War in Ukraine today: latest news, 13 May, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 810th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:

About 140 combat clashes were recorded during the day.

In total, the enemy launched 6 missiles and 64 air strikes, fired 51 rockets at the positions of our troops and settlements.

Towards Kharkiv, the number of combat encounters increased to 13. Under heavy enemy attack, our units act decisively, inflict fire damage on the enemy, and increase their efforts. They are attached to occupied positions, equip spare positions.

Defence forces facilitate the evacuation of people from affected settlements.

Towards Kupiansk, during the current day, 15 attacks were repelled by our soldiers.

Towards Lyman, the number of combat clashes increased to 9.

Towards Siversk, the enemy launched 15 attacks, without success.

Towards Pokrovsk, the number of enemy attacks increased to 33.

Towards Kurakhove, the enemy, with the support of aviation, tried 13 times to break through the defence of our troops, but was unsuccessful.

Towards Vremivka, our defenders repelled a total of 11 attacks in the areas of Vodiane and Staromaiorske settlements.

In the rest of the directions, the situation has not changed.

The defence forces monitor the actions of the enemy, react to changes in the situation. Operational decisions are made by the command to ensure control on the battlefield.

During the day, the aviation of the Defense Forces and units of the missile forces struck 1 artillery piece, 1 radio-electronic warfare station, 1 control post, 1 ammunition warehouse, and 2 areas of concentration of enemy personnel, weapons, and military equipment.

Our soldiers also shot down an enemy Su-25.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that after breaking through the border in the north of Kharkiv oblast, 4,000 residents were evacuated. People are provided with support according to a roadmap developed in 2022. 70% of evacuees have accommodation, mostly staying with relatives and friends. Humanitarian, medical, psychological and legal assistance are also provided.

About half of the North Korean missiles launched by russia at Ukraine went off trajectory and exploded in mid-air, and in such cases, no debris was found. Prosecutors have examined only the wreckage of 21 of the approximately 50 North Korean ballistic missiles that russia attempted to launch at Ukraine from late December to late February. The last recorded launch of a North Korean KN-23 missile at Ukraine was on 27 February. Three missiles were launched at Kyiv and its surrounding areas. The other missiles targeted Kharkiv, Poltava, Donetsk and Kirovohrad oblasts. The attacks by North Korean weapons killed 24 people and injured 115.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as of 2pm on 13 May, russia has launched 11 attacks towards Kharkiv, with two combat engagements ongoing. The enemy continues to try to force the Defence Forces units out of their positions but they had partial success near Lukianets. The enemy’s advance has been repelled.

Also russians launched 8 airstrikes near Udy, Vovchansk, Lyptsi, Hrafske and Vesele.

To reinforce the troops, the previously created reserves were moved towards Kharkiv. Depending on the situation, the grouping will continue to be reinforced. The troops are provided with the necessary amount of munitions.

Since the beginning of the day, russian losses in this axis amounted to 97 people, while the loss of weapons and military equipment amounted to 8 units.

General of the Ukrainian Army Mykola Malomuzh stated that by conducting offensive actions in the north of Kharkiv oblast, the russian military is trying to spread out the defence forces and weaken their positions on the eastern and southern fronts, to enable more intense shelling of Kharkiv and to demonstrate their military power to Ukraine’s western partners.

Oleh Syniehubov, Head of Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the enemy continues to advance in certain areas. The situation is quite difficult, however, controlled by our military.

The enemy has changed the tactics of massive offensives, as it was at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, to advance in small groups. They are moving through forest belts, plantations and bushes.

Fighting also continues for Lukyantsi of Lyptsi community. A slight advance of the enemy troops is recorded, but our soldiers are fighting intensively to hold this settlement.

Dmytro Chubenko, Spokesman of the Regional Prosecutor’s Office, said that the enemy is trying to capture Vovchansk, but the Defence Forces are fighting back. Small arms fire continues on the northern outskirts of the city. In total, since the beginning of active hostilities, our soldiers have killed over 1,000 invaders. Up to 200 people remain in Vovchansk.

Residents, who had been held captive by russians since 11 May, were evacuated from the city. The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation over the captivity of the residents of Vovchansk community. According to him, investigators found that the people spent two days in the basement, were not allowed out and were forced to provide medical care to russians.

Oleksii Kharkivskyi, Chief Patrol Officer of Vovchansk Police Department, noted that 10 police crews are working to evacuate people.

The press service of the regional administration reported that 4 people were injured on the border in Kharkiv oblast on 13 May. According to the report, 5 people in Vovchansk and a woman in Lyptsi were injured.

