It has been the 1550  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

On 23 May, the aggressor attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 39 times.

Artillery shelling of border areas continues. In Sumy oblast, the following settlements were affected: Sopych, Novovasylivka, Bachivsk, Rohizne, Kysla Dubyna, Volfyne, Korenok, Tovstodubove, Budky, Zarichchia, and Ulanove; in Chernihiv oblast—Khrinivka. The settlements of Esman, Vilna Sloboda, and Luzhky in Sumy oblast sustained airstrikes.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, there was one combat engagement; the enemy conducted 40 attacks on settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops.

Towards Southern Sloboda, one combat engagement with the enemy is ongoing in the vicinity of Petro-Ivanivka.

Towards Kupiansk, Kramatorsk, and Kherson, the enemy conducted no offensive operations.

Towards Lyman, the Defense Forces repelled three combat engagements in the vicinity of Zarichne, Dibrova, and Ozerne. One combat engagement is currently ongoing.

Towards Sloviansk, the Defense Forces successfully repelled two attempts by the invaders to advance in the vicinity of Zakitne and Kryva Luka.

Towards Kostiantynivka, the invaders carried out seven attacks in the vicinity of Pleshchiivka, Ivanopillia, Kostiantynivka, Illinivka, Toretske, Kucheriv Yar, and Sofiivka.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers tried 17 times to push Ukrainian warriors from their positions in the vicinity of Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Hryshyne, Serhiivka, Udachne, and Molodetske, and towards Shevchenko and Bilytske. Four combat engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy advanced once in the vicinity of Ternove.

Towards Huilaipole, the Defense Forces successfully repelled six enemy attacks in the vicinity of Dobropillia, Zlahoda, Pryluky, Charivne, and Huilaipilske.

Towards Orikhiv, one enemy attack is ongoing in the vicinity of Bilohiria.

In other directions, there are currently no significant changes in the situation. No enemy attempts to advance were recorded.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, a battle was ongoing in the vicinity of Petro-Ivanivka towards Southern Sloboda. Towards Kupiansk, russian troops conducted no assault operations since the beginning of the day.

Viktor Trehubov, Head of the Communications Directorate of the Joint Forces Grouping, stated that isolated russian servicemen remain in Kupiansk, but their number is insignificant—up to 20 people. According to him, earlier information regarding a complete clearing of the city was the result of a misinterpretation. At the same time, there are no russian troop concentrations in Kupiansk.

Viacheslav Zadorenko, Head of Derhachi City Military Administration, reported that on the morning of 23 May, a russian FPV drone hit a civilian car traveling from Kozacha Lopan towards Tsupivka. An 86-year-old woman was killed, and her 64-year-old son, who was driving, was injured. The individuals were attempting to evacuate from Kozacha Lopan due to the deteriorating security situation in the border area.

The Kharkiv Oblast Prosecutor’s Office reported that in Balakliia, russian drones struck near a sports complex and an apartment building. Three civilian women aged 23, 35, and 47 were injured. The attack sparked a fire in the building of an educational institution’s sports hall over an area of 300 square meters, and a car also caught fire. According to preliminary data, the russians deployed two jet-powered Geran-type UAVs.

In Chuhuiv, a two-story warehouse building of a private enterprise caught fire as a result of a russian drone attack. The area of the fire covered 200 square meters. Preliminarily, the warehouse was non-operational.

Naftogaz reported that for over a day, russian troops have been massively attacking oil and gas facilities in Kharkiv and Poltava oblasts. Due to the danger of repeat strikes, it is currently impossible to fully assess the consequences of the attacks. Preliminarily, there is severe equipment damage and large-scale fires; the personnel managed to evacuate in time.

Over the past day, 216 combat engagements were recorded at the front, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Towards Southern Sloboda, russian troops stormed positions of the Defense Forces seven times in the vicinity of Ternove, Hraniv, and Novovasylivka. Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian defenders stopped five attacks near Hlushkivka and Novoplatonivka.

Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reports that over the past day, Kharkiv and 17 other settlements in the region came under enemy fire. Three people were killed, and five others were injured. A 46-year-old man was killed in Kivsharivka; a 41-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man were killed in Horokhovatka, Borova community, where another 42-year-old woman was also injured. Residents of Zolochiv, Pisky-Radkivski, Petrivka, and Bohodukhiv were also injured.

russian troops used UAVs to attack Nemyshlianskyi and Kyivskyi districts of Kharkiv. Throughout the day, the russian army deployed two Geran-2 UAVs, four Lancets, eight Molniya UAVs, 23 FPV drones, and seven unidentified drones across Kharkiv oblast, according to Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.

