What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

There were 42 combat engagements. The enemy launched a total of 12 missiles and 58 air strikes, including Shahed-136/131 attack UAVs, carried out 48 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. The russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Private residential and apartment buildings, and other civilian and industrial infrastructure were destroyed and damaged.

The operational situation in eastern and southern Ukraine remains difficult.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes and no signs of formation of an offensive group. Certain units of the armed forces of belarus continue their missions in the areas bordering Ukraine.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy maintains its military presence in the areas of russia bordering Ukraine. The enemy continues its sabotage and reconnaissance activities, shelling Ukrainian settlements from the territory of russia. They increase the density of minefields along the state border of Ukraine. Over 30 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Khrinivka (Chernihiv oblast), Ulytsia, Svarkove, Stukalivka, Basivka, Vysoke, Popivka (Sumy oblast), Veterynarne, Kozacha Lopan, Ohirtseve, Vovchansk, Budarky, Bolohivka (Kharkiv oblast).

Kupyansk axis: the Ukrainian defenders repelled 11x attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka (Kharkiv oblast). The occupiers launched an air strike near Ivanivka (Kharkiv oblast). The invaders fired from artillery and mortar at around 10 settlements, including Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast).

Towards Lyman, the enemy conducted assault operations near Makiivka (Luhansk oblast). The occupiers launched air strikes in the area of Serebrianske forestry (Luhansk oblast) and near Hryhorivka, Riznykivka, Zvanivka, Spirne (Donetsk oblast). The enemy fired artillery and mortars at more than 10x settlements, including Nevske, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Torske, Serebryanka, Spirne, Verkhnokamyanske, Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Bakhmut, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 7 attacks in the vicinities of Bohdanivka and Andriivka (Donetsk oblast). Over 10 settlements came under artillery and mortar fire, including Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klischiivka, Andriivka (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Avdiivka, the Ukrainian defenders repelled 3 enemy attacks near Avdiivka, and 9 more attacks in the vicinity of Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast). In that area, the enemy conducted unsuccessful attempts to improve the tactical situation. The invaders fired from artillery and mortar at around 10 settlements, including Berdychi, Stepove, Avdiivka, Sjeverne, Netailove, Pervomaiske (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Mariinka, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the enemy in the vicinity of Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast), where the enemy, with air support, conducted 4 failed attacks on Ukrainian positions. The settlements of Maksymilianivka, Heorhiivka, Maryinka, Pobjeda, Novomykhailivka, Kostyantynivka were shelled with the occupiers’ artillery and mortar.

Towards Shakhtarske, Ukrainian defenders repelled an attack near Urozhaine (Zaporizhzhia oblast). They fired from artillery and mortar at around 10 settlements, including Vodyane, Vuhledar, Urozhaine, Makarivka, Staromaiorske (Donetsk oblast).

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy made unsuccessful attempts to regain lost ground in the vicinity of Robotyne (Zaporizhzhia oblast). Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 4 assaults in the area. Over 25 settlements, including Levadne Huliaipole, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Mali Scherbaky, Pyatykhatky (Zaporizhzhia oblast), were shelled from enemy artillery and mortar.

Towards Kherson, they fired from artillery at the settlements of Ivanivka, Sadove, Antonivka and Kherson (Kherson oblast). The enemy launched air strikes near Kachkarivka and Chervonyi Mayak (Kherson oblast).

The occupiers did not abandon their intention to drive Ukrainian units out of their footholds on the left bank of the Dnipro. The enemy launched 9 unsuccessful assaults. The Ukrainian troops are holding the line and keep inflicting significant losses on the enemy.

The Ukrainian Air Force launched air strikes on 11 buildups of troops of the occupiers.

The Ukrainian missile troops hit 3 buildups of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 1 ammunition depot and 1 command post of the russian invaders.


Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, 513 children have died. Another 1,169 received injuries with various degrees of severity.

Sanctions were introduced against 6 russians who used Ukrainian documents.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 11 russian attacks near Synkivka towards Kupiansk. According to the report, russia attacked Ivanivka with aircraft, Vovchansk, Kozacha Lopana, Dvorichna and at least 13 other settlements in Kharkiv oblast with artillery and mortars.

The number of damaged buildings as a result of the shelling of Kharkiv on 29-31 December increased to 84. According to the Department of Housing and Communal Services, most of these buildings were damaged in Kyivskyi district, specifically 70. Destruction was also recorded in Kholodnohirskyi, Slobidskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.

