Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

In the Southern Slobozhansky direction, Russian forces conducted assaults throughout the day; four engagements are ongoing, the General Staff reported as of 22:00.

Fighting is also ongoing in the Kupiansk direction. Today, Russian forces attacked there six times.

Over the past day, 164 combat engagements were recorded.

In the Southern Slobozhansky direction, Ukrainian troops repelled 12 enemy attacks in the areas of Starytsia, Prylipka, Vovchansk, Vovchanski Khutory, Chuhunivka, Ambarne, Dehtiarnе, and toward Kruhlyi.

In the Kupiansk direction, two enemy attacks took place yesterday. Ukrainian defenders repelled assault actions toward Petropavlivka.

At night, an enemy strike was recorded in the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv, reported Head of the Regional Military Administration Oleh Syniehubov. Preliminary information indicates a UAV hit a private residential house. People may be trapped under the rubble. State Emergency Service units and medics are heading to the site. According to preliminary data, a 20-year-old woman was killed. A 41-year-old woman suffered an acute stress reaction.

On the evening of January 17, Russian forces attacked Kharkiv twice with “Molniya”-type drones. Both hits were recorded in the Slobidskyi district of the city. The first drone struck a non-residential building, the second hit a critical infrastructure facility. According to Mayor Ihor Terekhov, as of the evening there were no reports of fatalities or injuries.

In Borivske, on January 17, a woman was killed as a result of an FPV drone strike, reported Head of the Shevchenkove community Serhii Starikov. The village is not among the settlements where mandatory evacuation has been announced.

“Molniya”-type UAVs struck the settlement of Zolochiv at around 12:20, reported community head Viktor Kovalenko. Two houses and outbuildings were damaged. No one was injured. At 13:05, a “Molniya” UAV struck the roof of a shop in Zolochiv, Kovalenko added.

A 42-year-old woman and a 51-year-old man in Starovirivka, Kupiansk district, sustained injuries and burns after a Russian drone attacked a car earlier today, the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported. Two more people were injured due to a drone strike on Zolochiv. According to the prosecutor’s office, two shops and a police service vehicle were damaged.

Preliminary reports indicate that Russians attacked a critical infrastructure facility in Kharkiv using “Tornado-S” multiple launch rocket systems, the regional prosecutor’s office said. Strikes on the city occurred from 14:10 to 14:30.

As of 10:50, emergency and rescue operations at the site of an apartment explosion in the Saltivskyi district of Kharkiv, which occurred on the night of January 17, have been completed, reported the Kharkiv Regional State Emergency Service. 49 rescuers and 13 units of specialized equipment were involved.

Due to Russian shelling and blackouts in 2022, the Kharkiv Institute of Endocrine Pathology Problems lost nearly half of its genetic blood sample collection, which had been gathered over 15 years. This was a direct consequence of the war for Ukrainian science and medicine. By early 2026, scientists managed to restore and even exceed the volume of the lost collection. The genetic bank is critically important during the war: it enables more effective treatment selection for Ukrainian patients, taking into account genetic and social characteristics further affected by trauma, stress, and the consequences of hostilities. The Ukrainian experience gained during the war has become unique and is already being used in international scientific research.

Donetsk oblast

Russian forces reduced the number of attacks toward the city of Lyman to four. The Russian army attempted to advance near Novovodiane, Kolodiazi, and toward Dibrova, the General Staff reported.

The 63rd Separate Mechanized Brigade “Steel Lions” has been holding Lyman and the settlements of the Lyman community in northern Donetsk region for 2 years and 8 months, restraining the Russian offensive. According to the military, since March 2023 the unit has eliminated about 3,000 Russian troops and destroyed approximately 400 pieces of equipment, largely thanks to drones.

In 2025, the brigade documented the destruction of 4,200 occupiers, the wounding of about 2,000, and the capture of 123 Russian servicemen. In this sector, according to fighters’ estimates, the casualty ratio reaches 1 to 50 to Russia’s disadvantage. Warfare in the Lyman area has transformed into a war of drones, engineering solutions, and intellect—infantry assaults are increasingly being replaced by small-group infiltration attempts. Russian forces are trying to seep into the areas of Lyman, Torske, and Zarichne, but the city has not been captured; the Defense Forces do not allow street fighting, destroying the enemy on the approaches. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in the region is approaching critical: crossings over the Siverskyi Donets are regularly destroyed, most civilians have evacuated, and those who remain survive in basements under the constant threat of drones. Lyman remains a key defensive stronghold: holding it restrains further Russian advances toward Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, and Izium. The military emphasize that the fall of Lyman would create conditions for a broader Russian advance in northern Donetsk region.