In Bohodukhiv, Kupiansk, Izium, and Kharkiv regions, residential buildings, power grids, an administrative building, a cafe, garages, outbuildings, cars, and other civilian infrastructure objects were damaged.

The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 219 people over the past day. Since the point began operating, 35,660 people have been registered there.

In the Novobavarskyi district of Kharkiv, memorial plaques were unveiled for fallen defenders Mykhailo Ilhov and Maksym Kunitsyn. The plaque honoring Mykhailo Ilhov was installed on the facade of Lyceum No. 65, and the one honoring Maksym Kunitsyn on the facade of Lyceum No. 162.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, towards Lyman, russian troops stormed the positions of the Defense Forces 12 times near Torske, Ozerne, Drobysheve, Dibrova, Yampil, and Lyman. Towards Pokrovsk, the russian army attacked 42 times, while Ukrainian troops repelled another 16 assaults towards Kostiantynivka.

The 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade reported that towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian fighters evacuated a wounded comrade using a ground robotic complex. The operation succeeded on the second attempt, as the first UGV struck a mine and exploded.

Serhii Horbunov, Head of Kostiantynivka City Military Administration, reported that in the morning, russian troops struck a private house in Kostiantynivka. One person was killed, and another was injured.

Rubizhne City Military Administration reported that defender Andrii Starikov from Rubizhne has returned from russian captivity. The man was captured during the defense of Luhansk oblast and spent nearly four years in captivity.

In Cherkasy, a farewell ceremony will be held on May 24 for Azov fighter Oleksandr Krokhmaliuk, who served as the head of the regiment’s medical service during the defense of Mariupol and was killed in russian captivity. The Azov military medic, who left Azovstal and was taken into captivity, died in a russian pre-trial detention center due to torture. Sviatoslav Palamar (callsign “Kalyna”), Deputy Commander of the Azov Brigade, stated that forensic experts established the cause of death following a body exchange.

On May 22, police recorded 1,327 attacks by the russian army on the frontline and residential sector of Donetsk oblast. Eleven settlements were under fire: Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, Malotaranivka, Oleksandrivka, Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, Cherkaske, Maiaky, Oleksandrivka, and Spasko-Mykhailivka. Forty civilian objects sustained damage, including 22 residential buildings.

russian troops struck Kramatorsk with artillery and various types of drones. Three people were injured, including a boy born in 2013. The strikes damaged seven apartment buildings, 10 private houses, an ambulance station, an educational institution, an outbuilding, two garages, three civilian cars, and a municipal bus. Overnight, the city was attacked by UAVs again: one person was injured, and an apartment building was damaged.

In Druzhkivka, a civilian was injured as a result of an FPV drone strike.

The russians attacked Malotaranivka with three FPV drones. Two residents were injured, and a municipal bus was damaged.

In Sloviansk, a Gerber-type UAV strike damaged a private house.

In Mykolaivka, two apartment buildings and a garage were damaged; in the settlement of Oleksandrivka, a State Emergency Service building and two trucks were damaged; in Cherkaske, a gas station was damaged; and in Spasko-Mykhailivka and Maiaky, one private house was damaged in each.

An intermediary evacuation point operates in Sloviansk, where people from the frontline settlements of Donetsk oblast, including Mykolaivka, are brought daily. At the point, evacuees receive hot meals, overnight lodging, hygiene kits, access to showers, psychological support, and assistance with restoring documents. Separate rooms, beds, and mobility aids are provided for people with limited mobility, while enclosures and food are available for pets. Afterward, individuals are transported to the transit center in Lozova, Kharkiv oblast, where they can stay temporarily in a shelter and receive help finding permanent housing.

Luhansk oblast

According to Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, towards Lyman, russian troops launched 12 assaults in the vicinity of six settlements. In Luhansk oblast, the occupiers struck three times with MLRS, twice with tube artillery, deployed mortars and grenade launchers, and directed 13 UAVs at the fortifications of Ukrainian defenders.

The SBU and the Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck the logistics and bases of russian troops in temporarily occupied Luhansk oblast. Personnel of the 3rd Directorate of the Main Directorate of the SBU in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts established the coordinates of the targets, after which servicemen of the 1st Separate Center of Unmanned Systems of the Unmanned Systems Forces executed strikes using FirePoint-2 drones against occupier facilities in Luhansk, Kadiivka, and Bilokurakyne, as well as in the Sievierodonetsk and Svatove districts. As a result, an enemy train, fuel tanks, field ammunition depots, repair bases, telecommunications infrastructure objects, a personnel deployment point, a UAV maintenance base, and the building of the occupation “police” were hit. Russian losses exceed 80 personnel killed and wounded, and large-scale fires following the strikes were recorded by satellite monitoring systems.

