War in Ukraine today: latest news, 03 November, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 984th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The russian army does not stop trying to advance into the depths of Ukraine’s territory. To date, they attacked the positions of the Defence Forces 110 times. It was most active towards Kurakhove and Pokrovsk, where they conducted more than half of all attacks. 

The border areas of Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts continue to suffer from russian artillery shelling – the settlements of Khrinivka, Hrabovske, Volfine, Volodymyrivka, Zhuravka, Mkhy, Obody, Luhivka, Zaliznyi Mist, Pavlivka, Khotiyivka and Chuikivka were affected. Bratenytsia, Zhuravka, Novenke and Basivka came under enemy aircraft attacks.

The enemy also launched 17 attacks on its own territory, and 25 UAVs have already flown over Kursk region.

Towards Kharkiv, russian terrorists twice tried to conduct offensive actions near Vovchansk, but were rebuffed. 

The russian army attacked Ukrainian positions near Kupiansk eleven times. Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy assaults near Holubivka, Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kolisnykivka, Berestove, Zahryzove, Kruhliakivka, Vyshneve and Pershotravneve. 

Towards Lyman, enemy units continue to attack in the vicinity of Hrekivka, Terny and Dibrova. Ukrainian troops repelled seven out of nine enemy attacks in this area. The fighting continues. Terrorists carried out airstrikes in the vicinity of Serebrianka forest.

Towards Toretsk, there were four enemy attacks. The enemy attacked near Toretsk and Shcherbynivka. Ukrainian defenders are giving a worthy fight back, two attacks were stopped. The aggressor’s aircraft bombed the vicinity of Druzhba, Toretsk and Petrivka.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers launched 19 attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the vicinity of Myroliubivka, Lysivka, Promin, Sukhyi Yar, Novohrodivka and Vyshneve. The defence forces repelled the enemy’s attacks, holding back the enemy’s onslaught. The occupiers concentrated their main efforts near Promin and Vyshneve.

Towards  Kurakhove, the situation is the hottest, with 54 combat engagements registered, with the invaders most actively trying to advance in the vicinity of Vovchenka, Horoshne and Antonivka. Eight battles are still ongoing.

Towards Vremivka, the invaders attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops near Trudove and Maksymivka nine times, and two engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy launched airstrikes in the areas of Yurkivka, Novodanylivka and Mala Tokmachkaska, dropping eight guided aerial bombs. 

No significant changes were observed in other sectors.


President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that during the week, russia attacked the territory of Ukraine with 900 bombs and 500 Shaheds. In addition to drones and bombs, russia also launched 30 missiles.

Kyiv authorities and the Institute of International Relations report that on the night and morning of 3 November, the building of an institute of Kyiv National University, a dormitory of the Institute of International Relations of Kyiv National University, civilian facilities, and shops were damaged as a result of the fall of russian drones. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Viktor Kovalenko, head of the community, informs that about eight guided aerial bombs were dropped by russians on Zolochiv community. At 3:10pm, russians hit the field near the village of Udy with three anti-tank missiles; at 15:20 – the russian federation also struck with three air bombs near Muravske and the outskirts of Odnorobivka. As a result of the hits, a two-storey apartment building, sheds, a sewage pumping station and power grids were damaged. At 3:25pm, an anti-aircraft missile struck the outskirts of the village of Kovali, three private houses were damaged. At 15:28, a bomb hit near Stohnii. At 5:30pm, russian troops again struck Zolochiv community with three anti-tank missiles. The first hit occurred in an open area near Odnorobivka, the second – in the village of Stohnii. The third airstrike hit Zolochiv, as a result of which two private houses, commercial buildings and power grids were damaged.

Oleksandr Hololobov, Head of Malodanylivka community, said that at least two aerial bombs were dropped by the russians at 21:00 there. Information about the victims has not yet been received.

Mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, says that in Kharkiv, the hit happened in a forest lane. No people were injured, there was no destruction as a result of the impact.

At 05:30, russians attacked the village of Kupiansk Vuzlovy, Kupyan region, sShelling the settlement. Information about victims and destruction is being clarified.

At 01:13, Makarikha, Bohoduhivsky region was fired upon.  As a result of shelling, the farm building was damaged.

The day before, at 11:02 pm, russians attacked Chuhuiiv. As a result of shelling, the glazing of the auxiliary building of the educational institution was damaged.

At 3:15pm, russians attacked between the settlements of Baranivka and Snihy, Bohodukhiv region, hitting the field.

