What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The russian army carried out 22 aviation strikes and conducted 30 artillery bombardments from rocket systems on the positions of Ukrainian military and populated areas. Due to russian terrorist attacks, there are casualties and injuries among the civilian population. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure have been damaged.

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile and aviation strikes.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, the operational situation did not change.

Towards Siversk and Sloboda, the russian army conducted an aviation strike in the area southwest of Iskryskivschyna in Sumy oblast. The enemy carried out mortar and artillery attacks on more than 20 populated areas, including Karpovychi and Bohdanove in Chernihiv oblast; Tovstodubove, Volfyne, and Novooleksandrivka in Sumy oblast; as well as Veterynarne, Izbyzke, Hatyshche, Vovchansk, and Vilcha in Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk direction, the russian army carried out an aviation strike west of Mykolaivka. They conducted unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Synkivka, Kharkiv region. Russian artillery and mortar shelling targeted populated areas such as Topoli, Masyutivka, Kyslivka, and Berestove in Kharkiv oblast. 

Towards Lyman, russian troops conducted aviation strikes in the areas of Shyikivka, Terniv, Pyskunivka, and Vesele, Donetsk oblast. Russian artillery shelling affected around 15 populated areas, including Nevske, Bilohorivka in Luhansk oblast, and Torske, Verkhniokamianske, and Spirne in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Bakhmut, the russian army carried out unsuccessful offensive actions in the Kurdiumivka area, Donetsk region. It launched aviation strikes in the areas of Vesele, Klishchiivka, and Kurdiumivka, Donetsk oblast. Over 20 populated areas were hit by russian artillery shelling, including Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Klishchiivka, Stupochky, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Avdiivka, populated areas like Keramik, Stepove, Orlivka, Avdiivka, Siverske, and Pervomaiske, Donetsk oblast were targeted by russian artillery shelling.

Towards  Mariinka, the Armed Forces of Ukraine continue to contain the russian troops’ advance in Marinka area, Donetsk oblast. The russian army conducted an aviation strike in the area of Krasnohorivka, Donetsk oblast. Populated areas like Krasnohorivka, Marinka, Pobeda, Kurakhove, Katerynivka, and Novomykhailivka in Donetsk oblast were hit by russian artillery attacks.

Towards Shakhtarsk direction, russian soldiers carried out an aviation strike in the area of Staromykhailivka, Donetsk oblast. Russian artillery shelling affected Vodyane, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Zolota Nyva, Blahodatne, and Urozhayne in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, the russian army conducted an aviation strike in the area of Robotyne, Zaporizhzhia oblast. Over 30 populated areas, including Novodarivka, Chervona Krynytsya, Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv, and Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia oblast, were hit by russian artillery shelling.

Towards Kherson, russian troops carried out aviation strikes in the areas of Olhivka and Sadove, Kherson oblast. Russian artillery shelling affected over 20 populated areas, including Novodmytrivka, Beryslav, Tyahinka, Tokarivka, Ponyativka, and Antonivka in Kherson oblast.


At the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue their offensive operation towards Melitopol and Berdyansk, consolidating their positions on the achieved boundaries, and undertaking counter-battery measures.

The Air Forces of Ukraine carried out 9 strikes on areas where russian personnel are concentrated during the day.

Rocket forces and artillery units targeted 1 command post and 3 artillery assets in firing positions of the russian army throughout the day.


Andriy Yusov, the representative of the Intelligent Forces of Ukraine, informed that Ukrainian servicemen captured 200 russians in several weeks of fighting. He also added that the occupiers began to surrender voluntarily more often.

The head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed in the Conditions of Armed Conflict, OGP Yurii Belousov informed that the main force of the explosion in Chernihiv on August 19, 2023 was aimed at people who were around the drama theater. “Russia used the Iskander-M missile. And there are several settings for this missile. It was configured to explode in mid-air. This type of adjustment is made in order to increase the maximum damage of manpower in the open area,” he noted.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy shelled Kupiansk around 7 am. A 40-year-old man was seriously injured. Currently, doctors are fighting for his life.

A man born in 1952 was killed in Vovchansk as a result of hostile shelling. Fires broke out in a residential building and in an unused medical facility. Rescuers extinguished the fires.

The enemy has been shelling Kupiansk all day.  A 35-year-old emergency medical assistant was injured while providing aid.  As a result of the artillery shelling of downtown, 11 civilians were injured. 7 people are in critical and 3 in moderate condition. 1 person received medical aid on the spot. After 2 pm, the invaders repeatedly shelled downtown with artillery, destroying and damaging 5 cars of residents, damaging the Nova Poshta office and starting several fires.

