War in Ukraine today: latest news, July 30, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 522th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy launched 4 missiles and 34 air strikes. They used 4x strike drones of the “Shahed-136” type, all of them were destroyed. The russian federation also launched 37 MRLS attacks on Ukrainian cities and Ukrainian Armed Forces. There are victims among the civilians as well as some houses destroyed.

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile and air strikes.

There were 20 combat clashes.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes. There are no signs of  offensive group formation. 

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy shelled with mortar and artillery over 25 settlements, notably Buchki, Hremiach, Chernihiv oblast; Porohony, Sytne, Sumy oblast and Veterinary, Kozacha Lopan, Vovchansk, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, our soldiers are firmly holding the defense, successfully repelling enemy attacks east of Berestovo, Kharkiv oblast. Figolivka, Novomlynsk, Zapadne, Kindrashivka and Kupiansk, Kharkiv oblast got under enemy artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Lyman, the enemy carried out airstrikes at Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast, and Ivanivka, Serebrianka, and Spirnyi in Donetsk Oblast. Nevske, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast and Torske, Spirne, Berestov of Donetsk oblast were shelled with artillery.

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy carried out airstrikes at Klischiivka, Bila Hora and Kostiantynivka. Over 15 settlements, including Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bilokuzminivka, Hryhorivka, Ivanivske, Klischiivka and Kostiantynivka of the Donetsk oblast, were shelled with artillery.

Towards Avdiivka, the occupiers launched an airstrike at Avdiivka. Over 10 settlements, including Keramik, Avdiivka, Vodiane, and Karlivka, Donetsk oblast, were shelled with artillery.

Towards Mariinka, the defense forces continue to hold back the advance of russian troops in the area of the towns of Mariinka and Pobieda, Donetsk oblast. The enemy shelled over 10 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, Heorhiivka, Hostre, and Katerynivka.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy launched an air strike at Staromaiorsky. Russians shelled Blahodatne, Vuhledar and Prechistivka, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy is concentrating its main efforts on preventing the further advance of our troops. Russians carried out an airstrike at Zmiivka, Kherson oblast. Over 25 settlements, including Levadne, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Bilohiria and Kamianske, Zaporizhzhia oblast, were shelled with artillery; Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk oblast; Beryslav, Vesele, Antonivka, Berehove and Veletenske, Kherson oblast. 

The Defense Forces of Ukraine continue offensive operations towards Melitopol and Berdiansk, and are equipping captured positions.

Due to the successful military operations of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, the losses of the russian occupation forces, who physically do not have time to remove the dead from local morgues, has increased significantly. In Svatove, Luhansk oblast, the territory of the city morgue is overflowing with the bodies of dead russians. The occupiers have not taken them away for almost a week. There is an unbearable corpse smell in the city.

In Starobilsk, the invaders forcibly transferred part of the civilian medical personnel from local medical facilities to the so-called military hospitals to provide medical aid to the wounded occupiers. As a result, local elderly residents complain about the lack of an opportunity to receive at least some kind of treatment.

The Ukrainian Air Force conducted 7 strikes on enemy manpower, weapons and military equipment concentrations.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces destroyed 4 reconnaissance UAVs of operational-tactical level.

The Ukrainian missile and artillery units hit the enemy anti-air defense system, 8 artillery units at firing positions, 2 stations of electronic warfare, as well as 2 of manpower concentration.


According to Ivan Fedorov, mayor of Melitopol, russia deported 250 children from the temporarily occupied territories. Another thousand of minors are in the so-called recreation camps.

Head of Donetsk RMA, Pavlo Kyrylenko, reported that  a project on production of kamikaze drones for the Armed Forces was launched in Donetsk oblast. The first batch of drones has already been delivered to special forces.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Serhii Cherevatyi, Spokesman of the Eastern Group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that towards Lyman-Kupiansk, the invaders attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops 480 times using artillery of various calibres and types. Yesterday, 35 invaders were killed and 65 injured and 5 taken prisoner. Enemy tank, armoured personnel carrier and two ammunition depots were destroyed.

Kharkiv oblast

According to the morning report of the General Staff, at least 12 settlements were under russian attack yesterday.

Yesterday, the enemy shelled settlements in Kharkiv, Bohodukhiv, Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions with artillery, mortars and other weapons. Specifically, Udy, Kozacha Lopan, Okhrimivka, Tykhe, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Borysivka, Kupiansk, Dvorichna, Zapadne and other settlements were targeted. There was damage to private buildings and outbuildings.

