It has been the 539th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The enemy launched 7 missiles, 67 air strikes, and 30 MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements. The russian terrorist attacks have killed and wounded civilians, including children. Port infrastructure in Odesa oblast as well as residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were damaged.

The Ukrainian air defense brought down 2 Kh-59 cruise missiles and 13 enemy Shahed-136/131 UAVs. 

Ukraine is still under the threat of missile and air strikes.

There were over 15 combat engagements.

Towards Volyn and Polissia, there were no significant changes. 

Towards Siverschyna and Slobozhanschyna, the invaders fired from mortar and artillery at more than 15 settlements, including Tymonovychi, Bleshnya, Chernihiv oblast, Shalyhyne, Popivka, Myropillya, Sumy oblast, Odnorobivka, Stohnii, Udy, Zelene, Hatyshche, Kharkiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinity of Senkivka, Kharkiv oblast. The settlements of Vilshana, Petropavlivka, Cherneschyna, Kharkiv oblast came under artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Lyman, over 20x settlements, including Nevske, Dibrova, Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast, Siversk, Verkhniokamianske, Sviato-Pokrovske, Vyimka, Donetsk oblast, were shelled from enemy artillery.

Towards Bakhmut, the enemy conducted unsuccessful offensive operations in the vicinity of Bohdanivka, Donetsk oblast. Over 15 settlements, including Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Kalynivka, Ivanivske, Stupochky, Donetsk oblast, were shelled from enemy artillery. 

Towards Avdiivka, under heavy fire from enemy aircraft and artillery, Ukrainian defenders continue to hold back the russian offensive near Avdiivka, Donetsk oblast. The invaders fired from artillery at over 10 settlements, including Oleksandropil, Novokalynove, Avdiivka, Sieverne, Pervomaiske, Nevelske, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Mariinka, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold back the russian offensive in the vicinity of the city of Mariinka, Donetsk oblast. The enemy launched an air strike in the vicinity of Novomykhailivka, Donetsk oblast. The invaders fired from  artillery at over 10 settlements, including Krasnohorivka, Mariinka, Novomykhailivka, Kostiantynivka, Katerynivka, Kurakhove, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Shakhtarsk, the invaders launched air strikes in the vicinity of Urozhaine and Blahodatne, Donetsk oblast. The invaders fired from artillery at over 10 settlements, including Vodyane Bohoiavlenka, Vuhledar, Prechystivka, Velyka Novosilka, Urozhaine, Blahodatne, Donetsk oblast.

Towards Zaporizhzhia, over 20 settlements were shelled from enemy artillery shelling, including Charivne, Huliaipilske, Omelnyk, Novoandriivka, Mali Scherbaky, Piatykhatky, Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Towards Kherson, the adversary fired from artillery at over 10 settlements, including Khreschenivka, Novodmytrivka, Mykolaivka, Sadove, Zelenivka, Kherson oblast, and the city of Kherson. 

At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to conduct the offensive operation towards Melitopol and Berdiansk, consolidating their positions, and conducting counter-battery fire.

The Ukrainian Air Force launched 9 air strikes on the buildup of troops, weapons, and military equipment and 1 air strike on the anti-aircraft missile system.

The Ukrainian rocket and artillery troops hit 1 anti-aircraft missiles system of the enemy.

The press service of “Enerhoatom” reported that the occupiers abducted one more their employee. This employee has been detained by the police for almost a month, the charges brought against him are unknown. There is no contact with the man either.

Petro Andriuschenko, adviser to the mayor of Mariupol, informed that russia exported another 1.5 thousand tons of Ukrainian grain from Mariupol. The vessel is now on its way to the canal, without any identification signs.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Hostilities continue towards Kupiansk. Our defenders successfully repelled the enemy attempts to advance in southeast of Vilshany and east of Petropavlivka and inflicted losses to russians.

