War in Ukraine today: latest news, 19 May, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 816th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

At present, the dynamics of combat clashes is preserved. On 19 May, 105 combat clashes took place. 

The aggressor continues to shell the border areas of Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts with artillery. In addition to the settlements that have been subjected to artillery shelling, Luhivka, Druzhba, and Bilopillia were added. 

The defense forces flexibly respond to the occupiers’ actions and take all necessary measures to deplete the offensive potential of russian troops.

Towards Kharkiv, the occupiers are attacking units of the Defense Forces with the support of aviation, striking with guided aerial bombs. There were 11 clashes, four of which are still ongoing.  

Towards Kharkiv, during the current week, the losses of the russian occupiers amounted to 1572 personnel and 263 units of weapons and military equipment. In particular, 8 tanks, 13 armoured combat vehicles, 12 artillery systems, 1 air defense system, 75 UAVs, 66 cars and 12 units of special equipment of the enemy were destroyed. In addition, nine tanks, 11 armoured combat vehicles, 21 artillery systems, 32 cars and three units of special equipment of the enemy were damaged.

Towards Kupiansk, the Defense Forces repelled 10 enemy attacks near Synkivka, Ivanivka, Berestove and Stelmakhivka. Two more are ongoing. 

Towards Siversk,  22 enemy attacks were repelled in the vicinities of Bilohorivka, Verkhnokamianske, Rozdolivka and Ivano-Dariivka. Another combat clash continues. Ukrainian soldiers are holding the line and preventing the enemy from realizing its aggressive intentions. 

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers continue to put pressure, trying to break through Ukrainian defences 25 times. Seven clashes out of the total number of battles in this direction are still ongoing. 

Towards Kramatorsk and the Dnipro river area, the intensity of enemy attacks slightly decreased in the evening. One combat clash is still ongoing in each of the directions. 

In other directions, there are no significant changes. 

Ukrainian defenders continue to courageously restrain the enemy and inflict maximum losses on them in manpower and equipment.

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine informs that since the beginning of 2024,  24 russian planes and 2 helicopters have been shot down. It is also known that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have destroyed 709 russian aircraft. 

Director Oleksandr Babenko says that the Ukrainian manufacturer of FPV drones Vyrii has started mass production of attack drones with a target guidance system. The main limiting factor for production is the supply of components.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Towards Kharkiv, as of 7:00pm, 4 clashes continue. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 8 combat clashes took place there during the day. The occupiers are attacking Ukrainian units with the support of aviation, striking with guided aerial bombs. There were 11 clashes. During the week, the Russians lost 1572 soldiers and 263 units of weapons and military equipment in the area. Towards Kupiansk, the Defense Forces repelled 10 russian attacks near Synkivka, Ivanivka, Berestove and Stelmakhivka. Two more clashes continue.

On May 18-19, the air-raid alert in Kharkiv was the longest since the beginning of the full-scale invasion and lasted 18 hours and 1 minute.

Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reports that in the afternoon, the occupiers hit Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv, preliminarily with KABs. They hit with two rockets, targeting the cemetery, and the recreational area. There was a hit on the ground near the football field. One woman suffered an acute stress reaction as a result of the stroke. The cemetery where the second shell hit is located in Kyiv district of Kharkiv. Graves and tombstones were damaged at the cemetery. The façade of a gas station near the cemetery was also damaged, and there is no information about the wounded.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of the Regional Military Administration, informs that as a result of hits on Mala Danylivka community, 6 people were killed. A pregnant woman was among the dead. Among the wounded are 9 people in serious condition. An 8-year-old girl is in a stable condition. A total of 28 people were wounded. A 68-year-old civilian man died in the hospital.

Serhii Bolvinov, Head of the Investigative Department of Kharkiv Regional Police, reports that of the six dead in Cherkaska Lozova, three have now been identified using documents. russia struck a double blow: the second was 15-20 minutes after the first.

The russians struck Kupiansk region, there were dead and wounded. The press service of the regional prosecutor’s office reported that the number of wounded increased to 10 people: six civilians were injured in Novoosynove, including four women and two men. In Kivsharivka, one woman and three men were injured.

The day before, at 2:59pm, a KAB hit Shevchenkivskyi district of Kharkiv. 23 private houses, 3 cars, 3 garages and a power line were damaged. 6 people were injured, including 2 children aged 13 and 16.

At 3:12pm, an open area on the outskirts of Kharkiv was hit. There were no casualties. 

