War in Ukraine today: latest news, April 16, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 417th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:

The russian federation continues to wage a war of aggression, completely disregarding international humanitarian law, continuing to strike at the territory of Ukraine with anti-aircraft guided missiles, and shelling non-military targets.

The enemy launched 25 missile strikes from S-300 air defense systems at the peaceful cities of Zaporizhzhia, Komyshuvakha in Zaporizhzhia oblast and Snihurivka in Mykolaiv oblast, as well as 28 air strikes. There were 4 MLRS attacks at the positions of our troops and civilian infrastructure of the settlements. Civilians have been killed and injured, and multi-storey and private residential buildings, civilian educational institutions, hospitals, churches and other civilian infrastructure destroyed and damaged.

The russian aggressor continues to use terror tactics, and there is still a high threat of missile and air strikes throughout Ukraine.

The enemy suffers considerable losses, but does not abandon its plans to occupy our territory. It continues to focus its main efforts on conducting offensive operations towards Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Marinka. It actively uses tactical and army aviation in these areas. Bakhmut and Marinka remain at the epicenter of the fighting. During the day, our defenders repelled more than 45 enemy attacks in the above-mentioned frontline areas.

No signs of enemy offensive groups were detected towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk and Sloboda. A comprehensive inspection of the combat readiness of the armed forces of the republic of belarus is underway. Some units of the territorial troops of the armed forces of the russian federation continue to be stationed in this country.

In the areas bordering Ukraine, certain enemy units are held in Bryansk, Kursk and Belgorod oblasts.

During the day, the enemy fired at Svesa, Buniakyne, Iskryskivshchyna, Shpil, Volfyne, Yunakivka, Basivka in Sumy oblast, as well as Veterynarne, Neskuchne, Vovchansk, Bochkove, Mala Vovcha and Zemlianky in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy fired at Novomlynsk, Dvorichna, Zakhidne and Kindrashivka in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Lyman, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the area north of Hryhorivka and near Spirne. Stelmakhivka, Nevske, Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Ivanivka and Spirne in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

The enemy continues to conduct offensive actions towards Bakhmut.

Fighting for the city of Bakhmut continues. The enemy conducted attacks in the vicinity of Khromove and Ivanivske, but did not succeed. Vasiukivka, Minkivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Novodmytrivka and Pivnichne in Donetsk oblast were affected by hostile shelling.

Towards  Avdiivka, the enemy conducted offensive actions in the areas of Novokalynove, Sieverne, Vodiane and Pervomaiske in Donetsk oblast, but did not succeed. They shelled over 15 settlements near the contact line. These include Novokalynove, Avdiivka, Vodiane, Pervomaiske and Netailove in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Maryinka, our defenders repelled numerous enemy attacks in the vicinity of Mariinka. At the same time, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, Heorhiivka, Maksymilianivka, Pobieda and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk oblast were shelled by the enemy.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy did not conduct any offensive actions yesterday. Settlements of Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Velyka Novosilka, Vremivka in Donetsk oblast were shelled.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy continues to conduct defensive actions. Vremivka and Novopil in Donetsk oblast; Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia oblast; Dudchany, Beryslav, Vesele, Burhunka, Bilozirka, Dniprovske in Kherson oblast, as well as the city of Kherson were shelled.

russian occupation forces continue to suffer heavy losses. All medical facilities on the temporarily occupied territory are overcrowded with wounded invaders. As a result, the enemy uses civilian educational institutions in the temporarily occupied territories for its own purposes. For example, in the village of Vysoke, Zaporizhzhia oblast, the occupiers converted the gym of a local school into a military hospital. Medical services are provided exclusively to russian military personnel. As of April 15, about 100 russian occupiers with injuries of varying severity were being treated.

russian invaders continue to rob civilians in Ukraine, appropriating the grain harvest. For example, in the city of Berdiansk, Zaporizhzhia oblast, the so-called russian occupation ‘authorities’ are trying to take away stolen corn by loading it onto barges.

The russian occupiers continue forced passportization of residents in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine. In particular, in the village of Tavriia, Kherson oblast, the invaders are conducting house-to-house visits to local residents to check for russian passports. Citizens of Ukraine who have not received a russian passport have been informed that if they do not obtain the documents by June 1, they will be deported with all their personal property confiscated.

Aviation of the Defense Forces conducted 5 strikes on buildups of enemy personnel and the anti-aircraft missile system.

Our defenders shot down 4 enemy UAVs (2 of the Orlan-10 type, 1 reconnaissance Eleron and 1 Lancet kamikaze drone).

Rocket and artillery units struck a control center, an anti-aircraft missile system, an enemy buildup of manpower, weapons and military equipment, a fuel and lubricant depot and 2 enemy ammunition depots.

Oleksii Reznikov, Defense Minister of Ukraine, states that Ukraine lost fewer military personnel than the number of people killed in the earthquake in Turkey. “This means that our main goal is to save the lives of our soldiers, while russia uses them as cannon fodder. This is a meat grinder tactic. They don’t care. In Bakhmut alone, russia is losing 500 people killed and wounded every day,” he said.

Energoatom reports that russians started taking children from Enerhodar to Crimea. The so-called ‘evacuation’ will last until April 20.
