War in Ukraine today: latest news, 16 March, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 752th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 16 March, there were 50 combat clashes. 

The enemy launched a total of 1x missile and 43 air strikes, carried out 58 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. Unfortunately, russian terrorist attacks resulted in killed and wounded civilians. Residential private and apartment buildings, as well as other infrastructure were destroyed and damaged. 

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes. No signs of formation of an offensive group were noticed. 

Towards Siverk and Sloboda, russian forces maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia and increases the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Ukrainian units prevented 2 attempts of infiltration by the enemy’s sabotage and reconnaissance groups near Stara Huta and Brusky (Sumy oblast). The adversary launched air strikes in the vicinities of Velyka Pysarivka, Stara Huta, Ryzhivka, Popivka, Yamne, Oleksandrivka, and Luhivka (Sumy oblast). More than 30x settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Klyusy, Yeline, Leonivka, Hremiach (Chernihiv oblast), Ryzhivka, Rozhkovychi, Stepanivka, Sosnivka, Popivka (Sumy oblast), Kozacha Lopan, Luk’yantsi, Zelene, Starytsya, and Hatyshche (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Kupiansk, russian forces conducted no offensives. The invaders fired artillery and mortars at more than 10 settlements, including Synkivka, Ivanivka, and Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Lyman, the Ukrainian defenders repelled 1 assault in the vicinity of Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast). The russian army launched airstrikes in the vicinities of Novoiehorivka (Luhansk oblast), Spirne, Vesele, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 20 settlements, including Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Terny, Yampolivka, Torske, Serebryanka, and Spirne (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Bakhmut, the Ukrainian defenders repelled 4 attacks in the vicinities of Ivanivske, Klishchiivka and east of Chasiv Yar (Donetsk oblast). The enemy launched air strikes in the vicinities of Chasiv Yar and Druzhba (Donetsk oblast). Around 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske, and Niu York (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Avdiivka, the Ukrainian defenders repelled more than 10 attacks in the vicinities of Berdychi, Tonenke, Pervomaiske and Nevelske (Donetsk oblast). The invaders fired artillery and mortars at around 20 settlements, including Novobakhmutivka, Umanske, Netailove, and Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Novopavlivka, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the invaders in the vicinities of Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the invaders, with air support, made 19 attempts to breach Ukrainian defense. The enemy launched airstrikes in the vicinities of Krasnohorivka and Kostyantynivka (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at around 20 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Kostyantynivka, Vuhledar, and Prechystivka (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy conducted 4 attacks on positions of Ukrainian defenders in the vicinity of Robotyne and northwest of Verbove (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Around 15 settlements, including Poltavka, Charivne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka (Zaporizhzhia oblast), were under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Kherson, Odesa operational-strategic group, the enemy conducted 2 unsuccessful assaults on positions of Ukrainian defenders on the left bank of the Dnipro. More than 10 settlements, including Ochakiv (Mykolaiv oblast), Krynky, Tyahynka, Ivanivka, Berehove and the city of Kherson (Kherson oblast), were under artillery and mortar fire. 

On 16 March, the Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 4 buildups of enemy troops, weapons and military equipment.

The Ukrainian rocket troops hit 1 command post, 2 buildups of enemy troops and 1 air defense system.


The Telegraph informs that Ukraine is experiencing such an acute shortage of ammunition that by the end of March, the country may completely run out of air defense missiles. Instead of trying to shoot down four out of five Russian missiles, as is happening now, Ukraine will soon have to limit its air defense systems so as to shoot down only one out of five. This will affect the urban centres of Ukraine.

As reported by Sumy RMA, all residents from 22 border settlements in  oblast. . In total, 4523 people, including 829 children, have already been evacuated from dangerous areas of the region.

Dmytro Lubinets, Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, says that the Ombudsman of Ukraine demands to investigate the activities of the russian Red Cross. He also stressed that the Russian Red Cross participates in military training and training for children, where the ideology of continuing the war against Ukraine is spreading.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that a total of more than 10 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were shelled by the russian federation, specifically Synkivka, Berestove, Kozacha Lopan. Also russians did not conduct any assaults towards Kupiansk during the day.

Svitlana Bilous, Co-organiser of the Two Hearts in Captivity campaign, stated that tables with two chairs appeared on Svobody Square, one of which remained empty. In this way, relatives and friends of missing and captured soldiers tried to draw attention to the problem of their return and search.  

