It has been the 1047 th day of the Ukrainian resistance to the russian military aggression. 

What happened in Ukraine today:

Here is operational information of the General Staff as of 4 pm:   

The situation on the front line remains tense. Ukrainian defenders continue to actively oppose the russian aggressor, inflicting losses in manpower and equipment.

On 5 January, there were 114 combat clashes on the front line.

Border settlements of Sumy and Chernihiv oblasts, such as Porozok, Karpovychi, Hati, Bila Bereza, Druzhba, Bachivsk, Koreniok, Tymofiivka, Starikove, Petrushivka and Pokrovka, were affected by artillery fire. In addition, the enemy launched an airstrike with three GABs on Mala Rybitsia and unguided air missiles on Hremiachka.

Towards Kharkiv, russian occupiers launched an airstrike with unguided air missiles near Okhrymivka.

Towards Kupiansk, Ukrainian soldiers are repelling an enemy attack near Zahryzove, one attack was repelled.

Towards Lyman, the invading army, with the support of assault aviation, carried out six assault and offensive actions near Nadiia, Tverdokhlibove, Zarichne, Novoserhiivka and Pershotravneve, four clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Siversk, one unsuccessful enemy assault took place.

Towards Kramatorsk, Ukrainian defenders are repelling the enemy assault near Chasiv Yar, two attacks were repelled.

Towards Toretsk, units of the Defense Forces repelled three attacks near Toretsk, Shcherbynivka and Krymske, two clashes are still ongoing.

Towards Pokrovsk, the invaders have made 36 attempts to push Ukrainian defenders from the occupied positions in the vicinity of Yelizavetivka, Vozdvizhenka, Myroliubivka, Promin, Lysivka, Novyi Trud, Pishchane, Solone, Novovasylivka, Novoielizavetivka and Yasenove. Defense forces are holding back the onslaught and repelled 15 enemy attacks, 16 clashes are still ongoing. Enemy losses are being determined.

Towards Kurakhove, the invaders carried out 18 attacks near Slovianka, Petropavlivka, Kurakhove and Dachne, fighting continues.

Towards Vremivka, six times Ukrainian defenders repelled enemy attacks near the settlements of Yantarne, Novyi Komar and towards of Konstantynopil, two of which are still ongoing. Enemy aviation struck with GABs at Andriivka, Ulakly, Temyrivka and Konstantynopil.

In Kursk oblast, there were 42 combat clashes, 12 of which are still ongoing.

The russian army did not carry out active operations towards Kharkiv, Huliaipole, Orikhiv and Kherson, but is shelling the positions of Ukrainian troops and civilian infrastructure.

According to the Central Election Commission, in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, russia is preparing to hold illegal elections. The illegal elections are aimed at creating prerequisites for increasing the number of “deputies” from these territories in the State Duma of the russian federation.

Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, informs that in December, more than 54,000 enemy targets were hit. Almost half of this result – 49% – was provided by kamikaze drones.

Recent war events in the east of Ukraine

Kharkiv oblast

The General Staff informed that towards Kharkiv, russian occupiers launched an airstrike with unguided air missiles near Okhrimivka.

Towards Kupiansk Ukrainian soldiers are repelling an attack near Zahryzove, and as of 16:00 they repelled one attack.

At about 14:45, a Molniya UAV was spotted arriving at the intersection of Saltivskyi and Kyivskyi districts of Kharkiv. According to the RMA, the strike was carried out in an open area. The roof of a private house, a fence and a car were damaged.

The city mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that another Molniya UAV strike was recorded on the territory of an enterprise in Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv.

Viktor Kovalenko, Head of the community  reported that the village of Vidrozhdenivske of Zolochiv community came under attack from russian FPV drones. The attack caused significant damage to a private house and summer kitchen, and partial power outages.

At 01:52, the attack was carried out in Krasnokutsk village, Bohodukhiv region. As a result of the Shahed UAV hitting the road, 4 private houses and a fence were damaged. Three people were injured – acute stress reaction.

On January 4, the russian military continued to shell the border and front-line areas of Kharkiv oblast. The enemy used KAB, MLRS, FPV drones, and drones against the civilian population.