At 2:00pm, russians attacked Bilyi Kolodiaz, Chuhuiiv  region. As a result of the UAV hitting a car, two civilian men, 60 and 33 years old, were injured.

Towards Kharkiv, with the support of aviation, the enemy stormed 8 times in the vicinity of Vovchansk.

There were 13 attacks by the occupiers towards Kupiansk during the day. The defense forces repelled enemy assaults near Pischany, Zahryzove, Petropavlivka, Zelenyi Hai, Kruhliakivka, Kolisnykyvka, and Lozova.

77 people (among them 2 children) were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff said that the largest number of attacks occurred towards Kurakhove .

Towards Kurakhove, the Defense Forces repelled 51 attacks. The occupiers most actively tried to advance in the vicinity of the settlements of Illinka, Novoselidivka, Novodmytrivka, Hostre, Maksymilianivka, Antonivka, Kostiantynivka, Kreminna Balka, and Katerynivka.

Towards Lyman, the russian army tried 14 times to penetrate the defences of the Ukrainian military near Hrekivka, Terny, Yampolivka, Torske, and in Serebrianka forest. In addition, the russian military actively used aviation, used 30 unguided missiles and shot down six anti-aircraft missiles.

Vitalii Milovidov, press officer of the 15th operational brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, says that towards Pokrovsk, the russian army conducts massive assaults, tries to advance in groups of infantry, involving a large number of equipment near Selydove and Vyshneve. russian troops are conducting rotations at the front, reinforcing their units.

Danylo Borysenko, Head of intelligence of the anti-aircraft missile and artillery division of the Rubizh brigade, says that the russian army is not successful in the direction north of Bakhmut. The russian military used armored vehicles – tanks, MT-LB – all attacks were repelled. Theysuffered losses among its personnel and retreated to its previous positions.

Orest Drymalovskyi, representative of the 79th brigade, says that russian troops are constantly conducting mechanized assaults on the positions of the paratroopers of the 79th brigade towards Kurakhiv direction. On November 2, russian troops actively used armoured vehicles. The Ukrainian military destroyed three russian armoured vehicles with landing forces and more than 13 russian soldiers, and damaged one russian armoured vehicle. The russian army carries out such mechanized attacks practically every day.

Anastasia Medviedieva, Spokeswoman for Donetsk region prosecutor’s office, said that on November 3, russian troops shelled the city of Myrnohrad with artillery. As a result, a 71-year-old man was injured.

Operational situation in the region as of the morning of November 3:

Pokrovsky district. In Pokrovsk, 4 houses and a gas pipeline were damaged. A person was injured in Myrnohrad.

Kramatorsk district. In Ivanopil of Kostiantynivka community, 2 people were killed, 4 private houses, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Bakhmut district. In Chasiv Yar community, 2 high-rise buildings, 2 private houses and an industrial building were damaged.

In just one day, russians shelled settlements of Donetsk region three times. 552 people were evacuated from the front line, including 132 children.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk RMA, says that on 3 November, russians killed 2 residents of Donetsk oblast – in Ivanopil. 1 more person in the region was injured.

Luhansk oblast

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk RMA, reports that the occupiers are actively using aviation. Yesterday alone, they struck 30 unguided air missiles and shot down six anti-aircraft missiles. They tried to target the fortifications of the Ukrainian defenders and peaceful settlements, and hit Zhuravka and Makiivka on Balka. The drones attacked Makiivka. Fighting took place near Hrekivka and in Serebrianka forest. Ukrainian defenders are holding their ground.

Two kindergartens are trying to provide services in Rubizhne. These services can hardly be called educational, because boys and girls are only cared for there and only during two clearly defined hours. The city does not have a centralized heating system, so the conditions in these institutions are suitable. Adding to the problems is the lack of public transport, due to which the trip to the kindergarten takes about an hour on average.

Luhansk RMA reported that a month ago, in Aidar (formerly Novopskov), with the support of builders from Voronezh, an updated “multifunctional center for provision of public services” was opened. However, customers are accepted there on a first-come, first-served basis, because russians have not implemented electronic queque. In 2018, a modern European-level TsNAP with an electronic queue and new software for this area was opened in Novopskov. The institution worked until the occupation of the village.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Head of the Regional Military Administration, Ruslan Kravchenko, reported that Kyiv oblast had repelled another massive attack by enemy drones. The alert lasted almost 11 hours. In five districts, as a result of falling debris, windows and balconies in 4 residential high-rise buildings were smashed, 5 private houses and 3 cars were damaged. All victims will be provided with assistance in repairing the damaged buildings.

