What happened in Ukraine today:
Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:
On 29 September, russian invaders continued to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders. There were 68 combat engagements. The occupiers concentrated their efforts on Pokrovsk and Kurakhove.
The aggressor also continued to use artillery and aircraft. About 20 settlements in Chernihiv, Sumy and Kharkiv oblasts were hit by artillery and mortar shelling. In addition, the russians launched airstrikes with anti-aircraft gunships on Kucherivka, Shalyhyno, Obody, Esman, Studenok and Reviakyne.
One firefight took place towards Kharkiv. The enemy stormed the defensive lines of Ukrainian units near Vovchansk. The invaders also launched two airstrikes on Vovchansk and Muravske.
Towards Kupiansk, there were six combat engagements. The enemy conducted offensive actions near Vyshneve, Kucherivka, Kruhlyakivka and Lozova. Two enemy attacks are currently underway.
Towards Lyman, there were seven combat engagements. The enemy stormed near Makiivka, Zarichne, Bilohorivka and Nevske, where the fighting is currently ongoing. In addition, the invaders launched six MLR attacks in the vicinity of Novoiehorivka.
Towards Kramatorsk, there were four firefights. russian troops attempted to storm Ukrainian positions near Chasiv Yar and Bila Hora, where one attack is still ongoing. In addition, the invaders launched 18 NARS at Chasiv Yar.
Towards Toretsk, russians tried to force Ukrainian units out of their positions near Shcherbynivka, Toretsk and Nelipivka. Half of the combat engagements were over, three are ongoing. The aggressor’s aviation also dropped UAVs near Katerynivka and Toretsk and launched 24 NARs at Druzhba.
Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy carried out 13 assault operations in the vicinity of Vozdvyzhenka, Miroliubivka, Novotoretske, Mykolaivka, Lysivka and Selydove. The Armed forces of Ukraine were holding back the russian offensive and repelled 11 attacks, while two battles are ongoing. Enemy losses in this area are being clarified.
Towards Kurakhove, the invaders attacked 17 times near Tsukurine, Oleksandropol, Heorhiivka, Bohoiavlenka, Katerynivka and Kostiantynivka. Thirteen attempts to advance were repelled, four are still ongoing.
Towards Vremivka, the enemy stormed our positions near Vuhledar, Bohoiavlenka, Katerynivka and Yelizavetivka 11 times. Nine battles were completed, two are still ongoing. In addition, using aviation, the invaders fired from NARs in the areas of Rivne, Novodarivka and Zolota Nyva.
Towards Orikhiv, there were three firefights. The enemy conducted offensive actions in the area of Novodanilivka. There were three airstrikes on Zaporizhzhia and Mala Tokmachka.
In other sectors, the situation remained unchanged.
Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, announced that another 9 children were brought home as part of the President’s initiative Bring Kids Back UA. They are currently receiving all the necessary assistance for their rehabilitation.
Liudmyla Darahan, State Secretary of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, reported that the total number of women in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is 68,000. Among them, more than 48,000 are servicewomen.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
The Kharkiv operational-tactical group said that Near Lukyantsi in Kharkiv oblast is being remotely mined. For remote mining, the russians use PFM-1 Pelyustka and POM-2 anti-personnel mines.
Viktor Kovalenko, village community head, said that a 59-year-old woman had an acute reaction to stress due to the impact of two fire trucks on Odnorobivka of Zolochiv community at around 10:50 am. According to him, one two-story building was destroyed, five two-story buildings were damaged, the premises of the cultural center of the Starosty district, a dispensary, gas and energy networks were damaged.
The police said that an 83-year-old resident of Odnorobivka and her daughter, who cannot move independently, found themselves at the epicenter of a russian attack by anti-aircraft guns, both of them had an acute reaction to stress. The police moved the women to another house. The entire family, together with the 84-year-old father, is being evacuated to Kharkiv.
