War in Ukraine today: latest news, 15 February 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1088th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

Ukraine’s defence forces are holding back the offensive of russian occupiers. Terrorists continue to destroy Ukrainian cities and villages with missile, air and artillery strikes. 

The defence forces are taking the necessary measures to prevent the enemy from advancing deep into Ukrainian territory.

The enemy has become more active. On 15 February, there were 176 combat engagements. 

Enemy artillery and mortar fire affected communities in Chernihiv and Sumy oblasts, such as Oleksandrivka, Hremiachka, Ponomarenky, Bila Bereza and Progres.

Towards Kharkiv, there were four firefights near Vovchansk and Tykhe, and one battle is currently underway.

Towards Kupiansk, russian occupiers attacked the positions of the Defence Forces 35 times near Dvorichna, Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kolisnykivka, Lozova and towards Novoozynove, with 23 ongoing engagements.

Towards  Lyman, the invading army carried out 19 attacks on Ukrainian positions near the localities of Zelenyi Hai, Novoiehorivka, Hrekivka, Kolodiazi, Yampolivka, Terny, Torske and Dibrova. Nine firefights are still ongoing.

Towards  Siversk, three enemy assaults were repelled by Ukrainian defenders, six combat engagements are ongoing, and the occupiers are trying to advance in the vicinity of Verkhnekamianske and Ivan-Daryivka.

Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders repelled ten attacks by russian invaders, the enemy is trying to break through to Predtechyne, Stupochky, Bila Hora and in the vicinity of Chasovyi Yar. Seventeen combat engagements were completed.

Towards Toretsk, Ukrainian defenders repelled eight enemy assaults in the vicnity of Toretsk, Diliivka and Krymske, and seven battles are still ongoing. 

Towards Pokrovsk, russian invaders made 47 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from their positions in the vicinity of Zelene Pole, Tarasivka, Vodiane Druhe, Myroliubivka, Yelyzavetivka, Promin, Lysivka, Dachenske, Shevchenko, Pishchane, Kotlyne, Udachne, Nadiivka, Andriivka and Udachne. The defence forces are holding back the attack and repelled 24 enemy attacks, 23 combat engagements are still ongoing.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy tried to break through the defences of Ukrainian defenders nine times in the areas of Zelenivka and Velyka Novosilka. Six firefights are ongoing.

Towards Huliaipole, Huliaipole, Zaliznychne, Verkhnya Tersa and Kopani came under attack.

In Kursk oblast, there were 11 combat engagements, four of which are still ongoing. In addition, the enemy carried out eight air strikes, dropping eight guided bombs, and fired 182 times at the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

The situation in other sectors remained unchanged.


The National Resistance Centre informs that russians have introduced a new stage of repression against Ukrainians in the TOT. From now on, ‘incompetent security forces, including a small number of people with criminal records, will be in charge of managing settlements, dealing with “economic issues” and other activities.’ 

The State Emergency Service states that in Zaporizhzhia oblast, rescuers used a robot to destroy an enemy kamikaze drone.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline 

According to the RMA, towards Kharkiv sector, four firefights took place near Vovchansk and Tykhe, and one battle is still ongoing.

Towards Kupiansk, russian troops attacked the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine 35 times near Dvorichna, Petropavlivka, Stepova Novoselivka, Kolisnykivka, Lozova and towards Novoozynove, with 23 ongoing engagements.

Towards Kharkiv, one firefight took place in the vicinity of Hlyboke the day before.

Towards Kupiansk, four enemy attacks occurred. Defence forces fought near Zahryzove and Hlushkivka.

Shelling 

The day before, at 23:00, the enemy attacked Chuhuiv region, Khotimlia village. An outbuilding burned down as a result of a UAV hit.

At 21:43, the enemy attacked Kharkiv region, the village of Solonitsiivka. A Shahed UAV hit an open area. There were no casualties and no destructions.

Around 13:00, the enemy attacked Bohodukhiv region, Ivashky village. The shelling damaged the gas network. 

