War in Ukraine today: latest news, 09 April 2025 (photo)

It has been the 1141 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 6 pm:   

The invaders continue to assault the positions of Ukrainian defenders.
Since the beginning of the day, there have been 54 combat engagements.

Border communities in the Sumy region, including Kucheriivka, Shalyhyne, Porozok, Prokhody, Myropilske, Bachivsk, Chuikivka, and Fotovyzh, have suffered from cynical shelling from the territory of the Russian Federation. Petrushivka, Mariine, Turya, Mala Rybytsia, Velykyi Prykil, Krasnopillia, Samotoivka, Myropilske, and Uhroidy in the Sumy region were hit by guided aerial bombs.

In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy is conducting an offensive action near Vovchansk. The battle is ongoing.

In the Kupiansk direction, the enemy carried out one assault near Zahryzove.

In the Lyman direction, the occupying army attacked 10 times near the settlements of Serhiivka, Nove, Kolodiazi, and in the directions of Hrekivka and Novomykhailivka. Two combat engagements are still ongoing.

In the Siversk direction, Ukrainian defenders repelled four attempts by the occupiers to advance in the areas of Bilohorivka and Verkhniokamianske. Another attack is still ongoing.

In the Toretsk direction, the enemy attacked six times near Toretsk and Shcherbynivka. All combat engagements have currently ended.

In the Pokrovsk direction, since the beginning of the day, the occupiers have made 12 attempts to push our defenders from their positions near Kalynove, Shevchenko, Zelene Pole, Yelyzavetivka, Andriivka, and Bohdanivka. The Defense Forces are holding back the enemy pressure and have repelled nine attacks. Three combat engagements are still ongoing.

In the Novopavlivka direction, the enemy launched one attack in the area of Kostiantynopil.

In the Hulyaipole direction, the enemy carried out five attacks in the area of Novosilka and in the direction of Shevchenko. Two attacks are still ongoing. In addition, the enemy carried out an airstrike on Hulyaipole using unguided missiles.

In the Orikhiv direction, our defenders repelled four enemy assaults near Stepove and Shcherbaky. Two combat engagements are still ongoing.

In the Kramatorsk and Prydniprovske directions, the enemy did not conduct active offensive actions.

In the Kursk region, Ukrainian defenders repelled six Russian attacks. Three more combat engagements are still ongoing.
Since the beginning of the day, the enemy has launched 33 airstrikes, dropping a total of 58 guided aerial bombs on our positions and populated areas, and conducted 154 artillery shellings, including seven with multiple launch rocket systems.

In other areas of the front, the situation has not changed significantly.


The Ministry of Defense has allocated UAH 12.3 billion to support combat brigades in the first quarter of 2025. These funds are designated for the procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles, electronic warfare systems, transport vehicles, and other essential equipment to enhance the effectiveness of frontline units.

Six more children have been returned to Ukrainian-controlled territory from temporarily occupied areas. Among them is a 16-year-old boy whose father died after being tortured by Russian troops, according to Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

Frontline

Sabotage and reconnaissance groups are entering Vovchansk to identify weak points in the Ukrainian army’s defense, according to Oleksandr Danylenko, head of the media interaction group of the “Hart” brigade. There has been no advancement by the occupiers. The last time the Russians attempted to cross the Vovcha River was when it was still frozen.

Shelling

At around 09:20, Russian troops shelled the city with artillery, injuring a 64-year-old resident of Kupiansk, according to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office. As a result of the strikes, residential houses and utility buildings were damaged.

The previous evening, 19 enemy UAVs attacked Kharkiv in several waves from different directions. The massive assault lasted for 3 hours. Four people were injured in the attack, and medical professionals provided all necessary assistance. Most of the enemy strikes were recorded in the Osnovianskyi district. There were also impacts in the Kyivskyi and Industrialnyi districts of the city. More than five fires broke out at the impact sites. Several private houses were destroyed, over 20 vehicles were damaged, a car service station was destroyed, and industrial equipment in several buildings was damaged. The Department of Economy and International Relations of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration will assist affected entrepreneurs in preparing documents to receive recovery grants of up to 8 million UAH.

