War in Ukraine today: latest news, August 23, 2023 (photo)

It has been the 546th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

Over the last day, the enemy launched 9 missile and 49 airstrikes, fired 40 times from multiple launch rocket systems at Ukrainian troops’ positions and settlements. Also, today the occupiers carried out another attack on the territory of Ukraine using a Shahed-136/131 UAV. Ukraine’s air defense destroyed 12 enemy attack drones. Unfortunately, russian terrorist attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and injuries. Residential buildings, port infrastructure, schools and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed. 

There is still a high threat of missile and air strikes across Ukraine.

There were 16 combat engagements over the day.

The situation towards Volyn and Polissia remained unchanged. 

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the enemy launched air strikes near Romny, Kostiantynivka in Sumy oblast and Dovzhyk, Chuhunivka in Kharkiv oblast. He fired mortar and artillery shells at more than 15 lsettlements, including Bleshnia in Chernihiv oblast; Iskryskivshchyna, Pokrovka, Riasne in Sumy oblast and Ohirtseve, Hatyshche, Krasnyi Yar in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives near Novoiehorivka in Luhansk oblast. There were some airstrikes in the areas of Shyikivka, Kharkiv oblast, and Tverdokhlibove, Luhansk oblast. Artillery and mortar attacks targeted the settlements of Hrianikivka, Masiutivka, Synkivka, Kupiansk, Pershotravneve, and Orlianske in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Lyman, more than 30 settlements came under enemy artillery fire, including Nevske and Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast and Yampil, Zakitne, Verkhnekamianske, Ivan-Daryivka and Spirne in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives near Vesele, Donetsk oblast. There were airstrikes in the areas of Spirne, Klishchiyivka, Andriivka, and Bila Hora in Donetsk oblast. More than 25 settlements suffered from enemy artillery shelling, including Nikiforivka, Vasylivka, Zaliznianske, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, and Bohdanivka in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka, Avdiivka, Tonenke, Sievierne, Vodiane, Pervomaiske and Nevelske in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

Towards Mariinka, Ukrainian defense forces continue to hold back the russian offensive in the vicinity of Mariinka, Donetsk oblast. Krasnohirivka, Marinka, Pobieda, Novomykhailivka, Kostiantynivka, Katerynivka in Donetsk oblast came under artillery fire.

Towards Shakhtarsk, more than 10 settlements suffered from enemy artillery shelling, including Novoukrainka, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Shakhtarske, Blahodatne, and Urozhaine in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the area of Mala Tokmachka, Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were airstrikes in the areas of Orikhiv and Robotyno, Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy’s artillery shelling affected more than 20 settlements, including Mahdalynivka, Lukianivske, Pavlivka, Piatikhatky, and Plavni in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the enemy conducted airstrikes near Beryslav, Odradokamianka, Lvove, Kherson in Kherson oblast and Izmail in Odesa oblast. Kherson, Yantarne, Veletenske, Kizomys, Sofiivka, Shyroka Balka in Kherson oblast suffered from enemy artillery shelling.

At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct offensive operations towards Melitopol, consolidating their positions and conducting counter-battery operations.

 Aviation of the Ukrainian defense forces conducted 1 strike on the control center, 10 strikes on buildups and 1 strike on the enemy’s anti-aircraft missile system. 

Rocket and artillery units struck 2 command posts, 1 buildup of personnel, weapons and military equipment, and 2 artillery pieces at enemy firing positions.


Yuriy Taranyuk, the representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, reports that russia handed over the bodies of 12 Ukrainian servicemen who were considered prisoners of war. Previously, there were no reports from russia about their health deterioration. 

According to Ukrainian Armor LLC, production of 120-mm mortar rounds has been established with two NATO countries. Ukraine’s defense forces are already receiving thousands of new mortar rounds.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, said that russian troops are not engaged in active massive assault operations but continue shelling Ukrainian military positions and settlements. According to him, russians are focusing on Vovchansk and Kupiansk directions.

Press service of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office informed that russian forces launched a missile attack on Mykhailivtsi village of Chkalovske community at around 10 am. According to preliminary data, the enemy used an X-35 missile, damaging the warehouse of a civilian enterprise.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy shelled Chkalivske, Chuhuiv region, with two missiles (presumably S-300) at 8:30 pm yesterday. Two missiles hit near the administrative building, where a cultural centre, a cafe, a village council and a gym are located. The building was damaged.

