War in Ukraine today: latest news, 29 July, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 887h day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy continues active offensive actions, trying to break through our troops’ defences. They are focusing their efforts towards Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. The Defence Forces are responding fiercely to any enemy activity. 

Since the beginning of the day, there have been 99 combat engagements.

Kharkiv oblast is under enemy air strikes. The terrorists dropped 18 KABs, targeting the areas of Starytsia, Lozova, Vovchanski Khutory, Mali Prokhody, Izbytske, and Prykolodne. Additionally, towards Kharkiv, russian occupiers stormed the positions of the Ukrainian army four times in the areas of Hlyboke and Vovchansk, suffering losses and retreating.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy launched three active assaults on our units’ positions near Stelmakhivka and Pishchane, bombarding the areas of Kupiansk and Petroplavlivka. Ukrainian soldiers continue to hold the defence steadfastly.

Towards Lyman, the invaders’ army attacked Ukrainian positions eight times near Nevske, Makiivka, and Terny. Six clashes ended unsuccessfully for the enemy, with two ongoing.

The enemy is also active Towards Siversk. Near the settlements of Ivanodarivka, Spirne, and Pereizne, the defenders of Ukrainian land repelled two attacks, and four enemy attempts to advance failed. The situation is under control.

Towards Kramatorsk, the occupiers launched four assaults on our troops’ positions near Chasiv Yar, Dubovo-Vasylivka, Klishchiivka, and Hryhorivka, with two of them still ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the number of enemy attacks since the beginning of the day has increased to 12, with the enemy concentrating efforts in the areas of Pivnichne, Zalizne, and Niu-York. Ukrainian soldiers repelled eight attacks, with the rest ongoing. The enemy bombarded Toretsk and nearby areas, dropping 8 KABs.

Towards Pokrovsk, as usual lately, there were the most clashes. Today, the occupiers, supported by bomber and assault aviation, made 36 attempts to push our defenders from their positions in the areas of ten different settlements. The enemy is most active near Prohres, Novooleksandrivka, Tymofiivka, and Zhelanne. The Defence Forces are holding back the pressure and have repelled 20 enemy attacks so far, with 16 battles ongoing. Enemy aviation dropped nearly two dozen guided bombs and struck with NARs near Oleksandropil and Novobakhmutivka.

Clashes occurred near Kostyantynivka, Antonivka, and Paraskoviivka towards Kurakhove, with 17 enemy attacks stopped today.

Towards Vremivka, Ukrainian soldiers repelled an enemy assault near Velyka Novosilka. There are still five battles ongoing in the areas of Kostyantynivka and Vodyane. The occupiers struck with three KABs near Katerynivka and used unguided air rockets near Novodonetske.

Towards Orikhiv, the invaders made three unsuccessful attempts to advance near Mala Tokmachka, receiving a harsh response. They launched over 50 NARs toward Kamianske and Myrne.

Towards Kherson, the enemy did not conduct offensive actions but bombarded the areas of Lviv, Tiahynka, and Novotiahynka, using seven KABs.


Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Digital Transformation, reported that in Ukraine, a robot capable of transporting two wounded at once has been launched into serial production. The Ratel N robot was developed by members of the Brave1 defence cluster. It is designed to evacuate wounded from the battlefield and can carry over 400 kg of live load, allowing it to transport multiple people at once. Thanks to its design, it can move over rough terrain, operates quietly to remain undetected by the enemy, and is equipped with night cameras to effectively perform tasks in low visibility and nighttime conditions. It can be used for various tasks: it can be equipped with electronic warfare, a mobile observation post, a combat module, or a demining setup. The system is equipped with satellite communication, allowing the operator to control it from a great distance. 

Olena Shuliak, Head of the Committee on State Power Organization, reported that a total of 3,823 convicts have already been sent from correctional facilities to the front. Currently, seven convicted women have expressed a desire to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After completing training, they will join combat units. 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

The General Staff reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine conducted 111 russian assaults in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts on 28 July. The russian army conducted 52 attacks towards Pokrovsk.

Kharkiv oblast

The State Emergency Service of Kharkiv oblast confirmed that 90 chickens and 10 ducks died as a result of a fire caused by russian shelling of Lozova village in Chuhuiv region on the afternoon of 29 July.

