The russian federation continues to wage a war of aggression, despite significant losses. The invaders are killing civilians in Ukraine, ignoring the laws and customs of war and using terror tactics.
Over the last day, russian forces launched 5 missile and 19 air strikes and fired 30 times from multiple launch rocket systems at Ukrainian troops’ positions and settlements. There are civilian casualties, and residential buildings have been destroyed.
There is still a high threat of further missile and air strikes across Ukraine.
There were 24 combat engagements during the day.
Towards Volyn and Polissia, the situation remained unchanged. There were no signs of offensive groups forming.
Towards Siversk and Sloboda, more than 15 settlements, namely Mykolaivka, Chernihiv oblast; Stara Huta, Hrabovske, Volfyno, Sumy oblast; Udy, Okhrimivka, Ohirtseve and Tykhove in Kharkiv oblast were shelled.
Towards Kupiansk, Dvorichna, Zakhidne, Kindrashivka and Kupiansk in Kharkiv oblast came under enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Lyman, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the areas of Novoiehorivka and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast. Nevske and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Verkhnekamianske, Spirne and Rozdolivka in Donetsk oblast were shelled with artillery.
Towards Bakhmut, more than 10 settlements suffered from artillery attacks, including Bohdanivka, Chasiv Yar, Ivanivske and Bila Hora.
Towards Avdiivka, under heavy fire from enemy aircraft and artillery, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled attacks by russian troops near Avdiivka. More than 10 settlements, including Avdiivka, Pervomaiske, Karlivka, Novokalynove in Donetsk oblast, were shelled with artillery.
Towards Marinka, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the russian offensive near the town of Marinka. The enemy fired at more than 10 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Marinka, Novomykhailivka and Heorhiivka in Donetsk oblast.
Towards Shakhtarsk, the enemy launched airstrikes near Makarivka and Staromaiorsk and shelled Odradne, Blahodatne, Makarivka, Rivne and Staromaiorsk in Donetsk oblast.
Towards Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, the enemy is focusing its main efforts on preventing further advance of Ukrainian troops. The enemy launched airstrikes near Orikhiv, Zaporizhzhia oblast, and Antonivka, Kherson oblast. More than 25 settlements came under artillery fire, including Novodarivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria, and Kamianske in Zaporizhzhia oblast; Zolota Balka, Tokarivka, Antonivka, Mykhailivka in Kherson oblast. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct offensive operations towards Melitopol and Berdiansk, consolidating their positions.
Aviation of the Defense Forces conducted 5 strikes on the areas of concentration of enemy personnel, weapons and military equipment. Our defenders also destroyed one reconnaissance UAV of the operational and tactical level.
Over the course of the day, missile and artillery units destroyed one artillery vehicle at a firing position, one electronic warfare station, and one area where enemy personnel were concentrated.
Energoatom reports that russian occupiers abducted another ZNPP employee. More than a month ago, they kidnapped Serhiy Potinh, a labour protection engineer at the Centralized Technical and Production Department of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.
Vadym Hutsait, Minister of Youth and Sports, informs that fencer Olha Kharlan, who was disqualified for not shaking hands with her russian rival, has received automatic qualification for the 2024 Olympics from the International Olympic Committee.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that at least 8 settlements in Kharkiv oblast, including Dvorichna and Kupiansk, came under russian fire during the day.
According to Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, the evacuation of children from the border community of Vovchansk, which is constantly under enemy fire, is nearing completion. Thanks to volunteer organizations, 48 children and 29 accompanying persons – parents or guardians – have been evacuated to safe areas in Kharkiv oblast. Among them, 27 children and 15 parents were from the town of Vovchansk. Some families evacuated on their own. In total, 184 children have been evacuated from dangerous border areas.
The russian forces shelled the settlements in Kharkiv, Bohodukhiv, Chuhuiv, Izium, and Kupiansk regions using artillery, mortars, and combat aviation. Ivashky, Huriiv Kozachok, Udy, Strylecha, Zelene, Okhrimivka, Kolodiazne, Dvorichna, Zapadne, and others were under fire.
Near Druzhelubyvka, Izium region, the enemy carried out an aviation strike.
No casualties among civilians were reported during the day.
Demining operations are ongoing. SES pyrotechnicians examined more than 6 hectares of land and neutralized 86 ordnance.
