War in Ukraine today: latest news, 15 September, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 935th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On 15 September, the situation on the front lines remained tense, as Ukrainian Defense Forces continued their efforts to disrupt russian offensive plans and eliminate enemy personnel and equipment. The most intense fighting occurred towards Kurakhove, Pokrovsk, and Lyman. 

There were 100 engagements on the front line.

The russian artillery and mortar fire hit communities in Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy oblasts, including Hrabovske, Vovkivka, Myropillia, Luhivka, Voronivka, and Tymofiivka. There were airstrikes using guided bombs around Yastrybine, Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Basivka, Voronivka, and Nova Sloboda.

Towards Kharkiv, russian forces attempted to storm Ukrainian positions near Vovchansk but were repelled. In the afternoon, russian aircraft launched guided bomb strikes on civilian infrastructure in Kharkiv.

Towards Kupiansk, russians launched 14 attacks near Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Kolisnykivka, Hlushkivka, Kruhliakivka, and Lozova. Five engagements are ongoing, with Ukrainian forces holding their positions firmly.

Towards Lyman, there were 16 russian attacks near Druzheliubivka, Kovalyivka, Tverdokhlibove, Nevske, Makiivka, Terny, and Novosadove. Eleven battles have ended, and two are still ongoing. russian aviation actively targeted Serebrianka Forest, Tverdokhlibove, and Dronivka.

Towards Siversk, russian forces sought weak spots in the Ukrainian defense near Bilohorivka, Verkhnokamianske, Vyiimka, and Ivano-Darivka. Six attacks were repelled, while two engagements continue. Settlements including Siversk, Mykolaivka, and Pereiizne were hit by russian bombs.

Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian units repelled an attack near Stupochky. There were  airstrikes that hit Chasiv Yar with unguided rockets.

Towards Toretsk, 11 attacks occurred near Toretsk, Dachne, Shcherbynivka, and Nelipivka. Ukrainian forces repelled eight attacks, while three engagements continue. russian focuses efforts near Toretsk, using assault and army aviation.

Towards Pokrovsk, russian forces launched 16 attacks, attempting to push Ukrainian defenders from positions in Vozdvyzhenka, Zelenyi Hai, Novotoretske, Hrodivka, Novohrodivka, and Marynivka. Thirteen attacks were repelled, and three engagements are ongoing.

Towards Kurakhove, russian troops attacked 22 times Zhelanne Druhe, Ukrainsk, Selydove, Dolynivka, Heorhiivka, Katerynivka, and Kostiantynivka, with 15 attempts repelled.

Towards Vremivka, six russian attacks occurred near Vodiane, Katerynivka, and Makarivka, with three ongoing battles.

Towards Orikhiv, russian forces unsuccessfully attacked near Novodarivka.

Towards Kherson, four russian assaults took place, with two battles still ongoing.


Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, Air Force Commander, reported that since the full-scale invasion began, Ukraine’s Air Force has destroyed over 8,000 enemy air targets. Ukrainian pilots have conducted over 20,000 combat sorties.

Oleksandr Kamyshin, Advisor to the President’s Office, reported that Ukraine has begun producing 155mm artillery shells. Defense production in Ukraine has doubled under his leadership and is expected to triple by the end of 2024.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, reports that occupiers fired at least 6 unexploded ordnance at Kharkiv and the region during the day. One entrance of the building was destroyed. The fire is on the 9th floor. There are still people under the rubble, three apartments are completely destroyed. At least 1500 windows were damaged. There are dozens of damaged cars.

Mayor Ihor Terekhov says that there were 41 injured in the shelling of Kharkiv. The adults are aged 33 to 86. There were also three children aged 1, 4, 12. 14 people were hospitalised. Three people were in serious condition. The rescue operation is ongoing. In addition to the house that was hit by the russian CAB, at least 12 neighbouring houses were damaged.

The regional SES press service reported in the morning that more than 70 fires are currently being extinguished in Kharkiv oblast, with fires burning in open areas and natural ecosystems. The fires broke out in all regions of the oblast, as well as in Saltivka, Novobavarsky, Nemyshliansky, Kholodnohorsky and Sloboda districts of Kharkiv. At 7:01pm, rescuers localised the fire in a high-rise building in Nemyshliansky district of Kharkiv on an area of 600 square metres.

