War in Ukraine today: latest news, March 19, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 389th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On March 19, the enemy launched 1 missile and 7 air strikes, as well as 9 MLRS attacks. The russian occupiers cynically attacked a residential building in Vasylivka region and civilian infrastructure in Kamianske (Zaporizhzhia oblast). The russian army also shelled civilian infrastructure in Donetsk oblast. There are dead and wounded, high-rise buildings, private homes, and schools have been damaged. 

There remains a threat of further attacks across Ukraine.

Towards Volyn, Polissia, Siversk, and Sloboda, no significant changes occurred. The enemy shelled the vicinities of settlements of Klyusy, Oleksandrivka (Chernihiv oblast), Kharkivka, Starykove, Volfyne, Stepok (Sumy oblast), Hlyboke, Krasne, Vovchansk, Kolodiazne, Kamianka, Krasne Pershe, Dvorichna, Zapadne, and Kindrashivka (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy continues its attempts to break through the defense of Ukrainian troops. The enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive operations near Novoselivske. The invaders fired artillery at the vicinities of settlements of Vesele, Kupiansk, Krokhmalne, Pishchane, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast), Novoselivske, Nevske, and Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast).

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy continues attempts to capture the city of Bakhmut. Enemy attacks were repelled against Bakhmut, Ivanivske, Bohdanivka, and Hryhorivka. Vasiukivka, Bakhmut, Hryhorivka, Ivanivske, Kostiantynivka, Zalizne, and a number of other settlements in Donetsk oblast came under enemy fire.

Towards Avdiivka, Marinka, Shakhtarske, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive operations towards Kamianka, Avdiivka, Sieverne, Berdychi, and Marinka. Kamianka, Avdiivka, Nevelske, Krasnohorivka, Heorhiivka, Marinka, Vuhledar, Velyka Novosilka, and Neskuchne (Donetsk oblast) came under enemy fire.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy is defending. The vicinities of Huliaipole, Bilohiria, Mala Tokmachka, Kamianske (Zaporizhzhia oblast), Kherson, Mykhailivka, Havrylivka, Dudchany, Ivanivka, and Dniprovske were shelled.

The russian occupiers continue to exert psychological pressure on civilians to force them to obtain russian passports. 

Thus, the counterintelligence regime has been strengthened in the village of Azovske (temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia oblast). The regime implies residents’ active checks for russian citizenship. Those having no russian passport have to put up with additional checks, along with interim custody. 

In addition, the russian occupiers continue looting and taking homes of civilian Ukrainians. In particular, an instruction is being drafted to force illegal alienation of the houses of Ukrainian citizens who left in the village of Strilkove (temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast). The draft is made in the village council, under the lobbying of the village head and backed with the forcibly collected signatures of local deputies. The housing is to be transferred to servicemen of the russian occupation army. 

Ukrainian Air Force launched 1 air strike at the enemy’s anti-aircraft missile system (its type is being finalized), as well as 6 air strikes at buildups of personnel and military equipment, and 1 ammunition depot.

Rocket troops and artillery units hit 1 Tor anti-aircraft missile system of the enemy and 2 buildups of occupiers.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announces a bill on allocating UAH 518 bln for defenses. These funds will be used for payments to the military, the purchase of machinery and equipment. The reserve fund of the state budget will also increase by UAH 19 bln.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy says that sanctions have been imposed against a number of individuals and legal entities. These include 300 individuals. Among them is the president and prime minister of Syria. Sanctions have also been imposed on 141 legal entities.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at least 14 settlements were under russian attack.

russians shelled Tymofiivka village of Zolochiv community. As a result of the attack, three buildings were damaged and a barn destroyed. There were no casualties.

The enemy continue to terrorise civilians, shelling the border settlements of the oblast. Yesterday the invaders attacked at least 13 settlements with artillery. Specifically, Dvorichna, Hrianykivka, Kupiansk, Veterynarne, Vovchansk and others were targeted.

As a result of the attack, a 51-year-old woman received shrapnel wounds in Dvorichna settlement. She was hospitalised in a critical condition. Doctors are fighting for her life. Private buildings and outbuildings were damaged.