At 00:05, Russians attacked Kharkiv’s Osnovianskyi district with Shahed kamikaze drones. Two buildings caught fire over an area of 120 and 50 m², four vehicles were damaged, and two people were injured.

At 23:35, in Osnovianskyi district of Kharkiv, firewood ignited over an area of 20 m² due to a Shahed drone strike.

At 23:01, the enemy attacked Osnovianskyi district of Kharkiv with Shahed drones. Trash ignited over an area of 100 m². Three buildings, three trucks, and two passenger vehicles were damaged. Windows and doors were blown out, and equipment was destroyed in three industrial buildings. One person was injured.

At 23:01, another Shahed drone strike hit Osnovianskyi district. A building caught fire over an area of 80 m². A car service station was destroyed, three cars were destroyed, and another five were damaged.

At 23:01, a fire broke out in a recycling facility over an area of 600 m² in Osnovianskyi district of Kharkiv due to a Shahed drone attack.

At 22:10, in Industrialnyi district of Kharkiv, the enemy struck with a Shahed drone. Two warehouse buildings caught fire over an area of 210 m².

At 21:35, in Kyivskyi district of Kharkiv, a Shahed drone hit the ground. Five private houses were damaged.

At 21:07, in Kyivskyi district of Kharkiv, a Shahed drone struck an abandoned building, causing a fire over an area of 10 m². One person was injured.

At 01:53, in the village of Prosyanka, Kindrashivska community, Kupiansk district, shelling from MLRS caused a fire in an abandoned building over an area of 200 m².

At 01:38, in the village of Zolochiv, Bohodukhiv district, a private house was damaged after shelling.

At 21:30, near the village of Tsyrkuny, Kharkiv district, a Shahed drone fell in an open area.

At 19:40, Russian aviation carried out six airstrikes with guided aerial bombs (KABs) near the villages of Baranivka, Hresi, Odnorobivka, and Liutivka in Bohodukhiv district. A 72-year-old woman was injured. A house and utility buildings were destroyed, and seven private houses were partially damaged. Another KAB (without detonation) hit the village of Petrivka.

At 14:18, near Vovchansk in Chuhuiv district, a Russian FPV drone killed a 64-year-old man.

At 13:05, in the village of Bilyi Kolodiaz, Chuhuiv district, two people were injured by an FPV drone during humanitarian aid distribution.

At 11:22, in the village of Borova, Izium district, shelling (likely from MLRS) caused a fire in a utility structure. A residential house and another structure were destroyed, and two private houses were damaged.

At 11:05, another earlier MLRS strike hit the same village of Borova (Izium district), causing a fire in a utility structure over an area of 12 m².

Donetsk oblast

Frontline

The Russian army is attempting to establish a river crossing over the Chornyi Zherebets River in the Lyman sector, according to the “Khortytsia” Operational-Strategic Grouping of Troops (OSUV).

The Russian occupation forces have increased the number of attacks on nearly all frontlines in Donetsk region compared to the previous day, including in the Pokrovsk area. On April 8, Ukrainian Defense Forces repelled 58 assaults near Kalynove, Yelyzavetivka, Lysivka, Shevchenka, Zvirrove, Udachne, Uspenivka, Novooleksandrivka, Kotliarivka, Bohdanivka, and Andriivka — up from 52 attacks the day before, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The number of assaults also rose in the Siversk, Kramatorsk, and Novopavlivka directions.

Shelling

Russian troops struck the city of Kostiantynivka during the day, killing one person, reported Serhii Horbunov, head of the City Military Administration.

One person was also killed in the village of Bahatyr (Velyka Novosilka community) as a result of shelling. Two more people were injured in Siversk and Lyman.

The Russian army damaged a branch of Ukrposhta in Dobropillia. The occupiers targeted the city with two Shahed drones the previous day, one of which struck near the branch where part of the team from Pokrovsk works, reported Ukrposhta’s CEO Ihor Smilianskyi.

Over the past day, Russian forces launched 2,947 strikes on the frontline and residential areas.
According to the police, the enemy shelled 8 settlements: the cities of Kostiantynivka, Kramatorsk, Lyman, Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and the villages of Zoria, Ivanopillia, and Myrne.

