In Sumy oblast, the following settlements were affected: Korenok, Sopych, Prohres, Novovasylivka, Ryzhivka, Tovstodubove, Luzhky, Horozhanka, Topolia, Zarichchia, Rohizne, and Iskryskivshchyna; in Chernihiv oblast—Kliusy and Berylivka. The settlements of Pustohorod and Tovstodubove in Sumy oblast sustained airstrikes.
Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, there were two combat engagements; the enemy carried out four airstrikes using seven guided bombs and conducted 43 attacks on settlements and positions of Ukrainian troops, one of which involved multiple launch rocket systems.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy stormed the positions of Ukrainian units once in the vicinity of Novovasylivka.
Towards Kupiansk, one combat engagement took place today in the vicinity of Hlushkivka.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, there were 253 combat engagements in the oblast. Towards Southern Sloboda, russian troops attacked positions of the Defense Forces 10 times in the vicinity of Lyman, Vilcha, Synelnykove, and Vovchanski Khutory, and towards Izbytske.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that towards Kupiansk, the russian army attacked six times towards Kurylivka, Kivsharivka, Novoplatonivka, Novoosynove, and Hlushkivka.
Vitalii Sarantsev, Head of the Communications Department of the 14th Army Corps, stated that russian troops are assaulting and striking the positions of the Defense Forces in the area of Kozacha Lopan.
Shelling
Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that a strike by a russian drone was recorded on the outskirts of the city in the Nemyshlianskyi district of Kharkiv.
Viacheslav Zadorenko, Head of Derhachi City Military Administration, reported that at approximately 13:30, a russian FPV drone attacked a civilian car in Slatyne. The 37-year-old driver suffered an acute stress reaction and did not require hospitalization.
Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv Settlement Military Administration, reported that at around 11:00, a russian FPV drone hit a civilian Renault Duster traveling along a road near Zrubanka, Zolochiv community. A 65-year-old man sustained multiple shrapnel wounds to his arm, leg, and abdominal cavity and was hospitalized. Following the initial strike, the russian army attacked the vehicle a second time, completely destroying it.
Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv Settlement Military Administration, also reported that russian FPV drones attacked Petrivske and Liutivka in the Zolochiv community. In Petrivske, a two-story residential building was destroyed and a fire broke out after eight hits. In Liutivka, houses and outbuildings were damaged as a result of five strikes.
Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reported that a russian UAV attacked a civilian car in Zolochiv. A 66-year-old man was injured, and medics are providing him with assistance.
Oleksandr Balo, Head of Barvinkove City Military Administration, reported that at approximately 05:00, an explosion occurred in Barvinkove, injuring two women. A 48-year-old woman sustained a laceration to her face, and an 83-year-old woman suffered a foot amputation. The police are establishing the circumstances of the incident, and the city council urged residents not to go outside unless absolutely necessary.
Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reports that over the past day, Kharkiv and 17 other settlements in the region came under enemy fire. One person was killed and another was injured: a 40-year-old man was killed on the Ring Road near Lisne, Mala Danylivka community, and a 37-year-old man was injured in Ivano-Shiychyne, Bohodukhiv community.
russian troops used UAVs to attack the Kyivskyi and Nemyshlianskyi districts of Kharkiv. Throughout the day, the russian army deployed MLRS, six Molniya UAVs, 17 FPV drones, and five unidentified drones across Kharkiv oblast, according to Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.
In Kharkiv, a private house was damaged. In Bohodukhiv, Kharkiv, and Chuhuiv districts, private houses, outbuildings, cars, a grain storage facility, and other civilian infrastructure objects were damaged.
Other
Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reports that the transit evacuation point in Lozova received 176 people over the past day. Since the point began operating, 35,441 people have been registered there.
The National Police of Kharkiv oblast reported that officers from the White Angel special unit, together with a Red Cross rapid response team, evacuated 12 people from the Zolochiv community. Among the evacuees were six children, the youngest being two years old.

Oleksandr Tertyshnyi, Head of Borova Settlement Military Administration, reported that russian FPV drones have begun reaching settlements on the right bank of the Borova community. According to him, it is currently safer to evacuate from the right bank than from the opposite side.
Kharkiv Regional Military Administration reported that another underground school has begun operating in Savyntsi, Kharkiv oblast—marking the first safe educational space established on the premises of a local lyceum. Thanks to the shelter, more than 350 students can study in a hybrid format, with the space designed to accommodate over 400 people in total. The school is equipped with water supply, ventilation, heating, multimedia classrooms, a 160 kW generator, and accessibility features including tactile paving, handrails, Braille signage, and elevators. Currently, 23 underground schools are operational in Kharkiv oblast, with an additional 13 under construction.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, announced that protection along the ring road in Kharkiv will be reinforced following a russian FPV drone attack that killed a truck driver and burned a police car.