Kharkiv Police Chief Volodymyr Tymoshko reported that last night, from about 8pm to 6am, police recorded at least 9 airstrikes in Kharkiv oblast, mostly on Vovchansk community. According to him, almost constant artillery shelling of Lyptsi and Vovchansk communities, Kupiansk region, and Kozacha Lopan was also recorded at night.

Referring to the press service of Kharkiv police, during the day, the invaders attacked a farm in Korotych, Kharkiv region. One civilian was killed. The number of injured increased to four people. According to the press service, these are men aged 29, 30, 39 and 73, and they were hospitalised. The press service of the State Emergency Service in Kharkiv oblast said that two fires broke out as a result of the missile strike on Korotych, the damaged enterprise and nearby grass were on fire.

At the same time, following an enemy attack on Lyptsi, medics helped a 71-year-old woman who was hospitalised in a medical facility.

There were no attacks on Kharkiv over the day. More than 30 settlements in Kharkiv oblast suffered artillery and mortar attacks: Lyptsi, Vesele, Neskuchne, Starytsia, Zarichne, Zelenyi Yar, Hontarivka, Tomakhivka, Yurchenkove, Vovchansk and others. Lyptsi, Neskuchne, Starytsia and others were vhit by airstrikes.

At 6:25pm, a house burned down as a result of shelling in Mali Prokhody village, Kharkiv region.

At 1pm, one private house was damaged and a 46-year-old woman injured in Dvorichna as a result of the shelling with MRLs.

At 10:30, a municipal educational institution was hit by an anti-aircraft gun in the village of Lyptsi, Kharkiv district.

In Izium, a 69-year-old man was injured as a result of the detonation of a munition.

On 12 May, private houses were damaged and 7 people injured as a result of a series of massive shelling of Vovchansk with various types of weapons.

Yesterday Ukrainian troops repelled 9 attacks towards Kupiansk, including near Petropavlivka and Berestove.

Also Ukrainian troops repelled 12 attacks towards Kharkiv, specifically near Lukiantsi, Vovchansk, Buhruvatka and others.

So far, 1695 locals have been evacuated from Chuhuiv region, 2589 from Kharkiv region, 44 from Bohodukhiv region and 1434 people have been evacuated by volunteers. A total of 5762 people have been evacuated. 

Donetsk oblast

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since the beginning of the day, more than 70 russian attacks have been repelled in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. The largest number of combat engagements were towards Kramatorsk, 27.

The Defence Forces of Ukraine shot down a russian Su-25 attack aircraft in Donetsk oblast today.

Medics from the 95th separate air assault brigade have deployed and equipped a stabilisation point towards Lyman on their own. Injured soldiers from the frontline are brought here to provide first aid and stabilise their condition.

Oleksii Tarasenko, Deputy Commander of the 2nd assault battalion of the 5th Kyiv separate assault brigade, informed that the frontline around Chasiv Yar is not moving in any direction. In recent weeks, the offensive capabilities of the russian army have been destroyed around the town.

On the front line near Torske and Kreminna, our defenders destroyed 10 units of enemy armoured vehicles. The attack was repelled by soldiers of the 63rd Brigade with the assistance of units from the 45th and 60th Brigades.

The operational situation in the oblast as of the morning of 13 May is as follows:

Towards Pokrovsk, in Kurakhove community, 5 houses burned down and 10 were damaged in Kurakhivka, a house was damaged in Kurakhove. In Selydove, 2 five-storey buildings and an administrative building were damaged. In Novohrodivka, 9 apartment buildings and 3 private houses were damaged. In Pokrovsk, 2 administrative buildings were destroyed and 4 apartment buildings damaged.

Towards Kramatorsk, in Lyman, 2 people were injured and 4 private houses damaged; also in the community a person was killed in Dibrova, 2 houses destroyed in Zarichne, 2 houses damaged in Torske. The enemy dropped a guided aerial bomb on Katerynivka of Illinivka community, causing no casualties.

Towards Bakhmut, a house was damaged in Shcherbynivka of Toretsk community and a non-residential building in Siversk.

In total, russians attacked settlements in Donetsk oblast 19 times over the day. 257 people, including 30 children, were evacuated from the frontline.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Military Administration, confirmed that yesterday russians killed 2 civilians: in Dibrova and Ivanivka. Another 2 people were injured in the oblast over the day.

Luhansk oblast

The invaders do not stop shelling Nevske. Yesterday they used mortars, artillery, cannon and rocket launchers. Artillery and mortar attacks were recorded in Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka. Near this village, russians tried to hit our positions with 10 drones.

