The enemy from the territory of the russian federation launched artillery attacks on the vicinity of the settlements of Pokrovka, Starykove, Brusky, Novodmytrivka, Maryine, Svarkove, Myropilske, Simeikine in Sumy oblast; Kliusy, Liskivshchyna, Baranivka, Krasnyi Khutir, Arkhipivka in Chernihiv oblast; Klynova, Novoselivka, Tymofiivka in Kharkiv oblast.
Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked the positions of the Defense Forces four times in the vicinity of the settlement of Vovchansk.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy tried to advance to Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of Petropavlivka and Nova Kruhliakivka twice. The defense forces successfully repelled both enemy attacks.
Towards Lyman, there were six combat clashes in the vicinity of the settlements of Hrekivka, Novyi Mir, Torske and Ridkodub.
Towards Siversk, Ukrainina defenders stopped two enemy attacks in the vicinity of Hryhorivka and Bilohorivka.

Six clashes are still ongoing. The enemy also launched airstrikes in the vicinity of the settlements of Pokrovsk, Stepanivka, Novotoretske, and Hnativka.
Towards Novopavlivka, the aggressor attacked nine times in the vicinity of Shevchenko and Novopol. One battle is currently ongoing.
Towards Huliaipole, the enemy attacked Vysoke once. Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled the occupiers’ attempt to advance. In addition, the settlement of Huliaipole was subjected to airstrikes.
Towards Orikhiv, the enemy conducted two offensive actions in the vicinity of Novodanylivka. At the same time, airstrikes were carried out on the settlements of Kamianske and Stepnohirsk.
Towards Kherson, the enemy did not conduct offensive actions.
Towards Kursk, nine battle clashes have already been recorded. The enemy conducted the same number of air strikes, dropping 12 guided bombs on settlements and positions of the Defense Forces. In addition, it carried out 130 artillery attacks, including two from multiple launch rocket systems.

The Air Force reports that on the night of May 22, russia attacked the territory of Ukraine with 128 Shahed strike UAVs, as well as an Iskander-M ballistic missile. 112 drones were neutralized.

Kharkiv oblast
Frontline
Towards Kharkiv, there were 144 combat clashes. According to the RMA,the enemy tried in vain to advance six times in the vicinity of Vovchansk, Kamianka and towards Mala Shapkivka.
Towards Kupiansk, there were four attacks yesterday. The defense forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions near Kindrashivka, Zahryzove and Nova Kruhliakivka.
Shelling
Viktor Tereshchenko, Head of the RMA, says that in Velykyi Burluk, a russian drone hit the regional court building this morning and destroyed it, and about five apartment buildings located nearby were also damaged.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv RMA, reports that there was no missile strike on Kharkiv tonight, there was an air battle as a result of which debris fell in Kholodnohirskyi district.
Over the past day, the city of Kharkiv and 7 settlements of the oblast were subjected to enemy strikes.
As a result of shelling in the city of Kharkiv, women aged 60, 63 and 68 were injured; in the village of Hrushivka, Kindrashivka community, a 39-year-old man was injured; in the village of Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, Kupiansk community, a man was killed, a 66-year-old and 70-year-old women were injured; in the city of Kupiansk, a 73-year-old and 44-year-old women were injured. Donetsk oblast

The russian military reduced the number of assaults towards Lyman to 17 and towards Novopavlivka to 19. The day before, there were 30 and 33 attacks, respectively.
The russian army attacked towards Pokrovsk the most, where Ukrainian defenders stopped 54 assaults in the areas of the settlements of Yablunivka, Zoria, Shevchenko Pershe, Nova Poltavka, Myroliubivka, Yelizavetivka, Lysivka, Dachenske, Kotlyne, Novosergiivka, Udachne, Troitske, Promin, Kotliarivka, Andriivka and towards Popovyi Yar and Novomykolaivka.
Viktor Trehubov, Spokesman for the Khortytsia unit, says that Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding back the russian offensive towards Novopavlivka: russian troops cannot gain a foothold in Bohatyr and Kostiantynopil despite constant attacks and shelling. The russian federation is trying to break through to the border with Dnipropetrovsk oblast, but without success.
Shelling
Donetsk oblast prosecutor’s office reported that at 10:35, russian troops fired from a Lancet UAV at Raihorodok in Donetsk oblast and hit a local shop. A 51-year-old kiosk saleswoman was killed. A 39-year-old resident was injured and hospitalized.
Andrii Pankov, Head of the RMA, reports that russian troops struck Oleksiivo-Druzhkivka in the morning. The russian army struck the private sector. The roofs of houses were damaged, windows were broken. There were no dead or wounded, people living nearby left.
The head of the RMA says that at 7:30, russian troops shelled Kostiantynivka with artillery. As a result of the attack, one person was killed, another person was injured and taken to a medical facility. Three facades of private residential buildings and critical infrastructure were damaged. Later, the russian army attacked the city with a Molniya-2 strike UAV.

