The Ukrainian Defence Forces are holding back the russian invaders’ offensive. The defence forces are taking the necessary measures to prevent the enemy from advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory.
The total number of combat engagements is currently 76.
Hostile artillery and mortar fire affected the communities of Khrinivka, Hirsk, Yeline, Karpovychi in Chernihiv oblast; Novovasylivka, Bila Bereza, Kucherivka, Miropilske, Petrushivka, Hrabovske, Porozok in Sumy oblast. The enemy also conducted an air strike on Medvedivka in Chernihiv oblast.
Towards Kharkiv, the enemy attacked the positions of our troops 7 times near Vovchansk and towards Mala Shapkivka. Four firefights are still ongoing. Kozacha Lopan came under an air strike.
Towards Kupiansk, russian invaders conducted two attacks near Petropavlivka and Zahryzove.
Towards Lyman, the invading army made four attacks on Ukrainian positions near Yampolivka and in the direction of Nove. One firefight is still ongoing.
Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy is trying to advance in the area of Chasiv Yar and Kurdiumivka. Two of the three attacks have already been repelled by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Towards Toretsk, the enemy is trying to penetrate our defences in the areas of Ozarianivka, Druzhba and Toretsk. Our defenders repelled eight attacks by the invaders, and four more attacks are ongoing.
Towards Pokrovsk, russian invaders have made 18 attempts to push our soldiers from their positions near the settlements of Oleksandropil, Zelene Pole, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Kotlyne, Preobrazhenka, Kotliarivka, Bohdanivka, Yasenove and Andriivka. Ukrainian defence forces held back the attack and repelled 17 attacks, with one firefight still ongoing.
Towards Novopavlivka, Ukrainian defenders repelled four assault attacks by enemy troops. The enemy is trying to advance in the vicinity of Kostiantynopil.
Towards Huliaipole, the enemy attacked Ukrainian troops’ positions twice in the direction of Pryvilne and Vilne Pole. Russian terrorists’ aircraft carried out three strikes in the areas of Huliaipol and Zaliznychne.
Towards Orikhiv, the invaders carried out three attacks in the vicinity of Stepove and Shcherbaky. Two of them are still ongoing.
The enemy has unsuccessfully attacked three times towards Kherson.
The operation in Kursk oblast continues. Ukrainian soldiers repelled twelve enemy attacks today. Moreover, the enemy’s aviation carried out 13 air strikes in this area, dropping 17 drones.
The enemy did not conduct any offensive actions towards Siversk.
There were no significant changes in other areas.
3,200 bodies of Ukrainian defenders have not yet been identified. This year, on 24 January and 14 February, Ukraine returned home the bodies of 1,457 soldiers who died in the defence of Ukraine in various sectors. 80% of the bodies repatriated to Ukraine from detention centres, prisons and other special institutions in the russian Federation show signs of various forms of torture, including deprivation of food, medical care, etc.
One fifth of the candidates applying to Ukrainian army recruitment centres are women. In February, 5,341 people applied to Ukrainian army recruitment centres, including 1,098 in the last week of the month. The number of candidates who started the process of joining the army in February was 772. In total, this figure increased to 8,881 candidates over the period of the centres’ operation. The proportion of women has increased, now accounting for 21%, or 1,830 people, of the total number of candidates for the Defence Forces. The highest percentage of women applied in Vinnytsia (44%), Chernivtsi (43%), and Khmelnytskyi oblasts (41%). Last month, a new recruitment centre for the Ukrainian army was opened in Boryspil, bringing the network to 49 centres. In particular, 1 of them operates online throughout Ukraine. In total, since the centres started operating, specialists have provided consultations to 43,464 citizens. The Ukrainian army recruitment centres do not issue summonses, and all consultations are confidential.
They offer more than 10,000 vacancies in various military formations, including the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, the State Border Guard Service, and the Security Service of Ukraine.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff reported that as of 22:00, towards Kharkiv, russian troops assaulted the positions of Ukrainian units near Vovchansk and towards Mala Shapkivka. The AFU repelled 10 russian attempts to advance. Kozacha Lopan was hit by an air strike.
Towards Kupiansk, russian troops conducted five offensives near Petropavlivka and Zahryzove. Ukrainian troops stopped all attacks.-

Towards Kupiansk, yesterday there were nine attacks by russian troops. The defense forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions in the direction of the settlements of Petropavlivka, Zahryzove, Kamyanka, Zapadne, Kruhlyakivka, and Bohuslavka.
Shelling
According to the Regional Military Administration, on the Kupiansk-Kindrashivka road, an enemy FPV drone struck near a “VAZ” car at 16:50. А 45-year-old woman was killed. Four others were injured: three men and one woman. All the victims were employees of the civil municipal enterprise in the Kupiansk city community.

