It has been the 1060 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The situation along the frontline remains challenging. Ukraine’s Defense Forces focus their efforts on disrupting the offensive plans of the Russian aggressor while neutralizing its personnel and equipment.

Since the start of the day, 89 combat engagements have already occurred, with the most intense fighting reported in the Pokrovsk direction.

Today, communities in the settlements of Tymofiivka in Kharkiv Oblast; Zaliznyi Mist in Chernihiv Oblast; and Popivka, Sosnivka, and Prohres in Sumy Oblast suffered from enemy artillery and mortar fire.

In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy launched five assaults on our positions near Vovchansk.

In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy attacked Ukrainian positions four times near Petropavlivka, Lozova, and Pishchane. Hlushkivka was struck by a guided aerial bomb (KAB).

In the Lyman direction, the invaders conducted nine attacks on Ukrainian positions near Zelenyi Hai, Pershotravneve, Kopanky, Novoiehorivka, Novosadove, Novoliubivka, and Zarichne. Four clashes are ongoing.

In the Kramatorsk direction, the occupiers attacked four times near Chasiv Yar and Stupochky. Two guided aerial bombs (KABs) were dropped on Markove.

In the Toretsk direction, there were 16 enemy attacks near Toretsk, Krymske, and Shcherbynivka. Ukrainian defenders have already repelled 10 of these attacks, while fighting continues.

In the Pokrovsk direction, since the beginning of the day, the enemy has made 32 attempts to dislodge our defenders from their positions near Vodiane Druhe, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Lysivka, Zelene, Shevchenko, Uspenivka, Slovyanka, Andriivka, Dachne, Ulakly, and Yantarne. The Defense Forces have held the line, repelling 28 attacks, while four clashes are still ongoing.

In the Novopavlivka direction, the invaders launched 12 attacks near Velyka Novosilka. The battles continue. The enemy bombed Odradne, Rozlyv, Vesele, and Temyrivka with guided aerial bombs (KABs).

In the Orikhiv direction, occupation forces carried out one assault on our positions near Novodanilivka.

The enemy attempted one unsuccessful assault on our defenders’ positions in the Prydniprovske direction.

An operation is ongoing in the Kursk region. Ukrainian soldiers have repelled five enemy attacks today, with three clashes still underway. The enemy launched 224 artillery strikes, including four with multiple launch rocket systems.

In the Siversk and Huliaipole directions, the enemy has not conducted active operations since the start of the day.

As a result of a Russian missile strike on Kyiv, three people have been killed, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Three others received medical assistance on-site.

Basic general military training is mandatory for all university students. This was announced by Deputy Minister of Defense and Brigadier General of Justice Serhii Melnyk. Students who fail the exam or refuse to take the oath will not be able to continue their studies.

 

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy attempted to assault Ukrainian positions near Vovchansk. The Defense Forces successfully repelled the enemy’s advance, according to the Regional Military Administration (RMA).

In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy carried out seven offensive actions near Holubivka, Stepova Novoselivka, and Kruhliakivka. Three clashes are ongoing.

In northern Kharkiv Oblast, soldiers of the “Forpost” Brigade from the Kramatorsk Border Detachment captured Russian infantry who were advancing on them. This was reported by the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine on January 18. Border guards in the Vovchansk direction stopped the assault using drone and artillery strikes, destroying Russian equipment.

Around 6:00 PM, the Russian army struck the Kharkiv and Chuhuiv districts, according to Kharkiv RMA Head Oleh Syniehubov. As a result of the shelling in the Vysochansk community of Kharkiv district, a fire broke out in a two-story building. A missile strike on the Vovchansk community damaged houses, utility structures, vehicles, and a non-residential building.

Yesterday, in the village of Prystin, Kupiansk community, two houses were destroyed, and three were damaged due to enemy shelling. No casualties were reported.

On January 17, 32 people (including one child) were evacuated from the Borivske and Kupiansk directions. This was reported by the Regional Military Administration.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

In the Lyman direction, Ukrainian forces successfully launched a counterattack, reported Viktor Trehubov, spokesperson for the operational-strategic troop group “Khortytsia.”

