Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

The General Staff as of 4pm reported that towards Kharkiv, the Ukrainian Armed Forces repelled one attack by enemy troops near Starytsia. Tymofiivka was under shelling.

Five times today, the occupiers tried to advance towards Ukrainian positions near Zapadne, Kucherivka, Petropavlivka and Zahryzove towards Kupiansk.

Nine battles are ongoing towards Lyman. In total, russians attacked there 12 times today, in particular, near Zelenyi Hai, Borivska Andriivka, Kopanky and Ivanivka.

Yesterday, towards Kharkiv, the enemy stormed Ukrainian positions four times near Vovchansk.

Towards Kupiansk, there were 12 attacks yesterday. Defence forces repelled the assault near Holubivka, Zahryzove and Petropavlivka.

Attacks

According to the police, at around 3:40pm, a russian drone crashed on the territory of Zhuravlivka Hydropark.

Around 3:30pm, a strike by a Molniia UAV was recorded in the Nemyshlianskyi district of Kharkiv.

Two private houses and a car were damaged.

Around 3pm, a hit by a Molniya UAV was recorded in the Nemyshlianskyi district of Kharkiv. According to the RMA, there was a fire at the site of the attack. The victim, a 65-year-old man, works as a security guard at the enterprise damaged by the strike.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of the Village Military Administratiom, reported that at around 11am, Ivashky of Zolochiv community were attacked by FPV drones. As a result of the hit, a barn was destroyed, a private house, a summer kitchen, power lines and a car were damaged.

A 30-year-old man was hospitalised as a result of the shelling of the Vovchansk community this morning, the regional police reported. The village of Losivka was attacked by russians around 9:45am.

Yesterday at 10:07pm, Nove Pekelne village was under russian attack. As a result of the fall of the wreckage of the downed UAV, a car burned, a private house and two outbuildings were damaged. Two women of 42 and 67 years old were injured, they were not hospitalised.

Other

As a result of increased evacuation measures, 8 people were evacuated from Kupiansk and Borova directions.

Currently, almost 6,700 people are to be evacuated from Kupiansk, including 2,100 residents of Kupiansk community. The priority is the left bank, where 133 people remain.

More than 1,550 residents of 29 settlements in Borova community are also subject to evacuation.

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The SBU said that three guards of a penal colony in Horlivka have been notified of suspicion of ill-treatment of prisoners of war. In the prisons, they organised so-called “receptions”, when Ukrainian prisoners were beaten to death with special PR-73 batons during the first day of their detention. Another type of torture used by the perpetrators was imitation of “shooting” with firearms, when the victims were placed against a wall and shot at next to them. According to the SBU military counterintelligence, in this way, the russian occupiers tried to psychologically break the victims and “knock out” their consent to cooperate with russia.

The General Staff said that the number of attacks towards Kurakhove has increased. The defence forces repelled 38 russian attacks. Also russian troops were most actively trying to advance near Dachne, Kurakhove, Shevchenko, Petropavlivka, Slovianka and Yasenove.

The Khortytsia military command reported that towards Lyman, russian troops stormed Ukrainian positions near Nadiia, Kopanky, Novoiehorivka, Makiivka and Terny, while towards Siversk, fortifications in Bilohorivka were attacked.

Attacks

The police recorded 3,244 enemy attacks on the frontline and residential areas. Russian troops shelled 5 settlements: Kostiantynivka, Lyman, Pokrovsk, Toretsk and Hryshyne.

28 civilian objects were destroyed, including 21 residential buildings.

The russians shelled Lyman with Smerch multiple rocket launchers and artillery, damaging 9 apartment buildings and 8 private houses, an administrative building, 2 outbuildings, a gas pipeline and a power line.

A railway line was damaged as a result of the attack on Kostiantynivka.

In Pokrovsk, the enemy hit a residential sector with a drone, damaging three private houses and a civilian car.

In Hryshyne, a private house was damaged by an artillery shell.

Luhansk oblast

The RMA reported that the enemy fired 14 times at the frontline territory, settlements and fortifications of Ukrainian defenders yesterday. They used 101 unmanned aerial vehicles.

The invaders tried to conduct assault operations near Nadiia, Novoiehorivka and Bilohorivka. In particular, two russian offensive attempts were repelled near Bilohorivka.

Russian soldiers are committing suicide in the occupied parts of Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. In November, such cases began to occur almost daily, and in December – two for every three days.