At 5:12 p.m. the day before, the village of Slatye, Derhachi community was fired upon. As a result of KAB shelling, a modular building, farm buildings, and an educational institution were damaged. 7 people aged from 25 to 71 were injured. 3 men were killed.
At 4:30 p.m., Kivsharivka, Kupiansk region was fired upon. An apartment building was damaged as a result of enemy shelling.
At 2:00 p.m., the village of Kozacha Lopan, Kharkiv region was shelled. As a result of enemy fire with an FPV drone, the car was damaged. A 61-year-old man was killed. Three women aged 62, 61 and 55 were injured.
At 10:30, the village of Podoly, Kupiansk region were fired upon. The house was on fire as a result of the shelling.
Towards Kharkiv, russian terrorists once unsuccessfully stormed the positions of ukrainian units in Tykhe region. 14 times the enemy attacked towards Kupiansk. Near the settlements of Synkivka, Lozove and Tabaivka, units of the Defense Forces repelled 11 attacks. Three attacks continue near Stelmakhivka and Vyshneve.
Donetsk oblast
The General Staff reported that the russian army remains the most active towards Pokrovsk. The occupiers stormed Ukrainian positions 39 times, more than half of them in the vicinity of Selydove, Marynivka, Mykolaivka and Novotoretske.
Oleh Kalashnikov, Head of the press service of the 26th Artillery Brigade, informs that the russian army is trying to cross the canal near Chasiv Yar and is attacking simultaneously in several frontline areas around the town.
The invaders are storming with mobilised russians, who are thrown into the first waves of attacks, and professional russian soldiers are also fighting near Chasiv Yar.
Ukrainian troops repelled 22 attacks by russian troops towards Lyman, in particular near Hrekivka, Terny and Torske.
In the Kurakhove sector, Russians attacked 18 times near Tsukuryno, Hirnyk, Heorhiivka and Katerynivka.
The regional police informs that russians dropped seven bombs on Sloviansk over the past day and damaged critical infrastructure. The occupiers also shelled Pokrovsk, Kostiantynivka, Oleksandro-Kalynove and Yasenove with aircraft. Over 70 civilian objects, including schools, administrative buildings and enterprises, were damaged by the russian army strikes in Donetsk oblast.
The RMA said that house facades, cars and municipal buses were damaged as a result of russian shelling of Kostiantynivka community yesterday.
The occupiers struck Markivske region and twice in Kostiantynivka.
Operational situation in the region as of the morning of 29 September:
Pokrovsk region. In Kurakhivka community, 2 people were wounded and 10 objects were damaged in Sontsivka, a person was wounded and 2 houses damaged in Kostiantynopolske, 2 houses were damaged in Dalne, cars were damaged in Kurakhivka; high-rise buildings in Kurakhove were damaged. In Yasenove of Pokrovsk community, 3 people were killed and 1 injured, 4 private houses, a shop and 5 cars were damaged; a social institution and 2 houses were damaged in Pokrovsk.
Kramatorsk region. In Oleksandro-Kalynove of Illinivka community, 3 objects were damaged.
Bakhmut region. A person was wounded in Siversk and 3 houses were damaged. In the Chasiv Yar community, 6 private houses, a multi-storey building and 6 non-residential premises were damaged.
In total, russians fired 30 times at the settlements of Donetsk oblast. 1297 people, including 34 children, were evacuated from the frontline.
Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Military Administration, said that russians killed 1 resident of Yasenove. Another 14 people were wounded in the region over the day.
Luhansk oblast
The enemy attempted to storm the vicinity of Hrekivka, Makiivka and Bilohorivka. russians fired 70 times towards Ukrainian fortifications and settlements located along the contact line. They used 38 unmanned aerial vehicles and fired 32 times from cannon and rocket artillery. The main direction was Zhuravka Balka.