The missile forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine delivered fire damage to a “Buk-M3” complex and a radar station of the S-300 air defense system of the Russian army in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk Oblast, according to the General Staff.

South of Pokrovsk, Russian forces have failed to achieve success, as the positions are held by soldiers of the UAV company of the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade. However, to the west of the city, the Russian army is attempting to regroup and advance, stated the commander of the strike UAV company of the 68th Separate Jaeger Brigade, known by the call sign “Lyutyi.”

On January 17, in the Pokrovsk direction, Russian forces launched attacks in the areas of Zelenyi Hai, Vodyane Druhe, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Zvirove, Udachne, Uspenivka, Sribne, Dachne, and Yantarne. Intense fighting continues in Lysivka, Zelene, Shevchenko, Kotlyne, Petropavlivka, and Novovasylivka, according to the General Staff. The “Khortytsia” troop group reports that the Russian army is concentrating efforts and deploying additional reserves.

Shelling

A 36-year-old man was killed during artillery shelling in the village of Mykolaivka, part of the Kostiantynivka community in Donetsk Oblast. This was reported by Anastasiia Medvedieva, spokesperson for the regional prosecutor’s office.

The day before, one person was injured as a result of Russian shelling in Donetsk Oblast. Police recorded 2,495 enemy strikes targeting the frontline and residential areas.

Russian forces shelled two settlements: the cities of Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk. In Pokrovsk, a Russian drone injured a civilian. In Kostiantynivka, Russian forces attacked using Grad MLRS, damaging four private homes.

In the Chasiv Yar community in the Bakhmut district, seven private homes and two apartment buildings were damaged. In Siversk, eight homes were reported damaged.

Over the past day, 259 people, including 38 children, were evacuated from the frontline areas.

Luhansk oblast

The enemy continues artillery strikes and deploys a significant number of UAVs. According to the regional military administration (OVA), 112 drones attempted to carry out combat missions the previous day. The enemy launched attacks near Tverdokhlibove, Makiivka, and Bilohorivka.

Russian forces in the area of responsibility of the “Luhansk” Operational and Tactical Group (OTG) are using infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) in unconventional ways, employing them as “taxis.” “They deliver troops and try to avoid engaging in combat, preserving the vehicles for repeated use,” stated Dmytro Zaporozhets, spokesperson for OTG “Luhansk.”

Representatives of the “Yellow Ribbon” movement conducted resistance actions in the occupied cities of Luhansk, Perevalsk, and Donetsk. They put up posters and distributed yellow ribbons in city centers and outskirts, as reported by the “Yellow Ribbon” movement.

In Sievierodonetsk, the epizootic situation has significantly deteriorated during the years of occupation. The occupiers have not implemented preventive measures, leading to an increase in stray animals and the spread of infectious diseases among them. In some areas, residents are forced to purchase pepper spray and stun guns for protection from packs of stray dogs. Reports indicate that stray dogs recently attacked and killed a local woman, but the occupation authorities have failed to respond.

Three months ago, water supply was cut off in the village of Uspenka (Lutuhyne community) and nearby settlements. In the fall, authorities announced that water pipelines would be replaced within three days. However, as the second half of winter begins, the population remains without water.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

According to Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA), around 6am., the enemy launched ballistic missiles at the capital. Near the Lukianivska metro station in Shevchenko district, three people were killed and three others were injured. As a result of the strike, part of a production building was destroyed, followed by a fire on the third floor; a dining establishment, a business center, a shopping center, a shop, and ten cars were also damaged. Additionally, the entrance and exit of the metro station were affected.

Kyiv City State Administration informed that after sustaining damage from enemy shelling, Lukianivska Metro station has resumed operations and is now open to passengers. Additionally, specialists from “Kyivvodokanal” have contained the damage to a water supply main in Shevchenko district that was caused by the morning missile attack on the capital.

As a result of the russian missile strike, contact and engineering networks were damaged, causing changes to several trolleybus routes. According to Kyivpastrans, emergency crews are working to repair the damage.

The regional military administration reported that during the night, the enemy used drones to attack Kyiv oblast, with the air raid alert lasting almost eight hours. In two regions, drone debris damaged three private houses, two outbuildings, and four vehicles. The buildings sustained shrapnel damage to their facades and roofs, and windows were shattered.

