It has been the 914th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 25 August, russian invaders continued storming the positions of Ukrainian defenders. 

There were 68 engagements on the front line.

In the northern border regions of Ukraine, areas around the settlements of Starykove, Ulanove, Bachivsk, Khodyne, Fotovyzh, Holubivka, Slavhorod, Porozok, and Popivka were hit by enemy artillery and mortar fire. Additionally, the occupiers carried out bombings, dropping nearly three dozen guided bombs (KABs) in the vicinities of Svesa, Druzhba, Pervomaiske, Stepanivka, Esman, Studenok, and Yastrubine.

In Kursk oblast of russia, russian forces continued firing with tanks, artillery, and mortars, and bombed their own settlements with KABs.

Towards Kharkiv, there were three enemy attacks near Lyptsi and Vovchansk, where one battle is still ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy carried out seven attacks towards Petropavlivka, Kolisnykivka, Hlushkivka, Stelmakhivka, and Synkivka. Three clashes are still continuing.

Towards Lyman, 13 battles started. The enemy stormed Ukrainian positions near Hrekivka, Druzhelyubivka, Proletarske, Pershotravneve, Novosadove, Torske, and Nevske, with the most intense fighting near Nevske, where five attacks took place, and the battle is still ongoing.

Towards Siversk, Ukrainian defenders stopped five enemy assaults near Verkhnokamianske, Spirne, and Vyimka.

Towards Kramatorsk, the invading army advanced towards Spirne, Chasiv Yar, and Andriivka. A total of six clashes occurred, with one still ongoing. The occupiers struck Hryhorivka and Chasiv Yar with unguided rockets (NARs) three times, firing about two dozen of these air rockets.

Towards Toretsk, the invaders attacked four times near Toretsk and Nelypivka. All assaults were repelled.

Towards Pokrovsk, the russians launched 17 assaults around seven different settlements. Eleven of these attacks occurred near Kalynove and Novohrodivka, where the enemy also used Ka-52 helicopters. The Ukrainian Defense Forces held off the russian offensive, repelling 13 attacks, with four clashes still continuing. The enemy also dropped KABs on Oleksandropil and Halytsynivka.

Towards Kurakhove, the invaders attacked 10 times near Karlivka, Nevelske, Pervomaiske, Heorhiivka, and Kostyantynivka.

Towards Vremivka, the enemy launched three assaults on Ukrainian positions near Vodyane but was met with stiff resistance. They also struck Vuhledar with NARs twice.

Towards Orikhiv and Kherson, the occupiers, using aviation, launched two airstrikes in the vicinities of Zherebyanky and Tokarivka but did not conduct assaults.


Herman Halushchenko, Energy Minister of Ukraine, reported that another nuclear power unit has resumed operation after planned maintenance. This unit will add 1,000 MW of capacity, strengthening the stability of the energy system.

The relevant document on the Verkhovna Rada website reported that the law ratifying the Rome Statute has been signed.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Towards Kharkiv, russia lost 92 people and 88 personnel shelters, as well as 82 pieces of equipment over the last day. According to the report of Kharkiv military grouping, russia launched 21 strikes with kamikaze drones and fired 401 times at the positions of the Ukrainian Defence Forces. The occupiers used tactical aviation four times, using four UAVs and 14 unguided missiles.

Yurii Fedorenko, commander of the Achilles UAV battalion of the 92nd Brigade, reports that towards Kharkiv, the russian army has somewhat lost its ability to conduct high-intensity strike and assault operations. According to him, at the moment, russia is attacking with a small number of manpower, supported by lightly armoured vehicles, artillery and massive use of drones.

The press service of Kharkiv region’s State Emergency Service reported that a 55-year-old man was injured in Balakliia as a result of a missile strike on the private sector. They noted that the russian strike had set fire to two residential buildings, a garage and a car on a total area of more than 170 square metres.

At 04:26am, russians attacked the Industrial district of Kharkiv. As a result of the shelling, trees and shrubs burned over an area of 150 square metres.

At 04:20am, russians attacked Chuhuiv city. As a result of the shelling, two private houses burned. 5 civilians were injured, including a 4-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl.

At 04:08am, russians attacked Slobidskyi district of Kharkiv. As a result of the shelling, a 2-storey private house was on fire. A private house was damaged. 8 people were injured. 62 households were damaged.

At 9:05pm, russians attacked Balakliya, Izium region. As a result of the shelling, 6 private houses were destroyed. Roofs and window glazing of 7 private houses and 6 cars were damaged. A 55 year old man was injured.