Humanitarian de-mining is ongoing. Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service defused 45 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

Serhii Cherevatyi, Spokesman for the Eastern Military Grouping, reported that russia continues to try to put pressure on the positions of the Defence Forces towards Bakhmut and Lyman-Kupiansk. At the same time, there are no signs of a large-scale russian offensive so far, as the aggressor does not have enough power.

He also added that russian troops cannot tactically finish the operation to capture Bakhmut. Active hostilities continue with lots of losses on the russian side.

Bakhmut City Council informed that since March 7, 196 buildings have been damaged in Bakhmut, including 15 apartment and private buildings. As of March 17, 4,615 residential buildings were damaged: 442 apartment buildings (65,6% of all) and 4173 private buildings (26,5% of all). As of March 7, the City Council reported about 4419 destroyed or damaged buildings: 416 apartment and 4002 private buildings.

On March 18, the russian forces struck Kramatorsk from Smerch and Uragan systems with cluster munitions – 2 people were killed and 10 injured. 76 private houses, a high-rise building, 2 communal enterprises, a football arena, a SES unit and Bernatskyi Park were damaged in the city.

Towards Donetsk, the night passed relatively calmly. There were periodic artillery attacks of the Marinka community and 1 attack of Avdiivka; houses on 3 streets were damaged.

Towards Horlivka, Kostiantynivka suffered 3 artillery attacks and 5 volleys from Uragans with cluster munitions – 1 person was killed and 5 injured. 20 private houses, an apartment building, a school and a shop were damaged. Another house was partially destroyed in Mykolaivka. It is known that 2 civilians were wounded in Bakhmut, 3 apartment buildings and 2 private houses damaged. In the Soledar community, 4 buildings in Vasiukivka were damaged.

Towards Lysychansk, Siversk and Serebrianka were shelled – there are damaged houses.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday the russian military killed 3 residents: 2 in Kramatorsk and 1 in Kostiantynivka. Another 18 people were injured. 

The Mariupol City Council informs that russian president vladimir putin’s arrival in occupied Mariupol took place at night, almost without communication with local residents and reported on it after the fact.

Luhansk oblast

Towards Kupiansk and Lyman, the enemy continues its attempts to break through the defenses of our troops. 

There were unsuccessful offensive operations near Kreminna and Dubrova. 

Novoselevske, Nevske and Bilohorivka were shelled.

The Luhansk RMA informs that residents of the so-called ‘LPR’ are forced to accelerate the renunciation of Ukrainian citizenship. In Rubizhne people are able to work exclusively with a Russian passport. Another 250 medical workers from russia are to come to occupied territories.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Explosive shells continue to be found in Kyiv oblast. The Kyiv oblast police reported that local residents found an unexploded anti-tank mine near Hostomel. The State Emergency Service reported the discovery of the remains of a projectile from the Uragan MLRS near the village of Zherevpillya, Vyshhorod region. A year ago, hostilities continued in the area and residents still find various explosive objects in the surrounding forests. The former head of the Kyiv RMA Oleksii Kuleba said that it will take 8-10 years to completely demine Kyiv oblast.

On the Day of Housing and Communal Services Workers, Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko said that since the beginning of the full-scale war, despite the threat to life and limited forces, municipal workers of the capital cleaned and restored the city every day. The supply of water and heat did not stop, roads were maintained and green areas taken care of. He noted that Kyiv survived a year of war thanks to the heroic work of utility workers.

Another tactical medicine training from the NGO “Ukrainian Women’s Guard” (UWG) was held in Kyiv at the Vcentri HUB of the Obolon District. 32 women completed a basic 4-hour first aid course.They learned to apply tourniquets, bandages, tamponade and acquired skills according to the MARCH protocol under the guidance of an experienced tactical medicine instructor. Training on the necessary skills for women is conducted by the UWG twice a month. Most of the time is devoted to practice and all participants receive certificates for completing the course.

The people of Bucha collected and handed over humanitarian aid to the military from Kramatorsk. First necessities, water and goodies for the fighters of the mortar battalion of the 30th brigade were brought by the volunteers of the formation of the Bucha Territorial Community.

