War in Ukraine today: latest news, 20 March 2026 (photo)

It has been the 1486  th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

On 20 March, there were 146 combat engagements in the frontline. The Defense Forces continue to halt the enemy, eliminate personnel, and exhaust the occupiers’ combat potential by delivering systematic fire damage.

The enemy launched 58 airstrikes, dropping 163 guided aerial bombs (KABs). Additionally, they deployed 5,285 kamikaze drones and carried out 2,856 shellings of settlements and Ukrainian troops’ positions.

  • Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk: The Defense Forces repelled seven enemy assaults. The enemy also launched five airstrikes (13 KABs) and conducted 94 shellings, including 13 using MLRS.
  • Towards Southern Sloboda: The enemy launched six assaults against our positions near Volchanski Khutory, Vovchansk, Okhrimivka, Prylypka, Zelene, and Starytsia.
  • Towards Kupiansk: The enemy attacked twice in the vicinity of Novoplatonivka and Kurylivka.
  • Towards Lyman: there were not any active operations.
  • Towards Sloviansk: The enemy attempted to advance six times near Rai-Oleksandrivka, Yampil, and Platonivka. One engagement is still ongoing.
  • Towards Kramatorsk: There were no active enemy offensive operations.
  • Towards Kostiantynivka: Occupiers launched 18 assaults near Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Illinivka, Rusyn Yar, and Sofiivka.
  • Towards Pokrovsk: The Defense Forces have repelled 28 enemy assaults near Rodynske, Bilytske, Myrnohrad, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novomykolaivka, Novopavlivka, and Filiia. One engagement is yet to conclude. According to preliminary data, 87 occupiers were neutralized and 28 wounded. Destroyed: 1 heavy flamethrower system (TOS), 2 vehicles, and 10 units of special equipment. Damaged: 3 vehicles, 1 unit of special equipment, and 2 infantry shelters. Additionally, 282 UAVs of various types were destroyed or neutralized.
  • Towards Oleksandrivka: Occupiers twice attempted to improve their tactical position, attacking near Ternove and Kalynivske. Additionally, the settlement of Pokrovske was hit by an airstrike.
  • Towards Huliaipole: 19 occupier attacks occurred near Dobropillia, Zaliznychne, Zelene, Staroukrainka, Varvarivka, and Luhivske. The enemy launched airstrikes near Hirke, Huliaipilske, Novoselivka, Dolynka, Kopani, and Trudove. Two engagements are ongoing.
  • Towards Orikhiv: The enemy attacked our defenders’ positions near Stepnohirsk. An airstrike hit the settlement of Komyshuvakha.
  • Towards Kherson: One combat engagement took place. The settlement of Olhivka was hit by an airstrike.

In other directions, there were no significant changes in the operational situation

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

There were 201 combat engagements. Towards Southern Sloboda, russian troops attempted to break through the defenses of Ukrainian defenders 19 times in the direction of Prylypka, Lyman, Starytsia, Vovchansk, Tykhe, Bochkovo, Okhrimivka, Zybyne, Chuhunivka, Fyholivka, and Krasne Pershe. Towards Kupiansk, the Russian army attacked 11 times in the direction of Petropavlivka, Pishchane, Hlushkivka, Novoplatonivka, Borivska Andriivka, and Kupiansk.

In Chuhuiv, a morning strike by a russian drone completely destroyed one home, while about ten others were damaged. Two people were injured, and another suffered an acute stress reaction. Around 09:15, a russian guided aerial bomb (KAB) struck an open area near Ivashky; no casualties were reported. In Kivsharivka, an FPV drone wounded a 73-year-old woman who has since received medical assistance.

Due to a russian strike on Kharkiv on March 12, the “Neutron Source” nuclear subcritical assembly was de-energized. According to the IAEA, the russians attempted to hit a power substation near the facility. On the night of March 20, russians struck the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv with a drone, damaging windows in an educational institution. Over the past day, Kharkiv and seven other settlements in the region were under Russian strikes.