Luhansk Regional Military Administration said that in more than 200 settlements of the so-called ‘lpr’, not a single grocery store is open. These towns and villages are located on the territory of 22 administrative units. That is, in communities occupied not only in 2022, but also in 2014. For ten years, nothing has been done to improve the infrastructure there.
Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Military District Administration, informs that National Guardsmen together with paratroopers of the 77th Brigade repelled an assault on a column of 50 enemy vehicles towards Kupiansk. The soldiers showed courage, high professionalism and steadfastness in defence, defeating the enemy and pushing it back to its original positions. Thus, two tanks, two armoured personnel carriers and an infantry fighting vehicle were destroyed on the way. The enemy column that attacked the positions of the National Guard of Ukraine also failed, as the assault was repelled.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
The RMA announced that 210 out of 245 educational institutions damaged during the russian invasion have already been restored in Kyiv oblast. The institutions are being rebuilt at public expense under government programmes. International partners and foreign organisations helped with some of them. Currently, 30 more such facilities are in the process of being rebuilt. In particular, 10 educational institutions are being rebuilt at the expense of the Fund for Elimination of the Consequences of Armed Aggression, 3 schools are being overhauled at the expense of UNITED24, and 11 educational institutions will be restored at the expense of the EIB under the Ukraine Recovery Programme.
On 28 September, a solemn procession dedicated to the Day of Defenders of Ukraine ‘Honour the Living, Remember the Fallen’ took place in Kyiv’s Taras Shevchenko Park. The event brought together relatives of those killed, captured and missing, as well as war veterans and concerned citizens. They marched through Khreshchatyk to St Sophia’s Square, holding posters, photos of the dead soldiers and flags of Ukraine.
Kyiv residents with disabilities caused by the war and participation in the Revolution of Dignity and family members of certain categories of residents will receive one-off payments on the Day of Defenders of Ukraine. According to Kyiv City State Administration, payments are also provided for internally displaced persons registered in the capital with the appropriate status.
The resolution of the Verkhovna Rada, which came into force on 26 September, states that 11 more settlements will be renamed in Kyiv oblast. The renaming is connected with the requirements of the Law of Ukraine ‘On condemnation and prohibition of propaganda of russian imperial policy in Ukraine and decolonisation of toponymy’.
The utility company of Bucha community informed that the sewage treatment plant in the village of Havrylivka has been provided with a powerful diesel generator, which was donated by French partners. The diesel generator will become an alternative power source during power outages or possible accidents.
The Regional Military Administration reported that more than 1,000 women have applied to participate in a pilot project to train truck drivers. This project will provide participants with the opportunity to obtain a driver’s licence of the appropriate category and find employment in transport companies, as well as allow women to develop in the field of transportation and contribute to the country’s economic development.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine informs that a charity race was held in Kyiv to raise funds for inclusive equipment for female and male war veterans. Over 420 participants from all over Ukraine took part in the event. The sporting event was initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and organised jointly with Run Ukraine.
Zhytomyr oblast
The city council reported that in Zvyahil, the parents of the deceased 21-year-old defender of Ukraine, Oleksandr Gladunov, purchased an electrocardiograph for UAH 50,000 for the outpatient clinic of general practice of family medicine No. 2. According to Svetlana, Oleksandr’s mother, they decided to help people in memory of their son.
Students of the 24th Lyceum in Zhytomyr raised almost UAH 1 million during a charity fair. The students organised a fundraiser to buy a car for their history teacher Vitalii Kolomiiets, who is currently defending Ukraine from russian troops. Part of the funds will be used to continue the tradition of making trench candles for the military.
Zvyahel’s library initiated a collection of books by russian or soviet authors for waste paper. The collection was organised to raise funds for electronic warfare equipment for the soldiers of the 30th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi. The campaign will last until the end of October.
Sumy oblast
According to Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, at around 1:15pm on 29 September, russian forces attacked the railway station in Khutir-Mykhailivskyi, Sumy oblast, using FPV drones. The attack injured a train driver and a railway station worker.
