War in Ukraine today: latest news, 28 April 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1525  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

Since the beginning of the day, the aggressor has launched 59 attacks on the positions of the Defense Forces.

Artillery shelling of border areas continues. Today in the Sumy region, the settlements of Korenyok, Bachivsk, Iskryskivshchyna, Ryzhivka, and Atynske were affected; in the Chernihiv region — Khrinivka.

In the North-Slobozhanskyi and Kursk directions, the enemy carried out 45 shelling attacks on settlements and our troops’ positions, one of them using multiple launch rocket systems, launched one airstrike, and used four guided bombs.

In the South-Slobozhanskyi direction, the enemy twice attempted to assault the positions of our units in the areas of Starytsia and toward Chervona Zoria. One engagement is ongoing.

In the Kupiansk and Kramatorsk directions, the enemy did not conduct active operations today.

Near the settlement of Drobysheve, our defenders are repelling an enemy assault in the Lyman direction.

In the Sloviansk direction, Ukrainian forces repelled two attempts by the occupiers to advance near Yampil and toward Rai-Oleksandrivka.

In the Kostiantynivka direction, the occupiers carried out ten attacks near Kostiantynivka, Illinivka, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Ivanopillia, and Pleshchiivka.

In the Pokrovsk direction, since the beginning of the day, the occupiers have attempted 25 times to push our troops from their positions near Novopavlivka, Sofiivka, Vilne, Novooleksandrivka, Rodynske, Pokrovsk, Hryshyne, Udachne, Muravka, and Novopidhhorodne. Three engagements are still ongoing.

In the Oleksandrivka direction, the enemy launched four attacks near Oleksandrohrad, Stepove, and Krasnohirsk. One engagement is currently ongoing.

In the Huliaipole direction, the Defense Forces successfully repelled ten enemy attacks near Zaliznychne, Huliaipilske, Dobropillia, Sviatopetrivka, and Staroukrainka. The enemy also carried out airstrikes near Zelene, Rivne, Charivne, Dolynka, Huliaipilske, and Liubytske. One engagement is ongoing.

In the Orikhiv direction, the enemy carried out airstrikes near Novooleksandrivka and Orikhiv.

In the Prydniprovske direction, the Defense Forces successfully repelled one enemy assault near the Antonivskyi Bridge; another attack is still ongoing.

In other directions, no significant changes in the situation have been observed. No enemy attempts to advance have been recorded.

Ukrainian forces continue to exhaust the enemy along the entire line of contact and in the rear.

Ukraine has invited U.S. companies to help restore its gas infrastructure. It is important for Ukraine that the United States expand cooperation in the energy sector, particularly through joint projects with the state-owned Naftogaz Group. The sides discussed the reconstruction of the energy system and preparations for peak electricity consumption during the summer period. This was reported by Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko.

On the night of April 28, Special Operations Forces drones struck a storage site of Iskander missile systems in temporarily occupied Crimea. The concealed equipment was located on the territory of a former missile base near the village of Ovrazhky, about 40 kilometers from occupied Simferopol. From there, missiles could reach the front line or rear cities of Ukraine within minutes.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

In the South-Slobozhanskyi direction, Russian troops twice assaulted the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of Starytsia and toward Chervona Zoria; as of 16:00, one engagement was ongoing. No attacks were recorded in the Kupiansk direction.

Over the past 24 hours, 226 combat engagements were recorded. In the South-Slobozhanskyi direction, the enemy carried out 18 attacks near Vovchansk, Starytsia, and toward Ternova, Okhrimivka, Bochkovе, Novovasylivka, and Kolodiazne. In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy attacked four times near Novoosynove, Kindrashivka, and toward Kupiansk and Kivsharivka.

Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance units along the border continue to monitor the situation and destroy Russian assault groups attempting to cross the state border. During one such attempt in the directions of Budarky and Zemlianky, Russian forces lost more than 50 personnel killed and wounded.

