It has been the eighty-eighth day of heroic confrontation of the Ukrainian people with the russian military invasion.
The front now stretches from Kharkiv oblast to Kherson.
The largest number of russian strikes, both artillery and missile, are in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The russians are trying to advance on Severodonetsk in Luhansk oblast and Slovyansk in Donetsk oblast.
Russian missiles continue flying throughout Ukraine.
Ukraine briefly:
The enemy does not stop conducting offensive actions in the Eastern operational zone.
In Volyn and Polissia directions, some units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus hold tasks to cover the section of the Ukrainian-Belarusian border, the enemy deploys additional electronic reconnaissance means in the border areas of Gomel oblast. There is a threat of missile and air strikes on Ukrainian objects from Belarus.
In Siversk direction, the enemy enhances control over the section of the Ukrainian-Russian border in Bryansk and Kursk oblasts, continues shelling settlements and civilian infrastructure in Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts, namely Boiaro-Lezhachi, Ulytsia, Buniakine, Hirky, Hremiach and Muravii.
In Sloboda direction, the enemy carries out systematic artillery shelling of the positions of our troops. Russia, using units of the 6th Combined Army of the Western Military District and the Baltic Fleet, is fighting to maintain the seized borders in Kharkiv direction and prevent our troops from reaching the state border.
In Kharkiv direction, the enemy did not conduct any active warfare during the day.
In Slaviansk direction, the occupiers focused on creating conditions for resuming the offensive. The invaders carried out artillery shelling in the areas of Virnopillia, Dibrivne and Dovhenke.
In Donetsk direction, the enemy is trying to break through the defense of our troops and reach the administrative borders of Luhansk oblast. The enemy carried out air strikes on civilian infrastructure in the areas of Vrubivka and Bakhmut.
In Lyman direction, the enemy shelled the settlements of Lyman, Zakitne, Ozerne and Dibrova. They continued firing on the positions of the Defense Forces units.
In Severodonetsk direction, the enemy conducted hostilities in the area of Prudivka. Units of the occupiers also tried to conduct an offensive to capture the settlement of Oleksandrivka; they were unsuccessful.
In Bakhmut direction, supported by artillery, the invaders tried to improve the tactical position of their units in the areas of Trypillia, Lypove and Vasylivka. Fighting continues.
In Avdiivka, Kurakhiv, Novopavlovsk and Zaporizhzhia directions, the intensity of combat operations has decreased. The enemy regroups to strengthen some directions.
In the South Bug direction, the enemy did not conduct any active hostilities.
In the Bessarabiia direction, on the territory of the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, the situation remains tense.
Russians mine bridges and roads, that residents of Kherson oblast use, to leave the occupied territories
As a result of hostilities during the defense of Kyiv, some areas were mined by both the Ukrainian military and the enemy. In Kyiv, the most intensively mined and shelled areas are Pushcha-Vodytsia, Vinogradar, Sviatoshinsky forestry and highways in the direction of Zhytomyr and Vyshgorod.
The occupiers in Mariupol organized a “volunteer rally” with red flags and excursion inside the Drama Theater, bombed by russians and where hundreds of Ukrainians died.
Thanks to the report of russian propagandists, Ukrainian artillery detected the location and destroyed the self-propelled mortar of the russian Federation “Tulpan” in Luhansk oblast. It was the mortar that blew up the bridge between Severodonetsk and Lysychansk.
Russian troops launched a missile attack on Malyn, Zhytomyr oblast.
The Verkhovna Rada voted to extend the term of martial law and drafting into military service in Ukraine for 90 days – until August 23.
In Fastiv district of Kyiv oblast, air defense shot down a Russian missile.
Russian troops launched a missile attack on Dnipropetrovsk oblast and hit the Samara River.
Lviv paratroopers shot down a russian Su-25 attack aircraft in one of the areas of execution of tasks, the air defense unit of the 80th separate airborne assault brigade of the DSHV of the Armed Forces of Ukraine successfully shot down a russian Su-25 “Grach” attack aircraft.