Last night, the enemy attacked Pisky-Radkivski village, Izium region, with Shahed drones. The storage facilities of an abandoned agricultural enterprise were damaged. There were no casualties.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that yesterday the enemy massively shelled the settlements of Kharkiv, Chuhuiv, Izium and Kupiansk regions.

Kharkiv State Emergency Service said that several private buildings and outbuildings were damaged as a result of shelling in Vovchansk, Chuhuiv region. Rescuers extinguished a fire in a private building in Vovchansk in 2.5 hours, which started due to russian shelling on the afternoon of 15 August.

In Petropavlivka village, Kupiansk region, 3 buildings were damaged by shelling and fires broke out.

Press service of the Regional Military Administration informed that Cherneschyna of Borove community was hit by a ussian guided bomb at around 8:50 am. A private building was damaged.

Pyrotechnics of the State Emergency Service examined more than 5 hectares of territory and defused 67 explosive ordnance.

Civilians are being evacuated from the communities of Kupiansk region. Another 96 people, including 21 children, 47 women and 4 people with disabilities, were evacuated from dangerous places yesterday. A total of 344 people, including 111 children, have been evacuated since 9 August. They are receiving medical, law, psychological and humanitarian assistance. If necessary, they are provided with free accommodation.

Petrykivka painting is being used to paint the windows in the centre of Kharkiv that were broken after the explosions. Artist Kateryna Kovshar and her students joined the project of another artist, Karina Zhernova from Izium, who paints birds on buildings damaged by shelling.

Donetsk oblast

Hanna Maliar, Deputy Minister of Defence, informed in the morning of 16 August that Ukrainian troops have liberated Urozhaine. The village belongs to Velyka Novosilka Village Military Administration of Volnovakha region. It has been occupied since March 2022.

According to Donetsk Regional Military Administration, yesterday russians killed 4 civilians: 2 in Kramatorsk, 1 in Siversk and Yampil. Another 7 people were injured in the region.

Towards Volnovakha, an outbuilding in Bohoiavlenka was damaged. Maksymivka and Vuhledar were under attack.

Towards Donetsk, russians shelled two streets in Avdiivka with tanks in the morning. An agricultural enterprise in Kurakhove community was shelled from Uragan MRLs.

Towards Horlivka, in Toretsk community, 2 people were injured, 5 buildings and an administrative building damaged in Pivnichne. A building was damaged in Druzhba. The enemy launched 4 barrages of Smerch systems at Kostiantynivka, damaging 9 buildings, a gas pipeline and 2 power lines. In Chasiv Yar community, 4 buildings were damaged. Several buildings were damaged in Rai-Oleksandrivka of Mykolaiv community.

Towards Lysychansk, in Siversk, 1 person was killed and 3 injured, an administrative building destroyed and 2 buildings damaged. In Lyman community, 1 person was killed in Yampil and 1 injured in Torske.

Pavlo Kyrylenko, Head of Donetsk RMA, reported that in the morning russian troops shelled two streets in Avdiivka with tanks. Alsi yesterday russians shelled Kostiantynivka with Smerch missiles, damaging building, a gas pipeline and power lines.

The most difficult situation with water supply is in Pokrovsk community and Bakhmut region. This is due to the closeness of the settlements to the frontline and the destroyed infrastructure.

A community centre for women will be opened in Pokrovskbwhere they will be able to receive psychological, social and law assistance. The hub is currently completing major repairs.

Luhansk oblast

According to Luhansk Regional Military Administration, there are 14 de-occupied settlements on the frontline and there are constant engagements near them. The enemy does not stop the air and artillery pressure on them. Ukrainian military inflict significant damage to the enemy, who has been intensifying its attacks over the past week.

The enemy fails to achieve the desired success in Luhansk oblast. And russian units are losing their combat capability which leads to constant rotations. They send regular troops to the most critical areas of the frontline. The invaders do not stop the pressure from the sky, like, yesterday they shelled Stelmakhivka and Bilohorivka.

