It has been the 578th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy continues to ignore the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, and shells both military and civilian targets.

There were 24 combat clashes during the day. The enemy launched 1 missile and 44 air strikes, fired 52 times from multiple launch rocket systems at Ukrainian troops’ positions and localities. Unfortunately, russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains challenging.

The situation towards Volyn and Polissia remained unchanged. There were no signs of offensive groups forming. Certain units of the belarusian armed forces are performing tasks in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas and continues shelling settlements from the territory of the russian federation. The enemy conducted an air strike near the village of Stepne, Sumy oblast. More than 15 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Moshchanka and Karpovychi in Chernihiv oblast; Yablunivka, Riasne, Poznia in Sumy oblast and Odnorobivka, Baranivka, Vovchansk, Vilkhuvatka, Stroyivka in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy launched airstrikes near Cherneshchyna, Kharkiv regionoblast, and Novoiehorivka, Luhansk oblast. More than 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Ivanivka, Kyslivka, Berestove in Kharkiv oblast, were subjected to artillery and mortar attacks by the enemy.

Towards Lyman, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions in the  sector. The areas of Nevske in Luhansk oblast and Spirne in the Donetsk oblast were hit by airstrikes. Artillery and mortar shelling affected more than 10 settlements, including Nevske and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Novosadove, Spirne, and Rozdolivka in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, our defenders successfully repelled enemy attacks in the area east of Bohdanivka and southeast of Bila Hora in Donetsk oblast. The enemy tried to regain the lost position in the area of Klishchiyivka, Donetsk oblast, but was unsuccessful. Conducted airstrikes near Klishchiyivka, Andriivka, and Niu York in Donetsk oblast. More than 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiyivka, Andriivka, Druzhba and New York in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy tried to regain its lost ground near Avdiivka in Donetsk region, but was unsuccessful. He carried out an air strike near this settlement. Avdiivka and Karlivka in Donetsk oblast came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Marinka, our defenders successfully repelled 11 enemy attacks in the vicinity of Marinka, Donetsk oblast. The enemy conducted an airstrike near Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast. More than 10 settlements were under the fire of the occupiers, including Ostrye, Heorhiivka, Marinka, Pobieda, Pervomaiske, and Paraskoviivka in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy launched air strikes near the towns of Vuhledar, Zolota Nyva, Urozhayne, Staromayorske and Zelene Pole in Donetsk oblast. About 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Blahodatne, Urozhayne, and Rivne in Donetsk oblast, came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Melitopol, the Defense Forces continue their offensive. Our defenders successfully repelled the enemy’s attacks near Robotyno, Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy launched airstrikes near Verbove, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne and Novodanylivka in Zaporizhzhia oblast. More than 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Levadne, Huliaipole, Yehorivka, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Plavni in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the enemy conducted airstrikes near the towns of Beryslav, Odradokamianka, Burhunka and Olhivka in Kherson oblast. About 10 settlements in Kherson oblast came under hostile artillery and mortar fire, including Kozatske, Olhivka, Tokarivka, Dniprovske, Kizomys, and Stanislav in Kherson oblast.

Over the course of the day, Aviation of the Defense Forces carried out 8 strikes on buildups of enemy personnel, weapons and military equipment. 

Rocket troops destroyed 2 anti-aircraft missile systems, 4 artillery units and 1 ammunition depot.

The School of Political Analysis of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy reports that 2804 settlements remain occupied since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. 687 settlements have been de-occupied. 

France24 says that the second vessel passed through the temporary corridor to export Ukrainian grain. This was Aroyat bulk carrier with 17.6 thousand tons of Ukrainian wheat for Egypt.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

There was a combat clash near Bilohorivka towards Lyman and Kupiansk yesterday. Illia Yevlash, Head of the press service of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that the invaders used a Storm Zed unit to conduct an offensive but all their attempts were repelled.

The invaders used artillery 557 times in this area of the frontline and engaged aviation 17 times. In addition, 13 strikes were conducted by enemy kamikaze drones.

Our defenders eliminated 76 invaders. Also russian armoured personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery systems, cannons, personnel transport vehicles and a command and observation post were also destroyed.

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration. informed that t  he enemy shelled settlements of Kharkiv, Bohodukhiv, Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions with rocket and cannon artillery, mortars and other weapons yesterday.

In Kotivka village, Chuhuiv region, a 67-year-old woman was injured and hospitalised in a moderate condition. In Yurchenkove village, Chuhuiv region, about 10 private residential buildings were damaged, outbuildings destroyed and fires broke out as a result of hostile shelling from multiple rocket launchers. In Vovchansk city, Chuhuiv region, 2 private residential buildings were damaged by shelling and a fire started. As a result of shelling of the outskirts of Kupiansk, dry grass was burning in an open area.

