What happened in Ukraine today:

The Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding back russian occupiers’ advance. Terrorists continue to kill Ukrainians and destroy Ukrainian cities and villages.

On 20 June, there were 91 combat engagements on the frontline.

Communities of Yelyne in Chernihiv oblast; Prohres, Velyka Pysarivka, Marine, Pokrovka, Maiske in Sumy oblast; and Lemishchyne in Kharkiv oblasr were hit by enemy artillery and mortar fire.

Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, Ukrainian soldiers repelled 18 enemy attacks, and six more combat engagements are ongoing. The invaders’ aviation carried out 6 strikes, dropping 12 guided bombs. In addition, the enemy carried out 116 artillery attacks on the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements, including one from multiple launch rocket systems.

Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy attacked five times in the vicinity of Zelene and Vovchansk, three attacks are still ongoing.

Towards  Kupiansk, russian occupiers launched one attack in the vicinity of Stepova Novoselivka.

Towards Lyman, the invading army launched 12 attacks on Ukrainian positions in the areas of the settlements of Novyi Mir, Olhivka, Hrekivka, Ridkodub and in the directions of Karpivka and Hlushchenkove. Four fighting is currently ongoing.

Towards Siversk, in the vicinity of ​​Hryhorivka, the enemy attacked the positions of Ukrainian troops.

Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy is trying to advance in the vicinity of Bila Hora, Predtechyne, and Stupochky. Units of the Defense Forces repelled all four attacks.

Towards Toretsk, the enemy tried to wedge into Ukrainian defenses five times in the vicinity of Toretsk and Yablunivka. Four assaults were repelled.

Towards Pokrovsk, russian occupiers made 28 attempts to push Ukrainian soldiers from the occupied positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Poltavka, Myrne, Malynivka, Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Udachne, Nadiivka, Sribne, and in the vicinity of Volodymyrivka, Novopavlivka, and Novopidhirne. The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 22 attacks.

Towards Novopavlivka, the Ukrainian defenders stopped six enemy assaults, and three more clashes are currently ongoing. The enemy tried to advance in the vicinity of Odradne, Bahatyr, Vilne Pole and Shevchenko.

Towards Huliaipole, enemy aircraft struck Huliaipole with unguided aircraft missiles; the enemy did not conduct any assault operations.

Towards Orikhiv, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy attacks in the vicinity of Novoandriivka.

Towards Kherson, there were no clashes.

Ukraine has successfully facilitated the return of another group of seriously wounded and gravely ill prisoners of war, as announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. All the defenders freed on June 20 are of the rank-and-file and non-commissioned officer personnel.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces will establish its first all-female crew dedicated to intercepting russian drones. This development was reported on the official page of the 427th Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The situation in the Kharkiv region remains tense. Russian forces continue targeted strikes against civilian infrastructure, using guided aerial bombs, kamikaze drones, and FPV drones — including attacks on evacuation routes.

Evacuation from Kupiansk is becoming increasingly dangerous due to intensified Russian FPV drone strikes, including direct attacks on vehicles evacuating civilians. This was reported by Andrii Kanashevych, head of the Kupiansk District Military Administration, who noted that the enemy is deliberately targeting evacuation operations.

In Kharkiv and the region, Russian forces are deploying Shahed-type drones equipped with enhanced warheads weighing up to 88 kilograms. This was confirmed by Spartak Borysenko, head of a division within the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

Over the past 24 hours, Russian forces struck Kharkiv and eight other settlements in the region. According to Kharkiv Regional Military Administration head Oleh Syniehubov, six civilians were wounded, including two children.
In Kharkiv, a 27-year-old woman and two girls aged 12 and 17 were injured.
A 33-year-old woman was wounded in the village of Vysokyi, a 53-year-old man in Korotych, and a 36-year-old woman in Vovchansk.

The enemy used a broad range of weapons, including three guided aerial bombs, Shahed and Geran-2 drones, Lancet loitering munitions, and FPV drones. Six drone strikes were recorded in the Shevchenkivskyi, Kyivskyi, and Osnovianskyi districts of Kharkiv. Civilian infrastructure sustained significant damage.

In Kharkiv, a farewell ceremony was held for Senior Police Sergeant Valerii Miakshyn, who was killed in action while carrying out a combat mission as part of a special police battalion.

Russian assault operations continue daily in the Vovchansk area, despite the town being almost completely destroyed. This was reported by Pavlo Shamshyn, spokesperson for the Kharkiv Operational-Tactical Group, during a national TV broadcast.

