War in Ukraine today: latest news, 24 May 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1186 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

russian invaders continue to storm the positions of Ukrainian defenders.

On 24 May, there were 85 combat clashes on the frontline.

The border settlements of Porozok, Kamianska Sloboda, Lohy in Chernihiv oblast; Stepok, Dmytrivka, Maryine, Zarichne, Prohres, Turyia, Tymofiivka, Bratenytsia, Shevchenkove, Myropilske in Sumy oblast were affected by shelling from the territory of the russian federation.

Towards Kharkiv, the enemy tried three times to break through the defensive lines of Ukrainian defenders near Vovchansk and Vovchanski Khutory, but was repulsed.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy tried twice to advance in the vicinity of Petropavlivka and Nova Kruhlyakivka, but was stopped by Ukrainian defenders.

Towards Lyman, the invading army attacked 12 times near the settlements of Kopanky, Lypove, Ridkodub, Zelena Dolyna, Kolodiazi, Torske and in the vicinity of Karpivka, Hrekivka, Olhivka, three clashes are ongoing.

Towards Siversk, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy attacks in the viicnity of Bilohorivka and Pereizne.

Towards Kramatorsk, two attacks by enemy units were repelled by Ukrainian defenders, west of Andriivka and in the vicinity of Predtechyny, another clash is ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, in total, the enemy attacked nine times near Druzhba, Diliivka, Krymske, Toretsk, Shcherbinivka, Petrivka and in the vicinity of Pleshchiivka, three clashes are currently underway.

Towards Pokrovsk, the invaders have made 25 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Zoria, Nova Poltavka, Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Udachne, Novoserhiivka, Muravka, Troitske and Andriivka.

The defense forces are holding back the enemy’s onslaught and repelling 19 attacks, six clashes are still ongoing. The enemy’s losses are being specified. Zoria, Novotoretske, Sofiivka, Koptieve were hit by airstrikes.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy attacked 10 times near the settlements of Konstantinopol, Bahatyr, Vilne Pole, Rivnopol, Novosilka, two clashes are still ongoing.

The enemy carried out airstrikes in the vicinity of Novodarivka, Novopol, Perestroika and Komar.

Towards Huliaipole, unguided missiles attacked the vicinity of the settlements of Huliaipole and Malynivka. There were no active offensive actions.

Towards Orikhiv, the occupiers, with the support of aviation, advanced in the direction of Novoandriivka, and combat actions also took place in the areas of Stepovoye and Mali Shcherbaky. In total, there were three clashes.

Towards Kherson, the enemy did not conduct active offensive actions, but carried out an airstrike on the settlement of Kozatske.

Towards Kursk, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 11 attacks by russian invaders during this day, and five more clashes are ongoing. The enemy carried out 8 air strikes, dropping nine GABs, and carried out 62 attacks, including two from multiple launch rocket systems.

In other directions of the front, the situation has not changed significantly.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reports that 307 Ukrainian prisoners of war have been returned home. This is the second exchange within the framework of the 1000 for 1000 agreement, 697 people have already been returned in these two days.

The Air Force informs that on the night of May 24, russia launched 14 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles and 250 strike drones over the territory of Ukraine. 6 ballistic missiles and 128 drones were shot down, another 117 drones were recognized as “lost in location” and suppressed by electronic warfare.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that overnight, russian forces launched a massive attack on Kyiv Oblast using a combination of ballistic missiles and more than a hundred UAVs. The air raid alert lasted for eight hours. As a result of the enemy attack, three people were injured. In Brovary region, a 54-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman were hospitalized with shrapnel wounds. In Boryspil region, a 43-year-old woman suffered a penetrating thigh wound and was taken to the hospital.

The aftermath of the enemy attack has been recorded in five regions of the oblast. In Brovary region, a private house and a car were damaged; in Obukhiv region, a shop building was affected; in Boryspil region, a private house sustained damage; in Bucha region, a shop building, a gas station, and an enterprise were hit. Meanwhile, in Vyshhorod region, two private houses, a utility building, and a service center were damaged.

Kyiv region’s State Emergency Service (SES) reported that in the city of Berezan, firefighters extinguished a fire in a private household caused by falling UAV debris. Two injured individuals were found at the scene and were provided with medical assistance.

