War in Ukraine today: latest news, 28 July, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 886th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 16 pm:   

On 28 July, russian invaders continued to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are thwarting the enemy’s insidious plans, causing them significant losses in personnel and equipment.

Thave were 73 combat engagements, most intense towards Pokrovsk.

Border settlements in Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts continued to suffer from cynical shelling from the territory of the russian federation. Artillery and mortar fire damaged Ulanove, Basivka, Yunakivka, Sadky, Velyka Pysarivka, Karpovychi, Mykolaivka, Ponomarenky, Bachivsk, and Popivka.

Kharkiv region is under constant bombardment by enemy aviation. From russian cities Belgorod and Shebekino, the russians carried out two airstrikes using six KABs, targeting the area of Vovchansk. The enemy also launched a missile strike with two Kh-35U anti-ship missiles on Kharkiv.

Moreover, towards Kharkiv, the russians carried out three attacks near Hlyboke and Vovchansk, where one clash is currently ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy launched an assault near Novosynove. The battle continues. The occupiers also bombarded Petroplavlivka, Tabaivka, and Bohuslavka with five KABs.

Towards Lyman, the invaders’ army attacked Ukrainian positions 12 times near the settlements of Makiivka, Novoserhiivka, Nevske, Terny, Novosadove, and Torske. Ukrainian defenders repelled five enemy attacks, while seven are still ongoing.

Towards Siversk, the enemy attacked five times in the vicinity of Spirne and Ivanodarivka throughout the day. The clashes resulted in the enemy’s defeat.

Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy carried out six assaults in the vicinity of Vasiukivka, Hryhorivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, and Klishchiivka. The Defense Forces repelled half of the attacks, while three clashes continue.

Towards Toretsk, the occupiers attacked nine times Zalizne, Niu-York, Toretsk, and Pivnichne. Six battles ended, and three continue. Additionally, the invaders carried out nine airstrikes on Toretsk, Shcherbynivka, and Niu-York.

Towards Pokrovsk, the russians carried out assaults in the vicinity of Tymofiivka, Vozdvyzhenka, Novooleksandrivka, Zelene Pole, Kalynove, Ivanivka, Prohres, Zhelanne, Serhiivka, Novoselivka Persha, and Yasnobrodivka. The Defense Forces were holding back the enemy’s pressure and repelled 16 attacks, with 12 clashes ongoing. The enemy also carried out six airstrikes on Zhelanne, Ivanivka, and Novoekonomichne.

Towards Kurakhove, russian forces attacked four times in the vicinity of Krasnohorivka and Heorhiivka. Three battles ended, while one continues.

Towards Vremivka, two russian attacks near Kostyantynivka are still ongoing. Additionally, the occupiers bombarded the vicinity of Vodyane with KABs.

Towards Huliaipole, the enemy stormed Ukrainian defenders’ positions near the settlement of Huliaipole. The battle is still ongoing.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy was unsuccessful in two attacks on Ukrainian defense lines near Mala Tokmachka and Novoandriivka. Additionally, the russians launched over 50 unguided air rockets against Lobkove and Kamianske.

In other directions of the front, the situation did not significantly change.


The Ministry of Defense reported that on July 27 alone, russia attacked 145 infrastructure facilities in Ukraine. In total, russia shelled 11 regions.

Andrii Cherniak, representative of the Main Intelligence Directorate, reported that during the latest air attacks on Ukrainian territory, russia used drones of an unknown type made of plywood and foam. These drones do not carry explosives but closely resemble Shahed drones and fly in groups with them.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces reports that at 4pm, six guided bombs  were launched in the vicinity of Vovchanske, there were airstrikes against Petropavlivka, Tabaievka and Bohuslavka.

Oleh Siniehubov, Head of the RMA, says that the Russians carried out two missile strikes on Kharkiv. There are no deaths or injuries as a result of missile strikes. One of the transport companies of Slobodskyi district was hit. Previously, missiles of the type X/X-35/X-59 were used for strikes. Now there are explosives technicians, forensic experts, prosecutors and investigators on the scene.

Police reports that in the morning, the russian military carried out strikes on Siminivka, Vovchansk community and Stetski of Velika Burlutska community.

At 05:40am the village of Boguslavka, Iziumregion was shelled. As a result of the shelling, 1 agricultural base was damaged . 

At 22:30pm, the village of Malinivka, Chuhuiv region was shelled. As a result of the shelling, the production building was partially destroyed.

At 5:10pm, Moskalivka, Chuhuiev region was shelled. As a result of the shelling, 4 houses, farm buildings, and a car were damaged. A 71-year-old woman died.