During the day, pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 3.7 hectares of territory and defused 120 explosive objects.

Donetsk oblast

The press service of Donetsk police stated that the enemy attacked Avdiivka, Chasiv Yar cities, Kurdiumivka settlement, Verkhnokamianske, Yelyzavetivka, Kostiantynopolske, Markove and Predtechyne villages yesterday. Also russians attacked civilians with aviation, Uragan and Grad multiple rocket launchers, artillery and tanks.

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, russians launched an air strike, shelled Vuhledar 26 times and targeted Bohoiavlenka towards Volnovakha.

Towards Donetsk, 1 person was killed in Krasnohorivka and 1 injured in Yelyzavetivka of Marinka community. There were isolated attacks in Avdiivka at night and in the morning the town suffered artillery and Grad shelling, destroying 3 apartment blocks and damaging 1. The outskirts of Kurakhove community were shelled four times.

Towards Horlivka, 2 apartment buildings and 3 private buildings were damaged in Chasiv Yar community. The territory of Kostiantynivka community was shelled twice.

Towards Lysychansk, 1 person was injured in Verkhnokamianske of Zvanivka community. Two buildings were damaged in Torske of Lyman community.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the enemy attempted to attack Bilohorivka but all attacks were repelled by Ukrainian troops. The enemy does not stop air pressure. This time, Nadiia, Nevske and Bilohorivka were hit from the sky. In Nevske, a KAB-500 bomb destroyed a private building. Preliminary, there were no casualties. Bilohorivka, Nevske and Novoliubivka also suffered from russian shelling.

In Rubizhne, water utility workers protested to the occupation authorities, refusing to perform their duties because they had been working without being paid for a year. This issue did not move forward either during the pseudo-referendum in 2022 or now, after the so-called “first elections”.

Meanwhile, the russian State Duma is reviewing a law that would allow ordinary and former police officers to be judges in the so-called LPR and other occupied regions.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

In Bucha community, various scenarios are being worked out in case of emergency situations during the upcoming heating season. As reported by the city council, the process of providing the heating system with alternative power sources in case of russian attacks on energy facilities of Ukraine continues, stationary boiler houses are checked and prepared for repeated operation, diesel and gasoline generators are supplied with fuel.

The Ukrainian Women’s Guard (UWG) held classes on tactical medicine for women in the village of Borodianka. They learned how to provide medical aid in war conditions according to the MARCH protocol, stop bleeding, fix fractures, tamponate wounds. The participants completed a basic four-hour medical training course and received certificates.

A study on the impact of the full-scale war on air quality in Ukraine, conducted by the Save the Dnipro public organization, was presented in Kyiv. In particular, the study analyzed the impact of environmental crimes on the atmospheric air in Ukraine. The researchers used information about those crimes, about which there is public information. These are rocket, bomb, and artillery attacks on oil depots, industrial enterprises and infrastructure facilities.

The Department of Education and Science of the Kyiv oblast reported that for students from the  oblast, who left Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the russian federation, remote classes were organized for studying according to the Ukrainian program. They will ensure that children learn school subjects that are not available in programs abroad. At the same time, Ukrainian schools can count grades from foreign teachers in subjects that are common in the programs of educational institutions.

Kyiv RMA reported that since the beginning of the year, the communities Kyiv oblast have received 69 school buses, purchased with the funds of the state and local budgets. The other day, the last batch of seven buses was handed over to the communities of the oblast. Currently, 383 school buses transport students of Kyiv oblast to their studies.

Shooting of the feature film “Bucha” directed by Stanislav Tiunov has finished in Ukraine. The plot of the feature film is based on real events that took place in the cities of Bucha, Vorzel, Hostomel and Irpin during the russian occupation in February-April 2022. The filming of “Bucha” took place in Kyiv oblast in March and April 2022 and lasted 28 days. The premiere will take place in the fall of 2024.

Zhytomyr oblast

136 economic entities of the Zhytomyr oblast, which employed 210 internally displaced Ukrainians from the beginning of 2023, benefited from state financial support. They submitted the necessary documents to the employment service and received compensation for part of the salary paid to the migrants for the first two months of their work. The total amount of payments as of September 21 amounted to UAH 2.5 million.

In Zhytomyr, on September 23, a charity sports triathlon tournament Iron Country took place, during which participants and all volunteers donated medical equipment for Zhytomyr Military Hospital. According to the organizers, more than 80 professional athletes and amateurs from many cities of Ukraine, as well as athletes from the United States of America, Germany, Great Britain, Finland and other countries took part in the sports event.

