It has been the 1061 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

Since the beginning of the day, there have been 125 combat engagements on the front line. Our defenders are stopping the enemy, holding the line, and disrupting Russian plans.

Throughout the day, the enemy launched artillery strikes from Russian territory on the areas of Prohres, Romanivka, Hrabovske, and Pokrovka in Sumy Oblast; Lemishchyne in Kharkiv Oblast; and Leonivka, Medvedivka, and Berilivka in Chernihiv Oblast. Uncontrolled aviation rocket strikes targeted Oleksandrivka in Sumy Oblast and Hremyach in Chernihiv Oblast.

In the Kharkiv direction, with the support of assault aviation, the enemy attempted twice, unsuccessfully, to attack the Defense Forces’ positions near Vovchansk and also launched an airstrike near Vovchanski Khutory.

In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy tried to advance toward our positions seven times in the areas of Stroivka, Pishchane, Kolisnykivka, Zahryzove, and Lozova. Four attacks were successfully repelled, and three combat engagements are ongoing.

In the Lyman direction, there were 14 engagements near Novoyehorivka, Nadiia, Novoserhiyivka, Novosadove, Zarichne, Kolodiazy, Zelena Dolyna, Terny, and the Serebrianske Forestry. Seven engagements are still underway.

In the Siversk direction, the enemy conducted offensive operations near Ivano-Daryivka and Verkhniokamyanske, both of which were successfully repelled by our defenders.

In the Kramatorsk direction, the enemy attacked seven times near Chasiv Yar and Bila Hora. Currently, five combat engagements are ongoing.

In the Toretsk direction, the invaders attacked 17 times near Toretsk, Dyliivka, and Shcherbynivka. Eleven attacks were successfully repelled, and six engagements are ongoing.

High enemy activity persists in the Pokrovsk direction, with 62 engagements of varying intensity today near settlements including Zelene Pole, Oleksandropil, Vodyane Druhe, Yelyzavetivka, Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Myrnohrad, Pokrovsk, Zvirove, Shevchenko, Udachne, Uspenivka, Kotlyne, Nadiivka, Novotroitske, Novoandriivka, Slovyanka, Petropavlivka, Andriivka, Dachne, Ulakly, and Yantarne. Fifteen combat engagements are ongoing.

In the Novopavlivka direction, the aggressor attacked 12 times near Kostiantynopol and Velyka Novosilka. Currently, four engagements are ongoing. The enemy also launched an airstrike with uncontrolled rockets on Novopil.

In the Hulyaipole, Orikhiv, and Prydniprovske directions, the enemy did not conduct active operations.

In the Kursk direction, Ukrainian defenders are repelling an enemy attack, with four combat engagements recorded so far. The enemy launched two airstrikes using guided bombs on settlements and Defense Forces’ positions and carried out 196 artillery strikes, including five using multiple launch rocket systems.

Ukrainian forces are exhausting the enemy along the entire front line and in the rear.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces shot down 33 missiles, 311 attack drones, and 136 additional drones used in daily strikes on infrastructure, preventing them from reaching their targets. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that, in a week, Russia deployed about 550 attack drones, nearly 60 missiles of various types, and over 660 aerial bombs.

A decree was signed to enforce a National Security and Defense Council decision imposing sanctions on propagandists working for Russia, as announced by President Zelenskyy. Additionally, several pro-Russian figures were stripped of state awards.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline Update

During the day, Russian forces carried out artillery strikes in the Lemishchyne area, according to the General Staff.

  • Kharkiv Direction: With air support, the enemy launched two unsuccessful assaults near Vovchansk and carried out an airstrike near Vovchanski Khutory.
  • Kupiansk Direction: The occupiers attempted to advance seven times near Stroivka, Pishchane, Kolisnykivka, Zahrizove, and Lozova. Four attacks were successfully repelled, while three clashes continued as of 4:00 PM.
  • On the previous day, six enemy assaults on Ukrainian positions near Vovchansk were recorded.

Ukrainian Defense Forces successfully resisted enemy actions near Petropavlivka, Lozova, and Pishchane on the Kupiansk axis, where nine enemy attacks occurred in a single day.

  • Drone Post on the Frontlines: The 57th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, operating near Vovchansk, has been running a drone postal service since summer 2024. It delivers parcels to soldiers at forward positions. Using improvised equipment, the brigade manages to ship up to 25 packages daily.