Yesterday the enemy attacked settlements of Izium, Chuhuiv and Kupiansk regions with artillery, mortars and other weapons.

As a result of the MRL shelling of Shyikivka village, Izium region, 5 private buildings were damaged. A 65-year-old woman was injured and hospitalized in moderate condition. In Cherneshchyna village, Izium region, private buildings were damaged. In Novoserhiivka village, Izium region, and Hlushkivka village, Kupiansk region, fires broke out in the fields due to shelling.

Mine clearance is ongoing. Yesterday pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 7.5 hectares of territory and defused 57 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

Anastasiia Miedviedieva, Spokeswoman of Donetsk Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that the enemy shelled Avdiivka and Iskra village. Avdiivka was shelled with artillery, two men were injured and Iskra village in Volnovakha region hit with S-300 missile systems, injuring a woman.

The photo exhibition, which was first presented in Uzhhorod on the Train of Unity day was launched on the route Uzhhorod – Sloviansk – Kramatorsk, has moved to the premises of the railway station in Kramatorsk. The photos show the work of the railway during the evacuation since the beginning of the full-scale war.

Yesterday russians killed 3 civilians in Torske and injured 4 more in the region.

Towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar and Novoukrainka were under attack. A former school and a shop were damaged in Iskranof Komar community.

Towards Donetsk, Avdiivka was under two massive shelling in the morning, four streets were hit. Krasnohorivka and Kostiantynivka of Marinka community were also attacked.

Towards Horlivka, in Toretsk community, 1 person was injured in Pivnichne and a boiler house in Niu York damaged. In Chasiv Yar community, 3 apartment buildings and 3 private buildings were damaged. Vasiukivka and Rozdolivka, Soledar community were targeted.

Towards Lysychansk, 3 people were killed and 1 injured in Torske of Lyman community, 1 more person was injured in Zakitne. In Siversk, 1 person was injured and 2 buildings destroyed. In Zvanivka, 4 buildings were destroyed and 4 damaged.

Valerii Salasenko, a resident of Sviatohirsk, lives in a damaged house and has taken care of more than forty animals abandoned by their owners who left the town due to the war. The man did not leave the town during the hostilities and occupation.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the invaders are not reducing artillery pressure on the oblast. Svatove, Kreminna and Bilohorivka regions are under daily attack with aviation applied more purposefully. For instance, yesterday they focused on Serebrinka forestry. In response, the Defence Forces are inflicting heavy losses on the enemy, both in personnel and equipment. The invaders need considerable time to restore their reserves.

The invaders are rushing to passport the elderly. Representatives of the occupation administration of Markivka region personally visit homes and hold propaganda conversations with pensioners. They promise to help with food after receiving russian-type documents. When this argument does not work, they threaten that these people will not be allowed to see a doctor without a russian passport.

The register of debtors for utilities is growing in Novopskov region. At first, people were cut off from electricity for small debts. Later, the gas company made the same. Those who exceeded the annual limit have to pay almost twice as much for each cubic metre consumed. If the excess is even bigger, the price triples. Residents of the community under occupation are already receiving relevant debt receipts.

Roman Vlasenko, Head of Sievierodonetsk Regional Military Administration, informed that the number of pre-election mass events is increasing in the occupied territory. In the absence of russian passports, the movement between cities is restricted and it is impossible to find a job and receive social benefits. Instead of salaries, Azot JSC provides humanitarian aid. The laws of the russian federation do not work to protect the population in the so-called ‘lpr’.

Based on the information provided by Luhansk RMA, the delegation of Luhansk oblast took part in the 6th International Veterans Forum. Officials presented a new state veterans’ policy involving adaptation, rehabilitation and creation of opportunities for self-realization of defenders. The Veteran’s Assistant institution is being established where special service offices for veterans will be trained.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

On the occasion of the Day of the State Flag, a special flag of Ukraine with the signatures of Ukrainian soldiers from the frontline was hoisted in Kyiv. President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov, Head of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov attended the ceremony. In the future, this flag will be displayed in the National Museum of the War for Independence.