Yesterday settlements of Bohodukhiv, Kharkiv, Chuhuiv, Izium and Kupiansk regions were targeted.

In Kupiansk, a private building was damaged by shelling and a fire broke out on the territory of a meat processing plant.

As a result of the shelling of Kruhliakivka village, Kupiansk region, a fire broke out on the territory of the forestry.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian troops conducted an air strike near Kyslivka towards Kupiansk. At least seven settlements were under artillery and mortar attacks. 

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv RMA, informed that four private houses were damaged in Kozacha Lopan settlement, Kharkiv region.

A building of an agricultural enterprise was damaged in Cherneshchyna village, Izium region, as a result of the shelling.

In Oleksandrivka, Bohodukhiv region, the shelling significantly damaged warehouses and outbuildings of civilian enterprises.

Artillery shelling of Vilcha village, Chuhuiv region, damaged 11 private buildings, a kindergarten, a boarding house, a bakery and a church.

Mine clearance is ongoing. Yesterday pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 3.3 hectares of territory and defused 116 explosive ordnance.

Donetsk oblast

According to Donetsk police, they documented 18 hostile attacks on civilians. Also russian troops used R-77 missiles, S-300 air defence systems, drones, Smerch, Uragan, Grad MRLs, artillery, tanks and mortars. The enemy attacked Avdiivka, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Sloviansk, Toretsk, Chasiv Yar cities, Velyka Novosilka, Kurdiumivka and Shcherbynivka settlements and Novoukrainka, Rozlyv, Yurkivka villages. 25 civilian objects were damaged, specifically 15 residential buildings, enterprises, petrol stations, garages and transport.

The enemy launched two S-300 missiles at Kramatorsk, destroying industrial workshops.

Moreover russians hit Kostiantynivka with an R-77 missile and Smerch MRLs. Four private buildings, garages and a car were damaged.

An apartment building in Avdiivka was destroyed by a tank shelling.

The invaders launched a drone strike on Sloviansk, damaging a grain processing plant.

Donetsk RMA reported that towards Volnovakha, Vuhledar suffered 17 attacks and one kamikaze drone strike. A building and an outbuilding were damaged in Novoukrainka. In Velyka Novosilka, 2 streets were shelled with Uragan MRLs, with no casualties.

Towards Donetsk, Kurakhove, Kurakhivka and Trudove of Kurakhove community were shelled.

Towards Horlivka, 1 person was injured in Toretsk. 12 buildings there and 2 more in Shcherbynivka were damaged.

Towards Lysychansk, 2 buildings in Siversk and 1 building in Zvanivka were damaged. Lyman community suffered 8 attacks.

Department of Education and Science of the Donetsk Regional Administration informed that all universities are temporarily operating outside the region. All 34 vocational pre-university and 13 higher education institutions in the region have been moved to safer regions of Ukraine.

Police rescued a sick and exhausted dog in Kurakhove. Volunteers saw the dog and established its approximate location but were not able to take it away. Police officers found the dog and took it to Dnipro for treatment.

Luhansk oblast

While preparing for an offensive, russians can conduct artillery training for several days. They do not stop shelling settlements near the contact line for a single day, even in the absence of sufficient reserves for an assault in a specific direction. Nevske is constantly under attack. Yesterday the enemy shelled Bilohorivka with both artillery and aircraft. Air strikes also hit Serebrianka forestry, where our soldiers are also holding the line.

Back in March, russians announced the collection of documents for the recalculation of pensions. Due to the extremely poor organisation, people are given coupons to submit documents six months in advance. The invaders are not interested in speeding up the process.

In Sievierodonetsk, the invaders have chosen some of the most survived nine-storey buildings for demonstration repairs. At the same time, they are practically not interested in buildings in the old districts of the city. Last autumn and winter they were flooded from top to bottom because of the holes in the roofs, which could be quickly repaired and save the house. They don’t pay attention to these buildings now either.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The KCSA reported that an exhibition of damaged equipment of the russian invaders will be held in the capital on Independence Day. The city government will not arrange mass holiday events.

Kyiv RMA reported that the oblast became a participant in the experimental project “Security specialist in the educational environment”. The goal of the project is to identify and eliminate threats to the safety of schoolchildren. For this purpose, a corresponding position will be introduced in the educational institutions of the oblast. Specialists must undergo special training according to the appropriate program on the basis of educational institutions in the structure of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“Ukrzaliznytsia” reported that over a thousand people were transported in one month by evacuation wagons of train #779 Sumy – Kyiv, which began running on July 18, 228 of them are children. Migrants who want to stay in the capital are accommodated in a modular town. The evacuation wagon is designed only for Ukrainians from the occupied territories, who cross the border with russia at the only checkpoint operating in the Krasnopillia community in Sumy oblast.

