It has been the 1053rd day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

On January 11, there were 121 combat clashes on the front. Ukrainian defenders are stopping the enemy, holding the lines and destroying the enemy’s plans.

The enemy launched artillery attacks on the settlements of Pokrovka in Sumy oblast; Yanzhulivka and Bleshnia in Chernihiv oblast.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy tried to advance to Ukrainian positions in the vicinity of Holubivka, Synkivka, Stepova Novoselivka and Zahryzove 13 times during the day, and nine combat clashes are currently taking place.

Towards Lyman, 16 combat clashes took place near Zelenyi Hai, Novoiehorivka, Makiivka, Terni, Zarichne, Hryhorivka and in Serebrianka forest. Two combat clashes are ongoing in this direction.

Towards Kramatorsk, in the vicinity of the settlements of Chasiv Yar and Stupochky, 13 clashes occurred, three of which are currently ongoing.

Towards Toretsk, the invaders attacked five times in the vicinity of Toretsk and Diliivka. Ukrainian defenders repelled the attacks.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy is currently highly active. Fifty-six times, clashes of varying intensity began. The enemy attacked in the vicnity of Baranivka, Yelizavetivka, Promin, Lysivka, Zelene, Novyi Trud, Zvirove, Novoandriivka, Uspenivka, Slovianka and Kostiantynopolske, 46 enemy attacks were repelled, 10 clashes are ongoing.

Towards Novopavlivka, the enemy attacked Ukrainian positions near Novosilka and Velyka Novosilka five times, and carried out an airstrike with KABs on Novopol.

Towards Kherson, one combat clash occurred. The enemy was unsuccessful.

In Kursk oblast, Ukrainian defenders repelled 12 enemy assaults, three of which are still ongoing. In addition, the enemy launched three air strikes on settlements in the region and positions of our defenders, using four GABs.

In other directions, there were no significant changes.

Ukrainian troops are exhausting the enemy along the entire line of combat clash and in the rear.


President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy reports that Ukrainian soldiers captured North Korean soldiers in Kursk oblast. According to the SBU, the prisoners do not speak Ukrainian, English or Russian, so communication with them is carried out through Korean translators in cooperation with South Korean intelligence.

Andrii Nazhos, Deputy Minister of Culture of Ukraine for European Integration, Ukraine and Poland have exchanged lists of places for searching and exhuming the remains of victims of historical conflicts. Currently, the requests are being analyzed and documents are being collected in order to make positive decisions with the consent of both sides and publicly comment on the results of such work.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Bohdan Petrenko, Head of the communications department of the 48th separate artillery brigade, informs that the russian military continues to attack Ukrainian military positions in the area of ​​Velyka Novosilka in Donetsk oblast. The situation remains steadily difficult. The enemy does not abandon attempts to attack, carry out assault operations in order to expand its control, conduct attacks in order to control the logistical routes that are in our area of ​​responsibility.

the Main Intelligence Directorate reports that Ukrainian intelligence snipers ambushed near Pokrovsk and destroyed a group of russian occupiers. The scouts worked in the rear of the occupation army and destroyed at least six russian soldiers.

The Omega special operations center reported that near Kurakhove, the National Guard shot down a russian ZALA drone using FPV drones. This is the third reconnaissance drone that Omega fighters have destroyed in the past few days.

Viktor Trehubov, Spokesman for the operational-strategic group of troops “Khortytsia”, says that Ukrainian Defense Forces are holding positions within the city of Kurakhove, Donetsk oblast, in particular in the area of ​​the thermal power plant. According to him, the Ukrainian military has positions within Kurakhove, and russians have not completely captured the city.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck a russian command post in Svitlodarsk, Donetskobladt. During this week, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a series of strikes on objects captured by the russian occupiers in Donetsk oblast.

Towards Lyman direction, russian troops attacked 39 times near the settlements of Tverdokhlibove, Hrekivka, Zelenyi Hai, Pershotravneve, Makiivka, Terny and Zarichne.

Towards Siversk, near the settlement of Bilohorivka, russians attacked Ukrainian positions twice.

Towards Kramatorsk, there were 32 attacks in the vicinity of Bila Hora, Predtechyne, Chasiv Yar, and Stupochoky.

