War in Ukraine today: latest news, 21 April 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1518  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

Since the start of the day, the aggressor has carried out 91 attacks.

The aggressor is shelling border areas. Today, the following settlements in Sumy oblast were hit: Korenok, Bachivsk, Rohizne, Atynske, Iskryskivshchyna, Volfyne, Seredyna-Buda; and Mykolaivka in Chernihiv oblast. Yastrubshchyna and Pavlivka were subjected to air strikes.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, the enemy carried out one air strike using one guided bomb, and conducted 50 shelling attacks on settlements and our troops’ positions, three of which involved the use of multiple launch rocket systems.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy made one attempt to improve its position in Prylipka area.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy carried out one assault operation in Kurylivka.

Towards Lyman, Ukrainian troops repelled seven attempts by the invaders to advance towards the settlements of Stavka, Drobysheve, Lyman and Dibrova.

Towards Sloviansk, the enemy twice attempted to advance towards Riznykivka and Rai-Oleksandrivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, the occupiers launched six attacks towards Nykyforivka, Holubivka, Bondarne, Maiske and Vasiutynske. One of these attacks is ongoing.

Towards Kostiantynivka, the invaders carried out 21 attacks near the settlements of Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Ivanopillia, Illinivka, Yablunivka, Sofiivka, Novopavlivka and Kucheriv Yar.

Towards Pokrovsk, since the start of the day, the occupiers have attempted 30 times to dislodge our troops from their positions towards the settlements of Bilytske, Nikonorivka, Rodynske, Shevchenko, Pokrovsk, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novomykolaivka, Muravka, Molodetske, Novopidhorodne and Novopavlivka. Four of these attempts are still ongoing.

Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy launched nine attacks towards the settlements of Oleksandrohrad, Kalynivske and Zlahoda. Two of these attacks are still ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, nine attacks were carried out against our defenders’ positions in the areas of Zaliznychne, Sviatopetrivka, Staroukrainka and Huliaipole. Verkhnia Tersa, Vozdvizhivka, Polohy, Kopani, Sviatopetrivka, Dolynka, Lisne, Huliaipilske, Novoselivka and Charivne were subjected to air strikes.

Towards Orikhiv, the enemy carried out five assaults towards Shcherbakiv, Plavni and Stepnohirsk. Two of these are still ongoing.

Towards Kherson, the enemy did not carry out any assaults.

In other sectors, there are currently no significant changes in the situation. No attempts by the enemy to advance have been recorded.

Ukrainian troops are wearing down the enemy along the entire line of contact and in the rear.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that he has signed decrees imposing sanctions against over 120 russian commanders involved in missile strikes on Ukraine. 9 religious figures, who publicly justify russia’s aggression, have also been added to the sanctions list.

Roads are being built and artillery positions established on the Belarusian border with Ukraine. According to the authorities, russia will again attempt to drag Belarus into the war against Ukraine. The President has instructed that a warning be conveyed to the Belarusian leadership.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

As of 4pm, the General Staff reports that towards Southern Sloboda, russian forces made one attempt to improve their position in Prylipka, whilst towards Kupiansk, one assault attempt was recorded near Kurylivka.

Over the past 24 hours, 174 combat engagements were recorded. Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy launched five attacks in Vovchansk, Starytsia, Vovchanski Khutory and Vilcha. Towards Kupiansk, russian troops carried out 17 attacks in the directions of Kupiansk, Petropavlivka, Kolisnykivka, Nova Kruhliakivka, Kivsharivka and Novoosynove.

Towards Kupiansk, around 10 active russian call signs have been recorded. According to spokesman Viktor Tregubov of the Operational-Tactical Military Group, russia is attempting to seize the initiative, particularly from the northern sector, but is suffering losses. The occupiers’ main objective is to reduce the Ukrainian foothold east of the Oskil River. An increase in activity is also being noted along almost the entire front line in Kharkiv oblast.

Russian troops have again attacked Bohodukhiv. A 46-year-old woman was wounded in a drone strike, whilst an 18-year-old and an 83-year-old woman suffered acute stress reactions. Following a second strike at around 2:30pm, two more women sustained shrapnel wounds and were hospitalised. At least two private houses and a farm building were damaged.

An FPV drone struck an emergency medical services vehicle near Hontarivka in Staryi Saltiv community, the windscreen was damaged, but the medics were unharmed.

Despite statements by the russian Ministry of Defence on 17 April regarding the capture of the village of Zybyne in Vovchansk community, the Ukrainian military confirms that the occupiers have not established control over the settlement.