Nyzhnioteple community is developing a model for supporting residents through constant communication, individual family support, and personal contact with people regardless of their location. The community signed memorandums of cooperation with the Aidar and Lysychansk communities: thanks to this, a Administrative Services Center (CNAP) operates every Friday in Ivano-Frankivsk at the Coordination Center for Assisting IDPs from Luhansk Oblast, and on the second Friday of each month, the Head of the Nyzhnioteple Settlement Military Administration holds reception hours. In Dnipro, at the humanitarian headquarters of Lysychansk City Military Administration, the deputy head for public relations receives citizens on the third Friday of every month. Separately, the community supports veterans, individuals undergoing medical treatment and rehabilitation, and involves IDPs in commemorative events, themed meetings, and activities for children.

In temporarily occupied Luhansk oblast, the occupation authorities are unable to resolve the personnel deficit. Out of 14,000 vacancies registered in the so-called “republican employment center,” only just over a thousand were filled within six months. For more than 12,000 jobs, there are either no applicants or the candidates fail to meet the requirements.

In Sievierodonetsk, the occupiers film propaganda segments featuring cars and people in the frame, yet the buildings in the city remain nearly empty. Even in apartment buildings that did not sustain significant damage during the assault on the city, only a handful of people live: in one such building, only six families remain, four of which consist of elderly individuals.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Kyiv City State Administration reported on the morning of 23 May that 12 air raid sirens had sounded in the capital this week. In total, they lasted for almost six hours.

According to the head of the Darnytskyi District State Administration, Oleksandr Kovtunov, access has been restricted to 43 flats in a high-rise building in the Darnytskyi district of Kyiv, which was struck by a russian missile on 14 May, claiming the lives of 24 people. Following an inspection, it was found that the attacked building was structurally damaged and there was a real risk of further collapse. In particular, 18 flats in the 5th block have been completely destroyed, whilst a further 16 flats have suffered severe damage and are currently inaccessible due to the destruction of the stairwell.

The Regional Military Administration reported that major renovation work is underway at the Rudnytske Gymnasium, a branch of the ‘Selychansky Lyceum’ educational institution, in the village of Rudnytske, Brovary District. The works are being carried out as part of the Ukraine Recovery Programme with the support of the European Investment Bank. The major renovation involves a comprehensive modernisation of the building with a focus on energy efficiency, safety and accessibility.

The Ukrainian Technological Sports Cup took place in Kyiv oblast. The competition brought together professional drone operators, military personnel, representatives of law enforcement agencies, young people, manufacturers of technological solutions and experts from various regions of Ukraine. The competition included drone racing, FPV drone races under load, the execution of missions by ground-based robotic systems and heavy airdrops.

Zhytomyr oblast

According to the Regional Military Administration, the grand opening of the ‘Place of Strength’ Psychosocial Support Centre took place in the town of Korostyshiv. The new facility has been established to provide comprehensive psychological, legal and rehabilitation support to local residents affected by russian aggression. The centre was established as part of the PRO_MH_Zhytomyr project, which implements an effective model of psychosocial support at the local level. The initiative was implemented with financial support from the Polish Development Cooperation Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland and the Office of the Coordinator for Assistance Programmes in Europe and Eurasia of the US Department of State.

On 23 May, commemorative events marking Ukrainian Heroes’ Day took place in Zhytomyr. A new display featuring portraits of servicemen from Zhytomyr oblast who gave their lives for Ukraine was installed and consecrated on the Alley of Fame.

Sumy oblast

On 23 May, a russian drone attacked a funeral convoy on the outskirts of Sumy. Twelve people were injured and received medical assistance. One person was killed — a man wounded in the strike died in hospital. Serhii Kryvosheienko, Head of City Military Administration, said that russia attacked by  a fibre-optic FPV drone, which hit the roadway next to a bus.

The Regional Military Administration reported that on 22 May, at about 4:30pm, on the territory of Nova Sloboda community, a russian unmanned aerial vehicle hit a combine harvester working in a field. The combine harvester was completely destroyed. The driver managed to escape.

The City Council informed on the evening of 22 May that for the third consecutive day, russian troops have been attacking rural settlements of Vorozhbianska community by FPV drones and strike UAVs. The strikes damaged and destroyed private cars, residential houses, outbuildings and non-residential premises.