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, said that according to the updated data, the day before the invaders hit Zolochiv with an Iskander missile. In addition, a three-storey hospital building, ambulances, cars and 16 private households were damaged. There were no casualties.

About 20 settlements of Kharkiv oblast suffered enemy artillery and mortar attacks yesterday: Ambarne, Stroivka, Strilecha, Dvorichna, Berestove and others. The enemy launched airstrikes on Baranivka, Zolochiv, Pokaliane, Petropavlivka and Synelnykove. 

At 2:25am, a Shahed UAV hit Kozacha Lopan village, Kharkiv region. A critical infrastructure facility was damaged. There were no casualties.

At 8:27pm,  an outbuilding was on fire as a result of the shelling of Buhaivka village, Chuhuiv region. There were no casualties. 

At 5:40pm, Okhrymivka village, Chuhuiv region, was shelled. Two men aged 48 and 35 were injured as a result of an attack by an enemy UAV.

At 4:20pm, russians fired an Iskander-M ballistic missile at Zolochiv village, Bohodukhiv region. 16 private houses and a hospital building were damaged. A dormitory building, 4 ambulance vehicles and 4 cars were destroyed. There were no casualties. 

At 4:10pm, Synelnykove village, Chuhuiv region, was shelled by a guided aerial bomb. A private house was damaged. There were no casualties.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders repelled 3 enemy attacks near Synkivka and Tabaivka yesterday. 

Combined teams of bomb experts cleared 29.42 hectares of mines and destroyed 333 explosive ordnance. Mine clearance is ongoing.

Over the day, 26 children and their families were evacuated. To date, 129 children have been evacuated from two communities: 33 from Vilkhuvatka and 96 from Velykyi Burluk.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reported that the defence forces repelled 62 russian attacks in the east over 15 March. Most of the fighting was towards Avdiivka and Novopavlivka. The russian military also attacked 15 settlements in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts by aircraft. 

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, informed that  all children were forcibly evacuated from Pivnichnyi Toretsk community. Another 8 children remain in Shcherbynivka and 6 in Toretsk and need to be evacuated. Currently, more than 504,000 people remain in Donetsk oblast. 

Mykola Kovalenko, Head of Ocheretyne Village Civil-Military Administration, confirmed that over a hundred people have been evacuated from the community over the past week. On 16 March, three more people were evacuated from Novoselivka Persha.

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, this morning, russians shelled Novoselivka Persha by heavy artillery, killing a 51-year-old man. Another man was injured and taken to hospital.  

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, Spokeswoman of Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office, reported that the russian military shelled Krasnohorivka by cannon artillery. As a result, a 72-year-old man was injured.

Towards Pokrovsk, a man was injured in Krasnohorivka of Marinka community. In Kurakhove community, the outskirts of Hostre and Kurakhove were shelled.  

Towards Kramatorsk, the night before, russians launched a rocket attack on Sloviansk, damaging an industrial building and 3 trucks. Predtechyne of Kostiantynivka community, Torske and Zarichne of Lyman community were under attack. 

Towards Bakhmut, a house was damaged  in Pivnichne of Toretsk community. 9 private houses were damaged in Chasiv Yar community. 4 houses and a non-residential building were damaged in Siversk. 

In total, russians attacked settlements of Donetsk oblast 18 times over a day. 1171 people, including 198 children, were evacuated from the frontline. 

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, said that 1 civilian was injured in Krasnohorivka yesterday. 

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, russians attacked the contact line by artillery, grenade launchers and tanks yesterday. They made almost 100 attacks. The intensity of the fire is very high. The invaders hit Nevske and Bilohorivka. Nevertheless, food and fuel were brought to the liberated settlements, specifically to Nevske and Novoliubivka. Compact repair kits and bread were delivered to Hrekivka and Makiivka. 

The enemy launched airstrikes on Nadiia and Bilohorivka. Near the latter, the enemy tried to find weaknesses in our defence. 

