War in Ukraine today: latest news, August 6, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 529th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On August 6, the enemy launched 30 missile and 48 air strikes, fired 32 times from multiple launch rocket systems at the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements. Unfortunately, russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries, as well as damage to residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure. 

There is still a high threat of missile and air strikes launched across Ukraine.

There were about 30 combat engagements during the day.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, the situation remained unchanged.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy fired at more than 30 settlements, namely Buchky and Hremiach in Chernihiv oblast; Bobylivka, Vyshenky, Svarkove, Tymofiivka, Pavlivka in Sumy oblast and Odnorobivka, Kozacha Lopan, Ohirtseve, Varvarivka, Khatne in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian troops were holding steadfastly and successfully repelled enemy attacks in the area east of Petropavlivka, Kharkiv oblast. The enemy conducted airstrikes in the areas of Petropavlivka and Podoly, Kharkiv oblast. More than 10 settlements came under enemy artillery and mortar fire, including Kamianka, Novomlynsk, Zakhidne, Petropavlivka, and Kupyansk-Vuzlovyi in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Lyman, there were enemy airstrikes near Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Spirne and Rozdolivka in Donetsk oblast. The settlements of Kuzmyne and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Torske, Verkhnekamianske and Rozdolivka in Donetsk oblast were subjected to enemy artillery fire.

Towards Bakhmut, Ukrainian defense forces are holding back the enemy in the area northeast of Diliivka. More than 10 settlements suffered from enemy artillery shelling, including Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Markove, Chasiv Yar, Predtechine, Bila Hora and Niu York in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka, under heavy fire from enemy aircraft and artillery, Ukraine’sdefenders successfully repelled attacks by russian troops near Avdiivka. Avdiivka and Pervomaiske in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

Towards Marinka, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the russian offensive in the areas of Marinka and Krasnohorivka. The enemy conducted an airstrike near Krasnohorivka, Donetsk oblast. Krasnohorivka, Hostre, Heorhiivka, Marinka and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the russian army launched an airstrike near Staromaiorske. Vodiane, Vuhledar, Blahodatne and Staromaiorske in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives near Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were airstrikes near Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne and Orikhove. More than 10 settlements came under artillery fire, including Novodarivka, Malynivka, Huliaipole, Vesele, Mali Shcherbaky and Piatikhatky in Zaporizhzhia oblast, and Nikopol in Dnipropetrovs’k oblast.

Towards Kherson, the enemy launched an airstrike near Olhivka, Kherson oblast. More than 15 settlements were shelled, including Zolota Balka, Novooleksandrivka, Dudchany, Zmiivka, Tokarivka, Kherson and Kizomys in Kherson oblast.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct offensive operations towards Melitopol and Berdiansk, consolidating their positions and conducting counter-battery operations.

Aviation of the defense forces carried out 10 strikes on buildups of enemy personnel, weapons and military equipment and 2 strikes on occupiers’ anti-aircraft missile systems. 

Rocket and artillery units struck 2 control points, 2 buildups of enemy personnel, 2 artillery pieces at firing positions and one enemy electronic warfare station.

Kostiantyn Ushchapovskyi, Head of the National Commission for State Regulation in Energy and Utilities, informs that TPPs and CHPs damaged by the enemy have been restored by only 1.6%. The figures indicate possible problems in the coming autumn-winter period. 

The Ministry of Reintegration of the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine reports that regulations on IDP Councils at local authorities were approved. The Council will assist internally displaced persons in their adaptation and integration into host communities.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on August 5, the russian army tried to conduct an assault near Vilshana and Synkivka but retreated with losses under Ukrainian attacks. During the past 24 hours, russia bombed the outskirts of Petropavlivka and the suburbs of Podoly, Kupiansk region. Ukrainian forces also repelled russian attacks east of Petropavlivka.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, informed that towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian troops are securely holding the positions.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the RMA, informs that russians launched missile strikes on Kharkiv in the morning. Previously, it was the S-300. Specialized services went to inspect the consequences of the shelling in Kholodna Hora district. No casualties or injuries were reported during the day. 

The press service of Kharkiv police said that on the morning of 6 August, a 65-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman sustained injuries as a result of the shelling of Putnykove, Kupiansk region. They refused to be hospitalised. A private house was also damaged. 