Towards Toretsk, russian troops carried out five attacks near Toretsk and Shcherbinivka.

Towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian defenders stopped 72 assaults in the vicinity of the settlements of Novopoltavka, Tarasivka, Baranivka, Myroliubivka, Yelizavetivka, Promin, Lysivka, Myrnohrad, Novyi Trud, Zvirove, Udachne, Kotlyne, Novooleksandrivka, Novovasylivka, Novoandriivka, Novoielizavetivka, Andriivka, Kurakhove, Dachne, Petropavlivka, Yasynove, and Yantarne.

Towards Novopavlivka, the invaders attacked Ukrainian positions near Konstantinopol, Zelenivka, Rozlyv, Rozdolne, Velyka Novosilka, and Neskuchne 14 times.

Donetsk oblast

As a result of the shelling of Donetsk oblast by the russian military on January 11 (as of 16:30), one person was killed and 5 were wounded. As reported by Donetsk RMA, in the morning russians shelled the village of Hryshyne, as a result of which a 78-year-old man died there. In Pokrovsk, 2 houses were damaged during the day. In the city of Bilytske, 4 people were wounded, 2 houses, an administrative building, an infrastructure facility and a car were damaged. In Kostiantynivka, one person was wounded.

On the afternoon of January 11, russian troops struck the city of Bilytske. As a result of the shelling, a gas station and at least two residential buildings nearby were damaged. Parked cars also burned from the strike. According to Donetsk Oblast Prosecutor’s Office, the occupiers struck the city with FAB-250 aerial bombs.

In Kostiantynivka, two women, aged 50 and 67, were injured as a result of artillery shelling. They were diagnosed with shrapnel wounds and mine-explosive injuries. The victims were provided with medical assistance.

On January 10, russians killed 1 resident of Donetsk oblast – in Pokrovsk, another person was injured. Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk RMA reported on the operational situation as of the morning of January 11:

Pokrovsky region. In Bilytske, Dobropillia community, 2 high-rise buildings, 3 administrative buildings and numerous private houses were damaged. In Pokrovsk, 1 person was killed and 1 was injured, 4 houses were damaged.

Kramatorsk region. In Lyman, 6 houses were damaged. In Kostiantynivka, 10 private houses, a high-rise building and an industrial building were damaged; in Mykolaivka, 5 houses were damaged.

Bakhmut region. In Siversk, 8 houses were damaged. In Chasiv Yar community, 9 private houses, 3 high-rise buildings, 2 industrial buildings and 2 warehouses were damaged.

On January 10, russians shelled settlements in Donetsk oblast 14 times. 266 people, including 14 children, were evacuated from the front line.

The Center of National Resistance reports that in the temporarily occupied port of Mariupol, russians plan to build 25 new hydraulic structures, including berths and warehouses. The russian military aims to increase the pace and volume of Ukrainian grain exports in 2025, as well as the surviving industrial equipment that still remains in the temporarily occupied territories. 

Luhansk oblast

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk RMA, informs that the enemy significantly increased the number of attacks towards Lyman. On January 10, he stormed Ukrainian positions 39 times. In Luhansk oblast, he tried to advance near Tverdokhlibove, Hrekivka and Makiivka. He also carried out offensive actions in Belogorivka, which is in the Siversky direction, where he was stopped twice. The occupiers fired 14 times from artillery installations. 105 unmanned aerial vehicles were directed towards the Ukrainian defenders.

Latvian volunteer Edgar Platonov was killed in the battles for Ukraine. The Latvian Ministry of Defense reported that this happened on December 25, 2024 in Novoiehorivka, Luhansk oblast. He was killed at the age of 41 while performing his duties as part of the Foreign Legion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Latvian President Edgars Rinkėvičs expressed his condolences to the volunteer’s family and fellow citizens.