Donetsk oblast
Anastasiia Medviedieva, Spokesperson for the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, reported that the russian military shelled Avdiivka, hitting an administrative building and dropped an aerial bomb on the city in the evening.
According to Donetsk RMA, a new project to support our military called Time X has been launched. This project envisages production of UAVs, including kamikaze drones, the first batch of which was handed over to special forces. The defenders have received 24 drones.
Towards Volnovakha, Velyka Novosilka, Blahodatne and Staromaiorske were under fire.
Towards Donetsk, one person was injured and two houses damaged in Kurakhove. In Avdiivka, the residential sector and the Coke and Chemical Plant were hit. In Ocheretyne community, russians shelled the outskirts of Umanskyi.
Towards Horlivka, a multi-storey building and a private house in Chasiv Yar community were damaged.
Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of the RMA, reported that the russian military wounded one resident in Kurakhove.
Yehor Druz, leading inspector of the Department of Fire Safety of the State Emergency Service in Donetsk Oblast, reported that 1391 shelters and storage areas were inspected in the oblast. Almost a hundred of them were found to be unsuitable for use.
Luhansk oblast
Under the barrage of artillery fire, our military defends Luhansk oblast, enduring up to 500-600 attacks per day. The russian forces fired upon Bilohorivka and Nevske. The enemy attempted to advance in Serebrianske forestry and near Bilohorivka, but all their attempts were stopped by Ukrainian defenders.
According to Luhansk RMA, the occupation administration of Sievierodonetsk plans to redistribute commercial facilities and industrial areas that have survived in the city. Therefore, it requires entrepreneurs to confirm their ownership of each building by September 1. Otherwise, their property will be expropriated.
The invaders have also stepped up security measures in Novopskov. They conduct raids, searches, check and remove phones if they find anything suspicious. The names of house owners and their phone numbers are being recorded.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that about 60 russian soldiers refused to perform combat missions in the area of Staromaiorske, Donetsk oblast.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Kyiv RMA reported that a positive decision regarding compensation for damaged housing was made on 1,311 applications for a total amount of over UAH 112 million. Currently, more than 3,800 applications are being processed. The maximum amount of compensation for the restoration of one object is up to UAH 200 K. Owners of damaged housing can spend the received funds on construction materials or contractor services.
It is reported that a rehabilitation facility for people learning to walk with prostheses has been set up in Kyiv. It is located in a park near the City Clinical Hospital No. 4, where many military personnel and civilians who have leg injuries or lost limbs are being treated and undergoing rehabilitation.
A charitable organization sponsored the construction of the first private house built using 3D printing technology in Irpin. The family’s house was destroyed by russian military shelling, and the head of the family was killed in the east, defending Ukraine. According to Oleksandr Markushin, Mayor of Irpin, the city council provided equipment for dismantling the ruins in the yard and prepared the site for construction. It took about 5 days to build a new house using the innovative technology.
In Bucha community, a project has been launched to begin the operational delivery of humanitarian goods, medicines and blood components to medical institutions by drones. In just a few days, community residents will be able to see drones in the sky with yellow-blue markings and red wings. The City Council reported that the technology is safe and reliable – flights are coordinated with the military units of the region in real time.
A mural Family for the Four-Legged Friend dedicated to animal adoption was opened in the center of Kyiv. The project was initiated by Suziria Group to draw public attention to the problem of homeless animals. The main character of the mural is animal volunteer Anastasia Tykha, who, together with her husband, took about 30 animals, including dogs with disabilities, out of war-torn Irpin on foot. The picture repeats the world-famous photo by American photographer Christopher Ochikone.
A project introducing video clips about russia’s war against Ukraine will continue in the capital until August 20. The exhibition of the winners of the International Music Festival MUSIC.UA.WAR takes place in the open air in the Central Park of Kyiv near the Freedom Arch. The festival was organized as art therapy for Ukrainians, and it also collected evidence of the war in musical form. These are the works of musicians of various genres aged from 6 to 79 from Ukraine, Canada and the USA.
Zhytomyr oblast
The grant recipients committed to creating 331 new jobs in Zhytomyr oblast in 2023 as part of the Business program. According to the Regional Employment Service, a total of 160 people have received loans to start businesses under the program since the beginning of the year. The amount of micro-grants received by this year’s recipients is more than 38 million UAH.
