On 23 July, the aggressor attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 53 times.
Artillery shelling of border areas continues. In Sumy oblast, the settlements of Korenok, Bachivsk, Yastrubshchyna, Tovstodubove, Buvalyne, Ulanove, and Bezsalivka were affected.
Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, there were no attempts by the enemy to advance; however, the occupiers launched three airstrikes using nine guided aerial bombs and carried out 50 shelling attacks on positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the invaders made seven attempts to break through the defense in the vicinity of Vovchansk, Khatnye, Yurchenkove, Vilcha, Lyman, and Starytsia; one engagement is ongoing.
Towards Lyman, the enemy made six attempts to advance in the vicinity of Novoselivka, Stavky, Lyman, and Ozerne; one engagement is ongoing.
Towards Sloviansk, the occupiers made fourteen attempts to push Ukrainian units out of their positions in the vicinity of Kryva Luka, Zakitne, Rai-Oleksandrivka, and Riznykivka; two engagements are ongoing.
Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders successfully repelled three enemy attacks in the vicinity of Pryvilne, Nykyforivka, and Markove.
Towards Kostiantynivka, the invaders made six attempts to break through the defense in the vicinity of Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, and Mykolaipillia; one engagement is ongoing.
Towards Pokrovsk, there were seventeen attempts by the occupiers to push Ukrainian warriors out of their positions in the vicinity of Shevchenko, Nykanorivka, Novyi Donbas, Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Hryshyne, Myrne, and Udachne.
Towards Oleksandrivka, Ukrainian warriors successfully repelled two attacks in the vicinity of Kalynivske and Rybne.
Towards Huliaipole, the enemy attacked five times in the vicinity of Vozdvizhivka, Dobropillia, Tsvitkove, and Staroukrainka; two engagements are ongoing.
Towards Orikhiv, Ukrainian defenders stopped two attempts by the enemy to advance in the vicinity of Shcherbaky and Stepove.
Towards Kupiansk and Kherson, there were no attempts by the enemy to advance. There are currently no significant changes in the situation in other directions either.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
Front
23 July
Over the past 24 hours, 261 combat engagements were recorded along the front line. In the South Slobozhanskyi direction, Russian forces launched 11 attacks on the positions of the Ukrainian Defense Forces near Fyholivka and toward Ternova, Prylipka, Hrafske, Kutkivka, and Malyi Burluk. In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy carried out one attack toward Kupiansk.
22 July
As of 16:00, Russian forces had attempted seven times to break through Ukrainian defenses near Vovchansk, Khatnie, Yurchenkove, Vilcha, Lyman, and Starytsia. One engagement was still ongoing.
Ukrainian military officials also report daily attempts by Russian sabotage and assault groups to infiltrate Kupiansk in small groups.
Shelling
23 July
At approximately 03:00, Russian forces launched a missile strike on Zolochiv. An educational institution, 12 private houses, a café, and energy and internet infrastructure were damaged. No casualties were reported.
A Russian drone struck a private household in Zolochiv. A 66-year-old woman and a 16-year-old child suffered acute stress reactions and received medical assistance at the scene. A vehicle was also damaged.
At approximately 16:15, a Molniya drone struck Zolochiv. A 92-year-old man was injured.
According to the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, over the past 24 hours Russian forces attacked Kharkiv and 15 other settlements across the region. One person was killed and 11 others were injured.
In Kharkiv, six people suffered acute stress reactions following strikes on the Nemyshlianskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts.
In Zolochiv, a 57-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl were injured. In Staryi Saltiv, a 52-year-old woman was injured, while another 30-year-old woman suffered an acute stress reaction. In Izium, a 63-year-old man experienced an acute stress reaction. In Yurchenkove, a 60-year-old woman was killed.
Separately, authorities reported that two men, aged 23 and 25, were killed in Zlatopil after an explosive device detonated. According to the police, the grenade exploded due to careless handling after it had been passed to them concealed in clothing.
Donetsk oblast
Front
Over the past 24 hours
In the Pokrovsk direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 42 Russian assaults, up from 26 attacks the previous day. Fighting took place near Sofiivka, Toretske, Shakhove, Nykanorivka, Hryshyne, Vasylivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, and Filiia, as well as toward Vilne, Kucheriv Yar, Nove Shakhove, Bilytske, Novyi Donbas, Myrne, Svitle, Shevchenko, and Serhiivka.
