The enemy launched a total of 2 missile strikes, 25 airstrikes and 25 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, the russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Private residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure facilities were destroyed and damaged.
The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.
Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group were noticed. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.
Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the russian army maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. Towards Lyman, Ukrainian defense forces repelled 8 attacks in the vicinity of Makiivka (Luhansk oblast) and east of Terny (Donetsk oblast). The invaders launched an airstrike in the area of Zvanivka (Donetsk oblast). The occupiers fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebryanka, Verkhnokamianske, and Spirne (Donetsk oblast).
Towards Bakhmut, Ukrainian defenders repelled 5 attacks near Bohdanivka, Klishchiivka and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements, including Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Avdiivka, the enemy made failed attempts to breach Ukrainian defense with air support, . Ukrainian defenders repelled 15 attacks near Novobakhmutivka, Stepove, Avdiivka, and 10 attacks south of Tonenke, Nevelske and Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast). The invaders launched an airstrike near Novobakhmutivka settlement (Donetsk oblast). More than 10 settlements were shelled, including Stepove, Lastochkyne, Avdiivka, and Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast).
Towards Marinka, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinity of Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). The enemy launched 4 failed attacks on positions of Ukrainian defenders in the area with air support. The settlements of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Marinka, Pobieda, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast) were under artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Shakhtars’ke, the russian army conducted no offensives. Around 10 settlements, including Urozhaine, Staromaiorske, and Rivnopil (Donetsk oblast), came under artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Zaporizhzhia, Ukrainian defense forces repelled 3 enemy attacks west of Verbove and Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Around 20settlements, including Poltavka, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, and Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast) came under artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Kherson, the enemy fired artillery at the settlements of Darivka, Antonivka, Kizomys (Kherson oblast), the cities of Kherson and Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast). The adversary launched an airstrike in the vicinities of Krynky and Olhivka (Kherson oblast).
Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold their ground on the left bank of the Dnipro River (Kherson oblast) and inflict fire on the enemy.
The Ukrainian Air Force launched 1 strike on a buildup of enemy troops, weapons and military equipment, 2 strikes on air defense systems. Also, Ukrainian air defense forces shot down 7 Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs.

The Defense Blog reports that Ukraine received the first batch of AQ 400 Scythe long-range kamikaze UAVs. The drones are manufactured by the Ukrainian company Terminal Autonomy.
The Center for Countering Disinformation reports that russia creates fake Telegram channels of Ukrainian brigades and battalions. The channels were created to spread russian fakes and narratives aimed at discrediting both the command of brigades or battalions and the military themselves.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian troops conducted assaults with the support of aviation towards Kupiansk. Over the day, the Defence Forces of Ukraine repelled 6 russian attacks near Synkivka and Petropavlivka.
Andrii Demchenko, Spokesman of the State Border Guard Service, reported that in the border areas of Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts, russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups are becoming more active. Daily attacks continue in these areas.
The press service of the 14th separate brigade named after Prince Roman the Great informed that soldiers destroyed two russian infantry fighting vehicles. Nadiia Zamryha, Spokeswoman of the brigade, said that one of the vehicles was hit with a Javelin missile system.
Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, stated that over 20 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were under enemy artillery and mortar attacks, including Udy of Bohodukhiv region, Kozacha Lopan of Kharkiv region, Starytsia, Vovchansk of Chuhuiv region, Topoly of Kupiansk region and others.
Bolohivka, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Pishchane, Berestove of Kupiansk region were hit by air strikes.

Yesterday the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 14 enemy attacks near Synkivka, Kupiansk region.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, said that yesterday russians were active along the entire contact line. They launched nearly a dozen attacks in Kupiansk, including on Stelmakhivka. Their next attempts failed in Serebrianka forest. They stormed there with the support of aviation. The enemy opened fire on Nevske and Bilohorivka with artillery and mortars.
According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, residents of the liberated settlements are waiting for the delivery of food and important household items. Four de-occupied villages of Krasnorichensk community with civilians remaining are provided with aid. Yesterday food and hygiene kits were distributed to every resident of Nevske and Novoliubivka.