17 STEM laboratories are being prepared for opening in 14 communities in Zhytomyr oblast. These are educational spaces for children, equipped with laptops, 3D printers, laser and milling machines, robotics sets, and virtual reality glasses. On July 28, the first STEM HUB was presented at Zhytomyr Vocational Lyceum. The project is implemented by the In Touch Ukraine Foundation and supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF.
Sumy oblast
On July 28, the russians shelled 10 settlements in Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Myropillia, Hlukhiv, Druzhbivka, and Seredino-Buda communities. They were fired from mortars, artillery, and grenade launchers.
At night and in the morning, the occupiers carried out 5 shelling attacks on the border areas. They were fired from mortars and artillery, 15 explosions were recorded. The settlements of Bilopillia, Khotyn, Yunakivka and Seredino-Buda communities were shelled.
Explosives continue to be defused in Sumy oblast. In Shostka and Sumy regions, pyrotechnics neutralized 2 mortar mines and a grenade launcher shot.
Sumy City Council reported that the notification system is being updated in the city. Due to this, in some areas of the city, it is possible to reduce the sound signal level of sirens for a certain time.
The Coordination Forum for the Implementation of the Strategy for Economic Recovery and Development of Sumy oblast gathered partners from different parts of the world. Volodymyr Artukh, Head of the Sumy RMA, noted during the opening that the Coordination Forum became a powerful image and socially important event, the purpose of which is to show that Sumy is not only the northern outpost of Ukraine in the fight against the enemy, but also a region with enormous potential and opportunities. Its participants were representatives from 5 embassies and various organizations and missions from the USA, Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, France, South Korea, Turkey, and Slovenia.
Chernihiv oblast
Over the past day, the russians have launched seven shelling attacks on the border from their territory. There were 18 explosions. As reported in the SBGS, 8 rocket strikes launched by the enemy from a helicopter and 5 mortar strikes were recorded on the territory of Semenivka community. The russian forces opened artillery fire on Novhorod-Siverskyi community – 3 hits were recorded, and 2 grenade launcher hits were made.
Chernihiv border detachment reported that the russian military continues to shell border communities of the oblast. Semenivka and Novhorod-Siverskyi communities came under shelling. Border guards recorded three shots from barrel artillery and 5 shots from mortars.
Chernihiv City Council reported that additional funds in the amount of over UAH 31 million will be allocated from the local budget for the rehabilitation department at Hospital No. 3 in the city. The funds will be used to repair medical equipment.
In Bakhmach, on July 25, the Eastern Ukrainian Center for Public Initiatives presented a traveling exhibition “On the Break” depicting changes in the lives of civilians due to the war. There are 18 stands, each of which is dedicated to social phenomena that have affected Ukrainian society since 2014. The exhibition draws viewers’ attention to the problems of captivity, missing persons, reintegration of occupied territories and the search for ways to restore justice.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA, said that on July 28, russians fired rockets at a residential building. As a result, 9 people were injured, including 2 children. The entire residential complex was damaged, one of the buildings was destroyed from the 9th to the 13th floor. The enemy also fired at Nikopol and Marhanets community with artillery.
Vinnytsia oblast
Serhii Morhunov, Mayor of Vinnytsia, reported that sapper Serhii Haidysh from Vinnytsia has destroyed more than 100 K ordnance in combat zones since 2014. Now he is Head of the pyrotechnic unit of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and is clearing Kharkiv oblast of mines.
Kirovohrad oblast
According to the press service of the State Emergency Service of the oblast, rescuers received equipment from the international company Cargill in Kropyvnytskyi.
Volunteers from the UK brought three vehicles to Kropyvnytskyi for the military at the front.
Poltava oblast
Dmytro Lunin, Head of Poltava RMA, reported that a new team of communal workers went from the oblast to Kherson community. These are 40 volunteers from all regions of Poltava oblast.
In July 2022, Ivan Dehtiar, an entrepreneur from Donetsk oblast, evacuated to Poltava oblast due to shelling, leaving more than 45 hectares of apple orchard near Sloviansk. In Reshetylivka, Ivan started developing his business from scratch. He rented premises to produce apple cider vinegar and juice and purchased equipment with grant funds.
