War in Ukraine today: latest news, 17 September, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 937th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression.

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:

On 17 September, the Defense Forces continued to fight decisively against the invaders, resisting numerous attempts by the enemy to advance deeper into Ukrainian territory. The enemy tried to use their advantage in manpower and air support. russians were most active towards Kurakhove, where a quarter of all attacks took place.

There were 88 engagements on the front line.

The terrorist state did not stop using aviation and artillery against the border vicinities of Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts. In particular, the vicinities of Karpovychi, Prohres, Uhroidy, Stepok, Vysoke, Buchky and Semenivka were under artillery fire. russia aircraft struck with guided bombs towards Malushyne, Obody, Richky, Katerynivka, Bondarivshchyna, Pysarivka and Hlukhiv, using a total of 14 guided bombs. In addition, the enemy launched four missile strikes on the city of Sumy. Moreover, today, the enemy dropped 17 guided bombs on Kursk region of russia.

Towards Kupiansk, russians attacked Ukrainian positions six times. Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy assaults near Synkivka, Novosynove and towards Lozova. One battle towards Kruhliakivka was still ongoing.

Towards Lyman, russian attacks continued in the vicinities of Cherneshchyna, Druzheliubivka, Makiivka and Torske. There were eight clashes towards this vicinity, with two still ongoing. The situation is under control.

Towards Siversk, russians attacked near Verkhnokamianske and Vyimka, trying twice to break through Ukrainian defences. Both attacks were repelled.

Towards Kramatorsk, the invaders carried out five assault actions near Chasiv Yar, Stupochky and Klishchiivka. One battle was still ongoing towards Bila Hora.

Seven russian attacks took place towards Toretsk, with russians mainly attacking near Toretsk and Nelipivka. Ukrainian defenders responded strongly. Five clashes have already been completed. russian aviation struck with unguided rockets and guided bombs towards Shcherbynivka, Petrivka and Druzhba.

Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers made 19 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the vicinities of Hrodivka, Novotoretske, Orlivka, Mykolaivka and attacked towards Zelenyi Hai. The Defense Forces, holding back the pressure, already repelled 14 enemy attacks, with five battles still ongoing.

The largest number of clashes at this time was towards Kurakhove. With air support, the invaders tried 22 times to advance near Tsukuryn, Zhelanne Pershe, Hirnyk, Heorhiivka and Kostiantynivka. Six clashes were still not resolved.

Towards Vremivka, the invaders attacked six times towards Vuhledar and Katerynivka, with three attacks still ongoing.

The village of Verbove towards Huliaipole suffered an airstrike with unguided rockets.

Towards Kherson, two russian attacks were repelled.

In other vicinities of the front, the situation has not significantly changed.

The Wall Street Journal reported that it has become known that russia and its partners sold stolen Ukrainian grain worth almost $1bn. Thus, russia is profiting from its invasion of Ukraine by selling stolen grain on the global black market with the help of its “friends and sponsors,” which allows it to finance the further expansion of its war. Among russia’s “clients” is a company linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a Crimean businessman, Hanaga, whose company cooperates with Syria, Israel and the UAE. Overall, Ukrainian grain is being sold to Yemen and Iran. In particular, Tehran buys barley at 34% below market prices. Meanwhile, Egypt, Israel and Lebanon have stopped purchasing due to the illegal origin of the goods. According to the Ukrainian non-profit organisation Texty, the total value of the grain taken by russia from the occupied territories could reach $6.4bn.

The execution of a Ukrainian prisoner of war by sword took place in Novohrodivka in Donetsk oblast, as determined by VoxCheck analysts. They analysed photos and videos on various OSINT channels and data from Google Earth, after which they identified the place of the execution of the Ukrainian soldier. This is also confirmed by the Prosecutor General’s Office. Denys Lysenko, the head of the Department for Combating Crimes Committed During Armed Conflict, said that law enforcement is trying to establish the date of the execution and identify the killed man. He was unarmed, and his hands were tied with tape, writes the Ukrainian Ombudsman: “The level of barbarity and bloodlust is impossible to comprehend. Such actions are a gross violation of the Geneva Convention on the Treatment of Prisoners of War! How much longer will the world watch as russia openly shows contempt for any norms and laws?” In this regard, Dmytro Lubinets sent letters to international organisations, the ICRC, and the UN, asking them to document yet another human rights violation by russia. Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office has launched a pre-trial investigation into a criminal case regarding violations of the laws and customs of war, combined with intentional murder.