A total of 42 civilian objects were damaged, including 40 residential buildings.

In Kramatorsk, Russians used five drones, injuring three civilians, including a girl born in 2013. Two apartment buildings were damaged.

In Pokrovsk, one person was injured as a result of shelling.

In Myrne, Komar community, Russia dropped a “UMPB D-30 SN” bomb, injuring a civilian and damaging three private houses and a car.

In Lyman, four private homes and a civilian vehicle were damaged by artillery shelling.
In Kostiantynivka, the occupiers attacked with drones, damaging an apartment building.

In Ivanopillia, the enemy dropped three “FAB-250” bombs, damaging 16 private houses.
Two bombs were dropped on Zoria, damaging four apartment buildings and ten private homes.

Luhansk oblast

The occupiers have concentrated their main efforts on the Lyman section of the front, attempting to storm positions near Hrekivka, where Ukraine’s Defense Forces are holding defensive lines, according to the Regional Military Administration. Increased enemy activity was also observed in the Siversk direction, particularly around Bilohorivka.

Over the past day, the enemy carried out 116 drone attacks, launched strikes using multiple rocket launchers, and opened fire 10 times with barrel artillery.

In temporarily occupied Sievierodonetsk, the level of payment for housing and utility services remains low, which has led to public dissatisfaction with the quality of municipal services. Specifically, the companies responsible for waste removal have accumulated over 5 million rubles in debt just this year.

There are also significant staffing issues in the emergency medical service of the so-called “LPR,” which are being addressed through staff reductions. As of early 2025, only 49% of ambulance teams were fully staffed. In many cities, only one or two ambulances remain in operation. To increase staff concentration, authorities decided to close dispatcher points in smaller settlements, including in the town of Bile, where the post office was also recently shut down.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

Representatives of Ukraine working on the return of Ukrainian children deported and forcibly displaced by russia met with Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Vever at the Child Protection Centre in Kyiv.

Vadym Tokar, the village head, announced that the Makarivska community is completing the construction of private housing for families who lost their homes as a result of the full-scale invasion in 2022. These are 10 new houses funded under the regional recovery programme.

Last week in Kyiv, the Ukrainian Women’s Guard conducted mine safety training for students in grades 1-9 at Obolon Lyceum and high school students at Kiterra Private Lyceum. During the training, the children learnt to recognise explosive devices, received information about dangerous areas and the rules of behaviour when finding suspicious items.

The city council reported that the Bucha community handed over a Granit unmanned aerial vehicle to a military unit of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine. UAH 3.7 million was allocated from the local budget for its purchase. The complex includes two bomber drones that can carry over 30 kilograms of explosives.

Today marks the third anniversary of the creation of the Dobrobat volunteer movement. In Kyiv and oblast, volunteers helped clear rubble, restore roofs and windows in residential buildings, and repair social infrastructure. According to the organisation, in total, Dobrobat has helped more than 10,000 families, restored roofs in 10,000 homes, repaired windows in 20,000 homes and rebuilt more than 100 social infrastructure facilities.

Zhytomyr oblast

The RMA reported that since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in Zhytomyr oblast, 3,468 private houses have been damaged and 186 private houses destroyed. So far, 2,713 private houses have been restored. The government has developed a mechanism to pay compensation to citizens for destroyed or damaged property.

The Zhytomyr oblast team won 20 medals at the Ukrainian Military All-Around Championships in Kyiv. The championship was held from 3 to 6 April in Kyiv and brought together about 500 participants from all over the country.

Sumy oblast

Sumy Regional Military Administration reported that russian forces struck Mykolaivka community by a ‘Geran-2’ drone. A private house, an outbuilding, a garage, and two cars were damaged.

During the night and morning, russian forces carried out 62 shellings of border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast. A total of 93 explosions were recorded. Mykolaivka, Khotin, Yunakivka, Myropillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, and Shalyhyne communities came under fire.