Cherkasy oblast
A patriotic exhibition featuring works by children, students and military personnel was opened in Cherkasy. One of the locations includes the works by Lieutenant Volodymyr Mukan, journalist, editor and founder of a YouTube channel, who was killed in the spring of this year near Bakhmut. The exhibition is titled Moments of War and features more than 20 photos taken with the fallen hero’s camera.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Zaporizhzhya RMA reported that on July 28, the russian army fired 46 times at settlements of the oblast. Orikhiv, Mali Shcherbaki, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Levadne, Olhivka, Bilohiria, Poltavka, Mala Tokmachka, Kamianske, Stepove, Stepnohirsk came under fire.
On July 28, three fires broke out as a result of shelling in Polohy region of Zaporizhzhia oblast. Firefighters extinguished the fire in an outbuilding, the ceiling of a residential building and a garage.
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported that Ukrainian troops continue to conduct counter-offensive operations. Towards Berdiansk, the Defence Forces have advanced 10-12 kilometres.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the occupation administration of Blahoveshchenk, Zaporizhzhia oblast, offers pensioners a cash reward of 50 K russian rubles for obtaining russian citizenship.
More than 100 volunteers cleaned the shallow shores of Khortytsia Island in Zaporizhzhia from bottles, ship parts, and tools for poaching.
A shelter for women with children who had fled the occupied territories was opened in Zaporizhzhia. The shelter was set up by the NGO Women’s Protection of Ukraine in cooperation with international and national charities.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to Mykolaiv Military Administration, on 28 July, at 17:24, russian troops fired artillery at a settlement in Kutsurub community. An open area was hit. On July 29, at 04:30, the russian army fired artillery at the water area of Ochakiv community. There were no casualties.
Today is the Day of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Ukrainian fighters destroyed the enemy and took new prisoners in the southern direction. They were convicted russians who had been promised a reduced sentence for killing Ukrainians.
Odesa oblast
Natalia Humeniuk, Head of the press centre of the Southern Defence and Security Forces, says that Ukraine’s Defense Forces have taken measures to protect port infrastructure and ensure maximum air defense capability. Currently, there are six ships in the Black Sea and one in the Sea of Azov. They are controlling the surface situation. The missile launchers are at their basing points and are not on combat duty.
Large amphibious ships continue to sail along the ferry crossing. The civilian crews are under psychological pressure because a large number of ships in the Black Sea is confusing for them. Shipowners try to avoid areas where any collisions are possible, even at the information level.
Representatives of UNESCO arrived in Odesa to assess the damage to cultural and religious sites caused by russian strikes on 19-23 July. The mission headed by Chiara Dezzi Bardeschi, UNESCO coordinator in Kyiv, will be working in Odesa for four days, and experts.
The developers of the air defense app from Odesa volunteers reported updates during missile attacks. During a recent massive missile attack, Ukrainians from the Technari group marked missile flights on the map using the app, thus improving the detection of missiles by air defense systems. The engineers used artificial intelligence to calculate the likely trajectories and direction of the missiles, which makes it possible to get the coordinates of where the missile will be in a few minutes. The data visualized for the military has significantly improved the situational awareness of Air Defence Units.
The sculpture exhibition by Volodymyr Semkiv within the Languages of War campaign opened on 28 July at the National Art Museum of Odesa. There were sculptures made of wood, which is a special living material reinterpreted by modernity.
Kherson oblast
According to Kherson Regional Military Administration, on the morning of July 29, the russian army attacked Vesele village in Kherson oblast. A 69-year-old woman was wounded and hospitalized.
During the day, July 29, the russian army shelled Zolota Balka, Mykhailivka, Kozatske, Tyahynka, Ivanivka and Sadove in the Kherson region with artillery. Damage was recorded in Sadove, Kherson, Zelenivka and Molodizhne as a result of the shelling. There were no casualties.
On 28 July, the russian army fired 29 times at Kherson oblast. They fired 11 shells at Kherson. Houses and a grain terminal in Beryslav region were damaged. Four people were injured.
According to the State Emergency Service of Kherson oblast, in the de-occupied Kherson oblast, 30678 explosive devices have been defused. Almost 3 K hectares, 350 kilometres of roads, 60 kilometres of railway tracks and almost 2,000 houses have been inspected.
The National Resistance Centre reported that in the temporarily occupied settlements of Kherson oblast, russian special services have introduced a system of collecting information through denunciations. Residents loyal to the occupiers help looking for people with a pro-Ukrainian position.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that over the past week, 18 facilities have been rebuilt in the communities of Kherson oblast as part of the Presidential Programme Side by Side and work has begun on 83 more. 168 homes were restored in the oblast.

