War in Ukraine today: latest news, February 08, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 715 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

The enemy continues to wage a war of aggression. Despite significant losses, he does not give up his plans for the full occupation of Ukraine, ignores the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, strikes, attacks both military and civilian objects. The enemy actively uses aviation and quadrocopters of the “FPV” type, conducts assaults with the support of armored vehicles.

The operational situation in the east and south of Ukraine remains difficult.

During the day, 52 combat clashes took place. In total, the enemy launched 13 missile and 54 air strikes, fired 37 rocket salvo fire systems at the positions of our troops and populated areas. As a result of the Russian terrorist attacks, unfortunately, there are dead and wounded among the civilian population, among whom are children. High-rise and private buildings, as well as other civilian infrastructure, were destroyed and damaged.

On the Volyn and Poliske directions, the operational situation has not changed significantly. There were no signs of the formation of offensive groups. Certain units of the Armed Forces of Belarus perform tasks in the border areas with Ukraine.

In the Siverskyi and Slobozhanskyi directions, the enemy maintains a military presence in the border areas, conducts sabotage and reconnaissance activities, attacks populated areas from the territory of the Russian Federation, and increases the density of mine-explosive barriers along the state border of Ukraine. The enemy launched an airstrike in the area of Staritsa settlement of Kharkiv region. More than 20 settlements were hit by artillery and mortar fire from the enemy, among them Karpovychi, Chernihiv region; Stara Huta, Bachivsk, Volfine, Kindrativka, Myropillya, Grabovskoe, Popivka of the Sumy region; Udy, Strelecha, Vovchansk, Budarky, Chugunivka, Topoli of the Kharkiv region.

In the Kupyan direction, our defenders repelled 4 attacks in the areas of Sinkivka and Ivanivka settlements of the Kharkiv region, where the enemy tried to break through the defenses of our troops. More than 15 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, and Berestov in the Kharkiv region, came under artillery and mortar fire.

In the Lyman direction, our soldiers repelled 3 enemy attacks in the area of Terna settlement of Donetsk region, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to break through the defense of our troops. The enemy carried out an airstrike in the area of the settlement of Bilogorivka, Luhansk region. About 10 settlements were affected by artillery and mortar shelling, including Nevske, Bilogorivka, Serebryansk Forestry of Luhansk Oblast and Terna, Torske, Serebryanka, Verkhnokamyanske, Rozdolivka of Donetsk Oblast.

In the direction of Bakhmut, the Defense Forces repelled 3 enemy attacks in the areas of Ivanivske and Klishchiivka settlements of the Donetsk region, where the enemy tried to improve the tactical position. About 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Vasyukivka, Bogdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, New York of the Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivka direction, our defenders repelled 17 attacks in the area of Avdiivka settlement and another 5 attacks in the Pervomaiskyi, Nevelskyi districts of the Donetsk region, where the enemy, with the support of aviation, tried to break through the defense of our troops. Also, the enemy carried out an airstrike in the area of the settlement of Oleksandropol, Donetsk region. About 15 settlements, including Keramik, Ocheretine, Novobakhmutivka, Lastochkine, Avdiivka, Karlivka of the Donetsk region, were hit by enemy artillery and mortar attacks.

In the Mariinsky direction, the defense forces continue to hold back the enemy in the districts of Georgiyivka, Pobeda and Novomykhailivka of the Donetsk region, where the occupiers tried to improve their tactical position 11 times. The enemy carried out airstrikes in the areas of Kurakhove and Novomykhailivka settlements of the Donetsk region. Such settlements of the Donetsk region as Krasnohorivka, Kurakhove, Pobyeda, Novomykhailivka, Katerynivka, Elizavetivka came under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.

The enemy did not conduct offensive (assault) actions in the Shakhtarsky direction. He carried out airstrikes in the Vodiane, Staromayorske, and Rivnopil settlements of the Donetsk region. About 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Vugledar, Prechistivka, Blagodatne, Staromayorske, and Rivnopil of the Donetsk region, were hit by artillery and mortar attacks.