The Kharkiv operational-tactical group on the morning of 29 July reported that near Hlyboke, russian invaders are preparing assault groups for an offensive by replenishing supplies, trying to man up units and reconnoitring routes of advance. The enemy continues to attack the positions of the Ukrainian Defence Forces near Hlyboke and Vovchansk towards Kharkiv. They intensified aerial reconnaissance using UAVs. Near Sotnytsia Kozachok, the enemy is reinforcing combat guard posts on its own territory. In the course of rotational exercises, he replaced units near Hatyshche.

At 3:20am, russians attacked Kupiansk. According to the RMA, one private house was damaged as a result of the shelling.

Yesterday at 6pm, russians attacked Kupiansk. An FPV drone hit an open area.

At 11am, russians attacked Kharkiv. As a result of an X-35U missile attack, the building of an infrastructure facility was on fire.

At 11am, russians attacked Stetskivka village, Kupiansk region, damaging 4 private houses.

At 10:20am, russians attacked Symynivka village, Chuhuiv region. A residential building was damaged as a result of the shelling by the KAB.

At 10am, russians attacked Stetskivka village of Velykyi Burluk community, Kupiansk region. The shelling damaged private houses and a power line.

The Kharkiv operational-tactical group said that there were six combat engagements towards Kharkiv on 28 July. The occupier launched 11 airstrikes against the positions of our troops, using 26 UAVs. They targeted Vovchansk, Hlyboke, Slobozhanske, Lyptsi, Borshchova, Vesele, Starytsia, Vovchanski Khutory. The invaders launched 46 kamikaze strikes and fired 513 times at the positions of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. Since the beginning of the day, there have been two combat engagements near Vovchansk.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked the defensive lines of our troops four times near Hlyboke and Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attacked near Novooosynove. The battle is still ongoing. The situation is under control of our troops.

Yurii Fedorenko, Commander of the Achilles UAV battalion of the 92nd Separate Mechanised Brigade, informed that it is important for russia to advance to the administrative borders of Kharkiv to take the city under fire control with cannon artillery and MRL systems. The goal of the russians is to increase the capabilities of terrorising the civilian population.

Donetsk oblast

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, at least 3 people were killed and 3 injured in the morning shelling of Toretsk, one person is in critical condition.

One person was also killed in Hrodivka.

Yesterday the police recorded 2,952 enemy attacks on the frontline and residential areas. 9 settlements were under attack: Lyman, Myrnohrad, Toretsk, Hrodivka, Zoria, Katerynivka, Mykolaivka, Novyi Komar and Novoukrainka.

48 civilian objects were damaged, including 35 residential buildings, shops, outbuildings, garages, cars, a gas pipeline and power lines.

In Toretsk, russians dropped 10 KAB-250 bombs and shelled the city by artillery. Two civilians were injured, and at least 4 apartment buildings and 2 shops damaged.

In Katerynivka, an artillery shell injured a man and damaged a private house.

The occupiers hit Myrnohrad using an UMBP D30 SN bomb, damaging 24 private houses and 2 civilian cars.

Lyman was attacked by a KAB-250 bomb, damaging garages and a civilian car.

Also russian troops shelled Zoria by artillery, damaging a private house and a car, and disrupting communications.

In Novyi Komar village, a drone strike damaged a private house and three outbuildings.

The Migration Service of Donetsk oblast reported that since the beginning of the year, 127 passports of a citizen of Ukraine in the form of a card and 237 foreign passports have been sent by Donetsk oblast migration officers to their owners abroad.

Luhansk oblast

The RMA reported that the occupiers continued to shell Nevske and neighbouring Makiivka, using cannon artillery and UAVs. Makiivka was also hit by multiple launch rocket systems. The invaders are trying to attack these two villages every day.

Yesterday a 49-year-old woman from Nevske was evacuated to Kharkiv oblast. She is now safe and has a place to live. Krasnorichensk military administration is dealing with her needs.

In Rubizhne or Sievierodonetsk, locals can get access to mobile communications, which is officially banned by the russians in frontline cities, for a certain amount of money, but in Lysychansk, the control is stricter. There, if you try to use the coverage, you are taken “to the basement”.

The occupiers have not repaired the centralised water supply in Lysychansk in two years. They promised to do so several times. Now they claim to have repaired 500m of water pipes out of 13km of destroyed ones.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, Moriyama Masahito, visited Nemishayeve Vocational College during his visit to Kyiv oblast. As part of the Grant Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the institution received agricultural and construction equipment and 50 laptops. In addition, the foreign delegation visited Bucha and Irpin, where they saw the consequences of russia’s military aggression against Ukraine and the results of the reconstruction.