In Siverskodonetsk, russian construction workers are moving into the apartments of residents. This is happening both in abandoned houses and in those that have already been re-registered under russian law, but the owners are forced to live at a different address.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

On 8 January, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Kyiv with the current OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Elina Valtonen. The parties discussed the protection of Ukrainian children, support for the military, and strengthening sanctions against russia’s shadow fleet.

The Ministry of Defence reported that an American delegation led by Winfield Swanton, Director for Ukraine at the US National Security Council, arrived in Kyiv on 8 January ahead of the meeting of the Contact Group on Assistance to Ukraine to be held in Germany. The main topics of the meeting included discussing the results of US assistance to Ukraine in 2024 and planning for cooperation between the defence ministries’ teams in 2025.

The Media initiative for Human Rights (MIPR) reported that in Ukraine, DNA expertise identified the bodies of three more Ukrainians killed in Russia. Serhiy Dedovskyi from Chernihiv oblast, Andriy Pashchenko and Serhiy Shevtsov from Kyiv oblast are civilians who were abducted by russian soldiers in 2022 and taken to russia. They did not return alive.

Kyiv City Military Administration reported that 46 underground stations in Kyiv metro operate as shelters around the clock. Over the past year, they have sheltered about 450,000 people during night air raids.

In Kyiv, DonorUA announced this year’s first campaign, “Your Blood Will Win”. It is a blood donation for the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The event will take place from 10am to 2pm on 11 January. To participate, you need to register.

Kyiv City Military Administration reported that in 4 months, Ukrainians have used Kyiv Mental Health Map through the Kyiv Digital app almost 40,000 times. The map is constantly updated with information – currently, it contains data on 420 municipal institutions and NGOs with working hours, contacts and addresses.

Zhytomyr oblast

The State Emergency Service of Zhytomyr oblast reported that on 8 January, bomb squads seized and defused three artillery shells. The explosives were found in a field near a road in Zhytomyr region by passers-by who called the Rescue Service.

The Regional Military Administration announced that Zhytomyr oblast has started an additional recruitment of specialists to support war veterans and demobilised soldiers in communities according to updated standards. These specialists should become the first officials in the community to meet veterans upon their return from the war and take care of the families of fallen soldiers.

The Regional Military Administration informed that despite the war, in 2024, Zhytomyr oblast farmers harvested 2.5m tonnes of grain and legumes. This exceeds last year’s figure by almost 100,000 tonnes.

Sumy oblast

Sumy RMA reported that in the sky over Sumy oblast, 11 enemy UAVs of the Shahed type were shot down by regional air defense units.  Since the beginning of the year, anti-aircraft guns have already eliminated 80 russian Shaheds, who brought death and destruction.

At night, russians carried out 5 shellings of Velyka Pysarivka community.  Dropping of VOG from UAVs (4 explosions) and mortar shelling (3 explosions) were recorded.

Konotop Regional State Administration reported that on 8 January, at approximately 10pm, russian army struck Sakhny village, Bochechkiv community.  As a result of the shelling, 4 households and a power line were damaged.  Families of damaged houses are provided with psychological assistance.

During the past day, on 8 January, russian military carried out 36 shelling of Sumy Oblast.  A total of 89 explosions were recorded.  9 border communities were shelled.

Seredyna-Buda community: mortar fire (4 explosions), VOG drop from UAV (4 explosions), FPV-drone strike (1 explosion).  As a result of shelling, 3 civilians were injured, a private household, a private house and a car were damaged.

Yunakivka community: an FPV-drone hit (1 explosion).  As a result of the hit, 2 civilians were injured, and a car was damaged.

Velyka Pysarivka community: the enemy fired by mortars (29 explosions), artillery (17 explosions), FPV-drones (2 explosions) and dropped VOG from UAVs (5 explosions).

Myropillia community: the russians hit by artillery (2 explosions), mortars (4 explosions) and anti-aircraft fire (1 explosion).

Esman community: an FPV-drone strike (1 explosion) and a VOG drop from an unmanned aerial vehicle (3 explosions) were recorded.

Bilopillia community: VOG was dropped from an unmanned aerial vehicle (1 explosion).

Znob-Novhorod community: an FPV-drone strike (2 explosions).

Krasnopillia community: the enemy dropped 3 mines on the territory of the community.  There was also a VOG drop from an unmanned aerial vehicle (2 explosions), an FPV-drone strike (1 explosion).

Shalyhyne community: the russians hit by mortars (6 explosions).

The Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that the White Angels crew evacuated a family with four children who lived in Krasnopillia region from Sumy oblast border.  In addition, it was possible to take out the family’s pet – the dog Elsa.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Austria to Ukraine Arad Benkö visited Sumy oblast.  According to him, the main purpose of the visit is to get acquainted with the capacities and possibilities of the city for further cooperation in the social, cultural or industrial spheres.  In the shelter of  Konotop Lyceum №2, Arad Benkyo spoke with students who spoke about their studies during the war.  Also, the Austrian ambassador visited the kindergarten, which is being restored after the russian attack by Shaheds and visited local museums.

Chernihiv oblast

During the past day, 8 January, russian army attacked three communities of Chernihiv oblast: Novhorod-Siverskyi, Semenivka, and Snovska. 

Novhorod-Siverskyi community: three drops of explosive devices from UAVs and three strikes by FPV-drones on Hremiach village.

The villages of Tymonovychi, Liskivshchyna, Medvedivka, Leonivka, Kostobobriv, Orlykivka, Karpovychi were under enemy fire in the Semenivska community.  The enemy inflicted 26 mortar strikes, 9 by barrel and rocket artillery, dropped 2 explosive devices from UAVs.

 The Department of Urban Planning and Architecture reported that 5,383 applications have been submitted by residents of Chernihiv oblast through the state program yeVidnovlennia since the start of this program.  These are applications for compensation for housing damaged and destroyed as a result of hostilities.  From this number, positive decisions of the commissions were made on almost 4,000 applications and compensation amounts were calculated, which in total amounted to almost UAH 350m.

Farmers from Chernihiv oblast can receive a voucher worth $1,000 for the purchase of grain crop seeds.  The initiative is aimed at supporting agricultural production in communities affected by hostilities.  The initiative is financed by the governments of Germany and France.  Applications can be submitted through the State Agrarian Register until 26 January, 2025. 

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of the RMA, reported that overnight, russian forces launched 3 attacks on Nikopol region. Strikes targeted the regional centre and Marhanets community, by artillery, a kamikaze drone and munitions dropped from a UAV.

The russian forces continue to attack Nikopol district, carrying out nearly 15 attacks throughout the day. The strikes involved kamikaze drones and artillery, targeting the regional centre and Myrove, Pokrov and Chervonohryhorivka communities. The attacks damaged 3 private houses, 3 utility structures and completely destroyed another.

Vinnytsia oblast

​​Mayor Serhii Morhunov informed that 10 additional Mavic 3T drones have been transferred from Vinnytsia to the 28th Separate Mechanised Brigade named after the Knights of the Winter Campaign. These troops are currently serving in Kharkiv oblast.

Kirovohrad oblast

Andrii Raikovych, Head of the RMA, stated that during an air raid alert in Kirovohrad oblast, air defence systems were active.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of the RMA, reported that 5 russian UAVs were destroyed in Cherkasy oblast. Debris damaged the windows of a dozen residential buildings, a store and a car.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to the SES, today, in Huliaipole, a rescue tanker track was damaged during a drone attack. The drone targeted the special vehicle while it was delivering water to the city’s residents.

The number of injured from the russian airstrikes on Zaporizhzhia on 8 January has risen to 122.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, reported that on 8 January, russian forces launched 333 attacks on 12 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast, including 9 airstrikes targeting Zaporizhzhia, Stepnohirsk, Temyrivka and Malynivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to the RMA, during the day, russian forces attacked Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv by a drone. There are injuries and damage in the residential sector.

Vitalii Kim, Head of the RMA, informed that overnight on 9 January, air defence forces shot down one Shahed-131/136 drone.

The RMA reported that on 8 January, russian forces launched 2 artillery strikes on Kutsurub community, damaging 2 houses and 3 utility structures in Dmytrivka village. 

A power line was also damaged, but repairs were completed by the morning of 9 January.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Air Force, on the morning of 9 January, reconnaissance UAV activity was observed in Odesa oblast.

Kherson oblast

According to the RMA, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on 2 residents of Beryslav. Both were hospitalised with blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to their legs.

The russian forces shelled Bilozirka, with one shell hitting a garage. A 24-year-old man sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wound to his leg and is receiving outpatient treatment.

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, stated that this morning, russian forces launched an airstrike on Kherson. They dropped 3 guided bombs, injuring 7 people. An 85-year-old woman was rescued from the rubble of a destroyed building. A 52-year-old man sustained a blast injury and facial bruises and was hospitalised, while a 62-year-old man received medical assistance on the scene. A 65-year-old woman suffered a concussion, blast, cranial and shoulder injuries. A total of 39 buildings were damaged, including a higher education institution, a kindergarten, a factory and a service station.

