The Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding back russian invaders.
On 16 January, the total number of combat engagements was 98.
Communities of the settlements of Bleshnia in Chernihiv oblast; Kucherivka, Rohizne, Ryzhivka, Bachivsk, Budky, Iskryskivshchyna in Sumy oblast were affected by enemy artillery and mortar fire.
Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, there were two combat engagements. The enemy launched three airstrikes, dropping three guided bombs, and carried out 81 attacks, including eight from multiple launch rocket systems.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the Defense Forces repelled three enemy attacks, five more combat engagements are ongoing, the enemy is trying to advance in the vicinity of the settlements of Vovchansk, Vovchanski Khutory, Chuhunivka, Ambarne, Dehtiarne and Kruhle.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy tried to displace Ukrainian units from their occupied positions near Petropavlivka.
Towards Lyman, the invading army launched two attacks on Ukrainian positions near Novovodiane and Kolodiazi.

Towards Kostiantynivka, the enemy attacked 15 times near Kostiantynivka, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Pleshchiivka, Ivanopillia, Yablunivka, Rusyn Yar and towards Sofiivka. One clash is ongoing.
Towards Pokrovsk,russian occupiers made 38 attempts to push Ukrainian soldiers from the occupied positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Shakhove, Nykanorivka, Rodynske, Myrnohrad, Kotlyne, Udachne, Molodetske and Filiia. The defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 36 attacks.
Towards Oleksandrivka, Ukrainian defenders repelled four assault actions by enemy troops. The enemy tried to advance in the vicinity of the settlements of Zelenyi Hai, Oleksiivka, Stepove and Krasnohirske. One battle is ongoing.
Towards Huliaipole, there were 21 battles in the vicinity of the settlements of Solodke, Huliaipole, Dorozhnianka, Zelene and Varvarivka. Seven of them are currently ongoing.
Towards Orikhiv, the enemy tried three times to break through Ukrainian defenses in the vicinity of the settlements of Stepnohirsk and Prymorske, one battle is currently ongoing.
Towards Kherson, there were no enemy offensive actions.
Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
Towards Southern Sloboda, the Defense Forces repelled three russian attacks, five more clashes are ongoing as of 16:00, the invaders are trying to advance in the areas of the settlements of Vovchansk, Vovchanski Khutory, Chuhunivka, Ambarne, Dehtiarne and towards Kruhhle.
Towards Kupiansk, the russian federation tried to displace Ukrainian units from the occupied positions towards Petropavlivka.
There were 180 clashes in the oblast.
Towards Southern Sloboda, our troops stopped 11 enemy attacks in the areas of the settlements of Vovchansk, Prylipka, Tykhye, Starytsia, Vovchanski Khutory and towards the settlements of Izbitske, Kruhhle, and Nesterne.
Towards Kupiansk, there were six attacks. Our defenders repelled the enemy’s assault actions near Pishchane, Kurylivka, Petropavlivka, and Bohuslavka.
Viktor Kovalenko, Head of the community, reported that russian military attacked Zolochiv with UAVs, previously with a Molniya at 10:15 on January 16. As a result of a direct hit, an Opel car was destroyed, a private house and outbuildings were damaged. There was no information about the wounded.
The city of Kharkiv and 10 settlements of the Kharkiv region were subjected to enemy attacks.
A 63-year-old woman was injured as a result of shelling in the village of Studenok, Oskilsky community.
The enemy attacked the UAVs of Slobidskyi district of Kharkiv. In Kharkiv region, the occupiers attacked an energy facility.
The enemy actively used various types of weapons:

Civil infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:
▪️In Kupiansk region, a private house was damaged (village Starovirivka), a car (village Shevchenkove);
▪️In Izium region, power grids were damaged (village Rozsokhvaty), 12 private houses, 5 outbuildings (village Oskil), a dispensary, 10 private houses (village Studenok);
▪️In Kharkiv region, a private house was damaged (village Chernyaki);
▪️In Chuhuiv district, a private house was damaged (village Zarichne).
