What happened in Ukraine today:
Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:
The occupants continue to attack. At this time, the highest number of combat engagements is towards Huliaipole. The defense forces are holding back the enemy, inflicting significant losses. On 21 February, the occupiers attacked 75 times in total.
The shelling of border areas also continues. In Sumy oblast, the following settlements were affected today: Iskryskivshchyna, Ryzhivka, Bezsalivka, and Kniazhychi. In Chernihiv oblast — Khrinivka and Lubiane. The enemy also launched an airstrike on Sumy.
Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, the enemy carried out 27 strikes on settlements and positions of our troops, two of which involved the use of MLRS. One airstrike was launched using 3 guided aerial bombs. One combat engagement took place.
Towards Southern Sloboda, no active enemy offensive actions have been recorded.
Towards Kupiansk, the adversary moved forward four times towards Pishchane. One of these attempts is ongoing.
Towards Lyman, the occupiers attacked six times towards Hrekivka, Stavky, Drobysheve, and Masliakivka. Two combat engagements have not yet concluded.
Towards Sloviansk, the occupiers unsuccessfully tried to advance to Ukrainian troop positions towards Yampil, Dronivka, and Zakitne. Two out of three attacks are still ongoing.
Towards Kramatorsk, no active assault actions by the aggressor are observed.
Towards Kostiantynivka, the invaders carried out ten offensive actions near Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, Shcherbynivka, Berestok, Rusyn Yar, Sofiivka, and Novopavlivka. Three attacks are ongoing.
Towards Pokrovsk, since the beginning of the day, the occupiers have tried 23 times to push Ukrainian warriors from their positions in the vicinity of Shakhove, Rodynske, Lyman, Pokrovsk, Udachne, and Molodetske. 19 attacks have already been stopped.
Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy advanced towards Zaporizke. The assault action was repelled. Velykomykhailivka was hit by an airstrike.
Towards Huliaipole, there were 27 attacks in the vicinity of Huliaipole and towards Zaliznychne, Staroukrainka, Sviatopetrivka, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, Zahirne, and Hirke. Six assaults are still ongoing. The enemy launched airstrikes in the vicinity of Rozivka, Hirke, Zaliznychne, Myrne, Huliaipilske, Luhivske, and Charivne.
Towards Orikhiv, the occupiers attacked near Prymorske. The combat engagement is ongoing. Komyshuvakha, Yulivka, and Novoandriivka came under airstrikes.
Towards Kherson, there were no active enemy offensive actions.
In other areas, there were no significant changes in the situation and no enemy attempts to advance either.
Ukrainian troops are exhausting the enemy along the entire line of contact and in the rear.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
There were 175 combat clashes in the oblast.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy stormed the positions of Ukrainian units four times in the vicinity of the settlements of Starytsia, Lyman, Vovchanski Khutory, and Kruhle.
Towards Kupiansk, there were eight attacks by the invaders. The defense forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions in the vicinity of Pishchane, Novoosynove and Kurylivka.
Haluna Minaieva, Mayor of the city of Chuhuiv, says that a russian UAV hit an open area in the central part of Chuguev at around 08:46 on February 21. As a result of the attack, windows in a multi-storey building and a medical facility were damaged. No people were injured.
The city of Kharkiv and 10 settlements of the oblast were subjected to enemy strikes. 5 people were injured as a result of the shelling.
In the village of In Bezruky of Derhachi community, a 70-year-old woman was injured; in the village of Serednii Burluk of Velykyi Burluk community, a 65-year-old and 70-year-old man were injured; in the village of Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, a 46-year-old and 43-year-old man were injured.
Also in the village of Serednii Burluk, two police officers from the White Angels unit were killed during the evacuation.
In the village of Malynivka, rescuers removed the bodies of three people from under the rubble.
The enemy attacked a UAV in Novobavarskyi district of Kharkiv.
The enemy actively used various types of weapons:
▪️4 UAVs of the Geran-2 type;
▪️8 FPV drones;
▪️4 UAVs (type to be determined).
Civil infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:
▪️In Kharkiv, the roof and window glazing in 2 apartment buildings and 1 private house were damaged;
▪️In Bohodukhiv region, a private house was damaged (Ivashky village);
▪️In Kupiansk region, a private house, a granary (Nova Oleksandrivka), a car (Seredenii Burluk village), a private house (Prykolotne village) were damaged;
▪️In Izium region, 2 private houses and a car (Horokhovatka village) were damaged.