On the morning of April 28, Russian forces attacked Chuhuiv three times with drones. As a result of the strikes, two people were killed, and another 74-year-old man sustained severe blast injuries and was hospitalized. A passenger car was damaged, as well as a private house in one of the city’s districts — a drone struck a garden area there, with no casualties reported.

Over the past day, three settlements in the Kharkiv region came under enemy strikes. There were no casualties. Russian forces used four guided aerial bombs (KABs), one Molniya-type UAV, and one FPV drone. In the Bohodukhiv district, in the village of Odnorobivka, a private house and two outbuildings were damaged.

A transit evacuation point in Lozova received 218 people over the past day. Since the beginning of its operation, 30,765 evacuees have been registered there.

In the Kharkiv region, the first Support Center for families of the fallen, captured, and missing has begun operating. The space will provide families of defenders with social, psychological, and legal support. More than 11,000 family members of fallen soldiers, over 2,000 missing persons, and more than 200 families of prisoners of war have been registered in the region. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 425 residents of the Kharkiv region have been returned from captivity, including 22 in April of this year.

In Derhachi, a mobile kitchen “Food Without Borders” began operating on April 28. From Monday to Friday, volunteers will provide hot meals to anyone in need and will also deliver food to outlying districts that the food truck cannot reach due to the security situation.

Donetsk oblast

In the Pokrovsk direction, over the past day, Russian forces attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 52 times. Ukrainian troops repelled assaults near Bilytske, Zatyshok, Nove Shakhove, Dorozhne, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Novooleksandrivka, Shevchenko, Hryshyne, Vasylivka, Muravka, Molodetske, Novopidhhorodne, Novopavlivka, Novyi Donbas, Pokrovsk, Udachne, and Serhiivka.

The Defense Forces also repelled more than ten Russian attacks in the Lyman and Kostiantynivka directions.

The Russian army continues to actively use strike drones in the Kostiantynivka area, attempting to hit Ukrainian positions and logistics. Despite constant pressure from FPV drones, Molniya UAVs, and Shahed drones, Ukrainian units continue to maintain logistics and hold the city’s defense.

On the night of April 28, Russian forces attacked Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, and Bilenke. At around 01:00 in Mykolaivka, a store was destroyed as a result of the strike.

On April 27, a total of 898 enemy strikes were recorded along the front line and in residential areas of the Donetsk region. Sloviansk and Bilenke were under fire.

In Sloviansk, Russian forces struck an administrative building with an FPV drone. In Bilenke, a Russian drone hit the road surface. Overall, one civilian facility was damaged over the past day.

Luhansk oblast

In the Luhansk region, Russian forces continue constant shelling and are using the full range of available weaponry. Over the past day, the occupiers carried out four strikes with tube artillery and another four with mortars; they also used automatic grenade launchers, UAVs, and FPV drones. In the Lyman direction, the enemy launched 13 attacks near three settlements.

In the so-called “LNR,” about 700 World War II monuments are in a state of disrepair, yet the occupation authorities have not allocated funds for their restoration either this year or over the past decade.

In Luhansk, around 8,000 apartments may fall under so-called “nationalization.” Under new rules imposed by the occupation administration, housing can be declared “ownerless” if it is not registered in the Russian registry, if utility payments have not been made for more than a year, or if the owners have not lived there for over three months.

Over the past week, fighters of the “Pomsta” brigade eliminated 191 occupiers, wounded another 236, and captured one. Ukrainian forces carried out 213 fire strikes on enemy deployment areas, destroying and damaging an infantry fighting vehicle, a light armored tractor, four armored combat vehicles, two multiple launch rocket systems, 19 artillery pieces, 154 vehicles, and two ammunition depots.