The regional prosecutor’s office reported that around 13:00, russian forces shelled Shipuvate in the Kupiansk district with a “Uragan” multiple rocket launcher. Warehouse buildings, cargo vehicles, tractors of an agricultural enterprise, residential houses, and utility buildings were damaged. No casualties were reported.

The head of the Pechenizhka community, Oleksandr Husarov, reported that at 23:12, two “Shahed” UAV strikes ignited the roof of an educational institution and a sports hall in the village of Pechenihy (Chuhuiv district, Pechenizhka community). The fire spread over an area of 62 m². The underground educational space, opened there in winter for offline classes, remained undamaged. The lyceum sustained three through-holes, shattered windows, and other damage.

At 22:50, a russian strike in the village of Ivanivske (Berestynskyi district, Berestynska community) ignited grass and shrubs, with the fire spreading over 2.5 hectares.
At 17:30, in the village of Maliivka (Izium district, Borivska community), russians launched a strike, reportedly from an MLRS. A private residential house was damaged.
At 17:00, in the village of Prykolotne (Kupiansk district, Vilkhuvatska community), an enemy UAV hit the premises of a civilian enterprise. No casualties or destruction were reported.
At 16:45, in the village of Riasne (Bohodukhiv district, Zolochivska community), an FPV drone strike injured a woman.
At 16:15, in the village of Zolochiv (Bohodukhiv district, Zolochivska community), the enemy attacked a civilian enterprise with a guided aerial bomb, damaging industrial equipment.
At 15:50, in the settlement of Zolochiv (Bohodukhiv district, Zolochivska community), russians struck the residential sector with a guided aerial bomb, damaging a private house.
The head of legal department of Merefa oil refinery plant, Anastasiia Cherednykova, reported that during the night of March 17, about 20 russian drones targeted the plant. This was the fourth attack on the facility, which has now completely ceased operations.
Donetsk oblast
Frontline
The General Staff reported that the Defense Forces repelled over 60 russian assaults on the Pokrovsk and Toretsk directions in the past day.
On the Toretsk direction, russian troops attacked Ukrainian positions 25 times near Toretsk, Dachne, Druzhba, Ozarianivka, Dyliivka, and Leonidivka.
Lieutenant General Serhii Naiev stated that the Ukrainian command had decided to withdraw AFU troops “from disadvantageous positions” on one section of the front in Donetsk Oblast.
On the Pokrovsk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled 44 russian assaults near Vodyane Druhe, Svyrydonivka, Promin, Novopavlivka, Kotlyne, Udachne, Novooleksandrivka, Bohdanivka, Lysivka, and Andriivka.
Shelling
The head of the Kramatorsk City Military Administration, Oleksandr Honcharenko, reported that explosions were heard in Kramatorsk at 21:20, with preliminary reports indicating strikes outside the community.
Over the past day, police recorded 3,371 enemy attacks along the front line and on residential areas. Seven settlements came under fire: the cities of Bilytske, Kostiantynivka, Lyman, Pokrovsk, Rodynske, Toretsk, and the village of Stinky. A total of 36 civilian objects were damaged, including 25 residential buildings.
In Pokrovsk, russian forces targeted a residential area, injuring three children and damaging two houses.
In Kostiantynivka, russian troops dropped two FAB-250 bombs, injuring two civilians and damaging two apartment buildings, 13 private houses, a civilian car, three power lines, and two gas pipelines.
Another bomb hit the village of Stinky in the Kostiantynivka community, damaging six private houses and a power line.
In Bilytske, an enemy FPV drone damaged a private house and an outbuilding.
Rodynske was hit by artillery fire, damaging a private house and two outbuildings.
Other
The Mariupol City Council reported that russian occupiers are constructing a military and sports training center called “Voiny” on the site of the destroyed “Orlyonok” children’s recreation camp in the city’s Left Bank district.