Sumy oblast

On September 23, a local resident was injured as a result of artillery shelling of Yunakivka community. The man died of his injuries in the hospital. According to Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the man is a resident of the village of Yablunivka, born in 1972.

Sumy RMA reported that russians carried out 21 shelling attacks on the border territories and settlements of the oblast. 101 explosions were recorded, caused by enemy mortars, artillery, SPG and VOG, which the enemy dropped from UAVs. The communities of Krasnopillia, Khotyn, Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Mykolaiv, Velyka Pysarivka, Seredina-Buda, Esman, Shalyhine came under shelling.

The RMA reported that russians carried out 3 shelling attacks on the border, a total of 22 mortar hits were recorded. Seredyno-Buda and Druzhbivka communities were under enemy shelling.

The State Environmental Inspection reported that the russian missile attack on a residential quarter in Sumy on September 8 caused damage to the environment of more than UAH 57.5 million. As a result of the impact, two plots of land with an area of 4,200 and 6,500 m2 were littered with debris. Also, due to the fire that broke out in the residential building, pollutants got into the air.

The Northern Forestry Office reported that in September 2023, a total of 16.6 thousand hectares of the state forest fund were demined in Sumy oblast and Chernihiv oblast. Demining was carried out in the branches of Nizhyn Forestry, Konotop Forestry, Trostyanets Forestry and Chernihiv Forestry. Now it is possible to carry out forestry activities there without risk to life. About 20 more thousands of hectares of the territory of northern Ukraine, the demining of which is currently impossible, remain mined.

Chernihiv oblast

During the past day, the russians fired 13 times from their territory on the border of Chernihiv oblast. As reported in the SBGS, there were 178 mortar and artillery strikes. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk and Horodnyanka communities came under shelling.

The Ministry of Health of Ukraine reported that the restoration of the Chernihiv city hospital No. 3, which was damaged by the russians in the first months of the full-scale war, is underway. Thanks to the joint efforts of partners and local authorities, the hospital managed to completely replace the windows and carry out current repairs. Funds were also allocated for capital repairs of the partially destroyed building of the X-ray department.

A hybrid solar station with energy conservation systems was installed on the roof of Chernihiv School No. 3 from the charity organization Energy Act For Ukraine Foundation. This system will allow the school to operate autonomously in the event of a blackout for four hours

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipro Oblast Council, reported that an enemy munition detonated in Pershotravneve community, injuring a 12-year-old boy. He is in critical condition in hospital. The enemy continues to terrorise the civilian population of Nikopol region. They attacked the region 6 times with drones and artillery. A resident of Nikopol was injured in a drone attack. A 24-year-old man was hospitalised in critical condition. A shop and a children’s educational institution were damaged in the town. The Chervonohryhorivka community was shelled twice with artillery. More than fifteen shots were made. 4 residential buildings, 2 cars and 2 power lines were damaged. The Pokrovsk and Myrove communities were hit with artillery. More than a dozen more shots were launched from artillery.

Vinnytsia oblast

Olena Yeniutina, Director of House of Children and Youth Creativity, said that  nearly a hundred angel-shaped fabric charms for Ukrainian defenders were made by participants of a workshop in Tyvriv in the institution. The angels were made by 20 children aged 5 to 15.

Kirovohrad oblast

Olena Kostenko, Deputy Director of the Social Policy Department of the City Council, reported that Kropyvnytskyi is home for 25,770 IDPs. The city has 11 facilities for their temporary stay. Out of 859 places, 159 are currently vacant.

Poltava oblast

Vitalii Maletskyi, Head of Kremenchuk City Council, said that 55 people, including 6 children, were injured as a result of the shelling. 19 are still in hospital.

Cherkasy oblast

Anatolii Bondarenko, Mayor of Cherkasy, reported about the charity performance. The concert raised more than UAH 100K. All the funds raised will be used to support the 156th Battalion of Cherkasy 118th Territorial Defence Brigade.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff’s report, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue their offensive operation towards Melitopol. They are displacing the enemy from their positions and consolidating on the achieved front lines in the area of Verbove.

Yesterday, the enemy launched 72 attacks on 25 populated areas in Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were 6 MLRS strikes reported in Bilenke, Malynivka, Stepove, and Lukianivske, as well as 5 UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) attacks in Huliaipole, Levadne, and Novodarivka, along with 6 airstrikes on Orikhiv and Robotyne. 57 artillery strikes targeted areas in the immediate vicinity of the frontlines, including Zaliznychne, Olhivka, Zatyshshia, Luhivske, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Plavni, Kamianske, and Mali Shcherbaky. There are 5 reports of residential buildings and infrastructure objects being destroyed.