According to the State Emergency Service, fires broke out in four communities of Sumy oblast as a result of russian shelling on 22 May. Homes, utility buildings and civilian vehicles were on fire in Shostka, Hlukhiv, Svesa and Krolevets communities.

Yurii Lysenko, Head of Stetskivka Starosta District, said that in Stetskivka, Sumy region, a russian Herbera UAV hit was recorded on the evening of 22 May. The blast wave damaged windows in around three households.

The Regional Military Administration reported that as of the morning of 23 May, 12 civilians had been injured in enemy strikes across Sumy oblast over the past day. In Sumy community, a 21-year-old woman and men aged 25, 35, 35, 37, 46 and 57 were injured in an attack by russian unmanned aerial vehicles. In Velyka Pysarivka community, a 47-year-old woman was injured in an enemy drone attack. In Bilopollia community, men aged 29, 33, 36 and 78 were injured in an enemy drone strike.

Over the course of the day, from the morning of 22 May to the morning of 23 May, russian troops carried out almost 100 attacks on 41 settlements in 22 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy, Shostka and Konotop region. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted 21 hours and 12 minutes over the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

▪️in Bilopollia community, private residential houses, a summer kitchen, an outbuilding, a minibus, cars and a motorcycle were damaged;

▪️in Hlukhiv community, the premises of a retail facility and private residential houses were damaged;

▪️in Shostka community, an apartment block, private residential houses, non-residential buildings, a civilian infrastructure facility and lorries were damaged;

▪️in Trostianets community, a private residential house was damaged;

▪️in Sumy community, an administrative building, the premises of a medical facility, civilian infrastructure facilities, a residential building and a lorry were damaged;

▪️in Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house, a car and outbuildings were destroyed, and private residential houses and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;

▪️in Esman community, private residential houses and outbuildings were destroyed;

▪️in Velyka Pysarivka community, a private residential house and a private car were damaged;

▪️in Vorozhba community, a private car was destroyed, and private residential houses, the premises of an educational institution and a private car were damaged;

▪️in Krolevets community, a private residential house and an outbuilding were damaged;

▪️in Svesa community, a private car was destroyed and a private car was damaged;

▪️in Nova Slobidka community, a combine harvester was destroyed;

▪️in Lypovodolynka community, a non-residential building was damaged;

▪️in Khutir-Mykhailivskyi community, a private residential house and a car were destroyed;

▪️in Konotop community, a private residential house, a non-residential premises and outbuildings were damaged.

The Regional Police informed on 22 May that the White Angels crew evacuated six people from Sumy oblast border areas because of enemy shelling. A 77-year-old woman and a married couple were rescued from Velyka Pysarivka community. A 59-year-old man, who cannot walk after suffering a stroke, was in serious condition after an enemy strike hit his house. Three more people were evacuated from Sumy region border areas. 

Chernihiv oblast

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, reported that at around midday on 23 May, russian troops struck a civilian shop in Novhorod-Siverskyi using loitering munition, preliminarily of the Lancet type. In the morning, the enemy attacked Novhorod-Siverskyi by a Molniia-type strike drone. Private residential houses were damaged. There are injured people, who are receiving medical assistance. The scale of the destruction and the consequences of the attack are being clarified.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Regional Military Administration, said that at around 7:25pm on 22 May, russians struck the centre of Novhorod-Siverskyi by a Molniia-type drone. People’s private houses were damaged.

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that on 22 May, russian troops attacked five border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk, Horodnia and Koriukivka. The enemy carried out attacks using a mortar (2 explosions) and tube artillery (6 explosions), struck by FPV drones (21 explosions) and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (2 explosions). Eleven settlements came under enemy fire.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that an apartment caught fire in Shakhtarske as a result of a UAV attack. Emergency workers rescued 25 people, including five children.

In Petropavlivka community, a private house was damaged in a UAV strike.

Fires broke out in Vasylkivska community. An outbuilding and an administrative building were damaged. The occupiers struck the regional centre, Marhanets community and Pokrovske rural community by drones. According to updated information, two people were injured in yesterday’s attack on Chervonohryhorivka community.

In Marhanets, a 64-year-old man was injured in an FPV strike. In Nikopol, a 72-year-old man was also injured in artillery shelling. The occupiers attacked the regional centre, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka, Myrove, Pokrovske rural and urban communities by drones and artillery. Fires broke out. An apartment block, a private house, a kindergarten, a car, a bulldozer, a lorry and infrastructure were damaged. Dubovyky community was struck by a guided aerial bomb and an FPV drone. Two private homes caught fire. In Slovianska community, an outbuilding caught fire due to an FPV strike. Pokrovske community was also attacked by FPV drones. Fires broke out in two private houses.