On 15 September, at approximately 00:13, the enemy hit the ground with an MRLS on the territory of a hospital in Kyiv district of Kharkiv. The glazing of the polyclinic building was damaged. 

On 14 September, at 11:20pm, the enemy fired two MRLSs, a fire broke out in the building of an educational institution, and grass was burning in Kyiv district. There were no casualties.

At 11:03 am, on 14 September, Shyikivka village, Izium region  was shelled. As a result of the hostile shelling, grass on the area of 1.5 hectares and a house were burning. There was no information about the victims.

At 12:22  the village of Pisky-Radkivski, Izium region  was shelled. A 72-year-old woman died as a result of the shelling by a Tornado-S MLRS. A residential building was destroyed, neighbouring houses and a shop were damaged. Two more people were injured: A 43-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman. 

At 13:58 the village of Podoly, Kupiansk region was shelled. As a result of the shelling three outbuildings were burning.

At approximately 4:20pm, the village of Hlushkivka, Kupiansk region was shelled. As a result of the shelling (preliminary, by the KAB), the meadows and a cafe were burning, three residential buildings were also damaged.

At 4:48pm, Novooosynove village, Kupiansk region  was shelled. As a result of the shelling (preliminary RSVF) 2 outbuildings and a truck were burning.

At 02:20am, the village of Horokhovatka, Izium region was shelled, after the enemy shelling the forest litter was burning. There were no reports of casualties.

Towards Kharkiv, three firefights took place in the vicinity of Vovchansk.

Towards Kupyansk, 17 hostile attacks took place over the last day. Defence forces repelled enemy assaults near Kolisnykivka, Stelmakhivka, Lozova and Synkivka.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reports that the Armed Forces repelled 80 attacks towards Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. In total, there were 164 combat engagements on the frontline of the russian-Ukrainian war over the last day.

Towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian troops repelled 41 attacks near Sukha Balka, Vozdvyzhenka, Zelene Pole, Novooleksandrivka, Novotoretske, Hrodivka, Krasny Yar, Novohrodivka, Mykhailivka and Marynivka.

Towards Kurakhove, the Armed Forces repelled 39 attacks near Selidove, Ukraiinsk, Krasnohorivka, Dolyna, Zhelanne Druhe, Heorhiivka, Kostiantynivka, Katerynivka and Zhelanne Pershe.

Donetsk Oblast State Emergency Service reported that rescuers extinguished large-scale fires towards Lyman. At midnight on 15 September, the russian army launched a massive attack on the residential sector of Lyman, where five residential buildings, outbuildings and a garage caught fire as a result of shelling. The fire also destroyed 3 hectares of dry grass and 0.5 hectares of forest floor.

The RMA informs that one person was killed as a result of the shelling of Pokrovsk on 15 September. The russian army hit the community twice today.

DTEK Donetsk Power Grids reported that the north of Donetsk oblast is without electricity due to russian shelling on 15 September. 

Volodymyr Proskunin, Deputy Head of the RMA, says that russian army shelled Mykolaiivka, Donetsk oblast, in the afternoon of 15 September, wounding two people, including a 5-year-old girl. The shelling destroyed the Ukrposhta building, damaged shops, apartment buildings, bank premises, and cut off a power line.

Anastasia Medviedieva, Spokeswoman for the regional prosecutor’s office, informs that on 15 September, a 63-year-old man was wounded in the shelling of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk oblast.

Operational situation in the region as of the morning of 15 September:

Volnovakha region. In Bohoiavlenka of Vuhledar community, 22 houses were destroyed and an enterprise was damaged.

Pokrovsk region. A person was wounded in Kurakhove, private houses, multi-storey buildings and an administrative building were damaged; a five-storey building and private houses were damaged in Hirnyk; garden associations were damaged in Uspenivka. 

Kramatorsk region. In Lyman, 3 houses and 3 non-residential buildings were damaged. Russians dropped 3 bombs on Kostiantynivka, damaging an enterprise, an infrastructure facility and 2 power lines. A house and a car were damaged in Kleban-Byk of the Illinivska community.

Bakhmut region. Two houses were damaged in Siversk.

In total, russians fired 18 times at localities in Donetsk region over the last day. 623 people were evacuated from the frontline, including 129 children.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Military Administration, says that over the past day, russians killed 1 resident of Donetsk oblast in Tsukuryne. Another 3 people in the region were wounded.