In the Kostiantynivka direction, Russian forces carried out 18 attacks. In the Pokrovsk direction, over the past day Ukrainian troops repelled 49 assaults.

In the Kostiantynivka direction, Russian troops are attempting to bypass the city and cut Ukrainian logistics. On January 16, Russian fighters tried to rush into Kostiantynivka on motorcycles, but were detected in time and neutralized, said Major Viacheslav Shutenko, commander of the unmanned systems battalion “Legion North” of the 44th Separate Mechanized Brigade.

In the Sloviansk direction, the situation is worsening near Dronivka. Russians are attempting to force the Siverskyi Donets and advance toward Zakitne and Kryva Luka, the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade reported.

Ukrainian forces have refuted claims by the Russian Ministry of Defense about the capture of the settlement of Pryvillia in Donetsk region, the 30th Separate Mechanized Brigade named after Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi reported.

Two days ago, Russians raised a tricolor between Novomarkove and Markove; the Armed Forces of Ukraine destroyed it with an FPV drone, said Dmytro Zaporozhets, spokesperson for the 11th Army Corps. In the area of responsibility of the 11th Army Corps, the Russian army has reduced assault activity but increased the use of artillery, FPV drones, and aviation. The AFU destroy at least 70 Russian soldiers daily.

In the area of occupied Donetsk, Ukrainian forces struck a storage and preparation site for Russian UAVs, the General Staff of the AFU reported.

At 22:15, using “Molniya-2” UAVs, Russian forces struck the private sector of the Kramatorsk community. Outbuildings were damaged. At 01:55, Russian forces also struck the private sector with “Smerch” MLRS, damaging four residential houses.

Throughout January 16, police recorded 1,497 enemy strikes along the frontline and against residential areas.

Nine settlements came under fire: the cities of Dobropillia, Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka; the settlement of Raihorodok; and the villages of Brusivka, Nadiia, Novoselivka, Rubtsi.

Twenty-six civilian objects were damaged, including 15 residential buildings.

In Druzhkivka, enemy FPV drones struck two civilian vehicles; one person was injured.

One person was wounded as a result of an FPV drone strike in the village of Nadiia, Pokrovsk district.

Kramatorsk came under seven attacks: the enemy struck the city with a KAB-250 aerial bomb and drones. Four private houses, an administrative building, an outbuilding, a non-residential premises, and a garage were damaged.

In Raihorodok, Russians dropped a KAB-250 aerial bomb; nine private houses and an outbuilding were damaged.

Over the course of three days, 31 residents were evacuated from Druzhkivka, Oleksiievo-Druzhkivka, and other settlements in Donetsk region that are constantly under Russian shelling, the Military Administration reported.

The dog Pavlovych, who had been living at military positions, and a cat from servicemen in Kostiantynivka were evacuated by volunteers from UAnimals, according to a statement by the humanitarian movement for the rescue of animals and the environment.

Agents of the resistance movement “ATESH” report that the Kremlin is preparing to transfer Mariupol and the surrounding region under the full control of “Akhmat” security units. Additional Kadyrov-affiliated formations are already being redeployed to the city to ensure monopolization of local resources and to strengthen Grozny’s influence in the occupied region.

In temporarily occupied Mariupol, a blackout occurred on January 16 after drones struck the Azovska substation. Most districts of the city were left without electricity and heating. Mangush and Yalta are also without power, the city council reported.

Luhansk oblast

Towards Lyman and Sloviansk, russian forces attempted to assault the positions of Ukraine’s Defense Forces six times. In Luhansk region, the enemy tried to advance from the direction of Novovodyane. Over the past day, the occupiers shelled Ukrainian defenders 8 times with mortars, twice with automatic grenade launchers, and also used 16 UAVs and FPV drones.

The occupation “ombudswoman of the lnr” claimed a supposed increase in the number of residents of Popasna — to 252 people. At the same time, various structures of the occupation administration have for years cited nearly identical figures (250–260 people) that do not even align with one another. For comparison, before the full-scale invasion, about 20,000 people lived in Popasna. The city was almost completely destroyed.

Russia is financing the preparation of young people from occupied Luhansk region for war under the guise of “developing civil society.” Among the winners of the Russian president’s grant competition is the “Parachuting Federation of the lnr” with the project “Wings of Free Russia,” which will involve cadets and students of the Civil Defense Institute. In effect, this is another stage of the military indoctrination of youth in the temporarily occupied territories.