The Mariupol City Council reported that high levels of nitrite nitrogen, phosphates, mercury, and localized accumulations of petroleum products have been detected in rivers in parts of the occupied Donetsk Oblast. Residents of Mariupol have also observed similar contamination.
A documentary book, “Є пульс!” (“Pulse”) by Zoriana Byndas, featuring 21 stories about paramedics in Donetsk Oblast, was presented to the public in Kyiv.
Luhansk oblast
According to the RMA, russian army aimed 207 drones towards the fortifications of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They struck using artillery support 19 times and repeatedly used aviation. Towards Siversk, they attempted to advance in Bilohorivka.Towards Lyman, they attacked near Balka Zhuravka.
The occupiers are isolating Rubizhne from the outside world, even from the small amount of outside connection it had within the so-called “lpr”. Recently, the russians restricted the entry of outsiders into the settlement. Those without property rights in Rubizhne can only enter with a personal pass from the occupation administration. The next step was the cancellation of transportation connections, including regular routes to Starobilsk and Varvarivka.
In Siverskodonetsk, there have been further complaints about the poor quality of the “demonstration” repairs done by the occupiers. A house damaged by russian shelling was “repaired” like many others, with only facade work being done. Internal load-bearing walls that were displaced by shell impacts were not restored.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
KCMA reported that in Kyiv, the wreckage of a downed enemy UAV fell on the territory of an educational institution in Desnianskyi district in the morning. A fire broke out in an open area. Rescuers from the State Emergency Service eliminated the consequences of the drone’s wreckage falling on the school’s territory. During the attack, all students and teachers were in the shelter.

According to Kyiv City Military Administration, no air alert was announced in Kyiv at night. However, seven enemy UAVs were spotted on the Kyiv outskirts.
Kyiv Regional Military Administration reported that explosive works are being carried out in Bila Tserkva region. Specialists of the State Emergency Service are working there. Residents of the region and the outskirts of the capital are warned to stay calm.
Tymur Tkachenko, Head of KCMA, announced that starting from 21 March, public ground transport in the capital will operate under alert conditions. During air raid alerts, transport will stop at shelters along the route. After disembarking of the people who want to enter the shelter, the transport will continue to move along the route. The movement of metro trains on the ground during the air raid will remain limited for the time being.
Wolfgang Schmidt, Head of the Office of the Federal Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Federal Minister for Special Envoys, and Martin Jaeger, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Ukraine, visited Kyiv oblast. During the visit, they inspected the Romanivsky Bridge in Irpin, which played an important role in the evacuation of civilians during the occupation of oblast. The delegation also paid tribute to the memory of the deceased residents of Bucha at the memorial installation on the territory of the Church of St Andrew the First-Called.
Kyiv Regional Military Administration announced that Kyiv oblast has signed a Memorandum of Partnership with Buckinghamshire (UK). The memorandum opens up new opportunities for cooperation in education, healthcare, business, investment and reconstruction.
Zhytomyr oblast
The RMA reported that training under the National Resistance programme is underway in Zhytomyr oblast. This time, the training, organised with the assistance of the League for Defence Assistance NGO, is being attended by university students and civil servants.
There are 3 regional and 78 local programmes to support IDPs in the oblast. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, over UAH 1.38bn has been allocated from the state, oblast and local budgets to support IDPs. Funding allocated since the beginning of 2025 has amounted to UAH 60m.
In Zhytomyr oblast, 4 housing construction projects for 600 IDPs have been implemented or are nearing completion. In the village of Veresy, in cooperation with the Italian Red Cross, 56 modular houses have been installed, housing 155 IDPs. In Zvyagel, a building was reconstructed into a dormitory for internally displaced persons under the EU grant programme, where 47 smart apartments were equipped. In Zhytomyr, the construction of four apartment blocks with more than 110 apartments is nearing completion with funding from the European Commission. Three more similar projects are planned for 230 IDPs with a total cost of over UAH 200m.
In Ovruch, together with the Estonian Centre for International Cooperation, a barracks is being reconstructed into a residential building, land has been allocated for a modular town in Andrushivka, and a 600m² dormitory is planned to be built in Zarichany.
Sumy oblast
In Bilovody village in Khotin community, located less than 7 km from russia, a school was destroyed by a russian strike. According to the director of the Ukrainian Centre for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage Sites NGO, this was a former estate that had served as a school for over 100 years. The building was constructed in the early 20th century in the unique style of Ukrainian modernism.
During night and morning, russians carried out 11 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 23 explosions by different kinds of weapons. The attacks targeted Yunakivka, Myropilia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Shalyhyne, and Znob-Novhorod communities.
On 18 March, over the skies of Sumy oblast, Ukrainian anti-aircraft gunners shot down 3 enemy Shahed-type UAVs.
Serhii Bespalko, Head of Velyka Pysarivka Military Administration, reported that on 17 March, around 3pm, the enemy struck Velyka Pysarivka by an FPV-drone, resulting in the destruction of a private residential house by fire. In the evening of 16 March, the community was hit by a Molniya-type UAV. A building housing a pharmacy, hotel, and café was destroyed. No casualties were reported.