Kirovohrad oblast

On Heroes’ Day, the “Heart Remembers Heroes. We Honour! We Remember!” motor rally was held in Kropyvnytskyi. Participants brought a Ukrainian flag and wrote the names of fallen soldiers on it. In this way, they honoured the memory of service members killed in the russian-Ukrainian war.

Poltava oblast

The State Emergency Service informed that enemy UAVs attacked an administrative building in Poltava region. A fire broke out as a result of the attack.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, said that defenders shot down a russian UAV in Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 22 May, the Defence Forces of Ukraine repelled 32 russian attacks in Huliaipole region. In particular, combat clashes took place in the areas of Nove Zaporizhzhia, Zlahoda, Solodke, Staroukrainka, Dobropillia, Hirke, Zaliznychne, Vozdvyzhivka, Olenokostiantynivka and Charivne.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that on 23 May, 1 person was killed and 2 injured as a result of russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Polohy region. The russian forces carried out more than 810 strikes on 45 settlements of Zaporizhzhia oblast. The occupiers most frequently attacked by drones.

Mykolaiv oblast

Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv RMA, during 22 May, the russian military attacked Mykolaiv oblast by drones. As a result of the attack in Mykolaiv, an administrative building was damaged. There were no casualties reported.

The russian forces attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities 8 times by FPV drones and also shelled Kutsurub community by artillery. There were no casualties or injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

The Air Force reported that today, UAVs were detected over the Black Sea heading toward Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi region.

UAVs over the Black Sea were moving toward the south of Odesa oblast, heading toward Tatarbunary.

Kherson oblast

Relying on the information provided by Kherson RMA, today during the day, a 52-year-old woman was injured as a result of russian shelling of a settlement. She was hospitalised with a mine-blast injury and concussion. Also, a 53-year-old resident of Kherson was diagnosed with a mine-blast injury.

At around 10:30am, russian occupiers struck Ukrainka village in Novooleksandrivka community by a UAV. Due to the drone attack, a 65-year-old woman was injured. She sustained blast and closed traumatic brain injuries, concussion and torso wounds.

In the morning, two residents of Pryozerne were injured due to a russian UAV attack. A 36-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man sustained blast injuries, acoustic barotrauma and acute stress reactions.

At around 9:45am, russians attacked Korabelnyi district of Kherson by a drone. Due to the UAV strike, 2 men aged 48 and 39 were injured. They sustained mine-blast injuries.

At approximately 7:45am, russians attacked a civilian car in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson by a drone. As a result of the attack, the 62-year-old driver sustained concussion, shrapnel wounds to the face, blast and closed traumatic brain injuries.

Last night, as a result of a drone striking a house in Korabelnyi district of the city, a 66-year-old woman sustained fatal injuries.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Andrii Hryhola, soldier from Cherevakha, was killed on 27 March 2026 at the front in Donetsk oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

The oblast received 20 hospital bed lifters and 14 high-precision medical anesthetic gas vaporizers worth almost UAH 3.5m from French and Ukrainian partners.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council announced that a memorial plaque to fallen Hero Volodymyr Ratych was unveiled in the city.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that Lviv oblast signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Federal State of Lower Austria. They agreed on cooperation in energy, medicine, education, infrastructure and reconstruction.

Rivne oblast

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Rivne oblast. They discussed a wide range of issues. From security to schoolchildren’s meals and repair of local roads. Following the meeting, the head of state gave a number of instructions.

Ternopil oblast

During the activity of the Ukraine Mission of Ihor Vitenko mission, 138 ambulances, 67 jeeps and about 40 other vehicles have already been transferred to the Ukrainian side. The project is an initiative that unites the efforts of Ternopil oblast and Belgium.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

By Heroes’ Day, 15 families of military personnel and veterans from Khmelnytskyi community received certificates for the purchase of housing. This year, it is planned to provide new housing for about 40 military families.

Chernivtsi oblast

On Vyshyvanka Day, the memory of the fallen Defenders was honored on the Alley of Glory by holding a touching event called Embroidered Ribbon of Memory. This symbolic gesture is a manifestation of gratitude and respect for those who gave their lives for Ukraine. Students joined the event, weaving their thoughts and sincere words of remembrance into the ribbons.

Andrii Sybiha, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, announced that NATO Foreign Ministers in Helsingborg, Ukraine received new commitments from partners regarding contributions to the PURL initiative. In addition, another source of funding was unlocked, which will help cover another part of the needs within the framework of this initiative.