At 07:50, russians attacked the city of Kupiansk using artillery. Residential buildings were damaged.

At 08:47, russians attacked the city of Kupiansk using an FPV drone. There were no casualties or damage.

At 10:05, russians attacked the city of Kupiansk using an FPV drone. Power lines were damaged.
At 10:40, russians attacked the city of Kupiansk using a Molniya UAV. A car and road surface were damaged, no casualties.

At 11:50, russians attacked the city of Kupiansk using a Molniya UAV. No casualties or damage.

At 12:00, russians attacked the city of Kupiansk using an FPV drone. No casualties or damage.

At 10:50, russians attacked the village of Kivsharivka, Kupiansky region, using the Uragan MLRS. A private house was damaged, a civilian was killed. A 74-year-old man was killed as a result of mortar shelling.

At 14:10, russians attacked the village of Sheviakivka, Kupiansk region, using a KAB. Hit in open terrain, no casualties or damage.

At 01:45, russians attacked the village of Krasnokutsk, Bohodukhiv region, using a Geran UAV. 4 private houses were damaged, two women (59 and 77 years old) and a man (33 years old) were injured. They have an acute stress reaction, assistance was provided on the spot.

Two enemy attacks took place towards Kharkiv in the vicinity of Starytsia and Vovchansk, in addition, the enemy actively involved bomber aircraft.

Towards Kupiansk, there were four attacks. The defense forces repelled the enemy’s assault actions towards Zahryzove and Petropavlivka.

Andriy Besedin, Head of Kupiansk city administration, informs that there are 257 apartment buildings on the territory of Kupiansk community, and now there is not a single survivor. It is not that they are completely destroyed, but there is not a single one that would not fall under the “eRecovery” program. Currently, the front line passes two kilometers from the center of Kupiansk. The proximity of the front allows russians to strike at settlements not only with GABs, but also with MLRS and drones of various types, in particular, FPV drones and the Molniya UAV, “which hunts for cars.”

 Donetsk oblast

Serhii Horbunov, Head of the RMA, says that on the morning of January 5, russian troops shelled Kostiantynivka. As a result of the shelling, private houses, the facade of the St. Nicholas Church, a gas pipeline, and a power line were damaged.

Vadym Filashkin, Head of the RMA, says that 5 residents of Pokrovsk community were injured as a result of the russian shelling on January 5. In particular, in Pokrovsk, three people were injured, a shop and an administrative building were damaged. Two more were injured in Nadiivka – two houses were damaged there.

Yulia Stepaniuk, Head of the communications department of the 117th brigade, informs that the russian army is massing troops on the outskirts of Pokrovsk. This is about 50 soldiers, which is almost a platoon. The day before, the enemy had advanced to two detachments. It was possible to hit it with an AS-90 — a British installation that hit with its shell and eliminated eight enemy personnel.

Luhansk oblast

The RMA reported that russian attacks were repelled near Makiivka, Nadiia, Novoiehorivka and in Serebrianka Forest. The enemy continues to actively use artillery and unmanned systems. In particular, it struck 11 times with barrel artillery. It directed 102 UAVs towards the fortifications of the Ukrainian military.

russian occupiers promise a one-time payment to teachers who will move to a village or small town in the occupied Luhansk oblast to work for five years. They will pay 2 million rubles for this. Persons over 55 years of age are not allowed to participate in the program. In this way, the occupiers are trying to eliminate the shortage of personnel, because teachers do not go there.

In Siverskodonetsk, the occupiers are forcing residents to enter data on ownership of garages into the russian registry. Those who did not have documents for the specified property, or who lost them, are threatened with so-called “nationalization” or dismantling.

What is happening now in the north of Ukraine

Kyiv oblast

The RMA reported that last year, Kyiv oblast received more than UAH 1.15 billion from the state budget to purchase 497 apartments for the military. Thanks to the support of philanthropists, the first inclusive town with 59 modern houses for veterans was built in the region. The oblast has nine veterans’ hubs. Since the beginning of 2024, 753 combatants have applied to Kyiv Regional Employment Service, and 208 of them have found jobs. Thanks to the support of the state and local authorities, 98 veteran-owned businesses are already operating.