Residents of Novodruzhesk and Pryvillia complain about the lack of electricity supply. The power disappeared there last spring and the invaders are not going to fix it. First, they promised to restore it after the results of the pseudo-referendum last year, then after the so-called “first elections”, that will take place in less than a month, but they have not started anything yet. The situation is similar in many districts of Lysychansk. However, near former rubber goods plant, residents are told that electricity will be restored next spring.

Meanwhile, the occupation administration of the so-called “Luhansk People’s Republic” ordered to compile a list of buildings and houses with unlicensed russian satellite equipment. In other words, what people have been buying at their own expense for many years. Specially formed groups will also inspect the direction of signal reception by all satellite facilities, which allegedly should be directed exclusively towards russian federation.

The action plan for the de-occupation of the territories has already been agreed on, each service knows what to do and in what order, after receiving permission from the military.

34 hubs in 18 regions provide assistance to Luhansk IDPs and since May, the list of services in many of them has been significantly expanded.

110 children from Kreminna community had a rest in Smerichka camp of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University.

Ukrainian children with disabilities, who are now in Sweden, gave handmade soft toys for the International Legion soldiers. Swedish and Finnish grandmothers helped them in this work. For almost a year now, the displaced children have been knitting socks for the military in Sweden. The initiators of the project are Oleh Trachuk and his wife from Luhansk.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

900 objects have already been restored in the Hostomel community, 887 of which are objects of the housing fund. According to the regional military administration, a total of 3,250 objects, including 3,166 residential buildings, were damaged in the community as a result of the full-scale russian invasion. Reconstruction began immediately after the liberation of the territory from the occupiers.

Head of Kyiv RMA Ruslan Kravchenko announced that the reconstruction of Lyceum No. 3 in Bucha – one of the educational institutions most damaged by the occupiers – is ongoing. Repair works are carried out with the funds of international aid, Ukrainian benefactors and the local budget. According to him, one of the charitable organizations of the Portuguese city of Cascais undertook the overhaul of the third floor of the lyceum.

On August 15, a ceremony was held in Irpin to hand over small arms and cartridges to Ukrainian police officers from colleagues from Miami. As the National Police reported, these are weapons seized by American colleagues from criminals on the streets, which will become another tool for maintaining order and security, protecting Ukrainians.

The KCSA reported that a modern rehabilitation center will be built in the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv. Repair work in the building will be carried out taking into account the needs of people with special needs, and provision of a shelter is also provided.

Irpin City Council reported that demining service sappers received a report about found explosive objects in the city. They turned out to be 120 mm artillery shells with an explosive device.

A network of unity, support and development is being created in the oblast as part of the project “Mental health – neural network of Kyiv oblast”. Currently, a survey among providers and recipients of psychosocial support services to assess community needs is underway.

Zhytomyr oblast

A project to bring medical services closer together in rural areas, which will be implemented with USAID, has been announced in Zhytomyr oblast. It provides for the diagnosis of diseases and the provision of basic medicines to residents of remote communities of the oblast: the creation of mobile medical teams and pharmacy points, the transportation of patients to medical institutions, the implementation of online psychological help offices in communities.

A football tournament will be held in the regional center in memory of the fallen Marine Dmytro Rud from Zhytomyr, who died in Donetsk during shelling at the age of 20. Football was one of the main hobbies of the young man, who went to the front as a volunteer in 2016 at the age of 18.

A young volunteer from Nizhyn collected over 200,000 hryvnias for the Armed Forces. For more than a year, Katya has been making various jewelry, keychains, pendants and collecting donations for Ukrainian defenders near the central entrance to the Nizhyn Bazaar. The girl already has many certificates, and also collected a whole collection of chevrons from grateful soldiers from the front line.