The third International Summit of the Crimean Platform, dedicated to Ukraine’s vision of the future of the temporarily occupied Crimea and security issues in the Black Sea region, has started in Kyiv. President of Hungary Katalin Novak, President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić arrived in the capital to participate in the summit. The event is held in a hybrid format, with 61 countries participating.

President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in Kyiv for the first time. He visited Bucha and honoured the memory of those who died during the кussian occupation near the Church of St Andrew the First-Called.

Ukraine and Moldova will enhance joint control at the state border. Denys Shmyhal, Prime Minister of Ukraine reported that this agreement was reached during a meeting in Kyiv with Prime Minister of Moldova, Dorin Recean. According to him, the parties also discussed cooperation on further European integration of the countries.

According to Anatolii Fedoruk, City Mayor, the reconstruction of a multi-storey building at 101 Vokzalna Street has begun in Bucha. It was damaged during the full-scale russian invasion in February-March 2022. This facility has been included in the state reconstruction programmes and received an estimated UAH 91 million.

The exhibition project Mariupol Unconquered has opened at the Lavra City Art Gallery in Kyiv. The event is dedicated to the celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day. The exhibition will run until September 21. According to the City State Administration, the project was launched in 2022 as a manifestation of support for Mariupol by Ukrainian artists and artists from around the world. Over the year of its existence, the exhibition has toured Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, and Germany.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, since the beginning of the full-scale war, 159 orphans and children deprived of parental care have moved to Zhytomyr oblast, including 8 family-type orphanages and 5 foster families. Some of them returned to their places of permanent residence after the de-occupation of the territories. As of today, 86 children still live in the oblast, including: 5 family-type children’s homes (31 children), 4 foster families (11 children) and 44 children in care.

Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration reported that 4 191 children and 904 teachers will be able to start full-time and mixed forms of education in Zhytomyr oblast. In the new academic year, 21 general secondary education institutions, 15 pre-school education institutions, 1 out-of-school education institution will open their doors to students.

Mykola Klymovych, Honorary Ambassador of Zhytomyr region and master of folk art, officially presented his exhibition “Ovruch Straw” in France. The event is dedicated to the Independence Day of Ukraine.

Sumy oblast

At around 10 a.m., a russian Shahed drone hit a school in Romny. As a result of the attack a two-story building was destroyed and 4 people – a school principal, her deputy, a secretary and a librarian – died under the rubble. Also, four people were wounded. Work is underway to eliminate the consequences of the enemy attack – 118 personnel and 21 units of equipment of the State Emergency Service are working at the site of the attack.

According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, at night and in the morning of August 23, the russians fired 6 times at the border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 26 mortar bombs fired. Khotin, Druzhbivka, and Svesa communities were shelled.

It is reported that as a result of the shelling of Seredyno-Buda by the russian military on August 23, the branch of the Svesa Forestry of the State Enterprise Forests of Ukraine was damaged. As a result of the shelling, a crane was completely destroyed, 3 cars damaged, windows smashed and the roof of the hangar damaged.

On August 22, the russians opened fire 20 times at the border area. There were 115 explosions. Velyka Pysarivka, Seredyno-Buda, Krasnopillia, Khotin, Druzhba, Esman, and Bilopillia communities were under enemy fire. In Seredyno-Buda community, enemy kamikaze drones damaged a multi-storey building – 4 civilians were wounded and 7 private cars damaged.

Chernihiv oblast

Over the past 24 hours, russian troops opened fire 18 times on the border area of Chernihiv oblast from their territory. According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Snovsk and Semenivka communities were shelled. There were 95 shells fired from mortars, multiple rocket launchers and barrel artillery towards Bleshnya, Orlykivka, Leonivka, and Karpovych, as well as 7 shells from multiple rocket launchers near Klyusy.

According to Oleksandr Lomako, Acting Mayor of Chernihiv, the authorities plan to allocate UAH 40 million to restore damaged buildings and school No. 3.

According to Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, financial support will be provided to the families of those killed or wounded in the rocket attack on the drama theater on August 19.