The transit evacuation point in Lozova received 70 people per day. A total of 16,706 people have been registered at the Point since its inception.
Approximately 80% of the population of Borova community of Izium region were evacuated and remained to live in Kharkiv oblast. The community, consisting of 38 settlements, has been in the zone of active hostilities since the summer of 2024.
Donetsk oblast
The General Staff said that russian troops have increased the number of attacks towards Kostiantynivka and Pokrovsk.
Towards Kostiantynivka, russian troops carried out 21 attacks near the settlements of Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, Rusyn Yar, Oleksandro-Shultyne, Shcherbynivka, Pleshchiivka and towards Novopavlivka, Stepanivka, Sofiivka.
Towards Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian military stopped 46 assaults, and the russian army attacked 19 more times towards Lyman.
Maksym Butolin, Chief Sergeant of the 54th Hetman Ivan Mazepa Brigade, reports that russian troops have intensified assault activity in the defense direction of the 54th Motorized Rifle Brigade, operating in small groups and increasing the number of drones. The occupiers have turned Siversk into a hub, but the city is under direct fire control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The russian military almost does not use heavy equipment.
The RMA reported that at about 11 a.m. on January 16, the russian army struck an industrial facility in Kramatorsk. As a result of the strike, three high-rise buildings and warehouses were damaged.
The RMA reports that on the night of January 16, the russian military struck the private sector of Kramatorsk. According to him, at 00:42, russian troops struck with a Geran-2 UAV. Six residential buildings and a fire station were damaged.
During January 15, russia launched 1,316 strikes on the front line and residential sector.
8 settlements were under fire: the cities of Dobropillia, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Lyman, Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, the villages of Maiaki and Rubizhne.
11 civilian objects were destroyed, including 5 residential buildings.
In Lyman, russians wounded a civilian.
The enemy dropped a GAB-250 bomb on Kramatorsk – a private house and an enterprise were damaged. Another shelling occurred today after midnight – no information about casualties was received, the consequences are being established.
In Druzhkivka, russian troops damaged 2 private houses and an enterprise.
In Slaviansk, the occupiers hit the Molniya-2 UAV – the infrastructure of a utility company was damaged.
In Mykolaivka, an enemy FPV drone destroyed a civilian car.
In Maiaki, 2 private houses were damaged as a result of a Molniya-2 UAV hit.
The russian army attacked Dobropillya with two GAB-250 aerial bombs – an industrial enterprise was destroyed.
Luhansk oblast
The day before, russians attacked with mortars and grenade launchers. In five cases, they directed drones and FPV drones towards the Ukrainian defenders. In total, russians made 19 assault attempts towards Lyman. They attacked areas near nine settlements.
Another problem with the local network arose in Novodruzhesk when trying to call an ambulance. The local local network did not work for several hours. So, using the illegal Internet, the townspeople wrote a message to Starobilsk. The call was redirected from there to Luhansk. There, in turn, to Lysychansk. However, the ambulance did not arrive even after 24 hours.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
On 16 January, stabilisation schedules for power cuts will be in effect throughout most of the oblast for 24 hours. According to DTEK, emergency power cuts continue in the capital. The schedules are also not in effect in parts of the Brovarsky and Boryspilsky districts of Kyiv oblast.
As of 15 January, about 300 high-rise buildings in Kyiv remain without heating, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko. Emergency power cuts continue throughout the city. Critical infrastructure facilities are being powered by high-capacity generators and mobile boiler rooms. Utility workers continue to repair critical infrastructure damaged by the enemy 24 hours a day.
More than 1,200 resilience centres are operating in the capital, including 90 run by the State Emergency Service and 30 by the National Police. According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, they are equipped with autonomous power, heating and communications. People can get hot drinks and assistance there.