A 54-year-old woman was injured by shelling in Hrachivka of the Vilkhuvatka community. Medics also provided aid to a 53-year-old woman who had been wounded previously. russians attacked the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv with drones. To strike the Kharkiv region, the russian army used Geran-2 and Molniya UAVs, FPV drones, and unidentified types of drones.

Educational institutions, a children’s creativity center, an apartment building, private houses, cars, and an emergency medical vehicle were damaged in Kharkiv oblast. 

The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 184 people over the past 24 hours; since it began operations, 23,598 people have been registered there.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the Regional Military Administration, the Cabinet of Ministers has allocated nearly 1.2 billion hryvnias for social housing for displaced persons from Mariupol, to be built near Kyiv. The construction project involves the creation of residential estates with flats ready for habitation, including refurbishment, furniture and household appliances. The housing will be provided on a social rental basis at below-market rates. The first such neighbourhood will be built in Bila Tserkva.

The twelfth basic training course has concluded at the Kyiv Regional Centre for Preparing the Population for National Resistance. The course programme covered training in 15 military disciplines and included dozens of hours of intensive practical training.

On 18 March, the Kyiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that law enforcement officers had referred the case file concerning a sergeant of the 155th Separate Marine Brigade of the russian Pacific Fleet to court. He will be tried for torturing a civilian man in Katyuzhanka during the occupation of Kyiv oblast at the start of the full-scale invasion.

The Kyiv City State Administration reported that Mo, the muntjac at Kyiv Zoo, has recovered from a serious injury sustained as a result of enemy shelling in November 2025. His broken jaw has healed, and he is already enjoying fresh grass and green twigs. Mo and Milu have also welcomed a newborn muntjac fawn.

A new postage stamp, ‘Bringing Back to Life: Demining Heroes’, was unveiled in Kyiv. It is dedicated to Ukrainian deminers. The stamp was issued as part of the ‘Own Stamp’ project. It depicts a deminer standing next to a demining vehicle that withstood a ‘Lancet’ strike. Behind them, a farmer is planting a field.

Zhytomyr oblast

Explosive ordnance disposal experts from the Zhytomyr Regional Police are warning residents of the oblast to be cautious due to russian drones dropping anti-tank mines. Following each instance of enemy shelling, experts from the explosive ordnance disposal unit respond promptly to clear the remaining munitions. At the same time, law enforcement officials emphasise that the enemy is increasingly using kamikaze drones not only to strike targets but also to remotely drop combat elements.

According to the Regional Military Administration, there are 10 Resilience Centres operating in Zhytomyr oblast in 2026. These are accessible social spaces within communities where anyone can receive free psychosocial support, individual consultations with specialists, and assistance in difficult life circumstances, as well as take part in activities aimed at strengthening mental health and inner resilience. In total, over 13,000 people have already received psychosocial services at the centres, including 260 war veterans and 604 members of their families.

Sumy oblast

Sumy branch of “Hazmerezhi” reported that in Bilopillia, russian forces attacked a gas service vehicle by an FPV drone. The incident occurred when an emergency crew had set out to inspect a gas pipeline following damage caused by previous russian attacks. The workers managed to leave the vehicle in time and no one was injured. This marks the second targeted attack on gas service transport in Bilopillia within a week, the statement said.

The regional Prosecutor’s Office informed that on 19 March at around 2:30pm, russian forces attacked civilian infrastructure in Sumy community by a drone. As a result of the strike, two people were injured. A 49-year-old and a 28-year-old man were wounded. According to the Military Administration, during the day the enemy struck near a shopping centre in Kovpakivskyi district of Sumy. A 23-year-old man was injured.