A French delegation headed by Gael Weissier, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Ukraine, visited Chernihiv oblast. According to Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the RMA, the guests inspected the destruction caused by the enemy during the fighting last year and the consequences of the russian terrorist attack on August 19. The guests saw restoration works of damaged facilities, including temporary bridges provided by French partners.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the regional council, the russians attacked Nikopol twice:  with a drone and with artillery. The enemy attacked Nikopol region twice in one day. They shelled Marhanets community with artillery. 

“Live, Ukraine!” photo exhibition was opened at the House of Arts in Dnipro. It is timed to coincide with Independence Day. Three dozen photographs by various authors – professional photographers, journalists, military personnel, and amateur photographers – capture what Ukraine has been going through during the war.

An amulet decoration called “For the Battle”was transferred to the collection of the Museum of the contemporary russian-Ukrainian war in Dnipro. Its author, Iryna Hubanova,  master of fine metalworking,  made the ornament manually using the moulding technique. It is a motanka doll (rag doll) holding a weapon. The historical museum is preparing a performance to collect material for the three-metre-high sculpture of the motanka doll.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Five defenders from the Kalynivka community in Vinnytsia oblast who perished defending Ukraine have been awarded. The awards were solemnly handed over to the families of the defenders.

Almost a thousand IDPs have been accommodated at the Restart summer camp in Severynivka community in Vinnytsia oblast since its opening. During a week-long shift, mothers and their children attend various activities, including psychological training and trips.

Kirovohrad oblast

According to Andrii Raikovych, Head of the Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, schools of the regional centre are starting to implement an educational project called Safety Classes to teach students the rules of fire and mine safety, first aid training, and civil protection.

Poltava oblast

According to Dmytro Lunin, Head of the Poltava Regional Military Administration, 33 houses were restored by workers from Poltava oblast: 20 houses in Pravdyne and 13 Chkalove in Kherson oblast. More than 60 builders from Poltava oblast are currently repairing almost 70 households.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, a “day of support and beauty” was organized for women who lost relatives in the russian-Ukrainian war. Experts gave advice on how to take better care of themselves, and each participant had access to beauty services.

In Zvenyhorod, residents of the village raised over UAH 33K for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at a charity fair.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the enemy launched 97 strikes on Zaporizhzhia oblast. 24 settlements were affected. The occupiers conducted 84 artillery strikes on Mahdalynivka, Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Levadne, Stepove, Piatyhatky, Pavlivka, Kamianske, and other towns and villages along the front line. There was a missile strike on Zaporizhzhia, as well as an aviation strike on Yehorivka, six UAV attacks on Malynivka and Novodarivka, and four MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) shelling attacks on Prymorske, Lukianivske, and Novodarivka. There were 13 reports of residential buildings and infrastructure being destroyed due to the shelling. No casualties were reported.

The General Staff reported that the russian occupiers are attempting to identify unoccupied housing in the temporarily occupied city of Tokmak to seize it. Gas service workers in Tokmak have been instructed to visit apartments under the guise of checks and preparations for the heating season, and compile lists of buildings and flats without owners. However, the preparations for the heating season are not being carried out.

Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who are on the territory of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, reported multiple explosions and gunfire from August 14 to 21. On August 14, the windows of IAEA representatives’ rooms shook from a powerful explosion, and gunfire was heard two days later. Another explosion near the site occurred on August 17, five detonations were audible at some distance from the Zaporizhzhia NPP on August 20, and another five on August 21. IAEA also reported that in the coming days, experts at Zaporizhzhia NPP expect access to the roofs of Reactor Units 1, 2, 5, and 6.

Together with the charitable organization Svit. Ukraine. Polohy, representatives of Zaporizhzhia RMA handed over a mobile laundry complex to the soldiers.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv RMA reported that on August 22 and the morning of August 23, russian troops shelled Kutsurub and Ochakiv communities in Mykolaiv oblast. As a result, a fire broke out, residential buildings were damaged, the roof of a church was damaged, and a household gas pipeline was affected. According to preliminary information, there are no injuries.

Mykolaiv RMA reported that On the occasion of the Day of the State Flag of Ukraine the largest Ukrainian flag in the region was raised in Mykolaiv. The blue and yellow flag was raised in the Young Heroes park. Also, all institutions and facilities under the city’s jurisdiction raised national flags on their buildings.