Luhansk Regional Military Administration reported that over a million hryvnias were sent to servicemen from the Chmyriv community. Under the program “Social Support for War Veterans and Families of Fallen Defenders” last year, 53 servicemen received 15 thousand hryvnias each. A total of UAH 240,000 was provided to 11 defenders for treatment and rehabilitation after injuries. Two families received payments due to the death of loved ones during military service. Two participants in hostilities (with disabilities as a result of the war) were provided with compensation for sanatorium and resort treatment.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, russians are not paying pensions to more than 70 thousand pensioners. The occupiers justify themselves with a “technical failure”, due to which tens of thousands of personal files of pensioners were allegedly lost.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that the enemy attacked Kyiv oblast with a UAV at night. Air defence forces were deployed – no hits to critical or residential infrastructure were made. The falling debris in one of the districts damaged 2 private houses and 2 outbuildings. All people whose homes were damaged will be provided with the necessary assistance.

Next week in Kyiv, senior UN officials will present plans for humanitarian assistance to Ukraine for 2025 with donor funds worth more than $3 billion. According to Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Serhii Kyslytsya, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher and High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi will visit Ukraine for this purpose.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that another batch of much-needed aid from the Kyiv community has been sent to the frontline. Another 500 fpv drones and 50 Mavic 3Ts will be delivered to the soldiers of the 4th Brigade of the National Guard ‘Rubizh’. Last year, the capital allocated UAH 435 million from the Kyiv budget to the 4th Brigade. These are funds for equipment and urgent needs that the city transfers to military units upon request.

Mykola Kalashnyk, Acting Head of Kyiv Regional Military Administration, informed that Kyiv Oblast continues to work on improving the energy resilience of communities. With the assistance of USAID, the issue of supplying 9 cogeneration units with a capacity of 6.2 MW to Kyiv Oblast has been resolved. In cooperation with the German GIZ, 8 compact gas-fired CCGTs with a capacity of 0.56 MW were installed to provide energy to social facilities. A 1 MW unit was received from the Finnish Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Mayor Oleksandr Markushyn announced that the Veterans Department of the Centre for Initiatives ‘Come Back Alive’ has launched a series of training sessions for the military undergoing rehabilitation at the Irpin Hospital in Kyiv oblast. According to him, the training sessions are conducted by active military personnel who have been seriously injured and found a way to recover through sports. 

Zhytomyr oblast

Representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received two pick-up trucks, starliners, generators, 96 steel stoves for heating the defenders and 9 drones for reconnaissance and destruction of the enemy. On 10 January, the aid was handed over to the Armed Forces of Ukraine by Vitaliy Bunechko, head of the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration, together with Volodymyr Havrysh, president of the Charitable Foundation Modern Ukraine, and Viktor Khomenko, director of the Papir-Mal cardboard and paper factory.

In Zhytomyr, the first building of a residential complex for 116 families of internally displaced persons was completed. According to the project, the basement of one of the buildings will be used as a shelter built in accordance with all modern standards.The full completion of the complex is expected in 2025, after which more than 400 internally displaced persons in Zhytomyr will receive high-quality and modern housing.

The regional police reported that psychologists held a therapeutic meeting for wounded soldiers in Zhytomyr oblast. The defenders had the opportunity to interact with psychological support dogs in a relaxed atmosphere, which helped relieve stress and improve their emotional state. The event was held as part of the Psychological Practice Unit project.

Sumy oblast

The RMA reported that on 11 January, in the sky over Sumy Oblast, anti-aircraft fighters shot down 5 enemy UAVs of the Shakhed type.  Since the beginning of the year, air defense units of the region have destroyed 89 russian drones.

 The night in Sumy Oblast passed without shelling.

On 10 January, russians carried out 10 shelling attacks on the border territories and settlements of Sumy oblast.  According to the RMA, there were 17 explosions.  The enemy struck with mortars (11 explosions) and artillery (2 explosions), dropped antiaircraft missiles (4 explosions).  The communities of Myropilia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velika Pysarivka came under fire.

Sumy RMA informed that the construction of the first underground school in the oblast was completed in  Okhtyrka region.  The works were finished at the end of last year.  The anti-radiation shelter is a dual-purpose structure and can be used both for the organization of a smooth and safe educational process, and for the protection of community residents in case of need.

