On 9 May, the number of attacks by the aggressor reached 51.
The enemy is shelling border areas. In Sumy oblast, the vicinities of the settlements of Rohizne, Volfyne, Korenok, Atynske, Ulanove, and Kucherivka were affected.
Towards Northern Sloboda and Kursk, the enemy carried out 10 strikes on settlements and the positions of Ukrainian troops. Two assault actions by the enemy were recorded.
Towards Southern Sloboda, the enemy tried to improve its position seven times in the vicinity of Prylipka, Izbytske, Starytsia, Ternova, Petro-Ivanivka, and Synelnykove. Two of these attempts are still ongoing.
Towards Kupiansk, the enemy conducted no active offensive actions.
Towards Lyman, the enemy attacked four times in the vicinity of Lyman, Zarichne, Yampil, and Ozerne.
Towards Sloviansk, the enemy conducted no active offensive actions.
Towards Kramatorsk, the enemy attacked once near Tykhonivka.
Towards Kostiantynivka, the invaders carried out seven attacks in the vicinity of the settlements of Kostiantynivka, Pleshchiivka, Illinivka, and Rusyn Yar.
Towards Pokrovsk, the occupiers tried 17 times to dislodge Ukrainian soldiers from their positions in the vicinity of the settlements of Bilytske, Nykanorivka, Dorozhnie, Rodynske, Novooleksandrivka, Udachne, Vasylivka, Molodetske, and Novomykolaivka. Two of these attacks are still ongoing.
Towards Oleksandrivka, the enemy conducted no assault actions.
Towards Huliaipole, there were 13 attacks against the positions of Ukrainian defenders near Nove Zaporizhzhia, Rybne, Tvitkove, Zaliznychne, Vozdvyzhivka, Sviatopetrivka, Huliaipilske, and Charivne.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine
Kharkiv oblast
Front line
The General Staff of the AFU reported that two combat engagements were ongoing towards Southern Sloboda. russian troops stormed seven times in the vicinity of Prylipka, Izbytske, Starytsia, Ternova, Petro-Ivanivka, and Synelnykove. Towards Kupiansk, the occupiers conducted no active offensive actions.
According to Yevhen Artelemeichuk, senior officer of the communications department of the 10th Army Corps, throughout 9 May, russian troops did not storm the positions of Ukrainian military in the sector from Kupiansk to Borova, but continued drone attacks. At the same time, Ukrainian military are recording a buildup of russians in certain sections of the front, likely for further assault actions after the “truce” declared by russia ends.
The General Staff of the AFU reports that there were 245 combat engagements at the front. Towards Southern Sloboda, russian troops attacked the positions of the Defense Forces 15 times in the vicinity of Prylipka, Vovchansk, Lyman, and Starytsia, and towards Izbytske, Chaikivka, and Ternova. Towards Kupiansk, the russian army carried out one attack towards Radkivka.
The Khartia 2nd Brigade of the NSU reports that fighters of the 23rd R.U.H. Assault Regiment cleared the front line of the russian army’s defense in the vicinity of Starytsia in the Vovchansk direction. Ukrainian military and volunteers from Latin American countries participated in the assault operation.
Nadiia Zamryha, Spokesperson for the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade, reported that on 6 May, military of the 14th SMB destroyed a column consisting of an armored personnel carrier and 12 quad bikes with which russian troops tried to storm towards Kupiansk. According to her, part of the russian infantry managed to dismount and tried to consolidate, but was destroyed by Ukrainian pilots. On the left bank of the Oskil, the occupiers mostly storm in small infantry groups, while mechanized attacks are recorded less frequently.
Shelling
Viktor Kovalenko, Head of Zolochiv CMA, reported that during the day on 9 May, russian troops attacked Odnorobivka of the Zolochiv community with Molniia-type drones. As a result of the strike, a one-story residential building was significantly damaged; no people were injured.
According to Kharkiv RMA, 17 settlements in Kharkiv oblast were subjected to enemy strikes over the past day. As a result of shelling in Riasne, Zolochiv community, a 59-year-old man was injured. Medics also provided assistance to a 75-year-old man who was injured in Ivanivka of the Chuhuiv region on 4 May.