Shelling Incidents

  • Basove, Zolochivska Community: A 69-year-old man was injured while cycling at 5:00 PM after triggering an explosive device, sustaining moderate injuries.
  • Constantinivka & Rosokhovate, Zolochivska Community: Russian forces used guided aerial bombs (KABs) around 2:20 PM. The bombs struck open areas; no casualties or damage were reported.
  • Kharkiv Region:
    • Chuhuiv District, Staryi Saltivska TG, Khotimlia (3:04 AM): A Russian strike caused a fire and damaged residential buildings.
    • Kharkiv District, Vysochynska TG, Vysokyi (6:11 PM): An Iskander-M missile hit a three-story building, damaging private properties, outbuildings, and vehicles. An 86-year-old woman experienced acute stress.
    • Izium District, Borivska TG (5:08 PM): Shelling damaged non-residential infrastructure.
    • Kupiansk District, Kurylivka (3:49 PM): A Molniya drone strike damaged a private house.
    • Izium District, Borshchivka (12:33 PM): Missile debris from an intercepted rocket landed in the area, causing no injuries.
    • Bohodukhiv District, Ivashky (9:00 AM): Shelling damaged a house, a car, and a motorcycle.

Additional Information

  • Borivska Community: The situation remains tense, with ongoing evacuations. According to the head of the local military administration, Oleksandr Tertyshnyi, only 10% of the pre-war population remains in the community.

Donetsk oblast

Shelling Incidents

  • Pokrovsk: Russian forces struck the city, resulting in one fatality and one injury, according to Anastasiia Medvedieva, spokesperson for the Donetsk prosecutor’s office.
  • Frontline and Residential Areas: Over the past day, Russian troops launched 3,400 strikes, targeting both the frontline and civilian sectors. Five settlements were affected:
    • Rodynske, Toretsk, Kurtivka, Mykolaivka, Podilske: A total of nine civilian structures were damaged, including eight residential buildings.
  • Mykolaivka, Kostiantynivska Community: Russian artillery fire claimed the life of a civilian and damaged three private homes.
  • Kurtivka: Bombing with FAB-250 munitions caused significant destruction, damaging three houses.
  • Podilske: Two private homes were destroyed by the same type of bombing.
  • Rodynske: A civilian car was targeted by a drone attack. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

Additional Information

  • Mariupol Water Supply: In occupied Mariupol, water rationing schedules might be introduced as early as next week. Petro Andriushchenko, head of the “Occupation Study Center” project, reported that the Starokrymske reservoir, previously a reserve source, is running critically low and was not designed to supply the entire city.

Luhansk oblast

Frontline Updates

  • Drone Activity Surge: Russian forces deployed 161 drones in the area, a significant increase compared to previous days, according to Artem Lysohor, head of the Luhansk Regional Military Administration.
  • Artillery Fire: Enemy artillery targeted Ukrainian positions.
  • Assault Attempts: Russian troops launched attacks in the areas of Novoyehorivka, Novolyubivka, and unsuccessfully attempted an assault in Bilohorivka.

Occupied Territories

  • Wage Debts in “LNR”: The occupation authorities owe over 1 billion Russian rubles in unpaid wages to doctors, teachers, and miners for the years 2014-2015.
  • Healthcare Crisis in Sievierodonetsk:
    • Only one therapist remains in the city, working three half-days a week.
    • Due to the lack of internet, there is no electronic queue system, and phone scheduling is impossible due to the absence of communication services.
    • Residents must join a physical queue, which begins forming as early as 5:00 AM, immediately after the end of the curfew.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, emergency rescue operations have been completed in Shevchenko district of Kyiv at the site of the missile strike that resulted in three fatalities and three injuries. The announcement was made on the evening of 18 January.

The mine action operator UDS has completed the demining of the first area within the framework of the state program for compensation for the demining of agricultural lands. This concerns lands with a total area of ​​487 hectares in Kyiv oblast. The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine reported that in total, 623kg of war remnants were removed. 78 sappers and 5 paramedics were involved in the process using special equipment.

According to the World Monuments Fund (WMF), Kyiv’s Teacher’s House has been listed among 25 sites worldwide that are at risk of disappearing. The building suffered serious damage as a result of a missile attack in 2022.

The Ukrainian Women’s Guard held a one-day tactical medicine course in Kyiv as part of the “Women for Women” project. At the Obolon Vcentri HUB, participants learned essential life-saving skills that can prove crucial in wartime and emergency situations. The project is implemented with technical support from UN Women in Ukraine and funded by the United Nations Women’s Peace and Humanitarian Fund (WPHF).