The Taras Shevchenko National Award awarding ceremony took place in Borodyanka. The event was held in the central square near the monument to Shevchenko, who survived the shelling during the occupation. This year, there are several laureates in five nominations, including Tamara Horikha-Zernya with her debut fiction novel “Dotsia” and Natalka Vorozhbyt, who, together with her team, received an award for the play “Bad Roads”. Both works are dedicated to events, people’s lives and their relationships at the beginning of the 2014 war.

Free “Start your own business” business training for women  will be held in Kyiv oblast on September 8-10. The training is organized by the company SILab Ukraine with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Germany and international public organizations.

“KrymSOS” is organizing a charity screening and discussion of short films about the Crimean Tatars in Kyiv on August 21. During the event, funds will be collected for cars for 116 OMBr, which protect Ukraine in the Melitopol direction.

Zhytomyr oblast

Head of Zhytomyr RMA Vitaliy Bunechko said that the city became the fifth one where the Center for Veterans’ Development was established. It will function on the basis of Zhytomyr Polytechnic State University and will become a platform for the integration of veterans into civilian life. The center will also train future assistants of veterans who, after victory, will help Ukrainian soldiers return to a civil life.

The State Emergency Service of the oblast reported that another evacuation train with forced migrants from Donbas arrived in Berdychev on August 19. This time, 20 people including three children and one person with disabilities came for free. People were met at the railway station by rescuers, policemen, volunteers, representatives of local authorities, the Red Cross Society of Ukraine, the “Caritas Berdychiv UGCC” charity fund.

The city council reported that military personnel of the 138th battalion of the Territorial Defense of Zhytomyr received quadcopters, anti-drone devices and professional Motorola walkie-talkies. The total cost of the equipment that was transferred to the military unit is more than UAH 2 million.

Sumy oblast

Sumy RMA reported that the enemy carried out 26 shellings of the border territories and settlements of the oblast, 248 explosions were recorded. Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Velika Pysarivka, Seredina-Buda, Shalyhine, Znob-Novhorodske and Khotyn communities came under shelling. Private houses and households were damaged. The military of the russian federation carried out strikes from mortars, MLRS, grenade launchers, AGS, self-propelled guns, launched 20 rockets from a helicopter.

Sumy RMA reported that at night and in the morning, the russians carried out 4 shellings of border communities, 20 explosions were recorded. The communities of Velika Pysarivka, Esman, Khotyn, Bilopillia came under shelling. The enemy fired with AGS-17 (12 explosions), a mortar, carried out an airstrike from a helicopter, and fired 7 unguided air missiles. 

Chernihiv oblast

Oleksandr Lomako, the acting mayor of Chernigov reported that a search and rescue operation in Chernihiv after the russian terrorist attack on August 19 was completed. As a result of the rocket attack on the city center, 163 people were injured: 7 people were killed, 156 were injured, 41 people are in the city’s hospitals, 5 of them are in serious condition.

The chief doctor of the regional children’s hospital, Tetyana Lebedeva, said that 11 injured children were sent to the regional children’s hospital after the russian rocket attack. According to her, two of them were in the intensive care unit, another child was on the operating table.

Head of Chernihiv RMA Vyacheslav Chaus said that previously more than 500 homes were damaged in the city, about 60 of which are near the site of the impact. The police also recorded damage to 64 civilian cars. An examination of the damaged private house near the site of the rocket attack is underway, and points for receiving statements from the victims have also been deployed in the building of the Chernihiv District Police Department.

Oleksandr Lomako, the acting mayor of Chernigov reported that the blast wave damaged two kindergartens and the building of school No. 3, the building of the city council and the department of citizens’ appeals. A part of the trolley bus contact network was also damaged, which has already been restored. All communal services dismantle the debris and work on the elimination of the consequences.

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine reported that a russian missile attack destroyed the Taras Shevchenko Chernihiv Regional Academic Music and Drama Theater and damaged the architectural monument of national importance – the Pyatnytskyi Church. The ministry noted that the historical center of Chernihiv – a city with a thousand-year history – is a candidate for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Ministry calls on the world community to isolate the aggressor and also to deprive russia of its membership in UNESCO.

During the past day, the communities of Novhorod-Siverskyi, Snovsk, Horodnyanka, and Semenivka were subjected to enemy shelling. As reported in the SBGS, the russians shelled the border areas of Chernihiv oblast 8 times from their territory – a total of 45 mortar and barrel artillery hits were recorded.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Regional Council, the enemy shelled Nikopol with artillery last night. A 74-year-old woman was wounded. She was hospitalised in a moderate condition. Five private houses, four outbuildings and power lines were damaged.