Over the day, the russian army deployed two Geran-2 type UAVs, three Lancet type UAVs, seven Molniia type UAVs, four FPV drones, and 16 drones of an unidentified type across Kharkiv oblast.
In Bohodukhiv, Kupiansk, Izium, Kharkiv, Lozova, and Chuhuiv regions, private houses, power grids, cars, a market, a restaurant, a canteen, railway infrastructure, an elevator, and a civilian enterprise were damaged.
Anna Hontar, Spokesperson for Kharkiv RMA, reported that in Shestakove of the Chuhuiv region, two cows were killed as a result of a russian drone hit, and there are also injured animals. Preliminarily, the roof of a cowshed was damaged.
Kharkiv RMA reports that the transit evacuation point in Lozova received 227 people over the day. Since the point began operating, 33,009 people have been registered there.
Other
Architecture students from more than 15 countries will develop reconstruction options for the 200-year-old Pavlov estate in Kharkiv, which was damaged by a russian strike in 2022. This is one of the few surviving historical buildings in the city designed in the Classicist style.
Donetsk oblast
Front line
According to the 81st Separate Airmobile Brigade, russian units have increased pressure towards Sloviansk, using ground-based robotic platforms for supplies and hexacopters for remote mining. Ukrainian paratroopers continue to hold the defense.
The General Staff of the AFU reports that over the past day, the Defense Forces repelled 21 assaults near Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, Pleshchiivka, Illinivka, Rusyn Yar, Novopavlivka, Toretske, and Sofiivka towards Kostiantynivka.
Towards Pokrovsk, Ukrainian military stopped 37 assaults, the General Staff of the AFU reported. Despite russia’s claims of a “truce,” fighting in this direction did not stop on 9 May: artillery was active, FPV drones were widely used, and russian troops stormed in small infantry groups, according to Taras Myshak, senior officer of the communications department of the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade.
The 7th Air Assault Corps reports that the russian army is gathering forces near Pokrovsk, where units of the 90th Tank Division have already been identified. The occupiers are using the city as a base to accumulate equipment and personnel before further attacks.
In Myrnohrad, russian troops are deploying command posts and preparing a breakthrough towards Rodynske. The primary goal of the russian army remains the capture of Hryshyne, where fighting continues within the village itself and on its outskirts. According to the 7th Air Assault Corps, the Ukrainian military recently eliminated two russian stormtroopers during close-quarters small arms combat.
Since the beginning of May, Air Assault Forces units have killed and wounded 329 occupiers and hit more than 40 pieces of equipment, the 7th Air Assault Corps reported.
Shelling
Vadym Batii, Chairman of the Board of JSC Donetskoblgaz, reported that on 9 May, a russian drone attacked a Donetskoblgaz vehicle in Druzhkivka. Two employees—a mechanic and a driver—were in the car during the strike.
For 8 May, there were 901 strikes of the russian army on the front line and the residential sector of Donetsk region, according to Donetsk region police. Seven settlements were under fire: Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Sloviansk, Malotaranivka, Pryvillia, and Sydorove.
- In Malotaranivka, russian troops struck with two FPV drones, wounding a civilian.
- Sloviansk, Druzhkivka, and Kramatorsk were subjected to drone attacks. An apartment building and two trucks were damaged.
- The russian army struck Pryvillia with a V2U drone, destroying a private house.
- In Mykolaivka, premises were damaged as a result of shelling.
Other
In Kremenchuk, a 78-year-old displaced person from Donetsk region was gifted a three-wheeled electric bicycle. The man lost his transportation during evacuation after shelling and will now be able to move independently again.
The Association of Families of Azovstal Defenders reacted to the announced “1000 for 1000” exchange. According to the association, more than 1,500 Azovstal defenders remain in captivity, including over 700 Azov members. Families hope the exchange will include the most difficult groups of prisoners of war, specifically the seriously ill, severely wounded, and illegally convicted.
About five hundred people remain in Sviatohirsk, Donetsk region. According to the map of the DeepState analytical project, the front line passes approximately 10 kilometers from the city.
Luhansk oblast
Front line
According to the National Guard of Ukraine, units of the Lasar’s Group struck a concentration of russian equipment in the rear in Luhansk oblast. As a result of the operation, a 9T452 transloader vehicle from the BM-27 Uragan complex and two units of automotive equipment were destroyed.
Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk RMA, reported that on the Lyman and Sloviansk sections of the front, russian troops tried to advance 10 times in the vicinity of seven settlements over the past day. In Luhansk oblast, the occupiers directed seven UAVs and FPV drones at Ukrainian positions.
Occupation
Oleksii Kharchenko, Head of Luhansk RMA, reported that in temporarily occupied Sievierodonetsk, the russians do not plan any new residential construction beyond the demolition of at least 70 damaged high-rise buildings. The occupation authorities explain this by the shutdown of large industrial enterprises—which the russians themselves destroyed during the storming of the city—and the lack of solvent buyers for new housing.
In the so-called “LPR,” the personnel shortage extends even to the cultural sphere: a leader for a theater group in Mylove was found 4,000 kilometers away from Luhansk oblast—in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug of the russian federation. No candidates were found locally, including among graduates of institutions in the occupied territory.
Other
Communities from Luhansk oblast presented the region’s cultural heritage during the celebration of the 364th anniversary of Ivano-Frankivsk. At the “City Unites Communities” event, visitors could see traditional embroidery, pastries, and master classes, and talk with craftswomen. For displaced communities, this has become a way to preserve and pass on their culture even outside their home region.
What is happening now in the north of Ukraine
Kyiv oblast
Kyiv City State Administration reported on the morning of May 9 that 13 air raid alerts were issued in the capital throughout this week, totaling over 11 hours.
Students and faculty of the State Tax University in Irpin have joined voluntary formations of the territorial community. Previously, the educational institution signed a tripartite memorandum of cooperation with the voluntary formations of Bucha and Irpin communities. Starting May 9, 20 students and teachers will officially become volunteers protecting the skies over these communities.
The “Kapitoshka” kindergarten in Bucha received a diesel generator and a modern backup power system from international partners to ensure autonomous operation during power outages. The equipment was provided by the Maltese Relief Service as part of the Sovereign Order of Malta’s “Warmth for Ukraine” program.
A study titled “Documenting the Russian-Ukrainian War in 2014–2025” was presented in Kyiv. In its research, the Center for Human Rights and War Memorialization analyzed 90 organizations and initiatives, as well as 114 projects and works documenting the war. According to Detector Media, the study is available in both electronic and print formats.
Zhytomyr oblast
In Zhytomyr oblast, efforts continue to extinguish a massive forest fire covering 500 hectares. On May 8, the State Emergency Service reported that firefighting is complicated by the fact that some burning areas are mined. The fire, which broke out in the Polissia Nature Reserve, has been localized. Volunteers are working alongside rescuers and forestry workers, providing a mobile aid station and meals for personnel.
Zhytomyr RMA reported that a mental recovery event for veterans was recently held in Zhytomyr. Residents of Zhytomyr Geriatric Boarding House created a special atmosphere by performing musical and dance numbers for the defenders. The event took place at the Veteran Center as part of the “How Are You?” national mental health program.
Sumy oblast
Sumy City Military Administration reported that in Vakalivshchyna village, Bytytsia starostat district of Sumy community, a russian drone hit a private household. As a result of the attack, a residential building and outbuildings were destroyed. There were no casualties. Work is ongoing to eliminate the consequences of the strike.

The State Emergency Service informed that a russian strike on Berezivka community overnight on 9 May caused a large-scale fire on the grounds of a private household. Due to the threat of repeated strikes, specialists suspended work and moved to a safe location.
According to the Regional Military Administration, as a result of enemy strikes on Sumy oblast over the past day, as of the morning of 9 May, one person was injured — a 66-year-old woman in Seredyna-Buda community.
Over the day, from the morning of 8 May to the morning of 9 May, russian troops carried out more than 20 attacks on seven settlements in six territorial communities of Sumy oblast. The highest number of attacks was recorded in Shostka region. The enemy used mortars, FPV drones and UAVs. Over the day, air raid alerts in Sumy oblast lasted seven hours and one minute.