At 5:28pm, russians attacked Novooosynove, Kupiansk region. As a result of the shelling, a 2-storey house and an outbuilding burned.

At 12:18pm, russians attacked Novooosynove village, Kupiansk reggion. As a result of the shelling, a private house burned down. Four women aged 57, 64, 28, 86 were injured. 

At 10:20am, russians attacked Kupiansk. A man of 75 years old was injured as a result of the shelling.

At 2:46pm, russians attacked Balakliia town. A rescue vehicle exploded while extinguishing a fire. As a result, two rescuers were injured.

Towards Kharkiv sector, there were three battles near Hlyboke and Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy attacked 14 times. Defence forces repelled assaults near Novoselivka, Stelmakhivka, Synkivka and Hlushkivka.

Donetsk oblast

The russian federation hit a residential area in Kramatorsk on the night of 25 August. As of 09:19am, according to the regional prosecutor’s office, foreign journalists aged 38 and 40 were injured. The wounded suffered from mine-blast trauma, brain contusion, a broken leg, contusion, and cut wounds. Another of their colleagues is likely to be under the rubble.

On 24 August, russians killed 7 residents of Donetsk oblast: 5 in Kostiantynivka, 1 in Toretsk and 1 in Kotlyne. According to the CMA, the number of people killed in the region since the beginning of the full-scale invasion has reached 2,182, and 5,717 wounded, excluding victims in occupied Mariupol and Volnovakha.

Russian troops conducted 2,871 attacks along the frontline and in the residential sector.

There were attacks in 11 localities: the towns of Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Kurakhove, Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Ukrainsk, Chasiv Yar, Raihorodok, and the villages of Dibrova, Kotlyne, and Uspenivka.

Twenty-four civilian objects were destroyed, including 12 residential buildings, a hotel, trade pavilions, cars, and critical infrastructure.

Kostiantynivka was shelled with artillery, killing 5 civilians and wounding 6 residents. Three apartment blocks and three private houses, 5 trade kiosks, 2 cars and a gas pipeline were damaged.

The enemy shelled Kotlyne with Smerch multiple rocket launchers, killing one person and injuring another, and damaging three private houses.

In Toretsk, the shelling resulted in one killed and two wounded residents.

Occupiers fired an Iskander-M missile at Kramatorsk at night – two civilians were wounded, another person is probably under the rubble. Rescue and search operations are ongoing. A hotel and an apartment building were damaged.

In Kurakhove, three residents were wounded as a result of artillery shelling, including a girl born in 2007. A private house was destroyed.

There is a wounded person in Ukrainsk.

People are evacuating Myrnohrad, Donetsk oblast, due to the approaching frontline. As of 23 August, Yurii Tretiak, Acting Head of the city’s military administration, told Suspilne Donbas, about 11,000 residents, including 319 children, remained in the city. The Vostok SOS organisation is helping to evacuate the elderly and sick. According to Vladyslav Arsenii, an evacuee, about forty people with disabilities were evacuated from this area in a week.

Nina, a 79-year-old resident of Myrnohrad (pictured with a stretcher), waited for the evacuation, lying on the floor, for more than 12 hours. Next to Nina in the car is Raisa. Evacuators took her from the area of the 5/6 mine. The entrance was closed because of the approaching frontline. There is no connection there – they were looking for the woman for about an hour.

Luhansk oblast

The previous day, there were combat actions Makiivka and Stelmakhivka. The occupiers did not succeed there. They continue to shell villages along the frontline. They fired twice from multiple rocket launchers near Kuzemivka. Nevske, Makiivka, Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka were shelled with cannon artillery. The enemy used 88 drones near these settlements.

A new educational programme called ‘Luhansk character’ was introduced in schools of the so-called ‘luhansk people’s republic’. Its authors are employees of the local pedagogical university who used the experience of the soviet education system. For example, the ‘character’ will be formed in primary school students. In the middle school, there will be ‘pioneers’, and in the high school, ‘hard workers’. But the latter title would have to be earned by performing ‘socially useful work’. The russians decided to start the decline of the ‘republic’ with the younger generation.

In Sievierodonetsk, the contractor once again failed to pay the hired workers who were repairing five-storey buildings in the old districts of the city. They only managed to partially work on one of the entrances. Now the occupiers are looking for new workers, which they can also use for free for some time.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Irpin’s First Deputy Mayor Andrii Kravchuk announced that Irpin will receive a €5.7 million grant from the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO). The money will be used to dismantle buildings destroyed by the war and recycle the remains of building structures.