As a result of russian shelling across the oblast on 19 March, three people were killed and 13 injured:

  • In Khutir-Mykhailivskyi community, men aged 37 and 33 were killed. Men aged 54 and 40 were injured;
  • In Velyka Pysarivka community, a 62-year-old man was killed in russian drone attacks, and a 55-year-old man was injured;
  • In Esman community, four people were injured following a guided aerial bomb strike: men aged 69 and 61, and women aged 50 and 73;
  • In Vorozhba community, two men aged 64 and 65 were injured after an enemy drone struck a civilian vehicle;
  • In Khotin community, a 69-year-old man was injured when a drone hit his home;
  • In Sumy community, men aged 23, 28 and 49 were injured as a result of enemy drone strikes.

Between the morning of 19 March and the morning of 20 March, russian forces carried out more than 80 attacks on 37 settlements across 19 territorial communities of the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumy and Shostka regions. The enemy used mortars, artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Over the past day, the air raid alert in the oblast lasted for 19 hours and 26 minutes.

Civilian infrastructure was damaged and destroyed:

  • In Hlukhiv community, civilian infrastructure facilities and an apartment building were damaged;
  • In Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house was destroyed, and another residential house, a civilian infrastructure facility and non-residential premises were damaged;
  • In Shostka community, an apartment building was damaged;
  • In Sumy community, an administrative building, a shopping centre building and vehicles were damaged;
  • In Duboviazivka community, a private household and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
  • In Vorozhba community, a private car was damaged;
  • In Berezivka community, passenger vehicles were damaged;
  • In Khutir-Mykhailivskyi community, a private residential house was damaged;
  • In Chernechchyna community, a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
  • In Bilopillia community, an apartment building and a private car were damaged.

Oleksii Kuleba, Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine In Sumy oblast, reported that physical protection for transformers is being constructed to withstand russian attacks. Since the beginning of 2026, protective structures at three facilities in the oblast have been targeted in more than 50 attacks and sustained around 110 direct drone hits. According to him, one transformer withstood 60 direct strikes, demonstrating the effectiveness of such protection.

According to the Institute of Mass Information russian UAVs destroyed the home of Oleksii Pasiuha, editor-in-chief of the newspaper “Vorskla”, in Sumy oblast. The first UAV destroyed part of the house, while the second struck inside the building and completely burned it down. According to Oleksii, the house destroyed by russians had been started by his father, also a journalist. Together they had built the family home over 20 years.

Chernihiv oblast

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that on the morning of 20 March, russian forces attacked a residential area in the border town of Semenivka by a Molniia-type strike UAV. As a result of the attack, a civilian vehicle was damaged, as well as windows and roofs of private houses.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, reported that during the night of 20 March, russian forces attacked Novhorod-Siverskyi by Heran-type strike UAVs. Two strikes were recorded.

Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that during 19 March, russian forces attacked four border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out shelling by mortars (9 explosions) and tube artillery (12 explosions), launched strikes using Shahed-type UAVs (1 explosion), FPV drones (41 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (5 explosions). Twelve settlements were under enemy fire.

According to the State Emergency Service, in Chernihiv oblast, pyrotechnics units neutralised remnants of a russian Iskander missile. They were found in an open area in Nizhyn region.

The Regional Military Administration announced that Chernihiv oblast will receive UAH 487.2m. from the Government for priority works to prepare for the next winter as part of the Regional Resilience Plan. The key task for the upcoming heating season is the restoration of critical infrastructure destroyed by russians, as well as the development of decentralised generation and the expansion of reserves.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland Pasi Hellman visited Chernihiv oblast. Partners reviewed the implementation of projects financed by Finland.

Chernihiv Regional State Administration informed that during February and March 2026, seven diesel generators with a capacity of 5.5 kW each were delivered to educational institutions in Chernihiv oblast by the Solidarity Charitable Foundation.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, said that occupying forces struck the region by multiple launch rocket systems, artillery and drones. Strikes targeted the regional centre, as well as Marhanets, Pokrovske rural and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Two private houses and a power line were damaged.

The enemy attacked Synelnykove, Shakhtarske, as well as Vasylkivka and Mykolaivka communities by UAVs. A fire broke out. Men aged 65 and 40 were injured. Seven private houses, two outbuildings, a power line and a gas pipeline were damaged. FPV drones struck Mezhove community, damaging a fire station.