Russian forces also launched 25 attacks each in the Sloviansk and Kostiantynivka directions.
Today
The Pokrovsk direction remains one of the most difficult sectors of the front. Russian forces continue intensive assaults using attack drones, aviation, and large infantry formations. According to National Guard of Ukraine Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko, in some areas the force ratio reaches one to six in the enemy’s favor.
In the Sloviansk–Kramatorsk direction, the Russian army is increasing the number of assaults and deploying additional reserves, including artillery personnel and drone pilots. At the same time, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are employing Hornet strike drones, capable of destroying enemy equipment, vehicles, and electronic warfare systems at distances of more than 100 kilometers behind enemy lines.
In the Donetsk region, operators of the Phoenix Border Guard unit destroyed a Russian Buk-M3 surface-to-air missile system while it was being transported toward the front line.
Shelling
Today
At approximately 15:30, Russian forces dropped a FAB-250 guided aerial bomb equipped with a planning and correction module on a residential area of Sloviansk.
The number of injured has risen to 15. The victims, aged 28 to 82, sustained blast injuries, shrapnel wounds, fractures, and contusions.
The strike sparked three separate fires covering a total area of approximately 630 square meters. Balconies of two five-story apartment buildings and several garages caught fire. Firefighters extinguished part of the fires and contained another.
Over the past 24 hours
According to the police, on 22 July Russian forces carried out 1,129 strikes targeting the front line and residential areas of the Donetsk region. Nine settlements came under fire. Five civilians were injured, and 21 civilian objects, including 15 residential buildings, were damaged.
Russian forces attacked Druzhkivka with three KAB-250 guided bombs and drones. Two people were injured, and a nine-story apartment building was destroyed.
Sloviansk was struck by four guided aerial bombs. Two people were injured, while six private houses and an educational institution were damaged.
In Raihorodok, one person was injured and two private houses were damaged. One civilian vehicle was damaged in both Kramatorsk and Starovarvarivka. In Bilenke, five private houses were damaged; in Malotaranivka, one private home was damaged; and in Ocheretyne, a private enterprise sustained damage.
Other
Due to the security situation, the collection and removal of household waste has been suspended since 21 July on parts of the streets in Malotaranivka, Krasnotorka, and Bilenke within the Kramatorsk community.
Luhansk oblast
Combat Operations
Russian forces shelled Ukrainian positions in the Luhansk region 33 times. The enemy carried out 11 mortar attacks, two strikes each with barrel artillery and automatic grenade launchers, 10 explosive drops from drones, and eight FPV drone attacks.
In the Lyman direction, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 15 attempts by Russian troops to break through Ukrainian defenses.
Occupation
In the temporarily occupied Luhansk region, the operation of emergency medical services is deteriorating. Due to a shortage of ambulances and problems with dispatch services, residents are unable to receive timely medical assistance. In one case, a woman suffering a severe heart attack was unable to receive help for an entire day because dispatchers did not answer emergency calls.
Over the past 24 hours, 24 landscape fires were recorded in the occupied Luhansk region, covering more than 124 hectares. The largest area burned near Perevalsk, where approximately 90 hectares were affected. Additional fires were reported in Rovenky and the Shchastia district.
Despite statements from the occupation authorities, the area affected by the fires continues to grow.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, UNESCO has retained three sites in Ukraine on the List of World Heritage Sites in Danger, recognising the imminent threat posed by russian aggression. These are ‘St Sophia’s Cathedral, the adjacent monastic buildings and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’, ‘the Historic Centre of Lviv’ and ‘the Historic Centre of Odesa’. During its 48th session, taking place in Busan, South Korea, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee took note of updated information from Ukraine regarding damage caused by recent russian missile and drone attacks, as well as the findings of reactive monitoring missions carried out by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and ICOMOS.
On 22 July, the US Ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker, and the Commander of the NATO Special Mission for Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine, Lieutenant General Curtis Bazzard, arrived in Kyiv. The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, awarded Curtis Bazzard the Order of Merit, 3rd Class.
On 23 July in Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, during which the Irish Prime Minister announced a new support package worth 125 million euros. Earlier, the leaders walked along the Wall of Remembrance near St Michael’s Cathedral and paid tribute to the fallen defenders of Ukraine.