Russian troops once again shelled the border areas of Chernihiv oblast.
Russian invaders shelled 12 settlements in Donetsk oblast, resulting in the dead and wounded, 58 civilian facilities were destroyed.
Russian invaders changed the access system in Mariupol and Mariupol district: to enter Mariupol you need to get a pass for cars and passengers. The validity of the pass is three days, but it is a one-time one.
In Mariupol, russian occupiers plan to completely russify school training in the occupied city from the new school year, introducing their standards. They also arranged an “organizational and methodological” meeting of teachers who are forced to cooperate in the educational process.

Eastern regions
Kharkiv oblast
On the afternoon of May 22, the russian occupiers fired on Kyiv district of Kharkiv, including Pivnichna Saltivka and Velyka Danylivka.
To increase efficiency of transfer of troops and cargo, the occupiers are restoring the railway infrastructure in the area of Kupiansk.
In Kharkiv oblast, the occupiers dismantled the only medical vehicle of one of the outpatient clinics for spare parts. “There are no family doctors, outpatient clinics are not working […] There is a shortage of medicines,” as said in the Borova community.
Donetsk oblast
In Donetsk direction, the enemy is trying to break through the defenses of our troops and reach the administrative borders of Luhansk oblast. In Bakhmut direction, the occupiers tried to improve the tactical position of their units – they fought in the settlements of Toshkivka, Komyshuvakha, Trypillia and Vasylivka.
In Mariupol, the occupiers organized an excursion of the destroyed Drama Theater ruins, as well as held a “volunteer rally” with red flags in the bombed city, mayor’s councillor Petro Andryushchenko said.
During the day, the occupiers deported 245 people to russia, according to the mayor councillor of Mariupol Petro Andriushchenko. 175 people, including 17 children, were taken out of the filtration camp in the village of Bezimenne, and another 70 people (12 children) were deported from the village of Nikolske. In addition, 313 people, including 55 children, were taken out of Mariupol to Bezymenny for “filtration”.
British intelligence suggests that russia has deployed its only operational company of “Terminator” war machines to Severodonetsk area. This may indicate that the Central Group of the Forces, previously suffered losses near Kyiv, was involved in the offensive in Donbas. The intelligence service is convinced that this technique will not be able to significantly affect the fighting in Donbas.
Luhansk oblast
In Severodonetsk direction, the enemy fought in the area of Prudivka. The occupying forces also tried to launch an offensive to capture the village of Oleksandrivka, but were unsuccessful.
The shelling intensified in all settlements of Luhansk oblast. The toll of casualties is unknown, because under constant fire it is not possible to examine the area of residential buildings and infrastructure shelling.
Bloggers from Luhansk oblast fight on the information front. The “Severodonetsk Vostok” telegram channel broadcast a video about the enemy troops movement in Novopskov and appealed to its subscribers to send information to the anonymous chatbot @ R13message_bot.
Also, according to information from Luhansk Regional State Administration, the curfew in Luhansk oblast will change from May 23 – now it will be from 9pm to 5am.
SES personnel are in Luhansk oblast and continue to perform their assigned tasks. Every day, during the relative reduction of shelling, rescuers go out to extinguish fires caused by numerous attacks. They are also trying to help those in the cities where the fighting is underway: they are delivering humanitarian aid, drinking and technical water.
Northern regions
Kyiv oblast
Today in Kyiv oblast over Fastiv district, the air defense shot down a russian missile. This was reported by Kyiv Regional Administration. According to preliminary information, there are no casualties or damage.
Two more civilians killed by the occupiers were found in the village of Buzova, Bucha district. To date, Kyiv oblast police have identified and examined 1290 bodies of citizens who died by the occupiers. The toll of identified victims in Kyiv oblast has approached 1300.
In Kyiv oblast, locals can hear explosions. Sappers of the National Guard continue scheduled demining of the area.
So far, they have identified and destroyed about 10K explosive devices.