Andrii Kanashevych, Head of Kupiansk Regional Military Administration, said that Valentyna Shevchenko, Chief Accountant of Kupiansk RMA, was killed during an attack on Podoly on  August 6. The press service of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that russian troops struck Podoly with a FAB-250 guided missile. A 66-year-old man was injured and hospitalised. A private building was destroyed and a fire broke out in an outbuilding.

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that a 31-year-old man was injured during the shelling of Kupiansk on the morning of  August 6.

On August 5, at 8:20pm in Kruhliakivka, Kupiansk region, russians attacked a non-residential building with a guided bomb, causing a large-scale fire. According to the preliminary information, 2 people were killed and 4 more injured.

On August 5, settlements of Bohodukhiv, Kharkiv, Chuhuiv, Izium and Kupiansk regions were targeted. As a result of the shelling in Kupiansk, several buildings, outbuildings and farm facilities were damaged. A 55-year-old man sustained shrapnel wounds and was hospitalized. In Cherneshchyna, Izium region, private houses were damaged. As a result of shelling, in Podoly, Kupiansk region, a forest fire occurred. In Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region, buildings of the meat-processing plant were damaged by the shelling. In Tymofiivka, Bohodukhiv region, the enemy attacked buildings of a quail farm. 

Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service defused 77 explosive ordnance during the day.

Donetsk oblast

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reported that on  August 5, russians killed 2 civilians in Niu York and Torske. 2 more people were injured in the region.

Towards Volnovakha, a building was destroyed in Maksymivka, Vuhledar community. Vuhledar and Bohoiavlenka were under attack.

Towards Donetsk, russians shelled Krasnohorivka of Marinka community and Kurakhove. There were isolated attacks in Avdiivka, with no casualties.

Towards Horlivka, in Niu York 1 person was killed and 2 injured, 14 buildings and a school damaged. In Toretsk, an administrative building was also damaged. In Chasiv Yar community, 2 private buildings, an apartment building and an industrial facility were damaged.

Towards Lysychansk, 1 person was killed in Torske, Lyman community. In Siversk, 2 buildings were destroyed and 3 more damaged.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, for many months, the enemy has been unable to move from Bilohorivka, so they are constantly sending reserves to this area and reinforcing their presence but another attempt was repelled. Usually, russians try to use artillery to its maximum, involve aviation if possible and after such massive preparation, they proceed directly to the assault.

In addition to Bilohorivka, air strikes were launched on Nevske and Dibrova. The enemy used artillery near Kuzmine.

In the occupied territories, for preparation for the school year, russians give school students diaries with printed military oaths to the occupying country.

The enemy is also in a hurry to organise the so-called ‘first elections’. In order to increase the turnout, they are intensifying measures to force passportisation of the population. Mobile passport offices have been deployed to cities and villages near the front line, where the pace of passport issuance is slow. Also russians, ignoring residents’ safety, only want to hand out russian documents to as many people as possible by September 10.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Bucha City Council reported that more than 900 buildings damaged during hostilities in Kyiv oblast were fully or partially restored. These are mostly high-rise buildings, private and social objects. The reconstruction of the community is financed with funds from local, state,  and regional budgets, subsidies from Kyiv and international donors. In 2022-2023, about UAH 548 million was used to restore social facilities and the housing stock.

Restoration of the modernist stained glass windows damaged during the shelling at Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University is ongoing. The work is carried out by the Institute of Biology and Medicine together with activists and volunteers. They are gradually restoring five panels using authentic glass and lead solders.

Entrepreneurs from Kyiv and three oblasts can receive grants for business support. The international humanitarian organization, Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, provides grant assistance to entrepreneurs from among internally displaced persons, as well as micro-businesses affected by the war. Preference is given to women entrepreneurs, in particular those who became the head of the family due to the military service of the husband, his injury, stay in captivity or death.

The yacht club of the Kyiv Palace of Children and Youth accepted another group of war veterans and people with disabilities for physical and psychological rehabilitation. As part of the social project of adaptation and socialization of combatants, persons with disabilities and their family members, 20 families had the opportunity to sail on a yacht and relax on a picnic. Volleyball and football fields were also deployed for the leisure of veterans.

