There have been 65 combat engagements in the frontline since the beginning of the day. Our defenders are stopping the enemy, holding their lines and positions.
During the day, the enemy fired artillery from the territory of the russian Federation near the settlements of Zarichchya and Khrinivka in Chernihiv oblast; Prokhody, Romashkove, Zarichne, Buniakyne, Miropilske, Porozok, Hrabovske, Bachevsk, Novovasylivka in Sumy oblast.
Towards Kharkiv, Ukrainian defenders repelled two aggressor attacks near Vovchansk and towards Mala Shapkivka.
Towards Kupiansk, our troops repelled one enemy attack in the vicinity of Kindrashivka.
Towards Lyman, nine firefights took place near Ridkodub, Hrekivka, Zelena Dolyna in the direction of Novoserhiivka, Olhivka, Novyi Myr and in Serebrianka forest. Three firefights are currently ongoing.
Towards Siversk, the enemy attacked Ukrainian defenders’ positions in the vicinity of Bilohorivka twice.
Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy attacked twice in the area of Chasiv Yar and towards Predtechyne.
Towards Toretsk, the invaders attacked eight times in the areas of Dyliivka, Druzhba and Toretsk. Two combat engagements are ongoing.
The enemy is still highly active towards Pokrovsk. Twenty-seven clashes of varying intensity started today near the localities of Yablunivka, Zoria, Shevchenko Pershe, Nova Poltavka, Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Dachenske, Kotlyne, Novoserhiivka, Udachne, Troitske and Kotliarivka. Five battles are still ongoing.
Towards Novopavlivka, the aggressor tried to advance 10 times in the areas of Bahatyr, Odradne, Shevchenko, Rivne, Novopil and Zelene Pole. One firefight is still ongoing.
Three times the occupants tried to advance to the positions of Ukrainian units in the area of Chervone towards Huliaipole, with one firefight still ongoing. Huliaipole and Vysoke were attacked with unguided aerial missiles.
Towards Orikhiv, enemy aircraft attacked Novoandriivka with multiple rocket launchers.
Ukrainian defenders repelled one attack towards Kursk. The enemy conducted six air strikes, downing 15 UAVs and fired 118 artillery rounds, including four from multiple launch rocket systems.
The enemy did not conduct any active offensives towards Orikhiv and Kherson.
Ukrainian troops are depleting the enemy along the entire frontline and in the rear.
Ukrainian intelligence presented the latest Magura naval drones capable of destroying enemy ships and aircraft for the first time. For the first time, the intelligence services publicly demonstrated a series of Magura maritime strike drones: the famous “killer” of russian Black Sea Fleet ships, Magura V5, the multifunctional Magura V6P platform, the Magura V7 missile carrier drone, which destroyed an enemy combat aircraft for the first time in history, and the Magura V7 model equipped with a combat machine gun module. Over the course of two years of combat use of various modifications of the Magura drone, military intelligence masters hit 17 sea and air targets of the russian aggressor state, 15 of which were completely destroyed: in particular, two enemy Mi-8 helicopters, two Su-30 fighters, large ships of the Black Sea Fleet “Sergiy Kotov”, “Ivanivets”, “Caesar Kunikov” and other vessels. The damage caused to the enemy is estimated at over half a billion dollars.
Oleksii Kuleba, Minister of Communities and Territories Development, reported that more than 100,000 objects damaged or destroyed as a result of russian aggression have been restored in Ukraine. These include residential buildings, hospitals, schools, roads, as well as engineering and port infrastructure. In total, russia has damaged or destroyed more than 350,000 objects.

Kharkiv oblast
Frontline
Over the last day, 164 combat engagements were registered. According to the RMA, towards Kharkiv, the enemy tried to break through the defensive lines of our defenders three times in the area of Vovchansk and in the direction of Stroivka.
Towards Kupiansk a militant attack took place in the vicinity of Nova Kruhliakivka yesterday.
Attacks
At around 4:20pm, a UAV was found fallen near a house in Industrialnyi district of Kharkiv.
Over the past day, Kharkiv city and 6 settlements came under hostile attack.
A 72-year-old, 69-year-old and 55-year-old woman were injured in Kupiansk; a 57-year-old man was wounded in Myrne village of Kindrashivka community; a 58-year-old woman was wounded in Nechvolodivka village; and a 26-year-old woman was wounded in Borova village. In Lukashove village of Vovchansk community, a 62-year-old woman exploded on an unknown explosive device.
The enemy fired a UAV at Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv.