German volunteers have brought humanitarian aid to the Okhmatdyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv. In particular, it will be used by the intensive care unit, purulent surgery and onco-haematology departments. During the russian missile attack on 8 July, some of the buildings of the Okhmatdyt were destroyed and damaged. The shelling of the capital killed 33 people and injured more than a hundred.

Anatolii Fedorchuk, Mayor of Bucha, held a conversation with Korean companies that intend to locate their production and warehouse facilities in our Bucha Techno Garden industrial park. So far, more than 50 Korean companies have expressed interest in investing in Ukraine right now. 

Yevheniia Antoniuk, Head of the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions at the Irpin City Council, announced a special screensaver “Olenivka. They were killed because they could not win on the battlefield” was placed on the information touchscreen terminal near Irpin City Library. The screensaver was placed to honour the fallen heroes in Olenivka.

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr oblast, the Day Centre for Solving Social and Psychological Problems of War Veterans and Family Members of Fallen Defenders of Ukraine was established by the Veteran’s House NGO in cooperation with Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration. The Centre for Assistance to Combatants and Their Families provides legal and psychological counselling, and implements measures for affected persons in accordance with the relevant programmes approved by the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine. The Centre also provides social services, creative workshops and psychological support groups, psychological training, workshops, seminars and lectures. 

Sumy oblast

The russians fired 21 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. 72 explosions were recorded. 

The enemy attacked Velyka Pysarivka community with mortars (6 explosions) and FPV drones (2 explosions) and AGS (6 explosions). 

Yunakivka community was shelled with FPV drones (6 explosions) and artillery shelling from self-propelled artillery systems (4 explosions). 

FPV drone attacks (6 explosions), artillery shelling (16 explosions), and mortar shelling (5 explosions) were recorded in Bilopillia community.    

In Esman community, russians fired mortars (4 explosions).   

An unidentified explosive device was dropped from a hostile quadcopter-type UAV in Richky community (1 explosion).

Khotyn community was subjected to mortar fire (2 explosions) and 1 hostile helicopter launched NAR missiles (4 explosions).

In Seredyna-Buda community, a shelling with the use of 6 FPV drones was recorded (6 explosions).

Shelters continue to be built in schools in Sumy oblast. Another 6 protective structures are planned to be built this year at the expense of a subvention from the state budget, this year 150 million is provided. The funds will be used to implement 6 projects, including two in Sumy community, two more in Shostka community, and one each in Buryn and Okhtyrka communities. At five sites, the relevant work is currently underway in accordance with the developed schedule and deadlines. Tender procedures will be announced for another project in the coming days.

Chernihiv oblast

Halyna Shekhovtsova, Spokeswoman of Chernihiv border guard detachment, said that the russian army attacked seven villages in two border communities in Chernihiv oblast during the day on 28 July: Novhorod-Siverskyi and Semenivka. The fire was conducted with mortars, cannon artillery, MLRS and FPV drones. In total, border guards counted 69 explosions. 

Over the past week, the enemy fired 56 times at 20 settlements in Chernihiv oblast. According to the RMA, 191 explosions were recorded. The enemy carried out 21 air strikes. Civilian infrastructure and houses were damaged. About 20 people sought medical assistance.  

Deputy Mayor of Chernihiv Viktor Herashchenko informed that separate power lines will be laid to the modular town on Volodymyra Drozda Street in Chernihiv to provide separate power supply to the residents of the town. UAH 2.5m was allocated from the city budget for this purpose.

The RMA reported that during the full-scale invasion, russians destroyed 39 school buses. Currently, philanthropists, the state and communities are helping to resolve this issue.

The commander of an anti-aircraft missile and artillery platoon with the call sign “Batiushka” reported that in Chernihiv oblast six russian drones were shot down overnight by one of the firing groups of the 119th separate terrorist defence brigade. On the night of 21 July, the Shahed-136 strike UAVs moved in three pairs from different directions.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

At night, the defenders of the sky shot down 6 enemy drones over the oblast. 5 Shahed and 1 reconnaissance drone.

The occupiers shelled Nikopol region twice more using artillery. They hit Marhanets and Chervonohryhorivka communities. They launched about a dozen shells. As a result of the shelling in Chervonohryhorivka community, a private house, 3 outbuildings and 4 greenhouses were damaged. In the morning, the enemy launched kamikaze drones at Pokrovsk community.

According to updated information, a drone strike on Marhanets community damaged outbuildings. There were no casualties.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region more than a dozen times. They shelled the regional centre, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovsk and Myrove communities by artillery and kamikaze drones. An outbuilding, a fence and infrastructure were damaged. There were no casualties.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that Vinnytsia community delivered 150 FPV drones to Ukrainian reconnaissance personnel.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, reported that a Shahed-131/136 UAV was shot down in Kirovohrad oblast, preliminary, without consequences.