On 18 January, a peaceful rally titled “They Are Not Home Yet” was held in Kyiv to support missing and captive servicemen. Several thousand people gathered on Maidan Nezalezhnosti. Relatives, friends, and supporters came with photographs, brigade flags, and placards.

Kyiv City State Administration informed that nearly 8,500 users have registered on the “Portal for Defenders” during its nine months of operation. In that time, users have submitted over 1,600 online applications. The website provides 11 types of services, including annual, monthly, and one-off targeted financial assistance, prosthetics, psychological support, physical rehabilitation, and excursion services for defenders from Kyiv, their families, and the families of fallen defenders.

Zhytomyr oblast

During the enemy attack on Kyiv on 18 January, 25-year-old Vladyslav Kovalchuk from Korosten region lost his life. He was a security guard at “Louvre” business centre and died near Lukianivska metro station from multiple shrapnel wounds that proved fatal.

According to State Emergency Service, this week, bomb disposal experts in the oblast destroyed an explosive device found in Vyshevychi village, Zhytomyr region. Children discovered the artillery shell in a field. It was neutralised by a controlled detonation at a designated site.

Sumy oblast

 The regional military administration reported that on 19 January, anti-aircraft guns shot down 3 enemy UAVs of “Shahed” type in the sky over Sumy Oblast. Since the beginning of 2025, 154 enemy drones have been destroyed by the region’s air defense units.

The night in Sumy oblast passed without shelling.

On 18 January, russians carried out 41 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 63 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Yunakivka, and Seredyna-Buda communities.

As a result of FPV-drone attacks on the territory of Seredyna-Buda community (two explosions), a private residential house and a car were damaged. The enemy also shelled the community by mortars (four explosions).

The enemy carried out GAB strikes on Yunakivka and Khotin communities (1 explosion each).

The russians shelled Velyka Pysarivka community by FPV-drones (7 explosions), carried out mortar shelling (15 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (3 explosions).

In the territory of Krasnopillia community, the enemy dropped explosive devices from UAVs (14 explosions), carried out mortar shelling (1 explosion), and attacked by FPV-drones (2 explosions).

The Bilopillia community was under mortar fire (9 explosions), and the russians also dropped explosive devices from UAVs (2 explosions).

Chernihiv oblast

According to State Border Guard Service, throughout 18 January, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast. The enemy used mortars, barrel artillery, and UAVs, with a total of 12 explosions recorded.

Novhorod-Siverskyi community: two strikes with explosive devices dropped from a UAV near Krasnyi Khutir.

Semenivka community: four artillery strikes towards Naberezhne; five mortar strikes in the area of Zaliznyi Mist.

Snovsk community: one explosive device dropped from a UAV in  Kliusy.

Children from a large family received 13 bicycles from Chernihiv volunteers from the public organization “Eco City”. The philanthropists are providing free bicycles as part of the Bikes for Ukraine project.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that late in the evening and at night, the enemy attacked the settlements of Nikopol region. The occupiers shelled the area with Grad rocket launchers, artillery, and used a kamikaze drone. They targeted the region centre and the Marhanets community. An administrative building, an enterprise and a gas pipeline were damaged. During the day, the occupiers attacked the Marhanets community of Nikopol region four times. They fired from artillery and sent a kamikaze drone.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​During the week of 13-19 January, 18 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast were reported killed.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, the action “Do not be silent! Captivity Kills!”. The participants held placards: “Captivity kills”, “Bring the brave home”, “You are their hope for a free life”.

Poltava oblast

For almost a year, the search for Volodymyr Snitchuk, a soldier with the call sign “January” from Poltava region, who went to war from the first days of the full-scale invasion, continued. His body was identified through DNA testing. The soldier died in action.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that at night in Cherkasy oblast, defenders shot down a russian UAV. 

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the RMA, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine destroyed russian firing positions and personnel in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that the number of injured from the 18 January russian attack on Zaporizhzhia has risen to 12. Yesterday, one more person sought medical assistance.