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk RMA, reported that even before the voting started, the so-called “lpr” outlined the turnout figures for the presidential elections. They claimed that during door-to-door agitation, they allegedly visited more than 611,000 households, which is 94% of the total number. And more than 90% of those polled allegedly agreed to cast their votes. According to the russian Central Election Commission, over 326,000 people took part in the 4 days of early voting in the occupied Luhansk oblast. The early elections were held exclusively in frontline areas and settlements that are difficult to reach, but ballots were somehow delivered there. The figure is close to the number of people in the communities that were under occupation in 2022, including children.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Two Hearts in Captivity action in support of prisoners of war took place today in downtown Kyiv. The event was organised by the families of prisoners of war and missing defenders and the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Kyiv theatres paid tribute to the victims of the russian airstrike on the drama theatre in Mariupol. They recreated the inscription “CHILDREN” in front of the main staircase to their buildings, as it was in Mariupol at the time. The charity performance was also held in the Ivan Franko Theatre.

A monument to the fallen soldiers in the russian-Ukrainian war was installed in the village of Moshchun of Kyiv oblast. The relatives of the deceased soldiers, their comrades-in-arms, representatives of the National Guard, representatives of culture, education, village heads and the local community came to pay tribute. The prayer for the deceased was performed by the chaplains of the National Guard of Ukraine and local clergy.

On 6 April, 2024, a charity tournament in support of veterans will be held, with veterans, professional golfers and Ukrainian entrepreneurs present. The tournament will be held at Kozin Environmental and Recreational Golf Centre as part of the rehabilitation programme for veterans. The programme for veterans has been operating at Kozin since 2015, with more than 1,000 people taking part in the programme since its inception.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to the press service of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service in Zhytomyr oblast, another 58 IDPs from the war zone – including 13 children and 3 people with disabilities – came Zhytomyr oblast by evacuation train. On 16 March, the 51st evacuation train from Donetsk oblast arrived in Berdychiv. 

Zhytomyr joined the action to honour the memory of those killed in the Mariupol Drama Theatre. On 16 March, 2022, a russian aircraft dropped a bomb on the building of the Mariupol Drama Theatre, despite the fact that the townspeople had written “CHILDREN” in large letters on both sides of the theatre.

Sumy oblast

According to Sumy RMA, at night and in the morning, the russian army shelled Sumy oblast 13 times. There were 33 explosions. Velyka Pysarivka, Bilopillia, Esman, Yunakivka and Svesa communities were shelled.

Sumy RMA reported that on 15 March, the russian military fired 69 times at Sumy oblast. There were 378 explosions. Troops shelled Sumy oblast with rockets, drones, mortars and artillery. Myropillia, Yunakivka, Khotin, Bilopillia, Vorozhba, Krasnopillia, Trostianets, Velyka Pysarivka, Konotop, Shalyhyne, Esman, Seredyna-Buda, Svesa and Znob-Novhorodske communities came under fire. 

In Sumy, in a 5-storey building that was hit by a russian missile on the night of 13 March emergency search operations lasted four days. At the Point of Invincibility, 299 people were provided with assistance. Also, as of the morning of 16 March, about 286 m3 of construction waste has been removed. Search operations in the building have been completed. In total, 15 people were injured in the drone strike, three of them killed. Rescuers have dismantled everything they had access to. The body of the girl, who lived on the 5th floor, was not found.

According to JSC Sumyoblenergo, as of 12:00, more than 7,000 customers in Sumy oblast are temporarily without electricity. These are 79 settlements, 14 of which are partially de-energised. 

According to the National Police, the evacuation of residents is currently underway in the Velyka Pysarivka community, Sumy oblast. In just 3 days, 190 people have been evacuated, including 26 children. 

According to the police, 6 residential buildings and a gas pipeline were damaged in Konotop as a result of a missile attack the day before. The shelling on15 March also damaged houses in Velyka Pysarivka, Seredyna-Buda and Vorozhba.

A resident of Bilopillya in Sumy oblast made 5 3D printers himself to print the ammunition for Kalashnikov rifles that the defenders need. Now he is mastering the printing of spare parts for prosthetics and drones.

Chernihiv oblast

According to Halyna Shekhovtsova, Spokeswoman for Chernihiv border guard detachment, on 15 March, russians attacked 4 border communities in Chernihiv oblast, namely Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk and Horodnia. 

In Chernihiv, volunteers of the Let’s Take Back Our History NGO are making plastic devices for quick reloading of weapons for the military, using a 3D printer. The mechanism is placed on the magazine of a rifle and loads it with ammunition with one click. This speeds up the process.