On May 18, at 11:58pm, a KAB shelled the open area of the village of Ruski Tyshky, Kharkiv region. There were no casualties. 

At 6:30pm, a house was on fire as a result of UAV shelling in the village of Prykolotne, Kupiansk region.

At 1:00pm, as a result of the shelling of Vovchansk, a private house was damaged and a 55-year-old man injured.

At 2:00pm, a private house was damaged due to shelling in the village of Lyptsi, Kharkiv oblast.

At 1:55pm, a private house, a gas pipeline and power lines were damaged in the village of Kurylivka, Kupiansk region. 

At 1:00 pm, a 60-year-old man was injured as a result of shelling in the village of Ukrainske, Chuhuiv region. 

At 11:00am, a 60-year-old woman was killed and two women and one man injured as a result of the shelling of Vovchansk.

Towards Kharkiv, 12 combat clashes took place. Ukrainian soldiers repelled 6 attacks south of the settlements of Hlyboke and Lukiantsi. The enemy continues to try to break through the defences of Ukrainian units towards Zelene, trying to capture Vovchansk. The russian occupiers are using aircraft for airstrikes. The defense forces are trying to push the enemy towards the settlement of Hlyboke and in the area of Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, the number of combat clashes per day increased to 11. The defense forces successfully repelled enemy attacks in the vicinity of Synkivka, Ivanivka, and Berestove.

A total of 10314 people were evacuated from Chuhuiv, Kharkiv, and Bohodukhiv regions.

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 68 occupiers and seven units of military equipment were eliminated towards Pokrovsk.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman for the Khortytsia Joint Task Force, informs that the Russian army is trying to advance and push back Ukrainian units across the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal, but the Defense Forces do not allow them to do so.

Referring to Anastasia Medviedieva, Spokeswoman for the regional prosecutor’s office, in the afternoon, the russian army shelled the village of Pivnichne with probably two guided aerial bombs. As a result of the shelling, a man and a woman were injured.

Roman Padun, Head of Kurakhove City Military Administration, says that the russian army shelled the city of Kurakhove 4 times. As a result of these shellings, there were no injuries or fatalities.

Operational situation in the region as of the morning of 19 May:

Pokrovsk region. In Marinka community, Paraskoviivka, Zoriane and Oleksandropil were shelled with artillery. In Kurakhivka, 1 person was killed and a house damaged. In Vesele, Hrodivka community, a person was injured and 4 houses damaged.

Kramatorsk region. In Zarichne, Lyman community, two private houses were damaged again. The outskirts of Kostiantynivka and Sloviansk communities are under fire.

Bakhmut region. In Chasiv Yar community, 9 private houses and 4 high-rise buildings were damaged. A house was damaged in Siversk.

In just one day, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 7 times. 213 people, including 21 children, were evacuated from the front line.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, informs that over the past day, russians killed 1 resident of Donetsk oblast in Kurakhivka. Another person in the region was injured.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy shelled every de-occupied village where people remain. Thus, there were about 30 explosions in Nevske and Novoliubivka. Three houses and administrative buildings were destroyed. Logistics routes around were massively shelled. Makiivka was hit from a helicopter and a Grad multiple rocket launcher.

Kuzemivka and Stelmakhivka also came under artillery and mortar fire.

During the day, the enemy attacked towards Kupiansk and Lyman. In total, 17 combat clashes took place there.

The so-called “government of the luhansk people’s republic” decided to deprive the owners of destroyed housing of hope for compensation if it had already been repaired in any way by 2023. That is, even in case of repeated damage, there is nothing to expect from the occupation authorities. Also, those who restore a house or apartment at their own expense or with the help of humanitarian missions will not be entitled to receive money or building materials.

Referring to Artem Lysohor, Head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, a number of propaganda activities continue in the educational institutions of the occupied Luhansk oblast. In the schools of Novopskov region, conversations were organized during class hours on the rules of conduct during the seizure and detention of hostages.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Ruslan Kravchenko, head of Kyiv RMA, informed that at night the enemy once again tried to attack Kyiv oblast with kamikaze drones. Air defence forces were on alert. All the targets were destroyed outside the settlements. There were no hits to residential or critical infrastructure. There were no casualties.