Mine clearance is ongoing. Yesterday, pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service defused 87 explosive ordnance.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv Regional Military Administration said that Tymofiivka village was shelled with artillery in the evening of 29 July. On the morning of 30 July, russian troops attacked the village from drones for the first time during the full-scale invasion.

Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that an 84-year-old resident of Vovchansk was injured as a result of russian mortar attacks on the morning of 30 July.

Donetsk oblast

Donetsk Regional Military Administration reported that towards Volnovakha, three buildings were damaged in Novoukrainka. Prechystivka and Vuhledar were under attack.

Towards Horlivka, 3 buildings in Toretsk were damaged. And russians dropped a FAB-500 aerial bomb on Niu-York, without any casualties. Two buildings were damaged in Predtechyne of Kostiantynivka community. A building and an outbuilding were damaged in Chasiv Yar community.

Towards Lysychansk, there were 5 attacks on Lyman community yesterday.

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, Spokeswoman of Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office informed that towards Donetsk, Krasnohorivka of Marinka community was shelled overnight. In the morning there was a massive shelling of Avdiivka. A shell hit the administrative building and an aerial bomb was dropped on the city in the evening.

In the morning, the occupiers once again struck Avdiivka with a massive attack and dropped a half-tonne bomb on New York. In total, 6 towns and villages in the Donetsk region came under Russian fire over the past 24 hours.

Oleksii Roslov, Head of Kostiantynivka City Military Administration, reported to Suspilne that in the afternoon, russian invaders struck Kostiantynivka with cluster munitions.

Donetsk Police reported that on the anniversary of the liberation of Avdiivka from russian invaders, Bili Yanholy detachment raised the flag of Ukraine near the frontline position of Ukrainian soldiers.

67 hospitals are operating in Donetsk oblast. To ensure their operation, more than 400 generators have been installed with enough capacity to keep the facilities running in case of a long-term power blackout.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, russians tried to attack near Novoiehorivka, Svatove region, and Bilohorivka. They have a powerful grouping of airborne and infantry units in this area, not to mention a number of private military groups. But none of these attempts have brought them any results. Each assault is accompanied by heavy artillery support, this time, Nevske and Bilohorivka withstood massive attacks.

Luhansk RMA said that checks of those wishing to enter the city have been significantly intensified around Rubizhne.

Luhansk Regional Military Administration added that in Svatove, for the third time in a year, the invaders are demanding that people document their ownership of real estate. In case of non-confirmation, they threaten to break into the house and move in russian soldiers. The dominance of russians is the reason for the search for empty houses and apartments as they are counting on those who left after the previous inspection and those who do not regularly appear in Svatove.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

On July 29, demonstrations were held near the Russian Embassy in Kyiv to mark the anniversary of the strike on the colony in occupied Olenivka. The activists set up bunk beds near the embassy, similar to those on which the soldiers slept during the attack and staged a theatrical scene about the night of the tragedy. Last year, on this day, russian media reported on the shelling of a penal colony in Olenivka, Donetsk oblast, which killed more than 50 Ukrainian POWs. According to Ukraine’s General Staff, the colony was shelled by russians, probably to hide the evidence of torture and murder of prisoners. The UN reported that russia did not approve requests for access to visit the site of the attack.

Ruslan Kravchenko, the head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that more than 12,500 objects destroyed as a result of russian aggression have already been restored in Kyiv oblast. Most of them are apartment buildings and private housing. The total number of damaged objects is over 27 thousand.

On June 29, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard (UWG) held a training for women on “Financial Competence” and a transformational game “Cash Flow” in Kyiv. The training was held as part of the project “Self-employment and economic security of women in Ukraine during martial law”. The event for UWG women was hosted by Oleksandra Yuzyk, a financial competence trainer and Cash Flow game host with 15 years of experience in corporate finance and sales.

Irpin mayor Oleksandr Markushyn announced that the Finnish company Temet is developing a bomb shelter project for the Mriya Lyceum in Irpin. During an air raid, the facility will be used as a bomb shelter, and at other times as a gym. The bomb shelter will be equipped with a full-fledged mini-football, volleyball and basketball court.

This week, rescuers, the military and the staff of a company in Vyshgorod region jointly practiced eliminating the consequences of simulated shelling. According to the Kyiv Region State Emergency Service, professionals extinguished a mock fire and evacuated the victim, while the military trained the company’s employees on how to safely deal with explosive devices that remain in the de-occupied territories of the region.