The Embassy of Ukraine in the State of Israel announced that the Ukrainian-Israeli association NEXUS delivered thousands of food kits and medicines to the residents of Mykolaiv and Kherson oblasts affected by the russian occupiers undermining the Kakhovka HPP. The aid includes children’s nutrition, medical preparations, animal feed, water purification systems and reagents, household chemicals, tactical medicine kits for Ukrainian defense and security forces units.

On the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, an exhibition of photo works by Denys Kryvyi titled “The Beauty of the Southern Bug” opened at the Mykolaiv Regional Local History Museum. Denys had been involved in photography for many years and was the laureate of numerous international photo competitions. In the spring of 2022, he joined the defense of Ukraine as a volunteer and joined the Special Operations Forces. Denys Kryvyi was killed near Bakhmut on May 11, 2023, while trying to save wounded comrades.

The Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Mykolaiv oblast informs that a mobile mine safety class started operating in the village of Ukrainka in Halytsynivka territorial community. 

Yevhenii Poliakov, Deputy Director of the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, says that a memorandum of cooperation was signed with French architect Marten Morris Henri Duplantier in Mykolaiv. He will develop the concept of a park in the city center.

Odesa oblast

According to the South Operational Command, during the night, the russian army attacked Odesa oblast using drones launched from the eastern coast of the Azov Sea. The air defense forces destroyd nine Shahed-136/131 drones, but some hits were recorded. Grain storage facilities and a production-reloading complex in Podunavlie area were damaged. There were no casualties among the civilian population.

Oleksandr Kubrakov, Vice Prime Minister for Restoration and Minister of Development of Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure, reported that russia destroyed 13K tons of grain during a night attack on Izmail on August 23. The agricultural products were intended for Egypt and Romania. Several private grain terminals and warehouses were damaged. As a result of this attack, the export capacity of the Izmail port was reduced by 15%. In total, 270K tons of grain have been destroyed in attacks on ports over the past month.

Natalia Humeniuk, Head of the press center of the South Defense Forces, says that 2 enemy missile boats, one surface vessel and one submarine, are on standby in the Black Sea. They have a total of 12 Kalibr missiles on board. A new russian ship Cyclone is located at its base. 

The Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, informs that Ukrainian boats attacked a russian military aircraft in the territorial waters of Ukraine near Zmiinyi (Snake) Island, in the area of the so-called Boiko’s Towers. The aircraft attempted to attack the ships of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine but received a response. A missile was launched from a Ukrainian combat boat, damaging the russian aircraft, which was forced to leave the scene and fly towards the nearest airfield. 

Germany sent another shipment of humanitarian aid to Odesa. The sister city of Regensburg continues to support the people of Odesa and its visitors. Thanks to foreign partners, the Utility Enterprise Odeskommuntrans received another garbage collection vehicle. The delivery of humanitarian cargo was facilitated by the Rehabilitation Center of Saint Paul in cooperation with the non-profit organization Space-Eye.

At dawn on August 23, the national flag was raised on the Vorontsov Lighthouse in Odesa. The flag measures 4.5 meters by 18 meters. It will adorn the lighthouse for two days, until the evening of August 24.

Kherson oblast

The russian federation’s army shelled a residential building in Kherson. An 81-year-old woman from Kherson sustained injuries to her shoulder and shin. She was hospitalized in a moderate condition.

Around 4 AM, russian military forces dropped two guided bombs on a kindergarten and residential buildings. The shelling caused a fire that was promptly extinguished by firefighters. Six people were injured.

The russian armed formations dropped guided bombs on the city of Beryslav and near the villages Olhivka, Mykolaivka, and Lvove. The occupiers carried out artillery strikes on the city of Beryslav, the villages Burhunka, Zolota Balka, and launched drone attacks on Beryslav again. Residential buildings were damaged. There are no civilian casualties.

On August 22, the enemy conducted 72 shelling incidents, firing 364 shells from mortars, artillery, tanks, Grad MLRS, and UAVs. The enemy shelled Komyshany, Mykolaivka, Mykilske, Veletenske, Kizomys, Stanislav, Tokarivka, Novovorontsovka, Novooleksandrivka, Stepne, and Osokorivka. The city of Kherson was subjected to 27 shells. The russian forces targeted residential quarters, plants, factories, enterprises, critical infrastructure objects, and a hospital in Kherson. They also damaged a shop building and a critical infrastructure object in Beryslav region. A person was killed, and five more wounded. The police initiated 32 criminal proceedings related to military crimes committed by russians in Kherson oblast.