The invaders launched airstrikes on Tverdokhlibove and Bilohorivka.

The enemy attacked near Andriivka, Stelmakhivka, Novoiehorivka, Makiivka, Bilohorivka and Serebrianka forestry.

During the week, Luhansk police recorded the destruction of four houses in Novoliubivka that were damaged by this year’s air strikes.

In recent days, russians have destroyed and damaged at least 9 households in Nevske.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that on 13 May, an ammunition depot caught on fire in Sorokyne in the temporarily occupied part of Luhansk oblast.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that Kyiv had sent aid to the AFU. 150 FPV drones, 4 Mavic quadcopters, and 6 electronic warfare systems are being sent to Kharkiv oblast. Another 350 FPV drones are to be delivered in the coming days. All the equipment was purchased with non- budget funds.

The State Border Guard Service reported that a wild horse of the Przewalski breed had exploded on a mine in Chornobyl zone of Kyiv oblast. Recently, a border patrol heard an explosion within the Chornobyl exclusion zone. To clarify the circumstances, they launched a drone over the territory of Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve, which was occupied by russian troops at the beginning of the invasion. This type of horse is considered to be extinct in nature. The relevant organisations were informed about the death of the rare animal.

Over the weekend, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard held several events in de-occupied Borodianka. At a meeting for future first-graders and their parents called ‘Preparing for School’, parents learned what knowledge is needed for their child to successfully enter school and what skills they can learn during classes at the HAB. In addition, two groups of children were given unique Paw to Palm canine therapy classes, which promote a positive psychosocial impact on children and their parents through interaction with specially trained dogs.

Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn informed that residents of Irpin community received more than UAH 2b in compensation during the first year of yeVidnovlennia.

The regional state administration reported that in Kyiv oblast, educational institutions were advised not to hold loud mass events to mark the end of the school year and graduation parties. In 66 communities of the region, the last call holiday will be held until 31 May. This academic year, 620 schools operated in Kyiv oblast. 97% of educational institutions worked in full-time and mixed formats.

Zhytomyr oblast

The youth of Baranivka community will participate in the VidNOVI:UA-2024 – regional teams have already completed their training.The programme of engaging young people in the restoration of Ukraine through youth exchanges is being implemented by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, the All-Ukrainian Youth Centre, UNDP in Ukraine in partnership with Volyn Youth Centre, with funding from the governments of Denmark and Japan.

Sumy oblast

The RMA reported that the enemy had again launched a missile attack on Sumy outskirts. The consequences of the russian attack are being clarified. Preliminary, there were no casualties.

At night and in the morning of 13 May, russians carried out 5 attacks on the territory of Bilopillia and Krasnopillia border communities. A total of 24 explosions were recorded, including artillery, mortar, MLRS and FPV drone strikes.

Yesterday the russian military attacked Sumy oblast 26 times with a total of 157 explosions from various types of weapons.Sumy, Bilopillia, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Esman, Shalyhyne, Seredyna-Buda, Znob-Novhorodske communities were shelled.

Sumy RMA informed that a local resident was killed and two others injured as a result of Krasnopillia community shelling  on 12 May. 

The SES of Sumy oblast reported that late in the evening of 12 May, the enemy again attacked the residential sector of Bilopillia. One of the shells hit a civilian house. Due to the destruction of the wall of the house, construction materials fell on an 85-year-old woman sleeping in her room at the time of the attack. Rescuers quickly arrived at the scene, freed the elderly woman from the rubble and moved her to a safer place.

Over the past week, bomb squads in the region have destroyed 123 munitions found in Sumy, Okhtyrka, Konotop, Romny and Shostka regions. According to the SES, since the beginning of the year, 420 explosive devices have been found in Sumy oblast.

Sumy RMA announced that since the beginning of 2024, the communities of Sumy oblast have received assistance from international partners in the amount of UAH 144m.

Chernihiv oblast

At around 11am, the russian military launched a massive cluster munition attack on Snovsk community. According to preliminary data, four residents were injured as a result of the russian attack. Houses, cars and civilian infrastructure were also damaged.

Over the past 24 hours, russian troops fired a total of 23 mortar and cannon artillery attacks on the border of Chernihiv oblast on 12 May. Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk communities were under enemy attack.

According to the head of the RMA, Viacheslav Chaus, the enemy fired 50 times at 20 settlements in Chernihiv oblast over the past week. A total of 308 explosions were recorded during this period. Among them, the enemy launched a ballistic missile attack and one air strike using an aircraft.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

The enemy continues terrorizing Nikopol region. There were 17 attacks during the day. From morning till evening, kamikaze drones and artillery were flying over the area. Nikopol, Chervonohryhorivka and Myrove communities were attacked. The attacks damaged an agricultural company, an apartment building, 16 private houses, 10 outbuildings, one more was destroyed, a car, 3 greenhouses, 2 gas pipelines and 3 power lines were hit. There were no casualties.

