War in Ukraine today: latest news, 17 May, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 814th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 8:30 pm:   

The defense forces of Ukraine resolutely restrain the enemy’s onslaught and respond harshly to any attempts to advance. Since the beginning of the day, the russian occupiers launched 15 missile and 70 air strikes on Ukrainian defenders, 105 MLRS attacks, and active offensive and assault operations of the occupiers continue towards Pokrovsk and Dnipro river area.

Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian units are strengthening their defense in the border areas of Kharkiv oblast and conducting reconnaissance. The enemy carried out 15 airstrikes using 18 KABs. The enemy’s losses in this area amounted to 133 enemy servicemen killed and wounded, 36 units of weapons and military equipment. 8 enemy dugouts were destroyed. The situation is controlled by the defense forces.

Towards Kupiansk, there were six clashes. The enemy launched airstrikes in the areas of Kupiansk-Vuzlovy and Vilshana.

Towards Lyman, the russian occupiers dropped eight guided aerial bombs in the vicinity of Lyman.

Towards Siversk, the enemy launched an airstrike near Hryhorivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, the number of clashes with the occupiers increased to 14. Since the beginning of the day, the enemy carried out six airstrikes in the vicinity of Chasiv Yar, Pivnichne, Druzhba and Toretsk.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy continues to try to improve the tactical position – 25 combat clashes took place. The hottest situation is near Novooleksandrivka. Sokil and Nevelske were added to the previously mentioned settlements. The situation is under control.

Towards Kurakhove, there was another airstrike in the vicinity of the village of Bohatyr. 

In the Vremivka, there were 3 enemy attacks. The enemy was active in the area of Staromaiorske and towards Kliuchove – Rozdilne.

Towards Dnipro river area, the occupiers continue to try to oust our soldiers from the bridgeheads on the left bank of the Dnipro River. The enemy continued attacks towards the village of Krynky – the number of the clashes here increased to 12. Ukrainian units are steadfastly holding their positions. In addition, russian terrorists launched a missile attack on Odesa. Civilians were injured. Information on the consequences of another crime of the russian federation is being clarified.

In other directions, the situation at the moment has not changed much.


Referring to Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, 4 more children were returned to the controlled territory of Ukraine. They are three brothers and a sister. 

The President of Ukraine signed a draft law on the voluntary mobilization of certain categories of prisoners into the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This law provides for the possibility of being released on parole for contract military service.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff reported that the Defence Forces repelled russian attack towards Holyoke-Lyptsi. The russian army lost 35 soldiers, 15 pieces of equipment, including a tank, an armoured combat vehicle and an artillery unit.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on the situation towards Kharkiv at 10:30am, saying that the situation in Vovchansk is under control, a firefight continues in the area of Starytsia. In Kupiansk region, two attacks continue towards Krokhmalne-Berestove and Kolomyichykha-Miasozharivka. The General Staff calls the situation under control.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi informed that the russian army focused its main efforts towards Strilecha – Lyptsi and the capture of Vovchansk, with further access to Bilyi Kolodiazh and the launch of an offensive to the rear of Ukrainian troops. He noted that the russians had reinforced the operational and tactical grouping of troops, but failed to break through the Ukrainian defences. Syrskyi says heavy fighting is expected.

The air alert in Kharkiv on 16-17 May was the longest since the start of the full-scale invasion. According to the Alerts system – the threat to the city lasted 16 hours and 33 minutes.

Serhii Bolvinov, Head of Kharkiv police investigation department,  said at the national marathon that the police have information that russians took up to 40 civilians prisoner in Vovchansk who wanted to enter the territory controlled by Ukraine.

The russian military has armoured vehicles, but they hardly ever use them to break through the borders in Kharkiv oblast, they mostly enter on foot,” says Andries, platoon commander of Code 9.2 attack drones, call sign “Grandfather”. He believes that the russian officers chose this tactic to “slip through” minefields and avoid being seen by Ukrainian drone operators. His platoon, part of the 92nd Separate Assault Brigade, is currently defending a section of the border north of Kharkiv. 

Estonian broadcaster ERR reported, citing a statement by Ants Kiviselg, commander of the Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre, that about 2,000 russian troops are engaged in direct combat towards Kharkiv and about the same number are in reserve. In total, according to Kiviselg, about 35,000 russian troops are concentrated in the area, and the grouping is likely to increase in the near future.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, stated that the invaders launched two strikes with anti-aircraft missiles, specifically on Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. 29 people were injured and 3 killed.