On August 22, a fire occurred in the Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve named after F.E. Falz-Fein. This area is listed in the international Ramsar Convention for the conservation of wetlands. It is a habitat for many rare and endangered plants and animals. The occupiers disregard fire safety rules in the reserve and deliberately destroy our nature.

The General Staff reported that the enemy might deliver rocket and artillery ammunition to the temporarily occupied Skadovsk under the cover of humanitarian cargo. The russian occupiers and collaborators in Skadovsk are actively discussing the preparation of “welcomes” for the territories of Kherson oblast under Ukrainian control.

The russian FSB are conducting raids in Kiyaze-Hryhorivka, temporarily occupied Kherson oblast, to search for and identify pro-Ukrainian citizens and Ukrainian resistance forces. FSB agents set up checkpoints, check mobile phones for the presence of SIM cards from Ukrainian mobile operators among civilian citizens. Also, during the ongoing check, which has been going on for five days in Kniaze-Hryhorivka, the occupiers stole about 20 cars from local residents. Houses from which Ukrainian citizens moved to Ukrainian-controlled territory are being looted and confiscated for the benefit of russia. Local collaborators actively assist the FSB agents.

Juvenile prevention workers greeted children on the Day of the State Flag in all communities on the right bank of Kherson oblast, where the security situation allowed. They handed out flags, blue and yellow bracelets, and explained the history of the Ukrainian flag and the meaning of its colors. Children from Kherson oblast adorned their clothes with national symbols, held flags that their parents hid during the russian occupation and miraculously preserved.

With the support of USAID and the DOBRE program by Global Communities, Kuchubeivka community received a mini-excavator. The new equipment will be used to eliminate the consequences of russian aggression.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Laptops, power banks, a Mavic quadcopter, a charging station and a solar panel were delivered to the 100th Volyn Brigade of the territorial defense. The charitable foundation We Believe in Ukraine helped to fulfill the request from the military. 

Zakarpattia oblast

A large delegation from Vysocina region of the Czech Republic, led by Hetman Vítzeslav Šrek, arrived in Transcarpathia. Among the guests were representatives of all political parties in the region, the regional government, and the mayor of Jihlava, Petr Ryška. According to the RMA, foreign diplomats supported the construction of a rehabilitation center for the military in Uzhhorod.  

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhnyi awarded the Golden Cross to Marta Demianchuk, a combat medic of the 10th separate mountain assault brigade Edelweiss. Also, the honorary badge Steel Cross was awarded to the former commander of the 102nd Brigade of the TRO, Colonel Volodymyr Lohvinenko, for his significant contribution to the protection and defense of the Motherland from the enemy. 

Lviv oblast

Lviv RMA reports that as part of the Side by Side project, two teams from Sokal region are replacing windows and roofs of private homes in the village of Nova Zoria damaged by enemy missiles. The village is located a few dozen kilometers from the front line. It was released as a result of a successful counteroffensive by the Ukrainian Armed Forces last year.  The village has fifty houses, each with varying degrees of damage: some were hit by shrapnel, and others were damaged by enemy shelling.  Lviv oblast took under its patronage Bila Krynytsia, Nova Zoria and Tavriiske. In total, the oblast plans to restore more than 300 facilities as part of the Side by Side project.

Rivne oblast

During the National Flag Day celebrations, Vitalii Koval, Head of Rivne Regional Military Administration, presented the highest regional award, Glory of Rivne Region to Junior Sergeant Oleksii Liakhovchuk, a reconnaissance medic of the Special Reconnaissance Company of the military unit A1994. In June this year, under artillery fire, he provided timely first aid to 5 wounded soldiers and took an active part in evacuating them from the battlefield.

In Rivne oblast, more than 70% of school shelters were inspected. The inspections are ongoing. The state and readiness of shelters in educational institutions in Rivne oblast was discussed at an online meeting led by Serhii Podolin, first Deputy Head of the Regional State Administration. The event was attended by representatives of the Department of Education and Science of the Regional State Administration and local communities.