Sumy oblast

Sumy RMA reported that the russians carried out 26 shelling of the border, 172 explosions were recorded. Znob-Novhorodske, Velika Pysarivka, Seredina-Buda, Esman, Bilopillia, Shalyhine, Mykolayiv, Khotin, Nova Sloboda communities came under shelling. As a result of shelling, one private household was damaged. The enemy fired mortars, barrel artillery and grenade launchers.

At night and in the morning, the enemy carried out 8 shellings of the border territories and settlements of the Sumy oblast, a total of 50 explosions were recorded. As reported in the regional military administration, Krasnopillia, Bilopillia, Yunakivka, Seredina-Buda communities came under shelling. The enemy attacked with mortars and self-propelled guns.

The State Emergency Service of Sumy oblast reported that police explosives officers discovered on the territory of one of the villages of the Krasnopillia community three 125 mm projectiles for a tank gun and part of an RPG shot. A local resident found an explosive object in a field near the road and reported it to the police.

Chernihiv oblast

During the past day, the russians shelled the border of Chernihiv oblast 9 times from their territory. The Snovsk and Semenivka communities were shelled. As reported in the SBGS, 55 mortar strikes were recorded in the direction of the settlements of Karpovichy, Halahanivka, Mykolayvka, Zaliznyi Mist and Bleshnya, and mortar and barrel artillery strikes in the direction of the Yeline settlement.

Chernihiv RMA reported that the government has allocated over UAH 363 million for the construction of military engineering and fortification facilities in the oblast. In general, more than UAH 1.2 billion has been allocated from the reserve fund of the state budget to strengthen the defense lines of the northeastern regions of Ukraine.

Head of Chernihiv RMA Vyacheslav Chaus announced that in 2023 the oblast will receive a total of about UAH 600 million from the state for the restoration of social infrastructure facilities damaged as a result of the armed aggression of the russian federation. According to him, 181 out of 305 such objects have already been restored or are in the process of being restored.

Border guards in Chernihiv oblast received 1,400 tactical first aid kits, equipped according to NATO IFAK standards, which allow providing assistance according to the TCCC protocol. Soldiers of the 105th border detachment named after Prince Volodymyr the Great received first-aid kits from volunteers of “White Stork”, which combined the capabilities of military veterans and US entrepreneurs to provide assistance to Ukraine.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

According to Head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, the enemy attacked Nikopol district again. Nikopol was shelled with MLRS Grad and Marhanets community was shelled with artillery. There are wounded civilians and casualties in Nikopol and Sinelnykove regions. The occupiers shelled Mezhivska community of Sinelnykove region. It is about 160 km from Dnipro. The community borders with Donetsk oblast. 18 years old boy was killed. Six people were injured, including a 2.5-year-old girl. She and another wounded were hospitalised. Two evacuation buses from the village community were engaged, 12 people were evacuated from the danger zone. A psychologist is working with the victims. The shelling damaged 49 houses, a school, cars and a minibus.  There was also a fire at an agricultural enterprise.

According to Head of the regional council Mykola Lukashuk, the occupiers shelled Nikopol and Marhanets community three times during the day with artillery. As a result of the shelling, a 63-year-old resident of Nikopol was wounded. He was hospitalised with mine-blast trauma, shrapnel wounds to the chest and left knee joint. He received all the necessary medical care. He is currently in moderate condition. A cafe, 14 residential buildings, 8 outbuildings, 3 cars, 5 power lines, and solar panels were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Artists from Khmelnytsky oblast handed over an international towel of unity called “The Colour of Vyshyvanka” to the people of Vinnytsia. Artists from 10 regions of the country have already embroidered ornaments on the 12.5-metre-long, 65-centimetre-wide towel. Vinnytsia region became the eleventh region to embroider the cloth.

This year, 5 agricultural enterprises in Vinnytsia oblast became participants in the USAID AGRO programme. With their grants, farmers receive mobile grain storage facilities free of charge, as well as assistance in installing and loading grain sleeves.

Poltava oblast

Lubny city council reported that medical institutions of Lubny community received sanitary and hygiene products such as diapers, nappies, and urological pads from Germany. 