On 15 January, Kyiv City Council deputies approved draft amendments to the city’s target programme “Defender of Kyiv”, increasing funding for the Security and Defence Forces in 2026 by three billion hryvnias. The changes provide for the allocation of subsidies for material and technical support to military units. In particular, for the purchase of UAVs, electronic warfare systems, equipment and other necessary equipment.
Czech President Petr Pavel visited Kyiv. This is his third trip to Ukraine as head of state. In Kyiv, at the Wall of Remembrance, together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Petr Pavel honoured the memory of Ukrainian defenders who died.
British Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy arrived in Kyiv. Together with Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Valeriy Zaluzhny, he will hold a Centennial Partnership Forum in Kyiv on Friday. The plan is to discuss the specific content of future cooperation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom. This covers various areas, from the economy and recovery to education.
According to Kyiv Regional State Administration, on 14 January, UN System Coordinator in Ukraine Matthias Schmale visited the Boryspil community. During the visit, they discussed issues related to meeting the basic needs of the population and supporting communities. Particular attention was paid to humanitarian support for the oblast amid prolonged power outages.
Zhytomyr oblast
Throughout the week, the enemy has been systematically striking critical infrastructure in Zhytomyr oblast. According to the Regional Military Administration, on the night of 16 January, facilities in the Korosten district were again hit by russian strikes. There were no casualties or injuries. The aftermath of the enemy strikes is being dealt with.
Emergency power outages are in effect in the oblast. This is due to an acute power shortage in the energy system caused by damage from russian shelling.
In Zhytomyr oblast, power has been restored to more than 21,000 customers who were left without electricity as a result of enemy attacks. Despite the difficult situation in the power grid and unfavourable weather conditions, power engineers are working around the clock to restore electricity to people’s homes.
In 2025, thanks to the efforts of the Caritas Zhytomyr Charitable Foundation, 140 households affected by enemy shelling were restored. In addition, about 100 displaced families received assistance in modernising their homes, including roof repairs and the installation of windows and doors.
According to the head of the Regional State Administration, Vitaliy Bunechko, as part of the “Housing for Vulnerable Households” project, with financial support from UNHCR Ukraine – the UN Refugee Agency in Ukraine, it is planned to modernise about 100 residential premises.
On 15 January 2026, employees of Zhytomyr Regional Blood Centre held a blood drive in Berdychiv. The blood drive took place at the “Territory of Creative People” youth hub. In 5 hours, donors gave a total of 30 litres of blood.
Sumy oblast
Over the course of the day, from the morning of 15 January to the morning of 16 January, russian forces carried out more than 40 shelling attacks on 27 settlements across 16 territorial communities in the oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Sumskyi and Shostkynskyi districts. The enemy used artillery, mortars, FPV drones, UAVs and guided aerial bombs. Over the day, the air raid alert in the oblast lasted for 17 hours and 55 minutes.
Consequences of russian attacks in Sumy oblast as of the morning of 16 January:
- In Bilopillia community, a 35-year-old man was killed as a result of guided aerial bomb strikes. Men aged 34, 46 and 48 and women aged 26, 36, 40, 40, 47, 53, 55 and 62 were injured. A shop, a private household and a vehicle were damaged;
- In Mykolaivka rural community, premises of a shop and a medical facility were damaged;
- In Bilopillia community, a building of an educational institution, a catering facility, an administrative building, apartment buildings, private residential houses, vehicles and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
- In Seredyna-Buda community, private residential houses and non-residential buildings were destroyed, and civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged;
- In Khutir-Mykhailivkyi community, a private household and vehicles were damaged;
- In Shostka community, residential houses were destroyed and damaged, and a civilian infrastructure facility was damaged;
- In Shalyhyne community, a private residential house was destroyed;
- In Esman community, a private residential house was destroyed;
- In Znob-Novhorodske community, civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged.

Over the past day, local authorities, together with units of the State Emergency Service, the National Police and public organisations, evacuated 12 people from border communities.