 In Sumy, an entry in the queue to receive financial aid from the UNHCR has been opened.  According to the NGO “IDPs of Ukraine”, the amount of assistance is UAH 3,600 for each household member for three months.  Internally displaced persons within the last 6 months from the moment of displacement due to hostilities and people who returned after forced displacement to another region or country from 24 February, 2022 can apply.  

Chernihiv oblast

The Department of Civil Protection and Defense Work of the Chernihiv Oblast reported that a residential building was damaged in the village of Pryluky region due to the hit of a “Shaheed” drone. There was no information about casualties among the local population and damage to other civil infrastructure.

Chernihiv oblast border detachment of the State Emergency Service informed that over the past day, on 10 January, the russian army attacked Semenivka border community.  One drop of an explosive device from an unmanned aerial vehicle over Leonivka, as well as one strike by an FPV-drone and four mortar strikes against Tymonovychi were recorded.

The Regional Emergency Service reported that in Chernihiv Oblast on 9 January, sappers destroyed 21 explosive objects, namely 50mm mortar mines from the Second World War.  The ammunition was discovered by a local resident near the  Horoshkivka of Horodnia Territorial Community.

 Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv RMA, said that after massive shelling, the residents of Semenivka began to leave the community.  Almost 130 evacuees have already been resettled in modular towns of Kyseliv community. In the modules live people who voluntarily left Semenivka community, but are unable to rent housing.  Also, people will be settled in the third module, which until now was a reserve.

 Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, met with representatives of the Latvian charitable organization TAVI DRAUGI.  During the visit, representatives of the charitable organization delivered Christmas gifts, which were collected by Latvian families for the children of Chernihiv.  Latvians also bought the necessary equipment for Semenivka community to help with the construction of a social laundry.  In the next year, the benefactors plan to renovate  Novyi Bykiv school and Chernihiv regional primary care center.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, said that from evening until morning, the enemy continued to attack Nikopol region. The occupiers shelled the area with artillery and Grad rockets, and launched a kamikaze drone. In Nikopol, a 40-year-old man was injured in an enemy shelling. They targeted the region centre, Myrove, Pokrovsk and Marhanets communities. An enterprise, infrastructure, a private house, a truck and a power line were damaged. It was also noisy in Samara district. There was a fire, an outbuilding, 3 private houses and a car were damaged. Medics treated a 10-year-old boy and women aged 30 and 88.

Today, the enemy attacked Nikopol and Sinelnykove regions. A dozen kamikaze drones were launched in Nikopol region. They targeted the region centre, Pokrovske, Chervonohryhorivka and Marhanets communities. A petrol station was damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Military Administration, reported that the Air Armed forces were on alert in Kirovohrad oblast at night. In Oleksandrivska community, windows and roofs in several private houses were damaged. A power line pole was also damaged.

Poltava oblast

In Poltava, a reminder campaign “Do not be silent. Captivity kills”. People came out with posters, flags and photographs of their relatives in captivity.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, reported that nine russian UAVs were shot down in Cherkasy oblast. In one case, shrapnel damaged window glazing in four houses. In two communities, damage was also recorded to the windows of a total of five residential buildings and several unused buildings.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that a 47-year-old woman was killed in a russian attack on a civilian vehicle in Prymorske, Zaporizhzhia oblast. 

4 more people were injured. The occupiers attacked Prymorske all night, and in the morning they hit a civilian car with 5 people in it. A 47-year-old woman died on the spot from her injuries.

According to the South Operational Command, in Orikhiv and Huliaipole regions, russian forces are conducting engineering reconnaissance of Ukrainian Defence Forces’ positions. No formation of a russian strike group has been observed.

The Drone Systems Forces reported that during the past week, UAV operators destroyed a russian Tor-M2 surface-to-air missile system, tanks, artillery, armored vehicles and a crossing in Zaporizhzhia oblast.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA stated that on 10 January, russian forces launched 377 strikes on 15 towns and villages in Zaporizhzhia oblast, including 201 drone attacks targeting Zaporizhzhia, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Bilohiria and Novodarivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, informed that in the night of 11 January, air defence forces shot down 3 Shahed drones in Mykolaiv oblast. Falling debris caused a grass fire in Voznesensk region.

On 10 January, russian forces launched 7 strikes with FPV drones on Kutsurub community, damaging one residential house in each of the villages of Dmytrivka, Dniprovske and Solonchaky.