The oblast police reports that two men, aged 65 and 70, received explosive injuries, shrapnel wounds, and thermal burns during evacuation near Serednii Burluk on February 20. russian Lancet UAV hits armored police vehicle of White Angel special forces unit: two police officers killed, another law enforcement officer injured.
Andrii Kanashevych, Head of Kupiansk RMA, says that on February 7, a 57-year-old woman was killed as a result of artillery shelling of Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi. This became known on February 20.
The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 120 people. A total of 19,864 people have been registered at the Point since it began operating.
Donetsk oblast
On February 20, there were 1,337 enemy strikes. 10 settlements were under fire: the cities of Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, the villages of Oleksiivo-Druzhkivka, Donetske, Ocheretyne, Sviatohirovka, Serhiivka, Sofiivka. 30 civilian objects were destroyed, including 10 residential buildings.
In Mykolaivka, two people were injured as a result of shelling, 3 houses were destroyed.
A civilian was injured in an attack by enemy drones in Druzhkivka, an infrastructure facility and five civilian cars were damaged.
In Oleksiivo-Druzhkivka, russians wounded a man with a targeted strike from an FPV drone.
An administrative building and a car were damaged by a Lancet UAV strike in the village of Ocheretyne.
In the village of Serhiivka, Andriivka community, 2 civilian cars were damaged as a result of an attack by an enemy FPV drone, and in Kramatorsk – a shopping kiosk.
In Donetsk, 7 private houses were destroyed.
Luhansk oblast
The enemy continues to shell the front-line villages of the oblast with all available weapons. Yesterday, russians used mortars in six cases. They fired from automatic grenade launchers. Five times they tried to hit with drones.
In total, the occupiers made 20 attempts to advance towards eight settlements near Lyman and Sloviansk.
The occupation authorities boast about the report of a threefold increase in the number of mobile communication base stations in the front-line territories of the captured Luhansk region. They credited this achievement to the so-called “Ministry of Digital Development of the lpr.” However, the quality of mobile communication has not improved, because it was not there and is not there. From a mobile phone, you can only call an ambulance, which will arrive with a significant delay, and russian security forces, whom the local population is wary of. All other communication, as before, is carried out via wired communication – home devices, those who have them left, and payphones.
In Starobilsk, another list with the addresses of apartments and houses that the invaders plan to squeeze out for their own use has been published. The owners are given 30 days to appear in the city and reissue documents. The “signs of ownerless property” invented by the russians were noticed directly in Starobilsk, as well as in neighboring Chmyrivka, Pidhorivka, and Shulhinka.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
According to the Regional State Administration, about 90% of Kyiv oblast remains connected even during prolonged power outages. Most mobile operators’ base stations are equipped with generators. Alternative power sources, such as cogeneration plants and generators, continue to be connected and commissioned in communities. Heat generation distribution is being introduced.
The Regional State Administration also reported that as of today, more than 233,000 internally displaced persons have been registered in Kyiv oblast. People from Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv and other oblasts continue to arrive.
Myronivska community plans to build up to 200 modular houses with the necessary infrastructure and create jobs for residents. This is an experimental project that involves the formation of a full-fledged residential neighbourhood with a clear ‘70/30’ settlement model: 70% economically active people who are able to work, and 30% socially vulnerable categories. In this way, housing issues are combined with the economic integration of people into the community.
According to the head of the RMA, Mykola Kalashnyk, Kyiv oblast is transferring ten city diesel buses to the city of Odesa for temporary use. These buses will help transport people while electric transport is being restored. Six buses have already departed for their destination, with the rest to follow in the coming days.
For the sixth time since the start of the full-scale war, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo visited the capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced the meeting with the French delegation. The French partners donated a batch of generators to the city, which are so badly needed by Kyiv in the context of the energy crisis. In addition, Anne Hidalgo visited Borodianka in Kyiv oblast, which suffered significant damage during the russian occupation.
According to the subway administration, a photo exhibition entitled ‘Women in Demining’ was opened at the Zoloti Vorota metro station in the capital. The exhibition consists of 29 photographs depicting the work of female deminers, divers and drone operators. During the event, the women shared their experiences and talked about the difficult decisions, fears and motivations that give them the strength to go to work every day. The project was organised by The HALO Trust in Ukraine.

Zhytomyr oblast
Zhytomyr City Council announced that on 20 February in Zhytomyr, the families of four fallen soldiers were presented with state awards – Orders of Courage III degree (posthumously). The orders were awarded to: soldier Dmytro Babich, soldier Dmytro Matviychuk, senior soldier Roman Vladichenko, and soldier Serhiy Mykhalchuk.
