War in Ukraine today: latest news, November 19, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 634th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On November 19, there were 45 combat clashes. The enemy launched a total of 16 air strikes, 41 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Moreover, the enemy conducted air strikes on critical infrastructure facilities in Ukraine using Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs. Ukrainian air defense shot down 15 of the 20 attack UAVs. Russian terrorist attacks have unfortunately resulted in injuries among civilians. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there are no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group are observed. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the russian army maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Around 20 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Yanzhulivka, Mykhalchyna Sloboda, Leonivka (Chernihiv oblast), Khodyne, Holyshivske, Basivka, Myropilske, Novodmytrivka (Sumy oblast), Kozacha Lopan, Vovchansk, Bochkove, and Budarky (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy conducted failed assault operations in the vicinities of Synkivka, east of Petropavlivka and Ivanivka (Kharkiv oblast), where Ukrainian defenders repelled 7 attacks. The occupiers launched an airstrike near Petropavlivka (Kharkiv oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, and Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Lyman, the russian army conducted no offensives (assaults). The invaders launched airstrikes near Serebrianka forestry (Luhansk oblast) and Yampolivka (Donetsk oblast). The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at around 10 settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Serebrianka, Verkhnekamianske, Torske, Rozdolivka, and Spirne (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Bakhmut, the invaders made assaults in the vicinities of Klishchiivka and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast), where Ukrainian defenders repelled 11 attacks. More than 10 settlements, including Markove, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, and Niu York (Donetsk oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Avdiivka, the enemy conducted failed assault operations east of Novokalynove, east of Novobakhmutivka, Sieverne and Avdiivka (Donetsk oblast), where the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 9 attacks. The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 15x settlements, including Sukha Balka, Keramik, Tonenke, Yasnobrodivka, Netailove, and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Marinka, the enemy made unsuccessful assaults in the vicinities of Marinka and Pobjeda (Donetsk oblast), where Ukrainian defenders repelled 13 attacks. The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Marinka, Novomykhailivka, and Pobieda (Donetsk oblast) were under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Shakhtarske, the invaders conducted assault operations west of Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast), to no success. Around 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Bohoyavlenka, Prechystivka, Blahodatne, Staromaiorske, and Rivnopil (Donetsk oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the invaders did not make any assaults. More than 20 settlements, including Levadne, Malynivka, Charivne, Orikhiv, Novoandriivka, and Stepove (Zaporizhzhia oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Kherson, the settlements of Tiahynka, Ivanivka, Tokarivka (Kherson oblast), the city of Kherson and the city of Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast) suffered from enemy artillery shelling.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue their offensive operation towards Melitopol and offensive (assault) operations towards Bakhmut, inflicting losses in manpower and equipment on the occupation forces, exhausting the enemy all along the front line.

Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold their ground on the left bank of the Dnipro River (Kherson oblast) and continue to inflict fire on the enemy.

The Ukrainian Air Force launched 2 air strikes on buildups of troops, weapons and military equipment of the occupiers.

The Ukrainian rocket troops hit 1 buildup of russian troops, weapons and military equipment, and 3 ammunition depots.

First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska says that russia has abducted more than 19 thousand Ukrainian children. So far, 386 children have been returned who managed to somehow report their whereabouts. 

Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, says that a young man deported from Mariupol to russia was returned to Ukraine. The return took place in cooperation with Qatar, UNICEF, and the Ukrainian Embassy in belarus following negotiations with the russian side.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Volodymyr Fito, Head of the public relations service of the Ground Forces Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that russians have lost 4K troops towards Bakhmut and Lyman-Kupiansk since the beginning of November. According to him, on 18 November, Ukrainian troops eliminated about 360 invaders while repelling russian assaults.

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, towards Kupiansk, russia unsuccessfully conducted assault operations near Synkivka, east of Petropavlivka and Ivanivka, where the Defence Forces repelled seven attacks. Also russians launched an airstrike near Petropavlivka and fired mortars and artillery at at least 14 settlements.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that 15 more Mavic drones have been delivered to the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade named after Ivan Sirko. In addition, two more off-road vehicles were delivered to the air defence forces of Kharkiv oblast for mobile groups to destroy enemy Shahed.