Donetsk Oblast
Frontline
Towards Pokrovsk, the russian army stormed the positions of the Defense Forces 52 times, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The occupiers attacked near Zatyshok, Nykanorivka, Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Hryshyne, Kotlyne, Kamianka, Serhiivka, Udachne, Molodetske, Novopavlivka, Novopidhorodne, Bilytske, Shevchenko, and Myrne.
Towards Kostiantynivka, Ukrainian military forces repelled an additional 25 russian assaults, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian forces struck at least 12 russian targets in the Donbas overnight. Among them were an anti-aircraft missile system, ammunition and fuel depots, UAV command posts, and a crossing over the Siverskyi Donets River.
Kostiantyn Melnykov, press officer for the 24th Separate Mechanized Brigade, stated that russian occupiers are remotely mining roads leading to Chasiv Yar, particularly near Kostiantynivka. Ukrainian troops are detecting “zhduny” (reconnaissance/loitering) drones and various types of mines along logistics routes.
Shelling
In Sloviansk, an unknown object exploded in the hands of a 17-year-old teenager. The boy lost his fingers and was hospitalized at the city hospital, according to Vadym Liakh, Head of Sloviansk City Military Administration. Overnight, Sloviansk and Cherkaske came under fire, damaging a private house and a gas station; no casualties were reported.
On May 21, police recorded 1,421 strikes by the russian army on the frontline and residential sector of Donetsk oblast. Twelve settlements were hit: Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Sviatohirsk, Sloviansk, Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, Shabelkivka, Virivka, Dmytrivka, Dolyna, Kindrativka, Marivka, and Maiaky. 88 civilian objects sustained damage, including 64 residential buildings.
In Druzhkivka, russian troops attacked 16 times using guided bombs and drones, killing four people and injuring nine others. Two apartment buildings, eight private houses, a shop, and a civilian car were damaged. Police paramedics continue to rescue the severely wounded under fire. Since the beginning of May, russian attacks in the city have killed at least nine civilians and injured 33. Law enforcement noted that there are often only a few minutes to rescue victims before a potential repeat strike.
In Kramatorsk, the russian army directed four KAB-250 guided bombs and six drones of various types at the city. One person was injured. The strikes damaged an apartment building, 49 private houses, two enterprises, a shop, a non-residential building, an infrastructure facility, and three cars. According to Kramatorsk City Military Administration, the morning strikes on May 21 against the private sector damaged over 70 private houses in total, while also hitting a printing house, an industrial zone, and critical infrastructure.
In Dmytrivka, a civilian was injured and a car was damaged as a result of an FPV drone strike.
Occupiers struck Sloviansk with four drones, damaging a private house and a civilian car. A post office was damaged in Sviatohirsk; a private house, a shop, an outbuilding, and a car were damaged in Shabelkivka; and one private house was damaged in both Marivka and Maiaky.
Other
Kramatorsk has updated its public alert system; a separate specific siren signal will now warn residents of imminent airstrike threats to the city.
Approximately 400 residents remain in the frontline Andriivka community in Donetsk oblast, according to Tetiana Paniv, a social protection specialist at the Settlement Military Administration. Before the full-scale invasion, over 2,200 people lived across the community’s five villages.
Volunteers from the “Breath of Hope Mission” charity fund deliver 1,000 loaves of bread weekly to the residents of Druzhkivka. The volunteers bake the bread themselves, distribute it to frontline settlements, and assist local residents with evacuation.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that 1,673 veterans are currently studying within the ministry’s higher education system, while 820 have already graduated and acquired a new specialization. This year, police officers, rescuers, border guards, and National Guard members discharged due to health conditions can enroll under state funding at 11 educational institutions within the ministry system. Available fields include psychology, cybersecurity, law enforcement, civil protection, and information technology.
Sviatoslav Palamar (callsign “Kalyna”), Deputy Commander of the Azov Brigade, reported that an Azov military medic who left Azovstal and was taken into russian captivity died in a russian pre-trial detention center due to torture. According to him, forensic experts established the cause of death following a body exchange.
