War in Ukraine today: latest news, 08 June, 2024 (photo)

It has been the 836th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 8 pm:   

On 8 June, there occurred 67 combat clashes at the front, more than half of them towards Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. The Defense Forces of Ukraine are holding back the onslaught and repelling the enemy.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian soldiers repelled a total of seven attacks by the invaders. One battle near Synkivka continues. russian terrorists carried out airstrikes in the vicinity of Stepova, Novoselivka and Kupiansk settlements, dropping four guided aerial bombs each. Novoyehorivka was shelled with NARs.

Towards Pokrovsk, the enemy has already made 27 attempts to break through our defenses. 19 attacks were repelled. Fighting continues in the areas of Novooleksandrivka, Novopokrovske and Novoselivka Persha. The confirmed losses of the enemy here made 134 people irretrievable, another 175 russian occupiers were wounded. Four artillery systems and four vehicles were destroyed. A tank, a mortar and seven enemy vehicles were damaged.

Towards Kurakhove, in the vicinity of Krasnohorivka and Heorhiivka, Ukrainian soldiers repelled five enemy attacks. In total, russians made 10 attempts to advance. During them, the invaders lost 30 people killed and wounded. The information is being clarified. Also, an enemy cannon, two cars, a tank, an engineering vehicle and two armoured personnel carriers were destroyed.

Towards Vremivka, the enemy tried to improve the tactical position in the vicinity of Staromaiorske and Zavitne Bazhannia, yet did not succeed. There was an airstrike with four KABs in the vicinity of Yelizavetivka.

In other areas, there are no significant changes.

Prosecutor General Andrii Kostin informs that up to 90% of prisoners in russia are subjected to various kinds of torture. According to the testimonies of the released prisoners, up to 90% of them were subjected to physical and moral torture. 

Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, Head of Ukrenergo, reports that after a smooth repair, a unit of one of the Ukrainian nuclear power plants with a capacity of 1000 MW was put into operation. The scheduled repair of the power plant was completed 10 days earlier.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

On 8 June, the russian federation lost 136 people, 5 artillery systems, 7 cars and a unit of special equipment. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, 36 positions of russian personnel and one ammunition depot were hit. russian troops struck Vovchansk from the direction of Belgorod with three KABs, and dropped another bomb in the area of Staryi Saltiv.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman of the operational-strategic group of troops “Khortytsia”, informs that during the regrouping of troops near the state border in Kharkiv oblast, the russian federation involves units of the Chechen special unit Akhmat to deter the russians from desertion. 

Around 4:00pm, the russians hit Khotimla, Chuhuiv region, with a guided aerial bomb. As a result of two KABs hitting the village, a school building was destroyed, a shop and private residential buildings damaged. The press service of Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office reported that the victim was a man killed in the attack on Khotimla, and 35- and 43-year-old women were injured.

Viacheslav Zadorenko, Head of Derhachi City Military Administration, reports that the community has become much quieter, for the last 4-5 days KABs have not been used. At the same time, the enemy continues shelling border settlements with artillery. According to him, as of June 7, about 600 people remain in the border settlements:

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of the CMA, says that the neighboring Zolochiv also borders the russian federation and is also under fire. Although, according to Yurii Povkh, Spokesman of Kharkiv Operational Command, accumulation of russian forces and means that would indicate a massive offensive towards Zolochiv has not been recorded, the community is developing evacuation plans and convincing people to leave the border area.

At 1:50am, a private house was damaged as a result of enemy shelling of the village of Senkovo, Kupiansk region.

The day before, at 10:50pm, a car was damaged from a UAV as a result of enemy shelling of the village of Shevchenkove, Kupiansk region. 

At 10:00pm, 4 private houses were damaged in Kupiansk as a result of enemy shelling by the russian military. A man was injured.

At 2:08pm, a man was killed as a result of an ammunition explosion in a private household in the village of Ivano-Shyichene, Bohodukhiv region. 

At 1:20pm, 2 women were injured as a result of a UAV hitting a civilian car in the village of Kozacha Lopan, Derhachi community, Kharkiv region. They were hospitalized.

At 10:20am, a gas pipeline was damaged in the village of Ruski Tyshky, Tsyrkuny community. As of now, gas supply in the villages of Ruski Tyshky, Cherkaski Tyshky and Tsyrkuny has been restored.

Towards Kharkiv, there were two unsuccessful enemy attacks in the vicinity of Vovchansk. The defense forces continue to take measures to strengthen defensive positions and lines.

Towards Kupiansk, there were eight combat clashes. The defense forces successfully repelled seven enemy attacks in the vicinity of the settlements of Synkivka, Pishchane, Druzhelyubivka and Hrekivka. Fighting continues near Andriivka.