Serhii Minakov, Head of Esman Community, informed that in Kucherivka village, Esman community, on 17 March, russian forces struck a private house by an FPV-drone. A fire broke out, which rescuers were unable to extinguish due to the threat of repeated shelling. The house burned down.
On 17 March, russian forces struck a public transport stop in Velyka Pysarivka. The enemy shelled the community by mortars, FPV-drones, and dropped explosive devices from UAVs.
In Yunakivka community, a private house was damaged due to russian shelling.
Throughout 17 March, russian forces carried out 95 shellings in Sumy oblast, with a total of 154 strikes recorded. The enemy used mortars (20 explosions), MLRS (4 explosions), artillery (49 explosions), conducted FPV-drone attacks (45 explosions), launched GABs (6 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (30 explosions). Ten border communities came under enemy fire: Mykolaivka rural, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Chernechchyna, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, and Seredyna-Buda.

Mykola Torianyk, Head of Khotin Community, said that due to a significant deterioration in the security situation, residents of Khotin community are being urged to evacuate to safe locations. The situation has worsened due to continuous heavy shelling over the past week. He stated that around a thousand people still need to be evacuated. All settlements in the community, including the village of Khotin and nearby villages, are at risk.
On 17 March, the evacuation of residents from Velyka Rybytsia villages and Zapsillia in Myropillia community took place. Nine residents were transported by the rapid response unit of Sumy Regional Organisation of Ukrainian Red Cross.
Sumy Regional Military Administration signed a memorandum of understanding with the Italian region of Abruzzo. The memorandum outlines cooperation in the following areas: the reconstruction of educational institutions, cultural facilities, and architectural monuments damaged as a result of russian aggression; the restoration of Sumy’s ecology; and the implementation of projects to support children’s sports and arts groups.
Chernihiv oblast
The Regional Military Administration reported that during the day on 18 March, russian forces attacked Semenivka community twice. An enemy strike drone targeted a civilian car, injuring a local resident who was hospitalized with a closed head injury. A russian strike by a guided aerial bomb damaged windows, roofs, and fences in 30 households in the community. Additionally, the strike caused a fire in dry vegetation, covering an area of one hectare.
Sumy Police informed that on 18 March, russian forces attacked one of the communities in Pryluky region by drones. As a result of the strikes, private houses were damaged.
Throughout 17 March, russian forces attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovsk. The enemy carried out mortar shelling (31 explosions) and barrel artillery shelling (16 explosions), conducted FPV-drone strikes (7 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (9 explosions). According to Chernihiv Border Detachment, explosions were reported towards 12 villages.
According to the Department of Civil Protection and Defence Work of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, over the past day, as a result of an attack by russian drones on a village in Koriukivka regions, three houses caught fire. Specifically, the fire occurred in Klyusy village.
The Department of Culture and Tourism announced that three settlements in Chernihiv oblast have been included in the single national memory route dedicated to the events of the russo-Ukrainian war. These are the villages of Yahidne and Lukashivka in Chernihiv region and Nova Basan in Nizhyn region.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
From evening until morning, russian forces launched multiple attacks on Nikopol region. Drones dropped explosives on Marhanets community, while Pokrov community was shelled by artillery. There were no casualties reported. Late in the evening, Shahed drones caused fires in Dnipro region due to direct hits on an infrastructure facility. Firefighters extinguished the blaze. An enterprise was damaged, but no one was injured.
Air defence forces performed exceptionally well – the Air Command East destroyed 3 enemy drones.
2 regions came under attack – Nikopol and Synelnykove. The russian forces shelled Nikopol region by artillery and launched a kamikaze drone, targeting Nikopol city, Marhanets and Pokrov communities. A drone strike hit Novopavlivka community in Synelnykove region, damaging a private house. Updated reports confirmed damage in Marhanets community (Nikopol region) from the nighttime attack, affecting a private house, an outbuilding, a car and a gas pipeline.
Vinnytsia oblast
Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that the 3rd Assault Brigade and the 22nd Separate Mechanised Brigade received another batch of aid from Vinnytsia residents. Volunteers donated 400 FPV drones and additional aerial munitions. This was the 8th delivery for the 3rd Assault Brigade and the 9th for the 22nd Mechanised Brigade.
Kirovohrad oblast
Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, informed that air defence forces were active in Kirovohrad oblast, destroying enemy drones. There were no casualties or destruction reported.
A memorial ceremony was held at the Dalekoskhidne (Far Eastern) Cemetery in Kropyvnytskyi for fallen soldier Vitalii Yevtushenko. The 51-year-old soldier was killed on 8 March near Kamianka village, Izium region, Kharkiv oblast.
Poltava oblast
According to the RMA, overnight, russian forces attacked Poltava oblast. Falling debris from downed drones in Lubny region damaged roofs and windows of 2 private houses and 1 non-residential building. There were no injuries reported.
A Veterans Support Centre opened in Myrhorod, providing assistance and reintegration services for veterans and active military personnel, as well as their families.
Soldier Eduard Heiko from Hrebinky community was killed on 30 January 2024, during a russian assault on Ukrainian positions near Avdiivka. He had been listed as missing but was identified through DNA testing.
Cherkasy oblast
Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, reported that air defence forces were active in the oblast overnight, destroying enemy drones. In Cherkasy, falling debris from a downed drone caused a fire in a warehouse storing food supplies.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Defence Forces in Orikhiv region repelled 2 russian attacks near Stepove and Lobkove. In Huliaipole region, russian troops launched 10 unsuccessful attacks near Novosilka and Novopil.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, said that on the evening of 17 March, a russian attack damaged a critical infrastructure facility in one of the frontline communities. More than 3,000 consumers lost power, and 3 villages were left without water. Power supply has since been restored in Kushuhum community.
On 17 March, russian forces carried out 422 strikes on 8 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast, including 275 drone attacks on Kamianske, Lukianivske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne and Novodarivka.
According to the National Resistance Centre, russia plans to deport more than 4,500 children from occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia oblast to russia for so-called “rehabilitation”. This is part of russia’s mass abduction of Ukrainian children, who are subjected to propaganda, military training and, in some cases, never return home. In 2023, over 40,000 Ukrainian children were taken to russian “re-education camps”.
Mykolaiv oblast
Based on the information provided by Mykolaiv RMA, on the night of 18 March, air defence forces destroyed one Shahed drone over Mykolaiv oblast.
During 17 March, russian forces attacked Kutsurub community 3 times by FPV drones. One strike damaged a minibus near Parutyne village. There were no injuries reported.
Odesa oblast
Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6am on 18 March, no russian warships were present in the Black or Azov Seas.
4 russian warships were spotted in the Mediterranean Sea, including 3 carrying Kalibr cruise missiles with a total volley of up to 26 missiles. During the day, 6 ships entered the Black Sea and 8 entered the Azov Sea through the Kerch Strait, 3 of which had passed through the Bosphorus.
Kherson oblast
According to Kherson RMA, at around 6:30pm, russian artillery struck Dariivka, injuring a 37-year-old man, who was hospitalised in moderate condition.
Roman Mrochko, Head of Kherson CMA, informed that yesterday’s evening, a russian drone attack injured a 25-year-old man in Dniprovskyi district, causing a blast injury and shrapnel wounds.
Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 17 March, russian forces shelled 30 settlements in Kherson iblast, targeting critical infrastructure and residential areas. 12 private houses, an invincibility point and a vehicle were damaged. 2 people were killed and 7 injured.
The RMA added that a 49-year-old woman who was injured in a russian attack in Kherson yesterday sought medical help. She was diagnosed with a blast injury and a concussion.
On 14 March, a 70-year-old resident of Chervonyi Maiak was injured in a russian drone strike, suffering blast trauma, chest injuries and shrapnel wounds to his head and arms. He remains hospitalised.

A Veterans Development Center will soon be launched in the Carpathian region. It was created on the basis of Ivano-Frankivsk Vocational Polytechnic Lyceum. Lviv oblast
During his working visit to Lviv, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, honored the memory of fallen Ukrainian soldiers. He laid flowers on the graves of defenders at the Honorary Burial Ground of Heroes at the Lychakiv Cemetery, where soldiers who were killed in battles with the russian occupiers have been buried since April 2022.

Rivne oblast
Nazar Sapeta, serviceman of the Ranks of Lviv paratroopers from Zolochiv region, received the Golden Star Order. He was wounded and underwent rehabilitation.
Ternopil oblast
On 17 March, the Support the Armed Forces of Ukraine – Plant a Name Tree charity campaign will start again in Ternopil. This is a joint opportunity to make the city greener and at the same time help the military.