Vinnytsia oblast

Vinnytsia Mayor Serhii Morhunov reported that ​Vinnytsia oblast sent about 400 FPV drones, 3-T mavicars, jeeps and a pickup truck to the front line. Another 240 FPV drones, 4 Mavic 3Ts and 4 thermal imagers were sent to the eastern direction. 

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of RMA, reported that Kirovohrad oblast has sent a batch of drones to the soldiers of the 174th battalion holding positions towards Donetsk. 

Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyu awarded 

soldier Oleksandr Kirkish from Kropyvnytskyi region with the Golden Cross for courage and heroism towards Bakhmut.

Poltava oblast

Filip Pronin, Head of RMA, reported that the sound of an explosion was heard in Myrhorod. No hits to civilian or critical infrastructure were reported in Poltava oblast. There were no casualties.

The company that won the tender for the supply of 47 quadcopters for the military has so far delivered less than a dozen aircraft. The Department of Civil Protection of Poltava City Council extended the delivery of goods.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, the fallen commanders Sviatoslav Hoshuliak and Mykhailo Sakharov were laid to rest on the Square of Glory.

Sviatoslav Hoshuliak was a commander of a machine gun platoon. He was killed during a combat mission in Luhansk oblast as a result of FPV drone strikes and russian mortar fire. The soldier was 41 years old.

Mykhailo Sakharov was a machine gun platoon commander. His life was cut short in Luhansk oblast as a result of FPV drone strikes and russian mortar fire. He was 39 years old.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Yesterday the occupiers carried out 399 strikes on 9 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. The enemy conducted 5 airstrikes on Orikhiv and Mala Tokmachka. 178 UAVs attacked Chervonodniprovka, Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. 7MLRS attacks were launched on Mala Tokmachka and Robotyne. 209 artillery strikes were inflicted on the territory of Huliaipole, Novoandriivka, Mala Tokmachka, Robotyne, Verbove, Levadne and Malynivka. 2 reports of housing destruction were received. Civilians were unharmed. 

According to the General Staff, there were 8 clashes towards Orikhiv near Staromaiorske. One is ongoing near Robotyne. The enemy launched an aviation strike at Robotyne. 

Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration reported support provided to fighters in Zaporizhzhia and Kupiansk directions. Specifically, they transferred 150 FPV drones, over 100 UAVs and copters, including thermal ones, anti-drone rifles, EW equipment and Starlinks. 

Zaporizhzhia Regional Employment Center has employed nearly a thousand internally displaced persons since the beginning of the year. The number of applications to the employment service has increased by a quarter compared to the same period last year. This is due to changes in legislation – requests from internally displaced persons have become more frequent. It is not necessary to be unemployed to register, the services of recruiters are available to all interested parties.

A serviceman from Zaporizhzhia, Oleksandr Kovalskyi, was awarded the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine’s “Defender of Ukraine” medal. The defender was born in the village of Shevchenkove, Zaporizhzhia oblast, and joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the fall of 2022. The medal was personally presented to the warrior by the Chief Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi.

Mykolaiv oblast

Yesterday, 12 May, at 2:20pm, the enemy conducted artillery shelling on the settlement in Kutsurub community. At 5:20pm, the russian army shelled the waters of Ochakiv community from artillery. There were no casualties.

Odesa oblast

As of 7am, 13 May, there are no enemy ships in the Black and Azov Seas. There are 3 enemy ships in the Mediterranean Sea including 1 carrier of Kalibr cruise missiles with a total salvo of up to 8 missiles.

Yesterday, 12 May, a Orlan-10 reconnaissance UAV was destroyed in Odesa oblast, and a Lancet strike UAV in Kherson oblast.

Kherson oblast

Today, the occupiers shelled the village of Kizomys. As a result of one of the strikes on a residential building, a fire broke out, and two people were killed.

In the morning, the russian army attacked the village of Inzhenerne. A 74-year-old man who was outside during the enemy’s attack was hit and suffered a shrapnel leg injury.

A resident of Tiahynka was injured due to the morning shelling. She sustained explosive trauma, concussion, and contusion.

Yesterday, Sadove, Stanislav, Antonivka, Veletenske, Beryslav, Novoberyslav, Mykhailivka, Lvove, Olhyne, and the city of Kherson came under enemy attack and airstrikes. The enemy also launched a missile strike on the Vysokopillia community. Four private houses, critical infrastructure objects, and a cell tower were damaged.