The State Emergency Service informed that in Kyiv oblast, rescuers had to extinguish fires caused by shelling 8 times. A car caught fire in the village of Sofiivska Borshchahivka, a two-storey residential building caught fire in the village of Zdorivka, Obukhiv region, a fire on the roof of an outbuilding in the village of Nyzhcha Dubechnia and a fire on forest litter in Vyshhorod, Obukhiv and Fastiv regions.

Kyiv CMA reported that as a result of a nighttime drone attack in Kyiv, the debris of drones fell in Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts. In Shevchenkivskyi district, the debris fell on the road and damaged a lighting pole and power lines, while the blast wave damaged windows and doors in five buildings.

The building of the Institute of Journalism in Lukianivka was damaged by the debris of a drone. Student dormitories were also damaged. Students and teachers cleaned the glass in the institute building, and they plan to introduce online learning on Monday.

Kyiv Regional Military Administration reports that the oblast is extinguishing the aftermath of the massive russian attack on Saturday. As of the evening of 2 November, the number of damaged objects has increased: in five districts of the oblast, 11 private houses, an apartment and the facade of 2 multi-storey buildings, 2 outbuildings, 2 shops, 2 cars and a combine harvester were damaged. In addition, power lines were damaged, leaving 1,860 consumers in one of the settlements without electricity. An 82-year-old victim of the drone debris is in a medical facility and is being provided with all the necessary assistance.

Health Minister Viktor Liashko announced that the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital, which was destroyed by the russian attack in the summer, has been prepared for the autumn and winter period. The building was mothballed for the winter to prevent further damage. The company with which the hospital signed a contract to carry out priority emergency repairs has already completed them.

Kyiv City State Administration reported that the warning system on the left bank of the capital has been upgraded. The new system can operate for about a week without power supply using its backup equipment. It will also operate in the event of a blackout of all telecommunications operators, as it will be controlled autonomously.

A feature drama film called Bucha was presented in Kyiv and will be released on 7 November. It is based on real events and tells the story of Kostiantyn Hudauskas, a volunteer from Kazakhstan who brought more than 200 people to the territory controlled by Ukraine during the occupation of Kyiv oblast in February-March 2022. This year, the film won second place in the audience award at Warsaw Film Festival.

Zhytomyr oblast

MP Oleksandr Bakumov, Head of the temporary special commission, informs that the Verkhovna Rada Special Commission on Fortifications and UAVs inspected fortifications and engineering barriers in Zhytomyr oblast. The construction of defensive structures in the region has not stopped since the full-scale invasion. Priority is given to long-term firing positions in potentially dangerous areas. The results are being summarised. 

In Zhytomyr, solar panels are being installed at the water utility’s facilities to reduce electricity costs. The city council said that a total of 12 solar power plants are planned to be installed, and three of them are already in operation. The reconstruction of the sewage pumping station, where all technological equipment was replaced, also resulted in energy savings.

In Zhytomyr, 21 internally displaced persons have started their own business with a government grant. There are currently several grant programmes in place for amounts ranging from UAH 50,000 to UAH 1 million.

Zhytomyr Volunteer Headquarters reports that on 2 November, an Alley of Gratitude was planted in Zhytomyr. Nearly two dozen internally displaced persons joined the initiative and planted 25 lilac bushes with their own hands.

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that on 3 November,  air defence units of the National Guard and volunteers shot down eight Shahed drones over Shostka community. Infrastructure in the community was damaged, and garages caught fire as a result of the attack. The fire spread to 13 adjacent garages, and civilian vehicles also burned. Preliminary reports indicate no injuries.

During night and morning, russians carried out 11 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Konotop, and Shostka communities.

During the day, on 2 November, russians carried out 32 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 64 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Hlukhiv, and Esman communities.

Yunakivka community: an GAB was fired from an enemy aircraft (7 explosions), an FPV-drone hit (1 explosion) and artillery shelling (2 explosions).

Bilopillia community: the enemy fired mortars (16 explosions), artillery (6 explosions), FPV-drone (1 explosion).

Khotin community: an airstrikes by GABs (4 explosions), FPV-drone strikes (8 explosions), mortar shelling (6 explosions) were recorded.

Esman community: the russians dropped 4 mines on the territory of the community.

Hlukhiv community: the russians hit by mortars (3 explosions).

Velyka Pysarivka community: mortar fire (6 explosions).