Serhii Lysak, Head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, said that during the day, Nikopol region was subjected to enemy artillery shelling several times. The regional centre, as well as Marhanets and Pokrovske communities, were shelled. Two private houses, 2 outbuildings, and cars were damaged. russian troops also attacked Zelenodolsk community of Kryvyi Rih region.

Serhii Lysak, Head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, informed that 40 children have left for the city of Miskolc, Hungary. These are children of the military, from large families and IDPs. 40 children from Dnipropetrovsk oblast left for a holiday in Austria, and 40 – in Italy.

A shelter was set up for 35 families from Mariupol in Dnipro. It is located in a social hostel for IDPs and can accommodate 130 people. The shelter is equipped with folding beds, mattresses, sleeping bags, benches, chairs and lanterns.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Vinnytsia volunteers make buggies for Ukrainian reconnaissance personnel. Each one is painted and tested before being sent to the frontline. Three such vehicles have already been produced and the work on the fourth one is underway.

Kirovohrad oblast

Hlodosy community of Novoukrainka region in Kirovohrad oblast is to arrange a veterans’ space to help veterans and relatives of deceased soldiers.

Poltava oblast

Viktor Lysak, Director of the Department of Health reported that doctors noted neurotic stress disorders in 8% of children during medical examinations. Most of them emerged due to the full-scale war.

Sloboda forest office reported that Ukrainian soldiers from Poltava oblast received items that are always needed at the front: night vision devices, tactical headphones, cordless saws, T-shirts, socks, and instant food. 

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, local volunteers organised a mini-fest to raise funds for a thermal imager for the Burevii offensive brigade. Visitors were able to take part in tactical medicine training and a masterclass on the partial disassembly and assembly of a Kalashnikov rifle, as well as a masterclass on weaving camouflage nets.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that a 56-year-old man was injured in the shelling of Orikhiv: he was taken to a medical facility.

Yuriy Malashko, Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that the russian army fired 80 times at the towns and villages of Zaporizhzhya oblast over the past day, August 19. 65 artillery attacks were recorded on the territory of Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Mala Tokmachka, Chervarne, Chervone, Yablukove, Preobrazhenka, Pyatikhatky, Plavny and other villages on the front line. 

According to the State Emergency Service, 9 fires caused by russian shelling have been extinguished by rescuers in the Pology region of Zaporizhzhia oblast. 

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitaliy Kim, Head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, said that on the afternoon of August 19 and in the morning of August 20, 2023, the russian army fired artillery at the waters of the Ochakiv community and the channel of the Dnipro-Bug estuary in Mykolaiv oblast. It also struck the city of Ochakiv and the coast during the day. There were no casualties.

Natalia Gumenyuk, Joint Coordination Press Center of the Defense Forces of Southern Ukraine, reported that enemy unmanned aerial reconnaissance was active last night, one Merlin tactical-level drone was destroyed over Mykolaiv oblast. 

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that since the beginning of the war, russians have already killed 503 children in Ukraine, and another 1115 children have been injured. It is noted that the data is not final. Work continues to clarify them in the areas of hostilities, in the temporarily occupied and liberated territories. In particular, 97 children were injured in Mykolaiv oblast, including 19 children who died as a result of the war. 

Odesa oblast

South Operational  Command reported that on August 19, as of 23:00, the russian army deployed one missile carrier equipped with four Kalibr missiles to the Black Sea for combat duty. In addition, there are seven russian ships in the Black Sea and one in the Sea of Azov. The level of missile threat remains high. 

The Odesa-based team of volunteers, Technari, who developed the eAir Defense app, has announced a fundraiser for an important device to improve air defense. The data of this device must not be written down so that enemies do not know our defense secrets. According to Gennadiy Suldin, one of the founders of Technars, who posted on Facebook, one such device has already been bought for 197 thousand hryvnias and is successfully operating in one brigade in the south. Another one needs to be bought for the second brigade, which also wanted to have one. For a donation of UAH 1000, Odesa residents will receive a shell casing from a German Cheetah, which shoots down russian-iranian kamikaze drones near Odesa. After donating, you need to leave a comment under the post with the desired signature. During the first day of the campaign, 80 thousand hryvnias were raised out of the 197 thousand needed to purchase the device.

Odesa City Council reported that the “September 1 without flowers” campaign continues in Odesa. Instead, parents and students are invited to bring humanitarian aid for the military to educational institutions: cold medicine, underwear and socks, cigarettes, coffee and tea, long-term storage food and hygiene products. 