Zhytomyr oblast

The All-Ukrainian sports competition of veterans, The Strong of Ukraine, took place in Zhytomyr. About 100 athletes, veterans of the russian-Ukrainian war, who cannot take an active part in combat due to injuries, competed in rowing, bench press and exercise bike.

Sumy oblast

Sumy RMA reported that 13 settlements in 7 communities were shelled: Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Seredina-Buda, Shalyhine, Esman, and Nova Sloboda. There were 119 explosions. As a result of the shelling, a private house and a summer kitchen were damaged.

The Prosecutor General’s Office reported that a local resident was killed in Nova Sloboda community as a result of an enemy mortar attack. It was a 61-year-old resident of the village of Manukhivka.

Sumy RMA reported that Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Yunakivka and Seredino-Buda were shelled 6 times. 19 explosions were recorded. 6 settlements in 4 territorial communities were shelled  with mortars, grenade launchers, artillery, and machine guns.

The Ministry of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine reported that Kolotylivka-Pokrovka humanitarian checkpoint on the border of Sumy and Belgorod (russian federation) oblasts has resumed operations. It is intended for Ukrainians evacuating from the occupied territories. There is a volunteer humanitarian center on the Ukrainian border, where all Ukrainians can receive free psychological, legal and humanitarian assistance. Those wishing to evacuate from Sumy oblast can use the Sumy-Kyiv special evacuation train.

Oleksandr Lysenko, Sumy Mayor, and his team visited compatriots who are serving in  Zaporizhzhia oblast. The soldiers were given night vision devices, generators and medicines.

Chernihiv oblast

The russians shelled the border of Chernihiv oblast 3 times from their territory. As reported by the SBGS, there were 24 explosions. Novhorod-Siverskyi and Snovsk communities came under shelling.

Demining of settlements and agricultural lands of the oblast continues. Only on August 4, pyrotechnicians were involved in cleaning Nizhyn and Chernihiv regions 4 times. Sappers discovered and destroyed 52 explosive ordnance.

Chernihiv City Council reported that information stands, Memorial Place, began to be installed in the city at locations where local civilians and servicemen were killed due to the russian aggression. 

50 pairs of twins gathered at the fifth anniversary festival CheTwinsFest in Chernihiv. For safety reasons, the event was held in the yard of a private school with a shelter. The participants painted a picture “Thank you to the Armed Forces of Ukraine”. A fundraiser was held to purchase a car for one of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, reported that russians attacked Nikopol 3 times. They shelled settlements of Marhanets community with artillery. 

Serhii Lysak, Head of Dnipro Regional Military Administration, reported that the air defense shot down a russian UAV over the region.

In Kamianske, a centre for providing social support for IDPs started operating. Now more than 26 K IDPs from Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv and Kherson oblasts live in the city. The centre helps with documents, children enrolment to school or kindergarten, employment and appeal to other experts. 

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Nataliia Humaniuk, Spokeswoman of the ‘South’ Operational Command, reported that tonight air defense was on alert in the sky over Vinnytsia. 

Soldiers of  14th assault brigade Chervona Kalyna of the National Guard of Ukraine conducted large-scale combat training involving all possible means of warfare. They practised aerial reconnaissance, terrain orientation, route planning, movement and communication between the units.

Kirovohrad oblast

The Southern Air Command reported that at night air defense shot down a Shahed-136/131 drone over Kirovohrad.

In Kropyvnytskyi, a car rally was held in support of captured Mariupol defenders.

Poltava oblast

Rescuers from Poltava garrison, together with the staff of Poltava healthcare facility and a voluntary group of the local community, conducted on-site civil protection training. The main goal of the training was to practise the correct actions of the staff and interaction between the facility staff and rescuers during the evacuation of visitors and patients.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, said that at night air defence shot down a russian missile over Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On August 6, russian forces shelled the city of Orikhiv. As a result of the attack, a nine-story residential building caught fire, with a total area of the blaze reaching 450 square meters. During the firefighting operation, a second round of shelling occurred, forcing the firefighters to temporarily suspend their work at the height. In total, 12 rescuers and 3 units of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire.