In Chernihiv oblast, a farewell was bid to Yurii Vasiura, Mykola Herasko and Serhii Ruhal, 3 soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that a 75-year-old man and a 77-year-old woman were wounded in Nikopol region as a result of shelling. They were taken to the hospital in moderate condition. In total, the occupiers shelled the area 8 times during the day. They launched 4 kamikaze drones and fired from artillery 4 times. The region’s center and Chervonohryhorivka community were hit. More than 3 dozen private houses, a hangar, garages, cars, a minibus and agricultural machinery, power lines and gas pipelines were damaged, 6 outbuildings were hit, and 2 completely destroyed.

In Dnipro, volunteer Eduard Mahomedaliiev, who was seriously wounded near Bakhmut and lost his leg, presented a photo exhibition titled Rebel Hearts. The main characters in his photos are his brothers-in-arms.

A rally in support of war prisoners was organized by their wives in Dnipro. About a 100 people joined the event. 

Vinnytsia oblast

In Tulchyn community, the wreckage of a russian drone with a 50-kilogram warhead that did not explode was found scattered within a radius of 200 meters.

Vinnytsia is the first city to have a network of municipal recruitment centres. The services are provided by 10 sergeants and officers of the 120th Territorial Defense Brigade with combat experience.

Poltava oblast

In Shcherbani community, students and teachers the local gymnasium are painting shells brought by volunteers from the frontline. These are bullets, cartridges and shell casings. They make souvenirs out of the recruitment cards and plan to sell some of them.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy oblast, the 71st Separate Hunting Ranger Brigade received a vehicle to evacuate the wounded and deliver them to stabilization centres. The vehicle was donated by benefactors from Belgium.

A rally in support of war prisoners was held in Cherkasy. It was organized by the defenders’ families. The participants of the event created a “human chain” and a  performance called Two Hearts in Captivity. They played recordings of letters written by relatives of war prisoners to their loved ones, parents, brothers and sons.

In Cherkasy, the memory of those killed due to the russian air strike on the Drama Theater in Mariupol on 16 March, 2022 was honoured on Teatralna Square.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that on 15 March, the russian military carried out 253 strikes on 11 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Huliaipole, Robotyne, Novodarivka, Malynivka, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Temyrivka, Dolynka, Verbove, and Chervone were shelled 192 times.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in Orikhiv region, the Defence Forces repelled 7 attacks in the areas of Staramaiorsk in Donetsk oblast and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitaliy Kim, Head of Mykolaiv RMA, informed that on 15 March, the russian military attacked coastal settlements 4 times. As a result, residential houses in Dmytrivka village were damaged. There were no casualties or injuries reported.

Also, the DOK-ING MV-10 demining system named Nadiia (Hope) is now operational in Mykolaiv oblast, neutralizing mines and ordnance. It is one of the most powerful systems in the world in its category, designed to operate over large territories. The system is particularly safe to use thanks to its remote control capabilities. This system will enhance the capabilities of Ukrainian forces and allow sappers to demine liberated territories more quickly and safely.

Odesa oblast

Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa RMA, announced a period of mourning for 20 people who were killed in russian attack on 15 March. According to the latest information, 21 people were killed, and 75 residents injured. As of the morning of 16 March, 40 are hospitalized in Odesa medical facilities for ongoing treatment, with 9 in critical condition. This russian attack marked the deadliest attack in Odesa in terms of casualties.

Odesa’s Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov said that the russian missile attack on the city on 15 March caused damage to at least 64 residential buildings belonging to residents, with 4 private houses destroyed. Assessment is ongoing, and an operational headquarters is working on the site. Municipal services are clearing the aftermath, while working alongside charitable organizations and funds to assist in securing windows with film and panels. The process of clearing the consequences of the missile strike is currently underway, with all relevant services engaged.

Yurii Vaskov, Deputy Minister for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development of Ukraine, announced that container transportation will return to the ports of Greater Odesa within 2-3 weeks, followed by ferry services.

Kherson oblast

On 16 March, the russian military attacked Antonivka, injuring an 83-year-old resident.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that on 15 March, the russian military shelled Beryslav, Odradokamyanka, Burhunka, Novovorontsovka, Sadove, Antonivka, and Kherson. 6 private houses and an educational institution were damaged and 2 people injured.

According to the Defense Forces of South Ukraine, on 15 March, the Ukrainian military destroyed a tank, 2 cannons, 5 mortars, a portable radio-electronic warfare complex, the Murom-M video surveillance system, 11 units of armoured vehicles, and 117 russian military personnel on Kherson axis.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the Lesia UA Foundation. Priority areas of cooperation and joint support of the Armed Forces were discussed.