Kyiv City Employment Centre reported that Kyiv enterprises received more than UAH 15m in compensation for employing IDPs. Since the beginning of 2024, 750 IDPs have found jobs in Kyiv, and the Kyiv Employment Service has paid employers UAH 13.2m in compensation for their employment. Another UAH 2.4m was allocated to pay the salaries of internally displaced persons.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of the RMA, informed that the first inclusive town for veterans was built in Kyiv oblast. The keys to the new homes were handed over to 45 soldiers who sustained significant physical injuries during the fighting. The housing and land will become the property of the defenders and their families. The benefactors will make repairs, install kitchen furniture and equip bathrooms.

The head of Darnytsia District State Administration, Mykola Kalashnyk, noted that the construction of shelters in two kindergartens in the district of Kyiv will be completed in early autumn. The shelters will be inclusive and able to accommodate more than 500 children and educators, enabling the educational institutions to operate at full capacity.

The Department of Tourism and Promotions of Kyiv City State Administration reported that in the first half of 2024, tax revenues from the tourism industry in Kyiv increased by 70% compared to the same period last year. The amount of revenue is higher than before russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

An exhibition of unmanned weapons and robotic equipment is taking place on Kyiv’s St Sophia Square. Dozens of exhibits are on display, including equipment used by the National Police and the State Emergency Service.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy announced that a conference ‘Cultural Heritage in Ukraine: From Preservation to Postwar Restoration’ will be held in Kyiv on 5 September. Guests and participants of the event will get acquainted with the current opportunities of support programmes for the sector, project presentations, and initiatives to preserve tangible and intangible cultural heritage. 

Zhytomyr oblast

The Ministry of Social Policy reports that since August 2024, eight Resilience Centres have been operating in Zhytomyr oblast. The main activity of these centres is free psychosocial support. There, you can consult a psychologist, attend mutual support groups, join community volunteer initiatives and start training under international programmes. In particular, a new barrier-free space has been launched in Korosten community, and another centre is being prepared for opening in Zviahel.

In Zhytomyr, the annual race ‘I honour soldiers, I run for the heroes of Ukraine’ will take place in the hydropark. The event will take place on 31 August in all Ukrainian cities simultaneously in memory of the fallen defenders of Ukraine.

Bishop Paisiy, Head of Zhytomyr-Ovruch Diocese of the OCU, says that the religious community of the village of Molochky in Krasnopil community of Berdychiv region  moved from the UOC-Moscow Patriarchate to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The decision to move was made by the people and their priest at a general meeting.

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that on the evening of 25 August, the enemy launched an airstrike on a residential area within Sumy community. Preliminary information indicates there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. All necessary services are currently working at the site, providing medical assistance to those affected.

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that russian forces shelled Svessa community in Sumy oblast, causing damage to an apartment building. Emergency services are on the scene, and there are confirmed casualties and injuries.

In the morning, it was reported that a nighttime strike on Sumy resulted in one death and six injuries. Two hits occurred in the city’s residential sector, causing damage to several houses.

During night and morning, russians carried out 27 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in  Sumy oblast, resulting in 85 explosions.  The attacks targeted  Sumy, Verkhnia Syrovatka, Stepanivka, Mykolaivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Putyvl, Nova Slobidka, Berezivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, Svessa, Druzhbivka, Znob-Novhorodka communities.

Mykolaivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Novo Slobidka, Berezivka, Hlukhiv, Esman, Shalyhyne, Druzhba, Svessa, and Seredyna-Buda communities.

On 24 August, russians carried out 74 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in  Sumy oblast, resulting in 182 explosions. The attacks targeted Sumy, Mykolaivka, Khotiv, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Richky, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Slobidka, Berezivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, Druzhbivka, Svessa, Seredyna-Buda and Znob-Novhorodka communities.

Krasnopillia community: artillery (23 explosions), mortar shelling (4 explosions), MLRS attacks (14 explosions), FPV drones (11 explosions), and explosive devices dropped from UAVs (1 explosion). The area also faced airstrikes (4 explosions).

Yunakiv community: airstrikes (KAB) (6 explosions).

Esman community: the enemy shelled by FPV drones (2 explosions), as a result of which 2 civilians were killed. The enemy also fired mortars (7 explosions), carried out an air strike (KAB) (1 explosion).

Bilopillia community: the russians hitted  by artillery (4 explosions), mortars (7 explosions). There were also airstrikes (KAB) (5 explosions).

Rychky community: an airstrike (KAB) was carried out (2 explosions).

Druzhbivka community: airstrikes (KAB) (4 explosions).