Donetsk oblast

 

Russian forces continue shelling populated areas across Donetsk region, targeting residential and civilian infrastructure. There are casualties among the civilian population.

Pokrovsk District
In Pokrovsk, two people were injured and a vehicle was damaged due to enemy shelling. In Rodynske, a private house and a bank building sustained damage.

Kramatorsk District
In Lyman, two vehicles and a power line were damaged. In Shchurove, four cars and a garage were destroyed. In Sloviansk, two industrial buildings were hit. In Zoloti Prudy, three non-residential premises were damaged.
In Kostiantynivka, one civilian was killed and another wounded. Three private homes, an administrative building, and a vehicle were also damaged.
In Vyroliubivka, five houses were reported damaged.

According to the Kostiantynivka City Military Administration, at 04:50, Bilokuzmynivka Starosta District came under artillery fire. Four private house facades were damaged; no injuries were reported.
At 08:10, an FPV drone strike targeted the city of Kostiantynivka, damaging an official vehicle.
Additionally, around 4:00 a.m., a drone attack was reported in the area of the village of Chervonyi. Damage and power outages occurred, but no casualties were reported, according to the “Typical Kostiantynivka” Telegram channel.

Bakhmut District
In the city of Siversk, six residential houses were damaged as a result of enemy shelling.

Frontline Situation
According to the military analysis group DeepState, Russian forces have captured the village of Shevchenko Pershe in the Hrodivska community of Pokrovsk district, expanding the occupied territory by 21 km².

 Further Russian advances were reported near the village of Koptiove toward Pokrovsk in the west, and near Yablunivka toward Kostiantynivka in the north.

The frontline between Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions remains highly dynamic and dangerous.

Luhansk oblast

Active Movement of Russian Military Equipment and Possible Chemical Contamination Reported in Occupied Luhansk Region

Massive Transfer of Military Equipment Near Starobilsk
According to the partisan movement “ATESH,” Russian forces are actively relocating military equipment in the area of the village of Kalmykivka, attempting to avoid detection by Ukrainian drones.

 A convoy consisting of several “Tigr” armored vehicles and “KamAZ” trucks was observed near Starobilsk. The vehicles left the main road and entered a forested area, where five more vehicles arrived later. Sources within “ATESH” report this as a clear indication of the occupiers’ growing fear of Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance.

Threat of Chemical Contamination in Alchevsk
Residents of temporarily occupied Alchevsk report a strong chemical odor in parts of the city, accompanied by deteriorating health conditions.
Local chats and social media are filled with alarming reports of weakness, fever, headaches, and nausea among residents. Particularly concerning is the fact that the smell is most noticeable near areas where children are present.
The exact cause of the odor has not yet been determined, but the situation is raising serious concerns among the local population.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The Regional Military Administration reported that 592 facilities have been restored in Borodianka, and work is underway to restore 53 more. Five educational institutions have been repaired, including the Lithuanian-Ukrainian Lyceum and the Pinocchio kindergarten. Residential areas, schools, clinics, and social infrastructure were destroyed in the village: a total of 825 facilities were damaged or ruined. The community’s losses were among the highest in the region.

Bucha Mayor Anatoliy Fedoruk announced that in the Bucha community in Kyiv oblast, the community plans to repair 79 apartment buildings damaged during the hostilities. The buildings will be restored in Bucha, Vorzel, Gavrylivka, and Myrotske. The restoration work is part of the international project HOPE – ‘Repairing homes to restore people’s rights and opportunities.’ Its goal is to help people who have lost their homes due to the war.

On 19 June, Kyiv mourned the death of actor and soldier Yurii Felipenko, who was killed on the front lines. He died on 15 June 2025. The funeral took place at the Podil Theatre, where Felipenko had worked since 2016. Before the war, he played many roles in the theatre and was also known to audiences for his leading role in the film ‘Colours of Passion’ and his participation in the series ‘Promise to God’.

The US citizen who died during the attack on Kyiv on 17 June was an artist from Oregon who created metal and wood artworks for homes, gardens and businesses. Fred Grendi arrived in Kyiv at the end of May, shortly before his 62nd birthday, to help clear the rubble after the russian attacks. According to his relatives, his decision was motivated by the change in US policy towards Ukraine. He believed that the aggressor should not be allowed to act in this way and leave people in distress.