Yesterday the enemy continued to shell the border and frontline settlements of Kharkiv, Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions.

Specifically, Kozacha Lopan of Kharkiv region, Ohirtseve, Hatyshche, Pletenivka of Chuhuiv region, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Kyslivka, Kotliarivka, Tabaivka of Kupiansk region and other settlements were under attack.

There were no civilian casualties over the day.

Heavy fighting is ongoing towards Kupiansk. The enemy made 6 attempts to attack Synkivka and Petropavlivka yesterday. All attacks were repelled by our defenders.

Mine clearance is ongoing. Yesterday pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 5.59 hectares of territory, where they found and defused 86 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

Russia lost 4,000 soldiers towards Bakhmut and Lyman-Kupiansk since the beginning of November. Yesterday Ukrainian troops eliminated about 360 invaders while repelling russian assaults.

Also russian troops continue to suffer significant losses near Avdiivka, which is why the number of deserters is growing. According to Oleksandr Stupun, Spokesman of Tavriia Defence Forces, the enemy command holds “educational talks” with its soldiers and uses physical force, sometimes even practising executions.

And russians launched a missile attack on Novohrodivka. In total, yesterday the invaders destroyed or damaged about 40 buildings, administrative buildings, shops and infrastructure.

Towards Donetsk, 1 person was injured in Maksymilianivka of Marinka community. Krasnohorivka, Zoriane and Kostiantynivka were shelled. In Selydove community, Ukrainsk was hit by missile attacks and as a result , 14 apartment buildings, 2 administrative buildings and 3 non-residential buildings were damaged. In Novohrodivka, 1 person was injured, 11 private buildings and 7 infrastructure facilities damaged. In Kurakhove community, Kurakhove and Hostre were shelled. There were isolated attacks on Avdiivka and Ocheretyne community.

Towards Lysychansk, Torske of Lyman community was under attack twice.

Ihor Moroz, Acting Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday russians injured two civilians: in Maksymilianivka and Novohrodivka.

Police officers from White Angels crew and volunteers evacuated two horses from Avdiivka. The animals escaped from a farm in Lastochkyne, which was destroyed by russians in the spring of 2023. According to Donetsk police, about 300 different animals were killed in the shelling.

Luhansk oblast

Yesterday russians shelled Makiivka and Nevske with artillery and mortars. They also launched an airstrike on Bilohorivka.

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that recently, the International Organisation for Migration brought humanitarian kits to Nevske, things that will be useful in the cold weather. Each package included a mattress, a blanket, bed linen, crockery, carimat, matches, candles, a solar-powered lantern, etc.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, informed that less than two months after the so-called ‘first elections’, the occupation authorities of Luhansk oblast recognised the problem with passportisation in remote areas of the region. In the occupied regions, russians increased the scale of civilian equipment seizures. They have a corresponding order from the kremlin, according to which representatives of enterprises are obliged to donate vehicles under a donation agreement. 

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the Kyiv RMA, reported that an infrastructure facility was damaged in Kyiv oblast as a result of another hostile drone attack. It’s the second night in a row that russian terrorists have been attacking the oblast with UAVs. The air raid lasted almost 5 hours.

Kyiv RMA reported that about a dozen enemy targets were hit by air defence forces and equipment on the territory of Kyiv and on the outskirts of the capital. The enemy once again used Shahed munitions.

According to Kyiv RMA, protective structures were repaired in almost 900 educational institutions of the oblast in 2022-2023. Construction of dual-purpose shelters is underway in 19 more schools and kindergartens, as well as repairs in 65 educational institutions.

A shelter with a martial arts training area was opened at gymnasium No. 62 in Darnytsia district of Kyiv. Funds from the local and state budgets were raised, and the Sohun children’s sports section co-financed the renovation. Up to 100 children practise martial arts in this space every day.

In Kyiv, free training sessions are being held at Kyiv Centre for National Resistance Preparation. Anyone can take part in a one- or five-day training programme. The training is offered in tactical medicine, psychological training, actions in conditions of radiation and chemical contamination, firearms training and practical shooting in an interactive shooting range, basics of mine safety, and tactical training.