Luhansk oblast

Luhansk Regional Military Administration reported that the enemy shelled Makiivka with rocket artillery. They also fired at both Makiivka and Nevske from cannon. russians used 73 unmanned aerial vehicles in the direction of both settlements. 50 of them were fired at Makiivka. The enemy attacked Ukrainian positions near Stelmakhivka, Makiivka, Nevske and Bilohorivka.

Artem Lysohir, Head of Luhansk Military District Administration, reports that on 14 September, a 72-year-old IDP from Nevske, Luhansk oblast, was killed in Pisky-Radkivski, and her 52-year-old relative was wounded by russian army shelling. The wounded woman was hospitalised.

Operators of a Vampire strike bomber of the Pomsta brigade discovered and destroyed two ammunition depots, a fuel and lubricants depot, a truck, an enemy vehicle and a quad bike in the occupied part of Luhansk oblast.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy did not stop attacking Kyiv oblast with drones. The alert lasted all night. Air defence forces were deployed, targets downed, no casualties, no hits to residential or critical infrastructure. Damage was recorded in two districts as a result of the falling debris of the downed targets. In one of the districts, two private houses and an outbuilding were damaged. In the other – the glazing in an apartment building and a car. The owners of the damaged houses will be provided with the necessary assistance.

Kyiv Regional State Administration announced that a European delegation, together with representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science, visited the locations of the route of the social project ‘Kyiv Region. Places of Memory’ as part of the second meeting of the EU-EU/Euratom Joint Committee on Research and Innovation. Together with representatives of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, the guests visited Moshchun, where they learned about the feat of the defenders of Kyiv oblast, visited the car cemetery and the bridge over the Irpin River. 

The RMA also informed that the regional hospital in Boiarka is undergoing major repairs. The reconstruction of the operating theatre into 7 operating theatres is underway. This will increase the number of surgical interventions by 3.5-4 thousand, as well as expand their range. Elevators are planned for renovation. Everything will be done with due regard to the requirements of inclusiveness. The roof of the hospital’s main building is nearing completion. Thanks to the help of philanthropists, the hospital has recently installed high-tech resuscitation equipment for newborns. The cost of the equipment is over UAH 6m.

Zhytomyr oblast

The Department of Family, Youth and Sports of Zhytomyr City Council reported that Zhytomyr athletes won 13 medals at the “Dragon” Boat World Championships, including 8 gold medals. The Dragon Club World Rowing Championships ended in the Italian city of Ravenna. Ukraine was represented by several teams consisting of 39 athletes from Zhytomyr, including 12 veterans who competed in the paradragon class.

Sumy oblast

 Olha Hrakavenko, Head of Nova Slobidka community reported that around 4pm, russia struck near one of the villages in Nova Slobidka community by guided aerial bombs. There were no injuries or damage, though dry vegetation caught fire.

At about 12pm on 15 September, the russian army dropped seven guided aerial bombs on Nova Slobidka community in Sumy Oblast. One of the bombs hit a residential house, but no one was injured.

During night and morning, russians carried out 8 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 9 explosions. The attacks targeted Mykolaivka, Yunakivka, Khotiv, Bilopillia, Berezivka, Shalyhyne and Boromlia communities.

During the day, 14 September, russians carried out 76 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 209 explosions. The attacks targeted Sumy, Yunakivka, Velyka Pysarivka, Krasnopillia, Esman, Bilopillia, Druzhbivka, Nova Slobidka, Seredyna-Buda, Shalyhyne, Khotin and Mykolaivka communities.

Mykolaivka community: an airstrike by GAB (1 explosion).

Khotin community: airstrikes by GAB (4 explosions), as result, two people were injured.

Bilopillia community: airstrikes by GAB (4 explosions) and attacks by UAVs (3 explosions).

Krasnopillia community: an artillery shelling (39 explosions). a mortar fire (11 explosions), attacks by FPV-drones (5 explosions) and by UAVs (4 explosions).

Esman community: airstrikes by FPV-drones (5 explosions) and mortar fire (46 explosions).

Druzhbivka community: mortar fire (4 explosions).

Velyka Pysarivka community: mortar fire (6 explosions), attacks by FPV-drones (13 explosions) and attacks by UAVs (5 explosions).