Mykhailo Sydorzhevsky, Head of the National Union of Writers of Ukraine, announced that the Writers’ House in Kyiv, damaged by the russian attack, is to be restored at the expense of charity. The unique historical, artistic and architectural monument, built in 1879, was heavily damaged by the russian attack on 1 January 2025: windows were smashed, offices and the facade of the building destroyed, and significant cracks in the walls found.

Kyiv Regional State Administration reported that a modern power plant that will allow saving electricity costs was installed at the Primary Healthcare Centre of the Boyarka City Council. It is a set of solar panels, inverters and batteries. 

The traditional campaign ‘Don’t be silent, captivity kills!’ took place in Kyiv. This time, people gathered on Akademik Glushkov Avenue near VDNKh. Traditionally, the participants of the action want to draw the attention of the authorities and society to the problem of the return of Ukrainian defenders from russian captivity.

The village military administration in Hostomel reported that an interactive stand dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers and chronicles of the occupation during the full-scale russian invasion in 2022 is planned to be set up in Lyceum No. 1. The village military administration asked citizens to bring photographs and documents of Ukrainian military and civilians, materials related to the events of the occupation, and things that preserve the memory of that period.

Zhytomyr oblast

The RMA reported that in Zhytomyr oblast, 1233 shelters of various types were set up in educational institutions. 117 shelters were created in 2024. This is 98% of the total number of institutions ( in general, there are 1258 educational institutions in oblast). Since 2022, the number of protective structures in all educational institutions has quadrupled. Today, 25 institutions that do not have their own shelters operate remotely.

The Communications Department of the Command of the Air Assault Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that Oleh Kovalchuk, serviceman of the Air Assault Troops from Korostyshiv, took part in the first offsite competition of the 15th anniversary season of MasterChef, which raised money for the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He was a participant and became a finalist of the MasterChef project of the 6th season. 

Sumy oblast

 In Svesa, efforts are ongoing to clear the rubble after a russian guided aerial bomb (GAB) struck a five-storey residential building on 4 January. As a result of the attack, 10 people were injured, including two children. The injured are receiving necessary medical assistance in regional healthcare facilities. One section of the building was completely destroyed by the attack. A total of 15 apartments were demolished, and approximately 700 windows were shattered.

The RMA reported that on 5 January, air defence units in Sumy oblast shot down nine enemy Shahed drones. Since the beginning of the year, air defence forces in the region have destroyed 44 russian drones.

During night and morning, russians carried out 9 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 35 explosions. The attacks targeted Khotin, Krasnopillia, Nova Slobidka, Seredyna-Buda, and Yampil communities. Yampil community was attacked by the enemy by three guided aerial bombs (GABs), damaging three private houses.

On 4 January, russians carried out 92 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements in Sumy oblast, resulting in 213 explosions. Twelve border communities came under enemy fire:

  • Khotin Community: Attacked by mortars (52 explosions), artillery (4 explosions), and FPV-drones (50 explosions).
  • Myropillia Community: Targeted by guided aerial bombs (GABs) (2 explosions), mortar fire (6 explosions), artillery shelling (7 explosions), and MLRS strikes (23 explosions).
  • Krasnopillia Community: Hit by VOG grenades dropped by UAVs (4 explosions), mortar fire (2 explosions), and MLRS shelling (10 explosions).
  • Nova Slobidka Community: Attacked by FPV-drones (1 explosion) and GABs (2 explosions).
  • Yunakivka Community: Struck by a GAB (1 explosion).
  • Bilopillia Community: Hit by 4 mines shells and subjected to grenade launcher fire (29 explosions).
  • Svesa Community: Struck by GABs (2 explosions), damaging four five-story residential buildings, one of which had an entrance destroyed. There were 10 casualties, including 2 children.
  • Putyvl Community: Came under FPV-drone attacks (2 explosions).
  • Hlukhiv Community: Struck by FPV-drones (1 explosion).
  • Esman Community: Attacked by FPV-drones (2 explosions).
  • Velyka Pysarivka Community: Hit by FPV-drones (6 explosions).
  • Shalyhyne Community: Suffered attacks by FPV-drones (2 explosions) and UAV-dropped VOG grenades (1 explosion).