The enemy used various types of weapons in Kharkiv oblast:

Donetsk oblast
Serhii Horbunov, Head of Kostiantynivka CMA, said that in the afternoon of 21 May, russian occupation forces attacked a civilian car with a drone. Two people were injured.
At 4am, russia shelled Kostiantynivka and Sviatohirsk. The consequences of the attacks are being established.

Yesterday russian troops struck the frontline and residential areas 2,686 times.
The explosions took place in 8 localities: the towns of Bilytske, Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Myrnohrad, Sloviansk, and the villages of Illinivka and Nove Shakhove.
Twenty-eight civilian objects were destroyed, including 15 residential buildings.
The russians dropped two KAB-250 bombs on Myrnohrad, injuring a civilian and damaging three apartment buildings, a cafe and an administrative building.
In Bilytske and Nove Shakhove, enemy drones damaged one private house each.
The enemy attacked Kramatorsk with 9 UAVs, causing damage to an industrial area and a service station.
Two drones attacked Sloviansk, damaging 6 private houses and a business. Two more drones hit Mykolaivka, damaging 4 private houses.

Luhansk oblast
The invaders intended to advance near Bilohorivka, but our defenders stopped this enemy attack towards Siversk. According to the Regional Military Administration, the enemy carried out another 30 attacks towards Lyman yesterday. The fighting took place, in particular, near Hrekivka. The invaders used 125 unmanned aerial vehicles there yesterday. They fired seven times from cannon artillery. Another time – from rocket artillery.
The occupiers concealed the forced mobilisation under the opportunity to receive a tax rebate for annual medical check-ups and fulfilment of the standards of the All-russian sports and fitness complex “Ready for work and defence”. The kremlin ordered the relevant work to be accelerated. Including the territory of the so-called “lpr”. In particular, the results were to be counted and accrued not by the end of the year, as planned, but by 1 October. That is, before the start of the autumn conscription.
Residents of Lysychansk complain about the lack of assistance from the russian Federation in rebuilding their homes. The city chose a few of the least damaged high-rise buildings in the centre to demonstrate the work, and they have completed the work over the past three years. Most of them are still waiting. Those who have the money and the ability but do not want to leave are rebuilding their homes on their own, starting with the purchase of plastic windows.
In the occupied territory of Luhansk oblast, there are 102 “youth army” units, where six thousand children are trained. The occupiers have involved 47,000 children and teenagers in the propaganda “movement of the first”. They are trained to handle weapons, operate drones, and are instilled with hatred for Ukraine in every possible way. Former russian military personnel work with them.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that a family from Boryspil region was injured as a result of russian shelling. The mother and two children suffered an acute stress reaction. The father and another son had cut wounds. The necessary medical care was provided, but no hospitalisation was required. The house where the victims were staying was damaged by the debris of the downed target. A non-residential building, a car, warehouses and outbuildings were also affected. Operational services are recording the consequences of the attack.
Kyiv City Military Administration also announced that on May 20 an online seminar “Barrier-Free Hour” was held for employees of Kyiv City Military Administration and district state administrations as part of the National Barrier-Free Week. The seminar was held with the organisational assistance of the League of the Strong NGO as one of the events taking place in Kyiv until 25 May. The aim of the initiative is to create an inclusive environment and improve communication between city authorities and citizens. The Action Plan for 2025-2026 to implement the National Strategy for Creating Barrier-Free Space in Kyiv by 2030 will also be presented.
KRMA also informed about the expansion of the network of inclusive groups in preschool education institutions in Kyiv oblast. According to Zhanna Osypenko, Head of KRMA, 848 inclusive groups have been developed in 321 kindergartens of the oblast. These groups accommodate 2070 preschoolers. This year, 85% of the oblast’s schools have inclusive classes and accommodate more than 3.5 thousand children with special educational needs.
On 20 May, the National University of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine (NUPES) hosted the International Forum “Innovations and Development in Sport in Times of War” in Kyiv. Ruslan Oliinyk, Deputy Head of KRSA, reported on the active development of veteran sports and the creation of infrastructure in Kyiv oblast to rehabilitate, support and treat Ukraine’s defenders with dignity.
Zhytomyr oblast
The press service of Zhytomyr City Council reported that a 21-year-old serviceman, master of sports of Ukraine in modern pentathlon, multiple champion of Ukraine in this sport, Illia Kovalov, was buried in Zhytomyr. The soldier was killed while performing a combat mission in Sumy oblast.
Zhytomyr oblast took part in the annual veterans’ bike ride “Honouring the memory of the Defenders of Ukraine”. The purpose of the ride is to honour the fallen Heroes, promote sports rehabilitation and a healthy lifestyle among the veteran community. A representative of Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, veterans, members of the public and relatives of the fallen joined the event. The participants and visitors laid flowers at the memorial sign “To the Defenders of Ukraine in the War with the russian Aggressor”, honouring the memory of the fallen soldiers.