Olena Zelenska, the First Lady of Ukraine, reported that in Vasylkiv, a house is being built for an IDP family as part of the Address of Childhood project to support foster families. A family from Kherson Oblast with seven children will receive a new home. The family used to live in Kakhovka, where their house was damaged by shelling. They escaped the russian occupation and found refuge in Kyiv oblast. 

Zhytomyr oblast

Oleksandr Kubrakov, Minister of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine reported that cooperation between Estonia and Ukraine in reconstructing Zhytomyr Oblast is expanding. This was discussed at a meeting with Ambassador of Estonia to Ukraine Anneli Kolk. The ministry reminded that in May 2022, Estonia announced that it was taking responsibility for the restoration of Zhytomyr Oblast.

Vitalii Bunechko, Head of Zhytomyr RMA, says that vehicles and equipment worth more than UAH 120 million will be purchased for the oblast air defence unit. The funds have been allocated by the regional military administration and the communities of Zhytomyr Oblast. Ukrainian defenders continue to put specially equipped pick-up trucks purchased by communities and volunteers on combat duty. 

The National Police of Ukraine received 7 dogs from the American Howard Buffett Foundation. These dogs, along with their handlers, will be trained at Zhytomyr Police Academy. They will specialize in explosives detection, trace work and drug detection.

Sumy oblast

According to Sumy RMA, during a massive nighttime enemy drone attack in Sumy oblast, air defence forces destroyed three attack drones. 

It is reported that russians fired 6 times at the border. There were 20 mortar and artillery attacks. Seredyna-Buda, Esman, Velyka Pysarivka, and Krasnopillia communities were shelled.

Sumy RMA reported that there were 189 explosions from various types of weapons in 11 border communities of Sumy oblast – the enemy made 25 attacks. Mykolayivka, Bilopillia, Khotin, Krasnopillia, Yunakivka, Velyka Pysarivka, Druzhbivka, Esman, Shalyhine, Seredyna-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske communities were under hostile fire.

The prosecutor’s office of Sumy Oblast reported that on November 18, two people were injured as a result of shelling of civilian infrastructure in Znob-Novhorodske by the russian military. A 56-year-old woman and her 28-year-old son sustained shrapnel wounds as a result of the artillery shelling of the settlement. 6 private households were also damaged.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of the RMA, reported that this week, the concept of a regional comprehensive programme for the implementation of veterans’ support was presented in Sumy Oblast. 

According to Sumy RMA,  humanitarian aid was sent to Kherson Oblast. A truck with 1,500 food packages was delivered to the oblast, which is suffering from hostilities.

Sumy RMA reported that more than half of all funds allocated for road repairs in Sumy Oblast have been directed to border communities. Funding will also take into account the real needs of local communities.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service reported that russians fired 5 times at the border of Chernihiv oblast. There were 31 mortar attacks. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk communities were shelled.

According to Chernihiv RMA, Syrai Lyceum started its long-awaited full-time education. To improve the conditions, about UAH 1.2 million was allocated from the state budget to replace windows, doors and strengthen the foundation. The modular shelter was built at local expense.

With the help of UNICEF representatives from the United Nations Children’s Fund, a modern school shelter was created in Kyselivka lyceum, with new furniture, spacious classrooms and its own gym. After the occupation of the oblast, the shelter was restored by the students’ parents and the school staff, with UAH 30K  allocated from the community budget.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council announced that during the night the occupiers shelled Nikopol region twice. They hit Chervonohryhorivka community and Nikopol with artillery.

The enemy covered Nikopol region with artillery. Almost one and a half dozen shells were fired. In Chervonohryhorivka community, 3 residential buildings and an outbuilding were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

Assistance to veterans in returning to a normal life and opening their own business was initiated in Vinnytsia oblast by the Social Center of Vinnytsia Oblast and the MHP-Community charitable foundation and presented a project supporting micro-enterprises of war veterans and their families in Vinnytsia oblast, which has started with the Ukrainian Veterans Fund grant support. This initiative will help veterans to return to normal life and open their own businesses.