According to Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA), 14 people were injured as a result of Russia’s massive attack on Kyiv. As of 14:00, reports indicate damage to nine residential buildings and 26 vehicles across three districts of the capital. Two schools were affected in the Dnipro and Obolon districts, while a polyclinic was damaged in the Podil district. In the Solomianskyi district, a Ukrposhta branch and a boiler house sustained damage, and a power transmission line was also hit.

In Holosiivskyi district, debris from a downed drone fell in several locations. One person was injured, and five vehicles were damaged.

In Sviatoshynskyi district, non-residential infrastructure was affected in several locations. The fire has been contained.

In Solomianskyi district, a fire broke out on the fourth and fifth floors of a building following the attack. Seven people were injured, and one was rescued. A coordination headquarters has been set up nearby.

A fire was recorded in a non-residential development in Shevchenkivskyi district. The blaze has been contained.

In Dniprovskyi district, debris from enemy targets damaged an apartment on the third floor of a multi-story building. Two people were injured

In Obolon district, at least four locations have been recorded with damage. Debris from a downed target fell on open ground in several places. A drone damaged multiple apartments on the 3rd to 6th floors of a multi-story building, leaving five people injured. A shopping center was also affected. An emergency operations headquarters has been set up on-site, providing assistance and food to all those affected

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that three injured individuals were hospitalized in the capital overnight, with two remaining in inpatient care. In total, 14 Kyiv residents were affected in the Dniprovskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Obolon districts. Eleven of them received medical assistance on-site.

The State Emergency Service (SES) reported that a volunteer fire brigade has been established in Boryspil district. The new firefighting unit was launched at an agricultural enterprise in the village of Myrne and will serve 13 settlements across four communities. This year alone, Kyiv region has experienced over 5,000 fires. Due to the ongoing war and the rise in fire incidents, business representatives, young firefighters, and volunteer fire brigades are joining the efforts, according to the statement.

Kyiv Regional Military Administration (RMA) reported that, as a result of Russian aggression, more than 30,000 structures in the region have been destroyed or damaged. Residential buildings, both multi-apartment and private homes, have suffered the most significant losses. As of today, nearly 21,000 structures have already been rebuilt. Overall, the recovery rate in the most affected communities has reached up to 85%.

The United24 Fund is supporting the renovation of 18 apartment buildings, with 10 already completed and the rest expected to be finished by the end of 2025. Additionally, 52 residential and public facilities are being restored using funds from the Armed Aggression Consequences Elimination Fund, with 19 of them already put into operation.

As part of the Ukraine Recovery Program, supported by the European Investment Bank, 13 projects are being implemented. These include educational and medical institutions, administrative buildings, rehabilitation centers, and critical infrastructure facilities.

Zhytomyr oblast

On the first day of the “1000 for 1000” exchange, a resident of Pavlivka village in Kurnen community, Zhytomyr Oblast, returned from Russian captivity. Andrii Bernatskyi had been held prisoner for nearly two years. On 23 May, the day of his return to Ukraine, he turned 35 years old.

Sumy oblast

Kursk Military Grouping explained that the information that russian forces entered Yunakivka in Sumy oblast is false. According to DeepState, the ‘grey’ zone currently includes Novenke, Zhuravka, Veselivka, and Basivka. Notably, on 12–13 May, the ‘grey’ zone expanded towards the villages of Vodolahy and Bilovody in Khotin community.

On 23 May, a 76-year-old resident of Bilopillia was injured as a result of a russian strike. The victim was on his homestead when russian forces began shelling. He was hospitalized.

The Regional Military Administration reported that in the morning of 23 May, a fire broke out in one of the houses in Bilopillia community following an MLRS strike. Over the past day, around 10 houses in the community have been destroyed or severely damaged.

The Regional Military Administration informed that throughout the day, from the morning of 23 May to the morning of 24 May, russian forces carried out nearly 130 shellings across 35 settlements in 14 territorial communities. The most intense attacks were recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used MLRS (over 60 strikes) and UAV-dropped explosive devices (over 40 strikes). Additionally, russian forces launched missile strikes with unguided aerial rockets (NAR), as well as UAV and FPV-drone attacks.

As a result of russian shelling yesterday, a residential building and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged in Bilopillia community, as well as a residential building in Krasnopillia community.

Over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and community organizations from border areas, evacuated 11 people.