Poltava oblast

The families of the three fallen defenders from Kremenchuk were presented with posthumous awards – Orders “For Courage”, III class: the wife of the fallen defender, Junior Sergeant Yurii Berkelia, the wife and son of senior soldier Vitalii O. Dyshliuk and the mother of soldier Volodymyr V. Hubar.

Cherkasy oblast

Vitalii Ishchenko from Tinky village received an award from President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy – the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, III degree. Vitalii Ishchenko is the commander of a mechanised platoon of a mechanised company of the fourth mechanised battalion with the call sign “Lilei”. He is currently in hospital after being wounded in action towards Svatove. This is the defender’s second award. Earlier, he received the Silver Cross from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, 28 July, the occupiers launched 573 attacks on 10 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. One person was injured in Polohy region due to russian attacks. russian forces carried out 5 airstrikes on Kamianske and Huliaipole. 299 UAVs of various modifications attacked Bilenke, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Robotyne, Novodanilivka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. 5 MLRS attacks hit Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka and Robotyne. There were 264 artillery strikes on Prymorske, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Novodanilivka, Malynivka and Levadne. 8 reports of residential buildings and infrastructure damage were received.

The General Staff reported that the invaders made three unsuccessful attempts to advance near Mala Tokmachka towards Orikhiv. Additionally, the enemy launched over fifty unguided aerial bombs towards Kamianske and Myrne.

Today, 29 July, fragments of a russian UAV were found at the energy facilities of PJSC Zaporizhzhiaoblenerho in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The facility was not de-energized. Specialists from the State Emergency Service worked at the site where the UAV was discovered.

Mykolaiv oblast

On the morning of 28 July, the enemy attacked the city of Ochakiv with an FPV kamikaze drone. A private house and a motorcycle were damaged. There were no casualties.

A car rally and awareness event were held in Mykolaiv in support of prisoners of war and missing persons. This rally was dedicated to the 2nd anniversary of the terrorist attack in Olenivka. About 300 people and 100 cars participated in the event.

Pyrotechnicians continue demining Mykolaiv oblast with the help of mine-detection dogs. Last week, four Belgian Shepherds named Alf, Derek, Athos and Arni arrived as part of the updated canine units to survey the oblast. Canine teams have managed to survey 23.2 hectares of mined territories and discovered 123 pieces of ordnance since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. The work of these teams is focused on heavily mined areas where active fighting took place and those that were occupied.

Odesa oblast

As of the morning of 29 July, there were two enemy ships in the Black Sea, each equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total volley of up to eight missiles. There are no enemy ships in the Sea of Azov, and one enemy ship is in the Mediterranean Sea.

Over the past day, eight ships passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea and nine ships entered the Sea of Azov, serving russian interests.

On 28 July, families of captured soldiers held a rally called Don’t Be Silent! Captivity Kills in Odesa. This event is held every 2 weeks in the centre of Odesa on Derybasivska Street. During yesterday’s rally, participants honoured the memory of soldiers who were killed in the terrorist attack in occupied Olenivka in Donetsk oblast 2 years ago. After the gathering on Derybasivska Street, they marched to European Square to pay tribute to the deceased.

Kherson oblast

This afternoon, 29 July, russian forces attacked Dnipro district in the city of Kherson. A man who was in a cafe was injured due to an explosive dropped from a drone. The victim sustained an explosive injury and shrapnel wounds to his shin. A “first aid” team transported him to the hospital for medical assistance.

In the morning, russian forces shelled Kizomys. A 44-year-old man was hit, suffering from a mine-explosive injury.

Two people were killed and 11 injured, including three children, in Kherson oblast due to russian shelling. russian forces once again subjected Beryslav and Kherson regions to heavy shelling using MLRS, artillery, aviation, and drones. Explosions were heard around the clock as the occupiers attempted to destroy civilian infrastructure, targeting exclusively residential areas. Kherson, Antonivka, Prydniprovske, Mykilske, Komyshany, Shyroka Balka, Veletenske, Inzhenerne, Beryslav, Nova Kuban, Khreshchenivka, Mykhailivka and Novoberyslav were under combined enemy attacks. Shelling damaged 75 objects: 58 private and four multi-story buildings, an educational institution, a store, a critical infrastructure facility, six vehicles, and four garages.