Cherkasy oblast

According to Head of the Cherkasy Military Administration Ihor Taburets,Territorial Defence forces with the necessary equipment: 2 buggy-type vehicles, 3 quadcopters, an FPV drone pilot training system and an FPV drone strike control kit for trained pilots were handed over by Cherkasy oblast and its partners. 

Due to yesterday’s missile attack on Cherkasy oblast, more than 12,000 consumers from five city districts are cut off water supply (forced to carry water in buckets, cans and bottles to their homes). 

A creative evening was held for internally displaced children in a Cherkasy museum. The museum hosted art therapy and educational workshops.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday, the enemy conducted 100 strikes on 26 populated areas in Zaporizhzhia oblast. 84 artillery shelling incidents have been recorded on the territories of Huliaipole, Novodanylivka, Omelnyk, Levadne, Novoandriivka, Temyrivka, Kamianske, Piatyhatky, Plavni, and other villages along the front line. Tavriiske and Orikhiv were affected by five airstrikes, while russian military personnel targeted Novodarivka and Bilohiria with MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) strikes. Four UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) attacked Zaliznychne, Malynivka, Novoivanivka, and Zatyshshia. Tavriiske suffered five missile strikes. There have been 48 reports of destruction to residential buildings, commercial structures, warehouses, and infrastructure facilities. No casualties have been reported.

Russian occupiers prohibit the issuance of essential medications such as insulin and medications for thyroid conditions to residents of the temporarily occupied city of Enerhodar, without russian passports. Additionally, starting from September 1st, occupiers in Enerhodar intend to deny medical assistance to those residents who do not possess russian passports.

Mykolaiv oblast

During the night, the air defense forces destroyed 13 “Shahed-136” drones during a massive attack on Mykolaiv and Odesa oblast. Two drones were shot down over Mykolaiv oblast. Yesterday, the air defense forces destroyed a reconnaissance UAV on the territory of Voskresenske community in Mykolaiv oblast. A fire broke out in shrubs and dry grass covering an area of 4 hectares in a field due to the debris falling. The fire was promptly extinguished by the units of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine. There were no casualties. This was reported today by the Mykolaiv RMA.

An exhibition titled “Mykolaiv – Unconquered” was presented in honor of Independence Day in Mykolaiv as part of the “Hero Cities” project. The exhibition was opened in the exhibition hall of the regional organization of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. This marks the third exhibition under the “Hero Cities” project, with previous exhibitions dedicated to Mariupol and Kryvyi Rih. These exhibitions are currently touring Europe. Odesa oblast

During the night of August 16, russian occupying forces conducted a drone attack on the territory of the state-owned enterprise “Reni Maritime Trade Port” in Odesa oblast. As a result of a russian UAV hitting two metal hangar-type warehouses, two tractors caught fire, and a fire broke out in a nearby scrap yard covering an area of 10 m². There have been no reported casualties. Terrorists continue to wage war on food supplies. This was announced by the Head of the Office of the President, Andrii Iermak.

The first ship has left the port of Odesa after the disrupted grain deal. The container ship Joseph Schulte under the flag of Hong Kong, which utilized the temporary corridor for civilian vessels to/from the Black Sea ports of Ukraine, has departed. It is carrying around 30 tons of cargo, including food. This was reported by the head of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Oleksandr Kurbakov.

A third of the actors are already in the war: the Ukrainian Theater in Odesa might close due to mobilization. Currently, only 9 members remain in the creative team of the theater. Due to a significant shortage of actors, the theater might suspend its operations in the near future.

Kherson oblast

On August 16, around 13:00, russian military personnel shelled a village in Beryslav region with artillery fire. A local resident, who was outside at the time of the shelling, was killed.