According to Zviahel RMA, on 20 February, a team of employees of JSC Zhytomyroblenergo returned from Kyiv, where they helped restore power supply to high-rise buildings in Darnytskyi district. The buildings were left without power as a result of a series of russian air strikes. The team included three electricians. They worked in semi-darkness with the help of flashlights for 16-18 hours. They restored switchboards, replaced switching devices, circuit breakers, automatic switches, and cables from the switchboard to the entrance.
Sumy oblast
The Prosecutor’s Office reported that at approximately 1:30pm on 21 February, the enemy struck a civilian vehicle with a drone in Shostka community. A 61-year-old man and a 48-year-old female passenger were killed. A 56-year-old female passenger was injured and hospitalised.
Sumy Regional Military Administration informed that during the day on 21 February, russian forces carried out a missile strike on a civilian enterprise in Trostianetsk community. Specialists are inspecting the site and eliminating the consequences of the strike.
In Boromlia community, a russian drone hit a civilian vehicle. The owner of the vehicle was injured and hospitalised.
At around 4am on 21 February, the enemy attacked Sumy community by a guided aerial bomb. Private residential houses in Kovpaka region were destroyed and damaged. An 87-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was hospitalised. A five-year-old child and a 17-year-old girl were also injured and received medical assistance at the scene.

According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, on 20 February, in Krasnopillia community, a 52-year-old man and an 18-year-old girl were injured after an FPV drone struck a civilian vehicle.
Over the course of 20–21 February, russian forces carried out up to 70 attacks on 21 settlements across 13 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 20 hours and 36 minutes during the reporting period.
Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged or destroyed:
- In Seredyna-Buda community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
- In Sumy community, a private residential house was destroyed, while private houses, civilian infrastructure facilities, residential premises and private passenger vehicles were damaged;
- In Krasnopillia community, a private vehicle was damaged;
- In Znob-Novhorod community, a private residential house was damaged;
- In Shalyhyne community, a private residential house was damaged.
Sumy region Police reported that recently, “White Angel” evacuation unit evacuated three residents of Krasnopillia community. The homes of two of them had been damaged as a result of shelling. A 56-year-old man in need of medical assistance was taken to a safe location and handed over to an ambulance team. Separately, a 76-year-old man and his 70-year-old wife were evacuated after their home was damaged by shelling and became uninhabitable.
The Regional Military Administration informed that in Sumy oblast, support for veterans is provided by 99 case management specialists. They assist defenders in adapting to civilian life after returning from the front, obtaining social and medical services, resolving household and legal issues, and also work with their families.
In Sumy, the first phase of a modular town for internally displaced persons has been opened. Two buildings comprising 32 apartments have been commissioned. The housing is fully furnished and equipped with household appliances, taking into account the needs of people with reduced mobility. Project partners include Swedish Red Cross, Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and Sumy Regional Organisation of Ukrainian Red Cross Society.
Chernihiv oblast
The State Emergency Service in Chernihiv oblast reported that on 21 February, a fire broke out in a hangar at a private enterprise in Prylutskyi district as the result of a russian UAV crash. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and prevented its further spread. No casualties were reported.
Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that over the course of 20 February, russian troops attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (two explosions), tube artillery strikes (20 explosions) and FPV drone attacks (16 explosions). Nine settlements came under fire.
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that during the winter period, Belgian Development Agency Enabel delivered 25 diesel block-modular mobile boiler houses to Chernihiv oblast for Chernihiv, Nizhyn and Pryluky, three mobile boiler houses for one of the oblast’s communities, and two stationary solid-fuel boiler houses for medical institutions. The equipment helped ensure the timely start of the heating season despite the critical situation caused by russian shelling.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that the enemy attacked by drones and artillery. Strikes targeted the district centre, as well as Marhanets, Myrove, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovske rural and Pokrovske urban communities.
A 77-year-old man was injured. Seven private houses, three outbuildings, a dormitory and a power line were damaged. As a result of UAV attacks in Slavhorodsk and Mezhova communities, fires broke out. A lyceum, an enterprise, a greenhouse and a workshop were damaged.
Vinnytsia oblast
To mark the anniversary of russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, a memorial event and motor rally were held in Ladyzhyn, Vinnytsia oblast, dedicated to fallen, captured and missing defenders of Ukraine. More than 100 people took part in the event, with around 50 vehicles participating in the motor rally.