Lutsk City Council, at the request of one of the military units, sent a temporary building for personnel. The modular house has one large room. The room is insulated both outside and inside, electricity is connected and furniture is installed. Everything necessary for the work and temporary stay of the staff is provided.

Zakarpattia oblast

Zakarpattia joined the construction of fortifications in Zaporizhzhia region. The construction of defensive lines continues 24/7. 130 specialists of the Service of Local Highways in Zakarpattia oblast and 25 units of equipment perform work at 13 facilities. In the area for which the oblast is responsible, strongpoints, shelters for equipment, communication passages and an anti-tank ditch are being built.

The Enchanted Land National Park received a Renault Duster from the Zoological Society of Frankfurt and the International Climate Initiative.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that the community sent a batch of FPV drones to a separate unit of Saksan of the State Special Service of Transport.

4 families of fallen soldiers were sent to have a rest in the Carpathians as part of the Care for the Hero’s Family project. 11 participants of the project, including 7 children, are waiting for a week’s rest in tourist complexes of Bukoveli, where comfortable accommodation, quality food and an interesting leisure program are provided.

Lviv oblast

Lviv RMA began to build fortifications in Sumy oblast within the initiative of Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, the essence of which is to build three lines of fortifications along the border and defence line, with a total length of over 2,000 km. Almost half a hundred people are already working on the site. 8 units of equipment were involved in the construction. In addition to the construction of a line of fortifications, special units from Lviv oblast are engaged in demining the territories affected by the Polish occupation.

Students of Zhovtanetsk Gymnasium raised in charity fairs UAH 60,000. The funds will be donated to the needs of servicemen from the community.

A memorial plaque to Ivan Vaskov, gunner-operator of a mechanised bridge, was unveiled on the facade of a local  school in Biskovytsk community. The hero was killed on 6 March 2023 while performing his duties near the settlement of Avdiivka, Donetsk oblast.

Rivne oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, the Return Alive Foundation, the Ukrainian Veterans’ Fund and the Games of the Invincible Ukraine NGO. The oblast is actively creating sports and rehabilitation facilities war veterans. Educational and training sessions for veterans will be held in Rivne oblast.

The Czech Republic allocated 152, 000 to purchase two school buses for Zdovbytsk and Sosnivsk communities, Rivne oblast. Another UAH 280,000 was raised by communities.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that the community sent 50 drones thanks to the budget funds.

Builders from Ternopil oblast are involved in strengthening defence lines in Sumy oblast. The construction of concrete stationary fortifications is in full swing. Military personnel set clear tasks regarding the materials, shape and strength of objects, and defined deadlines. The pace is increasing, equipment and help from other oblasts of Ukraine are being brought in to complete the work within the specified time.

At the request of the commander of the military unit, established at Ternopil, the City Council sent 7 tablets, 3 laser printers, an inkjet printer, 12 laptops and 5 EcoFlow charging stations thanks to the budget funds.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi RMA, Khmelnytskyi City Pathological Center and the City Hospital signed a memorandum of cooperation to unify efforts and ensure proper escorting and preparation of the bodies of killed servicemen for burial, reducing the financial burden on families of the killed and providing social support.

Chernivtsi oblast

Ruslan Zaparaniuk, Head of the RMA, met with Gheorghe Flutur, President of Suceava County Council, and Kathleen Ann Kavalek, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Romania. They discussed prospects for the development of customs infrastructure, in particular checkpoints across the Ukrainian-Romanian border.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Arvidas Anusauskas, Minister of Defense of Lithuania, announced that Greece joined the mine clearance coalition of Ukraine.

Canada sent 10 special vehicles for the disposal of explosive objects to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

The Swedish government reported that the country will send 9 coast guard water scooters to Ukraine.

Ukrainian farmers will receive soybean and sunflower seeds for the spring sowing campaign from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the UN and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine.

Almost 60 UN countries have condemned russia’s attempts to organise illegal presidential “elections” in the occupied territories of Ukraine. The UN also emphasised that holding elections on the territory of another UN member state without its consent is a blatant disregard for the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. According to international law, such elections do not have any legal force. Starting today, Finland will not allow cars with russian licence plates. Such a car can now be subject to customs duty and VAT, after which it must leave the EU. Currently, all Baltic countries have banned the entry of cars with russian licence plates. These bans were also introduced by Poland, Norway and Bulgaria. This week, the first car that violated the ban was already confiscated in Lithuania.