The press service of the regional Prosecutorʼs Office reported that a 74-year-old woman was injured as a result of airstrikes on Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi. A medical facility, residential buildings, and outbuildings were damaged in the village.

Referring to the press service of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, as a result of russian strikes on Vovchansk, a 35-year-old civilian man was killed and a 60-year-old  injured.

On 16 May, at 12:50am, a UAV hit an open area in Kharkiv. The windows of a 5-storey residential building were partially damaged. The building of the city district administration was also damaged. 

At 12:30am, Nemyshliansky district of Kharkiv was affected due to the shelling of the open area by S-300. There was no damage or casualties. 

On May 17, at 12:09am, a UAV hit an open area of Kharkiv. 3 houses were damaged. 

At 7pm, as a result of the shelling of the village of Kurylivka, Kupiansk region, the roof of a private house and a fence were damaged.

At 3:20pm, a tractor hit an explosive object in a field in the village of Elitne, Kharkiv region, as a result of which the equipment was partially damaged

At 2:30pm, in Vovchansk, 4 employees of a medical facility, a civilian man and the head of the MVA were injured as a result of shelling at an intermediate evacuation point.

At 1pm, as a result of shelling from MLRS in the village of Synelnykove, private houses were damaged. 2 men aged 35 and 33 were injured. A 35-year-old man was killed.

At 12am, a 52-year-old man was injured as a result of the shelling of Vovchansk. 

At 8am, the village of Krasne, Kharkiv oblast, was hit, an 86-year-old man was killed as a result of dropping ammunition from a drone. 

Towards Kharkiv, there were 10 combat clashes. Ukrainian soldiers repelled 8 attacks in the vicinity of Lyptsi, Starytsia settlements and Vovchansk, Kharkiv oblast. The enemy is trying to break through the defences of Ukrainian units towards Shebekino – Vovchansk. The situation in Vovchansk is under control.

Towards Kupiansk, the Defense Forces successfully repelled 6 enemy attacks. In some areas, Ukrainian troops are taking measures to improve the tactical situation.

Another combat clash continues towards Krokhmalne – Berestove. The situation is under control.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reported that Ukrainian troops on the eastern defence front have repelled 11 russian attacks since the beginning of the day. 10 attacks are still ongoing.

At least 3 people were killed and 2 injured in the shelling. Krasnohorivka was under massive attack, with three people killed in action today. In addition, 1 resident of Chasiv Yar and 1 person in Bahatyr of Velyka Novosilka community were injured.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 17 May is as follows:

Towards Volnovakha, in Bohoiavlenka of Vuhledar community, a house was destroyed, 5 more and an enterprise damaged. 

Towards Pokrovsk,Mykhailivka of Novohrodivka community, 5 people were injured. Kurakhove and Kurakhivka were shelled.

Towards Kramatorsk, Terny, Yampolivka and Zarichne of Lyman community were shelled. 

Towards Bakhmut, 10 private houses, 2 infrastructure facilities and an apartment building were damaged in Chasiv Yar community. 5 private houses and an apartment building in Zalizne of Toretsk community and 4 houses in Siversk were damaged.

In total, russians attacked settlements in Donetsk oblast 10 times over the day. 343 people, including 23 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Luhansk oblast

On 16 May, Nevske, located near the front line, was subjected to numerous artillery and tank attacks. The russians hit residential buildings and logistics routes. Various kinds of destruction were caused to six houses. There is damage to households and premises in Novoliubivka, targeted by the occupiers during the day. The invaders hit Makiivka with a Grad rocket system at a time when Ukrainian police were trying to distribute food to local residents. According to preliminary information, no one was injured. The enemy also fired mortars and artillery at Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka.

Towards Kupyansk, russian troops continue to attack near Miasozharivka and other settlements. In some areas, Ukrainian troops are taking measures to improve the tactical situation.

Towards Lyman, the occupiers tried eight times to break through the defences of Ukrainian soldiers.

Towards Siversk, no losses of Ukrainian positions were allowed.

At Bilorichenska underground mine, a russian investor failed to fulfil another promise. The new ownerHaving received the enterprise from the so-called ‘lnr’ in the absence of competitors and started with staff reductions. Miners and engineering staff were left without jobs, but they were not paid the severance pay and salaries for the past months.