Representatives of one of the most modern clinics in Ukraine, Feofaniia Hospital, visited Korosten to establish strategic partnership, exchange of experience, access to medical services in all oblasts and joint development. During the meeting, the experts shared their vision of the healthcare system transformation and discussed the prospects for cooperation in the following areas:
- remote and clinical telemedicine consultations;
- training, internships and advanced training of personnel;
- organisation of joint educational events – trainings, courses, master classes;
- rehabilitation of military and civilians;
- development of transplant coordination;
- medical management and implementation of modern approaches to hospital management;
- creation of joint recipient selection programmes;
- organising training for doctors on the issues of brain death.
In Zviahel, work has been planned and started to create a 3km long barrier-free route. For this purpose, 42 crossings with lowered and tactile tiles were converted. Another 17 crossings are planned to be converted in the near future to allow for the unimpeded movement of strollers and wheelchairs.
As part of the Barrier-Free Week, Zhytomyr Regional State Administration reminded about the work of the Action Centre. This centre, Being a space of assistance and communication between the state and citizens, is equipped to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The centre provides 473 administrative services. In 2024, more than 60,000 applications were processed here.
Sumy oblast
Sumy City Military Administration reported that in the morning, russian forces attacked Sumy using drones. One person was reported injured. As a result of the attack, enterprises and other industrial facilities were damaged. Power lines were also hit, leaving part of the city without electricity, including water supply infrastructure. Critical infrastructure was temporarily switched to generators. By the evening, electricity in the city had been restored.

Mykola Noha, Shostka Mayor, informed that on 20 May, russian forces launched a missile strike on Shostka community. The infrastructure of one of the enterprises was damaged. Due to russian shelling, the community has been left without electricity. Emergency rescue operations are underway. A backup power system is being activated for hospitals, water supply, and purification facilities.
According to the National Guard, on 20 May, russian forces launched a missile strike on a military unit’s shooting range in Sumy oblast. Six servicemen were killed, and ten others were wounded. An official investigation into the tragedy is underway. The commander of the military unit has been relieved of duty.
Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that as a result of russian shelling in Sumy oblast over the past day, two people were killed, and five others were injured.
On 20 May, in Yunakivka community, a 33-year-old man was killed in an enemy drone strike. In the same area, preliminary reports indicate that a 59-year-old woman was killed as a result of a guided aerial bomb strike, and her son suffered a concussion.
In Esman community, the previous day, a drone struck a house, injuring a 60-year-old elder of one of the starostas. He is in moderate condition.
In Velyka Pysarivka community, two men — aged 57 and 51 — were injured when a drone struck a site distributing humanitarian aid. Evacuation efforts from Velyka Pysarivka community are ongoing. For those unwilling to leave, humanitarian aid continues to be delivered. The enemy cynically exploited this moment to target civilians.
In Seredyna-Buda community, one person, born in 1992, was injured as a result of a UAV strike.
One person was also injured due to a night-time enemy drone attack in Sumy community.

The Regional Military Administration informed that from the morning of 20 May to the morning of 21 May, russian forces carried out over 120 attacks on 35 settlements across 15 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of strikes was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy actively used guided aerial bombs (10 strikes), multiple launch rocket systems (60 strikes), FPV-drones, and UAV-dropped fragmentation munitions (30 strikes). Additionally, the enemy launched a missile strike and UAV attacks on Sumy oblast.
As a result of russian attacks during this period in Sumy oblast:
- In Khotin community, private buildings were damaged.
- In Sumy community, industrial facilities and power lines were affected.
Over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and civil society organisations from border communities, evacuated 59 people.
Chernihiv oblast
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, reported that on 21 May, russian forces dropped an explosive device from a UAV onto a farm in one of the villages of Semenivka community. As a result, a 28-year-old worker who was employed at the farm was killed. Later, russian artillery struck the outskirts of Semenivka, causing destruction.
Throughout 20 May, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out attacks using mortars (27 strikes), barrel artillery (7 strikes), multiple rocket launchers (12 strikes), a mounted automatic grenade launcher (39 strikes), FPV-drones (14 strikes), an aircraft-type UAV Molniya (1 strike), guided aerial bombs (2 strikes), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (30 strikes).
The North Operational Command informed that as a result of russian attack on 20 May, a private house and an agricultural building were damaged in Tykhonovychi, Snovsk community. Additionally, one private house was damaged in Medvedivka and Ivanivka, Semenivka community, as well as a civilian infrastructure facility in Hremiach, Novhorod-Siverskyi community.