They also struck 73 communications, electronic warfare (EW), and electronic intelligence (ELINT) systems, 28 UAV control points, neutralized 212 drones, and four ground robotic systems.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the State Emergency Service, two men were injured in Kyiv as a result of a russian drone attack on the afternoon of 28 April. One of them has been hospitalised. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, the façade of an unfinished building was damaged and the roof structure partially destroyed. In the Solomianskyi district, debris from an enemy drone fell onto the grounds of a cemetery. All fires have been extinguished.

According to the Kyiv Regional State Administration, Kyiv Oblast is joining the project to establish ‘Tviy’ children’s support centres. There, children will be able to receive psychological, social and emotional support, take part in group sessions, art therapy and developmental activities, or simply spend time in a stable and friendly environment.

According to the Regional Military Administration, representatives from Kyiv oblast took part in the National Resilience Forum, which took place last week in Kyiv. In total, 286 resilience centres are helping people across Ukraine, 26 of which operate in Kyiv oblast. These are special barrier-free spaces created as part of the All-Ukrainian mental health programme ‘How Are You?’.

The Darnytskyi District State Administration in Kyiv recently hosted an art therapy event for female military personnel and veterans. The art therapy was developed specifically for women who are serving or have combat experience. The participants worked using the Fluid art technique – an artistic approach that requires no special training, helps to reduce internal tension, process emotions through colour and form, and restore a sense of inner balance and self-confidence.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to the State Environmental Inspection of the Polissya District, the total cost of environmental damage caused by the russian federation’s shelling of Korosten on 3 April 2026 amounts to over 988 million hryvnias. At the sites where critical infrastructure was hit and within the Brovar neighbourhood, land plots covering a total area of over 22,000 square metres have been found to be littered with debris and waste from the destruction – an area equivalent to more than three football pitches. In addition, due to fires at the impact sites, over 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other pollutants were released into the atmosphere.

Sumy oblast

Over the past week, the Defence Forces destroyed or suppressed 569 enemy UAVs over Sumy oblast using electronic warfare systems. Among them were 481 strike drones. According to the Territorial Defence headquarters, more than 700 UAVs were detected in the region’s airspace during this period, with about 80% neutralised by Ukrainian air defence forces.

On 28 April, russian forces attacked Konotop by UAVs, injuring five employees of a local enterprise. Private houses, a hospital building, administrative facilities, civilian infrastructure, and vehicles were damaged. All fires were extinguished. Due to the threat of repeated air attacks, rescuers were forced to temporarily suspend their work.

Mayor Artem Semenikhin reported that following the massive drone attack on Konotop, around 8,000 consumers were left without electricity.

On the night of 28 April, russian forces attacked the settlement of Svesa in Shostka region by two Shahed drones. Explosions occurred near residential houses, leaving the settlement without electricity. According to Andrii Biliaiev, Head of Shostka Regional Military Administration, emergency repair works are ongoing in the area.

The City Military Administration informed that at the same night, a russian UAV struck a park in Kovpakivskyi district of Sumy. The impact damaged five private houses and a shop. There were no casualties.

According to Sumyoblenergo, in northern parts of Sumy oblast, large-scale power outages occurred as a result of russian attacks. Energy workers are working to restore electricity distribution.

The Regional Military Administration reported that on 27 April, russian guided aerial bombs struck Yampil community, injuring four civilians: women aged 78 and 75, and men aged 74 and 56.

Over the past day, from the morning of 27 April to the morning of 28 April, russian forces carried out more than 30 attacks on 19 settlements across 12 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 18 hours and 4 minutes over the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • in Yampil community, private and multi-apartment houses, vehicles, shops, hospital and educational buildings, non-residential buildings, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Shostka community, private houses and non-residential buildings were damaged or destroyed;
  • in Esman community, private houses and civilian infrastructure facilities were destroyed;
  • in Znob-Novhorodske community, a private house and outbuildings were destroyed;
  • in Svesa community, private houses were damaged and destroyed, along with residential premises and civilian infrastructure;
  • in Sumy community, civilian infrastructure, non-residential buildings, a shop, private houses, and vehicles were damaged;
  • in Berezivka community, a non-residential building and agricultural machinery were damaged;
  • in Konotop community, private houses, hospital premises, administrative buildings, civilian infrastructure, and vehicles were damaged.