Around 11:16, the enemy attacked Kharkiv region, Borshchova village. As a result of the shelling, a country house in a garden association caught fire. There was no information about the victims.

Around 10:00, the enemy attacked Kharkiv region, Borshchova village. An attack by an FPV drone was recorded. There were no casualties.

Other

The regional public organisation ‘Union of ATO Veterans’ informs that Kharkiv announced the development of a ‘Veteran’s Card’ – a special programme of discounts and benefits in the areas of culture, rehabilitation, service and sales of goods, and sports. It is expected to be an analogue of the Kharkiv Citizen Card.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The General Staff informs that the russian army continues to attack along the entire Pokrovsk frontline, with the most battles taking place here yesterday – 36 out of 112 along the entire frontline.  

Defence forces continue to repel attacks in Chasiv Yar and Toretsk. The occupiers also attacked from the flanks of Toretsk – near Krymske and Shcherbynivka.     

Ukrainian defenders repelled 14 attacks towards Novopavlivka. On this section of the frontline, russia tried to advance near Burlatske, to the border with Zaporizhzhia oblast, and also attacked near Kostiantynopil.  

Andrii Polukhin, Spokesman for the 24th Brigade, says that russia is trying to destroy the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal to be able to transport equipment in Chasiv Yar and attack urban areas.

The Khortytsia military unit reported that in the area of Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk oblast, Ukrainian troops discovered and destroyed a Russian anti-aircraft missile system Strela-10. .

Shelling

The RMA reported that the russian army shelled Kostiantynivka with artillery at around 06:30. A private house, cars, and a garage were damaged, and there are no reports of casualties or injuries.

Police recorded 3,764 attacks on the frontline and residential areas in Kostiantynivka, Lyman, Toretsk and Novodmytrivka village. Twenty civilian objects were destroyed, including 12 residential buildings.

In Novodmytrivka, russians attacked a civilian excavator with a drone, injuring the driver. 

The enemy attacked Kostiantynivka with 5 FAB-250 bombs, Smerch MLRS and artillery, damaging 12 private houses, a petrol station, a civilian car, two power lines and a gas pipeline.

The occupiers shelled Lyman with Grad multiple rocket launchers, damaging a power line.

There were reports of two civilians being injured in Katerynivka, Kramatorsk region, as a result of a russian drone strike on a private house on 13 February.

Luhansk oblast

According to the RMA, the enemy exerted pressure towards both Siversk and Lyman yesterday. Enemy attacks were repelled in Bilohorivka and near Hrekivka. During the assaults, russians were supported by aviation and artillery. Thus, they opened fire eight times from the artillery. They sent 211 drones towards fortifications of Ukrainian defenders. 

Despite four promises, three of which were made in the last two months, the occupation authorities are not trying to pay off salary arrears for 2014-2015 to public sector employees of the so-called ‘lpr’ as soon as possible. The amount of debt repayment remains at a critically low level. This was noted even by the prosecutor’s office of the russian federation. The money was allegedly allocated repeatedly, however, people have received only 2.19% of the total amount. Teachers, doctors, miners, and light industry workers are still waiting for their money. More than 60,000 people are still hoping for billions of rubles that have once again disappeared.

In Siverskodonetsk, economics students are offered jobs as cashiers in a store, but there are few such jobs available. The lpr Employment Centre organised a career guidance tour for students of economics at a higher education institution opened by the occupiers in this town. They were introduced to the work of a cashier in a matryoshka store so that young people could test the theoretical knowledge they had gained in lectures in practice, and were invited to work.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

On the night of 14 February, a russian attack drone hit a shelter over the destroyed fourth power unit of Chornobyl nuclear power plant. The State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management reported that as of the morning of 15 February, no radiation leakage was recorded at the site of Chornobyl nuclear power plant and the New Safe Confinement. It is reported that the fire in the aggregate of the outer lining of the confinement arch is still being extinguished. As of 07.00, 40 rescuers and 8 units of equipment are involved in firefighting. Through damage of up to 15 square metres was recorded. 