At dawn, Russian troops fired from Geran-2 UAVs on the outskirts of the city of Sloviansk, reported the head of the MVA Vadim Lyakh. Technical structures were damaged. There were no deaths or injuries.
Oleksandr Honcharenko, Head of the RMA, reports that also at night, russian troops fired at Kramatorsk, using three Geran-2 strike UAVs, and hit an industrial zone. According to preliminary information, there were no deaths or injuries.
the State Emergency Service reports that rescuers extinguished a fire on the territory of a local enterprise in Kramatorsk due to night shelling. Emergency workers spent 5 hours extinguishing the fire on an area of 750 sq. m.
As a result of the shelling of Rodynske on the night of May 22, a driver of the State Emergency Service was injured while performing his duties.

russian troops have carried out 2,344 strikes on the front line and residential areas. 18 air bombs hit civilians directly. 9 settlements were under fire: the cities of Druzhkivka, Kostiantynivka, Lyman, Myrnograd, Sviatohirsk, the village of Berestok, the villages of Ivanopillia, Lozove, and Stepanivka. 79 civilian objects were destroyed, including 56 residential buildings.
russians launched 7 GAB-250 bombs and two drones on Kostiantynivka, and also shelled the city with Smerch MLRSs. 5 people were injured, 8 apartment buildings and 10 private houses, an educational institution, an administrative building, a shop, a hospital, a memorial building, a religious object, 4 garages, and 2 civilian cars were damaged.
The occupiers directed three bombs and a drone at Berestok of Illinivka community – they injured three residents, damaged 12 private houses, a shop, and a cultural center. In neighboring Stepanivka, 4 private houses and a garage were damaged by shelling. In Ivano-Frankivsk, 6 private homes were damaged due to a GAB hit.
The enemy dropped six GAB-250 aerial bombs on Myrnohrad – 7 apartment buildings and 5 private houses were destroyed.
In Druzhkivka, Lyman, and Lozove of Lyman community, enemy drones damaged one private house each. In Sviatohirsk, three UAVs hit a private household and a restaurant.
Other
Donetsk Regional State Administration informs that as of May 21, five children remain in the village of Shcherbynivka of Toretsk community.
In total, 371 children remain in 273 families living in 16 settlements of the oblast, where the forced evacuation of families with children has been announced. The largest number of children currently remains in Druzhkivka community.
Reuters war correspondent Ivan Liubysh-Kirdey received the Georgy Gongadze Prize. The winner was announced on May 21. In August 2024, he was seriously injured as a result of the shelling of the Sapfir hotel in Kramatorsk, survived a coma, and is currently recovering.
A clinical and diagnostic laboratory damaged during shelling by the russian army in early 2024 has been restored in Sloviansk. The total cost of the restoration is over UAH 6 million. The laboratory serves not only residents of the Slavic community, but also displaced persons and military personnel.
Luhansk oblast
The invaders attacked 19 times towards Lyman and Siversk. According to the RMA, in Luhansk oblast, our fighters repelled enemy assaults in the areas of Belogorivka and Hrekivka, as well as in Serebrianka Forest. The enemy had artillery and aviation support there. He used multiple launch rocket systems twice. He fired 18 times from barrel artillery. 156 enemy drones tried to perform combat missions.
In the so-called “lpr” this year, more than 100 schools will be closed. The main reason is the lack of children. In parallel with numerous statements about the alleged return of people to the occupied territories, the occupation authorities report empty schools in many cities and villages. According to the invaders, the parent community supported the liquidation of educational institutions.
Many settlements captured by russia in 2022 lack medicines. Pharmacy chains refuse to open sales points or organize war trade due to security issues, because they do not have permission. In turn, the occupation administration of Luhansk oblast has not been going to issue anything for three years and is shifting this responsibility to the kremlin, so that they can grant permission to enterprises from the “lpr” to sell medicines on the territory of the “lpr”.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
The head of Kyiv City Military Administration, Timur Tkachenko, reported that on the morning of 22 May, russia attacked Kyiv with drones. The wreckage of the downed drone fell on the territory of a school in the Darnytskyi district. The air alert in Kyiv was announced at 7:39 a.m. due to the threat of a UAV.
The RMA informed that 142 cultural sites and religious buildings in Kyiv oblast were destroyed or damaged as a result of russian aggression; 77% of them have already been restored.
According to mayor Oleksandr Markushyn, 34-year-old border guard from Irpin, Staff Sergeant Viktoriia Snizhko, was killed on her way back from a combat mission. Viktoriia was born and lived in Irpin, and since 2017 she had served in the Border Guard Service as an inspector at the Zhulyany checkpoint. The funeral will take place on 22 May at the city’s old cemetery.
In mid-May, Ukrainian Women’s Guard instructors conducted a three-day large-scale mine safety training for students of Lyceum No. 257 ‘Sinehozerny’. Eight intensive trainings covered 29 classes of the lyceum, with over 800 students learning vital life-saving information. The project is being implemented with the support of partner Nova Ukraine.
The RMA announced that Kyiv oblast will expand cooperation with the Italian region of Tuscany. The project includes the restoration of cultural facilities damaged and destroyed by the russians.
On 21 May, a mobile blood centre was deployed at the Kyiv City Military Administration’s internal site. Employees and officers of the Kyiv City Council and Kyiv City Military Administration, as well as military personnel, were able to donate blood.
Zhytomyr oblast
The regional SES reported that 10 hectares of forests are planned to be cleared of mines in Zhytomyr oblast by the end of 2025. The sappers have begun a planned task to clear the area contaminated by explosive ordnance as a result of hostile aggression.
Sumy oblast
The Regional Military Administration reported that over the course of a day, from the morning of 21 May to the morning of 22 May, russian forces carried out more than 70 attacks on 29 settlements across 14 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. Across Sumy Oblast, the enemy actively used multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), launching more than 30 strikes, as well as dropping VOG grenades from UAVs, with nearly 30 attacks. Additionally, missile strikes and drone attacks were also carried out.
As a result of russian shelling over the past day in Sumy Oblast, a non-residential building and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged in Velyka Pysarivka community, along with private residential houses in Bilopillia and Lebedyn communities.
Over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and civic organizations from border communities, evacuated 25 people.
According to “Andrex” enterprise, during the night of 15 May, russian forces targeted the “Andrex” enterprise in Velyka Chernechchyna — one of Ukraine’s largest manufacturers of disposable tableware — by 20 drones. Within 45 minutes, the drones destroyed over a thousand tonnes of finished products and raw materials, along with all the equipment and buildings of the enterprise. More than 100 people lost their jobs.