A mural dedicated to serviceman Oleksiy Bondarev, call sign Tefal, was revealed in the Syrets district of Kyiv. He went to war on February 25, 2022, defended Chernihiv oblast, and then fought alongside his comrades from the 58th Brigade in the most dangerous spots and was killed in action during the spring in Luhansk oblast. The mural was created on the house where 42-year-old Oleksiy used to live.

Zhytomyr oblast

Women IDPs living in Zhytomyr and the oblast are invited to participate in a project to promote self-employment and micro-entrepreneurship. The Zhytomyr Community Foundation reported that a two-day business planning training will be held in August-September, where all participants will receive consulting support. The project is open to IDP women and female representatives of vulnerable groups from local communities aged 18 to 60.

On July 29, a charity bike ride “No Limits to Childhood” took place in Zhytomyr. Volunteers, rescuers, athletes, law enforcement officers, and concerned citizens of Zhytomyr joined the ride to raise funds to buy sports equipment for children from a large IDP family who now live in Berdychiv.

Sumy oblast

According to Sumy Military Administration, the enemy launched 25 attacks yesterday. 17 settlements in 9 territorial communities were under enemy fire: Sumy, Krasnopillia, Bilopillya, Yunakivka, Myropillya, Shalyhyne, Esman, Seredyno-Buda, and Nova Sloboda. The enemy fired from mortars, self-propelled artillery systems, MRLS and grenade launchers. The shelling damaged private houses, outbuildings, and power lines.

On the evening of July 29, the enemy launched a missile attack on an educational institution in Sumy. The attack killed two people and wounded 20. The 4-storey building was heavily affected – one of the buildings of the educational institution was destroyed, while others were damaged. The detonation wave also damaged two dormitories, nearby buildings and the Church of the Presentation of the Cross. The fire, which covered a large area, was extinguished by the morning of July 30. Rescue and evacuation efforts are ongoing, and an emergency response headquarters has been set up.

The enemy launched 14 attacks at night and in the morning. There were 83 explosions. 12 settlements in 6 territorial communities came under fire: Krasnopillia, Khotyn, Shalyhine, Seredyno-Buda, Hlukhiv, and Putyvl. The attacks were carried out with mortars, artillery and MLRS.

Children from Sumy oblast will spend their vacation in Germany. As reported by the Sumy Regional Military Administration, 27 children from socially disadvantaged categories went to Rheinsberg for a holiday. These are children of fallen Ukrainian defenders, orphans, children with disabilities, children from low-income and large families. This trip was made possible thanks to the National Social Service.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service reported that over the past 24 hours, russians fired twelve times at the border of Chernihiv oblast from their territory. Overall, there were 190 strikes from mortars, cannon and rocket artillery. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk communities were under fire.

Koryukivka district administration reported that a residential building and a power line were damaged as a result of an enemy strike on Snovsk community. The settlement is partially without electricity.

An open beach rugby tournament was held on the city beach in Chernihiv to honor the memory of the president of the Chernihiv Oblast Rugby Federation. Oleksiy Dyahovets was supposed to take part in the tournament as the captain of one of the teams, but on July 14, he was killed in Kherson region while on a combat mission. Before joining the army, Oleksiy was a police officer and a professional rugby player.

The third modular bridge manufactured by a French company for Ukraine is being installed in Chernihiv oblast. The first two were installed in February 2023, the Regional Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service reported. Currently, span modules are being installed at the third facility, as it took a while for the water level in the Snov River to drop after the floods to assemble it.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, the Air Force shot down 2 enemy Shaheds over Kryvyi Rih region at night. The falling wreckage caused a fire at an agricultural enterprise. The russians shelled Nikopol region 4 times. They fired from artillery at Nikopol, Marhanets, and Myrove communities. 

Head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA Serhii Lysak announced that the number of casualties from the missile strike on Dnipro has increased to 10. A 14-year-old boy, like two other minors, sustained blast injuries. 

The ‘Eastern Front’ film by documentary filmmakers from Dnipro was screened in 16 countries around the world. ‘Eastern Front’ is a story that was filmed from 24 February 2022 to September 2022. The film features ordinary people who have gone to defend their country not for the first time as well as the rear, where their families live.

A charity race in memory of National Guard officer Mykhailo Zholobov was held in Kryvyi Rih. More than 170 participants ran 5 and 10 kilometres. The funds raised will be donated to servicemen released from captivity who need medical treatment.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​ UAH 33,820 was raised for the defenders of Ukraine during the screening of the film “Felix” in the city of Hnivan, Vinnytsia oblast. All the money will be handed over to the comrades of the defender whose story is featured in the film.