The Ministry of Health announced that the National Children’s Specialised Hospital Okhmatdyt has launched a tender for works to protect the toxicology building No. 3, hit by a russian missile on 8 July 2024, from external impact. The hospital continues to operate in buildings that were not damaged or only partially damaged. The modern building is being restored and preparations are underway to restore the historic buildings – the administrative and toxicology facilities.

In Kyiv oblast, an enemy UAV was found on the ice of a pond. It was spotted by citizens at a distance of about 300 metres from the shore. It turned out to be the remains of a Gerbera unmanned aerial vehicle. The SES divers pulled the remains ashore and handed over to the experts for further investigation.

The RMA reported that the State Agency for Reconstruction and Development of Infrastructure is restoring more than 60 residential buildings in Borodyanka. Work has already begun on 45 sites. In addition, administrative buildings, a school and a cultural institution are being restored. The work is scheduled to be completed by autumn 2025.

The Department of Social Protection of Kyiv oblast reported that Kyiv oblast has received more than 254,000 internally displaced persons and continues to provide them with the necessary support. Social housing programmes for internally displaced persons have already been implemented in Boryspil, Irpin and Tomashivka territorial communities. Internally displaced persons can also take advantage of a new instrument of support from the state – a subsidy for renting housing for IDPs.

Oleksandr Androshchuk, a veteran from Kyiv oblast, won a gold medal in snowboarding at the Invictus Games 2025. The Ukrainian Armed Forces soldier and veteran of the russian-Ukrainian war became the champion in the men’s novice category with lower limb impairment, ISB 1-2-3 (standing), covering the course in 16.19 seconds. In addition to snowboarding, Oleksandr participates in rowing, swimming, rugby and skeleton competitions.

The Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine announced that the exhibition ‘Artists at the Front’ will open in Kyiv on 18 February. This is the first exhibition within the Art Resistance art project, initiated by the National Union of Artists of Ukraine together with the ABC Art Gallery. It will feature works by artists who are currently at the frontline.

Zhytomyr oblast

On 13 February, Korostyshiv community hosted an expanded meeting Zhytomyr oblast is energy efficient’ dedicated to energy sustainability and alternative energy development in the region. The event brought together more than 150 participants. The discussion focused on the Energy Sustainability Passport of Zhytomyr oblast, the regional programme for the installation of solar power plants and energy storage systems in educational, healthcare and social institutions for 2025-2026.

Sumy oblast

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reports that on 13 February, the Air Force eliminated a russian strongpoint from which drones were launched for attacks on Sumy oblast. The object was located near Yelyzavetivka village in Kursk oblast. It was a platoon strongpoint of the 28th Rifle Battalion of the 60th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade of the russian armed forces.

The State Border Guard Service of Ukraine informs that in Sumy oblast, border guards used small arms to destroy five advanced russian FPV-drones on fiber optics. Recently, the russian military has begun to use such drones more actively. They cannot be intercepted by conventional electronic warfare and radio electronic warfare means.

The City Council reported that the enemy attacked Stetska Starostat in Sumy oblast by a UAV. Preliminary information indicates that no people were injured. About 20 windows and two gables were damaged. The consequences of the strike are being clarified.

The Regional Military Administration informed that during the night and morning of 15 February, Yunakivka and Velyka Pysarivka communities in Sumy oblast were under fire from the russian military. Eight explosions were recorded: 3 FPV-drone strikes and 5 mortar strikes.

As a result of russian shelling on 14 February, ten private houses in Sumy community, four in Yunakivka community, and one in Krasnopillia community were damaged.

The russian military carried out 49 shelling attacks in Sumy oblast. A total of 119 explosions were recorded. The enemy executed 1 air strike, 1 UAV strike, 6 FPV-drone strikes, 51 mortar strikes, 12 artillery strikes, 25 multiple launch rocket system strikes, 2 RPG strikes, and dropped 10 explosive devices from UAVs. Eleven communities were affected: Sumy, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropilia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Nova Slobidka, Esman, Seredyna-Buda, and Znob-Novhorod.