In the Zaporizhzhia direction, defense forces repelled an attack west of Vervovoy Zaporizhzhia region, where the enemy unsuccessfully tried to break through the defenses of our troops. The enemy carried out airstrikes in the areas of settlements of Novodarivka, Orihiv, Zaporizhzhia region. More than 20 settlements, including Levadne, Gulyaipole, Charivne, Novodanilivka, Stepove, Kamianske of the Zaporizhia region, were hit by artillery and mortar fire.

In the area of responsibility of the “Odesa” anti-aircraft missile defense system in the Kherson direction, the enemy does not give up its intention to knock out our units from the bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnieper. So, during the day, 1 unsuccessful attempt to storm the positions of our troops was made. The city of Kherson and the settlements of Beryslav, Ingulets of the Kherson region and Ochakiv of the Mykolaiv region came under artillery and mortar fire. The enemy carried out airstrikes in the areas of Kachkarivka and Chervyn Mayak settlements of the Kherson region.

During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces struck 7 areas of concentration of personnel, weapons and military equipment of the enemy.

Units of the missile forces struck 2 ammunition depots and 2 artillery pieces of the enemy.

Russia sentenced 33 Ukrainian servicemen to terms of 27 to 29 years. This was reported by Ombudsman Lubinets. The Investigative Committee and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation regularly report that the occupation courts in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions sentence captured Ukrainian soldiers to long prison terms.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Russia has damaged 1,938 objects of cultural infrastructure. This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

Ukraine sent 25,000 tons of humanitarian wheat for Nigeria through the grain corridor. This was announced by the Deputy Prime Minister for the Reconstruction of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov. This is the first vessel this year with humanitarian wheat chartered by the UN World Food Program as part of the Grain From Ukraine program.

What happened in Ukraine today:

The enemy continues to wage a war of aggression. Despite significant losses, it does not abandon its plans for the complete occupation of Ukraine, ignores the laws and customs of war, uses terror tactics, launches strikes, and attacks both military and civilian targets. The enemy is actively using aircraft and FPV quadcopters, conducting assault operations with the support of armored vehicles.

The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.

During the day of February 8, there were 52x combat engagements. The occupiers launched a total of 13x missile and 54x air strikes, carried out 37x MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, russian terrorist attacks resulted in dead and wounded civilians, including children. Residential private and apartment buildings, and other civilian infrastructure in were destroyed and damaged.

Volyn and Polissya axes: no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: the adversary maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. The invaders launched an air strike in the vicinity of Starytsya (Kharkiv oblast). More than 20x settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Karpovychi (Chernihiv oblast), Stara Huta, Bachivs’k, Volfyne, Kindrativka, Myropillya, Hrabovs’ke, Popivka (Sumy oblast), Udy, Strilecha, Vovchans’k, Budarky, Chuhunivka, Topoli (Kharkiv oblast).

Kup’yans’k axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 4x attacks near Syn’kivka, Ivanivka (Kharkiv oblast). In that area, the enemy made attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at more than 15x settlements, including Dvorichna, Syn’kivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).

Lyman axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 3x assaults in the vicinity of Terny (Donetsk oblast). In that area the adversary made attempts to breach Ukrainian defense, to no success. The invaders launched an air strike near Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Nevs’ke, Bilohorivka, Serebryans’ke forestry (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Tors’ke, Serebryanka, Verkhn’okam’yans’ke, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).

Bakhmut axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 3x attacks in the vicinities of Ivanivske and Klishchiivka (Donetsk oblast), where the occupiers made attempts to improve their tactical situation. Around 10x settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Vasyukivka, Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, New York (Donetsk oblast).

Avdiivka axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 17x attacks near Avdiivka and 5x more attacks near Pervomais’ke, Nevel’s’ke (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the occupiers, with air support, made attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. The invaders launched an air strike near Oleksandropil’ (Donetsk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 15x settlements, including Keramik, Ocheretyne, Novobakhmutivka, Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, Karlivka (Donetsk oblast).

Mar’inka axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the invaders in the vicinities of Heorhiivka, Pobjeda and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the adversary made 11x attempts to improve its tactical situation. The invaders launched air strikes in the vicinities of Kurakhove, Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Kurakhove, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, Katerynivka, Yelyzavetivka were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.

Shakhtars’ke axis: the adversary conducted no offensives. The occupiers launched air strikes in the vicinities of Vodyane, Staromaiors’ke, Rivnopil’ (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at around 10x settlements, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Blahodatne, Staromaiors’ke, Rivnopil’ (Donetsk oblast).