11,879 people have been evacuated from Chuhuiv, Kharkiv, and Bohodukhiv regions since May 10.

Donetsk oblast

The General Staff reported that there were 10 battles towards Pokrovsk. Towards Lyman, there is a battle near Terny.

Nazar Voloshyn, Spokesman for Khortytsia Joint Task Force, says that  220 attacks were repelled in a week towards Pokrovsk. The russian army does not stop trying to break through the defences of Ukrainian troops in the area between Staromykhailivka and Berdychi. 

At about 01:35am, the russian army hit Pokrovsk, Donetsk oblast, with an attack drone – debris fell on the building of one of the infrastructure facilities, where a fire broke out.

Over the past day, russian troops shelled 9 settlements in Donetsk oblast. As a result of the shelling, 57 civilian objects were destroyed. During the day, the police recorded 1833 russian attacks.

Operational situation in the region as of the morning of 8 June:

Pokrovsk region. In Kurakhove community, private houses, a shop and infrastructure facilities in Dalne were damaged, and Kurakhove industrial zone was shelled. An industrial building was damaged in Pokrovsk.

Kramatorsk region. In Lyman community, Terny and Yampolivka were shelled. In Kostiantynivka, 4 high-rise buildings and an administrative building were damaged. Also, 8 private houses, an administrative building and 3 infrastructure facilities in Markove were damaged in the community. 

Bakhmut region. In Toretsk community, a person was injured and 15 private houses damaged in Pivnichne; another 1 house was damaged in Shcherbynivka. In Chasiv Yar community, 9 private houses and 2 industrial buildings were damaged.

In total, during the day, the russians shelled the settlements of Donetsk oblast 12 times. 216 people, including 68 children, were evacuated from the front line.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reports that russians injured 2 residents in Pivnichne and Hrodivka.

Luhansk oblast

A man born in 1982 was evacuated from Makiivka to Kharkiv oblast. He will live there with his mother, who was evacuated two days earlier. In the future, Krasnorichensk military administration will provide the necessary assistance to the family. 

The enemy fired mortars at Makiivka and cannon artillery at Stelmakhivka and Kuzemivka. Nevske was hit by mortars, cannon and rocket artillery.

Also russians attacked near Hrekivka, Andriivka, Bilohorivka and Serebrianka forest.

Towards Kupiansk, the enemy losses amounted to 84. Two tanks and two armoured combat vehicles were destroyed.

Artem Lysohor, Head of Luhansk Regional Military Administration, reported that the investor from russia, to whom the leadership of the so-called “lpr” gave Skhidvuhillia mines for nothing, has already accumulated wage dept at the enterprises. Moreover, the funds to pay for it were requested in the budget.  

According to the Luhansk Regional Military Administration, the occupation administration of Rubizhne refuses to accept applications for further compensation for destroyed real estate.

Artem Lysohor added that the agreements were signed with children’s recreation centres Zakarpattia, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Lithuania for the rehabilitation of children from Sievierodonetsk CMA. In addition, the humanitarian hub of Sievierodonetsk CM A in Dnipro has a “recreation site”. 60 children have already joined the first shift.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The State Emergency Service reports that on 7 June, rescuers extinguished a large fire at an industrial facility that broke out at night as a result of an air attack by russian troops in Kyiv oblast. Almost 140 rescuers and 44 vehicles were engaged.

Ruslan Kravchenko, Head of Kyiv RMA, informed that both emergency and scheduled power outages were applied to stabilise the power supply in Kyiv oblast. The oblast area includes 145  Invincibility Points for phones and gadgets recharge set up by local communities, the State Emergency Service and responsible businesses.

According to Kyiv City Military Administration, a new procedure for hourly power outage schedules will be launched in Kyiv on 8 June in a test mode.The duration of power cuts for city residents is expected to decrease.

In Irpin, utility workers found a missile while working on a section of the heating network. It was removed by the Municipal Guard sappers. The missile  turned out to be an unexploded 120mm artillery shell for a Nona self-propelled artillery system with a fuze that had entered the ground to a depth of about 1,5 metres.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klychko announced that Kyiv defenders received housing grants: 10 warrants for apartments were given to 9 combatants and 1 warrant to the family of a fallen defender of Ukraine. By the end of this year, about 160 more apartments will be put into operation.

Oleksandr Lomako, Acting Mayor of Chernihiv, reported that Kyiv City Council had supported the decision to allocate UAH 25 million for the construction of defence structures near Chernihiv. The transfer of these funds was approved by the Ministry of Finance of Ukraine.