DTEK Kyiv Power Grid reported that in Kyiv, at the site of destruction after the russian missile attack on 17 June, rescuers and utility services found a live cat under the rubble of buildings. The animal had been there for several days without food or water, its fur was partially burned, and it showed signs of severe stress. Attempts were made to help the cat, but it ran away. Residents of the area are asked to notify animal welfare organisations or veterinarians if they see the animal so that it can be examined and helped.

Head of the Regional State Administration Mykola Kalashnik announced that 10 schools in the Kyiv region have joined the All-Ukrainian project ‘100 Solar Schools’ and 7 of them have already been equipped with solar panels as a source of additional independent power supply. In total, 37 educational institutions in Kyiv oblast have already been equipped with solar panels. All panels were installed with the support of international non-governmental organisations, donors, charitable foundations, and local budgets.

The Borodianka Women’s Rehabilitation Centre recently hosted a very warm and caring event – massage rehabilitation sessions for women as part of the project ‘VARTA: Recovery. Art. Therapy. Adaptation.’ This event was made possible thanks to the support of the Ukrainian Women’s Fund.

On 17 June, the Oscar cinema in the capital hosted the premiere of the documentary film ‘No Right to Make Mistakes’, which tells the story of the work of bomb disposal experts of the National Police of Ukraine.

Zhytomyr oblast

The RMA reports that Ukrainian defenders received a batch of equipment that should increase mobility when performing combat missions and providing logistics. Scouts and paratroopers received: 6 Forte Cross Max motorcycles and a Neoplan bus for DShV units and 2 Forte Cross Max motorcycles for GUR units. The assistance was provided thanks to Zhytomyr Assistance Headquarters and with the assistance of followers of Taras Berezovets, Ukrainian journalist and political strategist.

Thanks to the grant program to support veteran entrepreneurship from the Ukrainian Veterans Fund of the Ministry of Veterans, 120 veteran business projects, including those from Zhytomyr oblast, will receive financial support.

On June 19, the Memorial Memory and Honor was opened in Andrushivka on the territory of Andrushivka Butter and Cheese Factory in honor of the memory of those employees of this enterprise who died in the battles for Ukraine, as reported by the city council. The opening of the memorial was attended by families of fallen soldiers, company management and employees, as well as representatives of local authorities.

Sumy oblast

Yaroslav Chepurnyi, spokesperson for ‘Kursk’ Operational Group, said that towards Northeastern Slobozhanschyna, Ukrainian Defence Forces continue to hold back russian units, who are operating mainly in small assault groups. The enemy is leveraging its numerical advantage and persistently attempting to advance into border areas of Sumy oblast, but Ukrainian troops are repelling the attacks. Notably, the Armed Forces of Ukraine recently liberated the settlement of Andriivka.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGS) reported that operators of UAVs from the ‘Steel Border’ border brigade, operating on Kursk front, destroyed two enemy shelters containing personnel and also struck a russian boat.

The Regional Military Administration informed that late in the evening of 19 June, russian forces attacked Sumy community by drones. As a result of the strike, a building in the residential sector of Kovpakivka district of Sumy caught fire. The fire was extinguished.

From the morning of 19 June to the morning of 20 June, russian forces carried out 75 attacks on 25 settlements across 11 territorial communities in Sumy oblast. Sumy and Shostka regions recorded the highest number of strikes. The enemy actively used over 30 VOG grenade drops from UAVs, as well as FPV-drones, guided aerial bombs (GABs), multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

As a result of russian strikes over the past day, a private house was damaged in Yunakivka community, and a building in the residential sector of Sumy community caught fire.

Over the past day, 42 people were evacuated by local authorities, in cooperation with State Emergency Service units, the National Police, and NGOs from border communities.

Thanks to cooperation between Ukraine, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), and Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the oblast has already received 19 A092N6 city buses. This is part of the international technical assistance project titled ‘Procurement of Goods for Humanitarian Aid in Ukraine’.

Mykhailo Shchepkin National Theatre in Sumy is ending its theatrical season early on the main stage and cancelling performances due to the security situation, the theatre announced on 20 June via social media.

Chernihiv oblast

Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that throughout 19 June, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast — Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (3 explosions), barrel artillery strikes (19 explosions), and unguided aerial rocket attacks (8 explosions). They also launched a strike by a ‘Molniya’-type fixed-wing UAV (1 explosion), conducted FPV-drone strikes (33 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (8 explosions). A total of 15 settlements came under enemy fire.