Chernihiv oblast
Chernihiv Regional Military Administration reported that from 1 to 15 January, 325 russian strike drones were shot down in the skies over Chernihiv oblast. More than 300 additional drones were either lost from radar or suppressed by electronic warfare systems. During October, November and December 2025, more than 1,600 strike UAVs were destroyed in the oblast.
Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, said that on 16 January, russian forces attacked civilian infrastructure in Semenivka town by an FPV drone. Additional information is being clarified.
Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment informed that over the course of 15 January, russian forces attacked four border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, Horodnia and Snovsk. The enemy carried out six strikes by tube artillery and 23 FPV drone strikes. Twelve villages came under enemy fire.
According to the Ukrainian Red Cross Society, in the border communities of Chernihiv oblast, the evacuation of social care institutions has begun due to the deterioration of the security situation and the increased intensity of shelling. In particular, 36 residents were evacuated from Horodnia Psychoneurological Care Home.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Regional Council, reported that the enemy attacked the regional centre and Marhanets, Pokrovske and Chervonohryhorivka communities by drones and artillery.
Three people were injured: a 46-year-old woman, a 15-year-old girl and a 53-year-old man. Six apartment buildings, enterprises, 11 private houses, outbuildings, a medical facility, an administrative building, a shop, vehicles, power lines and a gas pipeline were damaged. As a result of a UAV attack in Kryvyi Rih, a fire broke out and infrastructure was damaged.
It was a heavy day. Two women were killed in Nikopol as a result of enemy artillery shelling. Overall, the enemy targeted the regional centre and Pokrovske and Marhanets communities. Seven more people were injured, including a woman who was hospitalised in serious condition. A 44-year-old man was also injured during night-time attacks and will receive outpatient treatment. Seven apartment buildings, five private houses, vehicles, a municipal enterprise, a power line and gas pipelines were damaged.
Kirovohrad oblast
In Bohdanivka village, Kropyvnytskyi region, residents paid tribute to serviceman Serhii Bokatenko. He was 49 years old. Serhii Bokatenko had been considered missing in action since 12 June 2024 following a battle near Pishchane village, Kupiansk region, Kharkiv oblast.
Poltava oblast
Construction of a community space is ongoing in Kremenchuk. The facility will provide social and psychological rehabilitation services and organise leisure and sports activities for veterans and their families.
Cherkasy oblast
In Cherkasy, funeral services were held for two servicemen. Bohdan Usenko died in russian captivity in April 2025, while Serhii Shkarban was killed on 4 January during a combat mission towards Pokrovsk.

Zaporizhzhia oblast
Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported that yesterday, 15 January, the occupiers carried out 795 strikes on 29 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Thirteen airstrikes were launched on Tavriiske, Liubytske, Rizdvianka, Zorivka, Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Zaliznychne, Vozdvyzhivka, Hirkе, Preobrazhenka, and Verkhniа Tersa. 438 UAVs of various types attacked Kushuhum, Balabyne, Zelene, Nyzhnia Khortytsia, Tavriiske, Zarichne, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Dorozhnianka, Varvarivka, and Solodke. Four MLRS attacks were carried out on Huliaipole, Novodanylivka, and Shcherbaky. 340 artillery strikes hit Zelene, Stepnohirsk, Prymorske, Stepove, Mali Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Shcherbaky, Novodanylivka, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne, Bilohiria, Dorozhnianka, Varvarivka, and Solodke. Forty-three reports of damage to residential buildings and infrastructure were received. Two people were injured as a result of enemy attacks on Zaporizhzhia region.
The General Staff reported that as of 16:00 on 16 January, 21 combat engagements took place in the areas of the settlements of Solodke, Huliaipole, Dorozhnianka, Zelene, and Varvarivka towards Huliaipole. Seven of them are still ongoing. The enemy attempted three times to break through Ukrainian defenses in the areas of Stepnohirsk and Prymorske towards Orikhiv; one battle is currently ongoing.