During the week, students of Irpin community raised more than UAH 371,000 to purchase the necessary equipment for the Ukrainian military. Almost all of the funds were transferred to the NGO Unbreakable Hearts, which delivers drones to the military, and the rest will be used to purchase a pickup truck for the 24th Separate Mechanised Brigade.

On 7-9 June, the Ukrainian House in Kyiv is hosting the War in the Lens documentary festival. It was organised by the public relations service of the Territorial Defence Forces Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (TRO Media). The awards were given to media professionals for the best journalistic works on the national resistance and defence of Ukraine during the full-scale war. 

Zhytomyr oblast

In Zhytomyr oblast, rehabilitation departments have been established in 4 cluster and 2 multidisciplinary supercluster healthcare facilities. To further develop the rehabilitation network, it is planned to establish an inpatient rehabilitation unit in Berdychiv City Hospital.

Ovruch community of Zhytomyr oblast handed over a low-tonnage truck to the border guards to help them with mobility and logistics issues while performing combat missions in the east of the country. The vehicle was donated the Estonian NGO Korporatsioon Sakala and Motohobi OÜ.

The Department of Education and Science of Zhytomyr RMA reported that last year the number of school buses in Zhytomyr oblast increased to more than 270 units. In 2023, 28 school buses were purchased on the terms of co-financing from the educational subvention and local budgets of territorial communities, and 16 school buses – at the expense of local budgets.

Sumy oblast

 On the night and morning of 8 June, russian forces carried out 12 attacks on border areas and settlements of Sumy oblast. There were 59 explosions caused by strikes from artillery, mortars, grenade launchers, and Shahed-type UAVs. Yunakivka, Krasnopillia, Seredyna-Buda, Shalyhine, and Velyka Pysarivka communities were shelled.

Over the past day, the russian military carried out 14 attacks on Sumy oblast – there were 54 strikes from various types of weapons. According to the regional military administration, Bilopillia, Krasnopillia, Znob-Novhorodske, Shalyhine, Esman, and Velyka Pysarivka communities were shelled. According to the regional police, a private residential building and a telecommunications tower were damaged as a result of russian attacks.

Volodymyr Artiukh, Head of Sumy Regional Military Administration, says that the level of mine danger on the border of Sumy oblast remains high. People who remained in the 5-kilometer zone are asked to follow the rules that will save lives.

On 7 June, the children of fallen soldiers, those who were captured or went missing, returned from their vacation in Zakarpattia. This year, 45 children from Sumy oblast received rehabilitation, and another 12 went to the second shift.

Chernihiv oblast

According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, russian troops shelled Semenivka and Snovsk border communities of Chernihiv oblast. There were 28 hits – the enemy fired mortars, barrel artillery and dropped VOG from UAVs.

Oleksandr Lomako, Acting Mayor of Chernihiv, reports that Kyiv has allocated UAH 25m to construct defensive structures near Chernihiv. After approval at the session of the city council and the regional Defense Council, the funds can be used to expand and strengthen individual positions.

25 Orders For Courage of the second and third degrees, the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky of the third degree and one medal Defender of the Fatherland were presented to the families of fallen soldiers on June 7 in Chernihiv Regional State Administration.

The ASC of Snovsk community has recently started operating in a new modular building in the Diia.Centre format. It is completely modernized, equipped with solar power plants, terminals, comfortable waiting areas, self-service corners, and children’s areas. The initiative was implemented with the support of the Swiss-Ukrainian EGAP Program from the East Europe Foundation. This is the second Diia.Center in the region – a barrier-free space where you can get several administrative services in one visit.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, reported that 2 enemy Shaheds were shot down by air defense forces over the oblast at night, in Sinelnykove and Dnipro regions. The occupiers continued to terrorize civilians of Nikopol region. A 70-year-old man was killed in Chervonohryhorivka community by enemy shelling. Two country houses and power lines were damaged. Russian troops also shelled the regional center and Marhanets community.

In the morning, the occupiers started shelling the area again. They launched 7 kamikaze drones and shelled Nikopol and Myrove community with artillery. 5 private houses, 2 outbuildings, a utility company, an administrative building, infrastructure facilities, and 2 buildings that are not in use were damaged. 

During the day, the occupiers carried out about a dozen attacks on Nikopol region. They fired with kamikaze drones and artillery at the regional center, Pokrovsk, Myrove and Chervonohryhorivka communities. A rescuer was injured in an enemy attack. He arrived to extinguish a fire that was also hit by the occupiers. But it was at this moment that the enemy attacked sneakily. The man is in serious condition. Six private houses, an infrastructure facility, a truck, a minibus and a garage were damaged.