Seredyna-Buda community: mortar fire (1 explosion).

Sumy community: an airstrike by GAB (4 explosions).

Nova Slobidka community: mortar fire (2 explosions), airstrikes by FPV-drones (7 explosions). 

Shalyhyne community: mortar shelling  (28 explosions), an airstrike by GAB (1 explosion).

Yunakivka community: airstrikes by GAB (2 explosions).

Chernihiv oblast

Throughout the day, russian forces attacked Semenivka and Novhorod-Siverskyi communities, using different types of weapons. There were 10 explosions.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community:

2 explosions (drops from UAVs) towards Mykhalchyna Sloboda;

5 explosions (likely by FPV-drone) towards Hremiach.

Semenivka community:

1 explosion (drops from UAVs) towards Halahanivka.

2 explosions (likely by barrel artillery) towards Prohres.

No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional State Administration, held a meeting with Gabrielius Landsbergis, the Lithuanian Foreign Minister. The main needs of Chernihiv Oblast were discussed, including demining, housing and infrastructure restoration, creating a safe environment, and providing psychological assistance. As part of a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation, a project to build a shelter at the Desnianskyi Lyceum is being implemented.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv RSA, reported that in the past day, 30 households in the Semenivka territorial community of the Novhorod-Siverskyi district caught fire due to shelling. 

In Mykolaivka, more than 30 houses burned down, and three more houses were destroyed in Zaliznyi Mist. According to Serhiy Dedenko, Head of Semenivka community, the fires were caused by continuous shelling. Residents began evacuating Mykolaivka earlier this week, and about 10 people remain in the village.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that Nikopol region was shelled again on 14 September.  Two locals were injured in the night shelling. A 37-year-old man was hospitalised in the surgical department of the hospital. 

The enemy targeted not only the district centre, but also Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities. Four high-rise buildings, a car, a private house, a car wash and a power line were damaged.

In the morning, on 15 September the enemy attacked Nikopol region. In Marhanets, two men aged 48 and 86 were injured in the shelling. The occupiers were targeting the district centre, Marhanets and Myrove communities.

Fires broke out in private houses, 7 houses, 4 outbuildings, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

From 9 to 15 September, 25 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were killed.

Kirovohrad oblast

A charity race was held in Kropyvnytskyi to mark the 150th anniversary of the re-established Kherson State Agrarian and Economic University. The event raised money to buy drones and charging stations for the 192nd Brigade, which is fighting towards  Kherson. 

Poltava oblast

In Poltava, veteran Maksym Varenyk opened a coffee shop with grant money. He received UAH 400,000 for this as part of the  Reintegration of War Veterans project.

Cherkasy oblast

The RUN 4 VICTORY charity race in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine took place in Cherkasy. More than a thousand Cherkasy residents joined the event. The funds raised will be used to support the 118th Brigade of the Cherkasy Tank Corps.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

According to the Southern Defence Forces, on 14 September, Ukrainian fighters in the south eliminated 90 occupiers. They destroyed 6 cannons, 3 mortars, 6 reconnaissance drones, 2 electronic warfare stations and 16 units of armoured vehicles of the russian military.

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Relying on the State Emergency Service of the oblast, on 14 September, 3 fires occurred as a result of russian shelling in Polohy region, with 4 people killed.

As reported by the National Police of the oblast, russian forces carried out 2 airstrikes by KAB bombs on a farm in Huliaipole region.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv RMA, on the morning of 15 September, russians attacked a car and a minibus in Kutsurub community by FPV drones. As a result, 2 people were injured.

Odesa oblast

On the evening of 14 September, the russian military attacked Odesa oblast for the 3rd consecutive time. This time, they were struck by 2 ballistic missiles carrying cluster munitions. As of the morning of 15 September, it was reported that at least 13 houses were damaged.

Kherson oblast

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, reported that on the afternoon of 15 September, russian forces attacked Dniprovskyi district of Kherson by a drone. 2 people were injured and sought medical attention.

According to the RMA, during the night of 15 September, russian forces launched an airstrike on settlements in Beryslav region of Kherson. A 72-year-old woman was hospitalised with blast trauma, injuries to her face, neck, shoulder and arm.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent a DJI Mavic 3T quadcopter, 2 DJI Mavic 3 Pros, an EcoFlow and Starlink charging station to the Military Unit 0281.