Velyka Pysarivka community: artillery shelling (33 explosions), mortar shelling (7 explosions), FPV-drone shelling (1 explosion), airstrikes (KAB) (4 explosions) were carried out. As a result of one of the shellings, 1 civilian was killed.

Seredyna-Buda community: the russians dropped 10 mines on the community’s territory. There were also attacks by FPV drones (7 explosions), as a result of which 1 civilian was injured.

Svessa community: an airstrike (AB) was recorded (4 explosions), as a result of which a civilian was injured. There was also a missile strike (1 explosion).

Khotin community: an airstrike (KAB) (2 explosions), shelling from mortars (3 explosions), FPV drones (2 explosions).

Berezivka community: there was an airstrike (KAB) (2 explosions).

Znob-Novhorodka community: 2 mines were dropped by the Russians on the territory of the community.

Nova Slobidka community: shelling was carried out by an FPV drone (1 explosion).

Shalyhyne community: shelling by FPV drones (4 explosions), mortar shelling (2 explosions) was recorded.

Putivl community: there was an FPV drone attack (1 explosion).

Mykolaivka community: missile strike 1 (explosion) was carried out.

Sumy community: the enemy carried out an air-missile attack on the civilian infrastructure of the oblast center. All necessary services are available on site. Previously, there are wounded. The consequences of an enemy attack are clarified.

As a result of hostilities in Sumy oblast, power was cut off in three settlements – 987 subscribers.

The Ministry of Energy reported that in total, 12,300 consumers in 101 settlements of the oblast remain without electricity.

On 26 August, at 10:00am, a meeting will be held in Sumy for residents affected by the missile strike. The meeting, which will take place in the shelter of school No. 23, will involve discussions with local authorities and NGOs regarding financial, material, psychological, and reconstruction assistance.

Chernihiv oblast

Throughout the day, russian forces attacked with 120 mm mortars, drones and barrel artillery on the border of Chernihiv oblast. There were 81 explosions.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community: 19 explosions (probably by barrel artillery, mortars and drones) in the area of ​ Pushkari, Hremiach and Kovpynka.

Semenivka community: 41 explosions (probably by barrel artillery and UAVs) in Progress, Bleshnia and Karpovychi.

Snovsk community: 18 explosions (probably by mortars and UAVs) in  Khrinivka

Horodnia community: 3 explosions (probably by UAVs) in Hasychivka and Senkivka.

No casualties or injuries from shelling among the local population have been reported.

Khrystyna Dmytrenko from Chernihiv became the top-performing Ukrainian in the mass start at the Summer Biathlon World Championship, finishing in ninth place despite five shooting errors. Anna Kryvonos and Anastasiya Merkushyna, each with nine shooting errors, finished outside the top 20. The world champion title was claimed by Baiba Bendika from Latvia.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Nikopol region is under attack again. At night,on 25 August, occupiers shelled Nikopol with artillery and a drone. A warehouse was damaged. In the morning, they targeted Pokrovsk and Chervonohryhorivka communities. 

On 23 August the enemy carried out more than a dozen attacks in the Nikopol region.  They hit Nikopol, Marhanetsk, Pokrovsk and Chervonohryhorivka communities with artillery and drones. Several fires broke out, damaging a garden association and a power line. According to updated information, a private house and a non-residential building were damaged in the morning strikes in the area.

Over 40 wholesale, retail and consumer services businesses have been relocated to Kryvyi Rih during the war. They moved to the city from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv oblasts.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​In the week from 19 to 25 August, 18 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were reported killed.

Since the beginning of the full-scale russian invasion, businesses relocated to Vinnytsia oblast have created more than 2,000 jobs and paid more than UAH 53 million to local budgets. In total, the Vinnytsia oblast has hosted 390 companies from Donetsk, Kharkiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Luhansk, Mykolaiv and Kyiv oblasts. 

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, a public hub Space of the Brave runs a self-support group for wives and mothers of military personnel. During the sessions, they can get support and help. Sisters and fiancées of servicemen can also apply.

Poltava oblast

Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the eco-park in the village of Kovalivka in Poltava oblast has sheltered more than 2,000 animals evacuated from russian shelling. Some of them have already been returned to their previous habitats, while others remain in Poltava oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that on 24 August the russian army struck 12 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhya oblast 335 times. They shelled Prymorske, Stepnogirsk, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Robotyne, Malynivka, Poltavka and Preobrazhenka 142 times with artillery.  

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on the night of 25 August, air defence forces conducted combat operations in Mykolaiv oblast. In addition, the russian army attacked Kutsurub community with artillery. There were no casualties. 