During the night of 29 September, the russian army struck Nyzhnia Syrovatka in Sumy oblast. Several houses had their windows shattered. Viacheslav Suspytsin, Head of Nyzhnia Syrovatka community, reported that the russian attack created a crater and damaged fences and the roof of a house. Additionally, grass caught fire due to the strike. Fortunately, no one was injured.
During the day, 27 September, russians carried out 31 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 55 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Seredyna-Buda communities.
During the day, russians carried out 62 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 130 explosions. The attacks targeted Sumy, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Slobidka, Hlukhiv, Shalyhyne, Esman, Seredyna-Buda communities.
Sumy community: 10 people were killed as a result of enemy airstrikes in Sumy. 22 people received injuries of varying degrees of severity.
Velyka Pysarivka community: the enemy fired artillery (14 explosions), FPV drones (9 explosions).
Krasnopillia community: shelling was carried out using FPV drones (9 explosions), artillery shelling (14 explosions), dropping an explosive device from an UAV (1 explosion).
Myropolia community: the russians hit by mortars (9 explosions) and artillery (17 explosions).
Esman community: airstrikes by GAB (11 explosions), mortar shelling (6 explosions), shelling using an FPV drone (1 explosion) were recorded.
Sredyna-Buda community: the enemy fired artillery (13 explosions), mortars (4 explosions), using FPV drones (2 explosions).
Yunakivka community: GAB attack (3 explosions).
Hlukhiv community: shelling was carried out using FPV drones (3 explosions), mortar shelling (4 explosions).
Nova Sloboda community: 6 mines were dropped by the russians on the territory of the community.
Bilopillia community: the enemy fired artillery (2 explosions).
Khotin community: mortar shelling (3 explosions).
Shalyhyne community: 2 mines were dropped by the enemy on the territory of the community.
The Ministry of Energy reported that in Sumy oblast, 7,600 subscribers in 96 settlements remain without electricity.
Chernihiv oblast
During the day, russian forces attacked two border communities in Chernihiv oblast. The fire was carried out using barrel artillery and mortars, also used to drop explosives from UAVs.
Senenivska community:
- 3 explosions (hits, likely by 120mm mortar) and 2 explosions (hits, likely by barrel artillery) nearby Yanzhulivka;
- 2 explosions (hits, likely by 152mm barrel artillery) towards Mychailove;
- 6 explosions (hits, likely by 122mm barrel artillery) towards Mchy.
Snovsk community:
- 3 explosions (hits, likely by FPV-drone) nearby Kliusy;
- 2 explosions (hits, likely by 120mm mortar) nearby Khrinivka;
- 1 explosion (hits, likely an explosive device dropped from UAVs) nearby Mistky.
No casualties or injuries among the local population were reported as a result of the shelling.
Serhii Dovbysh, Head of the War Veterans Sports Federation of Chernihiv oblast, reported that in Chernihiv, the national sports competition for veterans, “Northern Outpost,” took place. 120 participants from 12 regions of Ukraine competed in bench press, airbike, table tennis, archery, and volleyball. These were veterans and active servicemen who had sustained injuries, concussions, or amputations.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that last night, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region several times. They fired from artillery at the region centre and Marganets community. Two kamikaze drones were also launched at Nikopol.
On 29 September, the enemy attacked Nikopol region more than fifteen times. In the evening, an 80-year-old woman died in Nikopol as a result of enemy shelling. A man of the same age was hospitalised. The occupiers fired with artillery and kamikaze drones at the region centre, Pokrov, Myrove and Marhanets communities. A multi-storey building, private houses, outbuildings, a garage, a moped, a tractor, cars and power lines were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast
Over the past week, 37 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were killed.
Kirovohrad oblast
A rally in support of captured countrymen and missing soldiers was held in the town of Dolynske, Kirovohrad oblast. The aim of the action was to once again draw attention to the need to release all captured Ukrainians.