In Pryluky, three families will receive UAH 1m. each in compensation from the city budget for destroyed housing following a russian drone attack on the night of 6 June. To enable this, city council deputies amended the 2025 Programme for One-Time Financial Assistance to City Residents during a session on 19 June.

according to Viacheslav Chaus, Regional Governor, around 300 units of computer equipment have been donated by Latvian partners from Brunotava Association for colleges and vocational schools in Chernihiv oblast. The equipment has been distributed among 11 institutions of professional pre-tertiary and vocational education in the oblast.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovs Oblast Council, reports that from evening until morning, the enemy did not stop attacking Nikopol region with drones, artillery and MLRSs. In total, about a dozen and a half strikes were carried out. They targeted the regional center, Marhanetsk, Myrove and Pokrovske communities. The enemy fired about 40 shells from MLRSs at Nikopol. A 39-year-old man was injured. He was hospitalized with a shrapnel wound. Enterprises, 2 educational institutions, 4 private houses, trucks and a gas pipeline were damaged.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region several times mostly with drones, they also fired with artillery, targeting the regional center, Marhanetsk and Pokrovske communities. A fire broke out, the infrastructure, an administrative building, a hairdresser, cars and a power line were damaged.

Vinnytsia oblast

Mykhailo Tkachuk, a serviceman of the 57th brigade from Dzhulin community in Vinnytsia oblast, returned from russian captivity. He went missing on May 14, 2024 during the fighting in Kharkiv oblast. For more than a year, his family fought for his return – and on June 19, 2025, it became known: Mykhailo is alive and free.

Kirovohrad oblast

On June 20, a resident of the village of Oleksandrivka, Kirovohrad oblast, Mykola Solonko, was released from russian captivity. He was in captivity since 2022. 59-year-old Mykola Solonko fought as part of the 56th separate motorized infantry brigade of Mariupol.

Poltava oblast

Serhii Antoniuk from Khorol, Poltava oblast, is one of the prisoners of war who returned to Ukraine as part of the next stage of the exchange on June 19. The 42-year-old soldier was in russian captivity for almost three years.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 19 June, the occupiers carried out 332 attacks on 11 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy conducted 9 airstrikes on Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Staroukrainka, and Charivne. 201 UAVs of various modifications (mostly FPV) attacked Novoiakovlivka, Stepnohirsk, Lobkove, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. Seven MLRS strikes hit Lobkove, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Shcherbaky, and Novodanylivka. There were 115 artillery strikes at Lobkove, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, and Charivne. Seventeen reports were received regarding damage to private houses, apartments, vehicles, and infrastructure facilities.

As of 4:00 pm on 20 June, Ukrainian defenders repelled two enemy attacks near Novoandriivka towards Orikhiv.

There is no electricity supply in some areas of the temporarily occupied territory of Zaporizhzhia oblast. The occupation authorities reported a drone attack on one of the energy facilities. According to the so-called governor of Zaporizhzhia oblast, Balytskyi, there was a power outage in the occupied territories of Melitopol, Pryazovske, Prymorsk, and Chernihivka due to a drone strike on an energy facility. Electricity was reportedly restored across the entire temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia oblast. According to Petro Andriushchenko, Head of the Center for the Occupation Study, there were explosions in the occupied Melitopol on the night of 20 June. As a result, the city lost power.

Mykolaiv oblast

On 19 June, the enemy carried out an artillery strike and launched two FPV drone attacks on Kutsurub community. As a result of the shelling, two private houses and outbuildings were damaged in the village of Dmytrivka. The russians also attacked the waters near the city of Ochakiv with an FPV drone yesterday. No casualties were reported.

As part of another prisoner exchange between Ukraine and russia on 19 June, 2025, marines from Mykolaiv returned home. According to the 36th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Bilynskyi, those released were severely wounded and seriously ill soldiers—defenders of Mariupol who had been in captivity for over three years. The servicemen now face a period of treatment and recovery.

Odesa oblast

On 19 June, the enemy launched a massive strike on Odesa using attack drones. As a result of the russian overnight strike, one person was killed and 14 injured, including three rescuers. According to the State Emergency Service, more than ten fires broke out across various locations in the city. During the night attack on Odesa, one of the buildings of the “Odesa Polytechnic” university was damaged, as well as the infrastructure of the National University “Odesa Law Academy” and Odesa National Technological University.

As of 6:00 am on 20 June, one enemy carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles was in the Black Sea with a total salvo of up to 6 missiles. There were two enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea.