Zaporizhzhia axis: the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 1x attack west of Verbove (Zaporizhzhia oblast). In that area, the occupiers made attempts to breach Ukrainian defense, to no success. The invaders launched air strikes in the vicinities of Novodarivka, Orikhiv (Zaporizhzhia oblast). More than 20x settlements, including Levadne, Hulyaipole, Charivne, Novodanylivka, Stepove, Kam’yans’ke (Zaporizhzhia oblast), were under artillery and mortar fire of the occupiers.

Odesa operational-strategic group, Kherson axis: the occupiers do not abandon their intention to drive Ukrainian units out of their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro. Thus, during the day, the enemy made 1x unsuccessful assault on positions of Ukrainian troops. The adversary fired artillery at the city of Kherson, the settlements of Beryslav, Inhulets (Kherson oblast), Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast). The enemy launched air strikes in the vicinities of Kachkarivka and Chervonyi Mayak (Kherson oblast).

During the day of February 8, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 7x concentrations of troops, weapons and military equipment of the occupiers.

The Ukrainian missile troops hit 2x ammunition depots and 2x artillery systems of the russian invaders.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

The General Staff reported that Ukrainian troops repelled 79 russian attacks towards Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka on 7 February. Most of the attacks were  towards Avdiivka and Marinka.

Illia Yevlash, Head of the press service of Khortytsia operational-tactical group, said that towards Lyman-Kupiansk, the enemy attacked 8 times from Su-34 attack aircraft and Ka-52 helicopters yesterday.

Kamikaze drones inflicted another 25 fire damage. The enemy fired 561 times from artillery, mortars and other weapons.

There were 13 combat engagements. 239 invaders were eliminated and injured. 42 pieces of russian equipment were destroyed, such as, tanks, armoured personnel carriers, armoured personnel carriers, self-propelled artillery pieces, 24 UAVs, 7 shelters, and a warehouse with ammunition were discovered and destroyed.

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that about 20 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were under enemy artillery and mortar attack: Veterynarne, Nesterne, Komisarove, Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove, etc.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders repelled 3 attacks near Synkivka and Ivanivka, where the enemy tried to break through the defences of our troops.  

At 10 pm a private house and a gas pipe were damaged as a result of shelling in Kupiansk. A 67-year-old man sustained light injuries.

At 10:02 pm, the enemy shelled Hlushkivka village, Kupiansk region. A private farm was damaged and a 42-year-old man sustained an explosive injury.

At 7 pm, the invaders shelled Kurylivka village, damaging a private household.

At 3 pm, the invaders fired on Vovchansk, using MRLs. There was no information about destruction or casualties.

At 8:25 am, a warehouse building of a private enterprise and 1 residential building were destroyed and 1 damaged outside Hryhorivka village, Kupiansk region. There were no casualties.

Combined teams of bomb experts cleared 16.08 hectares of territory and destroyed 190 explosive ordnance.

14 Mavic-3 drones purchased at the expense of Vovchansk community were delivered to the soldiers of the 92nd Separate Mechanised Brigade named after Ataman Ivan Sirko.

Donetsk oblast

The press service of Donetsk police said that the enemy struck 14 times at civilians. The explosions were in 6 settlements: Avdiivka, Krasnohorivka, Selydove, Chasiv Yar, Ocheretyne and Novopokrovske. At least 27 civilian objects were damaged, such as, 13 residential buildings, four educational institutions, an enterprise and a car park.

At around 12:30 am, russia launched 8 missiles at Selydove. One of them hit an apartment building. According to preliminary information, russia used KN 23 and S-300 missiles for the attack. The shelling killed a 50-year-old woman, rescuers removed her body from the rubble. 7 people were injured. Among them is a boy who will turn 7 tomorrow and two men aged 18 and 51, and four women aged 38, 42, 64 and 88.

An investigation and operational team, bomb experts, police paramedics and all relevant services were working at the scene. Police officers provided assistance to people in the dark. As of now, 53 apartment buildings, 10 private houses, 4 educational institutions, 2 administrative buildings, a private enterprise and 24 vehicles have been damaged. People continue to report the destruction to the police.