Civilian infrastructure facilities were damaged and destroyed:
- In Velyka Pysarivka community, a private residential house, an outbuilding and a non-residential premises were damaged;
- In Putyvl community, a lorry was damaged;
- In Berezivka community, a private residential house and outbuildings were destroyed;
- In Seredyna-Buda community, a private residential house was destroyed, and a private residential house and a civilian infrastructure facility were damaged;
- In Shostka community, a private household was damaged as a result of earlier attacks;
- In Esman community, private residential houses, outbuildings, a civilian infrastructure facility and non-residential premises were destroyed as a result of earlier attacks.
Over the day, local authorities, together with units of State Emergency Service, National Police and civil society organisations, evacuated four people from border communities.
Sumy oblast police reported that White Angels crew evacuated two families from Velyka Pysarivka community. The evacuees were two couples aged 72 and 66, and 66 and 63. They had remained at home despite constant shelling: one house was completely destroyed, another was seriously damaged, and a crater from an aerial bomb was near the home, the statement said. More than a dozen ducklings were also evacuated with the people, as their owners could not leave them unattended.
The Regional Military Administration reported that in March, 635 employees involved in emergency repair work received state additional payments of UAH 20,000 each. Another 43 employees received payments under supplementary lists. Work to restore critical infrastructure after enemy attacks continues uninterrupted in Sumy oblast. Power engineers, gas workers, water utility employees, heating sector workers and municipal service staff restore electricity, water, gas and heat for people every day.
Chernihiv oblast
A forest fire in the border area of Chernihiv oblast has already spread across more than 4,000 hectares. Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, said that russian strikes caused the fire. According to him, the enemy has increasingly been using FPV drones carrying an incendiary mixture. He said it is impossible to fully extinguish the fire due to the presence of enemy drones.
Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, reported that russian forces attacked a residential area of Semenivka by an FPV drone on the night of 9 May. Around midnight, the drone hit the yard of a private house. An outbuilding and a car sustained significant damage.
The State Emergency Service reported that a father and son were killed in Chernihiv oblast as a result of a russian drone attack. The enemy struck an agricultural enterprise in a border village of Novhorod-Siverskyi region on the evening of 8 May. Men aged 70 and 49 were killed, and another man, aged 55, was injured.

Oleksandr Seliverstov, Head of Novhorod-Siverskyi Regional Military Administration, informed that russian troops attacked Semenivka by a Molniia-type strike UAV at 9:39pm on 8 May. Civilian infrastructure in the city was targeted. According to the Regional Military Administration, a boiler house and a car were damaged in Semenivka as a result of enemy drone strikes.
According to Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, Heran-type drones struck an agricultural enterprise in a village of Koriukivka region on 8 May. A fire broke out at the impact site, and firefighters worked there.
Chernihiv Border Detachment reported that on 8 May, russian troops attacked three border communities in Chernihiv oblast over the course of the day: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka and Snovsk. The enemy carried out strikes using tube artillery (10 explosions), Molniia-type UAVs (2 explosions), FPV drones (16 explosions), and dropped an explosive device from a UAV (1 explosion). Eight settlements came under enemy fire.
Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine
Dnipropetrovsk oblast
Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that a man was killed in Marhanets.
Two more people, a woman and a man, were injured. A retail kiosk caught fire. The enemy attacked the regional centre, Marhanetsk and Chervonohryhorivka communities by drones and artillery. Fires broke out. Two private houses, a shop, a cafe, an outbuilding and a gas pipeline were damaged.
A man was killed as a result of a UAV attack in Dubovykivka community. A tractor caught fire. An agricultural enterprise was damaged.
In Mezhova community, a 46-year-old woman was killed as a result of an FPV strike. In Myrove community, an 87-year-old woman was injured.
The occupiers struck the regional centre, Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities by drones. A multi-storey building and a lyceum were damaged.
Kirovohrad oblast
In Kropyvnytskyi, a European Union flag was raised on the flagpole outside the City Council, alongside Ukraine’s blue-and-yellow flag and red-and-black flag of Ukrainian resistance.
Poltava oblast
Serviceman Yurii Chernihin was killed while defending Ukraine. The soldier was from Velyka Bahachka community, where a farewell ceremony will be held for him in the coming days. The defender was born on 16 July 1981. He lived in Krotivshchyna village in Velyka Bahachka community. He held the rank of Captain during his military service.
Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine
Zaporizhzhia oblast
According to the regional National Police, a russian army FPV drone struck an evacuation vehicle in Orikhiv on 8 May.
According to the General Staff, the Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 23 russian army attacks towards Huliaipole and Orikhiv over the past day, 8 May. In particular, combat engagements took place in the vicinity of Dobropillia, Zlahoda, Zaliznychne, Bahate, Olenokostiantynivka, Shcherbaky, and towards Nove Zaporizhzhia, Vozdvyzhivka, Staroukrainka, and Charivne.
Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reports that a 67-year-old man was killed and two more people were injured as a result of an FPV drone attack on a car in Polohy region.
Two people were injured as a result of attacks on Zaporizhzhia region. Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reports that russian military carried out more than 730 strikes on 31 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast over the past day, 8 May. The occupiers attacked with drones and artillery.
Mykolaiv oblast
Ivan Kukhta, Head of Snihurivka CMA, reports that a reconnaissance drone was detected in the vicinity of Snihurivka during the day.
According to Mykolaiv RMA, there were no russian attacks in Mykolaiv oblast during 8 May.
Kherson oblast
Kherson RMA reports that a woman who was injured due to russian shelling on 15 April was delivered to a hospital from Beryslav. The 60-year-old local resident was diagnosed with a blast injury and fractured arm bones.
According to Kherson RMA, two elderly residents of Beryslav who were injured during russian shelling on 1 April were delivered to a hospital. A 79-year-old man and a 72-year-old woman were hospitalized with blast injuries and concussions.
Kherson RMA reports that at around 09:00, russians attacked a woman in Komyshany with a drone. Due to the enemy strike, the 56-year-old local resident sustained a concussion, blast injury, and an acute stress reaction.
Kherson RMA reports that a child who tripped a russian “petal” anti-personnel mine yesterday was evacuated from Beryslav. The 17-year-old girl sustained a blast injury, concussion, and traumatic amputation of a foot.
Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine
Volyn oblast
The death of Oleksandr Chernetsky, serviceman from the village of Stara Lishnya, Poromiv community, has been confirmed. The Senior Soldier was considered missing for over 2 years after a combat mission in Donetsk oblast, but results of a DNA examination officially confirmed the defender’s death.
Zakarpattia oblast
During the regular session of Uzhhorod City Council, deputies supported the decision on additional funding for the Security and Defense Forces of Ukraine. Another UAH 15.85m will be allocated from the community budget for the needs of the military. These funds will be used to strengthen the capabilities of the units, in particular, to purchase the necessary equipment and means that will help to more effectively perform combat missions and ensure the protection of critical infrastructure.
Ivano-Frankivsk oblast
As part of the Caring for the Hero’s Family regional project, a cognitive excursion to the Carpathian region was organized for the families of the fallen and missing defenders from Solotvyn territorial community. This time, the journey took place through the picturesque Carpathians to Yaremche and Vorokhta.
Lviv oblast
Residents of Rudkivska community managed to make another trip to the 55th Separate Artillery Brigade Zaporizhzhia Sich and deliver an FPV drone, a drone detector, power banks, hygiene products, homemade pastries and various dishes, food, camouflage nets and kikimoras, gas cylinders, socks and a generator.
Rivne oblast
Veterans of Rivne oblast and their family members have the opportunity to take advantage of an expanded list of dental services. These include dental implantation, bone augmentation surgeries and implant prosthetics.
Ternopil oblast
Servicemen of Ternopil community will receive funds in the amount of UAH 15,000 for treatment and rehabilitation. In 2026, 264 servicemen have already received such assistance.
Khmelnytskyi oblast
Khmelnytskyi community has allocated financial assistance for 96 servicemen for treatment and rehabilitation. The total amount of assistance is over UAH 1.3m.
Chernivtsi oblast
Veterans’ hearings held in Kelmentsi. 6 families of the fallen and 2 families of the missing were awarded state awards posthumously.
International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)
Finland will allocate $300m to strengthen Ukrainian air defense. Canada will allocate an additional $200m to Ukraine under the PURL program.
Ukraine is working with India and Bahrain on the parameters of security cooperation. Parties are currently working on areas of security cooperation. At the same time, Ukraine is preparing to strengthen cooperation with the countries of the region based on the experience of expert teams in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