Over the past day, nine vessels serving russian interests passed through the Kerch Strait into the Black Sea, and another seven ships entered the Sea of Azov.

Kherson oblast

At approximately 5:00 pm on 20 June, russian forces attacked a resident of Bilozerka with a drone. He sustained a blast and craniocerebral injury, a concussion, and shrapnel wounds to the chest and forearm.

A local was injured due to an explosive detonation in Dniprovskyi district of Bilozerka community. A 64-year-old man picked up a drone that exploded. As a result, he suffered a blast injury and a foot amputation.

At around 11:40 am, russian occupiers shelled Bilozerka with artillery. One of the shells hit a household yard, injuring a 77-year-old woman with a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to the arm.

Today, russian troops attacked a woman in Dariivka with a drone. She sustained a blast injury, a concussion, and shrapnel wounds to her legs.

On 19 June, the enemy shelled Bilozerka, Beryslav, Dariivka, Inhulets, Zorivka, Novovorontsovka, Osokorivka, Stanislav, Novokairy, Mykolaivka, Burhunka, Olhivka, Shyroka Balka, Kachkarivka, Chornobaivka, Sadove, Kizomys, Antonivka, Yantarne, Sofiivka, Berehove, Veletenske, Romashkove, Honcharne, Prydniprovske, Zymivnyk, Novooleksandrivka, Shliakhove, Vesele, Dudchany, Ivanivka, Kozatske, Mylove, Tiahynka, and the city of Kherson. As a result of the attacks, 17 private homes, farm buildings, a bus, and private vehicles were damaged. Eleven people were injured due to russian aggression.

Police evacuated a couple from the frontline village of Novooleksandrivka. A 59-year-old man and his 51-year-old wife required treatment and placement in a medical facility. Police officers assisted the couple in gathering their belongings and quickly evacuated them in an armored vehicle to a safer location, where they were handed over to relatives.

As of 8 am on 20 June, the enemy units made one attempt to advance on the Prydniprovskyi front, which was unsuccessful. Over the past day, enemy losses amounted to 21 occupiers, 9 artillery systems, 9 vehicles and armored units, 3 tanks, 3 reconnaissance UAVs, 4 motorcycles, 2 boats, and 1 electronic warfare system. Additionally, 22 shelters and dugouts, 4 communication antennas, and 1 field ammunition storage site were destroyed.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

In Volyn, families of fallen Heroes were awarded state awards. According to the Decrees of the President of Ukraine, the III degree For Courage Order (posthumously) was awarded to Serhii Koshil, Anatolii Balytskyi, Dmytro Yakoviak and Valentyn Yaroschuk.

Zakarpattia oblast

‘Yours’ spaces for children will be opened in the oblast as part of the joint project of the OSCE and the National Social Service. In these centers, children affected by the war will be able to receive free psychosocial assistance, and their parents will be able to receive consultation and legal support.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The 42nd Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received 10 DJI Matrice 4T quadcopters worth almost UAH 2m. The Military Unit A1807 received 2 thermal imagers and 4 tablets worth UAH 158,00. All equipment was purchased with funds from the regional budget within the framework of programs to support the military formations of the region.

Lviv oblast

On the territory of the Dashava Lyceum of Strii community, commemorative banners with portraits of defenders who were graduates of this educational institution were consecrated. The event was attended by relatives of the Heroes, representatives of local authorities, the educational institution, and fellow villagers.

Pidberiztsivska community donated tires and rims worth UAH 17,000 to the defenders.

A festival dedicated to Children’s Day was held in Murovane. Over UAH 150,000 was raised.

Lyceum #75 named after Lesia Ukrainka donated UAH 75,000 for a thermal imager for the 45th Rifle Regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine, of which UAH 45,000 was a donation from students of grade 3-B.

Rivne oblast

Rivne oblast has entered the TOP-5 regions in blood donation. Every year the number of people willing to help medics is increasing, but the need is also growing. In this incomplete year alone, 5,000 new donors joined the campaign.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported that  veterans from Ternopil joined a trial training in arm wrestling.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

For 150 consecutive weeks, families in Khmelnytskyi have been gathering for the “Return Heroes from Captivity, Find the Missing” rally, advocating for the return of their loved ones who are prisoners of war or missing in action.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA reported that this year, local budgets in Chernivtsi oblast have allocated over UAH 12m for rehabilitation and recreation of children from vulnerable categories.