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, towards Pokrovsk, a person was injured in Avdiivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, Lyman community was shelled 18 times and the outskirts of Kostiantynivka community targeted.

Towards Bakhmut, two private houses were damaged in Chasiv Yar community. A house in Serebrianka of Siversk community was damaged. 3 houses were damaged in Zvanivka.

In total, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 7 times. 81 people, including 12 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Russian military shelled Avdiivka. The shelling killed a 72-year-old woman and damaged two houses. More than 900 residents remain in the city.

Vitalii Barabash, Head of Avdiivka City Military Administration, reported that before russian military massively shelled Avdiivka community more than 50 times and launched about 30 airstrikes. Since the beginning of the year, russian army has launched more than 800 airstrikes on Avdiivka.

Oleksandr Tarnavskyi, Commander of Tavriia operational-tactical group, stated that  on 7 February, Ukrainian soldiers hit a russian helicopter with a crew towards Avdiivka . The Alligator attack helicopter was destroyed by a man-portable air defence system.

The food kits and powerful generators to supply strategically important vital facilities in Donetsk oblast were provided by the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) in Ukraine and the Howard G BUFFETT Foundation (HGBF).

More than 10,000 people were buried in Mariupol between March 2022 and February 2023. At least 8,000 are likely to have been killed by war-related causes: either direct attacks or lack of medical care or clean water. This is the conclusion of an investigation study devoted to the destruction and russian crimes in the occupied city and conducted by Human Rights Watch, Truth Hounds and SITU Research. They analysed satellite images, photographs and videos of the burial sites. At four cemeteries in Mariupol, the researchers noted a significant increase of graves, where thousands of people were buried in individual and trench-type graves. These are Starokrymske and Novotroitske cemeteries, the cemetery on Pavlova Street and in Vynohradne village. The researchers also note in the report that they identified hundreds of graves in a cemetery near the city, in Manhush village.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, russian army shelled Bilohorivka, Nevske and the villages around it with artillery and mortars. They are also attacking Bilohorivka with weapons of various calibres. The invasive assaults are almost continuous, several attacks a day.

To conduct another wave of forced mobilisation, the invaders are waiting for the elections to be completed exclusively on the territory of russian federation. In the occupied regions, it continues, especially in the frontline cities. For instance, in Lysychansk and Rubizhne, men receive summonses along with their russian passports. They are given both when applying for an administrative service and when trying to leave the city.

A special blogger education centre was opened in Luhansk to train propagandists. The so-called “training” for people aged 14 to 22 will be conducted by practitioners from russia.

Oleksandr Striuk, Head of Sievierodonetsk City Military Administration, reported that touring builders are replacing expensive plumbing with cheap ones in the apartments without the owners’ permission. Social issues in the city can only be resolved with a russian passport. In Syrotyne and Borivske, the occupation authorities are not taking measures to deal with flooding.

Luhansk Border Guard Detachment, Pomsta brigade, informed that soldiers managed to shoot down several dozen russian UAVs in a week and 25 russian drones were captured in the last day alone.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The head of Kyiv RMA Ruslan Kravchenko reported that three people were injured in the oblast as a result of a massive russian attack on February 7. 58 private houses, 6 apartments in 5 high-rise buildings, a cultural center, an educational institution, a post office, and 12 cars were damaged due to falling debris. Work is ongoing to eliminate the consequences of the terrorist missile attack by the occupiers. Owners of damaged buildings will be provided with all necessary assistance.

The State Emergency Service of Kyiv reported that in the Holosiivskyi district of the capital, the work on liquidation of the consequences of the russian attack, which lasted until the evening of February 7, was completed. As a result of the attack, 4 people died there and 39 were injured. 40 people were evacuated from the building and 28 were saved. Psychological help was provided to 85 people. During the work, the policemen managed to save the dog, which was blocked in the destroyed apartment.

KCMA reported that in the Dniprovsyi district, the heating network was damaged due to falling debris. 355 residential buildings remained without heating. The combustion center, located in this area, is powered by modular boiler houses. Restoration work is underway.

Ruslan Kravchenko, the head of Kyiv RMA, said that the students of the Gogol Lyceum in Brovary region,  were finally able to return to their school desks. In half a year, a modern anti-radiation shelter was built at the facility. It can accommodate more than 700 people comfortably. The shelter is equipped with everything necessary, modern ventilation and fire protection systems are installed there, there are supplies of water and medicine, and an alarm system.