The commander of the 5th rifle battalion of the russian Armed Forces has been charged in absentia with violating the laws and customs of war. According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, during the occupation of Sumy Oblast in March 2022, the suspect declared himself the commandant of the village of Boromlya and carried out illegal searches and looting of civilians. Alongside other occupying forces, he threatened local residents with weapons and physical violence. In particular, civilians with close relatives serving in the Ukrainian military were subjected to abuse, forced at gunpoint into the street, and subjected to mock executions.
Chernihiv oblast
Over the course of 21 May, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv Oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (2 strikes), multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) attacks (15 strikes), and artillery shelling (47 strikes). Additionally, they launched FPV-drone attacks (27 strikes), an airstrike by a “Molniya” aircraft-type combat drone (1 strike), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (21 strikes).
Chernihiv Border Detachment reported on 21 May, in Semenivka community, a civilian man was killed in Khotiivka village as a result of an FPV-drone attack. In Medvedivka village, russian strikes caused fires in non-residential buildings.
Department for Civil Protection and Defence Affairs of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration informed that as a result of russian strikes on 21 May, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged in Semenivka, a non-residential building caught fire in Yanzhulivka, and a private house was set ablaze in Hremiach.
According to Andrii Portnyi, Head of Sosnytsia village, of In Sosnytsia community, temporary housing is being prepared for internally displaced persons. Currently, the first three houses have been installed and are ready to be connected to utilities. The houses are equipped with all necessary amenities.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the RMA, reported that during the night, Ukrainian air defence forces shot down 11 enemy UAVs. As a result of the russian attack on Pavlohrad, fires broke out, damaging an enterprise, an outbuilding and a power line. In the evening and into the morning, russian forces continued to strike Nikopol region, primarily by UAVs and artillery. The attacks targeted the regional centre and Marhanets community. In Nikopol, 4 private houses and a power line were damaged by artillery shelling. In Mezhova community of Synelnykove region, a drone strike damaged a vehicle.
During the day, russian troops launched more than 20 attacks on Nikopol region, by drones and artillery. Strikes targeted the regionalcentre, Myrove, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities. In Nikopol, 5 private houses, 4 outbuildings and a boiler house at a gymnasium were damaged. The enemy launched KAB attacks on Novopavlivka community in Synelnykove region.
Vinnytsia oblast
In Vinnytsia, residents commemorated 9 fallen fighters from the special-purpose unit KORD. They were killed in 2022 in a russian missile strike in Zaporizhzhia oblast.
Kirovohrad oblast
Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, informed that during the day, the enemy launched 3 ballistic missile strikes on Kirovohrad oblast.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, stated that overnight, air defence forces shot down 6 russian UAVs over Cherkasy oblast. Preliminary reports indicate that in Zvenyhorodka region, debris damaged 2 private houses, several vehicles and power lines. 3 people sought medical attention for acute stress reactions.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, a 59-year-old man sustained severe injuries as a result of russian artillery shelling of Prymorske village in Zaporizhzhia oblast. He was hospitalised.
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 21 May, the Defence Forces repelled 4 russian attacks in Orikhiv region and 3 in Huliaipole region. Clashes took place near Stepove, Shcherbaky, Vysoke and toward Pavlivka.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 21 May, the russian military carried out 495 attacks on 13 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. These included 303 drone strikes – mostly FPV drones – targeting Marivka, Magdalynivka, Prymorske, Kamianske, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novodanylivka, Novodarivka and Charivne.
Mykolaiv oblast
Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, reported that during the night of 22 May, Ukrainian air defence forces shot down 18 Shahed drones over Mykolaiv oblast.
The RMA stated that Mykolaiv and surrounding areas were attacked by Shahed drones during the night of 22 May. As of now, there were no casualties or damages reported. Also, on 21 May, russian forces carried out 3 FPV drone attacks on Kutsurub community and 2 on Ochakiv community. There were no injuries reported.
Odesa oblast
According to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am on 22 May, there were no enemy ships detected in the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. However, 3 enemy ships remain in the Mediterranean Sea, 1 of which is equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 8 missiles.
Kherson oblast
Referring to the RMA, the russian military shelled Novooleksandrivka village by artillery. A 71-year-old man sustained a blast injury and chest wounds.
Based on the information provided by the Prosecutor’s Office, at around 1:40pm, russian forces shelled Beryslav. A man and a woman were killed. Law enforcement has launched a criminal investigation.
According to the City Military Administration, the russian forces dropped explosives from a drone in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, injuring a 68-year-old woman with a blast injury and shrapnel wounds.
Referring to the Regional Military Administration, In Osokorivka village, russian artillery wounded a 26-year-old man. He sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to his leg.
The CMA reported that around 8am, the enemy attacked Komyshany by a drone. A 52-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman sought medical assistance; both sustained concussions and blast injuries.
The Prosecutor’s Office reported that in the morning, russian artillery shelled Kherson, killing an 85-year-old woman in her home. Law enforcement initiated a pre-trial investigation into the war crime committed by the russian federation.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 21 May, the russian forces shelled 35 settlements in Kherson oblast. 11 people were injured. Gas pipelines, 4 high-rise buildings, 9 private houses and several vehicles were damaged.
The RMA confirmed thay a woman from Bilozirka sought medical care after being injured in a russian drone strike. The 34-year-old was hospitalised.