Southern defense forces continue to inflict fire damage on enemy deployment areas, firing positions, and rear areas. Yesterday, the enemy lost 94 personnel and 22 units of weaponry and military equipment. A field supply buildup, 3 UAV launch sites, 3 firing positions, and 4 observation posts were destroyed.

UNICEF will help restore water supply in Vysokopillia community. The project involves repairing water mains in the village of Vysokopillia, with a total budget of UAH 28.4m. Currently, due to the destruction of Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Station, only 35% of residents are served by centralised water supply.

Nearly 2000 vulnerable individuals received assistance from the Danish Red Cross. Residents of Bilozerka and Chornobaivka communities received food and hygiene products.

The Proliska Kherson humanitarian centre provided materials for the elimination of shelling consequences to 71 residents of Kherson. In addition to materials for quick housing repairs and non-food essentials, humanitarian mission volunteers provide installation services.

Volyn oblast

Lutsk City Council reported that the community sent 40 FPV drones to the A7028 Military Unit.

Zakarpattia oblast

Delegation from the Pardubice Region of the Czech Republic visited Zakarpattia. The management of the oblast and partners discussed continuation of cooperation, the implementation of joint cross-border projects and the creation of the 4.5.0 Recovery Center.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council met with Bernd Rubelt, Potsdam’s Deputy Mayor for City Development, Construction, Economy and Ecology. They discussed rehabilitation centres for wounded soldiers.

36 family members of the killed and war missing persons of Ivano-Frankivsk community will receive payments in the amount of UAH 2,5m. Since the beginning of the year, such payments have been approved for 69 relatives of the killed and missing in the amount of UAH 5m.

Ivano-Frankivsk City Council reported that the community sent 30 FPV drones to the 79th Battalion of the 102nd Territorial Defense Brigade.

Lviv oblast

In the last week, over 190 people evacuated from the frontline areas arrived in Lviv oblast. Among them are 16 people with disabilities and 48 elderly people. Destinations fixed for Lviv oblast are Zaporizhzhia, Pokrovsk and Kherson. Volunteers of Medical and Psychological Assistance meet everyone who needs support.

The charity half-marathon of Nova Post  Don’t Stop! was held in Lviv. Over 3,000 runners from all over the country took part in the races. Thanks to the event, UAH 2m were collected for the patients of the Unbroken rehabilitation centre.

By the City Day, Lviv students raised almost UAH 2m at fairs. With these funds, 154 FPV drones were purchased as part of the Lion’s Revenge initiative. The equipment has already been sent to the military.

By the City Day, a large-scale charity event in support of soldiers was organised in Dublian. All raised funds will be donated to the military unit where fighters from Dublian serve.

A photo exhibition about women who saved children from russian shelling Mom, I’m Safe was opened in Lviv. Heroes of the photo exhibition are women with children who currently live in the Unbreakable Mothers centre.

Rivne oblast

56 children, specifically children from IDPs, families of combatants, the war missing and killed, from Rivne oblast went for rehabilitation with funds from the state budget. This is the 2nd such trip for students from Rivne oblast this year. In April, 31 children from the oblast went on vacation.

Ternopil oblast

In Ternopil oblast, the biggest field game for youth Hurby-Antonivtsi in Ukraine ended. This year, it was dedicated to fifteen participants of the game of previous years, who were killed in the russian-Ukrainian war.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

Khmelnytskyi City Council decided to hand over UAH 25m worth of property to the military. These are auto parts, quadcopters, drones. In addition, they voted for financial aid for the restoration of 13 households for almost UAH 800,000, which suffered from russian attacks.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi City Council met with a delegation from the German sister city of Dusseldorf, led by Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller. These visits establish cooperation and demonstrate readiness to further develop inter-municipal cooperation on both sides.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Sweden confirmed its participation in the upcoming Peace Summit in Switzerland.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Ulf Kristersson, Prime Minister of Sweden. They discussed filling the next package of defence support from Sweden.

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, held an online meeting with Bono, Irish rock musician, lead singer of the U2 band. They discussed the importance of involving as many countries as possible in the Global Peace Summit.

The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine and UNDP in Ukraine signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to strengthen the partnership in promoting sustainable development and economic growth in Ukraine.

Anthony Blinken, US Secretary of State, stated that the multi-month delay in approving additional funding and sending weapons to Ukraine from the US “had a price”, but the Ukrainian army is able to hold the front line. He noted that the US is doing everything possible to quickly send a $400m military aid package to Ukraine.