In the evening of 10 January, russian forces attacked Sukhoielanets community by an unidentified drone. There were no injuries reported.

Odesa oblast

According to the Ukrainian Navy, as of 6pm, one enemy ship is in the Black Sea carrying Kalibr cruise missiles, with a potential salvo of up to 4 missiles. There are no enemy ships in the Sea of Azov, while in the Mediterranean Sea, 7 russian ships are present, including 2 carrying Kalibr missiles with a total salvo of up to 22 missiles.

Kherson oblast

Referring to the RMA, russian forces attacked a 44-year-old resident of Zmiivka, Kherson oblast, by a drone while he was in his yard. He was hospitalised in serious condition.

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, informed that in Antonivka near Kherson, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone, injuring a 33-year-old man with blast trauma and shrapnel wounds to his legs.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, said that during an overnight drone attack, air defence units shot down 2 Shahed-131/136 UAVs over Kherson oblast.

On 9 January, a 54-year-old man was killed in Beryslav when russian forces dropped explosives from a drone.

On 10 January, russian forces shelled 38 settlements in Kherson oblast, targeting critical and social infrastructure. They damaged 21 private houses, a gas pipeline and a car. 2 people were injured.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The RMA held a meeting with representatives of charitable foundations and organizations, as well as volunteers. The purpose of the event is to improve the coordination of actions in providing assistance to the population, optimize the use of resources and ensure prompt response to urgent needs.

The 137th Separate Battalion of Marines received a portable electronic warfare device of the HYMO M model complete with a remote control panel, brackets for installing antennas on the vehicle from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 15 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old, 100 bags with grocery sets and 80 loaves of bread. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (950 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V., by the Hungarian Ecumenical Aid Service, Valentin Stefano and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Kolomyia Central Regional Hospital received a modern magnetic resonance imaging device worth UAH 82m thanks to the Japan International Cooperation Agency and the Government of Ukraine.

Lviv oblast

An international conference on minimally invasive surgery and endoscopy Lviv Live Endoscopy is taking place these days in Lviv. The event brought together over 600 medical specialists from many parts of the world.

During the 5 weeks of operation, the Christmas mail raised UAH 372,000 for the Zbroyenosci collection. The bank was replenished with donations from the Christmas mail – the sale of postcards and the holding of master classes (UAH 321,000) and funds raised from the Great Christmas excursion (UAH 51,000).

Rivne oblast

In the Centers of Sustainability project 4 new communities of Rivne oblast, namely, Hoshchansk, Kornynsk, Varask and Stepansk communities. Centers of Sustainability will become an important link in the system of mental health support, assistance to families in difficult life circumstances, and will also contribute to the adaptation of IDPs. The Integration Center NGO will be the provider of services in these communities.

9 powerful cogeneration plants were installed in Rivne oblast thanks to the USAID project on energy security.

Ternopil oblast

Volodymyr Ivanyk, soldier of the 63rd Brigade in the Unit of the Reactive Artillery Battery, from the city of Pidhaitsi was awarded the Golden Cross by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Volodymyr Ivanyk took part in fierce battles in Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Kherson and other oblasts.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

In Khmelnytskyi oblast, the 1st Veterans Development Center was opened at Kamianets-Podilskyi State Institute of Higher Education Training and Rehabilitation Institution. The center was created on the basis of the Memorandum between the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine and the educational institution.

Chernivtsi oblast

The RMA reported that Chernivtsi oblast is the 1st in Ukraine in terms of the number of women among candidates who applied to recruiting centers – 48% of all applicants in the oblast. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The government of Great Britain, following the US, announced the introduction of sanctions against the russian surgutnaftoa and hazprom Nafta. Companies help to finance the war of the russian federation against Ukraine. Together, they produce over a million barrels of oil per day, worth approximately $23bn per year.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Joe Biden, US President. Support for Ukraine was discussed.

Edar Platonov, Latvian volunteer, was killed in the war against the russians on 25 December, 2024 in Novoyehorivka region, Luhansk oblast. He fought against the russian occupiers as part of the International Legion of the Armed Forces. Platonov was