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, said that as part of an experimental project for the comprehensive restoration of settlements, reconstruction is underway in Yahidne village in Chernihiv oblast. Repairs are being carried out on 25 residential buildings damaged during hostilities, and 56 buildings have already been restored.
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, met with Siobhán Foran, an expert in international humanitarian law. The discussion focused on the relevance of projects implemented by the UNHCR in Chernihiv oblast, housing for internally displaced persons, and the possibility of placing modular homes in border communities.
According to Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, on 19 May, Ichnia community signed a memorandum of cooperation with the German city of Grevesmühlen. As part of the partnership, German partners provided furniture for children’s institutions in the community. Currently, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is assisting in the arrangement of shelters in four communities in the oblast, having allocated EUR 250,000.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
In the evening and in the morning, the occupiers attacked the Nikopol region. Marhanets community was attacked with kamikaze drones, and in the morning Nikopol itself was shelled with artillery. The occupiers also attacked Hrushevka community of Kryvyi Rih region with a drone. Infrastructure was damaged.
There were about two dozen attacks. The enemy fired on Nikopol with drones and artillery. A multi-storey building, 4 private houses, 2 outbuildings, 3 cars, a gas pipeline and a power line were damaged. The district centre, Marhanets, Chervonohryhorivka and Pokrov communities were targeted. An apartment building, 2 private houses, an administrative building and a building that was not in use, infrastructure, a gas pipeline and a power line were damaged.
Vinnytsia oblast
Serhii Morhunov, Mayor of Vinnytsia, reported about another help from Vinnytsia to the Azov Brigade. This time we delivered 150 FPV drones. They are more powerful, fly further and can carry a larger charge. Before that, there were thermal imagers, Mavic, and sights.
Kirovohrad oblast
Vitalina Bevzenko, Spokeswoman for the regional police, reported that in Kirovohrad oblast, foresters found a downed attack drone in a bush. Explosive experts found that the munition contained a penetrating high-explosive warhead weighing 50 kilograms, which did not detonate and was severely damaged. It was destroyed by controlled explosion.
Poltava oblast
Soldiers Yurii Onyshchenko from Kremenchuk and Stanislav Karban died. Yurii Onyshchenko died on 10 May 2025 in a military hospital from his injuries. Stanislav Karban, who died while performing a combat mission on 16 May 2025 near the village of Temyrivka, Zaporizhzhia oblast.
In Poltava, a memorial plaque to soldier Artem Negrebetskyi was unveiled on the facade of school No. 4. The soldier was killed in 2022 in a battle near the village of Krasnopillia in Donetsk oblast.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
It is reported that russian forces attacked a Ukrposhta vehicle with an FPV drone in the village of Prymorske. As a result of the attack, two employees were injured and the car was damaged.
Yesterday, 20 May, the occupiers launched 450 strikes on eight settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy launched 15 airstrikes on Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, and Chervone. 267 UAVs of various types targeted Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka. Four MLRS attacks hit Kamianske, Huliaipole, and Novodarivka. There were 164 artillery strikes on Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka. Four reports were received about damage to apartments, private homes, and farm buildings.
On 20 May, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled four russian attacks towards Huliaipole and Orikhiv.
Mykolaiv oblast
In the morning of 21 May, at 6:03am, the enemy carried out an artillery strike on the coastline of Kutsurub community. No casualties were reported.
Yesterday, 20 May, the enemy attacked Kutsurub community twice with FPV drones. Also yesterday, russian forces attacked the waters near the city of Ochakiv with an FPV drone. No casualties were reported.
As of 21 May, 2025, nine cases of careless handling of explosive devices were reported in Mykolaiv oblast. According to the State Emergency Service in Mykolaiv oblast, people were injured or killed in four regions: one case each in Voznesensk and Pervomaisk regions, three in Bashtanka region, and four in Mykolaiv oblast.
Odesa oblast
As of 6am on 19 May, 3 enemy ships were stationed in the Mediterranean Sea, including 1 carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles, with a total salvo capacity of up to 8 missiles.
Over the past day, 9 vessels passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea in russia’s interests, while 7 more ships entered the Sea of Azov.
Kherson oblast
At noon, russian forces shelled Dniprovskyi district of Kherson with artillery. An 86-year-old man was injured in the strike. He suffered a concussion, blast trauma, and a closed head injury.
Around 9am, a man was wounded in Kherson due to a russian drone attack. The 64-year-old resident was diagnosed at the hospital with blast trauma, a concussion, and a head wound.