Volyn oblast
The RMA reported that soldiers of the border detachment from Volyn returned home after performing combat missions in Donetsk oblast.
Zakarpattia oblast
A charity bike race was held in Uzhhorod. Almost UAH 45 K collected during the event will be donated to the Movement to Support Zakarpattia Military NGO.
Uzhhorod City Council reported that young volunteers from Uzhhorod schools were presented with certificates signed by Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, for their assistance to the Ukrainian army.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Ivano-Frankivsk City Council will pay one-time assistance of UAH 20K to soldiers living in the community for the purchase of equipment. IDP fighters registered in the community and have a valid certificate of internally displaced persons can also receive the assisatnce.
Lviv oblast
The 15th operational brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine received an ambulance thanks to the SPARKASSE ROTENBURG OSTERHOLZ (Germany) and the Caritas-Sokal CF.
About 500 IDP families in Drohobych will receive financial assistance from the Danish Refugee Council. Also, about 400 children will receive funds to purchase school stationery. Over 100 boxes with children’s hygiene products were given out by benefactors.
A mother and child corner was opened in the children’s department of Mykolaiv city hospital thanks to the SOS Children’s Villages international CF.
As part of the Side by Side project, teams from Lviv oblast are restoring about 50 settlements in Kherson oblast. In general, it is planned to restore over 300 objects in three settlements.
In Stii region, in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine, Yurii Hnatyik was posthumously awarded with the 3th degree For Courage Order and Roman Serbin was posthumously awarded with the Defender of the Fatherland medal. The 1st Cross of the Brave medal was presented to defender Ivan Drozda.
Andrii Moskalenko, first deputy mayor of Lviv, announced that the soviet Warrior was dismantled in Bryukhovychy. The sculpture will be handed over to the Memorial Museum of Totalitarian Regimes Territory of Terror in Lviv.
Rivne oblast
The RMA reported that there are currently 52,3K IDPs in the oblast. During the war, Rivne oblast provided shelter for almost 86,6K IDPs. These are mostly low-mobility population groups: over 7K elderly people, almost 15K children and 2K people with disabilities, as well as mothers with children. These are residents displaced from almost the entire front-line, liberated and occupied oblasts.
Ternopil oblast
Ternopil oblast continues to assist Kherson oblast in eliminating the consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovka HPP dam. For the second month in a row, employees of the regional and district military administration of Ternopil oblast inspect damaged buildings and structures in Kherson oblast. After receiving the results of inspection, damaged houses are included in the appropriate register, after which the owners can receive monetary compensation.
45 children of Ukrainian soldiers went on vacation to Poland as part of the Children of Heroes of Ternopil City Territorial Community program thanks to Grzegorz Petruchuk, the Burgomaster of the Belyany district of the city of Warsaw.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
In Khmelnytskyi oblast, theoretical and practical classes are being held to prepare citizens for national resistance. Instructors of the Afhan volunteer formation conducted training for local communities. Participants mastered engineering and combat training rules, tactical medicine and aerial reconnaissance.
Chernivtsi oblast
A meeting of the Public Council at Chernivtsi RMA was held. They discussed implementation of mental health care programs in health care institutions of the oblast and results of the school year that passed under martial law.
The coordination council discussed issues of national-patriotic education at Chernivtsi RMA, namely the creation of a coordination council on establishing Ukrainian national and civil identity.
The newly created infantry battalion, which is being formed in the oblast, received over 20 cars, namely, buses, trucks, and off-road vehicles, from the Association of International Automobile Carriers of Chernivtsi oblast.
A new rehabilitation facility was opened in Mahal Children’s Boarding Home. Due to the assistance from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a massage room, a physical therapy room, a physical therapy room, a sensory room, and an examination room were renovated.
From Bukovyna, a batch of necessary construction materials (timber, corrugated board for roofing, various construction accessories) was sent to the village of Zarichne, Kherson oblast. Bukovyna is rebuilding it as part of the Side by Side nationwide project. In total, it is planned to restore 108 residential objects. At the first stage, 35 houses will be repaired in Zarichne of Visokopillia community. 5 enterprises of the oblast volunteered to help with construction materials.

The EU imposed sanctions against 7 russian individuals and 5 organizations responsible for disinformation about the war in Ukraine. They ran a digital campaign called RRN (Recent Reliable News) aimed at distorting information and spreading propaganda in support of russia’s war against Ukraine.