Luhansk police delivered mattresses, sleeping bags, blankets, bed linen, chairs, matches and other necessary items to Makiivka and Novoliubivka. The humanitarian aid was delivered to the homes of locals to ensure their safety.
Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, confirmed that russian invaders have installed payphones in three cities of Luhansk oblast to replace mobile phones. However, these payphones cannot be used to call outside the city or to mobile phones.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv RMA, announces that almost UAH 800 million in compensation for the repair of damaged housing has already been agreed upon as part of the eRestoration in Kyiv oblast.
The forum Borodianka: The Future of the Community was held in Kyiv oblast with the participation of representatives of the public, central and local authorities, and people’s deputies. As reported in the RMA, Borodianka was included in the Government’s experimental reconstruction project, also under the UNITED24 program, restoration of 4 high-rise buildings is underway there. The first stage of the reconstruction includes more than 40 objects.
A presentation of the manual for psychological assistance “How are you, bro?”, created as part of the socially important Support Group project, took place in the capital on December 16. The manuals contain clear algorithms that will help people without psychological education to support those around them, listen to them without exhaustion and conflicts, even when they feel stressed themselves. To date, more than 100,000 printed manuals have been prepared and distributed.
The remains of russian military ammunition found in Irpin were turned into works of art. These items can be seen in the Pavlo Tychyna museum in the capital, where the charity exhibition “Free Ukraine. Ukrainian sappers – Risk Artists” opened. The purpose of the art project is to raise funds to produce protective suits for sapper units engaged in demining Ukrainian territories.
A monument to the crew of the soviet armoured train, Taraschanets, was dismantled in Kyiv. The monument will be kept in the museum-workshop of Znoby-Holembievski.
The Marines presented the Zhytomyr community with a thank-you note and a battle flag and showed a photo of a drone with the inscription “Zhytomyr” that had returned twice after Russian shelling and had become a talisman for them. Zhytomyr Mayor Serhiy Sukhomlyn says that a week ago, the community handed over another batch of drones to the soldiers of the 37th Marine Brigade.
In Zhytomyr, benefactors handed over a batch of medicines worth UAH 100 K to treat wounded soldiers. Money was collected in Poland as part of the Ukrainian-Polish children’s charity project, in which students of Zhytomyr School of Ballet AVANTE participated.
Sumy RMA reported that at night and in the morning, the russians carried out 9 mortar attacks on the border areas and settlements of the oblast, there were 20 explosions. The communities of Krasnopillia (17 explosions) and Znob-Novhorodske (3 explosions) were shelled.
A 69-year-old woman was killed in her own house as a result of enemy artillery shelling of Krasnopillia. As reported in the Prosecutor General’s Office, on December 17, around 12:50 p.m., the russian military fired on the civilian infrastructure of the city from a self-propelled artillery installation. Homes and vehicles of local residents were also damaged.
On December 16, the russians carried out 26 shelling attacks on the border region – there were a total of 138 explosions. As reported by the RMA, 11 communities were shelled: Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Krasnopillia, Khotyn, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Seredina-Buda, Esman, Shalyhine, Druzhbivka, and Znob-Novhorodske communities. The enemy struck with mortars, artillery, AGS, dropped 5 explosive devices from an unmanned aerial vehicle, and used small arms.
Sumy RMA reported that on December 16, shelling of Yunakivka community resulted in one civilian injury. The russian military made 5 mortar strikes on the territory of the community.

The enemy activated sabotage and intelligence groups in Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts. As reported by the SBGS, one of such groups was exposed in Sumy oblast – thanks to the coordinated actions of the border guards and territorial defense forces, the saboteurs were knocked out across the state border. The message says that in order to effectively counteract the enemy groups, the units that defend the section of the border with the russian federation train together and hone the interaction between neighbouring units and positions.
The Forests of Ukraine State Enterprise reported that the branch of Trostyanets forestry which was damaged as a result of the russian occupation of the city from February 23 to March 26, 2022 was restored. In one month of occupation, the russians destroyed the administration building, garages, processing workshop, damaged the farm buildings of five forestry companies, and destroyed the building and exhibits in the Forest Museum.