A farewell ceremony was held on Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti for Ruslan Hanushchak, a soldier of the 92nd Mechanised Brigade, a participant of the Revolution of Dignity, and a military journalist, photographer, and camera operator known by the call signs “Photographer” and “Ostap.” He was killed in action in Kursk oblast on 12 January.

From the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ruslan, serving as a military correspondent and cameraman, reported on the hostilities in Chernihiv and Kyiv oblasts, frequently coming under enemy fire. He also witnessed the exhumation of mass graves following the liberation of northern parts of Ukraine. He later joined the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a private soldier.

The Regional Military Administration announced that Kyiv region is intensifying its cooperation with Belgian agency Enabel to develop education and healthcare in the oblast. At present, Enabel is funding the construction of shelters in three educational institutions in the oblast. Preparations are also underway for the comprehensive renovation of schools in Dmytrivka and Velyka Dymerka communities.

Additionally, four vocational institutions have been equipped with modern training laboratories for alternative energy sources and electric vehicle repair.

The Ministry of Digital Transformation reported that a team from Kyiv has won the NASA hackathon. They developed an application called NVS-knot, which integrates satellite and hydrological data to inform agricultural decision-making. Out of 15,000 teams worldwide, NVS-knot claimed first place in the “Galactic Impact” category.

Zhytomyr oblast

The President of Ukraine has awarded Polissia paratroopers who captured a North Korean mercenary in Kursk oblast. According to the communications department of the 95th Separate Air Assault Brigade, the Order of Courage, Third Class, was presented to Sergeant Serhii Sorokhmaniuk, Senior Soldier Maksym Didorchuk, and Soldier Pavlo Kudientsov.

Anatolii Vlasiuk, the school’s principal, reported that students of Ozerne Lyceum in Novohuivyne community have attended in-person classes for the first time after nearly a four-year break. A radiation shelter was constructed and put into operation near the educational institution. The new shelter is equipped with modern technology and all the necessities for students’ stay and learning.

Sumy oblast

The regional military administration reported that on 18 January, anti-aircraft guns shot down 3 enemy UAVs of “Shahed” type in the sky over Sumy Oblast. Since the beginning of 2025, 151 enemy drones have been destroyed by the region’s air defense units.

According to “Stalovyi Kordon” (Steel Border) fighters, on the border with Sumy oblast, Ukrainian border guards destroyed a column of russian forces. The convoy was moving at night along a dirt road towards Sumy and was targeted with the RAK multiple launch rocket system. A russian BMP (infantry fighting vehicle) and a quad bike were destroyed, with at least four soldiers eliminated.

On 18 January, russian drone crashed in the regional centre, and its warhead failed to detonate. It was subsequently neutralised by a controlled detonation.

 The Regional Military Administration reported that during the night, the enemy shelled the Shalyhyne community by mortars, resulting in two explosions.

On 17 January, russians carried out 26 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 49 explosions. The attacks targeted 9 communities: Khotin, Myropilia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Slobidka, Esman, Znob-Novhorod, and Seredyna-Buda communities. The enemy attaked by mortars, (21 explosions), MLRS (10 explosions), used FPV-drones (10 explosions), dropped explosive gadgets from UAVs (5 explosions).

According to the Regional Military Administration Head Volodymyr Artiukh, in Sumy oblast, the first crews of mobile fire units from Volunteer Formations of Territorial Communities (DFTG) received cash certificates for destroying enemy aerial targets. Twelve volunteers received certificates for financial payments. The award for destroying one target amounts to UAH 24,000 per crew.

Chernihiv oblast

On 17 Desember russian army attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Snovsk, and Horodnia. In total, 34 explosions were recorded. The enemy fired by mortars (17 explosions), and barrel artillery (12 explosions), also used UAVs (4 explosions) and FVP-drones.

A bridge over Desna River on Chernihiv bypass road has opened. At the end of February 2022, one part of the structure on Kyiv side was destroyed to halt the advance of occupation forces. According to the contracting company Avtomagistral-Pivden, the restored bridge is designed to handle substantial loads and serves as the main freight transport route for the regional centre.