The book “I am Here. We are Here. We are All Ukraine. The Phenomenon of Volodymyr Zelenskyy” by Polish journalist Natalia Bryzhko-Zapur was presented in Kyiv. The author noted that in the book she wanted to show the Polish reader how it happened that “Ukraine and russia diverged and went in diametrically different ways.” The presentation took place at the Ukraine – Ukrinform Media Center.

An anniversary charity concert of the Komu Vnyz rock band accompanied by a symphony orchestra will be held in Kyiv on March 27. The event aims to collect UAH 250K for drones for the 214th Separate Special Purpose Battalion of the OPFOR.

Zhytomyr oblast

At least 500 residents of Zhytomyr oblast can improve their qualifications or acquire a new one by receiving a training voucher. As reported by the regional employment service, this year about UAH 9 mln was allocated to finance the vouchers. The list of categories of people who can use the service includes military personnel, ATO participants and IDPs for whom there is no work in their specialty. On the basis of 16 educational institutions, one can master 43 labour professions and 27 specialties.

The Zhytomyr RMA reported that residents of the oblast can take part in the “Share!” campaign to contribute to volunteering culture among young people, popularizing volunteering and blood donation in Zhytomyr oblast. To register for a blood donation, it is enough to fill out a Google form.

Sumy oblast

The Sumy RMA reported that russian forces shelled Shalyhine, Esman, Krasnopillia and Bilopillia communities. In total, 20 mortar hits and 88 AGS shots were recorded.

The enemy continues to attack border communities. Private houses were damaged due to mortar shelling in Seredyno-Buda. The Nova Sloboda community was also under shelling. There were 7 mortar explosions and 41 artillery hits.

The State Environmental Inspection of Sumy oblast reported that since the beginning of the full-scale war, they have calculated almost UAH 1.5 billion in environmental damages due to pollution of water bodies in Sumy oblast, caused by the armed aggression of the russian federation. Damages were calculated for destruction of bridges and littering of 9 ecological objects.

The implementation of the Government program “Energy Savings – LED Lamps for Ukraine” continues in Sumy oblast due to the support of the European Union. Residents of the oblast have exchanged more than 450K old incandescent lamps for new energy-saving ones. The exchange is ongoing.

Chernihiv oblast

The SBGS reported that the Snovsk community of Chernihiv oblast came under enemy shelling. There were 11 hits from 120 mm mortars.

The ‘North’ Operational Command reported that the enemy continues to shell the border areas of Chernihiv oblast. The enemy fired 10 self-propelled gun hits in Kamianska Sloboda and 6 mortar ones in Khrinivka.

Vyacheslav Chaus, Head of the Chernihiv RMA, said that 34 settlements in Chernihiv oblast are suffering from russian shelling. According to him, 11K people live there, and 1,500 have been evacuated. According to the results of the meeting with Serhii Naev, Commander of the Joint Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, specific measures were determined to protect local residents from enemy attacks.

The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reported that starting from November 2022, the pyrotechnicians of the Chernihiv oblast perform humanitarian demining missions in the de-occupied territories. In particular, sappers worked in Kharkiv, Donetsk and Mykolaiv oblasts and now continue to clear the territories from russian ammunition. Pyrotechnicians have examined 36.15 hectares of territory, discovered and destroyed almost 500 munitions.

The “Together to Victory” charity fair and a concert by singer Dima Volkanov took place at the Center for Culture and Leisure of the Borzna City Council. Before the start of the concert, the guests watched a film dedicated to the memory of the fallen compatriots, which touched every heart. The funds collected at the event will be used to help the Armed Forces.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council,  the Velyka Mykhailivka community in Synelnykove region was shelled from heavy artillery. 

Mayor Serhii Reznik said that rescuers have finished eliminating the consequences of a drone attack in Novomoskovsk, Dnipropetrovsk oblast. 

In Dnipro, the military is being trained to operate drones. The weekly course for them is conducted by local manufacturers of Chaklun unmanned aircraft complexes. The fighters will learn about the model design and its operation, as well as learn to perform take-off and landing, correctly build a mission and be able to counteract russian radio-electronic warfare.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​It recently became known about the death of twelve defenders from Vinnytsia.

Kirovohrad oblast

On the territory of the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the team of the charity fund Caritas Kropyvnytskyi together with the parish organized a charity event to support the victims of the earthquake in Turkey. Volunteers also distributed humanitarian kits and free clothes to Ukrainians affected by russian aggression.