Kirovohrad oblast

In Kirovohrad oblast, two American charitable organizations will restore 410 windows in Svitlovodsk community that were damaged by russian shelling.

Poltava oblast

Lieutenant General Mykola Oleshchuk, Commander of the Air Force of Ukraine, announced that air defense forces shot down a Shahed UAV in Poltava oblast during the night. Filip Pronin, Head of Poltava RMA, reported that more than 50 private houses were damaged as a result of yesterday’s shelling. A woman was rescued from the rubble of her house, but died today.

Cherkasy oblast

In Cherkasy, volunteers delivered a mobile dental emergency room to the military. It was converted from a medical vehicle that was taken out of the occupation by Ukrainian defenders.

A house was built in Cherkasy for a foster family of IDPs from Donetsk oblast. Five children’s rooms and a separate room for parents, a playground in the yard and a shelter were set up there. The house was built within the framework of Olena Zelenska’s Childhood Address charity project.

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

According to Zaporizhzhia RMA, the occupiers struck 8 settlements 290 times. The enemy launched an airstrike on Huliaipole and Novoandriivka. 109 drones of various modifications attacked Huliaipole, Levadne, Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka, Malynivka and Novoandriivka. 16 MLRS strikes hit Robotyne, Mala Tokmachka and Malynivka. 163 artillery strikes were inflicted on Huliaipole, Orikhiv, Mala Tokmachka, Novoandriivka, Robotyne, Levadne, Malynivka and Preobrazhenka.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of Zaporizhzhia RMA, reported that there were hits on civilian infrastructure. Private houses were damaged, and farm buildings were destroyed. No civilians were injured.

According to the General Staff, towards Orikhiv, the russian aggressor attacked Ukrainian units 4 times near the settlements of Kopani and Mala Tokmachka without success.

At night, the Ukrainian Air Forces destroyed 9 Shaheds and 1 Kh-59 across 4 oblasts, including Zaporizhzhia. During the day, the occupiers attempted to attack Ukrainian positions towards Zaporizhzhia 4 times, but according to the General Staff, they had no success.

 The State Border Guard Service reported that border guards destroyed 3 units of the enemy’s barrel artillery towards Zaporizhzhia using FPV drones.

Mykolaiv oblast

Vitalii Kim, Head of Mykolaiv RMA, reported that on 7 June, the enemy twice attacked Kutsurub community with FPV kamikaze drones. At 9:58pm, the water area of Ochakiv community came under enemy artillery attack. There were no casualties reported. 

Based on the information reported by the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Mykolaiv oblast and relayed by Inshie TV, in recent days, the Ukrainian FireFighters Foundation donated 3 pickup trucks to the State Emergency Service (SES). Among the new recipients of these future emergency rescue vehicles are the firefighters of Ochakiv. Soon, the all-wheel-drive off-road vehicle will be put into service and become a reliable assistant to the firefighters of the 22nd State Fire and Rescue Unit in the frontline Ochakiv region, which is shelled daily by the enemy.

Odesa oblast

A wheelchair basketball tournament for veterans, the Black Sea Cup, took place in Odesa. Competing teams included Odesa-Basket and two Kyiv teams, Kyiv Lions and Titanium. According to Vasyl Rybak, Vice President of the sports club for people with disabilities Odesa-Basket and Head of Rehabilitation and Reconstructive Surgery Center at City Clinical Hospital no. 10, participation in the Black Sea Cup itself is already a victory. 

Kherson oblast

The enemy army shelled several settlements in Kherson oblast, wounding 1 person. Kizomys, Tomyna Balka, Antonivka, Veletenske, Ivanivka, Chaikyne, Beryslav, Davydiv Brid, Burgunka, Novoberislav, Mykhailivka, Monastyrske, Dudchany, Vesele and Kherson were under attack. russian occupiers targeted residential areas, damaging an apartment building and 7 private buildings. They also hit a critical infrastructure facility, garage premises and a utility building.

Bilozirka was once again under enemy attack. As a result of the shelling, 2 residents who were outside at the time were injured.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of Kherson RMA, reported that around 11:40am, russian forces launched an artillery strike on Mylivka community in  Kherson oblast. A local woman was killed in the attack while she was in her home. Information regarding other casualties is being clarified.

On 7 June, russian occupation forces attacked energy infrastructure in Kherson oblast. The enemy struck a transformer substation in Bilozirka community, leaving 7 settlements in Bilozirka region without power.

As a result of the shelling of Sadove, near Hola Prystan in Kherson oblast, at least 22 people were killed and another 15 injured. This information was reported by occupation sources, who traditionally blamed the Ukrainian Armed Forces for the attack.