The Prosecutor’s Office in Zaporizhzhia oblast has initiated a pre-trial investigation into the deaths of two residents of the region as a result of russian shelling. According to the investigation, a 53-year-old resident of Mala Tokmachka was killed on September 23 due to russian artillery shelling, and an 82-year-old woman was killed during an airstrike in the city of Orikhiv on September 22, 2023.

A new mural dedicated to Mariupol has been unveiled in Zaporizhzhia. It was created by Mariupol residents and “I am Mariupol” center employees in collaboration with the “Generation of the Future” foundation. The mural adorns the walls of the building housing the center that provides assistance to Mariupol residents. It features iconic locations in the city, including the port, city garden, Drama Theater, water tower, and Freedom Square.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv RMA reports that on September 23, the russian army launched an artillery strike on the waters near Ochakiv community. There were no casualties reported. 

On the afternoon of September 23, the South Air Command destroyed two russian reconnaissance drones of the Orlan-10 type. Fires in dry grass and shrubs occurred in Bashtanka and Mykolaiv region as a result of the drones’ wreckage falling. The fires were promptly extinguished.

On Saturday, September 23, a charity fair called Together We Are Strong took place in the village of Buzke in Voznesensk region. The fair featured various snacks and entertainment. According to the press service of Buzke community, the funds raised from the fair will be used to purchase night vision sights for the soldiers of the 79th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade.

Odesa oblast

 The South Operational Command reported that on September 23 and during the night of September 24 russian military aircraft attacked Zmiinyi (Snake) Island three times. The enemy launched four guided aviation bombs at the island.

The first International Women’s Forum SHE took place in Izmail with the slogan “She is not a Barbie, she is a fighter.” More than a hundred women from various cities in Ukraine, as well as Slovakia, Poland, and Romania, attended the event. Public figures, volunteers, businesswomen, representatives of science, and the administrative apparatus shared their paths to their goals and their journey as women leaders. The forum was organized by the “Women’s Leadership Club ‘Power of Women'” NGO and activists and public figures from Izmail, Olha Kolesnichenko, and Kateryna Izmailova.

An exhibition by the renowned Odesa sculptor and artist Kyrylo Maksymenko titled “Manifesto of Peace” was opened in the “Apartment #6” gallery at the Bleschunov Museum in Odesa. His sculpture of a metal hand saying “Thank you, Steve” on Novoselskoho Street was featured in a BBC documentary about Steve Jobs.

Two ships entered the Pivdenny” port in Yuzhne city for the first time since the end of April, using temporary corridors established by the Ukrainian Naval Forces. These ships are the bulk carriers YING HAO 01 and AZARA. Another bulk carrier, ENEIDA, entered the port of Chornomorsk. These were the first large ships to enter the Pivdennyi port since April 29 when russia, being a part of the Joint Coordination Center in Istanbul, stopped including ships heading for this port.

The second batch of Ukrainian grain arrived in Turkey via the temporary corridor across the Black Sea on Sunday, September 24. This concerns the dry cargo vessel Aroyat under the flag of Palau, which is loaded with 17,600 tons of wheat and departed from the Port of Chornomorsk on Friday, September 22, heading to Egypt. This information was reported with reference to maritime monitoring websites by France24.

A resident of the town of Artsyz in Odesa oblast, Vasylyna Martynova, raised the flag of her hometown on Mount Ararat. The Ukrainian flag fluttered at an altitude of 5,165 meters. This was reported by the head of the Artsyz Unified Territorial Community, Serhii Parpulanskyi.

Kherson oblast

This morning, russia launched airstrikes on Beryslav. The explosion wave damaged the hospital and ambulance station, and private houses were destroyed. A woman was killed, and three people injured as a result of the enemy’s attack. Another airstrike was carried out on the village of Lvove. A 67-year-old man was killed.

Around 12:00, the enemy began shelling the city of Kherson with artillery. As of now, there is information about four injured residents, two of whom have been hospitalized. The details are being clarified. Private houses, apartments, and a daycare center were damaged.

Yesterday, the enemy conducted 83 shelling attacks, firing 332 shells from mortars, artillery, “Grads,” tanks, UAVs, and aviation. The enemy fired 28 shells at the city of Kherson. The russian military targeted residential areas of populated areas in the region; a banking institution in Beryslav region. One person was killed, and three others were injured.