Kyiv’s ASCs have started updating the data of people liable for military service. 850 people used the service on the first day and 739 of them received confirmation documents. The system worked smoothly and there were no problems with the procedure, which lasted no more than 10 minutes.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko reported that the capital’s community had sent aid to the defenders of Ukraine towards Kharkiv. The soldiers of the 92nd Brigade received more than 50 UAVs purchased at the expense of the budget. The State Border Guard Service received 100 FPV drones. The 116th Separate Mechanised Brigade and the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine’s ARTAN special unit also received 100 drones.

On 18 May, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard held a tactical medicine training for women and girls in Borodianka village. The training consisted of a lecture and tactical exercises. The girls were taught by trainer Maria Horobets, a military volunteer with experience in tactical medicine and first aid training for military and civilians.

On the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska visited Bykivnia Graves National Historical and Memorial Reserve. At the mass grave and the memorial sign of Polish burials, they paid tribute to the people killed by the totalitarian Soviet regime. It was Bykivnia Forest near Kyiv that was the place, where 1937-1941 the people secretly shot by the NKVD in Kyiv prisons were buried. It is the largest burial place in Ukraine for victims of mass political repression.

Zhytomyr oblast

Berdychiv City Hospital is preparing to open a rehabilitation unit. At the session of the City Council, the deputies voted to allocate UAH 5m from the local budget to put this unit into operation. They plan to repair the premises and purchase equipment.

Bishop Paisiy of the Zhytomyr-Ovruch Diocese of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine reported that the religious community in Mokre village, Zviahel region, joined the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. After a general meeting, the religious community decided to withdraw from subordination to moscow Patriarchate and join the Orthodox Church of Ukraine without its rector, who remained loyal to the moscow Patriarch. 

Sumy oblast

According to a report by Sumy Regional Prosecutor’s Office, at around 10:00am, the russian army fired mortars at the civilian infrastructure of Khotyn community in Sumy oblast. As a result of the attack, a 64-year-old man sustained shrapnel wounds and was hospitalised.

At night and in the morning of 19 May, russians shelled border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast nine times. There were 21 attacks from various types of weapons. Khotin, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Esman and Seredyna-Buda communities were shelled.

The RMA reported that the regional air defence forces destroyed an enemy Shahed UAV in the sky over Sumy oblast on the night of 19 May. 

The RMA also informed that over the past day, russians fired 46 times at Sumy oblast. There were 284 explosions – attacks from mortars, rocket and cannon artillery, AGS grenade launchers, FPV drones, and explosive devices dropped from UAVs. 10 communities in the region were shelled: Mykolayivka, Khotyn, Yunakivka, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Sloboda, Esman, Shalyhine, and Seredyna-Buda. 

The prosecutor’s office of Sumy oblast informed that as a result of one of the mortar attacks on Esman community on 18 May, a local resident was wounded in his own yard. He was hospitalised with shrapnel wounds. In total, there were 19 mortar attacks, 25 artillery attacks and small arms fire on the community’s territory during the day.

Oleksiy Drozdenko, Head of Sumy MVA, announced that two more mobile shelters were installed in Sumy. These modular shelters will protect people from blast waves and debris. Each is designed for 20 people. The benefactors will deliver 8 more shelters to Sumy.

This week, a mobile safety classroom taught children the basic rules of life safety in the centre of Sumy. According to Sumy Regional State Emergency Service, rescuers also held similar educational events in Romny, Hlukhov and Krolevets.

Chernihiv oblast

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine informed that russian troops attacked 11 border villages in Chernihiv oblast using various types of weapons. There were 65 explosions – attacks from mortars, cannon and rocket artillery, and FPV drones. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk and Horodnia communities were under enemy fire. 

According to the SBGSU report, an outbuilding and a car were damaged near Hremiach village as a result of russian shelling on the territory of Novhorod-Siverskyi community. A two-storey apartment building and a kindergarten building were destroyed as a result of shelling of Semenivka community in Kuty-2. A civilian man was wounded.

Chernihiv Regional Employment Centre reported that more than 4,000 referrals for community service under the Army of Recovery programme were made to the unemployed in Chernihiv oblast in January-April 2024. This is three times more than in the same period last year.

Fifteen horses from Derhachi village, Kharkiv oblast, were evacuated to Didivtsi village. These are academic and sports horses of Kharkiv State Biotechnology University. This decision was made due to the deteriorating security situation – the horses were stressed due to enemy attacks and could not be released and grazed. A team of five people came with the horses. Mykola Petrushko, Head of the university’s equestrian sports complex, explained that this was the first batch of animals, with a total list being 35 horses.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that occupiers fired 3 times from artillery at Nikopol region at night. They launched fifteen shells at the region’s centre, Pokrovsk and Chervonohryhorivka communities. A sanatorium, 7 private houses, 2 outbuildings, a scooter, a gas pipeline and a power line were damaged.