According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, in Bilopillia, around 1,500 residents remain, while in Vorozhba, 800 people are still present. These figures were provided by community leaders during a meeting of the regional evacuation headquarters. The number of attacks in these communities has significantly increased, with the enemy striking civilian homes using guided aerial bombs (GAB) and FPV-drones. Residents are urged to evacuate to safer locations.

Volunteer Iryna Kravchuk, said that three adult cats and ten kittens were evacuated by volunteers from Sumy oblast to Khmelnytskyi. All the animals are currently in a quarantine unit at the Save a Life shelter in the oblast center. They need wet and dry food, as well as medication. The shelter is also expecting five more cats and one dog from settlements in Sumy oblast where fighting continues.

Chernihiv oblast

The North Operational Command reported that on 23 May, russian forces attacked Vertiivka village in Nizhyn region. One explosion from a Gerbera-type UAV was recorded. As a result of an explosive device dropped from a UAV in Hremiach village, Novhorod-Siverska community, a house was damaged.

Chernihiv Border Detachment informed that throughout 23 May, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivska, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling with barrel artillery (4 explosions), FPV-drone strikes (14 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (16 explosions). Fourteen settlements came under enemy fire.

Oleksandr Kodola, Mayor of Nizhyn, announced that during the exchange on 23 May, two residents of Nizhyn, Oleksandr Shner and Yurii Makarenko, returned home. 

According to Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, in the border community of Novhorod-Siverskyi, two modular shelters have been installed, funded by a state subsidy. The shelters were placed in locations where no other protective structures are nearby.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the oblast council, reports that last night, the occupiers attacked Pokrovske community of Nikopol region with a kamikaze drone. T25 solar panels were damaged. It was also noisy in Synelnykive region. A 34-year-old man was injured in  Mykolaivka community as a result of a rocket attack. A private house and an outbuilding were damaged. Mezhova community was also hit by kamikaze drones, and 3 cars were damaged. 

According to updated information, a shop, a post office and an administrative building were destroyed in the evening as a result of a GAB strike on Novopavlivka community in Synelnykove region.

During the day, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region more than two and a half dozen times. They attacked with kamikaze drones, dropped ammunition from drones and shelled with artillery. 

They targeted the regional centre, Marhanets and Pokrovske communities. A multi-storey building, an administrative building, a religious institution and infrastructure were damaged. It was also noisy in Synelnykove region. The occupiers fired at Mala Mykhailivka and Mezhove communities with drones. An enterprise and a private house were damaged.

During the exchange on 24 May, 21 soldiers returned from russian captivity to Dnipropetrovsk oblast. Among them are seven soldiers from Kryvyi Rih.

Vinnytsia oblast

Serhii Morhunov, ​mayor of Vinnytsia, says that as part of the second phase of the 1000 for 1000 programme, 16 more defenders from Vinnytsia oblast returned. 

Kirovohrad oblast

On 24 May, 22-year-old defender Andrii Ivanov, released from russian captivity, was welcomed in the village of Novoiehorivka, Ustyniv community, Kirovohrad oblast. He had not been home for over three years. He was captured during the defence of Mariupol, at the age of 19. He was returned to Ukraine before Easter.

During the exchange on 23 May, Oleksii Tkach from Svitlovodsk community of Kirovohrad oblast was returned to Ukraine. The defender had been in captivity for three years. He is 29 years old. Also, Mykola Neskorodenko from the village of Mykhailivka, Kirovohrad oblast, was returned from russian captivity during the exchange. The defender is 55 years old. He was awarded the title of People’s Hero of Ukraine for his military services.

Poltava oblast

National Guardsman Ihor Kashchuk from Poltava has returned from russian captivity. He had been in captivity for over a year and a half. His wife and four-year-old daughter were waiting for him at home.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, says that at night, defenders shot down 2 russian UAVs in Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, reported that a residential building, outbuildings and a vehicle were damaged due to russian attacks on Huliaipole and Bilenke in Zaporizhzhia oblast. There were no casualties reported.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defence Forces in Orikhiv region repelled 3 russian attacks near Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky and Novoandriivka. It was noted that Huliaipole and Malynivka came under aerial attacks by unguided missiles.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that among those released from captivity today are 10 servicemen from Zaporizhzhia oblast.