The demonstrative reconstruction in Lysychansk ended with an unsuccessful attempt to turn on the centralised heating. Thus, residents of the houses located in the area of Krasna Street complain about the complete lack of attention of the occupation authorities to the problems of the residents. Housing is being restored at the residents’ own expense.

Dozens of square kilometres of the occupied Luhansk oblast are covered by forest fires. Residents of Sievierodonetsk and Kreminna are suffering from smoke. The occupation authorities are not taking any measures.

In Popasna, destroyed by the russians, people are deprived of any of conveniences.

The invaders are trying to establish wired communications in the frontline towns to replace the mobile phones they have cut off.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine, the government has allocated over UAH 1.5b to rebuild Zmiivska TPP in Kharkiv oblast and Trypilska TPP in Kyiv oblast. UAH 726m has been allocated from the state budget reserve fund, and UAH 826m from the fund for eliminating aggression consequences. The Prime Minister noted that the government, the energy sector and all responsible services are currently working continuously to improve the electricity situation in the country as much as possible.

Ihor Meshchan, Director of the Department of Social Development and Veteran Policy, announced that funding for Kyiv Regional Social Support Programme for Defenders of Ukraine in 2024 has almost doubled. The programme provides financial assistance to ATO (JFO) participants, persons who took part in activities necessary to ensure the defence of Ukraine, protect the security of the population and the interests of the state in connection with russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, volunteer fighters, family members of the deceased Defenders of Ukraine, as well as families of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes.

Borodianka was visited by a delegation from Denmark – Minister of Urban and Rural Affairs of Denmark Morten Dahlin, Ambassador of Denmark to Ukraine Ole Egberg Mikkelsen and UNHCR Representative in Ukraine Caroline Lindholm Billing. The guests saw the consequences of the russian military aggression and the progress of the recovery of Kyiv oblast. According to the UNHCR, the Office has already installed 85 modular houses in Kyiv oblast and carried out repairs in more than 2,500 war-affected buildings.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the UMA, said that medical institutions in Kyiv oblast will receive 7 new MG4 Electric vehicles. The new cars will be delivered to Irpin, Boryspil, Kalynivka, Bucha, Berezan, Hostomel, and Boiarka. International partners helped to purchase the vehicles.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs held the Communication Forum in the capital, and invited experts from the Centre for Countering Disinformation, cyber police, United 24 Media, the Ministry of Defence and other agencies shared their experience. They discussed the main challenges and threats to government agencies arising from social media during the war.

An exhibition of paintings brought from Europe was opened at Khanenko Museum in Kyiv with the support of the Dutch Embassy. The works by representatives of the Hague School of Painting were put on display in the capital as a sign of solidarity and support for Ukrainians fighting russian aggression. The exhibition was initiated by Dutch collector Willem Jan Gogsteder. According to the organisers, this is the first time that old European art has been brought to Ukraine during the full-scale invasion of russia. 

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr oblast, the Administrative Service Centers will be ready to accept conscripts to update data from May 18. In the oblast, 58 administrators of ASCs are connected to the accounting system. Also, in the near future, the electronic cabinet of the conscript will be launched.

Sumy oblast

According to the RMA, at night and in the morning, russians attacked the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast nine times. There were 36 mortar and cannon artillery attacks. Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman and Znob-Novhorodske communities were shelled.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged as a result of the shelling of Uhroidy by the russian military on the night of 17 May. According to the village elder Vitalii Kirichenko, the artillery shelling lasted for about an hour. The russian strikes damaged three 2-storey apartment buildings – the roof of one of the buildings burned down, and doors and windows were smashed in the others. The building of a former dormitory was also destroyed.

The RMA reported that on 16 May, russians fired 32 times at Sumy oblast, with 166 explosions recorded. 10 border communities were shelled: Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Hlukhiv, Esman, Shalyhyne, Druzhbivka, Seredyna-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske.

The regional SES informed that on 16 May, rescuers together with local fire brigades extinguished a residential area fire caused by enemy shelling.

The evacuation of the population from the border areas subject to constant attacks by the aggressor country, continues in the region. On 17 May, SES employees joined the evacuation efforts in the town of Bilopillia. They helped people to get into evacuation vehicles and transported them to a designated place of temporary residence.The evacuees were provided with psychological and other necessary assistance.