Currently, there are 71 damaged residential buildings. About 950 windows were broken in apartments and another 359 in common areas. Utilities have already closed about 700 windows and carried out emergency repairs on six of the seven damaged roofs. The city also recorded the destruction of 13 non-residential buildings. There are 290 windows and two roofs damaged.

This afternoon, the invaders launched S-300 missiles at Chuhuiv. There are no casualties. Civilian non-residential infrastructure, including warehouses, were damaged. Emergency services are working at the sites of the hits.

Oleh Syniehubov, head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that in Kharkiv, the aftermath of the missile attack is being eliminated. Rescuers have extinguished several fires at the impact sites, including two-storey building with an area of 100 square metres.  They evacuated 8 people and provided first aid to the victims. At least 10 people have been reported injured, including 3 children. A total of 59 rescuers and 10 units of the State Emergency Service equipment were engaged.

On the night of 30-31 December, the enemy carried out four drone strikes on the central part of Kharkiv. There was destruction and damage to administrative, residential and other buildings. Four fires broke out. Their total area was about 1000 square metres. The State Emergency Service units were working at the sites. 2 of the fires have already been extinguished. A fire on the roof of a two-storey building is currently being extinguished. According to preliminary reports, there were no casualties.

Yesterday at 7 pm and 7:20 pm the enemy launched at least 6 missiles at Kharkiv, law enforcers seized the fragments of Iskander. There were no casualties. As a result of shelling, 28 civilians were injured. Among the patients are two children aged 14 and 16, and a foreign citizen. 13 victims of the enemy shelling, specifically 8 women and 5 men, are currently undergoing inpatient treatment in the region’s hospitals. A 16-year-old boy with moderate wounds to his head and abrasions to his back remains in treatment. Two victims are under special medical supervision, a 37-year-old man with shrapnel wounds to the head and torso, and a 64-year-old woman with chest and head injuries, injuries to her upper and lower limbs. Their condition is considered stable.

Other patients have minor injuries. Specifically the victims received shrapnel wounds and bruises. A 14-year-old teenager, hospitalised after the shelling, was examined by doctors and left for outpatient treatment.

Five employees of ZDF German media outlet were in the hotel when a russian missile hit on 30 December. ZDF website informed that one of the employees, a Ukrainian translator, broke a rib and three vertebrae.

Residential buildings, hotel buildings and healthcare facilities like, the regional clinical hospital, the regional dental clinic, two city hospitals and transport were damaged.

Yevheniia Kolienova, manager of Suspilne Kharkiv, said that as a result of a russian strike on downtown Kharkiv with Iskander-M missiles, the Radio House, the office of Suspilne Kharkiv and Ukrainian Radio Kharkiv, was damaged. The windows of the building were broken, the heating system, doors and walls damaged.

The enemy attacked Kharkiv with Shahed drones. There were no casualties. A bank branch, the Institute of Metrology, residential buildings, administrative buildings and cafes were damaged. 

At 12:14 am and 12:34 am, the invaders shelled Borova village, Izium region. A private household was damaged. The bodies of a woman and 2 men were found under the rubble of the house. Their identities are being established. 

Over 15 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were under enemy artillery and mortar attacks, including: Bochkove of Chuhuiv region, Krasne Pershe, Dvorichna, Synkivka, Petropavlivka, Ivanivka, Berestove of Kupiansk region.

The enemy launched airstrikes near Pischane, Kupiansk region. The Armed Forces of Ukraine repelled 8 enemy attacks near Synkivka, Kupiansk region.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Ukrainian troops repelled 37 russian attacks in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The russian army resumed its offensive towards Lyman near Makiivka.

Vadym Filashkin, head of the regional administration, reported that four people were killed and 12 injured as a result of russian shelling on 30 December. The total number of victims in the region on the last day of 2023: 1808 killed, 4440 injured since the beginning of the invasion, excluding casualties in the temporarily occupied Mariupol and Volnovakha.

Roman Padun, head of Kurakhove City Military Administration, said that russian missile attack damaged several hospital buildings and an outpatient clinic. The town was under massive shelling, the hospital was hit in the evening of 30 December. In total, according to the regional police, the occupation forces attacked 20 times and damaged 68 civilian objects over the day.

Vadym Filashkin, head of Donetsk RMA, stated that in the night, Selydove was shelled with three S-300 missiles. Referring to the press service of the RMA, eight injured remain in hospital after the shelling of Selydove. One of the injured is in critical condition. On 30 December, russian army attacked the community 3 times with an Iskander missile and three S-300 missiles. 12 people were injured and 2 killed.

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, spokeswoman of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, reported that on 31 December, the russian military shelled Avdiivka, preliminary, with artillery. A man was injured and hospitalized.