In Pokrovske, three private houses were damaged as a result of guided aerial bomb strikes.

Occupying forces continued drone and artillery attacks on the regional centre, as well as Marhanets, Pokrovsk rural and Chervonohryhorivka communities. Fires broke out. A garage, enterprises, infrastructure and a power line were damaged. The enemy struck Mykolaivka and Shakhtarsk communities by UAVs, damaging a private house and an administrative building. russian forces also struck the Hrushivka community by UAVs, damaging infrastructure.

Poltava oblast

Poltava Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday evening and overnight, russian forces attacked Poltava oblast using UAVs. Air defence forces engaged the targets. As a result of falling debris and direct strikes, damage to a power line and equipment at one of the enterprises was recorded in Myrhorod region.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, informed that overnight, air defence units shot down two russian UAVs over Cherkasy oblast.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Today, 20 March, russian troops attacked Zaporizhzhia with drones. As a result of the shelling, one person was injured. There is damage to buildings in the city, and a fire broke out.

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 19 March, the occupiers carried out 864 strikes on 40 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces conducted 19 airstrikes on Malokaterynivka, Veselianka, Liubytske, Yurkivka, Tersianka, Liubymivka, Huliaipilske, Vozdvyzhivka, Novoselivka, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Zaliznychne, Kopani, and Verkhnia Tersa. 610 UAVs of various types (mostly FPV drones) attacked Zaporizhzhia, Vilniansk, Kushuhum, Yasna Poliana, Chervonodniprovka, Novooleksandrivka, Lisne, Stepnohirsk, Stepove, Pavlivka, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Myrne, Charivne, Staroukrainka, Zelene, Varvarivka, Dobropillia, Nove Zaporizhzhia, Solodke, Preobrazhenka, and Olenokostiantynivka. There were five MLRS strikes on Zaliznychne, Novopavlivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Vozdvyzhivka. 230 artillery strikes hit Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Pavlivka, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Myrne, Charivne, Staroukrainka, Varvarivka, and Dobropillia. Seventy reports were received about damage to homes, non-residential buildings, infrastructure facilities, and vehicles.

The General Staff reported that as of 16:00 on 20 March, eight attacks took placein the areas of Dobropillia, Zaliznychne, Zelene, and Luhivske towards Huliaipole. The enemy attacked the positions of Ukrainian defenders near Stepnohirsk, heading toward Orikhiv. Over the past day, 19 March, the Defense Forces of Ukraine repelled 12 russian attacks towards the Huliaipole direction and one towards Orikhiv.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 19 March, during the day and at night, the enemy attacked the region with Shahed-131/136 UAVs. Energy infrastructure facilities were targeted. As a result of the attack, two settlements in Mykolaiv region were left without electricity. In addition, due to falling debris from a strike drone in Bashtanka district, eight private houses were damaged. There were no casualties.

Over the past day, 16 Shahed-131/136 attack UAVs and various types of decoy drones were shot down or suppressed over Mykolaiv oblast.

Odesa oblast

Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that on the night of 20 March, russian armed forces attacked the port and industrial infrastructure facilities in Odesa region with strike drones. Two administrative buildings and two civilian commercial vessels flying the flags of Palau and Barbados were also damaged. Two civilians — men aged 36 and 37 — were injured in the attack.

During the nighttime attack on Odesa region, border guards destroyed three russian drones over the sea. According to the Air Command “South,” air defense in southern Ukraine neutralized 54 Shahed and Gerbera drones, 39 attack UAVs of other types, and three reconnaissance drones.

The head of the Restoration Agency, Serhii Sukhomlyn, reported that a bridge in the village of Maiaky in Odesa oblast, which had been targeted by russian attacks and is a key transport artery for the south of the region, was fully restored. The russian army began attacking the bridge in December 2025, after which traffic on that section was temporarily suspended.