 Viacheslav Musat, Director of the Kherson Phthisiopulmonological Medical Center, was awarded the Kochon prize during the 78th UN General Assembly in New York. An independent commission recognized him and other Ukrainian doctors for their resilience and courage in providing tuberculosis services during the war.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Department of Culture, Youth and Sports of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences reported that since June 1 of this year, about 10 patriotic events  have been held for children and youth in the oblast. About 500 participants were involved.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA held a meeting with the official delegation of the Ministry of Culture and Innovation of Hungary led by Minister Janos Cak. They discussed issues of bilateral cooperation

The 2nd meeting of the National Cluster on Information Sustainability took place in Zakarpattia. The event is devoted to strengthening countermeasures against disinformation in conditions of hybrid warfare.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Every week, Ivano-Frankivsk community pays aid for equipment to the community’s fighters. This week, 221 combatants will receive UAH 20K each for a total of UAH 4 mln 860K. Since the beginning of the program, this assistance has already been allocated to 2 243 fighters for a total amount of UAH 45,3 mln.

The RMA reported that For Combat Victory awards were presented to the relatives of the fallen Heroes from Burshtyn community.

Lviv oblast

Soldiers of Sambir Territorial Defense received an anti-drone gun worth UAH 260K thanks to the joint efforts of deputies of Sambir City Council, entrepreneurs of the community and people with an active civic position.

3 cars were handed over to the military on the front line thanks to Drohobych RMA and the KOLO CF.

The employees of Yavoriv Regional Department of Emergency Services received a fire truck and 2 trucks from the city of Ganau (Germany).

The training course Basic Life Support and Stop Bleeding for the staff of educational institutions in Strii region was launched by Lviv’s Regional Center of Emergency Medical Aid and Disaster Medicine in cooperation with Strii RMA. The courses are conducted by EMD Center instructors certified by the European Resuscitation Council.

The RMA reporetd that in the gymnasium of Myshlyatichi village of Shehiniv community, a memorial plaque was opened to the Hero graduate Volodymyr Osidach, who was killed in the russian-Ukrainian war.

In Radelichy, Strii region, a memorial plaque commemorating russian-Ukrainian war participant Taras Pikulyk was unveiled on the school’s facade. A soldier of the assault company was killed in Donetsk oblast on March 17.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast received 10 excavators worth over UAH 23 mln thanks to USAID HOVERLA.

The Strong of Ukraine competition for veterans was held in Rivne. A total of 130 men and women with injuries and active servicemen took part in the event. It is the first all-Ukrainian sports competition in adaptive sports among veterans and active military personnel who were injured and wounded while participating in hostilities in Ukraine.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council informed that the servicemen of one of the military units formed at the base of Ternopil receive 8 quadcopters worth UAH 2,32 mln; 25 portable radio stations worth UAH 765 475; 60 folding chairs worth UAH 93 480; 30 folding tables worth UAH 110 850; 20 tablets worth UAH 289 520; 10 terminals for satellite Internet UAH 240K; routers, adapters, scanners and printers in the amount of UAH 195 744.The total amount of over UAH 4 mln.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that provision of housing for all internally displaced persons remains an urgent need in Khmelnytskyi oblast. In cooperation with international funds, the oblast implements projects that help to restore or purchase such housing.

Chernivtsi oblast

A charity festival of honey and herbal tea was held in Chernivtsi  to raise funds for BanderaPower for the 44th separate artillery brigade named after Danilo Apostola. Vasyl Palamar, Head of the Bukovyna Beekeepers’ Association, serves in the ranks of this unit.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

At Shannon Airport, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, held an unscheduled meeting with Abdel Fattah al-Burgan, Chairman of the Sovereign Council of Sudan. They discussed common security challenges, namely activities of illegal armed groups financed by russia.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, during his visit to the USA, met with American businessmen and heads of largest funds of the United States. They discussed the prospects of business involvement in the reconstruction of Ukraine and the implementation of investment projects.

The Parliament of Canada adopted a resolution condemning deportation of children from Ukraine to the russian federation. The resolution also demands that russia “immediately stop this practice and safely return the children to Ukraine.

Returning to Ukraine from Canada, Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored Bianka Zalevska, TVN Discovery Poland journalist, and Damian Duda paramedic from Poland, with state awards.

The 2nd vessel with Ukrainian grain arrived in Turkey. A ship with 17,6K tonnes of Ukrainian grain has already passed the Bosphorus and is on its way to Egypt.

Andrzej Duda, President of Poland, reported that the country has prepared transit corridors for the export of Ukrainian grain.