Zolochiv community was under at least six attacks over the past 24 hours. Strikes were recorded from KABs, Italmas and Molniya UAVs, and FPV drones. A shopping pavilion, the local council and Ukrposhta offices, vehicles, a liquefied gas tank and an agricultural enterprise building were damaged or destroyed.

Over the past 24 hours, Kharkiv and 13 settlements in the oblast were under attack. 12 people were injured as a result of the shelling: 9 in Kharkiv (including a 17-year-old girl) and 3 men in Bohodukhiv. Medical staff also treated a 51-year-old man wounded on 19 April in Izium.

Russia deployed 8 Geran-2 UAVs, 16 Molniya UAVs, 7 FPV drones and 29 unmanned aerial vehicles of an unidentified type. Attacks were recorded in Osnovianskyi, Kholodnohirskyi and Shevchenkivskyi districts of Kharkiv.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged: in Kharkiv — 3 apartment blocks, 14 private houses, a car, an administrative building and power lines. In Bohodukhiv region — 2 private houses, a petrol station, 2 cars, a boarding school, a greenhouse, a shop, farms and businesses. In Kupiansk, Kharkiv and Chuhuiv regions, homes, cars, a nursery and medical transport were damaged.

The transit evacuation centre in Lozova received 210 people over the past 24 hours. Since the centre began operating, 29,409 people have been registered.

Donetsk oblast

Towards Pokrovsk, russian forces launched attacks across the entire front line, from Nove Shakhove to Filiia, and the Defence Forces repelled 30 assaults. Towards Kostiantynivka, 19 attacks were repelled. Towards Sloviansk, two attempts to advance were thwarted. Towards Kramatorsk, one assault was repelled. Towards Lyman, the occupiers have intensified air strikes, using guided bombs against both Ukrainian military positions and populated areas; air sorties are recorded several times a day. The situation in Hryshyne is escalating as russian troops are attempting to bypass the village and establish a foothold in the centre, whilst in the south of Pokrovsk they are building up their equipment and personnel.

A series of strikes has been recorded in Sloviansk: during the night and in the morning, russian troops used aerial bombs twice (at 11:20pm and 5:50am), injuring three people. Later, at 1:50pm, the city came under fire again and five civilians were wounded (two women aged 59 and 61, and three men aged 38 and 46; the age of one is being verified). The strikes destroyed an educational establishment and damaged 18 high-rise buildings, 3 private houses, 3 shops, a pharmacy, a beauty salon and a notary’s office. In total, over the past 24 hours, the police recorded 1,354 russian strikes on Donetsk oblast: 8 settlements came under fire, and 30 civilian facilities were damaged, including 14 residential buildings.

In Kramatorsk, a UAV damaged a piece of infrastructure; in Druzhkivka, it damaged a private house and an outbuilding. Mykolaivka came under four attacks, resulting in damage to eight apartment blocks, two administrative buildings, a market, a sports complex, an educational establishment, a community centre, a hotel and a business. In Raihorodok and Torske, one house was damaged in each town, and in Pryvillia, a civilian car was damaged.

From Druzhkivka, the White Angel evacuation unit transported a family with a child and also picked up four more people who were walking from Kostiantynivka, including a 79-year-old woman with limited mobility. The evacuation took place under the threat of drone attacks, with drones circling over the town and the roads.

Luhansk oblast

Ukrainian defenders repelled two attempts by russian forces to advance from the direction of Karmazynivka towards Lyman. The enemy concentrated its main efforts on this particular section, deploying mortars, automatic grenade launchers, as well as 11 unmanned aerial vehicles and FPV drones.

In the temporarily occupied Luhansk oblast, the russians are increasingly using the unpaid labour of civilians: so-called “people’s guards” are being recruited to patrol the streets and guard facilities, including sports grounds, in the evenings.

Schools in the so-called “lpr” plan to introduce compulsory assessment of pupils’ behaviour. From the new academic year, the system will be rolled out across the board, and from 1 September 2027, it will become a three-tier system and will affect overall academic performance. According to the occupying authorities’ plan, this is intended to increase the involvement of children in propaganda activities.

An organisational crisis persists in the occupied region: medical and social commissions are unable to keep up with the processing of disability documents, and in Siverskodonetsk there is only one notary, with appointments booked up for more than four months.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Kyiv Regional Military Administration, reconstruction is underway in Borodianka on the building of the Inclusive Resource Centre, a municipal institution that was damaged in 2022 as a result of the russian Federation’s armed aggression. The restoration of the facility is an important step on the way to ensuring that children with special educational needs have access to high-quality services within the community.