On 18 January, russian forces launched 351 strikes on 13 settlements in the oblast. These included 2 missile strikes on Zaporizhzhia and 1 airstrike on Novodarivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

Mykhailo Morozov, Head of the preventive communications sector, stated that on 19 January, a weekly peaceful reminder action in support of prisoners of war and missing soldiers took place in Mykolaiv. The event was attended by 225 people.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, there are no russian ships in the Black or Azov Seas. In the Mediterranean Sea, 6 russian ships are present, including 2 equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles capable of launching up to 22 missiles. Within the day, 4 ships headed to the Black Sea through the Kerch Strait, with 2 continuing toward the Bosporus Strait. 6 ships entered the Azov Sea, 4 of which came from the Bosporus Strait.

Kherson oblast

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, informed that around 2pm, russian forces shelled Chervonyi Maiak by artillery, killing a 24-year-old man who was outdoors at the time.

According to the RMA, at approximately 9am, russian artillery struck Shliakhove village, damaging private houses. There were no casualties reported.

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, said that in Antonivka, a man stepped on an unknown explosive device, suffering severe injuries and currently receiving medical care. According to the RMA, he detonated a russian antipersonnel mine near a bus stop.

As reported by the police, they evacuated a 74-year-old woman from Beryslav. She was alone and urgently needed medical attention due to deteriorating health. Police transported her to safety and handed her over to doctors.

Based on the information provided by the RMA, a 51-year-old resident of Bilozirka, injured in a russian attack, sought medical help today. He sustained a blast injury, concussion and brain trauma and was hospitalized.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that 3 people were killed and 6 injured in russian shelling in Kherson oblast on 18 January. The russian forces attacked 31 settlements, damaging 17 private houses, a utility building and vehicles.

According to activists from the Yellow Ribbon resistance movement, in villages of the TOT in Kherson oblast, teachers are being forced to report children’s “political coordinates” to school principals. The school leaders then report non-compliance with occupation requirements to illegal village “heads”.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Platoon of the 2nd Mechanized Battalion of the same military unit received an EcoFlow DELTA 2 charging station, Starlink Gen3, and a DJI Mavic 3T Enterprise (Thermal) quadcopter from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 15 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old, 50 bags with grocery sets and 80 loaves of bread. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (850 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., the Hungarian Ecumenical Aid Service, Valentyn Stefano and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

A holiday was organized for the children of servicemen of the 10th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade Edelveis. The program included workshops and a performance. Animators worked. Gifts were also prepared for each child.

Lviv oblast

Andrii Moskalenko, First Deputy Mayor of Lviv, paid a working visit to Kharkiv. He toured the city, visiting the district most devastated by russian shelling – Pivchna Saltivka. He also worked with his Kharkiv colleagues on joint projects to attract international resources within the framework of the Side by Side: United Communities national program.

Dmytro Polyovyi, from Novorozdil community, was posthumously awarded with the 3rd degree For Courage Order. The defender was killed on 13 October 2023, while performing a combat mission near the village of Novoprokopivka, Zaporizhia oblast.

Rivne oblast

The award was received from General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, from Rivne oblast, with the call sign Jeep. The soldier is fighting in the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade, Commander of one of the Brigade’s Rifle Companies.

Ternopil oblast

As part of the Side by Side: United Communities project, Ternopil City Community visited Sumy. During the visit, they visited the places of the greatest destruction, learned about the needs of the community and the situation with people who found shelter in safer areas. They discussed the support that is needed now and will be needed in the future: from humanitarian aid to infrastructure reconstruction.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

In the morning, during an air alert signal, 1 enemy Shahed UAV was destroyed. There were no injuries, deaths or damage.

Chernivtsi oblast

For 5 days, the Zvytiaha 6.0military-patriotic training took place in Chernivtsi oblast, which brought together young men and women aged 13 to 20 from all over Ukraine. The training participants studied tactical medicine, defense and assault organization, topography, terrain orientation, drone control, weapon handling, and also gained endurance during hand-to-hand sparring.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The UN stated that at least 12,300 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the start of the full-scale russian invasion. The civilian death toll in Ukraine has increased in recent months due to russia’s use of drones, long-range missiles and cruise bombs.

Rustem Umerov, Ukrainian Defense Minister, met with representatives of 9 countries of Southeast Europe. They discussed weapons for Ukraine, investments and military training.

Mariia Zaitseva, belarusian volunteer was killed near Bakhmut. After the start of the full-scale russian invasion, Mariia Zaitseva joined the Ukrainian military. The girl was killed in battles near Bakhmut, where she fought as part of the 2nd International Legion. On 16 January, she turned 24, and on the morning of 18 January, she was killed.