Zhytomyr oblast
According to the Regional State Administration, In Zhytomyr oblast, a further six veterans and members of their families are set to receive nearly 3 million hryvnias in grant funding to support business development. The winners were selected as part of the 12th round of the veterans’ component of the government’s ‘Own Business’ programme. The winners include five combat veterans and one veteran’s wife. The average grant amount is 498,000 hryvnias.
Sumy oblast
The Gas Distribution Networks company reported that on 23 July, russian forces attacked Bilopillia gas distribution office by drones. Staff were sheltering at the time and were unharmed. It was the seventh attack on the gas company’s administrative building.
Sumy City Military Administration informed that on 23 July, a russian UAV struck a school building and a petrol station in Kovpakivskyi district of Sumy. The fire was extinguished. No people were killed or injured. On 22 July, the enemy also attacked a petrol station in Zarichnyi district of Sumy.
Nataliia Kalinichenko, Editor-in-Chief of Bilopilshchyna newspaper, said that russian forces struck Bilopillia during the day on 23 July. The newspaper’s editorial office was damaged in the attack.
According to Yurii Kolomiiets, Starosta of Semenivka, on 22 July, russians attacked Semenivka in Hlukhiv community by jet-powered drones. Two explosions were recorded. The local church building was destroyed in the attack.
The Regional Military Administration reported that a 57-year-old man was killed in a mortar attack on the central part of Seredyno-Budska community on 22 July. He was in the courtyard of his home when the shelling occurred and sustained critical injuries.
The Regional Military Administration also informed that on 22 July, a russian drone attacked a 44-year-old civilian man who was riding a bicycle between settlements in Velyka Pysarivka community. He was evacuated to hospital with multiple injuries and remains in a serious condition.
According to the Regional Military Administration, between the morning of 22 July and the morning of 23 July, russian forces carried out nearly 70 attacks on 28 settlements across 15 territorial communities in Sumy oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts were in effect across the oblast for 23 hours and 22 minutes during the day.
According to the RMA, as of the morning of 23 July, one person was killed and five civilians were injured in russian attacks across Sumy oblast over the past 24 hours. The following damage was also recorded:
- In Seredyno-Buda community, a 57-year-old man was killed in a mortar attack. One private residential house was destroyed and another was damaged.
- In Bilopillia community, a 53-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were injured in a UAV strike. One private residential house was destroyed. Apartment buildings, private residential houses, a shop building, non-residential premises and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged.
- In Velyka Pysarivka community, a 44-year-old man was injured in a russian drone strike. A private residential house was damaged.
- In Sumy community, two men were injured in a UAV strike. Civilian infrastructure facilities, non-residential premises and outbuildings were damaged.
- In Svesa community, the community culture and leisure centre building was damaged.
- In Mykolaivka rural community, a private residential house and outbuildings were damaged.
- In Shostka community, civilian infrastructure facilities and a private residential house were damaged.
- In Nova Sloboda community, a vehicle was damaged.
- In Krasnopillia community, a private residential house was damaged.
- In Shalyhyne community, a private residential house was damaged.
- In Hlukhiv community, a private residential house was damaged.
A 51-year-old man sought medical treatment after being injured in a russian drone strike on Sad community on 19 July. Residential houses, outbuildings and other property previously damaged by shelling were also recorded in Seredyno-Buda, Hlukhiv, Esman, Yampil, Znob-Novhorodske and Khutir-Mykhailivskyi communities.
Over the past 24 hours, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police and non-governmental organisations, evacuated five people from border communities.
Serhii Kryvosheienko, Head of Sumy City Military Administration, said that 52 apartment buildings damaged in russian attacks require restoration in Sumy. As of 1 July, the estimated cost of all necessary works exceeds UAH 236m. Restoration work is already underway at 26 sites. Given the growing scale of damage across all areas of the municipal infrastructure, the city’s budget lacks sufficient funds, and Sumy is relying on support from the state and charitable organisations.
Chernihiv oblast
The National Police Department of Chernihiv oblast reported that at around midnight on 23 July, russian forces struck the premises of a dairy processing enterprise in Koriukivka region by a UAV. The building was damaged in the attack.
Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that at around 7:45pm on 22 July, the enemy attacked Semenivka by a Herbera UAV. The drone struck the grounds of a private household, causing a fire.
Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, informed that over the past 24 hours, russians used Herbera UAVs to attack energy facilities in two border communities. In a village in Nizhyn region, a UAV strike set fire to a 23-hectare rye field. The fire was extinguished.
According to Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment, on 22 July, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka, Snovsk and Horodnia. The enemy carried out mortar attacks (4 explosions), tube artillery strikes (3 explosions), Gerbera UAV attacks (2 explosions), FPV drone attacks (5 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (5 explosions). A total of seven settlements came under enemy fire.
The Security Service of Ukraine reported that its counterintelligence officers and investigators had documented six new cases of russia’s use of munitions containing depleted uranium against Ukraine. Such components were identified in Heran-2 strike drones used by russian forces to attack Chernihiv oblast between April and June 2026. According to the investigation, russia is using radioactive elements in R-60M missiles that it has adapted for use on its UAVs.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk RMA, reported that a barley field caught fire in Solone community as a result of a UAV strike. The occupiers attacked Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovske rural, Marhanets and Tomakivka communities by MLRS and drones. A private house and an unused building caught fire. An apartment building, a shop, a filling station and 3 trucks were damaged. An FPV drone attack damaged a house and a vehicle in Zelenodolsk community. A private house was damaged in Petropavlivka community.
2 people were injured. The occupiers attacked the region by drones and artillery. They targeted the regional centre, Chervonohryhorivka, Pokrovske rural, Marhanets and Myrove communities. Fires broke out. 2 apartment buildings, 2 shops, a fire station, an agricultural enterprise, an outbuilding, 3 garages, a minibus, 2 vehicles and infrastructure were damaged. A UAV attack caused a filling station to catch fire in Petropavlivka community. Pokrovske community was struck by KAB. A fire broke out. A private house was damaged. An outbuilding was destroyed. 3 people were killed in Pavlohrad as a result of KAB strikes. 29 people were injured, including a 2-year-old girl.
Fires broke out. An enterprise was damaged. The enemy attacked Hrushivka community by FPV drones. They targeted vehicles. 2 vehicles were damaged. 1 person was injured.
Poltava oblast
According to Poltava RMA, in Kremenchuk region, the fall of debris from an enemy UAV caused dry vegetation to catch fire in an open area. In Poltava oblast, drone debris was found on the territory of a private household and in an open area.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA, stated that air defence forces shot down 3 russian UAVs over Cherkasy oblast. In Zolotonosha region, falling debris caused dry vegetation to catch fire. A power line was damaged.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that today, 18 people were injured as a result of a russian KAB strike on Zaporizhzhia. Residential neighbourhoods and an industrial zone were damaged.
The City Council reported that 23 apartment buildings and 10 non-residential premises were damaged in Voznesenivsk region as a result of the russian KAB strike on Zaporizhzhia.
Based on the information provided by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 22 July, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 18 russian attacks in Huliaipole and Orikhiv region. The russian forces assaulted in the directions of Vozdvyzhivka, Dobropillia, Staroukrainka, Hirke, Tsvitkove, Charivne and near Mala Tokmachka, Mali Shcherbaky, Shcherbaky and Pavlivka.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 22 July, 2 people were killed and 7 injured as a result of russian strikes on Zaporizhzhia and Zaporizhzhia oblast. In total, over the past day, the russian military launched 913 strikes on 52 settlements across the oblast. UAVs of various types, primarily FPV drones, were used most extensively, with more than 678 attacks.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to Mykolaiv RMA, a private house was damaged as a result of a russian attack. The russian military attacked a community in Mykolaiv oblast by a Molniia UAV. Falling debris damaged a private house. There were no casualties or injuries reported.
On 22 July, russian forces struck Mykolaiv oblast, reportedly by a ballistic missile. There were no injuries reported. Ochakiv community was attacked 4 times by FPV drones.
Odesa oblast
Relying on the information provided by the City Military Administration, as a result of the overnight russian attack in Odesa, infrastructure, several vehicles, office premises and the windows of private houses were damaged. There were no injuries or fatalities reported.
Oleh Kiper, Head of Odesa RMA, informed that over the past week, 30 people were killed in Odesa oblast as a result of russian shelling. Another 80 residents of the oblast were injured.