Luhansk oblast

Every day russians are putting pressure with their air force, hitting our villages and fortifications. Yesterday they tried to do so nine times. They attacked from the sky near Novoselivske, Stelmakhivka, Nadiia and Bilohorivka. Also, during the examination of the area after another attack on Nevske, the destruction of another house was recorded.

On 28 December, the invaders destroyed five private houses of Nevske residents with aerial attack but more were found.

On 30 December, the invaders shelled the village with mortars and artillery.

A 54-year-old woman agreed to evacuate. She is the fourth person who has been helped to leave in recent days. The local military administration will provide her with the necessary assistance.

Also russians tried to storm near Makiivka, where two of their attempts were repelled by the Defence Forces.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that the regions of russia are looking for ways to reduce budget support for the occupied Luhansk oblast. In Tambov region, for instance, they decided to pass this burden to employees of enterprises and institutions. 5% of their salaries will be deducted monthly for the “fund of the regional programme of assistance to luhansk people’s republic”. Novoaidar region is in charge of this area.

The touring builders left the occupied Rubizhne for holidays and no one knows when they will return. They left the town, leaving the roofs of the apartment buildings dismantled. Due to this irresponsible attitude and bad weather, the houses were completely flooded in a few days.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the National Police, as of 12:30 a.m. on December 31, rescuers had unblocked 23 people from the rubble in Kyiv’s Shevchenkivskyi district. They were killed in a russian missile attack on December 29. 8 people were rescued. 35 people were injured.  Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing. 1400 cubic metres of destroyed building structures have been moved and removed. Rescue operations are ongoing around the clock. 91 people and 34 units of equipment are involved.

Kyiv oblast has repelled another terrorist attack by the enemy. Last night, the oblast was attacked by drones. Our air defence forces were actively working in the oblast. As a result of the attack on one of the critical infrastructure facilities, a fire broke out in an open area due to falling debris. It was promptly extinguished. There were no hits to residential infrastructure. There were no casualties or injuries. Operational teams continue to collect information about the consequences of the attack.

According to the Bucha city council, Fabien Genet, a French senator, visited Bucha to get acquainted with the city and honour the memory of all those who died during the occupation in February-March 2022. He visited the church, where he saw photographic evidence of russian atrocities. The photos shocked the delegate, who was horrified by the occupiers’ cruelty.

On New Year’s Eve, there was an all-Ukrainian action called Second New Year in captivity. Do not be silent. Captivity kills! Rallies in support of the captives were held in 7 cities across the country. They were organised by the Association of Families of Azovstal Defenders.

In Kyiv, police officers spotted a man who got into a car that caught fire as a result of the russian attack on the capital on December 29 to drive it away from nearby cars. Law enforcement officers visited the man at his home, he lives in the Sviatoshynskyi district. The Kyiv resident received an award from the chief of the Kyiv police and a personalised wristwatch.

Ruslan Kravchenko, head of the Kyiv RMA, reported that more than 16.5 thousand vital facilities have been restored or partially repaired in the Kyiv oblast. The hostilities damaged or destroyed more than 28,000 properties. Most of restored facilities are residential buildings, about 15,000 of which have been rebuilt. So far, 198 kindergartens and schools, 109 healthcare facilities and 76 administrative buildings have been restored.

According to he Bucha City Council, students of Bucha school bought and presented three new drones to our defenders. Funds for the devices were raised during the Give a Kamikaze Drone to the Armed Forces of Ukraine charity fairs held in all educational institutions of the Bucha community.

Schoolchildren from Obukhiv raised UAH 16,000 at the fair and donated it to the production of the drones. 

Zhytomyr oblast

Teachers of the Ukrainian Language Department held Ukrainian language classes for IDPs and all interested persons. They discussed the language and read poetry by Taras Shevchenko, Lesia Ukrainka, Vasyl Symonenko, Andrii Malyshko, and Dmytro Pavlychko.

On December 31, a girl came to the square in Romaniv with a poster “Don’t be silent, captivity kills”. With her action, she tried to draw attention to the problem of prisoners of war. Last week, a member of the Coffee for a Warrior volunteer group held a similar action.

Sumy oblast

On the night of December 31, 2023, russians fired 4 mortar shells at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 21 explosions. The Myropil (16 explosions) and Seredyna-Buda (5 explosions) communities were shelled.

According to the Sumy RMA, on December 30, russians fired 37 times at the border of Sumy oblast, attacked with FPV drones, and dropped explosives from UAVs. There were 179 explosions. The Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Myropil, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Seredyna-Buda communities were shelled.