On August 5, the enemy launched 95 strikes on 21 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Among them were 6 missile strikes from multiple rocket launchers on Temirivka and Novodarivka, 5 rocket attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Komishuvakha, as well as an airstrike on Orikhiv, and drone attacks on Zatishshia and Novodarivka. Additionally, there were 81 artillery strikes, targeting Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Chervone, Levadne, Novoandriivka, Malynivka, Uspenivka, Bilohiria, Kamianske, Stepove, Piatyhatky, Pavlivka, and Plavni.

During the night, russian forces once again attacked the outskirts of Zaporizhzhia. Storage facilities of an infrastructure object were damaged by the blast wave. Also surrounding dry grass caught fire. A municipal enterprise and nearby residential buildings in Komishuvakha were damaged as a result of the attack at night.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv RMA, on August 5, at 10:35, the enemy carried out artillery shelling on Ochakiv, resulting in damage to residential buildings.

During the night of August 5 to 6, two Kalibr cruise missiles and two Shahed-136 attack drones were destroyed by air defense forces in Mykolaiv oblast.

Serhii Shaikhet, Chief of the National Police of Mykolaiv oblast, says that a vehicle belonging to local residents hit an anti-tank mine near Snihurivka in Bashtanka region. As a result of the explosion, one person was killed, and another injured.

Odesa oblast

The ‘South’ Operational Command reported that russian forces have reduced the number of missile carriers in the Black Sea to one. The total salvo of this single missile carrier can consist of up to eight “Kalibr” cruise missiles. Overall, there are 10 enemy ships remaining on combat duty in the Black Sea, and one more in the Sea of Azov. The threat of a missile strike remains high.

The press service of the United Nations reports that on August 5, Deniz Brown, the UN’s humanitarian coordinator in Ukraine, visited the port of Izmail and strongly condemned the russian attack on Izmail and other Ukrainian ports.

Kherson oblast

On August 6, strong explosions were heard in the area near the Chongar Bridge. The occupying authorities claimed it was a missile strike from the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The occupation head of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, stated that only one hit occurred, causing damage to the road surface. The deputy head of the occupying authorities in Kherson oblast, Volodymyr Saldо, claimed that the attack was allegedly carried out by Storm Shadow missiles. According to him, 9 out of 12 missiles were intercepted by the air defense system, but one civilian was injured. The operation of the Chongar checkpoint was temporarily suspended. He also confirmed an attack on the bridge across the Tonka Strait, which connects the city of Henichesk with the Arabat Spit. A gas pipeline was damaged near the bridge.

The military of the 11th Brigade named after Hrushevsky of the National Guard of Ukraine destroyed the russian army’s observation complex Murom-M located on the bridge over the Konka River. This complex was used by russian forces for continuous surveillance to prevent the breakthrough of Ukrainian defense forces.

Today, the occupiers shelled Mykilske, resulting in two people being injured on the premises of a residential building.

Yesterday, the enemy carried out 46 attacks, launching 188 projectiles from mortars, artillery, and UAVs. The city of Kherson was targeted with 24 projectiles. Police documented damage to residential properties in Kherson and Beryslav regions. An aerial strike was conducted on Odradokamianka, with the aggressor targeting the coastline, roads, and homes of civilians, resulting in severe damage or destruction. An attack on Stanislav was also confirmed, causing damage to 2 houses and a car. Due to the russian aggression, four people were injured. There are16 criminal cases initiated  regarding military crimes committed by russian forces in Kherson oblast.

The russian military and political leadership is increasing dissemination of propaganda materials in the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast. Printed publications and messenger communities under their control spread narratives about how “the russian leadership contributes to improving living standards of the region’s residents” and how “Ukraine has abandoned its historical past and disregards the glory of the ancestors,” among other things. The occupiers aim to strengthen people’s loyalty to the occupying administration, particularly encouraging the youth to participate in russian-initiated projects and enrol in russian or controlled universities.

Local fire protection units are operational in all de-occupied communities of Kherson and Beryslav regions. There are currently twelve local fire protection units in place: 4 in Kherson region and 8 in Berislav region. There are around 50 volunteers who have undergone relevant training and preparation. These units are equipped with vehicles, gear, firefighting equipment, and other necessities for prompt fire response.