The SSU discovered a cache of weapons and explosives in the Kyiv oblast. It was left by the russian occupiers during their escape from the oblast, so that later the hidden weapons could be used by the russian SRG.

Recently, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard conducted “Paw in the palm” canister therapy for two groups of children. The event was conducted by a qualified team of canine experts and psychologists at Borodyanka Animal Husbandry Center. For children who survived the occupation, the opportunity to communicate with four-legged friends is especially valuable. The child was delighted to watch the demonstration of tricks and skills, learned a lot of interesting information about the behavior of dogs and handling them.

The Minister of Health of Denmark, Sophie Lede, and the head of the Mary Elizabeth Hospital in Copenhagen, Merete Lange, visited the Kyiv Regional Children’s Hospital in Boyarka. The medical partnership between the hospitals was launched on the sidelines of the First Ladies and Gentlemen Summit.

In the capital, a number of capital streets and avenues were renamed – this decision was made at a meeting of the Kyiv City Council as part of de-russification. Some of them will now be named after fallen heroes and will be associated with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In particular, Air Force Avenue was renamed Air Force Avenue of Ukraine.

Zhytomyr oblast

The president’s office reported that the participation of Portugal in projects for the restoration of Zhytomyr oblast was discussed at the meeting between the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi and the Portuguese delegation led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Portuguese Republic, João Gomes Cravinho. Zelensky highly appreciated Portugal’s readiness to participate in the reconstruction of educational institutions in Zhytomyr oblast and the results of the Regional Reconstruction Forum in Zhytomyr, which was held with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Education of the Portuguese Republic.

Zhytomyr regional military administration reported that Estonian partners met with families of family-type orphanages who found shelter in the oblast. During the meeting, a presentation on the construction of housing for three families of migrants was presented.

0Sumy oblast

During the past day, the russians carried out 17 shelling of the border territories of Sumy oblast, in total, 154 explosions were recorded – airstrikes, mortars, grenade launchers and artillery shells, dropping of VOG from UAVs, firing by FPV kamikaze drones. 4 communities of the oblast were shelled: Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka and Seredina-Buda communities.

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that at night, the russian military carried out 5 shellings – 18 mortar and artillery strikes were recorded. Velyka Pysarivka, Shalyhine, Esman, Druzhbivka communities came under shelling.

In Sumy oblast, energy workers who died while performing their professional duties to ensure the operation of critical infrastructure facilities, restoration of energy supply and power grids destroyed by the enemy were posthumously honored with honorary awards. Orders “For Courage” of the III degree were presented to the families of the heroes by the head of the RMA, Volodymyr Artyukh.

From now on, the Sumy Regional Art Museum named after Nikanor Onatskyi has an equipped shelter that will serve to protect employees and visitors, and will also help prevent damage to museum funds. As reported in Sumy RMA, in addition to repair work, wall drying systems were also installed in the museum, thanks to a joint project of the French Institute in Ukraine and the ALIPH Foundation, together with the Swiss company BioDry.

Sumy RMA reported that 5 more “Safety Classes” have become operational in the territory of Okhtyrka, Shostka and Konotop regions of the oblast.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv border detachment reported that on February 7, russian troops shelled the border community of Semenivka. An FPV-drone kamikaze attack was recorded in the area of the village of Semenivka and 7 mortar strikes in the direction of the village of Bleshnya.

The Head of Chernihiv RMA Vyacheslav Chaus announced that six communities of the oblast – Chernihiv, Kulykivka, Mena, Bakhmach, Nizhyn and Bobrovytsya – signed Memoranda of Understanding with UNICEF. The focus of further actions is investment in children and youth, in their safety, quality education and social services. Nizhyn, Koryukivka and Mena communities signed a document on cooperation with DiXi Group as part of the project on the development of municipal energy plans. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council reported the occupiers fired artillery at Nikopol region. They hit one of Myrove community’s villages. Today the enemy attacked Nikopol region 7 times. They fired 3 times from artillery and launched kamikaze drones. They hit the district center, Chervonohryhorivka and Pokrovsk communities.