Mykola Kalashnyk, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that 13 projects in Kyiv oblast are being funded by the European Investment Bank. The Motyzhyn Lyceum has already been put into operation this year, and a further six facilities are scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Key initiatives include the reconstruction and major refurbishment of educational establishments in the communities of Hostomel, Makariv, Kopyliv, Baryshivka and Kalyta, the construction of a new nursery in Hostomel, an administrative building in Byshiv, the refurbishment of a children’s rehabilitation centre and the upgrading of medical infrastructure.

In Kyiv, the Wild Race was held in Partisan Glory Park in support of the Ukrainian military. Participants covered a 5km course featuring 21 obstacles – ranging from rope climbs to challenging terrain. The race format combines cross-country running, strength tests and teamwork. The competition was attended by military personnel, veterans, volunteers and civilians. Teams represented all branches of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Zhytomyr oblast

On 20 April 2026, the people of Zhytomyr paid last respects to Mykola Polianovskyi, a Ukrainian musician, lecturer at the Viktor Kosenko Zhytomyr College of Music and three music schools, and founder of the international festival “Sunny Clarinets”. The “Maestro” died on 2 August 2024 whilst carrying out a combat mission in the Pokrovsk area. In his final battle, he saved his comrades.

Sumy oblast

During the night of 21 April, russian forces attacked Sumy by UAVs. As a result of the strikes, 15 people were injured, including three children. Up to 10 explosions were recorded. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, six multi-apartment buildings were damaged, an educational institution building was destroyed, and at least 10 vehicles were destroyed. An athletics arena was also damaged, and windows in nearby buildings were shattered.

Serhii Kryvosheienko, Head of Sumy City Military Administration, said that as a result of russian shelling of the regional centre, 12 multi-apartment buildings, 14 private houses, and more than 30 vehicles were damaged, along with over 1,000 windows and balcony frames.

One of the strikes hit an outpatient clinic in Sumy. The trauma unit was damaged, and four windows in the clinic building were shattered. No injuries were reported at the medical facility. It is currently operating as usual and providing assistance to people affected by the russian attack.

At around 1:30am on 21 April, russian forces struck Hlukhiv in Shostka region. As a result of the attack, a 51-year-old man and a 19-year-old girl were injured. According to Andrii Bieliaiev, Head of Shostka District Military Administration, three private houses were destroyed in Hlukhiv and more than 20 were damaged. Two vehicles were also destroyed.

Sumy Regional Police informed that during the night of 21 April, russian forces struck a police vehicle in Bilopillia by an FPV drone. Police officers were not injured.

As a result of russian shelling across the oblast over the past day, as of the morning of 21 April, 22 people were injured:

  • in Putyvl community, four women were injured following a drone strike;
  • in Mykolaivka rural community, a 76-year-old man was injured in a UAV attack;
  • in Sumy community, 15 people were reported injured — three children and 12 adults — following a UAV strike;
  • in Hlukhiv community, a 19-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man were injured due to a drone attack.

The Regional Military Administration reported that over the past day, from the morning of 20 April to the morning of 21 April, russian forces carried out more than 90 attacks on 30 settlements across 16 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, MLRS, FPV drones, UAVs, and guided aerial bombs. Air raid alerts in the oblast lasted for 19 hours and 47 minutes over the day.

Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:

  • in Shostka community, multi-apartment residential buildings, an outbuilding, a vehicle, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Seredyna-Buda community, a residential building and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
  • in Esman community, private residential houses and outbuildings were destroyed;
  • in Hlukhiv community, a multi-apartment building, private houses, and vehicles were damaged;
  • in Berezivka community, a private residential house, an outbuilding, and a vehicle were damaged;
  • in Shalyhyne community, a private residential house was damaged;
  • in Putyvl community, a multi-apartment building, a civilian infrastructure facility, and private passenger vehicles were damaged;
  • in Sumy community, civilian infrastructure facilities, educational and medical institutions, multi-apartment buildings, non-residential premises, and private vehicles were damaged;
  • in Bilopillia community, a private residential house was damaged;
  • in Novoslobidska community, a private residential house was destroyed;
  • in Vorozhba community, a multi-apartment residential building was damaged.