Special filters have been installed in the villages of Tiahynka community to provide drinking water to the residents. The OAZIS S-300 units are designed to purify water from any open fresh source, with a capacity of up to 5 thousand liters of water per day. The equipment can be connected through an inverter to a vehicle’s electrical system or directly to a diesel generator.

The children’s swimming pool has resumed its operation in the de-occupied village of Liubymivka, Novorontsovka community. During the war, it was polluted by the russian military.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Rozhyshchen children’s volunteer group Banderivtsi continues collecting cars for the belarusian unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. To raise money for cars, children organize open-air concerts. As of August 6, over UAH 89 K of the required UAH 180 K have already been raised, .

Zakarpattia oblast

The first-year students of the Zakarpattia Regional Center for Training the Population for National Resistance continue their studies. At the regional Emergency Medical Center, the students were given theoretical and practical training in tactical and disaster medicine. The training is conducted by experienced specialists of the Uzhhorod Ambulance Station.

The regional council reported that housing for about 100 IDPs is being completed in Svaliava. 10 modular houses were built with the funds from Caritas of the Czech Republic.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast is one of the eight oblasts in which the Polish Service for the Reconstruction of Ukraine operates. The  CSS WEI project involves the Union of Employers and Entrepreneurs, which is the largest business association in Poland. The project will be implemented with the support of the Polish government.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that for children whose parents protect Ukraine on the front lines and volunteers, a free day center was opened in Lviv by the YMCA Lviv international youth organization.

The RMA reported that the Tourist Information Centers of Lviv oblast provides free tours for defenders.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that during the night air attack in the south of Rivne oblast, air defense was on alert. There are no victims or injured. Several private households were damaged.

Ternopil oblast

Children from Buchacha region raised money by selling homemade kvass. The collected UAH 11K was donated for the Ukrainian military.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Since yesterday evening, Khmelnytskyi has been attacked three times. There was a series of explosions in Starokostiantiniv and Khmelnytskyi communities. Most of the missiles were shot down by air defense forces. Yet, the blast wave damaged the roof, doors, and windows of several private residential buildings in Starokostiantiniv community. Windows were broken in a communal cultural institution, the bus station, and a commercial building. As a result of the enemy attack, a fire broke out in the corn waste warehouse on the territory of the elevator in Starokostiantyniv community. 16 rescue workers worked at the scene. The fire was eliminated in an area of ​​1.4K sq.m. As a result of the explosion, an employee of the facility was injured.

Chernivtsi oblast

In Bukovyna, boarding facilities received a food-washing boiler, an electric meat grinder, a gasoline lawn mower, a centrifuge, a refrigerator, a dishwasher, heat guns, and a 2-section bakery cabinet thanks to the Inclusive Humanitarian Response in Chernivtsi Oblast project, which implements the Leader Chernivtsi Regional Organization of People with Disabilities NGO with support AAR Japan[難民をるる会]

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

On August 5, Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) hosted the second meeting of diplomatic advisers on national security and political directors of foreign policy departments of the world leading countries regarding the key principles of restoring a stable and just peace for Ukraine. In total, over  40 states were represented in Jeddah, which is almost three times over in the consultations in Copenhagen. Parties agreed that respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine should be the basis of any peace agreement, as a priority and the UN Charter.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine said that all those present testified to the commitment of their countries to the principles of the UN Charter, international law and respect for sovereignty and inviolability of the territorial integrity of states. And it is on these principles that the Peace Formula is built. The meeting in Jeddah was a step towards implementation of peace initiatives proposed by Ukraine. Every state participates in consultations, and is able to show leadership in global efforts for peace. Most of them have already defined their role in implementing individual points of the Formula.

The Times reported that Great Britain sent air-to-air ASRAAM missiles to the Ukrainian army, but they were integrated into a ground-based launcher.

Zuzana Chaputova, Slovak President, allowed 9 citizens to serve in the Ukrainian army.

Andreas Schwarz, member of the Bundestag from the Social Democratic Party of Germany, called on the government to provide Ukraine with Taurus long-range cruise missiles. This is the first such call that came from the party headed by Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz. According to the politician, these missiles can help Ukraine overcome minefields.