According to Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office’s report, five servicemen of the 423rd Guards Motorised Rifle Regiment of the 1st Tank Army of the Western Military District of the russian federation will be tried in Sumy oblast. According to the investigation, during the occupation of Trostianets on 13 March 2022, they illegally detained and tortured local residents. 

Chernihiv oblast

According to the State Border Guard Service, russian troops struck 4 border communities of Chernihiv oblast with various types of weapons with  a total of 146 explosions recorded. The following areas were under enemy fire: Novhorod-Siverskyi community – 16 mortar strikes; Semenivka community – 33 hits from mortars and barrel artillery; Snovsk community – 42 strikes from barrel artillery, mortars and automatic grenade launchers; Horodnia community – 55 strikes from barrel and rocket artillery, mortars and FPV drones.

Chernihiv Regional Military Administration informs that as of April 23, 2024,  156 enterprises were identified critical for the functioning of the economy and ensuring the livelihood of the population in a special period and the corresponding status of another 51 enterprises in 2024 confirmed. 

Ihor Tykhomyrov, Artistic Director of Chernihiv Youth Theatre, announces that on May 17-18, two performances were canceled due to the mobilization of three actors. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of RMA, reported that the occupiers attacked Nikopol with a kamikaze drone. The attack damaged a high-rise building in the city. According to the updated information, yesterday’s attacks in the evening damaged another high-rise building, a religious institution and 2 cars.

During the day, the occupiers carried out almost a dozen and a half attacks in Nikopol, attacking with 9 kamikaze drones and launching about three dozen artillery shells. Nikopol, Marhanets and Myrove communities were under attack. The shelling caused a fire and damaged an agricultural company, a shop, 4 houses, 3 outbuildings, a gas pipeline and power lines.

Vinnytsia oblast

Vinnytsia City Council reported that Serhii Morhunov, ​​Vinnytsia Mayor, visited the soldiers of the 120th Separate Tank Brigade and handed over 60 FPV drones, 20 Mavic 3T night drones, 15 thermal imagers, 12 charging stations, and 20 searchlights.

The Defender’s Roadmap has been developed in Vinnytsia with information and contacts for military personnel after discharge from service.

Kirovohrad oblast

In the village of Adzhamka, Kirovograd oblast,  where a centre for people who have no place to live because of the war was set up, free housing is offered to IDPs. Currently, 17 residents of Kherson, Kharkiv and Donetsk oblasts live there, while the centre is designed to host 60 people.

Poltava oblast

Filip Pronin, Head of the RMA, reported that Ukrainian Defense Forces destroyed three enemy UAVs over Poltava oblast. 

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, compensation has started to be paid to those entrepreneurs who suffered damage as a result of a russian missile falling on the Central Hotel on September 21, 2023.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the occupiers struck 6 settlements of Zaporizhzhia oblast 438 times. 197 UAVs attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Novoandriivka. 16 MLRS strikes targeted Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne. There were 225 artillery strikes on the territory of Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Levadne, and Malynivka. Four reports of housing destruction were received. Civilians were unharmed.

The occupiers carried out 9 assaults towards Orikhiv. 8 of them were towards Staromaiorske and 1 towards Robotine.

Fighters of the Special Operations Center “Omega” of the National Guard of Ukraine destroyed an ammunition depot that the russian military arranged in the forest belt.

Communities of Zaporizhzhia oblast handed over nine pickups to the Defense Forces in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Currently, tenders are underway for the next 30 vehicles.

The International Atomic Energy Agency successfully conducted another rotation of the mission at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. This is already the 19th team of agency experts since the establishment of the permanent monitoring mission. The agency noted that experts heard sounds of artillery and missile shelling during the past week, as well as gunfire. Despite having access to the site, dispatch centres, and reactor units, the IAEA mission was not allowed to communicate with the personnel of the ZNPP.

Mykolaiv oblast

During the night of 17 May, a Shahed 131/136 UAV was destroyed by the anti-aircraft defense forces in Mykolaiv oblast.

On 16 May, at 12:20, 16:44, and on 17 May, at 04:13, the enemy shelled Kutsurub community with artillery. Also, at 11:55, the enemy directed an FPV drone kamikaze towards the settlement of the community. There were no casualties.