In Nikopol 17 private houses, 11 outbuildings, 3 power lines, and 4 gas pipelines were damaged. In two other communities, two cars were hit.

According to Serhii Lysak, Head of the RMA 2 vehicles were delivered to the military from Dnipropetrovsk region. Before that, the vehicles were inspected.

Vinnytsia oblast

A sports event was held in Vinnytsia for soldiers undergoing rehabilitation. The defenders participated in both individual and team competitions.

Poltava oblast

Philip Pronin, Head of the RMA announced that turrets were delivered to mobile firing groups from Poltava region. 80 units were manufactured by local entrepreneurs. This equipment will be installed on vehicles. It can also be used to protect critical infrastructure.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration reported that the region has transferred 6 vehicles to several units of the defense.

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that the russian army carried out 176 strikes in 20 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast over the course of a day on  February 7. In particular, it attacked Orikhiv and Novodarivka from the air, and used drones and artillery in other settlements. 

Mykolaiv oblast

During the day, on February 8, the russian army attacked Mykolaiv oblast with artillery and drones. Shelling was recorded in Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities and the regional centre. There were no casualties.

On the night of  February 8, russian forces attacked civilian infrastructure in Mykolaiv with drones. More than 30 residential buildings, an industrial facility and a sports complex were damaged. 

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that Air Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed three Shahed 131/136 attack drones over Mykolaiv oblast. 

A pilot from the 299th Tactical Aviation Brigade named after Lieutenant General Vasily Nikiforov, Vladislav Rykov, was killed on  February 7 while performing a combat mission. The pilot had 385 combat missions.

Odesa oblast

Southern Armed Forces reported that on the night of  February 8, the russian army attacked Odesa oblast with Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drones launched from the Black Sea and the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast. Air defence forces shot down five UAVs over the oblast.

Odesa City Council said that in Odesa, a drone attack on the night of February 8 damaged five buildings, including a high-rise and an educational institution. Two patrol policemen who were on their way to the scene were injured. 

Ministry of Communities, Territories and Infrastructure  announced on February 8 that the bulk carrier SKY GATE with 25,000 tonnes of humanitarian wheat for Nigeria has started its journey through the Ukrainian grain corridor. This is the first vessel this year to be chartered by the UN World Food Programme under the Grain From Ukraine programme. 

Kherson oblast

On February 7, the Southern Defence Forces destroyed a tank, five cannons, two mortars, 12 vehicles and killed 57 russian army servicemen on the left bank of the Kherson oblast.

On February 7, russian troops fired 60 times at Kherson oblast. They launched 233 shells from artillery, mortars, MLRS, tanks, UAVs and aircraft. Three people were injured. In Zmiivka, Kherson oblast: at least 9 private houses were damaged. The shelling also damaged houses in Kyzomys, Bilozerka and Zymivnyk, and a kindergarten in Antonivka. In Kherson, the Korabel neighbourhood and Dniprovsky district suffered the most from russian shelling. 

According to Ministry of Energy, as a result of the evening shelling on  February 7, 866 consumers in Kherson were left without electricity. In the region, 1.2 thousand customers were disconnected due to technological disruptions. Repair works are underway. 

Yuriy Sobolevsky, First deputy head of the Kherson Regional Council, reported that on the eve of the russian presidential elections, the russian guard and occupation police were deployed to the TOT of Kherson obkast to carry out “preventive work”. The occupiers are taking measures aimed at “integrating” Ukrainians, creating paramilitary camps for children. In addition, the military is forcing people who have been injured as a result of russian shelling to write statements about domestic injuries.

Volyn oblast

Ihor Burdeynyi, Commander of the military formation, received the certificate of honor of Volyn oblast and the award of Volyn oblast. Instead, the soldier presented the symbol of the unit as a gift – the flag To Fight Means to Live with the signatures of soldiers.

Zakarpattia oblast

Specialists of the Regional Clinical Hospital named after Andrii Novak of Zakarpattia Regional Council were awarded the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, medics of the Hospital have been called up to the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

About a hundred boxes with developmental materials were sent to preschools in Kolomyia region. These are, in particular, board games, interesting children’s literature, which will make it possible for children to spend their time in kindergarten in an informative and useful way. In total, Prykarpattia received 376 boxes with the assistance of the Ministry of Education and Science and the UNICEF representative office in Ukraine.