Kherson oblast
According to Kherson RMA, at around 5:20pm, russian occupiers attacked a man by a UAV in Korabelnyi district of Kherson. The 51-year-old resident sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his abdomen.
At approximately 2:50pm, russian occupiers attacked Korabelnyi district of Kherson by a UAV. 3 people came under the attack near a supermarket. A 47-year-old man and a 67-year-old woman sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to their arms. A 30-year-old resident was diagnosed by a concussion, a shrapnel wound to the eye, blast injuries and a closed traumatic brain injury.
At approximately 2:30pm, russian occupiers attacked a vehicle by a drone in the central part of Kherson. 2 women aged 62 and 42 sustained blast injuries, concussions and acute stress reactions. A 56-year-old man sought medical assistance.
At around 1:30pm, russian forces attacked a man by a UAV in Korabelnyi district of Kherson. The 47-year-old resident was taken to hospital with blast injuries, an open fracture of the lower leg and shrapnel wounds to his arms and legs.
This morning, russian occupiers attacked Kherson from the air. In less than half an hour, the enemy dropped 10 KABs on the city centre and Korabel neighbourhood. In the central part of Kherson, the strike hit a residential area, by heavy KABs falling directly on the private housing sector and the grounds of an educational institution. The educational institution sustained severe damage. Private houses and apartment buildings were damaged, with some homes suffering significant destruction. 7 people were injured. A 52-year-old man who was riding a bicycle sustained blast injuries, a concussion and an acute stress reaction. A 62-year-old woman and a 59-year-old man were taken to hospital. An 83-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to their limbs. A 56-year-old resident was diagnosed with blast injuries and a concussion.
At approximately 10:30am, russian occupiers launched an airstrike on the central part of Kherson. A 69-year-old man who was standing on his balcony was injured. He sustained a leg injury, a concussion, blast injuries and a closed traumatic brain injury.
At around noon in Molodizhne, russian occupiers attacked a vehicle by a UAV. As a result of the strike, a 67-year-old man sustained blast injuries and multiple shrapnel wounds to his legs and body. A 62-year-old woman sought hospital treatment after sustaining blast injuries and a concussion.
Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
Volyn oblast
An open class on tactical medicine and pre-combat training will be held in Novovolynsk. The training for all interested parties is organized by servicemen of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade together with fighters of the Century public movement.
Zakarpattia oblast
For the 1st time, a separate competition is being held in the oblast for projects of public and charitable organizations of veteran orientation, which may receive funding from the regional budget in 2026. Within the framework of the regional program Protection, UAH 4m has been allocated for the implementation of initiatives. The maximum amount of funding for one project is UAH 200,000.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
Ivano-Frankivsk community has donated a special mannequin to the Separate Anti-tank Battalion of the 3rd Army Corps. On this simulator, medics will train soldiers to provide first aid and save the lives of their comrades.
Lviv oblast
24 ambassadors of OSCE participating states, who represent their countries in Vienna, have arrived in Lviv. The delegation is headed by Switzerland, which currently holds the chairmanship of the OSCE Permanent Council. These are diplomats who participate in the formation of the Organization’s decisions.
Rivne oblast
Meetings with families of missing Defenders continue in Rivne oblast. The purpose of meetings is the proper implementation of veterans’ policy in the region. Since the beginning of the year, over 30 such visits have been held.
Ternopil oblast
Ternopil City Council reported that in the 1st half of 2026, 1,420 family members of the fallen, deceased and missing Defenders of Ukraine were provided with targeted assistance for housing and communal services – over UAH 3m.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council has approved a procedure for those who have special merits before the homeland, according to which they have the right to receive compensation for fuel.
Chernivtsi oblast
Bodies of 2 fallen defenders, who were previously buried as unidentified, were exhumed at the Sadhirskyi cemetery in Chernivtsi. russia returned the bodies of fighters to Ukraine as part of repatriation measures and law enforcement officers have been working to establish their identities since the beginning of 2025. One of the identified soldiers is from Kolomiia region of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, the other is from Dnipropetrovsk oblast. Now they will be handed over to their relatives.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Matthew Whitaker, US Ambassador to NATO. The meeting focused on results of the NATO summit in Ankara, including important decisions to protect Ukrainian skies and their implementation. First of all, it concerns agreements on licenses for the production of missiles for Patriot systems.