The Sumy police reported that the invaders fired at the settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 261 attacks. The shelling damaged the building of the primary healthcare centre and windows in the houses on the street.

A 10kV overhead line was disconnected in Sumy oblast due to artillery shelling from the russian side of the border. Three settlements (502 consumers) are without electricity. They will be reconnected as soon as the military allows. In total, 57 settlements in the oblast remain without power supply due to hostilities, 11 of them partially (2784 consumers).

Chernihiv oblast

The russian army fired 6 times at the border areas of Chernihiv oblast. There were 46 explosions. The enemy fired at Novhorod-Siverskyi district. The enemy fired mortars towards the villages of Liskivshchyna and Hremiachka of the Semenivka community and towards the village of Mykhalchyna Sloboda of the Novhorod-Siverskyi community. Due to helicopter strikes, 2 residential buildings and 5 outbuildings caught fire in the border village of Semenivka community. The enemy shelled the town of Semenivka with multiple rocket launchers, killing 1 civilian (a 32-year-old man) and injuring 1. About 30 residential and commercial buildings and a building on the territory of a local enterprise were damaged.

Police evacuated a pensioner couple from the border area of Chernihiv oblast.  On New Year’s Eve, russians shelled Leonivka and left the old people homeless. Together with the local authorities, the evacuation was agreed upon, municipal trucks were engaged, and the elderly couple was found accommodation in a safer place.

A charity boxing tournament was held in Ichnia. It raised over UAH 20,000 for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The 38 athletes formed 19 pairs in the ring, most of whom boxed in public for the first time. The boxers’ mothers prepared home-made pastries and raised money for the unit where their fellow countrymen serve.

According to the Borzna City Council, Borzna residents raised UAH 250,000 to buy a seven-seater SUV and send it to the military. The car was handed over to fellow countryman Dmytro Yaremenko, who is currently defending Ukraine at the frontline.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Serhii Lysak, Head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA reported that another victim of the massive missile attack died in hospital. This is a 45-year-old man. Doctors fought for him to the . In total, the terrorist attack claimed the lives of 7 people.  18 patients remain in hospitals. Among them is a one and a half year old boy. Most of the injured are in moderate condition. Two are in serious condition. In the afternoon the enemy continued terrorizing Nikopol region. There are three casualties in the district center. Two men and a woman were wounded. A pharmacy, an office building, two minibuses and two cars were damaged in Nikopol.

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council informed about 17 enemy attacks in the Nikopol region. The occupiers used artillery and 12 kamikaze drones. Nikopol, Pokrovsk and Myrove communities were shelled. Locals a 60-years-old woman and two men 61 years-old were injured as a result of the shelling. 

A utility company, a pharmacy, a gas station, an office building, an agricultural company, private houses, cars and minibuses, three dozen solar panels and power lines were damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad region reported that the region is under enemy fire again. The defenders of the sky have been working. In Kropyvnytskyi region a power line and an outbuilding were damaged.

Poltava oblast

During almost 2 years of full-scale war with russia in Poltava region 14 religious communities and six priests have joined the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA reported that at night Ukrainian defenders shot down 4 enemy UAVs.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

General Staff of the  Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that four attacks by the russian military west of Verbove and east of Kopanya were repelled by the Armed Forces of Ukraine  towards Zaporizhzhia. 

The State Emergency Service said that an 82 mm mortar shell was discovered by bomb squad in one of the settlements of Zaporizhzhia oblast. 

126 times struck russian army   in the towns and villages of Zaporizhzhia oblast on December 30. They fired 97 times from artillery at the territories of Orikhov, Zaliznychne, Novoandriivka, Gulyaypilske, Levadne, Temyrivka, Poltavka, Stepnohirsk, Kamianske, Pyatikhatki, and Plavni.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that on  December 30, two communities in Mykolaiv oblast and the city of Ochakiv came under artillery fire. There were no casualties. The Air Armed Forces shot down one russian army Shahed-131/136 attack drone.

The press service of Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Mykolaiv  oblast on  December 31 2023, a man was injured in the Nechayanska community of the Mykolaiv oblast as a result of the detonation of an explosive device. The victim was hospitalised. 

On  December 30, an event for children was held in the Yurt of Unbreakability in Mykolaiv. The organisers told the visitors about the history of Kazakhstan and the help from the Kazakh people during the full-scale war. The young guests were also treated to sweets.

Odesa oblast

Southern Armed  Forces reported on December 31 that Armed Forces shot down six russian Shahed drones in Odesa oblast. The wreckage caused a fire, which was extinguished. 

The Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that there are five and one enemy ship on combat duty in the Black and Azov Seas, respectively. However, there are no missile launchers. There are three enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, including 2 Kalibr cruise missile carriers, with a total volley of up to 16 missiles. 

Kherson oblast

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that in the afternoon, on December 31, the russian army shelled Kherson, hitting a store near the town centre. One boy was killed and another is in a very serious condition. Doctors diagnosed him with a head injury and are now fighting for his life. In addition, 2 women were injured. 

Southern Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the russian military attacked the Tyahynska community in Kherson  oblast with drones. Several private houses were damaged. 

Roman Mrochko, Head of Kherson Military Administration, said that in the morning, on December 31, the russian army shelled Kherson with artillery. Seven people were injured. A shop, residential buildings and vehicles were damaged. 

As a result of the shelling, Kherson’s Korabel district is without electricity and water. Power engineers were working to restore power supply throughout the day. 

Towasrds  Kherson, russian troops stormed Ukrainian positions 13 times over the last day. The Armed Forces continue to hold them and inflict losses on the russian army. In particular, they destroyed eight vehicles and killed 10 russian servicemen.

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that on December 30 the russian army fired 71 times at Kherson oblast. It hit residential areas, an administrative building, an educational institution and an indestructibility point in Beryslav region. Two people were killed. 

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

This year, the Safety Classroom All-Ukrainian project was actively implemented in Volyn. In total, 89 such classrooms were opened in educational institutions of the oblast. They are arranged in every region and practically in all communities. In particular, interactive classrooms are conducted in the safety classrooms in a playful manner. With the help of models, dummies and practical elements, children learn the key safety rules. Children are also taught the rules and provision of first aid, discussing safety measures in the field of radiation, nuclear, and chemical hazards.

Zakarpattia oblast

A rehabilitation center for military personnel is being set up in Mukachevo. On the territory of one of the oblast’s medical institutions, where servicemen receive treatment, an area for rest and spiritual recovery has been set up.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

32 children and their mothers from the South of the country came to improve their health and relax in the Carpathians. They are accepted by institutions in Kosova and Yaremche.

This week, 88 combatants from the Ivano-Frankivsk community will receive UAH 20K each for a total of UAH 1,76 mln. And in general, since the beginning of the program, this assistance has already been allocated to 3 276 fighters for a total amount of UAH 65,52 mln.

Lviv oblast

Heat, electricity, water and gas have been restored to all 18 high-rise buildings that were hit by a missile strike on December 29. Also, in all apartments, except for a few that are closed, a film was installed on the broken windows to protect the apartment from the weather. They started installing new windows.

During 2023, over 3K families in Lviv oblast received humanitarian aid from the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations.

Employees of the Pidberiztsivska village council of Lviv district purchased 2 cars, namely, a Nissan Navara and a Hyundai Galloper, worth over $14K to the local soldiers.

Krasno Settlement Council of Zolochiv region purchased 10 FPV drones and batteries for the 80th separate airborne assault brigades for the military at the expense of the local budget.

Over UAH 35K were donated to the defenders by carolers from the village of Nizhnya Bilka ofPidberiztsiv community.

In Lviv oblast, a car was purchased for the 103rd Separate Territorial Defense Brigade with the funds collected as part of the bike ride. The Strength in Unity annual charity bike ride took place in September. Over 300 people took part in it, and the route of the cycling campaign ran through the territory of 5 communities of the oblast. As part of the event and charity auction, it was possible to collect over UAH 100K.

Rivne oblast

Rivne nuclear workers sent equipment worth over UAH 1.2 mln to the defenders. They were able to provide such support thanks to the continuous donations of RAEP employees to the account of the Energy Peremogy NGO as part of the I Help the Armed Forces open-ended charitable campaign. This week, nuclear workers sent Christmas Gifts, included, drones and FPV drones, Starlinks, walkie-talkies, a thermal imager, a night vision device and other technical equipment, to 11 units where RANPP employees, their relatives, or residents of Varas community serve.

Ternopil oblast

Chernivtsi oblast

The government additionally allocated UAH 12.4 mln to Chernivtsi oblast for the purchase of housing for six military personnel and their families. In general, UAH 65.4 mln was allocated from the state budget of the oblast this year to provide housing for 31 combatants, in particular: UAH 23.0 mln for 11 military families who defended the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine; UAH 32.3 mln for 15 families of IDPs who defended the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine; UAH 10.1 mln for 5 combatants who took part in international missions. 11 people have already purchased their own housing with the funds of monetary compensation.