Later, Kherson Regional Military Administration reported 3 more casualties from yesterday’s shelling. A resident of Komyshany received explosive and traumatic brain injuries, as well as a concussion. A Kherson resident was diagnosed with an explosive injury and shrapnel wounds to her shin, and a 38-year-old Kherson man sustained an explosive injury and shrapnel wounds to his lower limb.

3 children were injured in Komyshany as a result of russian shelling on 28 July. 2 of the 3 children injured by russian strikes are preparing to be discharged from the medical facility. One boy will remain in the hospital as he is in serious condition.

Southern defence forces eliminated 114 enemy personnel and 52 units of weapons and military equipment over the past day. Additionally, they destroyed six field ammunition storage buildups, one fuel and lubricant storage site, one platoon stronghold, and one firing position.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

This week, Lutsk community sent a Ford Ranger SUV (purchased with the funds of Lutsk City Council employees), 6 DJI Mavic 3, 6 DJI Mavic 3T, 30 FPV drones, 10 Bandera Power 225S, an ATN Mars LTV thermal sight to the military and various construction tools and technical equipment, uncluded, chainsaws, axes, electrodes, crowbars, construction staples, nails, engine oil, etc.

The Military unit 7073 received a Nissan Navara pickup thanks to the funds of employees of Lutsk City Council.

Zakarpattia oblast

The 212th Separate Battalion of the 101st Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defence of Zakarpattia of the Zahid Regional Directorate of the Territorial Defense Forces received a car, FPV drones, electronic warfare systems and their components, drones, generators, charging stations and medical equipment from employees of Uzhhorod City Council and benefactors

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The 1st Center for the Protection of Human Rights in Ukraine was established in Ivano-Frankivsk. The project was implemented as a result of cooperation between the Regional Representation of the Commissioner of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for Human Rights in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, the Representation of the UN Refugee Agency in Ukraine and the Rokada CF.

20 young athletes of the football club Zeus from Kharkiv oblast arrived in Prykarpattia to improve their health. They will be hosted by a recreation and health facility in Kosiv region. Children and youth living in frontline areas under constant enemy fire will have the opportunity to rest physically and recharge emotionally.

Lviv oblast

Another 53rd charity concert Ukraine Above All took place in the People’s House of the village of Zolotkovychi. They raised UAH 11,500 to the military.

As part of the international project, Yavoriv National Nature Park received new transport. It is needed to perform various activities, including the creation and renewal of mineralized or fire protection strips. The Support of Nature-Protected Areas in Ukraine project is ongoing, designed to develop nature protection institutions in Lviv oblast. The project is financed by the German government.

Rivne oblast

Over 100 enterprises in Ukraine currently provide veterans with prostheses and other auxiliary means of rehabilitation. This happens free of charge with funds from the state budget. There are four representative offices of such enterprises in Rivne. Since the beginning of the year, they have provided rehabilitation aids to the 51st serviceman in the amount of over UAH 11m.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil community sent 30 AZM drones to the 65th Separate Mechanised Brigade thanks to the budget funds.

As part of the Children of Heroes program of Ternopil City Council, 20 children of Heroes went to an expedition camp in Lithuania thanks to the Strong Together Lithuanian CF and the Embassy of Lithuania in Ternopil.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that the community allocated financial aid for 70 soldiers in need of rehabilitation in the amount of almost UAH 1m.

Since the beginning of the year, the community has sent over 4,100 different FPV models, over 330 copters and 90 electronic devices to the military.

Chernivtsi oblast

Bukovyna joined the project to install mobile rehabilitation modules – unique spaces for the physical and psychological recovery of people who suffered as a result of the russian invasion. The project is part of a social franchise implemented by the Mindi CF in cooperation with the Coordination Center for Mental Health of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, the Bezbarniernost public organisation within the framework of the All-Ukrainian mental health program How are you? – initiatives of the first lady Olena Zelenska.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Office of the President reported that Ukraine and Greece are finalising the text of the bilateral security agreement.

Masahito Moriyama, Japanese Minister of Education and Science, arrived in Kyiv. During the visit, he plans to hold a number of meetings with Ukrainian colleagues. Representatives of Japan and Ukraine should discuss joint projects and opportunities for further cooperation in the cultural and educational spheres.

Bridget Brink, US Ambassador to Ukraine, reported that Penny Pritzker, US special Representative for Reconstruction of Ukraine, arrived in Ukraine.

Radoslaw Sikorski, Polish Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that the country believes that conditions can be created in the EU that will encourage Ukrainians who are conscripted into military service to return home.