Poltava oblast
A car rally was held in Kremenchuk as part of the campaign Don’t be silent. Captivity Kills in support of prisoners of war. About 20 cars took part in the rally.
Cherkasy oblast
Zolotonosha hosted a regional athletics competition dedicated to the memory of the fallen heroes of Ukraine.

Zaporizhzhia oblast
On the night and morning of 29 September, the enemy shelled Zaporizhzhia city with KABs (guided aerial bombs). It is currently known that over 10 KABs were directly targeted at the regional center. There are reports of destruction in three districts of the city — Shevchenkivskyi, Komunarskyi, and Oleksandrivskyi. One apartment building and at least 15 private houses were destroyed. In at least 15 more houses, windows and doors were blown out. Sixteen people were injured.

On September 28, the occupiers launched 429 attacks on eight settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces carried out three airstrikes on Huliaipole and Novodarivka. 254 drones of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Levadne. Eight rocket artillery strikes targeted Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, and Novodanylivka. Additionally, 164 artillery shellings hit the areas of Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Levadne. There were 29 reports of damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.
Mykolaiv oblast
On the night of 29 September, air defense forces destroyed four Shahed 131/136 drones in Mykolaiv oblast. As a result of the night enemy attack, an educational institution in the Shevchenkove community was damaged. A fire broke out, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
On 28 September, the enemy twice attacked Kutsurub community using FPV drones. As a result of one of the strikes a residential house was damaged in the village of Dmytrivka. Two residents of the house were injured.
Odesa oblast
On 28 September, the enemy attacked Odesa oblast with strike drones. As a result of a drone crash, the roof and windows of a residential building, a fence, and three parked trucks were damaged in Odesa region. Several drones fell on open terrain in Rozdilna region.
As of 6 a.m. on 29 September, there were two carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles in the Black Sea, with a total salvo of up to eight missiles. There was one enemy ship in the Mediterranean Sea, also a carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total salvo of up to 16 missiles.
Over the past day, 13 ships passed through the Kerch Strait in the interests of the russian federation, and 10 more ships entered the Sea of Azov.
Kherson oblast
On 29 September, a woman was killed as a result of artillery shelling in Mykilske. In the morning, the occupiers dropped explosives from a drone in Kherson, injuring two people. A 61-year-old woman suffered blast injuries, shrapnel wounds to her face, torso, and legs. A 36-year-old man sustained blast and traumatic brain injuries, a concussion, and shrapnel wounds to his arm and leg.
Around 1:00pm, the occupiers dropped explosives from a drone on a civilian in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, injuring a 61-year-old man’s leg. A 66-year-old woman was injured by artillery shelling in Bilozerka, receiving blast and traumatic brain injuries, and shrapnel wounds to her head, chest, arms, and legs. Later, Kherson RMA reported that russian artillery shelled the village of Blahovishchenske, injuring a 45-year-old resident with a blast injury and shrapnel wound to his leg.
Two more people were injured in Kherson oblast due to explosive drops from drones. russians attacked a 56-year-old man in Kherson who was hospitalized with shrapnel wounds to his forearm, leg, and abdomen. A 45-year-old resident of Shyroka Balka suffered a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his shoulder and back. The occupiers also shelled Beryslav, injuring two people.
Yesterday, Antonivka, Beryslav, Veletenske, Havrylivka, Dudchany, Prydniprovske, Shyroka Balka, Novodmytrivka, Stanislav, Romashkove, Tryfonivka, Kizomys, Yasna Poliana, Odradokamianka, Sadove, Shlyakhove, Mykhailivka, Novovorontsovka, Tomaryne, Nova Kamianka, Sablukivka, and the city of Kherson were under enemy fire and airstrikes. Damage was reported to a cultural institution, a multi-story building, 30 private houses, a utility building, a bus, and private vehicles. Four people were killed, and another 10 were injured due to russian aggression.