Poltava oblast

Dmytro Lunin, Head of the Poltava RMA, reported that soldiers from Poltava were given a pickup truck and four Starlinks. A socially responsible business purchased a car. The car will be sent to the front to transport the necessary cargo, and evacuate the wounded.

Training for rescuers was organized in the Poltava community. They launch drones in the middle of the field, search for certain objects and record their coordinates.

Cherkasy oblast

Iryna Nazarok,  Spokeswoman of the Regional Center of Emergency Medical Assistance and Disaster Medicine, reported that Cherkasy medics transported 11 patients in serious condition from dangerous regions by Sofia ambulances.

311 families of internally displaced persons living in the Chornobai Territorial Community received humanitarian aid from benefactors.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Today, the enemy shelled a residential building in Kamianske, Vasylivka region using Grad MLRS. Three people were killed, two more injured.

The situation towards Zaporizhzhia hasn’t changed significantly. The enemy concentrates its main efforts on holding the occupied borders. On March 18, the enemy launched 77 attacks on the positions of Ukrainian defenders, using tank weapons, rocket and barrel artillery along the entire contact line.

The occupiers shelled Orikhiv, Charivne, Olhivske, Malynivka, Huliaipilske, Chervone, Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Bilohiria, Poltavka, Kamianske, and Plavni. The police received 10 reports about the destruction of houses (apartments) and infrastructure objects as a result of shelling by russian military personnel.

The russian occupiers continue to use civilian institutions on the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia oblast for their own needs. Thus, the enemy is using a school building in Polohy region as a field hospital with 50 beds. In this way, the occupiers are trying to speed up the return of wounded personnel to combat duty.

Ivan Fedorov, mayor of Melitopol, announced that Ukrainian defenders destroyed two Tor-M2 russian anti-aircraft missile complexes in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Drones were used to destroy the targets. 

Mykolaiv oblast

On March 18, the enemy shelled the water area of the Ochakiv community with mortars and barrel artillery. There was no damage to the infrastructure and no casualties. The Kutsurub community was also shelled from artillery. There are no casualties. The destruction is being clarified.

According to the ‘South’ Operational Command, the occupiers intensified shelling with mortars and barrel artillery on the water area of the Dnipro-Buh estuary while the grain agreement regarding terms and Mykolaiv ports are being reviewed.

Mykolaiv oblast became the first region where humanitarian demining of agricultural lands began. As of today, significant forces from the engineering and sapper units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, pyrotechnic units of the State Emergency Service, and foreign operators have been engaged. 11 demining groups from the Ministry of Defense  are working in the region. 9 more groups will join them starting next week. There are 7 groups working from the State Emergency Service in the region. According to preliminary estimates, in 9 oblasts of Ukraine (Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Chernihiv, and Cherkasy) more than 470,854 hectares of agricultural lands require inspection and, if necessary, demining.

The charity concert “With Ukraine in the Heart” was held in the village of Mishkovo-Pohorilove in support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It was the first event since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by russian troops. A charity fair was placed next to the stage. It was possible to buy goodies, shopping bags decorated with patriotic drawings, jewelry, souvenirs, etc. More than UAh 81 K was fundrised during the charity concert. The money will be transferred for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Odesa oblast

As of March 19, there are 9 enemy ships on combat duty in the Black Sea. There are 2 Kalibr cruise missile carriers with a total volley of up to 16 missiles among them. 1 enemy ship is on combat duty in the Sea of Azov. There are up to 7 enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, including 3 Kalibr carriers with a total salvo of up to 20 missiles.

Kherson oblast

This afternoon, russian artillery hit Bilozirka. The enemy purposefully attacked a residential building. One woman was wounded. She was hospitalized.

On March 18, russian invaders attacked peaceful settlements in Kherson oblast 53 times. The enemy fired 269 shells from mortars, MLRS, artillery, tanks, and drones. Residential quarters of Kherson were shelled 5 times by the russian military. Enemy shells hit private and apartment buildings. Two people were injured.

On the evening of March 18, a pair of enemy Su-35 fighters struck Berislav region with two Kh-59 missiles. One missile was destroyed in the air, the other hit agricultural land. There are no losses and destruction.