On the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine, a group of children of the fallen defenders of Rivne oblast unfurled the flag of Ukraine and the flag of Rivne Berlin (Germany).

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil Regional Council bans the procession of supporters of the UOC (MP) to the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra. The relevant decision was communicated to law enforcement agencies. 

An exhibition of paintings created by wounded soldiers while undergoing treatment and rehabilitation in Ternopil medical facilities was opened in Ternopil. Artist Rustam Davletov and volunteer from Rubizhne, Olena Khmelnytska, are conducting master classes on painting for the military.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

A commission is working in the communities that suffered the most during the latest russian attack and is recording the damage. Local residents, utility workers and volunteers, are replacing the torn roofs on the houses and replacing windows. Oleksandr Tkach, Head of one of the villages, says that almost every household in Medzhybizh community was damaged by the blast wave.

Chernivtsi oblast

Ruslan Zaparaniuk, Head of Chernivtsi Regional Branch of the UBA, met with Taras Shevchenko, Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.  The meeting focused on the main vectors of development, European integration in the field of culture, and the overall situation in the media and cultural environment in Ukraine and Bukovyna. 

Ruslan Zaparaniuk, Head of the RMA, presented the well-deserved awards to the border guards and congratulated the 31st Border Guard Detachment named after Major General Oleksandr Pilkevych on the Day of the unit.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

In September, the International Court of Justice will hold hearings on russia’s objections to the genocide charges. The hearings will be held from September 18 to 27 at the Peace Palace in The Hague.

As the President of Ukraine announced on Twitter Luxembourg joined the G7 declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine.

After a meeting with President Jakob Milatovic, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Montenegro has also joined the G7 Declaration on Security Assurances for Ukraine.

After meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday, August 22, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said that his country would provide Ukraine with a new military aid package worth 30 million euros.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina Željko Komšić and member of the Presidency Denis Bečirović. They discussed the prospects for strengthening cooperation between the countries. Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina also took part in the summit of the international Crimean Platform.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with President of Moldova Maia Sandu on developing partnership and joint counteraction to russian aggressive policies and hybrid threats. They also discussed alternative routes for grain exports.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo held talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who later announced that Finland would provide Ukraine with the 18th defense support package. During the visit, Orpo visited Irpin, where Finland built houses for those who lost their homes.

The President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, arrived in Ukraine. He visited Kyiv and Bucha and honored the memory of those killed during the russian occupation.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda arrives in Kyiv to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day.

As reported by the Danish Armed Forces, 8 Ukrainian pilots arrived at the Skridstrup military airbase in Denmark along with 65 people who will be trained to maintain F-16 aircraft. 

 The Minister of Defense of the Netherlands, Keesa Ollongren, reports that the Netherlands started training Ukrainian pilots. She also added that the exact number of F-16s to be delivered to Ukraine is still being discussed.

Vadym Omelchenko, Ambassador of Ukraine to France, says that Ukraine has already received all of the SCALP long-range cruise missiles that the French government promised to provide as part of the first batch of aid.

Britain will provide Ukraine with $245 million to buy nuclear fuel. According to British Energy Minister Grant Shapps, the aid will ensure that Ukraine does not receive nuclear fuel from russia in the future.

The cargo vessel delivered 2 new FPB 98 MKI patrol boats to the Black Sea, which were built for the Maritime Guard of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. On Monday, this ship passed through the Bosphorus Strait. The video was posted by Turkish marine spotter Yörük Işık on his Twitter page. 

Ukrainian Armor LLC cooperates with two NATO member states and is increasing the supply of 120 mm mortar rounds for the Ukrainian army. Ukraine’s defense forces are already receiving thousands of new mortar rounds. They are manufactured using the latest technology and in accordance with NATO standards.

Latvia will transfer 38 more cars confiscated from drunk drivers to Ukraine. According to a government decree, the 6 vehicles are intended for the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, including army units and non-profit enterprises and organizations. The total market value of these 6 cars is 127,859 euros.

Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal informs that Ukraine and Poland will establish a joint border crossing point. The official also noted that the government plans to create 9 border crossing points with the EU and modernize 13 more to build border infrastructure.