According to the RMA, in the morning, russian forces attacked Nezlamne village by a drone, killing a woman who was outside.

In the morning, russian forces launched a drone attack on Beryslav, injuring a 71-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man. Both suffered blast injuries and shrapnel wounds and were hospitalised.

Also, russian forces attacked a cyclist in Novoraisk, Kherson oblast, by a drone. The 64-year-old woman sustained a blast injury and shrapnel wounds to her shoulder, lower back, and leg.

Based on the information provided by the Prosecutor’s Office, on the evening of 8 January, russian forces attacked Beryslav by a UAV, killing a 27-year-old man who was outside.

According to activists from the Yellow Ribbon movement, in Henichesk, on the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast, russian occupiers are conducting mass searches, especially targeting youth and students who returned home for the holidays. This is linked to a russian flag found in a trash container.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The 68th Separate Brigade received a DJI Mavic 3T Enterprise, a DJI Mavic 3 Pro RC, 2 DJI Mavic 3 Pro quadcopters and an EcoFlow DELTA 2 charging station from Lutsk community.

Lutsk City Council reported that Residents of the 2nd and 3rd floors of the 3rd entrance of the building destroyed in August on Vidrodzhenny Avenue of the city of Lutsk, from 1 February will be able to return to their own homes for permanent residence.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA met with Andrii Kryuchkov, representative of the Supreme Council of Ukraine Commissioner for Human Rights in Zakarpattia oblast. They discussed the issue of observing rights of veterans in health care institutions of the oblast.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The RMA met with representatives of the Posmishka YUA CF. They discussed implementation in the oblast of a new project implemented by the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine. It provides for the arrangement of 5 new places of temporary residence for internally displaced people evacuated in the period from January 2024.

Lviv oblast

In 2024, 6,700 people were evacuated from front-line oblasts to Lviv oblast. IDPs are met by volunteers of Medical and Psychological Assistance, who, on the initiative of Lviv RMA, have been on duty 24 hours a day at the Main Railway Station of Lviv since the beginning of the full-scale war. For those in need, volunteers provide support, information and psychological support.

A new space for the work of three important centers appeared in Lviv: the Western Regional Center of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, the Office for Support of Families of Servicemen, and the Center for Searching for Persons Missing in Special Circumstances.

Rivne oblast

Thermomodernization works worth UAH 23.5m will begin in Korets kindergarten thanks to the Energy Efficiency of Public Buildings in Ukraine Project implemented by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine and financed by the European Investment Bank with the support of the EU.

Ternopil oblast

In Ternopil, on the facade of the Economic Lyceum № 9 named after Ivanna Blazhkevych, a memorial plaque to Oleksandr Osadko, machine gunner of the 25th Separate Airborne Brigade, will be installed. He was killed on 9 July, 2022 near Mazanivka, Donetsk oblast, during artillery shelling.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

On 8 January, a team of international experts consisting of representatives of Japan and the Republic of South Africa began their work at Khao NPP. Permanent missions of the IAEA at Ukrainian nuclear power plants, in particular at Khmelnytskyi, carry out monitoring in accordance with the seven fundamental principles of nuclear safety, which may be at risk due to the aggression of the russian federation.

Chernivtsi oblast

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on the initiative of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, organizes a country-oriented training course Supporting small-scale horticultural agriculture: increasing the inclusivity of women farmers. The course will be held in Tokyo (Japan) as part of the Encouraging Investments and Reforming the Business Environment project. Representatives of Chernivtsi regional educational and advisory center for agricultural personnel and Hlybotsk Vocational Lyceum will take part in the training.

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The US announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth EUR 500m, includes additional missiles for Ukrainian air defense, more shells and more air-to-surface missiles and other equipment to support Ukrainian F-16s.

The Ministry of Defense of Germany reported that the country will provide Ukraine with additional guided missiles for the Iris-T air defense systems as soon as possible. These missiles were originally intended for the Bundeswehr, but are now being diverted directly from production to Ukraine. It is about 48 missiles worth about EUR 70m.

Britain and its allies will hand over 30,000 drones to Ukraine. The drone coalition, led by Britain and Latvia, signed contracts worth GBP 45m. They were financed by Great Britain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Latvia and Sweden.