Poltava oblast

In Poltava, the  military are provided with free dentures at the regional dentistry center. It is carried out with money from the regional budget.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA reported that at night an enemy UAV was shot down over Zvenyhorod region. Five houses were slightly damaged by debris. People were not injured. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to Zaporizhzhia RMA, the russian army conducted 132 strikes on cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast on November 18. Specifically, they targeted Novodarivka, Novoandriivka, Poltavka, Levadne, Bilohirya, Luhivske, Temyrivka, Kamyanske, Pyatyhatky, Plavni, and Mali Shcherbaky a total of 115 times using artillery.

On November 18, the SES of Zaporizhzhia oblast reported that in Stepnohirsk, a residential building caught fire due to russian shelling. The fire affected an area of approximately 180 square meters. There were no casualties or injuries reported.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitaliy Kim, Head of the Mykolaiv RMA reported that russian forces carried out artillery strikes on the city of Ochakiv in Mykolaiv ‎oblast. There were no casualties or injures.‎

The Children Services, the Department of Social Protection, and Mykolaiv Territorial Center have addressed various war-related issues in ‎cooperation with international foundations, including UNICEF. They provided significant ‎assistance to Mykolaiv, distributing 5K sets of new clothing for children aged ‎3 months to 12 years. They have also been registering children from low-income families, ‎large families, and orphans, providing them with clothing through the territorial centres in ‎Mykolaiv.‎

From the beginning of the full-scale invasion until the end of occupation by the russian army on the ‎right bank of the Dnipro River, the enemy relentlessly bombarded Mykolaiv oblast, destroying infrastructure and killing civilians. The majority of the region’s inhabitants were ‎forced to evacuate their homes and seek refuge in safer areas. At present, almost all ‎residents of Mykolaiv oblast have returned home.‎

Odesa oblast

The South Operational Command reported that due to the storm in ‎the Black Sea, the russian army has been holding missile carriers at their bases for the ‎second consecutive day. The Ukrainian Naval Forces reported that the presence of Kalibr ‎missile carriers was detected in the Black Sea on November 16.‎

Kherson oblast

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the Kherson RMA reported that ‎Bilozerka in Kherson oblast was attacked by the russian army. A man, injured during the attack, ‎sought medical attention independently. Following the shelling, the settlement experienced a power ‎outage.‎

In addition, Kherson RMA reported that in the morning, russian forces ‎shelled Kherson, injuring five people, including a child. ‎

During the day, in Kherson oblast, the Defense Forces destroyed five tanks, a self-propelled howitzer ‎‎Msta-S, three cannons, the Murom-M video surveillance system, five units of armoured vehicles, ‎a fuel and lubricants depot, a field supply point, and an observation point of the russian army. ‎Additionally, 14 russian occupiers were eliminated.‎

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA ‎reported that on November 18,‎ the russian army conducted 71 shelling attacks on Kherson oblast, targeting ‎residential quarters in populated areas and the territory of an agricultural enterprise in Kherson ‎region. Four people were injured.‎

On the temporarily occupied left bank of of the Dnipro River in Kherson oblast, russian forces have begun actively robbing ‎local residents, using trucks to steal property from uninhabited buildings.‎

The National Resistance Center reports that the occupation authorities brought in 34K russian ‎educational books to schools in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast.‎

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council sent a diesel Nissan SUV to the soldiers of the 4th Rapid Response Brigade of the National Guard towards Lyman.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Worthy. Free. Unbreakable youth unity forum was organized by the New Generation of Ukraine with the support of the RMA. The program of the forum included classes on military-patriotic education and training for national resistance, which was provided by Zakarpattia Center for National Resistance Training.

In Zakarpattia, 38 veterans and families of fallen defenders will receive new housing. They will be able to buy a house or an apartment in any settlement of Ukraine with the funds of the targeted state subsidy received by the oblast. Over UAH 74 mln were transferred to recipients, including 19 IDP veterans.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The 4th truck with 1 650 kg of food was sent to Zaporizhzhia oblast thanks to the Maltese aid services in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast and the Republic of Poland. One box weighing 10 kg contains cereals, oil, canned goods, sugar, coffee, tea, sweets. The set is designed for a family of three people for a week.