Chernihiv oblast

On the evening of 4 January, russian forces dropped four guided aerial bombs (GABs) on the border town of Semenivka. As a result of the strike on a residential area in the central part of the town, nine people were injured, including two children aged 8 and 13.

Viacheslav Chaus, Head of Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, reported that the attack caused damage to administrative buildings, a hospital, two five-storey residential buildings, several private houses, infrastructure facilities, and civilian vehicles. 

On 4 January, russian forces attacked Semenivka and two villages in two border communities of Chernihiv oblast: Semenivka and Snovsk. According to Chernihiv Border Guard Detachment, a total of 13 strikes were recorded,.

Snovsk community: Huta Studenetska village – two mortar strikes;

Semenivka community: Yanzhulivka village – dropping of an explosive device from a UAV and six mortar strikes; Semenivka town – four strikes with guided aerial bombs.

RMA reported that from Semenivka, 24 patients of the local territorial centre were evacuated overnight. Elderly residents were relocated to an appropriate facility in Chernihiv.

According to Novyi Bilous Village Head Dmytro Fedorov, at 4am on 4 January, russian UAV crashed in Shevchenka village, Novyi Bilous community. As a result, one house burned down, and five others were damaged.

Recent events in the central regions of Ukraine

Dnipropetrovsk oblast

Mykola Lukashuk, Head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, says that in Nikopol region, a 43-year-old man died in enemy shelling in the regional center. A 40-year-old woman was also injured. In total, there were about two dozen attacks in the region. The occupiers targeted not only the district center, but also Marhanets and Pokrovske communities. They struck with artillery, suicide drones and dropped ammunition from drones. Several apartment buildings, enterprises, infrastructure, a supermarket, 3 private homes, 2 garages, the same number of cars, an outbuilding and power lines were damaged.

Zelenodolsk community of Kryvyi Rih region was also shelled. The enemy attacked with a drone.

Vinnytsia oblast

In a week, from December 30 to January 5, it became known about the death of 20 defenders from Vinnytsia oblast.

Kirovohrad oblast

In the center of Kropyvnytskyi, relatives and friends of servicemen held a Sunday rally in support of captured and missing soldiers.

Cherkasy oblast

Ihor Taburets, Head of Cherkasy RMA, says that in Cherkasy oblast, defenders shot down 5 russian UAVs at night. 

In Cherkasy, relatives of prisoners and missing defenders gathered at Soborna Square for the action “Don’t be silent – Captivity kills!”

Latest news from the front of the southern regions of Ukraine

Zaporizhzhia oblast

As reported by the regional police, on 4 January, russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia oblast by drones. An energy infrastructure facility was damaged. No casualties were reported.

According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, russian forces stormed Ukrainian Defence Forces positions in Zaporizhzhia oblast and attempted to advance near Novodanylivka village in Orikhiv region. However, Ukrainian defenders repelled the attacks.

Ivan Fedorov, Head of the RMA, stated that on 4 January russian forces launched 370 strikes on 10 settlements in Zaporizhzhia oblast. Among these, 222 drones of various types targeted Marivka, Kamianske, Huliaipole, Shcherbaky, Novoandriivka, Novodanylivka, Mala Tokmachka, Charivne and Novodarivka.

Mykolaiv oblast

According to Mykolaiv RMA, on 4 January and the morning of 5 January, russian forces shelled Kutsurub community. A truck, a private house and farm buildings were damaged. There were no casualties reported.

Odesa oblast

Referring to the Ukrainian Navy, as of the morning of 5 January, russia has deployed 1 ship carrying Kalibr cruise missiles to combat duty in the Black Sea. No russian ships are currently present in the Sea of Azov.