During the day, the occupiers fired 16 times at Nikopol region. They launched 14 drones and fired twice from artillery. Nikopol, Marhanets and Myrove communities were attacked. A multi-storey building, an enterprise, and infrastructure facilities were damaged. A 55-year-old woman was injured. Russian terrorists also attacked Kryvyi Rih region. They launched a rocket and shelled it with artillery. A fire broke out at an enterprise in Novomoskovsk region due to the fall of the downed rocket fragments, which was quickly extinguished.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​ Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, reported that air defense forces in Vinnytsia oblast destroyed russian Shahed at night. In a week, it became known that 13 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were killed. 

In Vinnytsia oblast, 8 students are making two types of drones for the defense forces at the front: bombers and kamikaze.

Poltava oblast

Ihor Yashchenko, a resident of Shcherbanivka community, started his own business after demobilization. He received a business grant from the Ukrainian Veterans Fund of the Ministry of Veterans. For the money provided, they created a space for the whole family called the Ministry of Family.

A charity race was organized in Poltava’s Pryrechnyi Park. The participants covered a distance of five kilometers. When registering his business, he donated to the needs of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade’s combat units. The total amount raised was almost UAH 59,000.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of RMA, reported that 2 Shahed drones were shot down in the sky over Cherkasy oblast during the night.

An action in support of prisoners of war was held in Cherkasy. Concerned citizens, military families, public figures and volunteers came out with flags and posters to remind them of the soldiers who are now in captivity. A joint prayer service was also held for the fallen soldiers.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

On 18 May, occupiers struck Zaporizhzhia oblast 459 times. Seven settlements were under enemy fire. Eight reports of housing destruction were received. One woman was injured during an enemy attack in Vasylivka region

As reported by Zaporizhzhia RMA, 243 enemy UAVs attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka, and Novoandriivka. Additionally, Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne were hit by 13 MLRS shelling, while Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne, Malynivka, and Stepnohirsk were subjected to 203 artillery shelling.

The State Border Guard Service and the National Guard of Ukraine reported that aerial reconnaissance units of the 23rd Separate Brigade “Khortytsia” together with border guards, struck a russian 57mm anti-aircraft gun S-60. The well-camouflaged target was hit using combat drones.

The State Grain Operator, created in the occupied part of Zaporizhzhia oblast, is essentially a monopoly engaged in illegal exports of Zaporizhzhia crops to russia, other occupied territories, and abroad. They employ all the components of ” russian-style business”, including fake documents, dummy companies, and buyers from offshore zones.

Mykolaiv oblast

During the night of 19 May, air defense forces were engaged in combat operations in Mykolaiv oblast. Yesterday, at 09:17, the enemy shelled the waters of Ochakiv community with artillery. At 14:30, the russians attacked Dmytrivka village in Kutsurub community with an FPV drone-kamikaze. According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, a private house was hit.

Odesa oblast

During the night of 19 May, the enemy army attacked the southern regions with Shahed-131/136 kamikaze drones. Intense combat operations of the air defense forces lasted for over six hours. The drones were launched from different directions as the occupiers attempted to exhaust the air defense system. Southern air defense forces destroyed 24 barrage munitions, with 20 over Odesa oblast, 3 in Kherson oblast, and 1 in Mykolaiv oblast.

According to military sources, an administrative building is damaged in Odesa oblast. Also the debris fell into a courtyard in a residential area in Odesa city.

This morning the enemy launched a reconnaissance drone Orlan-10 towards Odesa oblast. It was subsequently destroyed by the air defense forces.

According to the South Operational Command, Ukrainian defenders destroyed all 37 Shahed drones out of the 37 launched by the occupiers during the night of 19 May. 

Kherson oblast

Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that russian occupiers used a drone to drop an explosive device on the city of Beryslav. As a result of the attack, at least five civilians were injured.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration, says that on 18 May, russian military personnel dropped an explosive device from a drone on two residents of Stanislaviv. A man died from the injuries sustained, and a woman was also injured. As a result of the enemy’s attack on Kindeika, a man who was on the street at the time suffered explosive and cranial-cerebral injuries, fragmentation wounds to the chest, and a concussion. 