Chernihiv oblast

In a village in Chernihiv region, a russian drone strike on the evening of 2 November damaged an apartment building, a utility structure, and several cars. According to Chernihiv Regional Police, no injuries were reported. The apartment building suffered broken windows, as well as roof and facade damage.

In Chernihiv, the public organisation Eco City collected 25 kilograms of plastic caps in just three hours. Volunteers organised the collection and sorting of plastic on 2 November at the Peremoha centre.

 City councils of Snovsk, Nizhyn, and Bakhmach reported that on 3 November, Chernihiv oblast residents paid tribute to soldiers Viktor Lupan, Serhii Maidannik, and Maksym Krylov. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that at night, the occupiers shelled Nikopol twice with artillery. They launched half a dozen shells. A fire broke out and an enterprise was damaged. According to updated information, 8 people were injured in a missile attack on 2 November in Dnipro district.  An 8-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy sustained shrapnel injuries, and an 83-year-old woman was hospitalised in serious condition.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​In the week from 28 October to 2 November, 25 defenders from the Vinnytsia oblast were reported killed.

War veterans from Vinnytsia are preparing for the 2025 sitting volleyball season. The team already has 12 members. All of them were injured during the fighting.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, people came out in support of prisoners of war and missing soldiers. Participants of the rally formed a convoy of 30 cars and motorcycles near the city centre. More than fifty people gathered on Maidan Heroes Square. They were holding portraits of their relatives who had been taken prisoner by russia or were missing.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that at night, defenders destroyed 2 attack UAVs in Cherkasy oblast. 

Relatives of the military, concerned citizens and volunteers gathered on Soborna Square in Cherkasy. People brought flags and posters to remind them of the captured and missing soldiers.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 3 November, russian forces shelled the frontline village of Preobrazhenka in Polohy region, wounding two civilians.

On 2 November, the occupiers launched 266 attacks on 10 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces carried out four airstrikes on Lobkove, Piatykhatky, Novodarivka, and Mala Tokmachka. Additionally, 124 drones of various types targeted Lobkove, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Novodarivka, and Malynivka. Nine MLRS strikes hit Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Novodarivka, and Orikhiv, while 129 artillery attacks were directed at Lobkove, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, Novodarivka, and Preobrazhenka. There were six reports about damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.

According to the General Staff, the enemy conducted airstrikes at Yurkivka, Novodanylivka, and Mala Tokmachka towards Orikhiv, deploying eight guided aerial bombs.

The occupation authorities increased security checks of documents and vehicles in temporarily occupied Berdiansk. The National Resistance Center reports that the occupiers are intensifying inspections around the port, focusing on checking phones and verifying russian passports. The occupation administration also made a raid on the outskirts of temporarily occupied Berdiansk.

Mykolaiv oblast

On 3 November, air defense forces successfully shot down four Shahed 131/136 drones in Mykolaiv oblast.

On 2 November, the enemy attacked Kutsurub community three times using FPV drones. There were no casualties.

On 3 November, a weekly peaceful rally was held in Mykolaiv to support military prisoners of war and missing servicemen. 207 people participated, carrying signs and flags to remind about those still waiting to come home.

Odesa oblast

On 3 November, one russian vessel equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total salvo capacity of up to four missiles, was present in the Black Sea, while another enemy ship, with up to eight missiles, remained in the Mediterranean.

Five ships heading to the Black Sea and seven to the Azov Sea passed through the Kerch Strait in the interests of the russian federation.

A team of Odesa utility workers returned from the eastern part of the country, where they were helping construct fortifications. This was the second group of Odesa utility workers deployed for these efforts. Over the past two months, 50 volunteers from Odesa’s utility services were involved in fortification construction and military assistance in the east.

Kherson oblast

Around 11am, russian forces attacked Bilozerka, hitting an ambulance team. Both the driver and the paramedic, who were outside the vehicle at the time, suffered blast injuries, head trauma, and concussions. Additionally, the paramedic sustained a shrapnel wound to the leg. The attack also damaged the medical facility’s roof and windows, and the ambulance vehicle.

On 2 November, numerous locations, including Zelenivka, Inzhenerne, Antonivka, Sadove, Prydniprovske, Dniprovske, Bilozerka, Stanislav, Kizomys, Tomyna Balka, Mykilske, Novodmytrivka, Beryslav, Havrylivka, Tomaryne, Krupytsia, and the city of Kherson, suffered from shelling and airstrikes. These attacks targeted schools, the library, the church, the post office, and stores, damaging five apartment buildings and 14 private homes. Infrastructure like gas pipelines, garages, and personal vehicles also suffered damage. Due to the strikes, one person was killed and ten others, including three children, injured.