Kherson oblast

According to the RMA, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on a resident of Antonivka, a suburb of Kherson. The victim died in the hospital. Another resident was hospitalised with blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his legs and torso.

A 74-year-old man was injured in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson during russian shelling while he was outdoors. He sustained blast injuries and multiple shrapnel wounds and was hospitalised.

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, reported that in Dniprovskyi district, a 58-year-old man suffered a concussion and blast injuries after russian forces dropped explosives from a drone. He sought medical attention independently.

As reported by the RMA, russian forces also shelled Komyshany near Kherson, injuring a 60-year-old man who was hospitalised with blast injuries, a traumatic brain injury and a concussion.

Around 2:20pm, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone on a man in Dniprovskyi district of Kherson, causing blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to his back and legs. He was hospitalised.

The russian forces attacked a motorcyclist in Kherson by a drone, injuring him severely. He was hospitalised with blast injuries, a traumatic brain injury, concussion, eye damage and shrapnel wounds to his legs.

A 25-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman were injured in Kherson due to russian shelling.

Roman Mrochko, Head of the CMA, informed that a bus was damaged in Dniprovskyi district during a russian attack. There were no casualties reported.

In Korabelnyi district of Kherson, russian shelling injured a 56-year-old woman. She was hospitalised with a concussion, shrapnel wounds, blast injuries and a traumatic brain injury.

As the RMA reported, russian forces dropped explosives from a drone in Dniprovskyi district, injuring 2 men who sustained blast injuries and shrapnel wounds to their legs.

According to the SES, on 4 January, 2 fires broke out following russian shelling in Bilozirka, Kherson oblast. One fire was caused by a damaged gas pipeline, igniting a house roof. Another fire destroyed a garage at a separate location.

Oleksandr Prokudin, Head of the RMA, reported that on 4 January, russian forces shelled 34 settlements in Kherson oblast, injuring 9 people. The attacks damaged a gas pipeline, 2 private houses and a garage.

Latest news for today in the western regions of Ukraine

Volyn oblast

The 3rd Mechanized Battalion of the Military Unit A0693 received 2 EcoFlow Delta2 charging stations from Lutsk community.

Zakarpattia oblast

General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, awarded honorary badges to fighters of the 33rd Separate Mechanized Brigade. Artem, native of Uzhhorod, electrician driver of the Unmanned Systems Battalion, was awarded the Cross of the Brave honorary award. The soldier’s last name has not been disclosed for security reasons.

Ivano-Frankivsk oblast

The department of rehabilitation and restorative medicine of Nadvirniansk Clinic began to implement canister therapy (a method of rehabilitation with the help of specially trained dogs). The 1st meeting with the therapy dog ​​has already taken place. Oleksandra Marchuk came to the department with a golden retriever Betty, champion of Ukraine among dogs of this breed.

Lviv oblast

22 Ukrainian wounded servicemen came from Lviv to the monastery in Athos to rest and distract themselves from memories of the battlefield. Defenders made a pilgrimage to several dozen monasteries for five days in northern Greece as part of a psychological support program.

Rivne oblast

In 2024, the number of air alarms in Rivne oblast increased by a quarter compared to the year before. In total, air alarms sounded 267 times last year, while in 2023 – 215.

Ternopil oblast

Ternopil City Council reported that last year, 3,171 servicemen received a one-time financial aid for equipment from the community budget.

Khmelnytskyi oblast

At night, during an air alarm signal, the Air Defense Forces destroyed 2 enemy UAVs of the Shahed type. The places where the debris fell are being established. There are no injuries or dead.

Chernivtsi oblast

Davyd Kurysh, Junior Lieutenant of the 82nd Separate Amphibious Assault Brigade, was awarded with the Silver Cross medal by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. 

International support of Ukraine in the russian-Ukrainian war (russia’s invasion of Ukraine)

Eurostat reported that over 4.2m Ukrainians who left because of the war received the status of temporary protection in EU countries. Among them, 45% are women, 32% are children, and about 23% are men. The largest number of such persons were accepted by: Germany (1.14m, 27.2%); Poland (983,900, 23.4%) and the Czech Republic (379,400, 9%).