Over the past day, 77 people were evacuated from border areas by local authorities in cooperation with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police, and volunteer organisations.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihivoblenerho JSC reported that in Nizhyn region, an energy facility was damaged, leaving 54,000 subscribers without electricity in Nizhyn city and the surrounding district. Energy workers are working to restore power supply.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that on 21 April, russian forces attacked an agricultural enterprise in Avdiivka village, Ponornytsia community, by five strike UAVs. Agricultural buildings and equipment were damaged, and a fire broke out.

At around midnight on 21 April, russian forces attacked Pokoshychi village in Ponornytsia community by a UAV. As a result of the strike, private houses were damaged.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, informed that the number of people injured in the russian UAV attack on Pryluky in Chernihiv oblast on 20 April has risen to two — a 57-year-old civilian man and a 24-year-old woman. They are currently receiving outpatient treatment. The attack damaged administrative buildings, including the regional police department and a library, as well as business premises, residential buildings, and around 50 vehicles.

On 20 April, russian forces struck a transport infrastructure facility in Koriukivka region. In one of the villages, a house caught fire as a result of the attack.

In Novhorod-Siverskyi region, a russian UAV struck a food industry enterprise, damaging a water tower. In another village, residential houses were targeted.

In Semenivka community, administrative buildings were damaged. The enemy also struck a communications facility.

According to the Regional Military Administration, a 46-year-old resident of a border village in Snovsk community sought medical assistance after being injured over the weekend when an FPV drone exploded in his yard.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment reported that over the course of 20 April, russian forces attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling using mortars (16 explosions) and tube artillery (15 explosions), conducted UAV strikes of the Molniya type (4 explosions), carried out FPV drone strikes (16 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (1 explosion). Thirteen settlements came under enemy fire.

The National Union of Journalists of Ukraine informed that Yana Shkarlat, 31, who sustained burns to 65% of her body as a result of a russian attack on Pryluky on 7 April, has died in a hospital in Germany.

According to the City’s Department of Education, Chernihiv Lyceum No. 22, which was damaged during the large-scale russian UAV attack on the city on the night of 19 April, switched to remote learning on 20 April. As part of the building remains undamaged, inspections and inventory assessments are ongoing to determine the future format of education.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

9 enemy UAVs were shot down over the oblast overnight.

4 people were injured, including one child.

Nikopol region. In Nikopol, boys aged 16 and 18 were injured as a result of artillery shelling. They were hospitalised in moderate condition. Also, the occupiers attacked Marhanets, Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities by drones and artillery.

Synelnykove region. In Dubovykivka community, men aged 65 and 40 were injured due to a UAV attack. A private house caught fire. Pokrovske community was struck by a KAB. Also, a private house caught fire. As a result of UAV strikes in Mykolaivka community, 2 private houses were destroyed.

Nikopol region. Another FPV strike on a passenger bus — women aged 65 and 37 and a 53-year-old man were injured. This occurred in Pokrovske community, where 2 more people, a 52-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, were injured during the day due to drone attacks. 2 cars and a minibus were damaged. The enemy attacked Nikopol and Marhanets community by drones.

Synelnykove region. A fire broke out. In Mykolaivka community, 2 private houses were damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

During an air raid alert, Kirovohrad oblast was under enemy attack. As a result of a UAV strike, a fire broke out at one of the facilities near Kropyvnytskyi. As of now, it has been promptly extinguished by units of the State Emergency Service. All responsible services continue to work at the site. According to preliminary information, there were no fatalities or injuries.

In Kropyvnytskyi, memorial ceremonies were held for servicemen Serhii Beznohov, Mykola Yankul and Serhii Lenchenko.

Serhii Beznogov was killed on 28 July 2024, during combat operations in Donetsk oblast.

Mykola Yankul was killed on 11 October 2024, in kursk oblast of the russian federation.

Serhii Lenchenko died on 15 April 2026, while undergoing inpatient treatment.

Poltava oblast

In Poltava oblast, a memorial ceremony is planned for serviceman Oleksii Sapiha from Pishchanska community. Oleksii, commander of the 3rd tank company of the tank battalion of the 61st Separate Mechanised Steppe Brigade, was killed on 12 February 2025, near Mykilske village in Sumy oblast.

In Poltava, a memorial ceremony was held for soldier Oleksandr Melnikov. He was killed on 5 November 2024, while performing tasks during combat operations in Donetsk oblast.

Servicemen Mykola Murzin, Yevhen Semenov and Serhii Rakitin were killed. All were residents of Poltava oblast.

Mykola Murzin was killed on 23 October 2024, while carrying out combat missions near Bohoiavlenka settlement, Donetsk oblast.