The soldiers of the 120th Brigade received help from Vinnytsia residents. The gadgets were purchased for the military within the framework of the charity marathon Million for the Armed Forces from Vinnytsia residents.

Poltava oblast

Poltava oblast is supporting the village of Pravdyne in Kherson oblast within the framework of the ‘Side by Side’ programme. They plan to repair 380 damaged and 44 destroyed houses. 

The team of the National Humanitarian Aid Agency ZDOROVI together with Nova Poshta Humanitarian delivered more than 20 tonnes of medical supplies to Kremenchuk.

Chairman of the Poltava Regional Council, Oleksandr Bilenkyi, reported that SKOT R3M amphibious armoured personnel carrier purchased for the Poltava separate territorial defence brigade has been delivered to Ukraine. 

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy oblast, 6 healthcare facilities have implemented rehabilitation packages. Meanwhile, a rehabilitation centre for the military is being set up at the regional hospital for veterans.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

The RMA reported that on July 29, the russian army fired 77 times at the settlements of Zaporizhzhia oblast. 73 artillery attacks were carried out on the territory of Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Levadne, Novodarivka, Bilohiria, Malynivka, Kamianske, Stepove, and other frontline villages. Novoandriivka and Pavlivka were hit by enemy UAVs, and Huliaipole was struck by aircraft once again.  31 reports were filed about the destruction of residential buildings and infrastructure.

A 32-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man were killed in a missile strike military on the regional centre. Two women, aged 36 and 55, were hospitalised with minor injuries.  According to the secretary of the city council, Anatolii Kurtiev, windows in 13 high-rise buildings were shattered.

Raphael Grossi, IAEA Director General  reported that the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP has completed the planned transition of power unit 5 to a cold shutdown and simultaneously transferred power unit 4 to a hot shutdown. 

A new shelter for IDPs, particularly mothers with children, has been opened in Zaporizhzhia. It is equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and beds. It can accommodate 12 people at a time.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration,  on 29 July, the russian army struck Mykolaiv oblast three times. The Ochakiv community of the region was affected. At 11:04 and 11:39, the enemy fired artillery shells at the town of Ochakiv in the Ochakiv community. There were no casualties. At 10:10, the russian military fired artillery at the water area of the Ochakiv community. There were no casualties.

South Air Command  reported that on 29 July, over Mykolaiv oblast, Air Defence Forces and means destroyed a russian reconnaissance UAV of the Merlin-BP type.

Vitaliy Kim, Head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that  as of 30 July, farmers in Mykolaiv oblast continue to sow fields and harvest crops despite the mine danger. Farmers are switching to industrial crops that can be used domestically. The share of domestic consumption will increase by about 20%, while exports will decrease by 20%.

Odesa oblast

South  Operational Command reported for the third time in a month, the russian army attacked Zmeinyi Island in the Black Sea. Zmeinyi was attacked by tactical aircraft, throwing two unidentified bombs near the island.

On 29 July, the Dumskaya newspaper, citing its own sources in law enforcement, reported that several sabotage attempts were being prepared on the railway lines in Odesa oblast. Several attempts to blow up the railway tracks were made today by unknown saboteurs in Odesa, probably by russian agents. In one place, the explosive device planted did not detonate, while in the other, there is no information on the damage caused.

The Odesa Zoo hosted a charity event in support of the Mykola Kulish Kherson Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre, “Invincible, Odesa-Kherson, Art Offensive”. During the meeting, the theatre received gifts, including paintings and books. The zoo also presented an aquarium for the turtle Melpomene.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that today, a 33-year-old woman was wounded in an attack by russian troops on a house in the village of Novodmitrivka in Kherson oblast. She was hospitalised in moderate condition. 

According to the prosecutor’s office, russian troops had previously shelled the village in the Bilozerska community with MLRS. It happened around 11.10 am. A woman was injured and at least six houses were damaged. 

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that over the past day, on 29 July, russian troops attacked Kherson oblast 69 times. They used 313 shells in the region and 44 in the city. Two people were injured.

On 29 July, the russian army fired 11 shells at the Kherson community. The oblast centre, Naddnipryanske, Molodizhne, Antonivka, Sadove, Zelenivka and Zymivnyk came under fire. There were no casualties.

The russian army attacked Beryslav. A 55-year-old man, who was in the yard of his house during the shelling, sustained a leg injury.