Twenty new three-wheeled electric bicycles were delivered by a charitable organisation to the border communities of Snovsk and Semenivka. “Proliska” humanitarian mission, supported by the Humanitarian Fund for Ukraine, provided these vehicles to social and medical workers.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that at night, the occupiers shelled the Marhanets community of Nikopol region with artillery. The russians also shelled Pavlohrad. The enemy attack caused a fire.

During the day, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region about two dozen times. They fired from artillery, used kamikaze drones, dropped ammunition from drones and shelled from Grad. They targeted the region centre, Marhanets and Myrove communities. A religious institution, a utility company and a dozen solar panels were damaged.

During the recent repatriation from russian captivity, 29-year-old Vyacheslav Kutin from Pokrov, Dnipro region, returned from captivity. In a battle near Robotyno village of Zaporizhzhia region, the soldier sustained severe injuries to his limbs and was taken prisoner, where he remained for more than a year.

​​ Kirovohrad oblast

In Kropyvnytskyi, relatives of prisoners of war and missing persons came out to the “Hear Us” campaign to remind the public about Ukrainian prisoners held in russian captivity. 

25-year-old soldier Bohdan Korzin, who died in the war with Russia, was paid the last tribute in Verbluzhka village of Kamianets community, Kropyvnytskyi region, Kirovohrad oblast.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that at night, defenders shot down a russian UAV in Cherkasy oblast. 

In Cherkasy, a minute of silence was observed in memory of Kostya Yuzvyuk, a defender who died in the war with the call sign Istanbul.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

This morning, russian forces struck Zaporizhzhia downtown. Administrative buildings of an industrial enterprise, over 20 residential houses, schools, kindergartens, and a religious structure were damaged. Eleven people were injured, one person was killed, and a 27-year-old man is reported missing.

Yesterday, the occupiers carried out 241 attacks on nine settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. russian forces launched two missile strikes on Zaporizhzhia, injuring two people. A total of 132 UAVs of various modifications attacked Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka. Two MLRS strikes targeted Shcherbaky. Additionally, 105 artillery attacks hit Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, and Novodarivka. Nine reports of damage to residential houses and infrastructure facilities were received.

It is reported that the occupying forces attempted one assault on Ukrainian positions near Novodanilivka towards Orikhiv front.

Mykolaiv oblast

Today, on 18 January 18, the event “Stop – In Memory of Kostia” took place in Mykolaiv. It was organized as part of a nationwide campaign dedicated to six months since the death of military serviceman and volunteer Kostiantyn Yuzviuk from Rivne. Participants came out with posters and photographs of loved ones to honor the memory of fallen Ukrainian soldiers. Similar events were held simultaneously in 27 other Ukrainian cities.

Odesa oblast

As of 6 a.m. on 18 January, there were seven enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea, including two carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo capacity of up to 22 missiles.

Over the past day, three vessels passed through the Kerch Strait in the interests of russia, and nine ships entered the Sea of Azov.

Kherson oblast

Around 6:00 p.m., russian military forces attacked Komyshany near Kherson, wounding a 65-year-old woman. According to Kherson RMA she was diagnosed with explosive injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and a concussion.

It is reported that russian forces shelled Beryslav with mortars, resulting in the deaths of a man and a woman.

Today, the russian army shelled Tomyna Balka with artillery. A 70-year-old woman, who was in the yard of her house, was injured and hospitalized.

In the morning, russian troops shelled Stanislav using artillery. 71-year-old man was killed. The prosecutor’s office stated that law enforcement authorities initiated a pre-trial investigation.

A married couple, a 67-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman, suffered blast injuries, concussions, and post-traumatic encephalopathy in yesterday’s shelling of Stanislav. Today, they sought medical assistance.

As reported by head of Kherson RMA, during a nighttime drone attack, air defense forces shot down a “Shahed-131/136” UAV over  Kherson oblast.

Yesterday, russian forces shelled 31 settlements in Kherson oblast, targeting critical and social infrastructure, as well as residential areas. They damaged 23 private homes, gas pipelines, and garages. One person was killed and five were injured.