A 70-year-old Kherson resident was hospitalized after a nighttime attack on Kherson’s Central district, suffering blast injuries and a concussion.

According to the South Operational Command, there were seven russian assault attempts in the operational zone, three of which were repelled on Prydniprovskyi front. After incurring losses, the enemy retreated to their starting positions. Over the past day, russian losses included 60 personnel, 31 pieces of military and vehicle equipment, three observation posts, one bunker, and one firing position, as well as a drone launch site.

This morning in Dniprovske, a 50-year-old resident triggered an anti-personnel mine, resulting in a blast injury, concussion, and traumatic amputation of his leg.

The Yellow Ribbon activist group reports that russian occupiers intensified checks on residents in the left-bank areas of Kherson oblast, conducting unauthorized searches and phone checks, particularly targeting men. Raids were reported in the occupied towns of Skadovsk, Henichesk, Novotroitske, and Kalanchak.

Construction of a new shelter in one of Kherson’s hospitals is nearing completion, featuring modern patient rooms and a small gym. Local volunteers from the “Dobrobat” group were assisting with renovations.

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent 2 DJI Mavic 3T quadcopters, 5 DJI Mavic 3 Intelligent Flight Batteries and 2 Starlink satellite modems to the 141st Separate Infantry Brigade

Zakarpattia oblast

The Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 15 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old and 100 bags with hygiene sets. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,956 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help eV and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

IDPs living in Prykarpattia received over UAH 607m in compensation from the state. Currently, 113,221 IDPs or almost 82,000 families are registered in the oblast. Among them: 31,405 children; 17,068 pensioners and 4,207 people with disabilities.

Oleh Bevskyi, Head of Ivano-Frankivsk City Emergency and Rescue Service, came from the front for a short vacation. Senior soldier Oleh Bevskyi was awarded with the II  degree For Honor And Valor award.

Lviv oblast

Dozens of Lithuanians, Poles and Americans came to Lviv oblast to personally deliver 50 SUVs for the defenders. Everything was organised by Valdas Bartkavicius, Lithuanian entrepreneur, volunteer and big fan of Ukrainian culture and language.

Vasyl Onats, who currently serves as a combat medic of the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of the Galician Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, was awarded the For Life Saved badge of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During his participation in military operations, he saved over one life. This is the 2nd honorary award for Vasyl Onats. In June 2022, the President of Ukraine awarded the soldier with the III degree For Courage Order.

Rivne oblast

Over 60 appeals to foreign oblasts, cities and organisations were sent by the local councils of Rivne oblast during this week. They are asked to support the Victory Plan presented by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine.

Ternopil oblast

In Ternopil, 35 defenders will receive funds for the purchase of equipment. Since the beginning of the year, 2,977 soldiers have received financial assistance for the purchase of technical equipment.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during an air alarm, the Air Defense Forces destroyed 4 enemy UAVs of the Shahed type on the territory of the oblast. As a result of the attack, the utility room caught fire. The fire has been extinguished. A residential building and garages were also damaged as a result of the night attack. There were no injuries or killed.

Chernivtsi oblast

In the village of Bilivtsi of Khotyn community, a voluntary fire brigade was created on the basis of the Vohnebortsi Bilivtsi NGO. Volunteer firefighters will go out to fight fires not only in this remote village, but also in nearby villages. The fire team received 12 sets of German-made combat clothes and professional shoes, a generator, a defibrillator, a special medical kit for helping the injured and stretchers, fire hoses and barrels. In addition, special vehicles from the Polish partners of Khotyn community were previously provided.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Khrystia Freeland, Minister of Finance of Canada, announced that the country will provide Ukraine with $3.7bn billion within the framework of G7 financial support.

Lithuania sent Ukraine a new package of military aid. The Ministry of Defense of the country reported that the aid is intended for the preparation of the Ukrainian military for the winter period: the package included, specifically, generators, ammunition and mortars. In 2024, Lithuania also sent M113 armoured personnel carriers, ammunition for the Karl Gustav anti-tank grenade launcher and the RISE-1 system to Kyiv.

Ukrainian scouts received drones of various types from citizens of Latvia. The charity collection was initiated by Janis Slaydinsh, Major of the Armed Forces of Latvia, public figure and volunteer. He brought and handed over drones for the Military Intelligence of Ukraine.