The Northern Border Detachment reported that russian troops fired 3 times from infantry fighting vehicles and 4 – from mortars on the territory of Semenivka community near Karpovychi, Zaliznyi Mist and Hremyach settlements.
From January 1, 2024, all mobilized recruits of Chernihiv will be paid a one-time payment of UAH 20K, and the family members of the fallen defenders will be partially compensated for their monthly utilities. Such a decision was made at a meeting of the executive committee of Chernihiv City Council. Also, the program provides for one-time financial assistance to Chernihiv military personnel who received a contusion, injury or maiming as a result of hostilities.
In Chernihiv, the windows that were damaged by a russian missile attack on August 19 began to be installed for the residents of the house. They were financed by the American charitable organization Gem. The program also works in six other communities of Chernihiv oblast, where more than 1,700 windows broken during hostilities and shelling were replaced.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council announces that during the night the enemy shelled Nikopol region with artillery twice. They hit the regional center and Pokrovsk community. The occupiers fired half a dozen shells. During the day, the enemy used 3 kamikaze drones and shelled Nikopol region twice. The infrastructure object was damaged.
The head office of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Vinnytsia region reports that rescuers arranged safety training for children in two regions of Vinnytsia – Mohyliv-Podilskyi and Haisyn.
In Kropyvnytskyi, a memorial plaque was opened in honour of Viktor Sharyi, a participant of the russian-Ukrainian war, and regional chieftain of the Ukrainian Cossacks. He was killed near Bakhmut, Donetsk oblast, during mortar shelling by russian troops on December 18, 2022.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
The State Emergency Service reports that two fires broke out in Polohy region on December 16 as a result of russian shelling.
According to the Air Command East, two russian Shahed UAVs were shot down in Zaporizhzhia oblast.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that there were 12 attacks by the russian army west of Novopokrovka and Robotyno repelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine towards Zaporizhzhia.
There were 174 russian army attacks in Zaporizhzhia oblast on December 16. Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Novodarivka, Bilohiria, Levadne, Krasne, Charivne, Huliaipilske, and Mali Shcherbaki were hit by UAVs. The territory of Orikhiv, Novodanilivka, Novoandriivka, Preobrazhenske, Levadne, Robotyne, Stepove, Plavny, Lobove and Piatikhatky was shelled with artillery.
The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported that employees of the occupied ZNPP are forced to obtain russian passports and sign contracts with Rosatom. Those who refuse are having their passes to the plant cancelled.
Vitaliy Kim, Head of Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, said that in Mykolaiv oblast, russian troops fired twice on Ochakiv community on December 16. The town of Ochakiv and the water area were under attack. There were no casualties reported.
The press service of the Emergency Service reports that on December 16, a car exploded on an anti-personnel mine near the village of Yevhenivka in Snihurivka community in Mykolaiv oblast. The vehicle sustained significant damage, but the people were unharmed. However, they were unable to get to safety on their own as the area of the explosion was densely mined. A group of pyrotechnics was sent to help the men. The specialists evacuated the people by creating a safe “corridor” about 140 metres long.
In Mykolaiv, the volunteer organisation Help ZSU Mykolaiv produces power banks for the military, one of which is enough for four Mavic charging stations. In winter, they also create chemical heating pads and stoves for the frontline.
Odesa Regional Military Administration reported that on the night of December 17, the russian army attacked Odesa oblast with attack drones. A man was killed. One of the attacked drones fell on a private house and exploded. Dozens of houses in the area were damaged. The Air Armed Forces destroyed nine Shahed-136 UAVs.
Roman Mrochko, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that an 81-year-old man died in Kherson after another shelling of the city centre. His body was found this morning.
In the morning of December 17, the russian army shelled Dariivka in Kherson oblast. Six police officers were injured.
During a nighttime drone attack by the russian military in Kherson oblast on December 16, air defence units destroyed seven russian kamikaze drones.
On December 16, towards Kherson the Armed Forces of the South destroyed two Grad multiple rocket launchers, 12 cannons, a mortar, a boat, an electronic warfare station, an APE-5 command and control vehicle and 14 russian armoured vehicles and eliminated 79 russian soldiers.