Some days, sappers find several hundred dangerous munitions left behind by the russian occupiers. Among them are shells banned by the Geneva Convention.
During the past 24hrs, explosive devices were inspected and defused in the settlements of Bucha, Brovary, Vyshhorod and Fastiv districts.
35153 hectares of territory were surveyed. 6 km of highways, 0.5 km of power lines were inspected, 211 units of GNP were neutralized.
A total of 34,866 units have been neutralized since the beginning of the works. GNP.
Work is underway to educate the public about the risks associated with explosive devices in 7 settlements of Brovary district.
The State Emergency Service of Kyiv oblast reminds that following unexplored field or forest roads can cost lives. Yesterday there was a report of an explosion in a field in the village of Lypivka, Makariv village community, while conducting field work, a tractor ran into an explosive device. A team of rescuers from the State Emergency Service released the victim and handed him over to the emergency medical service.
Kyiv Military Administration has published a list of dangerous parks and squares to visit. Currently, work is underway to remove some green areas of the capital from explosives, so Kyiv residents are asked not to approach the fortifications and their remains.
The most mined areas are the outskirts of the city, where there were clashes – in the areas of Pushcha-Voditsa, Vynohradar, Sviatoshynsky forestry, highways in the direction of Zhytomyr and Vyshgorod.
All detected mines, shells, ammunition or missile elements found by divers-sappers of the Mobile Rescue Center of the SES of Ukraine in the waters of the region are being destroyed on a specially designated site.
Electricity and gas supplies have been restored in all settlements of Kyiv oblast affected by the fighting, said Oleksii Kuleba, head of Kyiv Regional State Administration. Repair crews worked around the clock to restore communications.
The Kyiv-Kovel-Yahodyn highway connection has been restored. Today, a temporary crossing was opened for the safe passage of transport near the village of Ukrainka in Zhytomyr oblast. The route is 496.7 km long and goes from the capital to the Yahodyn checkpoint on the border with Poland.
A modular town is being built in Borodyanka, Kyiv oblast, for those who lost their homes as a result of military operations, said Mykola Liashenko, head of Bucha District Military Administration.
These modular buildings were handed over by the Polish government. There are bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms and children’s rooms. Currently, houses are being installed and communications are being brought to 4 modules, each of which contains 22 rooms.
Today, Kyiv is helping different regions of Ukraine as much as it can. At the request of the State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management, humanitarian assistance is provided to the staff of enterprises and institutions of the Exclusion Zone.
The T-72B3 tank, the BMD-4 tower, the REB machine and part of the Tiger SUV, which our soldiers turned into exhibits of the National Military History Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv, are on display at the Mykhailivsky sites in Kyiv.
Zhytomyr oblast
Today, the russian invaders again launched a missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Malyn, Zhytomyr oblast. The strike killed at least one person, head of the RMA Bunenko said.
According to the Air Command Center, the air defense eliminated four missiles fired by Russia in Zhytomyr oblast. The attack was from a southeastern direction with sea-based cruise missiles.
The SBU detained a russian agent who wanted to be called up to the combat unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the purpose of reconnaissance and subversive activities in favour of the occupiers, as reported by the SBU office in Zhytomyr oblast.
ZERNO Zhytomyr band raised money for a “banderomobile” for the Armed Forces of Ukraine at a charity concert.
Chernihiv oblast
The enemy continues to shell settlements and infrastructure in Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts.
According to the operation command ‘North’, today at daytime, 6 attacks, most likely from grenade machine guns, were recorded in the area of Senkivka settlement. There are no losses among personnel and equipment.
There are restrictions on relocation and stay in Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts. Andriy Demchenko stressed that sabotage groups’ activities are not recorded on the border with belarus. The likelihood of air strike attacks from the territory of belarus is still high.
Based on the data provided by the State Emergency Services, demining of the oblast territory is underway. Pyrotechnicians and saper diver teams were involved 25 times in demining the explosives and detected and removed 304 items. In total, 24068 items were removed since the war broke out.
