Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signed a law equating the death of a soldier in captivity with death in the line of duty defending the homeland. The document provides Ukrainian prisoners of war with the same state financial guarantees that apply to all defenders. According to the law, family members of soldiers who died in captivity will receive a one-time payment of at least UAH 15m. Previously, families had to seek such payments through the courts. The law also confirms that soldiers in captivity continue to perform their duties and are therefore entitled to equal protection. The law restores justice and resolves financial issues so that soldiers who have been taken prisoner receive the same financial guarantees as all defenders of Ukraine.
The President of Ukraine has signed a law recognising as deported those citizens of Ukraine who were forcibly resettled from the territory of the Polish People’s Republic between 1944 and 1951. The law provides for the official recognition of Ukrainian citizens who were forcibly resettled from Poland to the USSR between 1944 and 1951 as part of the so-called population exchange – from Lemkivshchyna, Nadsiannia, Kholmshchyna, Southern Pidlashshia, Lyubachivshchyna, and Western Boikivshchyna. The document defines the status of deported persons and their descendants, guarantees of state support, including social benefits, medical care, preservation of historical memory, as well as the state’s obligation to honour the memory of these deportations. As a result of resettlements and deportations in 1944–1951, about 700,000 Ukrainians were deprived of their homes. Most of the deportees settled in the Ternopil region. According to information from Ternopil historian Volodymyr Kitsak, this figure is almost 200,000. Most of them are migrants from Nadsiannia and Lemkivshchyna.