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that russian troops shelled Zolota Balka in the Novooleksandrivska community in Kherson oblast. A 69-year-old man was injured. 

The russian army attacked the village of Kozatske in the Kherson oblast. A tank hit a house, killing one woman and injuring another.

At about 15:30, russian military dropped two explosive devices from a drone on a man walking down the street in Novoberislav, Kherson oblast. He died on the spot.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, over the past day, russian troops shelled more than 15 settlements in the Kherson sector, including Tokarivka, Dudchany, Beryslav, Mykolaivka, Dniprovske, Zorivka and Kizomys with artillery. 

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, reported that on August 19, the russian army attacked Kherson region 77 times. It hit a critical infrastructure facility and the territory of a plant in Kherson. One person was killed and one was injured. 

Olha Shevchenko, a teacher from Blahodatne in the Chornobayiv community, kept a diary during the occupation. “On the contact line” is the title of her diary. She kept it during the occupation, when the village was on the front line. But she wrote about a different conflict: a clash between two worlds and ideologies, good and evil, humanity and opportunism. The diary caught the interest of researchers at the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. Olha Shevchenko handed over her notes to the museum.

With the assistance of Casers, mobile medical teams provided medical assistance to residents of the villages of Tyahyn and Dar’yivka communities during the week. In particular, they provided ultrasound, consultations from a therapist and specialized doctors, and received medicines.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lieutenant General Serhii Naev, Commander of the Combined Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, announced that at the state border in Volyn direction, the number of border patrols was increased, monitoring of the situation on the other side of the state border was organized, combat service and intelligence were strengthened. The state border of Ukraine is densely mined and, in combination with natural obstacles, creates impassable zones for enemy forces.

The Regeneration and Culture: Regional Dimension Forum was held in Lutsk. They discussed ways to restore the sphere of culture in the post-war period.

Zakarpattia oblast

Vasyl Ivancho, Deputy head of the oblast, reported that the RMA is forming a team of ambassadors who will contribute to the strengthening of international cooperation and development of the region.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Up to 150K IDPs live in the oblast. 92 shelters (places of compact living) were opened, where over 3,5K people live. Field mobile teams have been working for over a year, and their experts advise IDPs on the ground and help them solve urgent issues.

Lviv oblast

In the village of Stavchan, the RMA continues to eliminate the consequences of the rocket attack that took place on August 15. In particular, construction and repair works are carried out to strengthen the foundation, restore roofs, windows and doors. 4 cubic meters of construction waste were removed. Assistance points are open 24 hours a day in the settlement. The International Organization for Migration in Ukraine sent 50 repair and construction kits, the NEEKA CF sent mattresses, hygiene products, dishes and bedding.

30 children from the families of war veterans, large families and low-income families of Horodotsk community went to the Forest Land camp in Skoliv region. The trip was financed from the budget of the Horodotsk community.

For 19 hours and 15 minutes, Yurii Fedechko, Director of the With an Angel on his Shoulder CF walked and covered over 95 kilometers in order to collect funds for the continuation of the rehabilitation and recovery of defenders cared for by the foundation, as well as to conclude an agreement with another medical and rehabilitation complex in order to help more soldiers. He collected about UAH 500K.

A traditional Honey Fair was held in Brody, which brought together 35 beekeepers from different parts of Zolochiv region. A festival of honey, Yavoriv toys and pie was held in Yavoriv. During both events, funds were collected for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Rivne oblast

The RMA reported that repair crews from Rivne oblast restored 121 damaged houses in the Kochubeiv community in Kherson oblast (almost 65%) as part of the Side by Side project.

Representatives of public organizations and the Czech media visited Privilena community to sign a Memorandum on cooperation in the field of culture and education, development of the youth environment, ecology and economy.

40 children aged 9-14 from among those whose parents are active military personnel or were killed as a result of the war, as well as children of missing defenders and participants in hostilities, went on vacation to Croatia. Financial provision of accommodation and basic needs during the stay are at the expense of the host party.

Ternopil oblast

By the Day of the city, the Alley of Stars in Ternopil will be replenished with a Twin Cities star. The star will be dedicated to the twin cities for the help and support of Ukraine and the city during the war.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi Philharmonic received a Citroen Jumper minibus with 15 seats from Switzerland. In the beginning of the war, the Philharmonic bus was sent to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Chernivtsi oblast

Henry Mac-Master, Governor of South Carolina, supported the initiative of the group South Carolina Supports Ukraine and announced that on August 24, the state will celebrate the Independence Day of Ukraine. “The Ukrainian community in South Carolina is an active part of our population, enriching our state with its traditions, language, music, dance and culinary heritage,” said Mac-Master.