At 5:25pm Kruhliakovka village, Kupniansk region was affected. As a result of the shelling, a private house was destroyed. A 54-year-old man was injured and is in a serious condition.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy continued offensive (assault) actions, in total there were nine combat clashes. The fighting took place in the vicinity of Hlyboke, Tikhe and Vovchansk Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the number of combat clashes was three. The defense forces repelled enemy attacks in the vicinity of Sinkivka.

Donetsk oblast

Dmitro Kozhubenko, fighter of the brigade “Rubizh”, reports that there is active fighting towards Lyman. The russians are storming the positions of the Defense Forces day and night, reinforcing units and adding heavy losses to the mobilized occupiers.  

The investigation of the explosion in Olenivka colony on the night of July 28-29, 2022 is ongoing, the suspicion was not announced. It was said in response to a request from the Office of the Prosecutor General. At that time, at least 50 were killed and at least 140 Ukrainian servicemen were wounded, who were being held captive in the colony in the occupied territory. 

Serhii Horbunov, Head of the CMA  and Olena Rudenko, Director of the hospital, reporta that the number of people injured in the attack on Konstantinivka on July 27 increased to three. A 29-year-old man came to the hospital with shrapnel wounds.

Yurii Tretiak, Head of the CMA, says that in the morning, the russian army struck Mirnohrad in Donetsk oblast. An air bomb was probably dropped on the city. 24 houses and two cars were damaged. There are no casualties reported.

Anastasia Medviedieva, Spokeswoman of the prosecutor’s office of Donetsk oblast, says that in the afternoon, russian troops attacked Lyman, preceded by KAB-250 aerial bombs. There is no information about the dead or injured.

Operational situation in the region as of the morning of July 28:

Pokrovsk region. Kurakhove came under fire 4 times – wounded 4 people, destroyed the administrative building, damaged one and a half dozen multi-storey buildings and several infrastructure facilities. A child was injured in Mirnohrad.

Kramatorsk region. In Lima, 2 people were injured, 2 houses were destroyed, 10 houses and infrastructure were damaged; Also in Ridkoduba, a person was injured, 3 houses and an administrative building were damaged, 7 houses were destroyed in Zarichne. One person was injured in Zoria, Illinivka community, 5 facilities were damaged. In Kostiantynivka, 1 person was killed and 2 wounded, 2 houses were damaged, 4 non-residential premises were damaged.

Bakhmut region. In Chasiv Yar community, 1 person was injured, 2 private houses, 2 multi-storey buildings and infrastructure were damaged. In Toretsk, 1 person was killed and 1 wounded, 2 houses were damaged. In Siversk, 2 houses were damaged, another – in Serebrianka.

Vadim Filashkin, Head of the regional administration, informs that the russians shelled the settlements of Donetsk oblast 23 times during the day and killed 5 residents: 3 in Ivanivka, 1 in Konstiantynivka and Toretsk. Another 15 people in the oblast were wounded.

Luhansk oblast

Nevske and Makiivka were attacked. No positions on this part of the front were lost. The russians fired artillery and used a large number of drones, in Nevske – 80, and in Makiyivka – 98.

514 residential premises of those who evacuated outside the occupied territory were “seized” in the so-called “luhansk republic”. This is provided by the procedure of “nationalization”, which begins after the completion of 30 days from the date of detection. 

Residents of the occupied Luhansk oblast were forced to obtain a policy of compulsory medical insurance. It is possible to issue it only if they have a russian passport. Medical workers are forbidden to accept patients who do not have this paper for insurance. However, when the case is not limited to the reception of a therapist or a narrow specialist, but, for example, it is necessary to be treated in a hospital, it turns out that the insurance does not operate on the territory of the so-called lpr and the residents have to pay for medical services and medicines.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Ministry of Health announced that the modern building of the National Children’s Specialised Hospital ‘Okhmatdyt’, damaged by a missile attack by russia on 8 July, will be restored by the end of autumn. A new building will be erected on the site of the destroyed hospital buildings by the end of 2026 to expand the scope of medical care for children from all over Ukraine. According to the Ministry of Health, the damage to Okhmatdyt after the russian missile attack is estimated at over UAH 830m.

The RMA reported that work is underway to expand the network of offices supporting small and microbusinesses called Made in Ukraine. The first office in Kyiv oblast was opened in Obukhiv. In this office, entrepreneurs can get information, advice and assistance in paperwork, writing business plans, applying for grants and other support programmes.

In Kyiv oblast, 53 applications were approved for grants for veterans and their families to start or develop their own businesses under the Made in Ukraine project since the beginning of the year. The total amount paid is almost UAH 24.9m. This initiative will create 101 new jobs.