Today in the morning, an educational institution and a hospital territory in Kherson were struck by russian military. Three people were wounded. Additionally, at midnight, the russian army shelled Mykilske. A couple in their own home in this area suffered moderate injuries – a 60-year-old woman and a 63-year-old man. They are currently receiving medical treatment.

Yesterday, the enemy conducted 61 shelling incidents, firing 358 projectiles from mortars, artillery, tanks, “Grad” multiple rocket launchers, UAVs, and aviation. The enemy fired 13 shells at the city of Kherson. The russian forces carried out airstrikes in the areas of Olhivka, Burhunka, and Sadove. Novodmytrivka and Lvove were under artillery fire. The russian military targeted residential neighborhoods in populated areas of the region, as well as the “Invincibility Point” facility in Beryslav region. Six people were injured due to russian aggression.

There were eight fires caused by shelling yesterday. Within a day, 40 rescuers, 9 units of equipment, and 1 unit of equipment with 4 firefighters from the local firefighting service in Dariivka were involved in extinguishing fires caused by enemy shelling. The police recorded 15 war crimes committed by russian occupiers against the civilian population of the right-bank area of Kherson oblast.

The General Staff reports that russian occupiers are forcing residents of the temporarily occupied Kherson oblast to participate in russian pseudo-elections. Starting from August 1, occupiers are placing russian “observers” in the district court and former treasury buildings in the occupied settlement Verkhniy Rohachyk to oversee the illegal so-called “voting process” within the framework of the “Unified Voting Day” program, scheduled for September 10, 2023, in russia. These premises are guarded by Chechen terrorists from the Kadyrovites detachment “Akmat.”

A russian film crew is preparing to shoot a propaganda video about the alleged “destruction of 150 servicemen from the Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group in a local village cultural center” in the temporarily occupied Kozachi Laheri. However, as of August 13 of this year, up to 25 russian occupiers, former inmates of russian prisons, are based in this building.

Kherson RMA reports the support of donors and volunteers in Kherson oblast. Thanks to the support of the charitable fund “Council of the City,” mobile concrete shelters were installed in Beryslav and Chervonyi Maiak. With the assistance of the municipality of Jonava (Lithuania), an inter-settlement passenger bus was provided to the Tiahynka community. Charitable foundations “Crown of Princes of Ostroh” and “TEV” loaded a vehicle with humanitarian aid. Thanks to the charitable fund “Ukrainian Firefighters,” the personnel of the State Emergency Service units in Kherson oblast received two armored operational-rescue vehicles.

The school year in Kherson oblast will start in 190 educational institutions. This was reported by the First Deputy Chairman of the Regional Council, Iuriii Sobolevskyi. According to him, in the past academic year, 166 institutions operated in an online format in Kherson oblast.

The 94-year-old Kherson artist Olena Rybalchenko donated her paintings to the Kherson Art Museum. The museum had been looted by кussian military personnel before the liberation of the city. During the occupation of Kherson, Olena Rybalchenko did not paint, and she resumed her creative work only after the de-occupation of the city.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

On August 15, a russian missile hit an enterprise that manufactures components for cars. As a result of the rocket impact, reinforced concrete structures collapsed. Firefighters also worked to extinguish the fire that broke out in an area of ​​200 meters. In total, 34 rescuers and 11 units of equipment were used to eliminate the consequences of enemy shelling. The work lasted over 8 hours. Expertise and assessment of damages is being carried out. The surrounding buildings and residential area were not damaged.

4 medical institutions in Volyn received over 40 multifunctional beds, 8 cardiac monitors, a hemodialysis machine, medical equipment for laboratory diagnostics and instrument tables from Vienna, Austria.

Zakarpattia oblast

Uzhgorod city council reported that over UAH 953K will be donated from the budget of the city to the budget of the oblast to compensate business entities for the purchase of alternative sources of energy supply.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ruslan Marcinkiv, Head of Ivano-Frankivsk city council, announced that the summer rehabilitation season abroad for children of combatants and victims of the russian-Ukrainian war is coming to an end.