According to the South Air Command, on 7 June, Ukrainian military forces shot down a Supercam reconnaissance drone and an unidentified enemy drone in Kherson oblast.

Volyn oblast

Lutsk community sent 5 DJI Mavic 3 quadcopters to the Control and Artillery Reconnaissance Battery of the Military Unit A 0998 thanks to the budget funds.

Zakarpattia oblast

This week, the Owl’s Nest Humanitarian Aid Center provided IDPs registered in Uzhgorod with 35 packages with necessary things for children under 1 year old, 50 bags with grocery sets and 50 packages with hygiene kits. During the week, volunteers gave out clothes, shoes, bed linen and dishes (3,700 items) from the PDUM Partnerschaft Deutschland-Ukraine/Moldova e. V., Luftfahrt ohne Grenzen / Wings of Help e.V. and other benefactors.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

Bovshiv Gymnasium bears the name of its students, Dmytro Kotsiubailo, Da Vinci, who is forever inscribed in the history of the heroic struggle of the Ukrainian people for their future free from moscow. Dmytro became the 1st volunteer to be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

Lviv oblast

The RMA reported that within the framework of the eRestoration program, over UAH 14m was provided to the owners of damaged and destroyed housing in Lviv oblast.

A Safety Classroom was opened in Hlyniany community where children will be taught the rules of fire and mine safety, first aid and traffic rules. It is equipped with thematic games, informational posters and models of dangerous objects.

The day before, the Government passed an order transferring the complex of Drohobych College of Oil and Gas from the sphere of administration of the Ministry of Education to the ownership of communities of the oblast. The transfer of such a complex to the communities will allow housing for certain categories of IDPs who currently live in the respective communities. In particular, such premises will be able to carry out repairs at the expense of the local council in order to house IDPs in them in the future.

10,000 lily bulbs donated by the Netherlands were planted in various locations of Lviv. According to the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the LMR, the flowers will bloom in July and August.

Rivne oblast

A comic exhibition about the rescue of the collection of one of Odesa museums opened in Rivne oblast. War Diary. Marisel and Panna Cotta Save Cultural Heritage is a graphic novel in support of museums and cultural heritage sites. It tells the story of rescuing collections of Odesa Municipal Museum of Personal Collections named after Bleschunova after the start of a full-scale invasion.

Ternopil oblast

The title of the Honorary Citizen of the City of Ternopil was awarded posthumously to 13 more Heroes. This decision was made at the regular meeting of the 39th session of the City Council.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

The medical field of Khmelnytskyi oblast received 3 MG4 EV electric vehicles intended for primary health care centres thanks to the assistance of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Global Financing Fund between Ukraine and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and VID-KRAY MOTORZ LLC.

The RMA reported that the Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine received 13 generators for health care facilities in the oblast from the Rządowa Agencja Rezerw Strategicznych Polish donor company.

Chernivtsi oblast

Verenchanka community allocated UAH 300,000 to Chernivtsi Regional Hospital of War Veterans. This assistance will improve conditions of treatment and rehabilitation of those wounded or injured during combat missions.

The RMA reported that in the 1st quarter of 2024, Boianivka community allocated UAH 10,000 to provide one-time financial assistance to a military serviceman who is currently in a combat zone. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Ukraine and France signed an agreement on a fund of €200m. The funds are intended for those enterprises that will invest in the critical infrastructure of Ukraine for reconstruction. Also, €60m from this fund will be dedicated to the energy sector and its priorities.

Estonia will increase its contribution to the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine to €450,000.

The Dutch government announced that the Netherlands and Denmark will produce the CV90 BMP for Ukraine. Countries will contribute €400m to the Swedish fund for the creation of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles for Ukraine.

Switzerland will allocate $64m to Ukraine for digitalization of public services. Funds will be allocated over the next 4 years. They will be sent to war-torn regions to finance projects in health care, education and humanitarian demining.

The KNDS Franco-German concern announced the establishment of a subsidiary in Ukraine. He has already signed 2 declarations with the ENMEK Ukrainian company. One of them concerns the creation of the maintenance centre for Caesar self-propelled guns, and the second – 3D printing of spare parts, writes the French media BFM TV. A contract was also formalised on the transfer of licensed production of 155 mm projectiles to Ukraine.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Joseph Biden, US President. They discussed Ukraine’s defence capabilities, the situation on the battlefield, and preparations for signing a bilateral security agreement.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, met with Emmanuel Macron, President of France. They discussed preparation of the Peace Summit and participation of France in the implementation of the Peace Formula.