Over the past day, 12 people were evacuated from border areas by local authorities in cooperation with the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and volunteer organisations.

The Regional Military Administration informed that the curfew in Sumy oblast has been reduced by one hour. It will now be in effect from 12am to 5am. The decision was made at a meeting of the Regional Defence Council together with military command and relevant services, taking into account, among other factors, appeals from businesses.

Chernihiv oblast

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, reported that on 28 April at around 4am, russian forces attacked Troitske village in Novhorod-Siverskyi community by a strike UAV. The impact caused a fire near a residential house.

At around 3am, russian troops launched UAV strikes on Zhadove village in the border area of Chernihiv oblast. The drone hits caused a fire at agricultural enterprises, destroying hangars and outbuildings along with grain and farming equipment.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that during the night of 27–28 April, russian forces attacked two communities in Chernihiv region. As a result of the strikes, a farm was damaged in Kulykivka community, while residential houses caught fire in Horodnia community.

In one of the villages of Semenivka community, agricultural enterprises were also targeted by russian forces.

Over the course of 27 April, russian forces attacked three border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that the enemy carried out shelling using mortars (31 explosions), conducted FPV drone strikes (8 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (1 explosion). At least six settlements came under enemy fire.

According to the Regional Military Administration, Chernihiv oblast will receive its first cogeneration units from German Society for International Cooperation. In total, 20 generating units are planned to be installed in the region, with part of them provided by GIZ.

16 children from Chernihiv and and Novhorod-Siverskyi communities spent nearly a week on vacation in Zakarpattia oblast. The initiative was organised by “United Ukraine” in cooperation with the Junior Academy of Sciences. The programme included excursions, experiments, science shows, training sessions, outdoor games, and walks.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Nikopol district. In the Myrivska community, a man was injured as a result of a morning FPV drone attack. From the evening until morning, the occupiers struck the district with FPV drones, targeting Nikopol, the Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovske rural, and Myrivska communities. A fire broke out. Two private houses, a car, and an outbuilding were damaged.

Kryvyi Rih district. Kryvyi Rih and the Zelenodolsk community came under attack. Infrastructure, private houses, and vehicles were damaged. In the morning, the enemy again directed UAVs at the city. Remain in shelters until the all-clear is given.

Nikopol district. Five people were injured. The enemy attacked Nikopol, the Mozolevska, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovske rural, and Myrivska communities, using drones and artillery. Fires broke out. Nine apartment buildings and five private houses, as well as vehicles, infrastructure, a power line, and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Kryvyi Rih district. As a result of a UAV attack in Kryvyi Rih, a 40-year-old man was killed. Sincere condolences to his family. Six other men were injured. Fires broke out. An administrative building, infrastructure, and a power line were damaged.

Synelnykove district. The occupiers struck the Raiivska community with a UAV. One person was killed. A fire broke out. Buildings and four vehicles were damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, people bid farewell to servicemen Artur Dmitriiev, Oleksii Shpudeiko, and Andrii Makarenko.

Artur Dmitriiev was killed on April 8, 2026, while carrying out a combat mission near the village of Omelnyk in the Zaporizhzhia region. He was 55 years old.

Andrii Makarenko was killed on November 27, 2023, near the village of Krynky in the Kherson region. He had been considered missing in action since that time. A DNA examination has now confirmed his death. He was 47 years old.

Oleksii Shpudeiko had been considered missing in action since August 2024. A DNA match has now confirmed his death. He was 49 years old.

In the Kirovohrad region, explosive ordnance disposal specialists destroyed a 50-kilogram warhead from a Russian UAV that had failed to detonate. The remains of the drone were found in an agricultural field near one of the settlements, according to regional police spokesperson Oksana Kovtunenko.