Ukrainian defenders eliminated 62 occupiers, 11 guns, and three russian reconnaissance drones in southern Ukraine. They also destroyed 14 bunkers, an ammunition depot, a drone launch site, three observation posts, and a firing position.
A meeting within the Ukrainian Word for the Defender project was held in Kherson and organised by PEN Ukraine in collaboration with local authorities and the 124th Territorial Defense Brigade. The project aims to support defenders through the power of books and reading. The Ukrainian PEN delegation donated 150 books to the military.

Volyn oblast
Servicemen of the Lubart battalion (the 5th Battalion of the 12th AZOV Brigade), who are currently in Toretsk region, received the EW, DJI Mavic and Starlink from Lutsk community.
Zakarpattia oblast
Rustam Rosul, Veteran from the oblast, will perform at the Arnold Classic Europe sports competition in Spain. Rustam was included in the national team to participate in international competitions Arnold Classic Europe, which will be held on 11-13 October, 2024 in Madrid. In total, at these competitions, 50 Ukrainian veterans will compete for championships in barbell pressing, rowing, kettlebell jerking and other disciplines. All sports are adapted according to the category groups of participants.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Ivano-Frankivsk City Council approved one-time payments for 708 people in the amount of UAH 681,000, namely, 62 family members of the dead participants of the Joint Forces Operation/ the Anti-Terrorist Operation in the amount of UAH 62,000; 503 relatives of fallen defenders of Ukraine in the amount of UAH 477,500; 120 family members of missing defenders in the amount of UAH 118,500; 23 relatives of deceased defenders in the amount of UAH 23,000.
Lviv oblast
The RMA held a meeting with Martin Oberg, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Sweden to Ukraine.
Mykhailo Fedorov, Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, arrived in Lviv oblast on a working visit. Here he held a meeting with representatives of local authorities and businesses in Lviv. He also presented the vision of the Ministry of Digital Affairs regarding the integration of artificial intelligence into the development of the country.
In Busk community, an Alley of memory of residents of the region who were killed in the war was opened. These are Anatolii Burlachenko, Andrii Maslianik, Vasyl Ivashkiv, Stepan Matviiev. Also, on behalf of residents of the community, military servicemen – residents of the Humny Starostyn Region, who were injured, are undergoing treatment or on short-term leave at home, were thanked.
Rivne oblast
The Air Defence Forces shot down an enemy air target over Rivne oblast that night. Debris during the fall damaged an overhead power line, as well as a fence and a gazebo on the territory of a private farm. People were not injured. 70 consumers remained without electricity. Appropriate services are available on site.
Large-scale training of rescuers took place in Rivne oblast. Participants are soldiers of the State Emergency Service, patrol police officers, and medics. In total, over 100 people from 13 oblasts of Ukraine. Among the guests are representatives of Poland and Great Britain. Rivne oblast hosted the Rescue Days Ukraine exercise for the 5h time.
Ternopil region
Ternopil community handed over Starlink and monoculars to the military thanks to the budget funds.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
During his visit to Donetsk oblast, Serhii Tyurin, Head of the RMA, met with Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk RMA. They discussed common work issues and ways to solve them as best as possible. Also, from Khmelnytskyi, means of destroying the enemy were handed over to the military.
Chernivtsi oblast
The 1st match meeting in memory of Yurii Ivanovych took place in Chernivtsi. 12 boxers from sports clubs Variah and Imperiya held sparring matches in honour of Yurii Ivanovich and all fallen defenders. Athletes exchanged experiences and honoured the memory of the fallen soldiers. Yurii Ivanovych engaged in boxing, received the title of Candidate Master of Sports and served in the 80th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade. He was killed during a counteroffensive in Kharkiv oblast, defending the retreat of his comrades.
Military personnel undergoing rehabilitation in Chernivtsi oblast visited Chernivtsi thanks to the Mandrotherapy project, which is implemented by Chernivtsi RMA.