A power transmission line was damaged as a result of russian attacks on 19 May. Sukhanove, Chervonyi Yar, Kostyrka, Urozhaine, Novoraisk, Koshary, Zamozhne, Stepne, and Maksyma Horkoho were left without electricity.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that four children were evacuated from the temporarily occupied community in Kherson oblast. These are three siblings and a little sister, aged two to twelve. Thanks to the cooperation of parents with the organization Save Ukraine, the children are now on Ukrainian-controlled territory under the care of doctors and psychologists. 

A Dutch philanthropist donated 20 generators for the residents of Beryslav community. According to the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, as of 19 May, power outages were observed in 45 settlements in Kherson oblast.

Two more paintings have been added to the list of recognized works of art from Kherson Art Museum stolen by russian occupiers. These are “Agit Train Headquarters ‘Komsomolska Pravda'” by Gedrus Kazimerenas (1980, canvas, oil) and “Autumn Flowers” by Heorhii Kurnakov (1966, canvas, oil). Museum experts have already identified 108 works of art stolen by the russian occupation authorities from the Kherson Art Museum in 2022, and the total number of illegally exported exhibits exceeds 10,000 museum items. 107 works are located in occupied Crimea, in the Central Museum of Tavrida, the precise whereabouts of one work are unknown, but there is confirmation from the occupiers that the masterpiece is in their hands.

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent 10 DJI Mavic 3 Fly More Combos, 5 DJI Mavic 3T quadcopters and 4 remote Avenger antennas to the 3rd Battalion of the 92nd Assault Brigade’s Platoon of Shock UAVs for protecting Kharkiv oblast.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 30 packages of necessary things for children under 1 year old, 50 bags with grocery sets and 50 packages with hygiene kits. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (2,250 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help eV and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Сomputer equipment worth over UAH 115,000 was sent to the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade thanks to the regional budget within the framework of two targeted programs of support for the military formations of Prykarpattia.

The regional project for the recovery of families of fallen defenders Care For The Hero’s Family is ongoing. In its new season, almost half a hundred families with children visited the Carpathian recreation complexes. These are almost 120 people in total.

Lviv oblast

Guardsmen from Lviv oblast, Yaroslav Bilovus, Vsevolod Bliznichenko and Ilia Pelikh, were posthumously awarded the III degree For Courage orders. Orders were handed over to families of fallen defenders.

On the facade of Lviv Polytechnic National University College, Zolochiv region, a memorial plaque was installed in memory of Bohdan Murin, fallen grenade launcher and its graduate, who were killed in the russian-Ukrainian war. He was killed on 28 July 2022 near the settlement of Prudianka, Kharkiv oblast. Bohdan Murin was posthumously awarded the III degree For Courage Order by the President of Ukraine.

A film about Colonel Oleh Babii was shown in Lviv school, where Hero studied. The film shows the identity of the intelligence officer, his career in the service and the last special operation. The defender led a group that destroyed three Tu-22M3 bombers in russia. He is known for 9 successful exits to the rear of the enemy, 12 special measures to organise and ensure the movement of resistance in the temporarily occupied territories. He also discovered about 70 strategic objects of the enemy.

Rivne oblast

Invincibility Centers in Rivne, which were created on the basis of tents, will be eliminated. They can be reinstalled within two hours in the event of an emergency.

Ternopil oblast

A charity sports race Mitts. Nature. Victory took place in Ternopil to unite athletes from many oblasts of the country and raise funds for equipment for the military.

Ternopil City Council reported that the community sent 5 FPV drones to the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The RMA reported that a meeting of the working group of the Temporary Special Commission of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on protection of property and non-property rights of IDPs affected by the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine was held in Khmelnytskyi.

Chernivtsi oblast

Hertsaiv community reported that in the village of Kulikivka, a memorial plaque was installed and consecrated in honour of Ivan Buliha, fallen Hero. Already the 4th resident of this small village was killed in action defending Ukraine.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The Ministry of Defense of Germany requested €3.8bn from the government to support Ukraine. This is due to the fact that almost all of the allocated €7.1bn has been used, and only €300m is left for the purchase of new weapons and ammunition. Unanticipated expenses in the budget must be submitted for approval to the German parliament in June.

Grant Shapps, Minister of Defense of Great Britain, stated that the country called on Germany to send Taurus missiles to Ukraine and allow them to strike Crimea. He reminded that Britain was the 1st to allow Ukraine to use the provided weapons for attacks on Crimea. Then, he said, other countries followed Britain’s example.