In Irpin community, 3,770 families received money to rebuild their homes that were damaged or destroyed during the full-scale invasion. The funds were allocated under the eRestoration programme.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the regional military administration, announced that over the past year, thanks to international partners, more than 29,000 windows have been installed in Kyiv oblast in buildings damaged by the russians. The work was carried out as part of the programme of the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM), USA in partnership with The Howard G. Buffett Foundation (HGBF). The amount of assistance has already reached over $3m. The amount of assistance has already reached over $3m. The GEM has already installed windows in 70 settlements of Kyiv oblast, and work is still underway in 11.

On 26 July, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard and Tana Sribna held a Women’s Circle meeting in Kyiv to provide psychological and emotional support to women during the war. The meeting was held in Kyiv, at Vcentri Hub: Shevchenkivskyi. The next meeting will take place on 1 August at the Lesya Ukrainka Public Library in Kyiv. Its topic is ‘Analysis of ornaments for women’s embroidered shirts’.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine reported  that on 29 July, the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War will host a large-scale event in Kyiv to mark the anniversary of the tragic events in Olenivka, Donetsk Oblast. Two years ago, an explosion occurred in the barracks of a penal colony in Olenivka, killing 53 prisoners of war from the Azov regiment and injuring more than 130.

Zhytomyr oblast

Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University presented 6 technology startups developed under the BGV Hardware Accelerator acceleration programme. A total of 35 teams from all over Ukraine applied. The projects included a broadband antenna for radio monitoring that will help the military in the fight against russian drones; a ground-based motorised unmanned aerial vehicle designed for reconnaissance, search and rescue, repair, and combat operations; and individual sports and rehabilitation equipment for sports academies, sections, and rehabilitation centres.

In Zhytomyr, the Zhytomyr-Ovruch Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine signed documents on the acceptance of the religious community of Krasnopil village, headed by its rector, Archpriest Mikhail Shukost, into the diocese. After a general meeting, the religious community, together with the rector, made a unanimous decision to withdraw from subordination to the moscow Patriarchate. 

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that a child died as a result of russian shelling of Hlukhiv on 27 July. It was a 14-year-old boy who was wounded. In total, 13 civilians, including 7 children, were wounded in the shelling of the centre of Hlukhiv.

According to the RMA, at night and in the morning of 28 July, the russian military fired 17 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. 

There were 61 explosions, including artillery and mortar attacks and the use of FPV drones. Yunakiva, Miropillia, Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Vorozhba and Velyka Pysarivka communities were shelled.

It is reported that russians fired 21 times at Sumy oblast, resulting in 92 explosions. According to the regional military administration, 10 border communities were shelled.

Bilopillia community: the enemy fired from mortars (5 explosions), artillery (8 explosions), and MLRS (6 explosions).

Krasnopilia community: 3 FPV drones fired from the territory of the russian federation (3 explosions).

Esman community: 9 mines dropped by russians.

Yunakivka community: shelling with the use of FPV drones (6 explosions), shelling with MLRS (4 explosions) were recorded.

Miropillia community: 8 MLRS launched from an enemy helicopter (8 explosions).

Hlukhiv community: the enemy attacked with Grad MLRSs (12 explosions). As a result, 1 child (14 years old) was killed; 13 civilians, including 7 children, injured.

Shalyhyne community:  2 mines dropped and an FPV drone used (1 explosion).

Velyka Pysarivka community: mortar shelling (13 explosions) and shelling from an automatic grenade launcher (4 explosions).

Nova Sloboda community: mortar shelling (13 explosions) and explosives dropped from an enemy UAV (2 explosions).

Seredyna-Buda community: an explosive object dropped from an enemy UAV (1 explosion).

Olena Sima, Head of the Yunakivka community,  reported that a residential building and a car were damaged, and dry grass caught fire as a result of the shelling of Yunakivka on 27 July. The State Emergency Service responded promptly and managed to extinguish the fire.

On 27 July, at 14:30, the russian army struck Bilopillia, hitting the centre and outskirts of the town with Grad rocket launchers. According to Yurii Zarko, Head of Bilopillia community, there was damage, but no casualties reported.

A veteran from Sumy oblast won medals at the Invictus Germany festival in Dusseldorf, Germany. Nikolay Zaritsky from Bilopillia won a gold medal in rowing on a training simulator. 

Chernihiv oblast

Over the past day, russian troops attacked the border of Chernihiv oblast with FPV drones and mortars, resulting in 44 explosions. 

According to the SBGSU, three communities were under enemy fire.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community: 6 attacks with mortars and FPV drones in the area of Hremyach and Krasny Khutir.