Since the beginning of 2025, 19 people have died, and 23 have been injured in Sumy community. According to the City Council, 31 apartment buildings and 75 private households have been damaged. In 2024, 67 residents died, including three children; 23 people were injured. Last year, 132 apartment buildings and 458 private households were damaged.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that volunteers from the mobile fire groups in Sumy oblast received 13 cash certificates for destroying air targets. Since the beginning of the year, more than 400 UAVs that the russians directed at Sumy oblast and deeper into Ukraine have been hit and destroyed by mobile fire groups of volunteer formations together with calculations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Five generators were received by the border communities in Sumy oblast — Hlukhiv, Vorozhba, Seredyna-Buda, and Yunakivka — with the help of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Chernihiv oblast

On 14 February, the russian military attacked two border communities in Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka and Snovsk. They conducted mortar fire (7 strikes), barrel artillery fire (2 strikes), dropped explosives from UAVs (2 strikes), and used FPV-drones (2 strikes). Explosions were heard towards seven villages.

In Kostobobriv, Semenivka community, a fire broke out in an administrative building as a result of an FPV-drone attack.

Demolition experts from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine discovered and destroyed a warhead of a russian Uragan multiple launch rocket system in Chernihiv oblast. The munition was found near Pidlisne village. Specialists additionally surveyed the surrounding area.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, says that last night the enemy attacked Nikopol region again. The occupiers attacked Marganets with Grad multiple rocket launchers.

During the day, the enemy attacked Nikopol region several times with artillery, and also launched a kamikaze drone. They targeted Nikopol and Marhanets community. A private enterprise, a funeral service, a fire station, a private house, an unused building, infrastructure, a gas pipeline and a power line were damaged.

In Kryvyi Rih, a minute of silence was held on Volodymyra Velykoho Street. Relatives of the killed and captured soldiers and concerned citizens came out to honour the military.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, informs that warrior and athlete Arsen Riaboshapko won silver in skiing at the Invictus Games.

In Kropyvnytskyi, relatives of captured and missing Ukrainian servicemen came out to protest against the ‘Don’t be silent, captivity kills’ campaign. Families and friends of the missing soldiers from the beginning of the full-scale invasion held flags and photos of the missing and captured.

Kropyvnytskyi hosted a charity race ‘Run in Love with Running’ to raise money to buy a car for members of the city’s running community who are currently defending Ukraine. The youngest participant in the race, according to the co-organiser, was ten years old, and the oldest was 70.

Poltava oblast

Schools in Poltava community have completed renovations of the ‘Defence of Ukraine’ course. Equipment for tactical medicine, marksmanship, robotics and other areas of this subject is now being purchased for the schools.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, at around 11:30am, russian tactical aviation launched guided bombs over Zaporizhzhia oblast.

As reported by the State Emergency Service, a russian kamikaze drone was neutralized by explosive experts in one of the settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 14 February, russian forces launched 468 attacks on 10 cities and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy used 279 drones of various modifications to strike Lysohirka, Malokaterynivka, Kamianske, Stepnohirsk, Shcherbaky, Huliaipole, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Novodarivka and Charivne.

Mykolaiv oblast

Referring to the RMA, during the night of 15 February, the russian military launched a massive attack on Mykolaiv oblast by Shahed drones. Air defence forces engaged the targets, but falling debris caused a fire in Mykolaiv oblast. The shockwave from the explosion damaged a private house, an educational institution, a boiler facility, a water purification station, an administrative building and a medical clinic in one settlement.

Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, informed that on 14 February, russian forces attacked Bashtanka region by a missile, likely an S-300 or S-400. The missile exploded in an open area, but the blast wave damaged windows, doors and roofs of around 20 private houses.