General Colonel Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, personally awarded Junior Sergeant Oleksandr Rakovskyi with the Cross of the Brave for his service and contribution to the defense of Ukraine. Oleksandr from the village of Pryvilne in Bashtanka region, serving as a combat medic in the mortar battery of the 22nd Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, distinguished himself near Bahmut. He has been involved in combat operations since January 2023.

A call center with trained staff and a service and communication department has been launched based on healthcare facilities in Bashtanka region with the financial support of the German government. Most patients prefer remote appointment scheduling in wartime conditions. Along with the launch of the call center, an updated reception of the outpatient department, renovated surgical department, new gynecological office with barrier-free access, a new elevator in the four-story building, and a solar station capable of covering up to 70% of the hospital’s own needs will officially start operating for the residents of Bashtanka. Additionally, medical and non-medical equipment has been purchased for the needs of the medical institution.

Odesa oblast

On 17 May, russia launched a missile attack on Odesa. One of the missiles caused a fire, damaging civilian infrastructure and resulting in casualties. Currently, five injured individuals are known, with three hospitalized for treatment of their injuries, while two received assistance on-site.

During the night of 17 May, the air defense forces destroyed one Shahed-136/131 UAV over Odesa oblast. Additionally, in the morning, a reconnaissance drone Orlan-10 was shot down over the region.

Kherson oblast

This morning the enemy shelled Tiahynka. A resident was injured. The victim has an explosive injury. Doctors are conducting examinations and providing assistance.

Yesterday, the enemy attacked Antonivka, Poniativka, Chornobaivka, Inzhenerne, Beryslav, Kachkarivka, Zolota Balka, Novoberyslav, Vysoke, Mykhailivka, Novovorontsovka, Lvove, Kozatske, Vesele, and the city of Kherson. Four high-rise buildings, seven private houses, a medical facility, a shop, a farm building, and four private cars were damaged. Two people were killed, and six others wounded.

It is reported that the enemy intensified its actions and carried out 13 assaults on the left bank of the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast. After suffering losses, they withdrew to their original positions.

The enemy’s confirmed losses over the past day amounted to 113 people and 47 units of weapons and military equipment. A field supply buildup, a command station, a UAV launch site, and three observation posts were destroyed.

Volunteers evacuated three residents of Tiahynka. The enemy continuously shells coastal settlements with all types of weapons. The security situation remains critical.

The organization Save Ukraine helped evacuate four more children from the temporarily occupied community of Kherson oblast. Since the beginning of this year, 88 children have been successfully returned to the controlled by Ukraine territory.

An Alley of Glory was opened in Vysokopillia in honour of the locals who died in the russian-Ukrainian war. Banners with portraits and names of community fighters who disappeared without a trace, gave their lives in the struggle for the freedom and independence of Ukraine, were installed there.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent a Mitsubishi L200 car, 7 Starlink satellite modems, 5 EcoFlow Delta Max charging stations and 5 armoured OUKITEL tablets to the military unit 4788 thanks to the budget funds.

Zakarpattia oblast

A one-day exhibition of photo works entitled Zakarpattia and War. Two difficult years. was opened in Uzhhorod. This is already the 2nd exhibition during the period of the full-scale invasion, with which Zakarpattia photojournalists and journalists want to show how the oblast has been helping, working, volunteering, seeing off its Heroes all this time. Iryna Breza, one of the organisers, noted that these 50 photos are about how Zakarpattia is going through the war.

The final practical classes and tests for the first and advanced courses of Zakarpattia Regional Center for Training the Population for National Resistance took place. Trainees arrived in Uzhgorod together with instructors from all oblasts of the oblast to summarise the 96-hour training course, to show the level of acquired knowledge, skills and practical skills in military affairs.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Educators and students of the Vocational College of Culture and Arts (Kalush) held the Angels of Victory charity auction. In total, over 30 lots went under the hammer during the auction, for which UAH 330,000 was recovered. All funds will be donated to the needs of Ukrainian defenders.

Prykarpattia received electric cars for medical institutions of the oblast thanks to the joint project of the World Bank Ukraine Strengthening the Health Care and Life Saving System (Heal Ukraine) and the Ministry of Health.

Ivano-Fankiv kindergartens received generators from the Blau-Gelbes Kreuz German organisation.