Yevhen Semenov was killed on 2 August 2024. He had long been considered missing.

Serhii Rakitin was killed on 27 October 2024, while performing a combat mission in kursk oblast.

In Poltava, it is planned to introduce the award Mother of the Defender and to provide payments of UAH 50,000 to Heroes of Ukraine. Relevant changes to the city program for supporting veterans were approved by the relevant deputy commission.

In Poltava, it is planned to install 96 memorial steles for another 192 fallen defenders on Kashtanova Alley. About UAH 3m have been allocated for the project.

Musician from the Netherlands Oleh Lysenko, originally from Poltava oblast, donated an ambulance vehicle to the front. He raised the necessary funds during charity concerts in Europe. More than  €20,000 were needed to purchase and equip the vehicle.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA, stated that a russian drone was destroyed in the sky over Cherkasy oblast.

Serviceman Vitalii Taraban from Cherkasy oblast was killed. This occurred on 4 April 2024, while carrying out a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi awarded defender from Cherkasy oblast Oleksandr Danyliuk with the badge For Conscientious Service.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on 20 April, Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled 22 russian attacks in Huliaipole region. In particular, combat clashes took place near the settlements of Dobropillia, Tsvitkove, Zaliznychne, Hirske, Myrne, Staroukrainka, Olenokostiantynivka, Huliaipilske and in the area of Huliaipole.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that on 20 April, 2 people were killed and 10 injured as a result of russian attacks on Zaporizhzhia and Zaporizhzhia oblast. The russian forces carried out more than 700 strikes on 39 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Mykolaiv oblast

Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, on 20 April, russian forces attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities 5 times by FPV drones.

As a result of one of the attacks in Dmytrivka village, a private house and an outbuilding were damaged.

Odesa oblast

The Air Force reported that today, a UAV was detected in the airspace moving from the Black Sea toward Chornomorsk.

Kherson oblast

Referring to Kherson RMA, at around 5:20pm, russian forces attacked a woman by a drone in Korabelnyi district of Kherson. The occupiers struck a 58-year-old woman who was walking along the street. She sustained shrapnel wounds to her limbs, a concussion, blast injuries and a closed head injury.

At around 9:20am, a woman was injured in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson as a result of a russian UAV attack. A 52-year-old woman was hospitalised with blast injuries and a concussion.

At approximately 9:30am, russian forces killed a municipal worker in Tsentralnyi district of Kherson. The enemy attacked the 54-year-old man by a UAV. He sustained injuries incompatible with life.

A resident of Novodmytrivka sought medical assistance after being attacked by a russian drone on the evening of 18 April. The 48-year-old man was hospitalized with blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his leg.

An elderly woman who was injured on 11 April as a result of russian shelling of Korabelnyi district of Kherson died in the hospital. Doctors fought for the life of the 77-year-old woman until the last, but her injuries were too severe.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

Maryanivska community presented a state award to the family of the deceased defender of Ukraine Andriy Shepelyuk. The III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was received by his mother. The soldier of the 100th Separate Brigade was killed on 9 October, 2025 while performing a combat mission in Donetsk oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

Uzhhorod City Council reported that 12 internally displaced persons who lived in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, are participants in hostilities or persons with disabilities as a result of the war and are currently registered in the city will receive housing vouchers.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk received 9 modern Electron duobuses. The transport was provided with the support of the European Union and the European Investment Bank.

Lviv oblast

The Popeliv Secondary Education Institution is using 3D printing technology to produce special trench lanterns for the defenders. They also collected over UAH 20,000 in donations from caring community residents.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast opens a new direction of cooperation with Italy. Rivne oblast delegation concluded a working visit to the Italian province of Trapani by signing a letter of intent for cooperation.

Ternopil oblast

The 4th Prayer Breakfast was held in Ternopil, bringing together clergy, military personnel, families of fallen heroes, volunteers, government officials, and business. The event began with a joint prayer for Ukrainian defenders and the future of the state.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

711 active military personnel from Khmelnytskyi community received financial assistance for their own needs. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 7.1m.

Chernivtsi oblast

In Chernivtsi, a 150 kW solar power plant has started operating at the Mahala pumping station. The investor installed the panels for his own UAH 13.7m. The project will pay off in approximately 5 years. After that, the station will become the property of the city free of charge, and all further savings will remain in the budget.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for the Economy, announced that Ukraine will receive the 1st tranche of the EU loan in late May or early June. According to the financing strategy agreed with Ukraine, €28bn will be allocated for military support and €17bn for general budget support.