Poltava oblast
In Kremenchuk, a museum exhibition was opened in memory of Azov serviceman Yaroslav Otrok, who was killed in Olenivka. On the occasion of his birthday, the partner of serviceman Oleksandr Mazur, together with his mother, donated his personal belongings and poetry to the local history museum.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that a 77-year-old man was killed as a result of a russian attack on Orikhiv.
According to the State Emergency Service, on 20 February, 9 fires broke out across Zaporizhzhia oblast due to russian shelling. 5 people were injured. Private houses, vehicles and warehouse facilities caught fire.
Based on the information provided by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 21 russian attacks on 20 February in Huliaipole and Orikhiv regions. The russian troops attempted to advance near Huliaipole and Zahirne, toward Varvarivka, Olenokostiantynivka, Zaliznychne and Sviatopetrivka, as well as in the areas of Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky and Stepnohirsk.
The City Council informed that 5 apartment buildings in Zaporizhzhia were damaged following yesterday’s russian attack.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 20 February, russian forces carried out 679 strikes on 36 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. In particular, 364 unmanned aerial vehicles of various types (mostly FPV drones) targeted Zaporizhzhia, Komyshuvakha, Velyka Komyshuvatka, Zarichne, Trudove, Novomykolaivka, Kushuhum, Novoolenivka, Barvinivka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Pavlivka, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Mali Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Dorozhnianka, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, Pryluky and Vasynivka.
Mykolaiv oblast
Referring to Mykolaiv RMA, on 20 February, the russian military attacked critical and energy infrastructure facilities in Mykolaiv oblast by Shahed drones. As a result of the attack, 55 settlements in Bashtanka region were left without electricity. Restoration works are ongoing. Also, russian forces launched 6 FPV drone attacks on Ochakiv community. There were no injuries reported.
Odesa oblast
According to Odesa Regional Military Administration, during the night, russian forces carried out a large-scale drone attack on Odesa oblast. Civilian and energy infrastructure facilities were damaged. 2 people were injured: one was hospitalised, while another received medical assistance on site. The attack caused fires and destruction affecting at least 5 private houses, a 4-apartment residential building, several garages and passenger vehicles. In Odesa, a lyceum building was destroyed, and warehouses belonging to an energy company were damaged.

The Operational Command South reported air defence units in southern Ukraine shot down or suppressed 17 Shahed-type and Gerbera drones, including 13 over Odesa oblast.
Kherson oblast
According to Kherson RMA, at approximately 6:35am, russian forces attacked a marshrutka (shuttle bus) in Kherson by a drone. As a result of explosives dropped from the UAV, 4 people were injured. The 71-year-old driver sustained blast injuries, barotrauma and facial wounds. A 62-year-old woman suffered blast injuries, contusions and shrapnel wounds to her arm. A 42-year-old woman was diagnosed with concussion, traumatic brain injury and contusion. A 51-year-old woman sought medical assistance with blast injuries, concussion and an acute stress reaction.

Volyn oblast
The RMA reported that Senior Soldier Bohdan Paliia of the 100th Separate Mechanized Brigade was awarded with the state award of Ukraine – the III degree For Courage Order.
Zakarpattia oblast
The RMA reported that in January, 118 residents of frontline regions found shelter in the oblast.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
The RMA reported that on behalf of the President of Ukraine, a state award – the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) – was presented to Hennadyi Havryliv.
Lviv oblast
During the Winter Story children’s creativity festival in the village of Velikiye Kolodno, Zhovtanetsk community, as well as the charity fair of delicacies prepared by the village housewives, raised over UAH 50,000. The Borutsky family from Zhovtanetsk community, which currently lives in Italy, donated EUR 100 to support the defenders. During several charity fairs held in Zhovtanetsky lyceum, joint efforts raised over UAH 65,000 to support the community’s military personnel.
Rivne oblast
50 children from Zaporizhzhia oblast came to Rivne oblast for health improvement. The trip was part of the Side by Side: United Communities all-Ukrainian initiative.
Ternopil oblast
The Force of Freedom battalion received 4 Autel quadcopters and 4 Mavic 3T from Ternopil community.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council reported that the community has allocated almost UAH 30m for the renovation of medical facilities and the purchase of medical equipment.
Chernivtsi oblast
At Khotyn Resilience Center, children watched cartoons and forgot about the war for a few hours. Watching together in a cozy movie theater became a safe space for children where they could laugh and feel like ordinary children.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Swedish military assistance to Ukraine since February 2022 has already exceeded $9bn.