The General Staff also reported that on the night of 16 January, units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces struck a russian ammunition depot in temporarily occupied Prymorsk of Zaporizhzhia oblast.
The spokesperson for the Southern Defense Forces, Vladyslav Voloshyn, reported that the occupiers hid military equipment located near the nuclear reactors of the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and strengthened electronic warfare protection at the site. According to him, after a video showing russian military equipment near the nuclear reactors at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the occupiers urgently removed it.
The head of the Regional Military Administration, Ivan Fedorov, reported that today, 16 January, the 18th underground school was opened in Dniprovskyi district of Zaporizhzhia on the premises of Secondary School No. 87. It will be able to accommodate nearly 1,000 children.
Mykolaiv oblast
According to Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, yesterday morning, 15 January, the enemy carried out a ballistic strike on an open area in the suburbs of Mykolaiv, preliminarily using Iskander-M missiles. There were no casualties. In addition, the enemy attacked Ochakiv and Kutsurub communities six times with FPV drones. There were no casualties.
Kherson oblast
Kherson Regional Military Administration reported that today, 16 January, a resident of Bilozerka sought medical assistance after a russian shell struck her yard during the daytime on14 January. She sustained a blast injury and a concussion.
Police of Kherson oblast reported that yesterday, 15 January, the enemy shelled Kherson, Antonivka, Kizomys, Dniprovske, Veletenske, Sofiivka, Komyshany, Bilozerka, Stanislav, Shyroka Balka, Oleksandrivka, Sadove, Tomyna Balka, Prydniprovske, Beryslav, Dudchany, Osokorivka, Odradokamianka, Olhivka, Lvivske, Burhunka, Kozatske, and Vesele. As a result of the attacks, 14 private houses and a vehicle were damaged. One person was killed, and eight were injured due to russian aggression.

Volyn oblast
The RMA held an online meeting with representatives of Volyn business within the Dialogue Between The Authorities And Business presidential platform. They discussed logistics and road infrastructure in Volyn oblast. For the border oblast, which directly borders the European Union, this area is of strategic importance.
Zakarpattia oblast
A memorandum of cooperation was signed between Zakarpattia and Luhansk RMAs. The key goal is to join efforts to support residents of Luhansk oblast, internally displaced persons and victims of military aggression who currently live in Zakarpattia oblast. This includes providing permanent or temporary housing and access to social guarantees.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
A new Resilience Center has opened in Kosivska community. It is housed in a dual-purpose building that serves as both a shelter and a safe space for providing social and psychosocial services to community residents. The total project budget is approximately UAH 3m.
Lviv oblast
Mykolaiv was visited by the parish priest of the Greek Catholic Church of Iława and Ostrod, Father Yaroslav Hostynsky, together with the pastor of the Lutheran Church of Finland, Timo Rosgvist. They brought a car for a soldier from Mykolaiv community and humanitarian aid.
A charity concert was held in the city of Sudova Vyshnya. During the concert, over UAH 5,000 were raised.
Rivne oblast
The RMA reported that the III degree Order of Merit was awarded to Dmytro Polovian.
Ternopil oblast
The 63rd Mechanized Brigade received 7 quadcopters (2 MAVIC 3T Enterprise and 5 MAVIC Pro) from Ternopil community.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi City Council has allocated funds for the provision of rehabilitation services to military personnel and their family members, persons with disabilities and children with disabilities. The total amount is UAH 35.8m.
Chernivtsi oblast
The RMA reported that last year, Viknyanska community allocated UAH 4m for the needs of the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Andrii Sybiha, Foreign Minister, announced that Norway has sent $200m to Ukraine. The funds from Norway will be used to purchase gas and energy equipment.
Italy has begun delivering high-power industrial boilers from 550 to 3,000 kW worth $2.15m. The devices will be delivered to the regions most affected by the war.