Volyn oblast
In Lutsk, thanks to the implementation of the winning project of the Participation Budget, 20 multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (FPV) were sent to the sniper unit of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The project was the result of the active participation of community residents, who supported the initiative to provide the military with modern technologies to increase the effectiveness of combat missions.
Zakarpattia oblast
The RMA held a meeting with Pavol Panis, Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Uzhhorod. They discussed the preparation of the 1st Slovak-Ukrainian Congress of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery, which is planned to be held in Lviv.

The RMA reported that as part of the Side by Side: United Communities all-Ukrainian initiative, aimed at supporting and integrating residents and communities of frontline regions, Bolekhiv region is accepting 20 children from Mykolaiv region.
Lviv oblast
1-day military-patriotic exercises Active and Brave Youth have begun in Lviv oblast. 30 students of the Technological Vocational College of the National Technical University of Ukraine have already been trained.
Another batch of modern electrical equipment has arrived in Lviv as part of cooperation with the GoLocal NGO, GIZ Ukraine, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine and the Bundesministerium fur Wirtschaft und Klimaschutz (BMWK) within the framework of the German-Ukrainian Energy Partnership. The RMA reported that Makivska community has been given a local centralized alert system, which will allow the population to be promptly informed about threats or emergencies.
Chernivtsi oblast
A free social taxi is being launched in Chernivtsi. Volunteers come to your home, help you get out, transfer to a car (and if necessary, there are wheelchairs and stretchers), accompany you to the hospital, wait for you, and then take you back home. This is not an ambulance, but for scheduled visits: tests, examinations, consultations.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Finland has signed an agreement with the European Commission to supply Ukraine with heavy ammunition. The ammunition will be purchased from Finnish suppliers, and the purchases will be financed by proceeds from frozen Russian assets, which will be channeled through the European Peace Facility. The deal is estimated at EUR 90m.