Lviv oblast

British farmers, together with Lviv RMA, sent 35 more cars for military units of Ukraine. This is already the 10th transfer as part of the Pickups for Peace campaign, which has been in effect since March of this year. In total, since March, British friends have sent 260 cars to the front.

Nina Yakhimets from Mostysk donated a car for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Her family also paid for parts to repair it. Volunteers of Mostyshchyna Volunteer Center have already delivered transport to the front for the local defender.

Biskovytsia community of Sambir region sent a Toyota Land Cruiser to the front lines. The SUV will help Marian Chvertlyk, soldier-gunner of the 3rd separate rifle battalion, perform combat tasks.

Rivne oblast

As part of the Travelling Academy, an information event about the cross-border cooperation program Interreg NEXT Poland – Ukraine 2021-2027 was held in the walls of the National University Ostroh Academy in Rivne. The event was conducted by experts from the Program’s representative office in Lviv and the head of the Center for European Projects from Warsaw, with the support of Rivne RMA.

UAH 60K were collected in the Regional Scientific Lyceum of Rivne to support the Armed Forces. Students organized the charity fair under the patriotic slogan Strength in Unity. The collected funds have been donated to purchase a Starlink, a charging station for a lyceum graduate serving in the Armed Forces. The rest of the funds will be spent on anti-drones and a car.

Kindergartens in Rivne oblast received materials on mental health, hygiene and mine danger from the United Nations Children’s Fund in Ukraine. There are about 936 sets for the early development of children.

Ternopil oblast

Over a hundred servicemen received wristwatches from Ternopil City Council. This year, on the occasion of professional and public holidays, the watches were presented to servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, participants in hostilities, police officers, students whose parents were killed in the war, volunteers, public activists, and employees on the occasion of professional and public holidays.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

700 sets of thermal clothing for the military were sent from Khmelnytskyi. There are 300 sets for one of the rifle battalions, purchased with taxpayer funds. 400 sets for the newly formed unit for air protection were obtained thanks to international cooperation. For the same division, spotlights, laser pointers, thermal imagers, tablets, as well as household goods (sleeping bags, sleeping mats, thermoses, generator) were sent.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA reported that on the initiative of the International Organization for Migration, a seminar was held in Chernivtsi on unification of places of IDPs’ temporary residence  for representatives of regional military administrations, territorial communities and managers of IDPs’ places of temporary residence.

Czernowitzstraße (Chernivtsi street) officially appeared in Stadt Düsseldorf. “This is another confirmation of the close ties between our sister cities,” said Roman Klichuk, Chernivtsi Mayor.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The state of New York confirmed the recognition of the Holodomor as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Andrii Yermak, Нead of the Office of the President, met with Pierre Elbron, special representative of the President of the French Republic on economic aid and recovery of Ukraine. In particular, they discussed providing security guarantees to Ukraine.

Andrii Yermak, Нead of the Office of the President, held a phone conversation with Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Production of Italy. They discussed the situation at the front, further security cooperation, and preparation of the 12th package of EU sanctions against russia.

Bulgaria will refuse to import russian oil half a year earlier than planned. Assen Vasiliev, Bulgarian Finance Minister, emphasized that such a decision is useful for the citizens of his country, as it stops exports and money sent to russia, and also guarantees stability in the domestic fuel market.

Olaf Scholz called on putin to “take the first step towards a possible peaceful settlement in Ukraine.” “He (volodymyr putin) must withdraw the troops. However, there is currently no indication that this will happen. putin should not succeed in his goal of using force to annex a part of a neighbouring country,” the German chancellor emphasized. 

The President’s Fund for the Support of Education, Science and Sports initiated the participation of Ukraine in one of the largest global events in the field of educational technologies (EdTech) – Bett UK 2024. For the first time, Ukrainian startups will be presented at the EdTech conference, which will be held in London on January 24-26, 2024 .

Nova Poshta opened five more branches in Germany during October. These are points in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Dresden, Frankfurt am Main and Cologne. They want to increase the number of Nova Poshta branches in Germany to 13 by the end of the year.