On the night of 25 August, air defence forces shot down eight Shahed 131/136 drones in the Mykolaiv oblast. As a result of the falling debris, about 15 residential buildings and outbuildings were damaged in Mykolaiv region.

Kherson oblast

In the afternoon, the russian military attacked Dniprovskyi district of Kherson from a drone. A woman was hit and sustained a shrapnel injury to her leg. 

Kherson Regional Military Administration said that in the morning, the russian military attacked a residential building in Dniprovskyi district. Rescuers unblocked the body of a dead woman from the rubble.

The russian military dropped explosives from a drone on a petrol station in Kherson. A petrol station employee and a car driver are injured.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that on 24 August the russian army shelled 20 settlements in Kherson oblast. They attacked a critical infrastructure facility, a factory, two multi-storey buildings and 26 private houses. Nine people, including a child, were injured.

The Armed forces of Southern Ukraine eliminated 64 occupiers on 24 August and destroyed 40 pieces of russian weapons and military equipment. Among them are the Tor missile system, the Azart telecommunications system, the BM-21″Grad multiple rocket launcher system, seven artillery systems, four reconnaissance UAVs and two russian army boats.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that Military Unit A 4248 received a DJI Mavic 3 Thermal quadcopter and an EcoFlow Delta 2 charging station. This was reported in the.

In the lobby of the Palace of Culture of the city of Lutsk, Anastasia Kuts’s personal exhibition Indomitable: the Face of Courage was opened. There are over 20 paintings – portraits of defenders in military gear, wounded and in ordinary everyday life. Each portrait is someone’s life story, on which the war left its mark.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA reported that sailor Robert Balog from Uzhhorod region, who was illegally detained by the occupiers since 2022, returned from captivity.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Senior lieutenant Ruslan Dank, scout of the 102nd Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces, was posthumously awarded the Hero of Ukraine title with the award of the Golden Star order. He was killed on 23 February 2024.

The RMA sent 100 FPV drones worth over UAH 1m to the 109th Battalion of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade thanks to the regional budget.

Lviv oblast

As part of the Birds of Victory project, the oblast sent the 10,000th drone to defenders on the front lines. Lana Vetrova, Head of the National Register of Records, personally testified that this is a Ukrainian record: the largest transfer of drones to the defence forces within one project and from one oblast.

The RMA reported that the oblast sent 323 drones to the military, including the 10,000th anniversary one.

22-year-old Orest Koliada from Chervonohrad region returned from captivity. He served in the 35th Assault Brigade. He was captured on 30 April 2022 near the village of Vremivka. The soldier’s mother, Oksana Koliada, was informed that her son had been released from captivity, just as she took the floor during a peaceful rally in support of all missing persons and prisoners of Sokal community.

Volodymyr Bilas received the III degree For Courage Order. The military man served in the A4267 military unit, specifically, as part of which he performed combat missions in Bakhmut region, Donetsk oblast, where he was seriously wounded.

Rivne oblast

In the current year, 336 IDPs were successfully employed in Rivne oblast. In total, 1.400 IDPs applied to the regional employment centre. At the same time, payments to employers who employ displaced persons continue. Thus, as of August, compensation for labour costs was provided to 74 employers who provided work for 130 IDPs.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil community sent Mavic 3T quadcopters, FPV drones and other useful equipment to the 128th Territorial Defense Brigade, in which Olegh Tyahnibok, Head of the Freedom All-Ukrainian Association, is fighting, thanks to the budget funds.

Ternopil community sent 15 Mavic quadcopters to the Unmanned Systems Battalion of the 110th Separate Mechanised Brigade, thanks to the budget funds.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council allocated UAH 182.5m from the city budget to the military over the past 8 months. The funds were directed to the purchase of quadcopters, hexacopters, EW, PEP, FPV drones and other equipment of this format.

The RMA reported that in Horodotsk Community, a shelter is under construction, which will be one of the largest in Khmelnytskyi oblast. According to technical data, the shelter is designed for 1,000 people.

Chernivtsi oblast

The 82nd Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of the Airborne Assault Troops of the Armed Forces of Ukraine was awarded the honorary name Bukovynska. The corresponding decree was signed by Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, before Independence Day.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Latvia and Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of cyber security. The document provides for the exchange of information on cyber threats, joint actions in the event of cyber incidents and cooperation in the field of education, research and innovation.

Andrzej Duda, President of Poland, stated that his country has already trained 23,000 Ukrainian military personnel (soldiers, medics, and rescuers).