The General Staff reported that on 23 May the Defence Forces repelled 5 russian attacks in Orikhiv region. Combat engagements occurred near Novodanylivka and in Stepove region.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, informed that on 23 May russian forces carried out 403 strikes on the territory of 12 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. These included 151 artillery strikes on Rivnopillia, Lobkove, Kamianske, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novodarivka and Charivne.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the RMA, during the night of 24 May, air defence forces in Mykolaiv oblast destroyed 10 Shahed-type drones.

On 23 May and overnight, russian forces launched 3 FPV drone attacks on Kutsurub community. 2 private houses in Dniprovske village were damaged in one of the attacks.

Yesterday, at 4:06pm, russian troops targeted the coastal area of Ochakiv community by an FPV drone. There were no injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am, 2 russian warships were detected in the Black Sea. Both are carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles, with a combined total salvo capacity of up to 12 missiles.

As reported by the Air Command South, air defence forces in southern Ukraine destroyed 24 Shahed-type and other drones. It reported that russia launched 2 Iskander-M missile strikes on Odesa oblast on 23 May.

According to Odesa RMA, overnight, russian forces targeted port infrastructure by drones. The Prosecutor’s Office has launched a pre-trial investigation into a suspected war crime.

A 41-year-old man injured during yesterday’s missile strike on Odesa died in hospital. The number of deaths increased to 3.

Kherson oblast

Kherson RMA informed that a 48-year-old woman sustained explosive and craniocerebral injuries, a concussion and shrapnel wounds to the abdomen and thigh as a result of a russian UAV strike on Korabelnyi district of Kherson. She was hospitalised.

Kherson CMA reported that russian troops attacked Komyshany near Kherson by a drone. A 40-year-old woman sustained explosive and closed craniocerebral injuries and concussion. She was hospitalised.

As reported by the RMA, the russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on a man in Antonivka. He sustained a blast injury and a concussion. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 23 May, 2 people were killed and 13 injured due to russian attacks on Kherson oblast. 3 high-rise buildings, 12 private houses, a sports ground and a garage were damaged. A total of 37 settlements were shelled by russian forces.

A 69-year-old resident of Kherson sought medical assistance after being wounded in a russian shelling in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson. He suffered a blast injury and a concussion.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community handed over 2 DJI Mavic 3 PRO quadcopters to military unit A7028. The soldiers of 3 mechanized and 1 rifle battalions received the assistance.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, internally displaced persons registered in Uzhhorod received 50 packages with food kits and 80 loaves of bread at the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center. During the week, volunteers distributed clothing, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,200 units were distributed). The distribution of humanitarian aid was carried out in partnership with PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Spletinnia Košice, Valentyn Štefanyo and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council has decided to transfer a subvention of UAH 5.8 million for the purchase of an onboard vehicle with a crane-manipulator unit to eliminate the consequences of hostilities in Huliaipole. 

Lviv oblast

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded a defender from Zolochiv region the For Courage Order of the 3rd degree (posthumously). Zinovii ​​​​Hnyda was killed on August 19, 2024 near the village of Vyshnivka, Kursk oblast.

Rivne oblast

Teachers in Rivne oblast will be trained in the subject Defense of Ukraine, after which they will receive a corresponding document. These will be specialists from different regions. The program model contains 5 modules and includes various teaching methods.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil has joined the implementation of the national initiative to create an accessible and inclusive environment. The city has launched the implementation of the “Movement without Barriers” project, designed to make the city comfortable and convenient for everyone. Ternopil City Council and 15 representatives of local businesses signed a memorandum of cooperation.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA presented an award to the relatives of the Defender, who is considered missing. Shevchuk Vitalii (missing) was awarded the For Courage Order of the 3rd degree and the Iron Cross award of the Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

Chernivtsi oblast

High state awards from the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy were awarded to Bukovyna servicemen who were killed defending the Motherland. In particular, the servicemen were awarded the For Courage Order of the 3rd degree (posthumously).

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The IMF mission has started the eighth review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) in Kyiv with the Ukrainian authorities. In the event of a positive review of the financing program, Ukraine will receive a tranche from the Fund in the amount of $487 million.

The country’s Minister of Defense Theo Franken says that Belgium is ready to send its troops to Ukraine as part of the “coalition of the willing”. 

Ukraine will adopt Korean experience in road construction. The State Agency for Infrastructure Reconstruction and Development of Ukraine has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with SG, a leading manufacturer of asphalt concrete in Korea. The cooperation involves the exchange of experience, joint projects and the use of new technologies on Ukrainian roads, in particular on the R-55 highway.