2 cases of fire were recorded: 1 – in the residential area; 1 – in the trade facility.
Due to water rising in Dnipro and Desna, the hazardous flooding marking and transportation disruption are observed in a number of settlements of Novgorod-Siversky, Koropsk, Sosnytskyi, Mykhailo-Kotsyubynskyi, Mensk and Ripkynsk.
Based on the Chernihiv Regional State Administration, the power lines are being restored Bobrovytsia. The damaged infrastructure is being restored. The road services are repairing high-priority highways.
Earthworks are also underway at one of the locations of the M-01 Kyiv-Chernihiv highway. There are roadsides. A layer of gravel-sand mixture is laid. On the same route the other day the dismantling of the rubble of the blown up bridge over the river Desna began.
The Ivanivka community, which is currently cut off from Chernihiv, now has its own fire truck.
Sumy oblast
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces, the russians fired in the areas of the settlements of Boyaro-Lezhachi, Ulytsia, Bunyakine, and Hirky in the Sumy region.
“In Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts, russia continues provocative actions, artillery shelling of civilian infrastructure. The sabotage group activities was also noticed, which, under cover of artillery fire, are trying to enter the territory of Ukraine. The other day in the Sumy oblast, Ukrainian border guards forced the enemy to withdraw, ” said Andriy Demchenko, a spokesman for the State Border Guard Service.
In Sumy oblast, here are the work results for the evening of May 21:
New trains will start running on May 25 (train № 260/259 Sumy – Chernihiv – Ivano-Frankivsk, will run on odd numbers; train № 259/260 Ivano-Frankivsk – Sumy – Chernihiv, will run on even numbers);
Restoration of the Shevchenkove – Velykyi Sambir – Deptivka road has begun. The site needs to be repaired in the Konotop district after being damaged by russian enemy vehicles;

Central regions
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
In Pavlograd, a russian missile hit the Samara River, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Valentin Reznichenko said. No one was killed or injured.
During the day, shelling of three settlements in the Kryvyi Rih district was recorded. The occupiers hit Maryanka with the Grad multi launch rocket system. Ten shells flew into the village. The head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional council Mykola Lukashuk stated that there were 2 more strikes on the territory of the Apolistic community, and the infrastructure facilities were not affected.
Other districts of Dnipropetrovsk oblast were not attacked today. There are no russian occupation troops in the region.
A charity concert of “Druha Rika” band took place at the Dnipro metro station. The musicians raised money for two ambulances for a separate territorial defense brigade. The event was organized by the staff of the Dnipro music festival “BezViz”.
On May 21, a special branch of Ukrposhta was opened at the Dnipro railway station, where state financial aid is provided to migrants arriving by evacuation trains.
Poltava oblast
“Many farms have already finished sowing, especially in the southern regions. So Poltava region keeps its food front,” – said Dmytro Lunin, Head of the Regional Military Administration.
The region continues to operate as a powerful humanitarian hub by actively accepting migrants.
As of May 23, six more municipal buses on seven routes will resume operation in the regional center.
At the Poltava Training and Rehabilitation Center, almost 70 children work with specialists: speech therapists, speech pathologists and psychologists. It is extremely important for children with special educational needs to continue their education and rehabilitation during the war.
Vinnytsia oblast
Trees were falling in Vinnytsia oblast due to the windstorm. The Regional State Emergency Services claim that Rescuers went to Khmelnytskyi and Vinnytsia districts to remove them from the roadway.
10 trucks with 160 tons of food supplies were sent from Vinnytsia to Kharkiv.
Southern regions
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Today, at about 3 am, there were dead and injured as russian troops launched a missile strike on the civilian infrastructure of one of the villages in the Vilna region of the Zaporizhizhia oblast.
The Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration said that guerrillas operating in the occupied territories had destroyed several artillery systems of the russian army.