Lviv oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Konstantinos Nakis, President of Chicago Atlantic Trident company, and his partner Dmitrii Lampert. The American investment company will consider the possibility of investing in the construction of affordable housing and industry in Lviv oblast.

Lviv City Council held a meeting with Marie-Dokha Bezanceno, Assistant Secretary General of NATO for Public Democracy. They agreed on developing opportunities to attract expert experience, train Ukrainian specialists, and spread Ukrainian experience to those communities where it would be interesting.

A charity evening was held in Lviv in support of the NextStep Ukraine military rehabilitation centre. An auction was also held at the event to support the centre’s work. NextStep Ukraine provides assistance to military personnel with complex neurotraumas, amputations, and musculoskeletal disorders.

Lviv City Hall purchased 170 FPV drones and 26 Mavic 3/3T/3E drones worth UAH 6,1m community funds thanks to the Lion’s Revenge initiative. In the first four months of 2024 (from January to April inclusive), Lviv supported the army for UAH 266m.

The RMA reported that Horodok community sent 107 Mavic 3 Pro drones to the Armed Forces.

The RMA reported that IT company N-iX sent 8 laptops to the Recruiting Center of the Ukrainian Army in Lviv.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that all 49 Center for the Provision of Administrative Services of Rivne oblast are ready to provide data update services to conscripts. Administrators were trained and relevant instructions were sent out.

Ternopil oblast

Volodymyr Vazhynskyi, Acting Chief of the RMA, together with Brigadier General Volodymyr Shvediuk, Commander of the Operational Command West, inspected the work and staffing of the anti-machine gun battalion of Ternopil oblast. It was created by order of the President of Ukraine in order to protect the critical infrastructure of the oblast from enemy drones. During the inspection, the troop commander noted that Ternopil battalion is the best equipped of all the battalions being formed in other oblasts of Ukraine.

The RMA held a meeting with Bohdan Raichynts, President of the European Congress of Ukrainians. They discussed intensification of cooperation with the Congress and the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of ECU in Ternopil.

In Ternopil, the annual cycling race of war veterans Honouring the Memory Of Defenders Of Ukraine took place. Veterans Ivan Balashov and Anatolii Veresenko, who will travel through 7 oblasts of Ukraine, started their route on May 15. They will cover over 1 000 km from Uzhhorod to Kyiv.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The 2nd charity event With Ukraine In The Heart took place in Khmelnytskyi in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. During the event, there was a fair for visitors from various educational institutions of Khmelnytskyi oblast and public organisations, during the patriotic concert an art auction of military artefacts (obtained by soldiers in battle) was held, the funds from which will be donated to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the UN World Food Program. In Bukovina, the UN World Food Program will provide financial support to institutions of social protection of the population. It is about a geriatric boarding house and psychoneurological boarding houses. Specifically, the program will partially cover the costs of catering establishments.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, announced that the country allocates a €750m aid package to Ukraine. The new package includes additional funding for the future transfer of F-16 aircraft to Ukraine, air defence, maintenance of artillery installations and funds for the transfer of additional artillery installations, shells and anti-tank mines.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland. They discussed the need to protect Kharkiv oblast with air defence systems.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Joseph Newma Boakai, President of Liberia. They discussed consequences of the aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine.

Timothy Garton Ash, British historian, donated UAH 1,4m to the Armed Forces from his own prize. He, together with the Come Back Alive Foundation, provided the Ukrainian military of the 22nd Separate Mechanised Brigade with drones and night optics, donating his Lionel Gelber Award for the book Homelands: A Personal History of Europe.

The US imposed sanctions on russian persons and organisations for assisting in the supply of weapons from the DPRK to the russian federation. Sanctions were introduced against 2 individuals from russia and 3 russian organisations.

On the territory of the European Union, broadcasts of 4 more mass media, which spread russian propaganda, were suspended. The listed mass media are under the constant direct or indirect control of the leadership of the russian federation and play an important role in the deployment and support of russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, as well as in the destabilisation of neighbouring countries.

Taraka Balasuriya, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, stated that the country will send a delegation to the russian federation to return its citizens from the war in Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Defense of Sri Lanka, 16 of its citizens were killed in the war against Ukraine.

There is a queue for passenger buses on the Ukrainian-Romanian border. The same services are already available at individual crossing points with Moldova and Poland.