Zakarpattia oblast

An open arm wrestling tournament was held in Khust among participants of the war. Veterans, servicemen of the National Guard, territorial defence, anti-aircraft fighters, representatives of veteran areas of the district and many others had the opportunity to communicate, support each other and distract themselves from difficult everyday life. In addition, within the framework of the tournament, participants and guests joined in collecting funds for the needs of the Karpatska Sich division.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

In order to provide psychological and social support to children, Ivano-Frankivsk oblast became a participant in the project on arranging children’s spaces in communities, which is implemented within the framework of the Human Security OSCE program. The project provides for the arrangement of 20 spaces in 6 pilot areas. As part of the initiative, psychologists and social workers will be trained, spaces will be provided with furniture, toys, educational materials, and manuals.

Lviv oblast

In August, Lviv RMA provided over UAH 76m to Ukrainian defenders. The funds were used to buy quadcopters for the 4th Separate Rifle Battalions of the 141th Separate Rifle Brigades; EW means for the 65th Separate Mechanised Brigades, the 710th Guard Brigades of the State Special Transport Service, the 5th Separate Kyiv Assault Brigades of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces; a quadcopter and an anti-drone electronic warfare equipment for the 54th Separate Mechanised Brigade; a night vision monoculars for the 80th Separate Amphibious Assault Brigades; UAVs of various types for the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigades, the 2nd Separate Galician Brigades, the 116th Separate Mechanised Brigades. All funds are allocated within the framework of the Safe Lviv oblast program. Since the beginning of the year, over UAH 612m have been provided to the military thanks to this program.

Among those who returned from captivity are the military from Lviv oblast. Arsen Machuzhenko, defender of Azovstal from Zolochiv region, was captured back in May 2022. Davyd Mahunyk from Novy Rozdol served in the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after King Danylo. He was captured in May 2023.

A charity auction was held in Sambir region within the framework of the Birds of Victory project. It was possible to raise over UAH 6m for military personnel. In addition to the auction, the military band of the 24th Brigade named after King Danylo performed at the event.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast continues to support veterans. Varasky HART has already become the 3rd in a series of events aimed at the social adaptation of defenders. On the territory of Varas Complex Rehabilitation Center, various locations operated in a certain direction, namely, training, employment, veteran business; mental health and psychological support; adaptive sports, rehabilitation. Next, such an action will be held by the regional centre.

Ternopil oblast

Among those released from russian captivity are 2 residents of Ternopil oblast and another IDP man who lived in the oblast. Over the past 2 days, over 150 Ukrainian men and women were exchanged from russian captivity.

Ternopil community sent the REBs for the Kraken special unit. This equipment will help to more effectively block enemy communications and radars on the front line.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The oblast sent 2 mobile maintenance stations to military units of Khmelnytskyi thanks to the RMA, the Avangard CF and the Valiza Dobra public organisation. The 1st car is a powerful truck with a full-fledged workshop and a recreation area. The 2nd vehicle, a pickup truck, is equipped with a variety of repair equipment, a spacious luggage compartment, and if necessary, it can be converted to perform combat missions.

Chernivtsi oblast

Since the beginning of the year, UAH 53m has been allocated from the regional budget for military needs. In general, the RMA, together with communities of the oblast, financed the purchase of necessary equipment, fuel and lubricants, ammunition for fifty-one military units of the Armed Forces, units of Chernivtsi border detachment and the National Guard of Ukraine in the amount of UAH 144m.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Lithuania will finance Ukraine’s long-range capabilities for €10m ,specifically, for a Palianitsa rocket-drone of domestic production. Lithuania has already helped Ukraine by 2% of its own GDP and will try to continue this support at the level of 0.25% of the country’s GDP annually.

Pentagon allocates $1.2bn for the production of AMRAAM missiles for Ukraine. This is a new generation weapon capable of hitting targets at a range of 160 km. It can be used in any weather and is designed to hit targets beyond line of sight.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with the bipartisan delegation of the US Congress. They discussed supporting Ukraine.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the President’s Office, met with the American delegation, which included US congressmen. Further support for Ukraine was discussed.

Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President, met with Pierre Elbron, special representative of the President of France on economic aid and reconstruction of Ukraine. They discussed restoration, provision of financial and humanitarian aid and attraction of private investments in the economy.