Poltava oblast

In the Poltava region, people will bid farewell to serviceman Anatolii Mamchenko from Kremenchuk. The soldier was killed on March 18, 2025, while carrying out a combat mission in the Kursk direction. 

Cherkasy oblast

A day of mourning has been declared in the Khrystynivka community following the death of defender Maksym Solomenik. He served as a UAV operator in a separate mechanized brigade. He was killed on April 19, 2026, in the Donetsk region.

In Smila, people bid farewell to fallen serviceman Denys Vysochanskyi. On October 17, 2024, he was killed during enemy assault actions in the Volnovakha district of the Donetsk region. After a long wait, his identity was officially confirmed through a DNA match on April 20, 2026.

In Cherkasy, residents said goodbye to fallen serviceman Oleksandr Stelmakh, who was killed in the Donetsk direction.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 27 April, Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 27 russian attacks on Huliaipole and Orikhiv regions. Ukrainian defenders stopped russian forces in the areas of Dobropillia, Pryluky, Olenokostiantynivka, Zaliznychne, Sviatopetrivka, Myrne, Tsvitkove, Charivne, Huliaipilske and Stepove.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that on 27 April, 2 women were injured as a result of shelling in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The russian forces carried out 614 strikes on 45 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The attacks were mostly carried out by FPV drones.

The russian military is attacking Zaporizhzhia. 2 men aged 40 and 45 were injured. Both are in moderate condition.

Mykolaiv oblast

Referring to Mykolaiv RMA, during 27 April, 7 Shahed attack drones and various types of decoy UAVs were neutralised in Mykolaiv oblast.

On 27 April, the russian military attacked Mykolaiv and Ochakiv community by UAVs. One person was injured.

In Mykolaiv, a 60-year-old man was injured — he sustained minor injuries and will be treated on an outpatient basis. Windows in 3 apartments in several high-rise buildings and a car were damaged.

The russian forces attacked Ochakiv community by an FPV drone. There were no injuries reported. 

Odesa oblast

According to the Air Force, in the morning, groups of UAVs moving from the Black Sea towards Odesa were detected in the airspace.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Volodymyr Territorial Medical Association, orthopedic traumatologists successfully performed a complex operation on a patient with a repeated fracture in the area of an old combat injury. The man received the primary injury in 2023 and in 2026 a new fracture occurred, requiring repeated surgical intervention. Medics managed to stabilize the patient’s condition thanks to modern treatment methods and a proven algorithm of actions.

Zakarpattia oblast

13-year-old Nazar Tokar from Uzhhorod became the bronze medalist of AIR BRIDGE, the 1st international drone racing tournament in the unique discipline of FPV Drone Racing with Payload. The competition took place in Rzeszow, Poland, as part of the large-scale conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine (URC 2026).

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk sent 20 FPV drones, 3 Starlinks, goggles, and a remote control to the 1st Battalion of the 122nd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade in Sumy oblast.

Lviv oblast

At the 90th extraordinary session, deputies of Pustomyty City Council made a decision to donated (UAH 1m) the material values of the community’s communal property to military units A0998, A1556, A4010, A4438, A4681, A4848.

Rivne oblast

Rivne Veterans’ Association is working on developing an AI assistant for veterans and their families. This tool will help them quickly obtain information about various services. The initiative is being implemented with the participation of Google and Microsoft, as well as Ukrainian private partners.

Ternopil oblast

82 defenders from Ternopil will receive a one-time cash grant to purchase the necessary equipment. Since the beginning of this year, 2,370 servicemen have already received the funds.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

109 servicemen from Khmelnytskyi community received funds for treatment or rehabilitation. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 1.5m.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi City Council reported Memorial plaques to the fallen soldier Serhii Shutovsky will be installed in the community.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Norway will manufacture Ukrainian mid-strike drones designed to strike targets in the enemy’s close rear at a distance of 50–200 km.

Latvia has declared the organizers of the russian pavilion at the Venice Biennale persona non grata.