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that on 20 March at around 13:30, russian forces attacked a woman with a drone in the village of Tomaryne in Beryslav community. The 61-year-old resident sustained shrapnel wounds to the face and abdomen, a concussion, a blast injury, and a closed traumatic brain injury. She is in critical condition.

According to the Police of Kherson oblast, yesterday, 19 March, russian forces attacked Kherson, Shyroka Balka, Kizomys, Honcharne, Antonivka, Dniprovske, Prydniprovske, Sofiivka, Chornobaivka, Pryozorne, Novodmytrivka, Sadove, Bilozerka, Yantarne, Veletenske, Rozlyv, Tomyna Balka, Stanislav, Komyshany, Beryslav, Chervone, Novooleksandrivka, Zolota Balka, Novokairy, Novoraisk, Urozhaine, Bruskinske, Kucherske, Osokorivka, Burhunka, Odradokamianka, Olhivka, Kozatske, and Vesele. In these settlements, 29 objects were damaged: six apartment buildings, 16 private houses, a transport enterprise, an administrative building, an educational institution, two cars, and a shuttle taxi. One person was killed, and four were injured as a result of russian aggression, including two medical workers.

The General Staff reported that as of 16:00 on 20 March, one combat engagement took place near the Antonivskyi Bridge towards Kherson.

The head of the regional military administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, reported that three children were evacuated from the temporarily occupied left bank of Kherson oblast. The rescue was made possible with the support of the charitable organization Save Ukraine. The Police of Kherson oblast reported that officers evacuated a woman with a 10-month-old child who needed medical assistance from Mylove community in Kherson oblast.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Gennady Chyzhykov, President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Ukraine, and Oleksandr Smolych, President of Volyn Chamber of Commerce. They discussed priority areas of development of Volyn oblast, in particular in the context of cooperation between the authorities and business.

Zakarpattia oblast

The Honor and Valor of Zakarpattia Oblast badge was awarded to Yurii Zhurakivskyi, serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, rifleman-assistant grenade launcher of the mechanized detachment of the mechanized platoon of the mechanized company of the Military Unit A4921, call sign ZHURAVEL (posthumously). The award was received by Zhurakovskaya’s mother, Halina.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Svitlana Onyshchuk, Head of the RMA, met with the families of the fallen Defenders. Relatives of the fallen servicemen of the Carpathian region were presented with state and regional awards (posthumously) as a sign of gratitude for their courage, bravery and sacrifice.

Lviv oblast

Lviv RMA met with families of servicemen of the 103rd Territorial Defense Brigade, originally from Lviv oblast. The key topic was clear mechanisms for searching for missing and deceased soldiers.

Lviv oblast hosted an all-Ukrainian archery competition among veterans. Over 100 participants from 19 oblasts of Ukraine. These are the 1st competitions of this level within the League of the Unconquered regional project.

Rivne oblast

The RMA awarded the For the Defense of Ukraine Presidential Medal of Honor to 22 police officers from Rivne oblast. They performed combat missions in Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council announced that starting 23 March, combatants will be able to use a new service – monthly accrual of preferential parking hours.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community sent 10 electronic warfare systems (multi-band, automotive) worth UAH 2m.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi city council reported that the community has allocated UAH 7.9m to support security and defense forces.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The European Council expects the first tranche of €90bn to be disbursed to Ukraine by early April. The joint statement of EU leaders notes that the decision to provide financial support for 2026–2027 was made in December 2025 and was recently finally approved by EU parliamentarians. At the same time, the European Council drew attention to the fact that Ukraine’s financing deficit remains at the level of €30bn. In this regard, the EU calls for increased outreach work with 3rd countries in order to attract additional support.

Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao has joined the fundraising for animal volunteers in Kharkiv. The woman announced her cooperation with the charity platform Charitybuzz. She holds charity auctions with unique lots, such as meetings with stars. For example, the director invited those who wish to have a virtual cup of tea with her. The proceeds from the auction will go to support the public organization Animal Rescue Kharkiv, which is engaged in rescuing animals affected by war.