Hospital of Zolota Balka received an ambulance. The humanitarian aid was provided by volunteers from the Aid Ship charity. This will allow doctors to provide care to patients who cannot get to the hospital on their own.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council will allocate all funds from the budget overrun for the first half of 2023 for the needs of the military. In addition, employees of the city council, communal enterprises and organizations have been donating their daily earnings to support the military since March. Over UAH 20 million has already been collected. Purchased clothes, body armor, over 40 cars, etc.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest humanitarian aid center gave out aid to IDPs, namely: 60 packages with necessary things for children under 2 years old; 100 grocery sets; 60 hygiene kits, clothes, bed linen and dishes (a total of 3K units were issued). Humanitarian aid was provided in partnership with PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help eV and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

In Ivano-Frankivsk, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, held a meeting of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. They discussed ensuring the stability of critical infrastructure in the autumn-winter period, security challenges, and support of international partners. A separate important issue is the implementation of local budgets and priority areas of funding under martial law.

During a working trip to Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, visited a medical facility where wounded Ukrainian servicemen are being treated. Volodymyr Zelenskyy talked with the defenders who are undergoing treatment and presented them with state awards – 3th degree For Courage orders.

Lviv oblast

During the war, 165K Ukrainians received medical care in Lviv. According to Lviv City Council’s health care department, it is about emergency and scheduled care, prevention, vaccination, etc.

Prayers, poems, and memories of eyewitnesses of the terrible events in Olenivka on the night of July 28-29, 2022 were heard in Barrack #2 of Lviv Memorial Museum of Totalitarian Regimes Territory of Terror. Relatives of the soldiers shared their memories, and children sat on the bunk beds, as if symbolizing the souls of the killed.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that this year, 131 farmers of Rivne oblast received UAH 792 mln in loans. These are additional financial resources necessary for successful business operations in wartime conditions.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that 18 boys and girls from Ternopil oblast went on vacation to the city of Yelenya-Hura, Republic of Poland. This is a group of children whose parents took measures to ensure national security and defense, repulse and deter the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine.

The President of Ukraine handed a passport of a citizen of Ukraine to Arsen Shchyrba, 14-year-old Ternopil resident. The boy’s father, volunteer Taras Shchyrba, was killed on the front line. Volodymyr Zelensky presented Ukrainian passports to 16 young Ukrainians on the occasion of Ukrainian Statehood Day.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

A mobile service station based on MAN was sent to the military at the front thanks to volunteers of the Avanhard CF and Valiza Dobra NGO. Volunteers installed a tire fitting, welding and vulcanizing equipment, a press, a plasma cutter, a grinding machine with a grinder, sets of various tools, a heater, a thermo pot, and a place to rest. Also, the machine has autonomous power and the ability to connect to the power grid.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi RMA begins the implementation of the II stage of the compensation program for the cost of equipment that ensures the accumulation and generation of energy, to ensure the work of business entities in the conditions of the energy crisis. Compensation is provided in the amount of 30% of the cost of equipment that ensures the accumulation and generation of energy (generators, batteries, charging stations, solar panels, wind generators, heat pumps, etc.), but no over UAH 50K per business entity

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Yuliia Svyridenko, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine — Minister of Economy of Ukraine, reported that International partners allocate $244 mln to Ukraine for the needs of humanitarian demining.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the President’s Office, reported that a meeting dedicated to peace in Ukraine will be held in Saudi Arabia in the near future. Advisers to leaders of Ukraine’s allies and neutral states will take part in the meeting. Andrii Yermak said that Ukraine is currently working to attract the maximum number of partners from the West and the Global South to the negotiations.

The Pentagon at the beginning of June approved the agreement on the purchase of 400-500 Starlink terminals for Ukraine, the configuration of which will be in the hands of the United States. According to The New York Times, the question of the importance of Starlink was discussed during a phone conversation between General Valerii Zaluzhnyi and Mark Miley in March of this year.

Assets of a russian oligarch and his son have been seized in the Czech Republic. The total value of the oligarch’s property in Karlovy Vary is about EUR 18 million. The Czech Republic imposed sanctions on yevtushenkov and his son on June 28, 2023. According to Jan Lypavskyi, Head of the country’s Foreign Ministry, sanctions were introduced “for systematic activities that undermine or threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine.”

Pope Francis during the Sunday prayer, the Angel of the Lord in the Vatican appealed to the russian side to restore the Black Sea Grain Agreement, which allowed Ukraine to safely transport grain.