Odesa oblast

According to the Air Forces of Ukraine During the night of 15 February, attack drones were detected over the Black Sea, moving toward Odesa, Chornomorsk and Pivdenne.

Kherson oblast

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, said that russian forces shelled a school in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. A shell hit the school area.  There were no casualties reported.

According to the RMA, in the morning, russian forces attacked the car of volunteer Tetiana Akhtemenko by a drone in Antonivka, near Kherson. Tetiana was planning to evacuate 3 residents from the suburb with the help of another volunteer, but after the russian attack, the police managed to evacuate them all to safety.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that a 14-year-old boy was evacuated from russian-occupied Kherson oblast. He had been living in a village with his grandmother, while his father was waiting for him in Ukrainian-controlled territory. The child is now safe and receiving necessary medical and psychological support.

As reported by the RMA, on the evening of 14 February, russian forces shelled Chervonyi Maiak, damaging residential houses, a school and a critical infrastructure facility. There were no casualties reported.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, stated that on 14 February, one person was killed and 10 injured due to russian attacks on Kherson oblast. The russian military targeted social infrastructure and residential areas across 35 settlements. The attacks damaged 3 high-rise buildings, 6 private houses, warehouses, agricultural equipment and vehicles.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting of the regional commission on the perpetuation of the memory of participants in the Anti-Terrorist Operation, victims of war and political repressions. The commission members unanimously supported all the submitted applications.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 50 packages with grocery sets and 90 loaves of bread. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (1,090 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., Valentyn Stefanio, Myroslav Slovianin and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Police officers of Ivano-Frankivsk Region Police Chief Inspectorate responded to the call of the Biopharma Plasma Blood Donation Center in Ivano-Frankivsk and organized another blood donation campaign. For 2 months, police officers of the oblast will donate blood components to replenish supplies that are now desperately needed by wounded defenders and civilians.

Ivano-Frankivsk community donated 40 FPV drones to the 114th Territorial Defense Brigade.

Lviv oblast

The RMA held a meeting with Katarina Maternova, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the European Union to Ukraine. They discussed support for IDPs.

The opening of the 1st of 8 social houses intended for temporary accommodation of IDPs undergoing rehabilitation at the UNBROKEN center took place in Lviv. Residents will be able to live here with their families for 6 to 12 months. During this time, they will be under the supervision of doctors and will receive all necessary assistance, including emergency care.

In Lviv, rehabilitation at a recreation center was organized for the wives of fallen soldiers. For 10 days, 30 wives of fallen defenders had the opportunity to relax at the health center.

Rivne oblast

A training for military psychologists Trauma-Informed Approach In The Work Of Psychologists was held in Rivne. The event included practical exercises for stabilization, self-regulation and stress relief.

Ternopil oblast

Ivanna Remenets, widow of the deceased Ternopil resident, received a certificate for an apartment. The family’s apartment, which suffered significant damage after being hit by an enemy drone, is uninhabitable.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi community allocated one-time financial assistance for 493 active military personnel. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 4m.

Junior Sergeant Vitaliii Sachuk and Senior Sergeant Denys Tsios, Defenders from Khmelnytskyi oblast, were awarded with the II degree For Courage Order (posthumously).

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA held a regular meeting with the IDP Council. They discussed the housing rental subsidy for IDPs introduced by the Ministry of Social Policy on 29 January 2025.  

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Norway allocates 1.2bn kroner to support Ukraine’s air defense. Norway will purchase air defense missiles from the US.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Mark Rutte, NATO Secretary General. They discussed coordination with NATO member countries to form a common position on ending the war and forcing russia to move closer to a just and lasting peace.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office, met with Keith Kellogg, US Presidential Special Representative for Ukraine and russia. They discussed coordination of work to achieve lasting peace.

Vladyslav Vlasiuk, Presidential Advisor and Plenipotentiary for Sanctions Policy, met with Jonathan Conlon, Ambassador of Ireland to Ukraine. They discussed cooperation to prevent weapons components from entering russia in circumvention of sanctions.