Throughout 8 April, russian forces carried out 108 shellings in Sumy oblast, with a total of 204 strikes recorded. The enemy used mortars (72 explosions), MLRS (11 explosions), artillery (41 explosions), cluster munitions (1 explosion), FPV-drones (20 explosions), launched guided aerial bombs (49 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (18 explosions). Eight communities came under enemy fire: Yunakivka, Myropillia, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Velyka Pysarivka, Shalyhyne, Khutir-Mykhailivskyi, and Seredyna-Buda.

The Regional Military Administration informed that in Krasnopillia community, as a result of russian shelling, 30 houses and non-residential premises were damaged, and a dormitory of an educational institution was completely destroyed. In Yunakivka community, a private house was damaged.

Yunakivka Community Administration reported that in Yunakivka community, except for Mohrytsia, gas supply has been suspended due to the inability to safely repair the high-pressure network.

According to Sumy Oblast Police, police bomb disposal experts neutralized the warhead of an enemy UAV, which was discovered near a private household in one of the settlements in Sumy region.

Iryna Yukhta, Head of Krasnopillia Community, said that since the end of March 2025, more than two thousand people have left Krasnopillia, while around 100 remain. In Krasnopillia, russian forces have destroyed a school, a bakery, a fire and rescue unit, a Ukrposhta office, a children’s and youth creativity center, other civilian infrastructure facilities, and residential homes. There is no gas supply or electricity in the town.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of the Regional Military Administration, announced that in Sumy oblast, another 87 participants of the national resistance training course have completed their studies. The training lasted for a month. With the help of qualified instructors with military experience, participants mastered skills in handling firearms, learned the basics of tactical medicine and mine safety, practiced UAV operation, and navigation in the field.

Chernihiv oblast

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of the Regional Military Administration, reported that on 9 April, russian forces attacked a village in Novhorod-Siverskyi region using drones. One drone targeted an agricultural enterprise, while another struck a children’s playground. No casualties were reported.

Chernihiv Border Detachment informed that on 8 April, russian forces attacked Semenivka and Snovsk communities in Chernihiv oblast. The enemy used mortars (9 explosions), FPV-drones (2 explosions), and dropped explosive devices from UAVs (8 explosions). Five villages came under enemy fire.

Serhii Poliakov, Head of charitable organization ‘Iskra Dobra’ in Semenivka, announced that since October 2024, residents of the border town of Semenivka and displaced persons have been receiving free meals from the charitable organization ‘Iskra Dobra.’ Volunteers prepare between 120 and 200 portions daily. He stated that a portion of the funding previously came from large international foundations, but after U.S. funding ceased, difficulties arose in organizing the meals. Now, sponsors are being sought for the ‘Charity Kitchen.’

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Late in the evening and at night, the enemy massively attacked the area with drones. The defenders of the sky destroyed 11 enemy UAVs. As a result of the attack, 15 people were injured in Dnipro. All were provided with the necessary medical care. Several fires broke out. Fifteen private houses, four multi-storey buildings, nearly two dozen cars, businesses, infrastructure, an administrative building and a gas pipeline were damaged. Apostolivka community in Kryvyi Rih region also had a loud noise. The enterprise was damaged. In the evening and in the morning, the occupiers attacked Nikopol region with drones. They targeted the region centre and the Marhanets community. A sports facility was damaged.

During the day, the occupiers shelled Nikopol region several times with artillery and drones. They targeted the region centre, Pokrovsk and Marhanets communities. There were no casualties.

Kirovohrad oblast

Restoration works are underway in the houses damaged by enemy rocket fragments on 6 April in village Lozuvate of Blagoveshchensk community. Windows have already been glazed in 22 houses, and slate damaged on the roofs of 28 houses has been replaced. 13 plastic windows for the branch of the Blagoveshchensk Lyceum were ordered. In the most affected house, the broken roof was dismantled, and some of the structures have already been restored. A water barrier was also installed and a technical expertise was ordered. The victims will receive financial assistance from Blagoveshchensk City Council.

Andrii Raikovych, Head of Kirovohrad Regional Administration, reported that 

the cleanup of the aftermath of a hostile UAV strike in Kropyvnytskyi on 19 March is ongoing. The city council has received 396 appeals from citizens about property damage. More than 350 addresses. Project organisations have already prepared almost one and a half hundred reports on damage to buildings and structures. A multi-storey building at 10 Mira Street with windows. In the next two days, windows will be installed in the buildings at 8, 12 Mira Street and 23 Nikitina Street. Applications and inspections of the damaged facilities continue.