Head of the RVA, Volodymyr Litvinov, announced that ane person was injured in the village of Kalynivka, Beryslav region, as a result of an explosion of an unknown object.

Ukrainian rocket Forces and artillery units continue combat work against carefully checked objects and enemy bases. Ukrainian defenders destroyed a Strela-10 anti-aircraft missile complex, a mobile reconnaissance and control point, a T-62 tank and 2 artillery installations.

Three Kherson hospitals received anesthesia and breathing stations from the Ministry of Health. In addition, one of the medical facilities operating in the de-occupied part of Kherson oblast will receive similar equipment in the next few days.

“Together!” Association Movement representatives visited Kherson and the villages of the liberated Kherson oblast. Volunteers brought more than one and a half tons of gifts and humanitarian aid to people. Volunteers visited Kherson, Velyka Oleksandrivka, Orlove, Borozenske, Nadezhdivka, and Myroliubivka. More than 2K people came to concerts performed by Ukrainian performers. Hairdressers, massage therapists, and eyebrow specialists served free of charge anyone who wished.

Volyn oblast

The RMA reported that two cars were sent to the Volyn border detachment thanks to the CF “Kindness”.

Zakarpattia oblast

Another 11 local enterprises were recognized as critically important for the functioning of the Zakarpattia economy. Business entities will soon be able to submit documents and lists for the reservation of 50% of their conscripted employees.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ruslan Martsinkiv, Mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, announced that the 78th Territorial Defense Battalion received building materials (canvas, door blocks and handles, construction staples, nails, wire, self-tapping screws, film, sewer pipes, corrugated iron, OSB-3 plates, batteries), computer equipment and means of ensuring communication (tablets, laptops, printers, ink, inverters, Starlinks) from the city.

Lviv oblast

The Maltese aid service continues to provide assistance in Lviv oblast. During the year, psychologists of the service provided free support to over 20K people. In particular, IDPs and local residents received help.

In the Zolochiv region, 10 people with disabilities and single people from Zadviriansk, Starostyn region received food packages from the Zolochiv Regional Organization of the Red Cross of Ukraine. The sets contain cereals, canned goods, flour, sugar, oil, etc.

Rivne oblast

In Korka, social workers were instructed in first aid. The event was organized by the Red Cross Society of Ukraine.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that generators, fire extinguishers, specialized backpacks and medical supplies were sent to servicemen from the newly created rifle battalion and soldiers from the Rapid Action Corps.

The city council of Ternopil reported that during a recent trip to the front lines, the medics of the Ternopil City Dental Polyclinic treated 140 soldiers.

The RMA reported that men and women of the Offensive Guard in Ternopil oblast have completed the first stage of training in basic military training and tactical medicine.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The UN Refugee Agency has resumed registration for cash assistance for IDPs and war-affected persons. People who have not previously received payments from international organizations and whose income is less than UAH 5,4K per month can count on it. Priority is given to the most vulnerable groups of residents.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of the International Organization for Migration (IOM). They discussed the terms of cooperation, implementation of current projects that the organization is engaged in, and provision of humanitarian aid to the communities of Bukovyna.

The RMA reported that the association of Chernivtsi entrepreneurs sent 25 cars to the military.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Anita Anand, Defense Minister of Canada, announced that her country sent a batch of military aid to Ukraine, which included armored vehicles. She added that Canada will support Ukraine as long as it is needed.

John Kirby, Coordinator of the US National Security Council, stated that the country will deliver a new military aid package in the coming days that will be vital to Ukraine’s success in the coming weeks and months.

Marco Buschmann, German Justice Minister, said that they are ready to arrest putin if he comes to Germany. He expects the International Criminal Court to promptly contact Interpol, as well as state parties, to ask them to comply with the warrant.

The US resumed deportations to russia. In particular, a russian man who sought asylum because he was afraid of mobilization in his homeland was recently deported. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it is conducting the deportation in accordance with US guidelines.

Ukrainians in Prague gathered under the UN building with the demand to strengthen sanctions against the russian federation and exclude the country from the Security Council. Activists also called on the organization to demand from the russian federation access to prisoners, in particular to the defenders of Azovstal.