On December 16, the russian military fired 96 times at Kherson oblast using various types of weapons. They hit residential areas of the region’s settlements, an administrative building, an educational institution, an enterprise and the territory of a park in Kherson. There were no casualties.
In Kherson community, 46 shelters were repaired. Another three are undergoing major repairs. Work is currently underway on 25 simple shelters. It cost UAH 145 million.
The Support Kherson Charitable Foundation has launched a New Year’s project – the SUPPORTDyvo chatbot. It allows you to register a child from Kherson oblast for a gift or make a surprise for him or her. The bot currently has about five thousand applications from children.
Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
On December 19, 2023, the Forum of Volunteer Initiatives will be held in Lutsk. Participants will be able to visit the avenue of volunteer initiatives, meet volunteers and attend master classes on topics related to assistance to the Armed Forces and civil security.
The humanitarian aid center Owl’s Nest issued aid to IDPs thanks to the Hungarian Ecumenical Aid Service, PPDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V. and other benefactors, namely 21 packages with necessary items for children under 1 year old, 330 packages with food and hygiene kits, clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,6K units).
UAH 130 mln was allocated in December for the payment of IDPs living in Prykarpattia. It related a monthly state housing allowance of UAH 3K for disabled persons and children and UAH 2K for all other IDPs.
During her visit to the oblast, Olena Zelenska, First Lady of Ukraine, visited Lviv Medical College of Postgraduate Education. This is the only institution in Ukraine that is engaged in postgraduate education of nurses and pharmacists. Every year, 5K nurses, paramedics, midwives and pharmacists undergo additional training here. The First Lady noted that the team of the institution applies European best practices and at the same time is involved in volunteer activity, strengthening the psychological stability of medical workers.
Lviv oblast is developing a system of rehabilitation assistance. As of today, 13 medical institutions of the oblast provide rehabilitation assistance to soldiers and veterans on an inpatient basis, and another 33 – on an outpatient basis.
Two master classes were held for local and IDP children in the Pomornian library in Zolochiv region. Artist Halyna Kurylo taught how to paint tins for trench candles, and psychologist Nataliia Velikanych from the Maltese Aid Service conducted training on psychological self-help during the war. Experts say that such events have a very good effect on children’s mental health.
A state award was presented to the family of the deceased defender from Zolochiv region. Senior soldier Oleh Hrytsaichuk was posthumously awarded with the III degree Order “For Courage”. The hero served as a senior soldier in the grenade launcher division of the fire support platoon of the mountain assault company. He died on May 12, 2023 in Kyiv City Hospital #1 from gunshot and shrapnel wounds as a result of rocket and artillery shelling by russian military formations in the area of Khromov settlement, Donetsk oblast. The soldier is survived by his son, daughter, wife and parents.
A teacher from the village of Kidry received the Honoured Teacher of Ukraine award from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Serhii Badyha is a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and is undergoing rehabilitation after being wounded. But before the war, he worked as a teacher at Kidrivsky Lyceum of the Canonical community, Varas region.
337 Ternopil residents will receive compensation for housing IDPs. From December 1 to 5, the Center for the Provision of Administrative Services continued accepting documents for obtaining compensation for expenses incurred for the temporary accommodation of IDPs in the previous month. By the way, in Ternopil, from March 2022 to November 2023, compensation for the temporary accommodation of IDPs was awarded to a total of 9 768 homeowners for the total amount of almost UAH 14,2 mln.
At night, during the air alarm signal, the air defense forces shot 2 Shahed UAVs within the oblast. Debris from one of them damaged a private house, as a result of which the roof of the house caught fire. There was no information about casualties.
The RMA reports that Volodymyr Moshkola, military serviceman from Chernivtsi oblast, was awarded the Golden Cross badge.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Lithuania sent another batch of military aid to Ukraine, including millions of cartridges and thousands of shells for short-range portable anti-tank grenade launchers, as well as about a thousand folding beds. Lithuania also actively trains Ukrainian servicemen, provides medical treatment and rehabilitation, expert consultations, and allocates funds to international funds for Ukraine.
By the end of the year, the second German-made Patriot air defense system will be deployed in Ukraine. Soldiers work with the Patriot received proper training at the beginning of December.