At 8am, the russian army carried out a drone strike on Bilozerka. Five people were reported injured as a result.
A man who had been injured the previous day in a russian drone strike in Kherson sought medical assistance. The 48-year-old local was diagnosed with blast trauma and a concussion. A woman who was injured yesterday morning in a russian shelling of Korabelnyi district of Kherson also sought medical help. The 51-year-old woman sustained blast trauma.
A resident of Berehove village in Bilozerka community required medical attention after being injured by a mine explosion on 15 May. The 49-year-old man was diagnosed with blast trauma, multiple injuries, and a fractured leg bone. He was hospitalized.
Yesterday, 20 May, the occupiers heavily shelled the right-bank part of Kherson oblast using artillery, mortars, and attack drones. Kherson, Antonivka, Prydniprovske, Sadove, Stanislav, Zymivnyk, Komyshany, Beryslav, Virivka, Dudchany, Novovorontsovka, Zolota Balka, and Novokairy were under attacks. Sixteen objects were damaged: four private homes, seven apartment buildings, a critical infrastructure facility, a village council building, an auto repair shop, a store, and a minibus. Twelve people were injured due to russian aggression.
It is reported that the occupying forces made one unsuccessful attempt to advance towards Kherson. Over the past day, enemy losses amounted to 94 troops, 2 artillery systems, 7 vehicles, 1 Shahed-136 drone, 1 Supercam reconnaissance drone, 1 Groza electronic warfare system, 4 motorcycles, 2 quad bikes, 3 boats, 1 Starlink device and antenna, 1 generator, 10 drone control antennas, 3 communication antennas, and 1 field storage facility. 62 shelters/dugouts and one firing position were destroyed.
Police officers evacuated a wounded man from the frontline town of Beryslav. The 76-year-old man was injured in the leg by a russian drone strike. Police successfully transported him to a medical facility, where he was handed over to doctors for further treatment.
Five more mobile shelters were installed in Kherson. Residents can take cover during enemy attacks there. The protective structures were placed in Korabelnyi and Tsentralnyi districts in areas with the highest concentration of people. Each shelter can hold up to 15 people and is designed to protect against blast waves and shrapnel.

Volyn oblast
During the regular meeting of the regional commission for the perpetuation of the memory of participants in the anti-terrorist operation, victims of war and political repressions, appeals from communities regarding the installation of memorial plaques dedicated to fallen servicemen were considered. The commission unanimously supported all submissions.
Zakarpattia oblast
Tyachiv and Lyman are joining forces for the future within the framework of the Side by Side: United Communities national project. The 1st important step was a study visit by a delegation of Lyman City Military Administration to Tyachiv community.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
The III degree For Courage Order was awarded to Sergeant Tikhiy of the 78th Separate Battalion of the 102nd Separate Brigade of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine named after Colonel Dmytro Vitovsky. His name is not being disclosed for security reasons.

Lviv oblast
The International Organization for Migration held a dialogue session in Lviv on reparations and support for victims of russian aggression. Participants from western and central oblasts of Ukraine highlighted presentations of the results of consultations with victims, raised the topic of the importance of coordination between different levels of representatives of state bodies and public organizations, local authorities, and providers of psychosocial services.
American specialists, together with Ukrainian doctors, have begun surgical interventions as part of the eighth charitable mission at the Children’s Medicine Center. They plan to perform 35 complex surgeries on children with facial skeleton deformities and malformations.
Rivne oblast
The RMA held a meeting with James Onslow, BNE IntelliNews journalist. They discussed the investment potential of Rivne oblast.
Ternopil oblast
A department that meets world standards of technological sophistication and inclusiveness and has no analogues in the oblast has been opened at Ternopil Regional Clinical Hospital. It is a 20-bed inpatient unit and 3 rehabilitation rooms in a modular building. The cost of the work is UAH 9m.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
The RMA held a meeting with Ralf Grotenhoff, project manager of the Strengthening Urban Resilience project, GIZ UA (Germany) and the project team. They discussed prospects for installing new cogeneration units in the community as part of the project. They signed a Memorandum and are starting the project implementation.
Chernivtsi oblast
The newly formed 8th Corps of the Airborne Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received an ambulance from the RMA and benefactors. The vehicle is equipped with all the necessary equipment and will help the corps’ medics save the lives of soldiers.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Polish presidency of the Council of the EU, announced that EU countries have officially agreed to create the SAFE instrument, which will allow borrowing up to EUR 150bn for investments in the defense industry of member states.
Pope Leo XIV confirmed his willingness to hold negotiations between Ukraine and the russian federation in the Vatican.