The American analytical center “Institute for the Study of War” observes high concentration of russian troops south of Hulyaipole, which may indicate the occupiers’ plans to resume the offensive in this direction. Banners were hung in occupied Melitopol on the occasion of the anniversary of the Tavriya province. The invaders might plan to implement pseudo-republics in Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts the same way as the DPR and LPR.
In Energodar, guerrillas blew up the self-proclaimed “mayor” Andriy Shevchyk and his bodyguards. The collaborator survived, but he is in critical condition in hospital.
Kherson oblast
The Operational Command “South” reports that the situation in the Kherson oblast remains stable. Local residents report mining of bridges and roads by which residents of the region are trying to enter the territory controlled by Ukraine.
In the Belozersky community after cluster attacks on May 21, 2022, the occupiers killed 3 people and partially destroyed 10 private houses.
In Kherson, the propaganda channel “Crimea 24” and radio stations are broadcast. A number of propaganda journalists also arrived yesterday. Thus, the Russian Federation is trying to take control over the information space of the occupied territories.
Artist Olena Afanasieva created LIVE, a project that brought together more than 20 artists and photographers from across the country. The idea is to reach both ordinary Europeans and politicians. Participants collected photos and stories of volunteers, confectioners, teachers, journalists, artists and IT professionals.
Mykolaiv oblast
The operational command “South” reports that at night the enemy fired at residential and industrial districts in Mykolaiv. Previously, five people were injured.
The evacuation is underway. As of May 22, 388 internally displaced persons were registered at temporary accommodation establishments. In total, 21636 people were evacuated from Mykolaiv area.
Local authorities of the Ascension Territorial Community intend to rename the streets and alleys. There are 130 lanes and 130 streets in the local community, 20 percent of which will be renamed. Residents can offer their own versions of new names until July 20. A public hearing on renaming will take place on July 21.
Odesa oblast
The operational command “South” reported that there are six russian ships and two missile carriers in the Black Sea. Two submarines of the Varshavyanka project are in the berths of the Southern Bay of Sevastopol.
Former serviceman Mykola Matvienko conducts free training for children on how to behave during the war. He teaches them to fall properly, find safe places and respond to injuries.
Classes are held every Saturday at Odesa Polytechnic University.
Western regions
Lviv oblast
In one of the areas of combat missions, the air defense unit 80, a separate airborne assault brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, based in Lviv region, successfully shot down a russian Su-25 “Grach” attack aircraft.
The orchestra of the National Academy of Land Forces named after Hetman Petro Sagaidachny performed today on the occasion of the Heroes’ Day near the monument to Taras Shevchenko in Lviv.
Rivne oblast
In Rivne oblast, employers have begun to receive compensation for migrant workers. Among them are 69 legal entities that hired 108 IDPs and 35 individual entrepreneurs who hired 41 IDPs.
Ten more kindergartens will open in Rivne on Monday, May 23. Priority will be given to children whose two parents work in critical infrastructure. The city authorities stressed that the authorities do not recommend sending a child there unless there is a critical need.
The Zdolbuniv Local History Museum has launched a project “Survive and Win: Russo-Ukrainian War 2022”. Its purpose is to record the crimes of the russian occupiers in Ukraine. The organizers plan to create archival videos of oral testimonies for future generations. Fragments from main stories will be available on the museum’s YouTube channel.
Ternopil oblast
In Ternopil, the real estate market is intensifying. Now, you can sell square meters of living space. There are restrictions only on purchase and sale of land. Land registers are not yet included.
Today, in Ternopil “Gadyukin Brothers” and “Calypso” bands gave a charity concert. The organizers will present best donors with an armor plate from a russian tank, engraved with the band’s logo and a famous phrase about the ship.
Chernivtsi oblast
Since the full-scale war began, 77 soldiers from the Chernivtsi oblast have died.
In Bukovyna, sowing is coming to an end – corn, buckwheat, sunflower, sugar beet and potatoes are being sown. As a result of the war, farmers faced fuel shortages. One of the local farmers, Andriy Slyvka, owning 400 hectares of land, borrowed five million hryvnias and exchanged part of the crop for fuel to plant fields.