Semenivka community: 18 attacks with mortars and FPV drones in the area of Prohres, Karpovychi and Mykolaivka.

Snovsk community: 20 mortar attacks in the area of Yedine and Klyusy.

On 27 July, two medical workers from Chernihiv oblast received the Order of St Panteleimon for their professionalism and mercy. The annual award ceremony took place in Kyiv. Larysa Boyar, head of the therapeutic department at Chernihiv Central District Hospital, was recognised in the Civilian Medic category. Taras Voitkiv, head of the medical unit of the mechanised battalion of the 1st Separate Tank Siverskaya Brigade, who has been a combatant since 2018, was awarded in the Military Medic category.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, announced that in the evening, the occupiers struck Nikopol region with artillery and kamikaze drones. They targeted Myrove and Marhanets communities, damaging a greenhouse. In the morning, kamikaze drones were directed at Nikopol. A private house was hit.

The enemy does not stop terrorising the civilian population of Nikopol. In the morning, 8 people were injured in the regional centre due to shelling. Among them are 2 children, a 1-year-old girl and a 10-year-old girl. Three men and the same number of women aged between 22 and 75 were also injured. In total, there were over 10 attacks in the region. The occupiers used kamikaze drones and artillery in communities of Nikopol, Pokrovske, Myrove and Marhanets. 13 high-rise buildings were damaged, a car and 3 minibuses were destroyed, a bread stand, an administrative building, a private enterprise, infrastructure, 2 cars, power lines and gas pipelines were affected. Zelenodolsk community was attacked by the enemy with drones.  A gas station was damaged. A fire broke out in a garage and an abandoned house.

A rally in support of prisoners of war was held on the central square of Dnipro. Hundreds of people joined, including wives, mothers, sisters of prisoners of war and caring people from Dnipro.

Vinnytsia oblast

In one week, from 22 to 28 July, it became known about the death of 27 defenders from Vinnytsia.

Kirovohrad oblast

2 years ago, on the night of 29 July, an explosion rang out in colony №120, Olenivka village in the occupied territory of Donetsk oblast, where the russian federation held Ukrainian prisoners. Among the killed were Bohdan Khomovskyi and Yaroslav Otrok, soldiers from Kirovohrad oblast.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, the Victory of the Unconquered inclusive competition took place for the 1st time. Veterans and servicemen competed in four disciplines.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 27 July, the occupiers launched 386 strikes on 10 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were 11 airstrikes on Kamianske, Piatykhatky, Huliaipole, Levadne, Mala Tokmachka, and Malynivka. A total of 175 UAVs of various modifications attacked Bilenke, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Malynivka and Uspenivka. Besides, 12 MLRS strikes hit Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Novoandriivka, and Levadne. There were 188 artillery attacks at Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Malynivka, and Levadne. 34 residential buildings and infrastructure objects were damaged.

The General Staff reported that towards Orikhiv, there were four clashes in the vicinity of Mala Tokmachka and Novoandriivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

At 05:34am, the enemy carried out an artillery strike on an open area in Kutsurub community, damaging to a power line.

On 27 July, the enemy attacked Kutsurub community three times using FPV drones. One of the strikes damaged a private house in the village of Dniprovske. A grass fire broke out in another location, which was promptly extinguished by firefighters. In the morning, the enemy shelled the waters of Ochakiv community with artillery.

Odesa oblast

During the night of 28 July, 2024, the enemy launched an attack with an X-59 guided missile from the airspace over the Black Sea and eight Shahed attack drones from Cape Chauda (temporarily occupied territory of Ukrainian Crimea). The missile and seven Shahed-131/136 drones were shot down. Nearly all air targets were destroyed in Odesa oblast.

There is one enemy ship equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles in the Black Sea, with a total salvo capacity of up to four missiles. There are no enemy ships in the Sea of Azov.

Kherson oblast

From early morning, russian forces had been striking Kherson oblast. The enemy shelled the village of Komyshany. Five people were injured, including three children. A 65-year-old woman suffered blast trauma and a concussion in the village of Pryozerne. A resident in Kindiika, who was outside, was injured as a result of the shelling. The 76-year-old man was diagnosed with blast trauma, and injuries to his head, forearm, and leg.

Yesterday, russian forces continued shelling the right-bank part of  Kherson oblast with artillery and MLRSs. Also the enemy used UAVs and aviation to attack civilian infrastructure. Kherson, Antonivka, Sadove, Bilozerka, Dniprovske, Inzhenerne, Beryslav, Burhunka, Bruskinske, Novoberyslav, and Novoraisk were under enemy fire. 11 private houses, five apartment buildings, two educational institutions, nine vehicles, and a gas pipeline were damaged. Four people were killed and another four injured.