Southern Defense Forces destroyed 13 artillery systems and mortars, an anti-tank “Kornet” system, and 20 units of armored vehicles within a day. According to the Southern Defense Forces, they also hit shelters, observation posts, and storage locations for ammunition and fuel, eliminated 80 enemy personnel.

Following a russian shelling on 16 January in the suburb of Antonivka near Kherson, a 45-year-old man was injured. Today, he was hospitalized with blast injuries and a concussion.

Police evacuated a mother and her two children in need of medical assistance from Novooleksandrivka, a settlement under constant russian shelling. The police reported that the children were hospitalized and will remain under medical supervision.

It is reported that russian forces are militarizing children in kindergartens in the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast. According to the “Yellow Ribbon” resistance movement, they regularly visit institutions to discuss the “special military operation” (SVO) and present a distorted history of the region. Activists documented participation by military personnel from the “Storm Z” unit, many of whom were previously convicted of murder.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The 1st Lutsk Veteran Business Fair I Could and You Can Too was held at the Korsak Museum of Contemporary Ukrainian Art. The purpose of the event is to promote the development of veteran entrepreneurship, support veteran initiatives, and popularize the success stories of those who, having returned from the front, found the strength to start or continue their own business.

Zakarpattia oblast

During the period from 1 January to 31 December 2024, 1,732 internally displaced persons applied to the regional employment service to find work, 1,323 of them had the status of registered unemployed. Of these, 586 IDPs were employed.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The number of rehabilitation departments in Ivano-Frankivsk has increased. Physical and psychological rehabilitation services will also be provided at the St. Luke Clinic medical and diagnostic center. The total area of ​​the newly created rehabilitation center is 360 sqm. Key areas of the institution will be rehabilitation after a stroke, neurorehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation, and children’s rehabilitation.

Lviv oblast

As part of the Lion’s Revenge initiative, Lviv City Hall sent 1 electronic warfare system, generators, EcoFlow charging stations, 38 Mavic 3/3 Pro/3T drones and batteries worth UAH 8.3m to the military.

In the past week, 52 more people have been evacuated to Lviv oblast from frontline oblasts. Among the evacuees, 10 are people with limited mobility and 28 are elderly. It is worth noting that some IDPs are returning to Lviv oblast for the 2nd or even third time. In Lviv oblast, all IDP are met by volunteers from the Medical and Psychological Assistance organization.

Rivne oblast

In Rivne, military psychologists were given the opportunity not only to improve their qualifications, but also to restore their own emotional resources. In December, a unique project was launched in the oblast, organized by the Operational Command West with the support of the Business Development Foundation NGO. For 2 weeks, military psychologists learn the latest practices used in Israel and NATO countries. The recovery program also includes therapeutic procedures, cognitive behavioral therapy workshops, and stress management training.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil community sent 30 FPV drones to the 105th Territorial Defense Brigade from budget funds.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

11 families of prisoners of war or missing persons from Khmelnytskyi community received material assistance. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 500.000.

Chernivtsi oblast

In Bukovina, citizens are being trained for national resistance. During 2024, Chernivtsi RMA and the 107th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade jointly conducted continuous theoretical and practical training, covering various areas, including first aid, fire and tactical training, the use of personal protective equipment, handling explosives, and the basics of working with UAVs. About a thousand people from Chernivtsi, Dnistrovsk and Vyzhnytsk region took part in the training. These are 26 groups, which included employees of local governments, municipal institutions and organizations, enterprises, as well as all willing citizens aged 18 to 60.

6 unfinished russian oil tankers have been placed under US sanctions for the first time. This is the 1st time Washington has imposed sanctions on tankers before they even set sail, unless they are carrying sanctioned cargo.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with a UN delegation led by Tom Fletcher and Filippo Grandi. They discussed humanitarian aid.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the President’s Office, held separate meetings with Fabrizio Saggio, Diplomatic Advisor to the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of Italy, and Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Production of Italy. They discussed continued support for Ukraine in the fight against russian aggression, as well as steps to strengthen our state’s positions on the path to establishing a just and lasting peace.