Luhansk oblast
According to Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk Regional Military AdministrationIn Luhansk oblast, russian troops directed 19 drones at the fortifications of Ukrainian defenders, struck twice with tube artillery, twice with MLRS, and deployed mortars and automatic grenade launchers. Towards Lyman, the occupiers attacked in the vicinity of four settlements.
Medical college students from Altai were sent to military hospitals in temporarily occupied Luhansk oblast for a month due to a shortage of doctors. According to the trainees themselves, they performed 12 surgeries daily, which indicates the scale of losses among russian servicemen.
The occupiers propose to include Sievierodonetsk in a cultural and educational tourist route, specifically highlighting the folk museum of the history of the “Azot” association. At the same time, it was russian troops who struck the building housing the museum in 2022: the premises burned down, and the occupation authorities have not engaged in its restoration.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that the Kyiv HOA Forum is being held in the capital for the third time. This year, it is dedicated to preparations for the upcoming heating season. According to him, there are over 12,000 apartment blocks in Kyiv. Five financial and technical support programmes for housing modernisation are currently in operation. Since the start of the full-scale war, the city has invested nearly 2 billion hryvnias in the energy resilience and energy efficiency of buildings.
Distributed cogeneration facilities with a capacity of around 40 MW have already been built in the capital, equipped with second-level protection from the outset. Two diesel power plants with a capacity of over 10 MW have also been commissioned, which will provide backup power supply to water supply facilities.
According to the Regional Military Administration, the Kyiv Regional Centre for Training the Population in National Resistance is inviting residents of the region to a four-week course. The programme covers 15 areas of training. During the sessions, participants will acquire practical skills under the guidance of veterans. Training will take place only at weekends.
The Regional Military Administration reported that the final bell for pupils at the Kyiv Lyceum named after Kostyantyn Svetenk will ring within the walls of the already renovated school. Belgian partners helped with its restoration following russian shelling.
The city council has announced that blood donation days will be held in Bucha on 29 and 30 May. The blood collected will be donated to military and civilian patients.
Zhytomyr oblast
The Zhytomyr Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital has announced the receipt of seven convertible beds and an equal number of sets of bed linen. The furniture and soft furnishings for the use of patients’ parents were delivered by representatives of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Ukraine.
In Malyn, Zhytomyr region, on 21 May, Vyshyvanka Day, the “Embroidered Ribbon of Remembrance” event was held for the first time to honour Ukrainian defenders. Among the community members who gathered in Soborna Square were the relatives and loved ones of fallen Ukrainian defenders, as well as those who are missing in action or held captive.
Sumy oblast
Sumy City Military Administration reported in the evening that on 21 May, four FPV drone strikes and five air strikes with unknown weapons were recorded in Sumy community. Five people were injured. Twenty-two private residential houses were damaged, and six non-residential outbuildings were destroyed. A production premises was also damaged. Power supply, which had been cut off on three streets as a result of the strike, was restored. Five households remained without gas supply. Restoration work is ongoing.
The State Emergency Service of Sumy oblast informed that on 21 May in Bilopollia, a russian drone hit a civilian car parked near a grocery shop. After the strike, the car caught fire, and the flames spread to the exterior cladding of the shop, where five people, including one child, were inside. The State Emergency Service specialists quickly extinguished the fire. No one was injured.
According to Sumy Regional Military Administration, as a result of enemy strikes in Sumy oblast over the past day, as of the morning of 22 May, 11 civilians were injured:
▪️in Sumy community, a child, a 13-year-old boy, as well as men aged 49, 70 and 73, and women aged 81 and 72, were injured in an enemy attack;
▪️in Vorozhba community, three people were injured in an enemy drone strike: a 71-year-old man and women aged 65 and 67;
▪️in Znob-Novhorodske community, a 42-year-old man was injured in a russian drone strike;
▪️in Kyrykivka community, a 63-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman were injured after an enemy drone hit a car.
A 72-year-old woman who was injured in Konotop community as a result of an enemy UAV attack on the night of 20 May sought medical assistance.
Over the day, from the morning of 21 May to the morning of 22 May, russian troops carried out 85 attacks on 33 settlements in 17 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used artillery, mortars, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Over the day, the air raid alert in the oblast lasted 21 hours and 21 minutes.
Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:
▪️in Mykolaivka rural community, a non-residential premises was damaged;
▪️in Velyka Pysarivka community, a civilian infrastructure facility and a bus were damaged;
▪️in Sumy community, private residential houses, cars, a non-residential premises and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
▪️in Bilopollia community, a private car and a minibus were damaged;
▪️in Vorozhba community, a private residential house, an outbuilding and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
▪️in Kyrykivka community, a civilian infrastructure facility and a private car were damaged;
▪️in Esman community, private residential houses and outbuildings were destroyed;
▪️in Shostka community, a private residential house was destroyed, while a private residential house and outbuildings were damaged;
▪️in Svesa community, a private residential house was damaged;
▪️in Hlukhiv community, a private residential house, an outbuilding and a bus were damaged;
▪️in Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house and outbuildings were damaged;
▪️in Yampil community, a private residential house was damaged;
▪️in Znob-Novhorodske community, non-residential premises were damaged;
▪️in Khutir-Mykhailivskyi community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged.
Ahead of Heroes’ Day, a photo exhibition titled “Sumy Residents at War. Resilience. Strength. Courage” opened at Sumy Regional Universal Scientific Library. The exhibition includes 23 photo posters featuring servicemen who are residents of Sumy oblast and are currently defending the state. The photographs show moments of combat work, as well as the service and living conditions of Ukrainian defenders.
Chernihiv oblast
The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine reported that pilots of reconnaissance and attack UAVs of the 105th Border Detachment named after Prince Volodymyr the Great from Chernihiv oblast destroyed russian guns, electronic warfare systems, drones and military vehicles. State Border Guard Service units use equipment ranging from high-speed FPV drones to heavy Vampire-type bomber drones in their work.
Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that at about 1am on 22 May, a russian attack drone struck the border town of Novhorod-Siverskyi. The UAV hit an outbuilding near a private house. No reports of civilian casualties had been received.
Chernihiv Border Detachment informed that on 21 May, russian troops attacked three border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka, Snovsk and Horodnia. The enemy carried out strikes with multiple launch rocket systems, causing 20 explosions; FPV drones, causing 13 explosions; and dropped explosive devices from UAVs, causing six explosions. Six settlements came under enemy fire.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that the occupiers attacked the region by UAVs. They targeted Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka and Myrove communities.
As a result of a UAV attack in Kryvyi Rih, an enterprise was damaged. Apostolove and Hrushivka communities were also struck. An outbuilding and infrastructure were damaged.
Fires broke out in Pavlohrad due to a UAV attack. Two private homes and three cars were damaged.
A fire broke out in Pokrovske community. A car was damaged.
Sixteen people were injured: two in Nikopol, 13 in Marhanets, and another woman in Chervonohryhorivka community. The enemy struck with drones and artillery. Myrove and Pokrovske rural communities were also targeted.
Three apartment blocks, a college, a shopping centre, four cars, an outbuilding, an administrative building and infrastructure were damaged.
Petropavlivka and Pokrovske communities were attacked by FPV drones. In the latter, three outbuildings and a car caught fire.
As a result of a UAV attack in Apostolove community, a petrol station was damaged.
Enemy struck Bozhedarivka community by a UAV. A fire broke out, and infrastructure was damaged.
Vinnytsia oblast
In Zhukivtsi, Zhmerynka community, Oleksandr Lysakov, who was released from captivity, was welcomed. He had been considered missing since January 2025.
Kirovohrad oblast
Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration informed that a drone damaged transport infrastructure in Dolynska community as a result of an enemy attack.
Poltava oblast
According to Poltava Regional Military Administration, at night, the enemy attacked an enterprise in Myrhorod region. Equipment was damaged as a result of a UAV hit.
During the day, an enemy UAV fell on the territory of an enterprise in Kremenchuk region.
Cherkasy oblast
In Cherkasy, a farewell ceremony will be held on Sunday for Azov soldier Oleksandr Krokhmaliuk, who was killed in russian captivity. In September 2025, his body was returned during a 1,000-for-1,000 repatriation stage.

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration head Ivan Fedorov reported that today, 22 May, russian military attacked the frontline settlement of Komyshuvakha suing UAVs. One person was killed and another was injured.
Today, 22 May, russian forces attacked Orikhiv in Polohy region with a guided aerial bomb. According to Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration head Ivan Fedorov, a man was injured in the attack. Residential houses were damaged.
Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that on 21 May, the occupiers carried out 813 strikes on 45 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched 17 airstrikes on Malokaterynivka, Zarichne, Komyshuvakha, Samiilivka, Hryhorivka, Richne, Zhovta Krucha, Preobrazhenka, Zalyvne, Vilne, Novoselivka, Danylivka, Dolynka, Mala Tokmachka, Shyroke, and Vozdvyzhivka. 549 UAVs of various types, mostly FPV drones, attacked Zaporizhzhia, Lysohirka, Novorozivka, Slavne, Tavriiske, Novoivanivka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Lukianivske, Pavlivka, Mali Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Huliaipilske, Hirke, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, Pryluky, Staroukrainka, Sviatopetrivka, Olenokostiantynivka, Tsvitkove, and Preobrazhenka. An MLRS strike hit Charivne. russian forces carried out 246 artillery strikes on Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, Pryluky, Hirke, Huliaipilske, Staroukrainka, and Olenokostiantynivka. Authorities received 44 reports of damage to infrastructure, housing, and vehicles.
According to analysts from the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian forces advanced south of Mala Tokmachka near Orikhiv, as well as in the areas of Novodanylivka, Stepove, and Kamianske.
According to the General Staff, as of 16:00 on 22 May, the Defense Forces successfully repelled 20 enemy attacks near Dobropillia, Hirke, Zaliznychne, Vozdvyzhivka, Olenokostiantynivka, and Charivne towards Huliaipole. One combat engagement was ongoing. Over the previous day, 21 May, the Defense Forces repelled 28 russian attacks towards Huliaipole and one more towards Orikhiv.
During the night of 22 May, explosions were heard in the temporarily occupied cities of Berdiansk and Melitopol in Zaporizhzhia oblast. According to Petro Andriushchenko, head of the Center for the Study of Occupation, energy infrastructure and a railway hub were hit in occupied Melitopol. As a result, most districts of the region lost electricity supply. Several explosions were also heard in the port area of occupied Berdiansk. Details are being clarified.
IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant had been operating on only one power supply line for more than two months. The IAEA is therefore holding talks with Ukraine and russia on a localized ceasefire to allow repair work to be carried out. In addition, the IAEA team received information about numerous drone attacks near the plant and in Enerhodar, where most of the staff live. During one such incident, up to 40 drones were reportedly observed.
Mykolaiv oblast
Explosions were heard in Mykolaiv during the day on 22 May. Ukraine’s Air Force warned about the threat of russian strike drones. According to Head of the Regional Military Administration Vitalii Kim, as of 15:17 no one was injured in the attack.
Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that on 21 May the enemy attacked the region with Shahed-type drones. As a result of the attack and falling debris, windows of a hospital administrative building were damaged and a fire broke out at an industrial facility in Mykolaiv. No casualties were reported.
In addition, yesterday the enemy attacked Ochakiv community 10 times with FPV drones. No casualties were reported.
Kherson oblast
Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that this morning, 22 May, russian forces shelled Korabelnyi district of Kherson. Six people were injured.
It is reported that russian forces also attacked civilians in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson today. One person was killed and another was injured.
At around noon, russian occupiers attacked a cyclist with a drone in the village of Kostyrka in Beryslav region. The man suffered shrapnel wounds to his face, chest, abdomen, arms, and legs, as well as a concussion, blast injury, traumatic brain injury, and closed head injury.
At noon, russians struck the village of Ukrainka in Nova Oleksandrivka community with a drone. Three people were injured.
Today, eight more people sought medical assistance following previous russian attacks. A 31-year-old Kherson resident who came under a russian drone strike in the city’s Tsentralnyi district was diagnosed with a blast injury and concussion. A resident of Komyshany, injured on the evening of 19 May during a russian drone strike on a house, suffered a blast injury, concussion, and traumatic brain injury. Three people injured in yesterday’s russian airstrike on Bilozerka were diagnosed with blast injuries and concussions. Two more victims of the same attack were also diagnosed with blast injuries and concussions. A resident of Zelenivka, attacked by a russian drone during the night of 18 May, was hospitalized with a blast injury and concussion.
The Police of Kherson oblast reported that on 21 May the russian forces attacked Kherson, Stanislav, Antonivka, Tomyna Balka, Bilozerka, Romashkove, Rozlyv, Poniativka, Shyroka Balka, Sofiivka, Tokarivka, Sadove, Zymivnyk, Prydniprovske, Komyshany, Beryslav, Rakivka, Tiahynka, Biliaivka, Myroliubivka, Krasnosilske, Charivne, Kozatske, and Vesele. Six apartment buildings and eight private houses, a kindergarten, five vehicles, two garages, a minibus, and an excavator were damaged. Eight people were injured as a result of russian aggression, including two police explosive ordnance technicians.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of 16:00 on 22 May, the enemy carried out one attack on Ukrainian defensive positions near the settlement of Hola Prystan towards Kherson.