A 44-year-old resident stepped on an anti-personnel mine near the river in Bobrovyi Kut. He was taken to the hospital with partial amputation of his lower limb and shrapnel wounds. Two men in Muzykivka attempted to cut open an unknown explosive device, which detonated. As a result, a 53-year-old man suffered severe injuries and was hospitalised, while his 64-year-old companion died at the scene.

Daily counter-battery fights and repulsion of enemy assaults continue in the operational zone of the Southern Defense Forces. Yesterday, the occupiers conducted three assaults on the left bank of the Dnipro River in the vicinity of Krynky.

The Southern Defense Forces continue to inflict fire damage on enemy locations, firing positions and rear areas. Over the past day, Ukrainian defenders eliminated 115 occupiers and destroyed 28 units of weapons and military equipment. Additionally, three field ammunition storage buildups, one fuel and lubricant storage site, one UAV control point, five bunkers, one command and observation post, three generators, and one observation post were destroyed.

Volunteer medics from the CASERS public organisation continue to provide essential assistance to the residents of Kherson oblast. This week, a neurologist worked in Tiahynka community, offering consultations and necessary medications for free.

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent 10 units of multi-channel fast charging Bandera Power 225S and a thermal imaging sight ATN MARS LTV to the Military Unit А 0959 thanks to the budget funds.

Zakarpattia oblast

Severe fractures and bone lesions of war victims are treated by the method of metal osteosynthesis in one of the medical institutions of the regional centre. As of today, Uzhhorod medics have installed 488 implants for 460 military personnel. Complex operations and treatment are carried out within the framework of the pilot project of the Ministry of Health and international partners.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

2 families of fallen Heroes and their children went to the Carpathians for a vacation. As part of the Care for the Hero’s Family project, during the week, four children of fallen defenders and their mothers will have the opportunity to recover and rest in a picturesque area, the beauty of which makes you forget about everything. Families will be hosted by the Phoenix Relax Park hotel in Bukovel, which will provide comfortable accommodation, quality food, and an interesting leisure program.

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 30 FPVs for the military of the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade thanks to the budget funds.

Lviv oblast

The oblast provided 350 kamikaze drones to military personnel as part of the Birds of Victory project. Since the start of the project, 9,326 drones have been sent to the front line.

26 servicemen from Lviv oblast were awarded state honours (posthumously). The soldiers were awarded medals and orders of honour for selfless performance of military duty in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine. Awards were presented to the families of fallen defenders.

Rivne oblast

Stepan Yeremenko, Head of the Canine Platoon Group of the National Guard of Ukraine, was awarded with the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously). He was killed during an airstrike on 11 May, 2022 while performing a combat mission at ​​the Azovstal metallurgical plant.

Ternopil oblast

40 children of fallen servicemen from Ternopil oblast went on vacation to the Lithuanian city of Kaltanenia thanks to Ternopil RMA, the Honorary Consulate of Lithuania in Ternopil and the Embassy of Lithuania in Ukraine.

18 Ternopil military personnel will receive financial assistance in the amount of UAH 10,000 for treatment and rehabilitation. Since the beginning of the year, 101 soldiers from Ternopil community have already received financial assistance.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that the community allocated financial aid to 12 families of fallen soldiers in the amount of over UAH 300,000.

Khmelnytskyi community sent 300 FPV drones worth UAH 4.4m to the Defense Forces from the budget funds.

Chernivtsi oblast

Travel therapy continues for defenders undergoing rehabilitation in Bukovina. 2 groups of soldiers have already joined the excursion tour in Bukovina. They visited museums, admired mountain landscapes, took part in master classes, and visited local enterprises. Excursion tours and easy mountain routes through the Pokut-Bukovyn Carpathians for defenders will continue until the end of summer.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

UNITED24 raised over $500,000 in a project with LEGO creators. 8 constructors were presented, dedicated to architectural monuments — objects of cultural heritage of Ukraine. On the closing day of the gathering, the platform presented a model of Khan Palace to Nariman Jelyal, released from russian captivity. Funds collected from the drawing of the 1st drop of constructors were directed to the direction Rebuilding Ukraine and to the reconstruction of the Veliko Kostroma Gymnasium in Dnipropetrovsk oblast.

Rustem Umerov, Minister of Defense of Ukraine, announced that NATO will assist in building 5 rehabilitation in Ukraine. The rehabilitation system will help servicemen return to service after injuries and illnesses. It will include a military mental rehabilitation program.
