukraine, which will be hosted by Saudi Arabia on August 5 and 6. Great Britain, South Africa, Poland and the EU have already confirmed their participation in the meeting.

Lithuania will close two checkpoints on the border with belarus. According to Arnoldas Abramavicius, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, other measures will be taken, but announced later. This decision was taken because of redeployment of mercenaries of the wagner company and provocations on the border with Poland.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church reported that the Pope met with over 500 Ukrainians. The pontiff apologized to Ukrainian youth for his inability to influence the situation in Ukraine. The Pope was given symbolic gifts from Ukrainians, in particular, fragments of rockets that fell on the courtyard of the church in Beryslav, Kherson oblast.