Lviv oblast

A professor from the Commonwealth University of Virginia will come to Lviv on a volunteer mission. Bruce Rubin is Professor Emeritus, Head of the Department of Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University (the USA), Chief Physician at Richmond Children’s Hospital, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Physiology and Biophysics. Bruce Rubin, an expert in pediatric pulmonology and intensive care, will counsel patients and lecture physicians. The American professor’s two-week stay program involves communication with doctors and patients in children’s clinics in Lviv: Okhmatdyt and the West Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Center.

The RMA reported that in 2024, psychological training is planned for 20K teachers of the oblast, who should become first contact persons and recognize anxiety states in children. The United Nations Children’s Fund is ready to provide us with support in some of these areas.

The total size of Lviv’s development budget in 2024 is UAH 1.9 bln. For comparison, last year it amounted to UAH 4.5 bln. If take away all guarantee obligations from UAH 1.9 bln, there remains UAH 739 mln, which are planned to be spent as follows: UAH 221 mln for medicine and rehabilitation of the military; UAH 93.3 mln for education; UAH 225 mln for critical infrastructure; UAH 28.2 mln for recovery after missile strikes; 30 mln for co-financing by the city for international grant projects.

Rivne oblast

Klesiv community and the city of Winterswijk (the Netherlands) became partners. Intentions were confirmed by online signing of the Memorandum on Municipal Cooperation. The strengthening of relations became possible with the assistance of the USAID HOVERLA project. Cooperation will cover economy, municipal services, energy, education, culture and social sphere. Partners will develop joint projects, exchange experience, develop friendly relations between citizens of the two municipalities, organize events and work meetings.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that the special forces unit of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces received 100 FPV drones for combat missions thanks to the taxpayers’ funds.

The RMA reported that fighters of the air mobile brigade, performing special tasks in the combat zone, received 20 FPV drones with batteries thanks to the taxpayers’ funds.

The Barrier-Free Council was created in Ternopil community. The collegial body was created to effectively ensure a barrier-free environment for all population groups. Specialists with life experience of overcoming barriers for themselves and other people, development and implementation of conceptual and operational documents regarding the systematic implementation of specific measures on the territory of the community will be involved in the work.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi sent 10 DJI MAVIC 3T Thermal quadcopters worth less than UAH 2,1 mln to the military thanks to the taxpayers’ funds .

Chernivtsi oblast

Professor Serhii Melenko, serviceman from Bukovyna, lecturer at Chernivtsi National University, medics of legal sciences, received an Golden Cross honorary badge from Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for his courage and successful performance of tasks during the battle.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The United Kingdom will continue duty-free trade with Ukraine for almost all goods until 2029. London abolished tariffs on all its trade with Ukraine after the outbreak of full-scale war – this arrangement was supposed to last until March 2024, but now it has been decided to extend it to facilitate Ukrainian trade.

Italy finally approved the government’s decision to extend military aid to Ukraine until the end of 2024. 218 out of 400 members of the lower house of parliament voted for the relevant decision. After the government approved the corresponding decree in December, Guido Crosetto, Defense Minister, said that that Italy “once again decided to be on the side of the freedom of countries and respect for international law in order to achieve, in accordance with the position of NATO allies and the EU, a just and lasting peace.”

In 2023, Taiwan‘s Ministry of Economy introduced controls on the export of a number of high-end machine tools to russia and belarus, and now expands the scope of export restrictions to 77 additional products. It is noted that this is Taiwan’s desire to comply with export sanctions imposed by the EU, the USA and Japan. Commodities added to the new export control list include sophisticated equipment, namely, CNC machine tools, machining centers, lathes and lathes, milling and grinding machines.

Ukraine has started negotiations with Denmark on the conclusion of a bilateral security agreement. They discussed key elements of future bilateral security obligations and agreed on a schedule for further negotiations.

Vitalii Koval, Head of the State Treasury of Ukraine, met with representatives of the Embassy of the Republic of India in Ukraine, led by Harsh Kumar Jain, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. They discussed trade cooperation.

Pia Kauma, President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, spoke from the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. “The OSCE seeks to move from words to action. We want russia to bear responsibility,” she said.