Poltava oblast

Soldier Valerii Rakovych from Kremenchuk, died on 31 March 2025 from wounds received during a combat mission in the north-eastern direction. He was 42 years old.

Kremenchuk community allocated money to restore a lyceum in the Okhtyrka community in Sumy oblast. A total of one million hryvnias was allocated from the city budget. The institution was damaged on 8 March 2025 as a result of russian shelling. Two UAVs hit the building at midnight. The supporting structures of the walls, the roof and the third floor were destroyed and partially damaged. None of the employees of the institution were injured. There were no casualties. A few weeks ago, Kremenchuk community signed a memorandum of cooperation with Okhtyrka community. The latter is an outpost for Ukrainian settlements near the front line.

Cherkasy oblast

Kaniv community has paid the last tribute to Sergeant Taras Shevchenko. He was killed while performing a combat mission in the Donetsk region on 18 July 2022.

In Cherkasy, the funeral service was held for defender Oleksandr Tkachenko, who died on 1 April 2025 in Kharkiv oblast.

A soldier Volodymyr Rachko was buried in Cherkasy oblast. The soldier was killed on 2 April 2025 while performing a combat mission in the Dnipro oblast.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The Military Unit A 6175 received 2 DJI Mavic 3 PRO quadcopters, 5 VRK-8 UAVs with a thermal imaging camera, 15 Bezpeka PRO FPV drones and 2 EcoFlow Delta2 charging stations from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

The RMA reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, awarded with the III degree Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky to Lieutenant Colonel Andrii Maksymliuk, Commander of the 73rd Separate Battalion of the 101st Territorial Defense Brigade.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Ivano-Frankivsk community sent 50 FPV drones to the 95th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade of Polissia.

Lviv oblast

VTPP Style TM WoWin sent 9 sleeping bags to the 68th Brigade in Pokrovs region. In total, since the beginning of the war, the company has sent over a thousand sleeping bags for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In the village of Staryi Yar, housewives, together with communities of the villages of Kotiv and Verbliany, baked bread, pancakes, Easter cakes, and cookies and delivered them all to the front line. In Sudova Vyshna, volunteers have already produced and delivered the 13th camouflage net to the front.

Lviv City Council held a meeting  with a sledge hockey team (adaptive hockey designed for people with disabilities), formed from war veterans undergoing rehabilitation in the city. The servicemen have only been training for a few months, but are already actively preparing for participation in the World Championship, which will be held in 2026.

Rivne oblast

In Rivne oblast, 20 communities are already supporting oblasts affected by the war. The oblast received 2 partner communities within the framework of the Side by Side. United Communities project. Bilokrynytska community signed a memorandum of cooperation with Dobriansk, Chernihiv oblast. Sarny – with Savynska, Kharkiv oblast.

Ternopil oblast

The RMA reported as part of the Side by Side. United Communities national project, Zavodska community joined the restoration of the affected areas.

Ternopil community sent over a ground-based drone called Murakha to the Azov Brigade Forces to the frontline.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

A new veteran space has begun operating in the oblast – the Veteran Space VETERAN PRO regional municipal institution. It was created within the framework of the implementation of the state veteran policy initiated by the President of Ukraine and the Government. The institution will provide a wide range of services for veterans and families of fallen defenders and prisoners of war: legal support, psychological counseling, as well as assistance in solving everyday issues.

Chernivtsi oblast

Chernivtsi RMA held a meeting with representatives of the UN World Food Program. They discussed the current status of WFP programs in the oblast and plans for the end of this year.

Chernivtsi community sent 20 kamikaze drones and an electronic warfare (EW) device to the 8th Separate Mountain Assault Battalion. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

The EU transferred €1bn to Ukraine from frozen russian assets. This is the 3rd tranche secured by proceeds from frozen russian assets

Andrii Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, had a phone conversation with Desire Kashmir Eberande Kolongele, National Security Advisor to the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They discussed Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts to achieve a just and sustainable peace.
